No, the sky isn’t falling
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So we know now that thanks to Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno leaving early for the NFL draft and Mohamed Massaquoi graduating, three of the Dawgs’ Fab Four will be gone next season.
Sounds dire, but I’m not so sure the Georgia offense is going to be as bad off as some folks in the Bulldog Nation fear. I think Joe Cox will be fine at QB. He’s not as talented as Matthew Stafford, granted, but he throws a nice ball and knows the offense. And he’ll still have A.J. Green, Michael Moore and Kris Durham as big targets, not to mention any other receivers that step up.
As I said last week, I’m more concerned with the falloff at tailback, though the tandem of Caleb King and Richard Samuel certainly has potential, and I’m betting Washaun Ealey doesn’t redshirt like Moreno did. The young offensive line, while not exactly top-caliber, should be markedly improved after this season’s baptism by fire. Plus Trinton Sturdivant should be back.
The defense? Well, the bowl game was encouraging. And hopefully Jeff Owens will be back. But that side of the line of scrimmage is still a wait-and-see proposition.
And, of course, we’ve got to hope the injury situation this season was a fluke and not some indication of a faulty conditioning program.
So the outlook for next season remains unclear. But that would have been the case even with Stafford and Moreno back. Now it’s just a bit murkier.
As for our former quarterback and tailback, I wish them well. Their time at Georgia didn’t entirely live up to its promise, but they gave us some great moments.

With 95% of our offense gone, we’ll have to depend on our defense next year. Thank god we still have Soft Willie. I was afraid he’d get offered a top job somewhere.
We are always a year or two away. Always missing a major piece or two. Now we’ll have a good line without the back to capitalize.
Same as it ever was. Maybe 2011 will be our year.

Knowshon Moreno had to make this decision. His family is not as well-off as the Staffords are. He has a chance to really help them. Also, as seen by Crybaby Chris Johnson, any running back can step in and perform right away. Look for Pittsburgh, which loves Bulldogs, to possibly make a move and draft Knowshon to be Big Ben’s right hand man.
On the other hand, Stafford couldn’t have made a worse decision if he tried.
As proven by Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and any other QB that has eventual success in the NFL, staying the four full years in college is ESSENTIAL to NFL success at QB.
In this, Big Ben is the exception that proves the rule. Think Ryan Leaf. Think Alex Smith. Think Kyle Boller. Think Jamarcus Russell.
Junior QB’s just don’t have success in the NFL.
Stafford’s family doesn’t need the boost of income an NFL career will provide, while Matt has proven that he has plenty left to learn.
Knowshon leaving is the right call. Running backs have so many carries in their bodies before they’re word down (look at Tomlinson).
Stafford, on the other hand, just made the single biggest mistake of his life.
He’s about to become a Detroit Lion, and a sure-fire NFL bust.
I hate to say it, but that’s his future.

I seriously doubt UGA ever redshirts another top RB after wasting a year of Moreno.
Now that the staff is reminded that good players will likely only be around for 3 years, we might as well get them some game experience. That is why Samuel was in there this year even though he could’ve used a redshirt year.

Good for them, take the money while it is in front of you. With a good line up front, it doesn’t matter whose behind you throwing or running. More to worry is the fact that candy a$$ Martinez is back with his no adjust defense. Oh yeah, tech sucks. and bama, way to embarass the SEC houndstooth pu$$ies.

It is really a no-brqiner..these talanted atheletes must get away from this coaching staff to perserve their marketability for the future. Another year with this failing group would spell disaster for the both of them. Maybe by next year the coaches will find out (albeit a season too late)what it takes to coach champions, just like they figured out at the end of the season this year why to defense was so bad!

Through no fault of their own. These guys risked life and limb for Georgia. We were damn lucky to have them in the first place. I think they are two of the greatest to ever wear a Georgia uniform, but it will all seem like a blip on the radar screen soon unfortunately. I wish them well.

We could probably lose to UF by 40 without either KM or MS. Probably be outscored 31-0 in the 1st half vs Bama without either one as well.
Doesn’t matter who we have on offense if the defense doesn’t get straightened out.

So don’t act like it is some great suprise or something. These two guys came to Georgia to, like every person enrolling in college should be, prepare themselves to make a living for the rest of their lives. They have done that! I’m a graduate of UGA, I’ve taught school and coached highschool sports for 31 years. These two guys as first rounders will make more on their first contract than I have in my whole career! Most of you can say the same. So be happy for them, remmeber they got what they wanted even if we as DAWG fans never got our BSC championship!

I have a feeling that the O-line will be damn good next year. That will make it easier for Cox and the running backs.
I expected these two guys to leave, so no surprises here. It might hurt us in recruiting, but we’ve gotten most of our class together already. If anything, it might help the Dawgs get an extra RB (oh, Greg Reid, perhaps) to sign on the dotted line.

Hey Matt ask Calvin Johnson how much of a craphole Detroit is to play in. Best bet is to pull a Eli and demand that a team doesnt draft you.

It doesn’t matter. The keys for next season remain the same. The defense must improve. The offensive line must improve. Special teams must improve. Someone must emerge to replace MoMass. The quarterbacks and running backs will be fine. They almost always are.
Maybe this will make the team work a little harder since they know they won’t have these two huge talents to lean on anymore. And god knows I will not miss the hype that would have came with the ‘09 season if these guys had returned. We could never be preseason top 5 again for all I care. I wish them well and will miss them, but there could be some positives to this. Just saying.

What great moments? A SEC championship-nope. You must be talking about a winning streak against Flordia-nope. You got to be talking about the Gator stomp-yep-but they couldn’t even back that up. So they really didn’t do anything but cause a big hype. And lose to those nerds from GT now someone else has to start that streak all over again.

mtdawggie: I’m not sure MS suffered any shame from the GT loss. He played pretty well (other than the pick). Beyond that, he never seemed to have much fun (other than the Bama OT win last year). Never a Tebowesque-type quote from MS. I really don’t think he liked his time at UGA very much. I also don’t think he improved much from last year to this year. For all his talent, he had some pretty rough spells.
I think MS was at UGA for only one reason and that was to get to the NFL asap.
When CMR made the comment that he didn’t want either back if they were half-hearted, I believe his hidden meaning was that both were in it only for themselves this year. very good players (KM a great player) just not great team guys.
That said, I don’t begrudge either for going for the bucks. That’s why you go to college-to position yourself for future success. KM absolutely made the right call. Stafford will need lots of work.

Good for the both of them! Moreno and Stafford’s talents have reached a glass ceiling at Georgia. What we saw this year is a good as they would get; especially with our lackluster offensive coordinator. The only thing they could look to gain would be an injury or two! Maybe now Georgia will get in their right mind and find a real offensive coordinator - you know someone who actually knows what he’s doing. And BugKiller - David Greene stayed at Georgia through is Senior season and what team is leading? Staying at Georgia… now that would have a been a complete bust for Stafford! Lastly - Moreno did not HAVE to make this decision in regards to his family’s finances. He made a wise decision because he didnt want to wind up like Earl Campbell of Texas.

Good on ‘em. Hope they do well. Thanks for the two years guys. We move on. In fact, in some ways this will help the team without this distraction hanging over its head. All the what ifs. I couldn’t have said it better myself! It DOES NOT Matter who we have on the offense if the defense doesn’t get straightened out.
This being said Stafford is in for a very short NFL career. The past proves that Jr QB’s have little to no success in the NFL. I wish him the best though. I agree that JC does not have the arm strength to get the ball downfield to AG. In conclusion there is going to be a HUGE dropoff in the backfield. I have NO FAITH in Caleb King. They might as well go pro and take the money. Folks work their entire lives and don’t earn as much as Stafford will be awarded in signing bonus before he ever takes an NFL snap. He’d be a fool to pass that up, same goes for Moreno.
Their legacy at UGA will be familiar- one of unfulfilled potential. Come Friday, UF will have won TWO national titles during their careers at UGA and LSU one. Factor the three embarrassing losses this year and an empty resume is the result.
Take the money and run… you’re playing for third place at best in the SEC next year anyway. UF will be even better next year, so will Alabama and it looks like LSU finally found a QB for the next 3 years. In fact, Paul Johnson has served UGA notice that they aren’t top dawg in their own back yard anymore either.
Stafford and Moreno had their shot and failed to deliver, it looks like the window of opportunity for UGA has closed.

