Dogs haven’t given up after all!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The other day a friend asked me if I thought the struggling Georgia basketball team would manage another win this season.
I had to admit it was looking doubtful.
Watching the basketball Dogs in recent weeks had become painful, with all the turnovers and the lousy shooting indicating the players had pretty much given up on the season.
Then came today. Not only did the Dogs win, but over the lofty lizards from Gainesville, with Terrance Woodbury scoring 32 points.
88-86!
That’s as sweet as it is unexpected.
No, I’m not thinking this is some major turnaround and that the basketball Dogs are going to make a late-season run at respectability.
But then I didn’t think they’d beat Florida, either.
No matter what happens the rest of the way, they have one sweet upset in conference play they can point to.
Never say never!

It just goes to show that if you play well as a team you can win. The Gators( and this includes football) really are beatable, but opposing teams buy into the media hype and then get blown out by them. I said this all football season and I’ll say it again for basketball season, if you go out and play this team hard they have weaknesses like everyone else. The Gators should be embarrassed to lose to a team like UGA. Perhaps Billy Donovan can get Timmy Tebow to come in there and give them an inspirational pep on what it means to be a Gator!

AWESOME! What a great victory over the lowly UF lizards! To get our first SEC win and do it against the gaytors is truly priceless. I live among the lizards and beating them in anything is fantastic!
Hang in there guys. There IS “light at the end of the tunnel!” GO DAWGS!

First of all I want to say congratulations to the DAWGS and Pete Hermann. I am BULLDAWG born and bred. When I die I will be BULLDAWG dead. Bill, I think your caption sums up the season for the DAWGS. I have watched them play several times through the Felton years and many times they seemed to lose heart, especially when things went south early in a game. Today they came out on fire. When the heat was turned up late in the game, they continued to fight and found a way to win. Turnovers and poor shooting has been the achilles heel all year and most of Felton’s era. I do not know what the final percentages were for today, but I suppose they shot somewhere around 60% or better from the floor and had maybe a dozen turnovers. They also played pretty tenacious defense for most of the game with a few let-downs here and there. But they came right back with a good offensive set and found a way to score.
I have said all of that to say this. There have been many comments on these blogs the past several weeks about a new coach. When Felton was hired, I thought he was the right man for the job. He came in with his no-nonsense style and cleaned house. He came in at a very low point in UGA roundball. Yet, I believe he had sufficient time to turn things around. For whatever reason, that never materialized. Now many think Bobby Knight is the answer. Personally, I do not. He would be a short-timer and gone on a whim. While my two-cents worth is not even that valuable, I am going to offer a few suggestions. I have been around basketball most of my 50+ years either as a player or as a coach, so I think I know a little about the game. If UGA is looking for a proven coach with a track-record, I say go after Lon Kruger. He helped to build Florida into what it is today. I think he would be a no-nonsense type coach who would re-build the program. Some want Tubby to come back. I say forget Tubby. He ditched us once for greener grass. Now let him stay in the North country. Kruger would be my first choice for a proven coach. Or, why not Pete Hermann? No one is talking about him to replace his boss. Yes, I know, many will say it will be more of the same. I tell you though, these kids seem to me to be playing with more unity and more fire in their belly. He does have a successful track-record as a head coach. I think what this team needs to be really successful is 3 key ingredients. First, we need a big man in the middle with skills that can dominate. We have a couple of guys that can rebound and dunk, but how many can post up, or spin past a defender gracefully and powerfully, or take it outside and drain a 3? Second, we need a couple of quick, long-armed guys out front that can drive, dish and protect the ball against the press and have the ability to score from most anywhere on the floor. Third, someone who could also fill it up from behind the arc at 40% to 50% would be a bonus. This would create mismatches for any defense. I would also like to see us get a little quicker in the back-court so we could press and create turnovers. I coached an up-tempo style of defense which often turned into easy baskets on the offensive end. These are the type teams we have the most trouble with.
If UGA wants a young up-and-comer, my vote goes to either Anthony Grant, Johnny Dawkins, or a top assistant off of either UNC, Duke, Oklahoma, or another top team in the country. Roy Williams and Coach K have been successful for many years. Do you suppose a part of it may be due to an excellent coaching staff? Give a young guy a chance and he will bring the excitement back to UGA basketball.
Bill, I have been following these blogs for several years and I have read a lot of garbage comments from so called fans. I have wanted to write many times, but this is my first. I know many out there will disagree with my comments. But think about it. We have been close in many games in the past during Felton’s tenure, but a crucial turnover, unadvised quick desparation shot, or a defensive breakdown has led to our demise. Today, when they were up big they continued to be aggressive. When the game got tight they tended to be a little too cautious offensively at times. I guess they were instructed to run clock and work for a good shot. That is good advice, but many times we settled for a bad, contested shot when we may have gotten a better look by remaining aggressive and driving it to the hole. When the game was on the line, however, they became aggressive again, put the ball in the basket, and then played tough, tight defense not allowing a cheap basket at the end. Even if they do not win another game, as long as they play hard and with heart, I will not complain.
GO DAWGS.

