Some game day traditions never lose their thrill

My two favorite bits of game day tradition both come before the game. One is after the team has finished its initial warm-up, gathers at midfield and walks deliberately toward the east end zone while the Redcoats play the “Krypton Fanfare” and the crowd gets on its feet and roars. That gets me every time.

And then there’s the solo trumpeter kicking off what they now call the “Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation” (still a slowed down “Glory to Old Georgia” to me) from the southwest corner of the upper level of the stands. If that doesn’t give you goosebumps, you’re definitely not of the Red and Black persuasion!

What’s your favorite game day tradition?

RUMBLE: Ric Flair said that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. We didn’t get it done, but at least we had the chance. Your chance ended well earlier, to you-know-who yet again. But thanks for your obsession.

I hope this “thread” doesn’t represent all of the optmism that was allegedly present at Folly Field. If so, ‘em dawgs were lonely!

I don’t know about that Bill Queen. After last years greatest choke in NCAA Sports History, breaking this stupid “odd-numbered year jinx” seems unlikey.

UGA’s greatest athletes?

Does gymnast Courtney Kupets belong on a list of UGA’s greatest all-around athletes? Who else belongs on that list besides Herschel Walker?

10 greatest wins of the Richt era

I find that compiling mental lists of things often makes the drive back from Athens go faster, so on Sunday I was pondering what I see as the greatest Bulldog wins of the past eight seasons, a time that has seen Georgia win two SEC championships, three SEC East division titles and compile an 82-22 record under Mark Richt.

Who put the foot in UGA football?

When legendary Bulldog kickers are mentioned, you frequently hear the names of Kevin Butler and Rex Robinson, but Billy Bennett doesn’t seem to come up as often. Maybe it’s because the musician/kicker was always something of a maverick. Maybe because there isn’t a famous Larry Munson call of one of his game-winning kicks.

Also: Confessions of a Dawgmaniac. So if you had to choose between being best man in a wedding or the LSU game in Athens, what would it be?

Preseason polls: Which way is up?

While, as an online headline noted, Georgia might be “looking up” at Tech for a change in a couple of the preseason rankings compiled by various college football publications, it’s certainly not unanimous. Lindy’s and Sporting News rank the Jackets higher while Athlon has UGA higher. And while we’re at it, let’s be sure to note that in the highly respected Phil Steele’s preseason Top 40, Georgia ranks No. 13 and Tech is … No. 28. Looking way up at the Dawgs, so to speak.