All of you who are so supportive of the football student-athlete who comes to Athens need to go back to this years membership & Ticket Priority Information book and see page 2. Its costs over $31,000 to keep these kids in school per year- that’s the money that you pay to keep them in school for FREE. Both were never going to stay at GA since the day they took their first snap - all they wanted was the chance to make a name for themselves and then bolt when the time was right. Frankly I am glad this is over and we can start to put more emphasis on the team as a whole and not a few players who think their presence is the only thing that makes this team work. Nuff said…

All the best to Stafford and Moreno. It was fun watching them.

I agree with BugKiller’s assessment. Stafford’s career can be summed up with the words “Unrealized Potential” or “Unfinished Business”. NO National Championship, NO SEC Championship, not even an SEC East championship. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
We all watched him with hope and patience from his freshman year as he consistently made bad decisions to throw into coverage or fail to throw the ball away in favor of sacks. He never did fix those problems. His last bad passing decision cost us 6 points and the game against Tech (we only lost by 3 points, remember?)
He never did hit the long pass consistently and he still can’t. Up to his last game, he continued to under-throw receivers on long routes and throw behind them on short routes. The Michigan St QB outshined him by far, as did Colt McCoy his entire career. Strong arm notwithstanding, he never developed a consistent touch. Spare me the rhetoric about stats, they are relative. Championships are the test of the man and Stafford gets an “F”.
I expected more from someone who is purported to be such a competitor. I expected a true competitor to stay and “finish the drill” by bringing home a division title, conference title and possibly the Big Title, maybe even the Heisman. His legacy now will be as an underachiever and deservedly so.
I find it telling that even the commentators at the C1 Bowl agreed he needed an extra year in College to develop. If he isn’t the #1 QB taken in the draft, then he should know his lackluster season this year cost him millions - millions he could have regained with a successful 2009 season. Easy come, easy go I guess.
So long and thanks for the memories of what almost was.

i think joe cox will be just fine, especially when one understands that joe is far more accurate thrower then stafford.
most NFL qbs today put far more importance on getting the ball to the receiver where it can be caught, then having a gun ,for an arm that is not very dependable.
knowshon is by far the biggest loss and one that will be felt the most.
i can remember when herschel left in ‘82 and all felt an 7-4, or 6-5 would be the result in ‘83,but that team finish with one loss and a victory over texas in the cotton bowl.
this team has more talent than the ‘83 team and with a far better potential qb’s with cox and logan gray.
speaking of logan gray, he brings a dual threat with a very good arm and great running speed than can cause problems on the defense. we have not had this dual capability since DJ.
THE 09 SEASON COULD BE A HUGE SURPRISE!

Georgia will be better in 2009 than it was in 2008. Too many people only know about the guys that throw, run, and catch. The guys in the trenches are just as important, and both lines will be better next year. Cox will be solid. Dawgs just need Caleb to step up and they’ll be back in the NC race.

If Stafford’s mind wasn’t made up long ago, it should have been made in the fourth quarter of the Capitol One Bowl. He took a shot on our own goal line and got his legs folded under him. He came up holding his back. That could have been it. You would have to truly be an idiot to pass up first round money to play one more year of college football.

I think Georgia will be a better team next year. Stafford was not a leader. He never really improved at the QB position. Oh yeah he has a great arm like Jamarcus Russell did and look what a great pro he has been. In his defense he is a great kid and I wish him well. Knowshon became too much of a Knowshon lover IMHO. Did I hear correctly he was sent back to NJ last summer because his attitude was poor. As a former high school coach a less talented athlete with a great attitude is an asset any day over a talented athlete with a poor attitude. I do think he grew up as the season progressed and he would have done himself a favor if a humble Knowshon had returned and grown some more next year. That said Joe Cox deserves a shot and an injury free GA Bulldog team will be a force to be reckoned with. Hey we might even get them rings with ………….. no not the Tech score but the score from us winning the National Championship.

This is the best news of the day for all other team SEC fans. There will be new faces and talent next year, but UGA has lost its two shining stars. I just hope they come back and get their degree. The money is good now, but when they get older or possibly get hurt, the degree has more weight. It is all business and wish them the best from this Gamecock fan. BTW, Eric Norwood decided to stay - one may laugh, but 2009 may be USC’s year! I am sure GT and FL are jumping for joy, especially!

We lost to UF by 39 pts this year and just lost 95% of our offense while UF is preparing for their 2nd national title in 3 years. Don’t you think we are closing the gap?
As far as GT goes, sure we lsot by 3 poits but needed 45pts to keep it close. We should be fine losing the guy who threw for 5 TD passes.

I have to agree with Ike. The smart money says Stafford ends up in Kansas City unless the Vikings are able to trade up. There is an outside shot that the Bears will try to move up, but they don’t have the trade assets Minnesota does. And how can you possibly question the decision to turn pro. He’ll be guaranteed $20-30 million as the number 2 or 3 pick in the draft. Get real. He didn’t turn his back on UGA and he isn’t Rex Grossman or Joey Harrington. He’s go a Phillip Rivers arm and he’ll have Adrian Peterson or Larry Johnson to hand the ball to in 2010. He’ll be fine!

I for one am glad Stafford is leaving. I think Joe Cox is the better passer and after 5 yrs should be an expert at the offense. On the running back scene I think Richard Samual is the best back with a combination of speed and power. While the defense looked good in the bowl game, Michigan State is hardly Florida, LSU, Alabama or Auburn. Let’s not get sucked into a one game sugar high. Martinez still has to go. As we all saw, CMR got upset at some of the defensive lineups and coordination…AND REMEMBER… we played for the national champoionship the year after Herschel left and we went to the final 4 the year after Dominique left. With no clear superstar(s) the team tends to rally around each other more and play like a team. I think we will have a good season next year.

Offense is not our problem folks…our challenge lies in two areas
We played with no heart, no identity on defense this year. Think about how many big plays we made on D this season. Bet you can count them on one hand.
As much as it pains me to say it…we are turning into one of those schools like the Miami’s & FSU’s of the world where all we do is jump around and yap and dance. I have to agree with Optimistic Dawg: “It won’t matter.” Meaning, Georgia already has the recruits to stay in business.
At the same time, you have to realize that Tech will beat Georgia this year, just as they did last year. That’s because UGA is sort of, on a level, while Tech is on the rise. It should be a good game in Atlanta, with both coming at each other with blood in their eye.

There’s no doubt the loss of Stafford and Moreno is going to hurt, but there is some solid talent behind them. Logan Gray and Joe Cox are both solid QBs who will be battling for the starting job. Samuel and King are both solid RBs and I am thankful they both have a year of playing experience now!
That being said, if Tebow is back for Florida, then you can go ahead and book a repeat of 08 with 2nd place in SEC East.

