UGA’s greatest athletes?

Does gymnast Courtney Kupets belong on a list of UGA’s greatest all-around athletes? Who else belongs on that list besides Herschel Walker?

10 greatest wins of the Richt era

I find that compiling mental lists of things often makes the drive back from Athens go faster, so on Sunday I was pondering what I see as the greatest Bulldog wins of the past eight seasons, a time that has seen Georgia win two SEC championships, three SEC East division titles and compile an 82-22 record under Mark Richt.

Who put the foot in UGA football?

When legendary Bulldog kickers are mentioned, you frequently hear the names of Kevin Butler and Rex Robinson, but Billy Bennett doesn’t seem to come up as often. Maybe it’s because the musician/kicker was always something of a maverick. Maybe because there isn’t a famous Larry Munson call of one of his game-winning kicks.

Also: Confessions of a Dawgmaniac. So if you had to choose between being best man in a wedding or the LSU game in Athens, what would it be?

Preseason polls: Which way is up?

While, as an online headline noted, Georgia might be “looking up” at Tech for a change in a couple of the preseason rankings compiled by various college football publications, it’s certainly not unanimous. Lindy’s and Sporting News rank the Jackets higher while Athlon has UGA higher. And while we’re at it, let’s be sure to note that in the highly respected Phil Steele’s preseason Top 40, Georgia ranks No. 13 and Tech is … No. 28. Looking way up at the Dawgs, so to speak.

Saturdays in Athens: A game day in the life

I’ve been thinking lately about how my game day routine in Athens has changed over the years and how it’s about to change again.

Richt: Winner to whiner?

Some UGA fans appear to think Mark Richt’s latest incarnation, following the Iceman/Nice Guy of the early days and “Evil” Richt of the end zone stomp, is Mr. Whiner. First there were his recent comments about the annual game in Jacksonville (he’s right that it’s not a neutral site, but complaining about the weather there favoring the Gators was a bit of a stretch), and now he’s griping about his Dogs’ nonconference schedule this coming season.

Questions surround UGA receivers, NCAA rules

Mark Richt has made it clear that he expects Joe Cox to be throwing the ball for the Dogs this season, but the outlook at receiver, with MoMass gone and Kris Durham hurt, is a lot murkier. The Dogs are thin in the receiving corps and last year’s breakout star, A.J. Green, is going to see a lot of double coverage. Who can take the pressure off him?

Meanwhile, at least one football-related secondary violation gets reported to the SEC every week. UGA’s most recent ones were pretty trifling inadvertent stuff, but with Lane Kiffin throwing around secondary violations like confetti and Auburn apparently crossing the line as its Big Cat recruiting tactics get more gonzo, the question arises: Should the NCAA crack down on these “isolated” violations that “provide only a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage”?

UGA’s Beckham makes the Bigs!

This will come as no surprise to those of us who followed his career at UGA, but it took fan favorite “Gordo” Beckham, star of last year’s College World Series finalist Diamond Dogs, less than a year to make it to Major League Baseball.

Will Cox be another Joe T. or D.J.?

Ever since Matthew Stafford announced he’d rather move to Detroit than play another season in the SEC (OK, not exactly how he put it), Dog fans have been discussing the prospect of his backup, Joe Cox, assuming the starting quarterback job. Generally, the views have broken into three camps: those who see Cox as another Joe Tereshinski III, a career backup who’ll just keep the seat warm until one of the true freshmen is ready to be thrown into the fray; those who see Cox as another D.J. Shockley, a loyal, patient backup who could have started elsewhere and now will get his time to shine; and those who figure Cox will fall somewhere in the middle as an adequate QB who might not win many games singlehandedly but probably won’t lose them, either.

Dogs shouldn’t give up a home game

Damon Evans should continue to stand firm on not giving up a home game in Athens in order to meet UNC (or anyone else) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta next season or any season, no matter what sort of enticements ESPN and the Atlanta Sports Council come up with.

Disappointed Perno unloads on Pups

Both Georgia’s baseball and softball teams were eliminated from their respective NCAA tourneys Sunday, but the contrast in the way they went down was striking. After the game, UGA coach David Perno was unusually brutal in assessing the play of his team.