I can’t wait to hear the Gators excuses for losing. Whenever they lose, they ALWAYS HAVE AN EXCUSE. They have never been MAN ENOUGH to the fact that they were outplayed. I want to know if Calathes cried like Teblow did in ‘07. GO DAWGS!!!

It is always amusing to read statements such as “opposing teams buy into the media hype and then get blown out by them.” Florida has beaten Georgia more often than not these past 10-15 years because of better coaching and athletes that believe in their program. If uga’s athletes are so weak-minded that they believe everything that they read, then why not hire the ajc sportwriters as uga’s coaching staff. Like it or not, uga’s football and basketball coaches have not measured up. Congratulations on your win. Seems to me that your current basketball interim could teach your football staff a thing or two.

KingGator - typical Gator, gracious as always. The victory is being enjoyed, thoroughly. Thanks. Enjoy that bitter taste in your mouth. It’s called losing, something UF experienced in all major sports for almost 6 decades beginning in the early ’30s. Consider this a little reminder of the good old days…

Let’s be honest about the Dawgs basketball program. It stinks and has for pretty much 15 years. Yes they won a few SEC tournaments along the way but they’ve not been a real factor in the NCAA since Dominique Wilkins played there. A lot of the blame goes to the sorry coaches they’ve had but the biggest problem is the poor recruiting. There’s no reason why UGA can’t be like Fla. & Tenn. in basketball. I think Damon needs replacing as AD. My dog (he’s part bulldog) could be the AD for the football program and they’d still win. A good AD would get the basketball program turned around. And Dooley has been gone long enough for Damon to accomplish that. Louis Williams spurned the Dawgs for the NBA. Many other great players from Ga. went out of state to play. These Dawgs need to recruit their state like the football Dawgs do. It won’t ever change until that happens. If UGA basketball is on tv I change the channel…

robdawg08 you might want to bring up the fact that you have an ACC program in your state that steals all the talent…I mean im not bragging its just the truth. In fact tech steals the best from many states, such as Chrish Bosh(Texas), Thad Young(Tennessee) , Jarret Jack (maryland), Will Bynum(Illinois), and Anthony Morrow(North Carolina) and thats just from the last 10 years. Its very hard for UGA to recruit with us and we nab alot of instate tallent like Javaris Critterton, Gani Lawal, and Derrick Favors in the last three years….not to mention a bunch of support players. If tech had a coach we would be a major contender once again but Hewitt is safe…..

GT Student, Tech basketball has been horrible overall just like UGA’s the last 10 years. The last time Ga Tech was relevant was when Bobby Cremins was your coach. Ga. Tech isn’t getting the best players from Georgia either. Ga. Tech’s basketball program is as bad as UGA’s is. You can’t compete with Duke,NC,NC St.,and Clemson (and usually Maryland too).