You Techies are really setting yourselves up for some harsh payback next year. And we are not going to be nice about it. The payback will start from the high school stadium and continue to Marta as we all head home chanting “Nerds, Nerds, Nerds” as the train arrives. And to return the favor…we will go on to your blog and rub it in until April. Can’t wait. Your going to make the victory very, very sweet for us when it usually isn’t a big deal. So thanks. (but we will refrain from making rings)
But to real Georgia fans; you’ll actually see Green and Durham catch passes in stride for once. Something we rarely saw with Stafford. The loss of Moreno is much, much worse yet he made the right decision. Stafford made another bone-head decision just like he occasionally did on the field.
Look for Joe Cox to be a John Parker Wilson-like QB and simply a game manager. Last I checked, Wilson’s school won 12 games and was the runner up in the SEC. I’d take that in a heart beat, especially with in knucklehead coaches we have. JPW never won any games for Bama, BUT HE NEVER LOST ANY FOR THEM EITHER!!!!
Look for Georgia to start off slow next year and end up strong. This is why we recruit. And if the RB’s don’t produce, put Logan Gray on the field for some yards. And don’t forget about Dontavius Jackson at RB too. Ealey will redshirt pending no injuries to King and Samuel.

Folks - been a Dawg fan since 59 as a young kid and played a little in my time. Some thoughts. First, Stafford is a competitor and led the victory along with KM over Fla last year. An extra year’s seasoning would have helped him but he is going to be in the top five or six and I suspect the firts QB taken. Second, some of ints and overthrows are caused by breakdowns in route running by receivers or balls tipped out of their hands. No one player can be faulted or credited when a team does not meet expectations. He has never played behind a top flight line at UGA, was taking a beating and handing in there. He is a great pro prospect and we should all wish him the best. He was a team player and gave his all. Why should he pass up millions and risk a career ending injury. As to Moreno, I have rarely seen a player with more intensity. To say he is not a team player or gave his all is crazy. The kid is a great back and the only thing keeping him behind Walker and Hearst is his lack of straight-away speed (fast but not home run fast like those two). Commentors who note that a RB only has so many carries in his body are right. Further, its easier for a RB to make the adjustment to pro ball if they have run a pro type offense and can catch the ball. I wish him as well as Stafford the best. Lay off Bobo, with that beat up line, his offense still put up monster numbers. The problem this year were 1. injuries like I have never seen, 2. a very weak defense, and 3. abysmal special teams. College teams are new every year with players leaving and new ones coming in. Its quite possible that we could be 8-4 or 9-3. Its equally possible that we could get 10 wins or more. Hone of us know how a team will come together or the injuries it will suffer. Finally, for al the Tech folks, you had a great year but the LSU game was a step back. I would not worry too much, as I think you have a very good coach. To declare the DAWGS dead however, and the return to a Tech donminance is really stretching the bounds of fantasy. Lets see next year. Richt did not forget how to coach and I suspect that WM will have to produce on defense next year or he might be gently moved out the door. Good luck to MS and KM, you’re both great ball players.

Actually as talented and hard hitting as Samuel is I would move him to LB where he can develop into a head hunter with nasty speed…picture Curran but only faster… and open the job for co #1’s between King/D. Jackson. C. Thomas will be the scat back Tyson Browning type.
Cox knows the offense and has een in the fire…..BUT NOT THE SEC FIRE. Alot of you folks are gonna see the difference when the SEC schedule hits between Stafford who alot of people complained about…and Joe Cox….who that I can remember made 1 of his only starts at Ole Miss and got yanked. Not trying to put Cox down by any means…BUT PEOPLE LOOKING AT NEXT SEASON AND COMPARING IT TO 2005 WITH DJ SHOCK ARE GOING TO HAVE A RUDE AWAKENING….COX IS NO SHOCKLEY.
-Try and llok at the positives that come out of this.
-A. Gray will either become a full time QB….or WR/PR/KR player
-B. This gives the young stable of RB’s…EALY/JACKSON/THOMAS/KING/SAMUEL…who I ithnk should be moved to LB…a legit shot to fight and compete…..for 2 years all the RB’s have been competeing for 2nd string…..now the prize is open.
C. Depending on how Gray looks A. Murray is going to get tons of looks as a true fresh. I would redshirt Z. Met.
Good Luck to Staff and KM. Thanks fro the memories and good luck on Sundays.
GO DAWGS!

BugKiller had it right in the second post. Stafford made a mistake when you look at the history of success, or lack of success for early entry QBs.
Those looking at the initial contract money are short sighted. To get the really big money you need more than that first big contract. You need some success in the NFL and all the big money that comes with the second and subsequent contracts. Ask Joey Harrington, Ryan Leaf, etc. if they would rather have had success and be playing for an NFL team in a starting role with all of the endorsements and money that goes with it or take the one fat contract.
If Stafford is in it just for the big bucks, he will only get that one contract. I had hoped that he wanted much more.

Performance, or lack of it, at UGA has never been about talent. Georgia is in the top five in NFL players, but never meets that potential on the college playing field. There is a sense of entitlement and lack of discipline that starts with the coaching staff. Yesterday, Richt was patting himself on the back for a great coaching job. A season record of 75% is not great, considering how many give me games were on the schedule. He was lucky to win the games with UK and Auburn. Richt showed his true character with the disgraceful display of bad sportsmanship in the UF game last year. Georgia will continue to be a second-tier team, which is obviously good enough for Richt. Keep up the good work, Mark!

Actually, you should panic. Caleb King is a nice back, but I haven’t seen in him flashes of a top tier running back like I did when I saw from Moreno the minute he hit the field for the first time. Richard Samuel could also be good, but he has shown a lack of mental focus in his duties as kick returner.
Joe Cox couldn’t beat out Joe T. the third or Stafford as a true freshman. And he’s hardly comparable to DJ Shockley. Shockley was good enough to push David Greene and get snaps on the field. I don’t recall Cox rotating series with Stafford after he established himself in the second half of his freshman season. I predict a similar situation with Aaron Murray as happened with Stafford. He’ll get a chance to win the job, but will struggle enough to keep Joe Cox in the mix early on (playing the role of Joe T. III circa 2006), while Logan Gray will get some looks when both Cox and Murray struggle (in the role of Joe Cox circa 2006).
AJ Green is every bit as good as a freshman as Massoquai was as a senior. But he can’t throw the ball to himself, and he will certainly draw their opponents best coverage, which leaves Moore and Durham and no significant TE.
Good luck pups. Looks like a winning streak is about to begin.

Stafford will be rich and miserable. This opens up the game for the new kid from Florida who might beat out Cox. Stafford was a technician but never seemed to have the passion of a David Green. We have no problems at running back at all if the line stays healthy. Great lines always produce great running backs. But once again it all comes down to one thing -FLORIDA. Pray that TeBow jumps for the money. We can’t stand to see him another year in Jacksonville.

I’m glad to see Joe Cox get his chance. He has paid his dues and deserves it. It may turn out like Tereshinki did but I doubt it. He doesn’t have all the natural talents of Stafford but he is a leader. And there will be some studs behind him to push him. As for RB: There is an old saying that “average lines make good backs look average to good. Good lines make average backs look good to great.”

Did we even win our own division with either of these guys? What big game did Stafford win for us? Greene and Shockley are DAWGS! Stafford only looks out for himself. We will miss KM, but not as much as people think. Ealey, Samuel, and King are all GREAT backs. Cox is a senior QB with some game experience. We also have a nice change of pace with Gray, and who knows how good Murray will be. This just provides us with more question marks.
I am tired of watching Stafford not be able to put touch on the ball. I am tired of watching our O go absent for entire quarters of a game. A QB has to lead so that those things don’t happen. Stafford never did.
What championships did we win with these guys? NOTHING. They are both great talents, but neither can lead. Hopefully our team can come together in 2009.
By UGA fans are one big contradiction
January 7, 2009 4:56 PM | Link to this
The ongoing contradictions thrown out by UGA fans get better and better each year.
In one breath UGA fans claim Joe Cox will either be better than Stafford, who will be a top 3 NFL pick) or there will be no dropoff with Cox and then in another claim Florida will be awful if they lose Tebow (wont be this year)while at the same time claiming Tebow will never make it in the NFL. So much Irony, hypocrisy and contradictions from the UGA faithful.
It’s nothing new. This is the same bunch who blabs on and on about the series record with UF even though you have to be well over 50 years old to have seen a winning record vs. UF in their lifetime and then when it comes to the series record vs. UT or Bama they act as if the series record means nothing.
This is the same group who talks smack to UF about Jean Shorts even though you can go into any Wal Mart in Georgia and see enough jean Short wearing UGA fans to fill the Georgia Dome.
This is the same group who try and talk smack about UF’s academics even though UF has been ranked ahead of UGA Academically more some time now.
It just never gets old listening to how silly and dumb you UGA fans are. Keep up the good work.
PS. Good luck Matt and Knowshon, you are both class acts and will be great pros!

As great of a player as Stafford and Moreno were, they did not jell this unit as a team. there time at UGA was much like Peyton at UT….GREAT player- nothing to show for it. I am willing to take our chances with Joe Cox. At least he has some fire- something stafford sorely missed. Take a look at T Martin after Peyton left…..UGA when Greene left….maybe Cox when stafford left

All I know is Cox had one possession against Fl and one TD,I think his guy was covered pretty well when he threw the perfect accurate pass for a TD.Unlike Chandler running in the back of the end zone with nobody covering him and a bullet threw in the ground behind him.I will say that Matt has the arm for the Pro’s and I believe will do very well, but like Mel Kiper said his footwork and accuracy will have to be worked on for the NFL.To me he’s going to have to get alot better on the long ball. I think Cox will throw a more accurate and catchable ball and will also enable us to probably get Aaron some playing time he wouldn’t have got if Matt would have come back. The O-Line will be better but we want replace Moreno that kind of back only comes once in awhile.PS I think Matt throws a great intermediate pass that is required in the NFL more than the bomb, and if my comments sounded like I thought Matt’s done a bad job thats not the case at all considering the inexperienced offensive lines the last 2 years, as much as hearing so many people think Cox has no chance to get the job done!I believe he can.

I just had a fotune teller read Stafford’s future and here’s what she came up with:
April 2009 - Stafford is selected #1 by the Detroit Lions.
Game Day October 2009 - Detroit (0-8) vs. Chicago (5-3)
2nd Quarter - Detroit 3, Chicago 34
3rd down 9 to go from Chicago’s 23 - Stafford drops back, looks right, looks left, looks right again and finds Calvin Johnson wide open in the corner of the end zone. Stafford winds up and rifles a laser to Johnson, only to be intercepted by the corner back.
That’s what we’ll see next year from Stafford. Good luck buddy!

Don’t panic.
This is not the end of the world.
The one thing that is constant in college football is change. Every year your roster is going to change by around 20-25%.
I don’t care what any of you have to say Georgia has a Top 10 program year in and year out, and Top programs reload yearly. That is exactly what the DAWGS will do. We have a Top 10 class coming in.
The dynamic of this football team will change from this year just like this years team changed the dynamic of last year. That’s the way it is. Players will recover from their injuries. Every single player on the roster will mature at least one year both mentally and physically. They will get faster and stronger. Someone on the roster will come out of nowhere to surprise us. Some of these recruits will contribute just like A.J. Green, Richard Samuel, Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn, and DeAngelo Tyson. Next years team will look nothing like this years team just like this team looked nothing like last years.
We’ll be fine. Remember, Peyton Manning didn’t win a National Championship at Tennessee, but the very next year Tee Martin did!
Looking for the DAWGS to have another great year next year.

When he turns in a 4.6/4.7 in Indy, he’s going to line himself for a lot less money than he thought he’d get. My oh my, the spin has started early. You lose two potentially high to mid first round draft picks from the two premier spots in your offense and you are going to drop off “a bit?” Sorry folk, lose just Moreno would not been a big deal. Losing a QB is lot more disruption but can be overcome (see Shockley). Losing BOTH - LOTS of disruption and a big drop off.
As far as not living up to their promise? More like not living up to the hype. While this certainly does not guarantee a Tech repeat next year, my hopes just got a significant lift.
I look forward to y’all spinning Joe Cox who some hot shot freshman as the new Greatest Quarterback in the History of Football (TM), with Stafford surrounding that title! :)

Seriously, Dawg fans, ya’ll will be just fine. Maybe next year you’ll have some rough patches, but you have a ton of athletes and depth. If GT could win 7 games with Reggie Ball, ya’ll will win 7 or 8 with Joe Whoever at QB. Just not NC caliber anymore.

Gues what dogs…even if Tebow does leave, which odds are he won’t, the Gators still return the entire 2 deep on Defense that held the dogs to 3 points while the starters were in and that was WITH Stafford and Moreno. Yes Cox threw a TD pass vs. the UF 3rd string when the game was WELL in hand.
Even if Tebow were to leave UF returns what will be the best OL in the SEC with Rainey, Demps and Moody running behind them. And at QB John Brantley, former National Player of the year in HS who broke all of Tebow’s records, will be running the show and Brantley played 3 times as much this season as Cox did since Tebow was able to sit for the majority of the 4th quarters this season.
And oh yeah Urban Meyer is ten times the coach Richt is with a 3-1 record vs. Richt, possibly 2 National Titles and the same number of SEC titles as Richt in half the time.
Good luck to Joe Cox, Murray or whoever wins the job in trying their best to be Tee Martin. Ever hear the saying lighting doesn’t strike twice? Well thats what your basing your hopes on. Good luck with that. Maybe you should count on winning the Mega Millions too while youre at it.

I am thrilled at the announcements of Stafford and Moreno. But dont panic folks you still have a tremendous coach in Mark Richt. Mark Richt, at the rate hes going, will make it into the college football coaches hall of fame. All Richt has done since hes been at Georgia is average 10+ wins per year, including this year when you count the bowl win. Mark Richt has been absolutely compiling hall of fame credentials. Richt is the best and is in the same league with great coaches Joe Paterno, Steve Spurrier and Paul “Bear” Bryant. Richt is a keeper and I though I am disasspointed that Georgia is losing two top talents to the NFL, the Bulldogs are in capable hands as long as Mark Richt continues his coaching career at the fabulous University of Georgia.

Stafford made the wrong decision. He’s a good quarterback, but not great. He needed 4 years in college before making the leap. Moreno made the right decision.
I like the fan who said “the 2009 season might be a big surprise!” Wasn’t 2008 a big surprise for all you dawg fans? Not in a good way, mind you.

No disrespect Mr. Strickland, but the most profound thing you said in your writing was “their time at Georgia didn’t entirely live up to it’s promise”. And I don’t mean that as an insult to those two young men either. What I’m saying is that any fan that frets too much over this is obsessed with Stafford’s and Moreno’s promise, not the actual team results. Or maybe everybody thinks that with one more year they would have taken us to the promised land. Maybe, maybe not. It would be fairly ignorant to say that we wouldn’t be able to move the ball with them next year, but it’s crazy to think we won’t without them. Though they are both superbly gifted athletes, and they seem to be decent human beings, I have never sensed that either one of them projected “it” onto the rest of the team.
They made the right decision for themselves and for the UGA. They’ll be fine and so will we. I wish them the best; and I hope they send some of their money back to their alma mater.

Finally, some of you Dawg fans agree! Stafford is not that good. Too many folks here think it is a certain he will be in Detroit, but I just don’t see it. I don’t think he will even be the first QB drafted, much less the first pick. Good QB’s win games, great QB’s win championships. To me, Stafford never improved from his freshman year. No touch, throws on the run, never sets in the pocket. He has a cannon of an arm, but what good is it if you throw it 20 yards over the receivers head? When he arrived at Athens, he was apparently the #1 QB prospect in the nation. Really? I look at Colt McCoy (another Texas native), and I see a QB that has poise, leadership, and can win the big games when he has to. I never did see Stafford lead that team. Every great QB has a game they can hang their hat on as the one that vaulted him to the top. What was Stafford’s?
Stafford will probably be in the top 10 picks, but he needs help. He reminds me a lot of John Elway. Great arm, but it wasn’t until someone worked with him before he became a great QB. I look for Stafford to do the same.

zdawg, I was just thinking the same thing. I was at that Colorado game and I could not believe we were about to lose to COLORADO!! Joe Cox scored two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to save us. We were solid before Stafford and Moreno and we will continue to be once they are gone. We have a group of very talented QBs competing next year which isn’t necessarily a bad problem to have. Stafford and Moreno are DGDs but in reality, we didn’t win anything big with the two of them. They will be missed, but it’s time to move on. I’m excited about 09. Didn’t the same people predict doomsday after Greene and Pollack left? That didn’t turn out too bad after all. Behind the o-line we’ll have next year, we’ll be fine.

I can’t blame either for going out. Money talks. Moreno is ready and will do fine, can’t say the same for Stafford. Stafford simply is just not discipled enough, no mobility, good arm but you have to be able to hit receivers on a consistant basis, in a faster pace setting. Personally I am glad he is leaving, I have never been a huge Stafford fan. The media makes such a big deal over him. He has a strong arm, that is it. If it was not for Moreno being the run threat he was Stafford would have been in serious trouble this year.
But UGA has had a lot of great players in there history, who have come and gone and UGA still is a successful program. An we will be in the future.
The offense will rebuild, we have others who can step up quickly or they would not be on this team. But as state by others if WEAK WILLIE is still calling the defense, we may go 500 next year. The Offense is the least of my worries and it should be CMR as well. Under Willie, they simply just can’t stop anyone. In the SEC you have to hit teams in the month, help them up and tell them you will be right back (play after play).

Yeah sorry to see them go but the Dawgs will take the field again next year and it will be a another damn good season between the hedges. Cox will have a good receiving corp. The O-line should be better (if we stay healthy). The running backs look good. Martinez needs to wake up and read between the lines in Garners comment on wanting to work with a great defensive coordinator.
And to remind you of another Dawg team that lost their star player. Dominique Wilkins left Georgia and we went to the final 4 the next year without him.
Go Dawgs!!!! Cant wait for the G-Day game to get here.

Stafford chunking the ball to Calvin Johnson … there’s poetic justice in there somewhere. After Calvin suffered 3 years with Reggie Ball, and now a couple of years with inept Detroit QB’s, Stafford would look like the Second Coming!

Ah-hell, I don’t think anyone wants any part of that bandwagon. You wimps couldn’t even sniff the end zone against a team that UGA spanked. I think those fairy rings have already lost a lot of luster, RAMBLE ON!!! knucklehead. You win one game in eight (by a mere 3 points) against UGA and you have to give the team a freakin’ ring??? Georgia’s B-ball team never made it to the final four until the greatest player they’ve ever had decided to leave a year early. I think we’re going to see something similar with the 2009 football team, Stafford and Moreno will be missed, but maybe not as much as some think.

Hey guys, remember what happened when Peyton Manning left Rocky Top…. they won a National Championship. Joe Cox was recruited just as much as Matthew Stafford was. He actually has more fire and definitely a better leader than Matthew ever could be. The Dawgs will be fine. Stafford goes top 10 & YOshad between mid 1st-early 2nd round. Stafford has tons of talent+potential, but needs fine tuning.
Next year, depends on injuries, TB/QB backfills & defensive improvement. I’d say anywhere from 10-3 (again) to 8-5 (with injuries & a non-improved defense). We’ll probably land in the CapOne or Outback (at best) & Music City (at worse). However, Green, Durham, Moore at solid at WR & the OL will be improved, soooo if Joe C (or another QB) steps up, TB play is solid & the D improves a good bit…we could have a suprisingly good year (after this year’s letdown). Either way…GO DAWGS!!!

….when the dust settles, I think all Dawg fans will be glad to see both, yes both of them go. This is a team sport and neither Stafford or Moreno really showed me that they were in it for the team. Hopefully, CMR will light a fire under this so called defensive coordinator and allow the dawgs to return next year with a much more balanced team.
Yeah, it might look really slick to see Moreno leap over a defensive player or Stafford hucking the ball with the velocity of a .223 - but me, I’d rather have a team that burns brightly together, instead of these two supernovas.
Good move for Moreno. But I hope Stafford gets lit the F up in the pros… Maybe his receding hairline will be joining Zeiers in the UGA press box in 3 years. Nope, that ain’t gonna happen. I’ve seen plenty of UGA players leave early for the draft - but I never been more disappointed in regards to Stafford.
So now, let’s just hope we get to see Stafford at the Georgia Dome next year, getting wrecked by the Falcons D-line… and I’ll be chanting “Go Falcons” the whole time.
Stafford then = talented loser. Stafford now = talented loser with more money.

Okay, chill guys. We’ll miss Moreno much more than Stafford. Hopefully with the O line being better next year ( if we can keep them our of trouble and healthy) Samuel, King, etc will be fine. Joe Cox…go look at the 2005 recruiting/signing day material and remind yourselves how happy we were he chose to come to UGA. He’s a good quarterback with better touch than Stafford ever had. True, he might not have Stafford’s cannon of an arm, but tell me…how many ‘go’ routes did Stafford either over or under throw versus how many he hit in stride? I thought so. Believe me, I’ve seen the young man in practice many times, we’ll be fine with Joe.

Tim, I’ve had the same thoughts for the last year or two. Now a whole lot of people finally started seeing clearly. Stafford could throw a ball harder than anyone I’ve seen, but could never hit a receiver further than 20 yards out. He never could hit a receiver in stride especially. His long throws are statistically very inaccurate. I can’t believe the pro scouts don’t know that. He was an average QB but certainly not a great one. I’ve give you 10 Staffords for one QB from OK, Texas, USC, Texas Tech. Those are the elite QB’s in the country…..Stafford is well below their level of performance. I, too, think he is in for a rude awakening.
I’m glad Stafford is leaving. I wish CMR had put aside politics to have benched Stafford in a number of the games and given Cox ample playing time to show us what he can do. He doesn’t throw bullets like Stafford did, but that’s good. Stafford threw many balls so hard that they were extremly difficult to catch. I look forward to seeing Joe play!!
Whether Stafford and KM stayed or not, I still predict we’ll go 9-3 or 8-4 at best next year!! We’ll end up ranked about the same as this year….somewhere between 12-15th at the end of the year.
As far as RB’s, I didn’t see much from King or Samuel either one this year that made me sit up and take notice. Mostly runs back to the line of scrimmage. And not sure we’ll going to realize a hugh difference on defense.
But I’m sure CMR, Bobo, and WM know more than I do (I can only hope)!!

It is amazing to me how some on this blog ridicule these two guys. “They don’t care about UGA”, “All they care about is themselves” Really? Who the hell are they supposed to care about? So any player that doesn’t stay all four years isn’t dedicated to their school? The people who keep bringing up staying to get a college degree probably don’t even have one. If they did, they would be smart enough to realize that the return on the investment of a college degree from UGA is not even a fraction of what Stafford stands to make on his 1st signing bonus. Some say Stafford’s family doesn’t need the money. REALLY? Are you their family accountant? How in the world do you know about his family’s financial situation? To my knowledge I never heard that his parents were millionaires. That will change of course once he signs if first contract. GET A LIFE PEOPLE!

Please tell me what qualifies someone to be a team player? These two went out ever Saturday and played to the best of their abilities. They may not have been as successful as we would have liked, but they played hard. I never heard Stafford once complain about wishing the offense passed more. I also never heard Knowshon complain about not getting enough carries.

Some of these comments are unbelievable. Do you really think MS cares what all of you think? Even in Detroit, he’ll make millions. I would bet that most of you “experts” have never even worn a football uniform. God forbid if you had to run 50 yards. Most of you self serving fans only want what’s best for you. MS will laugh all the way to the bank. Face it, UGA will not win half it’s games. Even with MS and KM, UGA struggled against soft teams and got raped when they played BCS contenders. Might not like it, but that’s the way it is.

Many are forgetting the importance of education. NFL players become heroes and idols to many young children. Warrick Dunn could have left FSU early, but chose to stay and complete his education and he has still had success in the NFL. I, for one, would rather my children look up to someone like Warrick for sticking to his guns and education (his family was in DIRE need for money at the time) and showing people that success is not all about the size of your paycheck, but the strength of your will and size of your heart.

Hey RoaminDog, NFL salaries have changed a wee bit since Ryan Leaf and Joey Harrington came out. Top picks now get guaranteed $20-30 million. Most NFL veterans get nothing guaranteed. You think it’s a mistake to take that much guaranteed money instead of coming back to throw to slow footed dimwitted receivers and risk a career ending injury? David Greene’s senior season didn’t exactly result in a big NFL payday, now did it? Personally, I think Troy Aikman is a better judge of talent than you are, and he said publicly that both Stafford and Bradford are ready. Get over yourself, idiot.

Disappointed, I don’t think people are forgetting the importance of receiving a good education. At the same time, it’s not fair, and frankly ridiculous, for people on this blog to pretend like they care if MS or KM completed their college education. If it’s been there lifelong dream to play in the NFL then they should take advantage of this opportunity. What are they supposed to do…stay an extra year (risking injury) so they can be a role model for someone else’s’ child? Besides, there are a lot more honorable professions were a child can seek a role model besides professional sports. Firemen and police officers risk their lives daily for our society. Neither of these professions requires a college degree. The sad truth is, there are some people (many on this blog) that can’t separate their love for a sport and reality.

um… Mr. Sports Fan: regarding your comments on post by fans speaking on “being a team player” - have you not forgotten that Stafford was a captain of the team. If you are a captain, you should show some enthusiasm and bring your team mates together to solidify the win. In the games I watched in person and in Athens, Stafford’s efforts off the field were lacking. If I was Stafford and i saw the p** poor defensive efforts by the D, I would be in their face as much as possible - encouragin them to get mean, get tough, get it done. But hey, keg stands are fun too.
Do you remember Mr. Pollack? He was a team player with mad skills — was always looking to get his team mates pumped up at all costs, no matter what side of the ball they were on. Of all the interceptions I saw Stafford throw, he really never seemed bothered by it. Stoicism had nothing to do with it. He just didn’t seemed to care about anyting but how to elevate his value when the pros come calling. Team players live in the now of college football. You have 4 years - show us what you got. Not “show us what you can do, potential NFL star”.
He can’t pull his team together to win the big games. That is what a captain/team player is supposed to do. If he can’t do that, then I suggest he pick up a set of Pings and leave it to him and 18 pins.
He has skills, but is lacking in what it means to be a captain…. and don’t captain’s stay on the ship, even it appears to be sinking?
There is no clear defintion of “Team Players”, but we know who they are… and who they are not.

Sports Value Fan…I agree Stafford is not the high energy, in-your-face type of teammate like Pollack. However, what you are referring to is a personality trait. Saying Stafford is not a “team player” is a direct attack on his character, not personality. Barry Sanders is one of the greatest running backs of all-time. I don’t recall him ever being characterized as “vocal”. That being said, I do feel Stafford’s play on the field left much to be desired.

The way I see it, college is the best time of your life. Once you leave, you can never get that expeience back.
That said, I can understand Knowshon leaving given the risk of injury. Stafford, on the other hand, is not at all ready for the NFL. He could have had a lights out year with a healthy OL and a great group of receivers, which would have only increased is draft day value. I think he’s in for a very rude awakening, especially if he is drafted by a bad organization.

The David Greene teams didn’t have 1st-round talent at QB or at running back. But they had strength in the trenches (on both sides of the ball). Dawgs will most likely start ZERO freshmen on the O-line in 2009 for the first time in 3 years. There is a very good chance that the D-line will be healthy and strong next year. An emerging star at defensive end is all the Dawgs will need to be an elite team.

Stafford and Moreno…thanks for the memories. You thrilled our hearts and enriched our lives. You were a joy to watch. You didn’t win as many as you should have. It wasn’t your fault … you fought long and hard.
I believe last year’s dismal season lies in one certain place … at the feet of Willie Martinez. As a football fan for over forty years, I’ve never seen such bad coaching and inability to adjust. The third down defensive calls against tech will be in my craw forever.
Willie needs to go. I’m not the least bit excited about next year knowing that no matter what the Dawgs do … Willie will surrender to the other team and let them score more points than we can ever score.
For the first time in many years … I’m NOT looking forward to this year. I CERTAINLY KNOW that it won’t be a championship year and that we will lose to Florida and a couple of others because of our defense.
I would prefer anyone other than Willie. I’m just sick of even hearing he’s still around and will still be taking the life, fire and fierceness out of what the bulldogs are all about.
I’ve said it a hundred times and I’ll say it again … Willie Martinez will kill the Dawgs next year and CMR will allow him to do it.

Back when H Walker played at Georgia when he went down C Norris would get 230 yards running the ball a game . Thanks alot Stafford and Moreno one more year would not have killed you. What a shame that you had to go out on a losing note to Florida and not to mention Georgia Tech. That right their would have made me want to come back. Now you both still want ever know what a Championship is all about because going to a loseing team like “Detroit” will not win you a Super Bowl. What an embarrassment to all the Georgia fans that you would leave them not to mention Coach Rich this way. Hope the money is worth it. Both of you should have finished your education then go to the NFL. I hope it doesn’t happen to either of you but accidents do happen and you both could be out of a career before it even get started if you should get hurt in your first game. Better put some of that money away for a raining day because you might need it. I think that Florida quarterback “Tim Tebow” will be picked a head of Stafford if he goes Pro followed by Oklahoma Sam Bradford and then Stafford will probably be picked 4th or 5th. Should have waited one more year then he would have surely been picked as Number 1 because he would have lead GEORGIA to a National Championship and going out on that high of a note would have been a good reference around the league. Best of luck guys because money is not everything and I hope that you both never play on a Super Bowl Team just always a team like Detriot. Thanks for the memories of never given Georgia a Nation Championship Team and when we go next year or the next and win one guess what you want be part of it and never have what could have been. I like the person who said “Take note recruits, come to Georgia and get picked in the 1st round…” What better recruiting tool than that? 99.9% of high schoolers come go to college with dreams of playing in the NFL. If we don’t toot our horn about the number of players who leave Georgia and actually go on to the NFL, then we are shooting ourselves in the foot. I only wish they had announced earlier. Can you imagine the blue chippers who would line up to come in and step into those “showcase” positions? And yes, Joe Cox was a blue chipper himself….lest we forget. Let’s see what’s next. First off, like most Dawg fans, I wish both Stafford and Moreno well. Their decision will serve both of them well financially.
I think their decision is the best thing for this team as well. Look at Coach Richt’s comments prior to their making their decision official and public; ” I only want them to come back if it is in their hearts to do it, if they want to come back and give their full heart to help UGA win a championship. I am paraphrasing what he said but that was the jist of it.
Why would he put it that way??? Stafford was asked by one of the local sports radio stations this question immediately after making his decision; ‘Do you feel you guys are leaving unfinished business here at UGA, never having one a championship?
His answer, ‘No, we’ve won alot of big games and played in alot of big games.’
That comment made me feel better about his leaving. Stafford and Moreno were more concerned with perfecting their draft stock if you ask me. Guys like Pollack and Greene came back because they wanted to win a championship.
We will be a better team without these two. Maybe not as potent on offense, but a more cohesive and better team with Joe Cox leading the way… Mark my words.

We still have a whole lot of talent here and some great recruits coming in — so quit all the crying… Mo and Staff gave us all some great memories while they were here and like Larry says “and with a new breed of BULLDAWG we will continue…”. Have some faith in the team we still have and look forward to 2009 — they just might surprise you. Even though they are gone just remember * ONCE A DAWG ALWAYS A DAWG. I got one question for all you bumble-bee fans that are commenting on our blog— *Where is Reggie,CJ or Chan? I haven’t heard anything about them lately. 1-8 not a bad record.. **GOOOOOO DAWGS

Look I feel much more comfortable with Joe Cox at QB than Stafford. Sure Stafford was talented and well suited for any NFL team but he did not have that “IT” factor like other Qb’s I have watched such as Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, and Colt Mccoy! Joe Cox has more heart and he is surely a winner! If he ends his college career as he did his HS career he will finish undefeated with a championship! He has stuck it out the last 4 years and been positive the whole time! He has earned this and will make a huge impact. I am worried about the RB position. There as no signs of greatness this year from the back ups and Moreno will be missed. Go Dawgs!

HEY “By MoDawg (aka 256-160) I got your IDIOT attitude between my legs if you want it.
Joe Cox will be a much better QB then Stafford will ever be because he cares more about the Team and the Fans and Coach Rich, and not about breaking records and he wants to win games not lose them also he ia a Team Player and will put the team first. Stafford never had any real enthusiasm and Cox will be in the defensive guys face if they can’t get the job done which was lacking of Stafford. All he wanted to do was set school records not win Championships. So take that “By MoDawg and stick it up you A*$. GO DAWG IN 2009; 2010 AND 2011.

What I enjoy most is seeing all you so-called dawg fans crap your bed over MS & KM leaving. I mean really, just read the posts of YOUR OWN FELLOW FANS and how so many are throwing MS & KM under the bus for leaving, and all the talk of “the unfinished drill, the unrealized potential, and the unfilfilled potential.” Watching all you mutts savage EACH OTHER and MS & KM is simply pathetic, and laughable.

Stafford has to go now. He put in his due diligence in making this decision. Lots of football experts believe he has the goods and he is projected to be a high first round draft pick. Regardless of his performance in another year at UGA, his stock is likely to drop next year. I’m a little concerned about Knowshon Moreno. He didn’t get his paperwork in in time to get an official draft projection; he relied on his and his family’s input only in making the decision to declare. Not exactly a display of diligence, intelligence, and discipline. I’m not sure he’s got the goods to be an impact player in the NFL. While he’s very energetic and demonstrative about it, folks like Ray Lewis (among many, many others) tend to temper that a bit in the NFL — plus, most pro teams already have well-paid cheerleaders. It’s very possible that Moreno won’t make the first round cut, and could go deep in the second round of the draft. In any event, I’m happy for MS and KM and will keep my fingers crossed for both of them in April.

On the otherhand, 2008 was a forgetable year, except for the bowl game.HOWERVER,the DAWGS did win 10 games and how can you be rated #1 with an untested line made up of freshmen and sophmores. would have been great to get ga in pasadena last year. troy would have destroyed just one more over-hyped, totally over-ranked sec team. go west where real footbal is played, or go home sec.

Many of the people on this post have mentioned that they don’t think MS had a very good time while UGA - never showing the kind of emotion that Tebow shows. From what several students at UGA (my sister included) have told me over the past couple of years about MS in the class room and on campus may be an indicator of that; that MS was not very well liked on campus - oh yea, they liked him at game time, but otherwise he was very cocky, aloof, and had the attitude that “I’m too good to be hanging around you” persona. Well, I guess he will be now. He will make more money within the next few months than 99% of his peers (classmates that is) will make their entire working years. I will take a Tebow over 10 MSs any day.

That GT “only scored” 3 against LSU, but hung 45 on your sorry, can’t finish the drill, team, doesn’t say much for a “preseason” #1 ranking. Face it you DAWG fans - as long as CMR is at UGA all you will have is hopes and dreams - no real national champs. Makes me want to “howl”

Could be such an A#* at times. Some of the girls and even some of the guys wouldn’t even look in his direction when he walked around on campus and he would really get upset about that. He never supported any of the other sports teams on campus and never went to any of the boys or girls basketball games to support them. Now that he will be making all that money he can now afford to buy some friends because what friends he had at Georgia he will no longer no them.

UGA WILL NOT win a NC in 09 or any other year in the near future. UGA will lead the nation in player arrests and penalties. Leon, don’t get too depressed. After all, NASCAR starts soon and you can go VRRRRROOOOOMMM, VRRRRRROOOOOOMMMM all around your trailer park until September. You know what cheers me up? 10-3 despite losing 2 starting left tackles & reshuffling the line for the first 8 weeks of the season.
Know what else cheers me up? Knowing that Sturdivant & Owens will come back next year, signing 2 QB’s from the Elite 11 camp in the same class, getting a commitment from Branden Smith, Washon Ealey & Dexter Moody.

I think the DAWGS will be fine with Joe Cox at QB. Although he doesn’t have the arm of Stafford, I think he has more fottball intelligence. How many times have you seen Staffod take the gunslinger mentality? I can make up for bad reads with my arm. Sounds familiar! Can anyone say Brett Fave. Joe Cox’s “lack” of an arm has made him be more of a student of the game. If you check his record at Indepence High you will see that he’s a winner. Good luck to Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. Thanks for the memories

Didn’t read all the other comments, but I will say that Mr. King? doesn’t excite me with his comments. But what were they based on. I’m a frequent reader and hadn’t seen his name before, must have missed him. That being said, I truly believe that precluding any more exits through injuries, grades or stupidity, that Georgia will go into the Florida game with the SEC championship game on the line…Things are lined up similar to 2005 and Tennessee in 1999. I will miss Stafford and the plays he made (he won some games over the past couple years in the clutch and if we had stopped Tech, I believe he would have won that game too). However, I have always wondered what kind of leader he was off the field. I believe that Bobo and Richt will be creative offensively and we will have a much better defense due to guys like Owens, Banks, Washington and the like coming back and the experience the line has gained. I’m excited about this coming year. With no pressure, we can kick Okie State’s butt and all of a sudden people will realize we are a threat. I’ll miss Moreno and Stafford, they both gave Georgia all they could and I wish them both well in the NFL. I think they will both will have good careers.
Prediction for Georgia next year, 11-1 and playing in SEC championship for chance at Nat Championship game.

HEY “By UGA Class 81” were you the guy sitting in class sleeping all the time sure sound like it. So you are really proud of yourself thinking that GA will never win a NC. How could you call yourself a Class of anything especially from Georgia with so much hate for Georgia Football. Must have tried out for the team and didn’t make it so now you are angry. Keep smoking what ever you are smoking and you will be ok. Yes MS is going to the NFL and if he is lucky he will play for one of the following teams, with losing records: Detroit; St. Louis; Kansas City; San Francisco; and Houston and guess what he want be stating on either of those teams unless one of those QB does the samething that MV did to Atlanta then he might get a chance to start and if not he will be walking along the sidelines carrying someone else clipboard and wishing he was still at Georgia atleast he would be playing because which ever team he goes to the QB at that team is not going to turn over his job to a newbee and you can count on that without a fight. MS likes all the attention and being able to start each game so we will see how he handle not starting right away. Oh yes he can still go out and spend his money. By the way first of all I don’t watch NASCAR don’t live in a trailer. I live up here in Washington DC (George Town) and making a lot more money then you will ever make, have no bills, car and home paid for and a great bank account. At least when I write a check for something I have the money to back it up. Apparently you can’t say that. By the way guess you haven’t seen the schedule for this coming year I don’t see to many cupcakes teams on the schedule. CMR will use tho “one time good defense game” to keep Soft Willow and forget the rest of the bad D games last season to keep us out of any significant championships. Looking around the SEC, every top team seems to improve (shake up the defensive staff) their defense, NO! not us, we are fine like it is. I am shooting for 2nd or 3rd in the SEC East every year as long as CMR is happy with his current mind set, win 9 or 10 games every year, and he can take 2 millions pay check. Nothing to hope for anyway. Don’t tell us anymore that we are in a rebuilding year again. Me? Just beat the damn Gator with some 7, 8 win seasons will be OK. I am not wishing for SEC shamp or any champ any more, sorry. I am very proud of my UGA reputation regardless. How about you sir CMR? Spurrier’s washed up.
Defense? At South Carolina? What defense?
The Cocks gave up 56 to Florida, got run out of the stadium by a mediocre Clemson team and were blown out by Iowa, giving up 30+ points in all of those games.
At least the Dawgs held up against a lot of offensive miscues in their bowl game against a 9-3 MSU team.

I will miss knowshon’s effort and spark..he was just as good as advertised which to be honest is rare among highly touted players.Stafford stood tall as a true freshman and I guess never really had a huge leap in performance over the next two years so many would say he didn’t quite live up to the hype.On the other hand he never had a really good line..The OL has been average to subpar for his entire run.Look Searles has done a great job with what he had …how ever banding together a group of young guys into a sec unit is fantastic…. but it doesn’t mean they were that good when compared to other units in the league…but they were the best WE had.I think both kids will be budding stars by their 24th birthday. As for as team goals during their time…special teams, defense, injuries are things beyond their control,… I give them credit..they came to play every sat win or lose

I have a gut feeling that Joe Cox will have a special year next year. Let’s remember that he has not lost a game since the 7th grade. His senior year in high school he had 66 touchdown passes with only 5 interceptions. Joe knows this offense front to back and is a very bright kid.
I was impressed with his leadership vs. Colorodo a couple of years ago. Though he may not have the arm strength of Stafford, I believe he is more accurate and would be a better decision maker. That is the key to make Coach Richt’s offense work.
The tailback position worries me because of the lack of experience. Lots of talent with the likes of Samuel, King, Jackson, Thomas and Ealy. I beleive this group will make or break us next year.

Bubbadawg- do ot worry too much- the OL will improve making the running a litle easier. King or Samuel will get the bulk but Thomas will make some big plays.
This may be a pipe dream but- Logan Gray needs to learn some slot rec. so he and cox can be in the huddle at the same time. Line up as a WR 1 play then no substitutions for defense when he takes a direct snap on occasion. We need to run more no huddle in 2009.

**On the other hand, Stafford couldn’t have made a worse decision if he tried.
I hate to say it, but that’s his future.**

Tebow wins the Heisman and 2 NC’s and decides to stay for his senior year. Knowshon and Matthew don’t even play in a BCS championship game and get their a*******es handed to them by Alabama, Florida, and Tech this year and declare for the draft?!! Way to take the money and run guys. You’re not even a footnote in the history of UGA football. Whatever NFL franchise lands you will be truly blessed to have team players of YOUR caliber. I hope you both blow your knees out at the combines.

Disgraced and all you other haters, dudes, lighten up. Sweet Tebow, it’s college football, not life….well close, but not quite. I am happy for 7 and 24, wish them luck, but after this year….glad they are gone so we can move on. Plenty of talent ready to step up. If the coaches hold all players accountable, no special cases, no favorites, nobody keeps their job even if they screw up time after time….then we’ll be good. 2 losses or better? Very possible. Beat Tech? Bet your a*!!

What about Logan Gray starting as the QB ? He is fast and has a strong arm. I’m kinda surprised both Moreno and Stafford left for the NFL draft. I think Moreno could have gone higher than projected if he stayed another year at UGA. Stafford is probably making the right decision because he is projected as a top 3 pick. If he came back he couldn’t go any higher but could go lower (like Leinart did). I just hope Richt gets some defensive linemen and linebackers ready to stop Fla.,Bama’s,etc. offenses. After Jeff Owens went down there was no pass rush at all. JP Wilson and Tebow picked the defense apart with almost no pass rush on them. Can the Dawgs get a strong legged, accurate kicker too ? Fla. returning 11 on defense is scary. But the games are played on the field and not on paper…

Allen and Jones are two perfect examples of kids that should not even CONSIDER leaving early. Neither is even close to ready and both would be out of the NFL in a couple years.

Disgraced, did you see MS get his leg bent the wrong way at the beginning of the 4th quarter against Mich. St. - he was lucky to get up, that play easily could have knocked him out of football for a year maybe even 2. Both of them are smart to take the money. They are both ready and the NFL wants both of them. Why should KM put another 200 carries on his body playing for free? What else can he prove? Learn to enjoy the games and quit worrying about BCS national titles - they mean nothing. I am far more excited to see the dogs win conference titles - to me they are every bit as good as a national title. What exactly does a game played a month and sometimes 7 or 8 weeks after the season ends mean? Its almost like a preseason game. Can anyone say in 2007/2008 that Ohio St. was better than USC or GA at the end of the season - of course not. The BCS and the bowls in general are worthless.

Seriously, how would Moreno go higher? Was he going to get faster? The guy put up two great seasons. Another 200 carries at UGA would have done nothing for him. Wish these guys well and move on.

No dog tailback with talent will ever be redshirted under Mark Richt again. He learned a valuable lesson. Redshirting KM was a waste. W.E. will play next year as long as he qualifies.

Allen should spend time in the film room watching himself be beaten too many times. The scouts have and are. Yes, he is a fairly good college player but he would ride the pines in the NFL…at best. He needs another year learning how to tackle and play the area he is assigned.

Moreno is likely a late first round or early second round pick. If he had stayed another year he could have possibly won the Heisman and been a top 5 pick. That’s about $3 to $6 more million difference. Not to mention helping out his team (UGA) that made him the player he is thru coaching and blocking (as Moreno has said himself). I think players should be only seniors to go to the NFL. We have to replace the starting RB and QB now. At least Tebow had some respect for his college alma mater and team and returned…

robdawg, a heisman would not have made KM a top 5 pick. You think the NFL doesn’t know about KM? You think the NFL is just discovering him? PUHLEEEZZZE!! He owes something to UGA????? He owes them nothing, he helped them win 21 games in two seasons including a #2 national finish and a top 10. He owes them NOTHING. The way KM runs with hard cuts, he only has so many carries before a knee blows out, thats reality. Good luck to him. As far as they have to be seniors, how do you keep someone from earning a living? You don’t know what these kids financial stiuation is or what their dream is. Tebow, obviously enjoys the college game and quite honestly his pro prospects do not match either KM or MS.

CRS, You are correct. He owes Georgia nothing!!! He signed on believing he would play in BCS Championship Games and he played in one Sugar Bowl. Florida recruited him hard and they may have won a National Championship if he had signed. OOPS!!!!

I for one am sickened by the under-achievement of the Dawgs this past season. No fire, expecting to win on atheticism alone … and especially having no team unity. Stafford and Moreno, while both gifted athletes, are nothing more than selfish primadonas and I’m glad to see them go. As a lifelong Dawg fan, I say CMR needs to wake up and get control the team unity and discipline … otherwise we will continue to lose to the Gators and (God forbid) Tech.

Nice assesment the CRS… So a running back leaps to the NFL to save his knees ? I think every player owes its college something. They get a free ride financially and are allowed to showcase their talent to get drafted into the NFL. It is a two-way street. Both the college and the athlete benefit from each other. So based on your thinking Moreno blows his knee out in year 2 or 3 then has no degree to fall back on leaving college early ? And don’t tell me he will invest his rookie millions either. He will blow that money like its going out of style…I think Moreno can play 10 years in the NFL. Fact is one more year might have made him another $3 million and got UGA a NC. UGA fans can call him No-Show Moreno now…
