Welcome to the hot seat, Willie
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So the Willie Martinez issue appears to have been settled, and in fact isn’t really an issue at all, from what we’re told. Mark Richt supports his staff, including the fans’ favorite whipping boy, Martinez, and Damon Evans supports Mark Richt.
End of story, right?
Well, maybe not. There’s a wild card in Georgia athletics that hasn’t been heard from … UGA President Michael Adams, who in the past has shown no reluctance about pulling the trigger on decisions that his athletic director isn’t ready to make.
If, heaven forbid, Javon Ringer and the Spartans run up and down the field against the Dawgs in the bowl game and Martinez’s defense again gives up 30-plus points in a loss, will Adams be willing to sit back and let things ride? Or will he call Richt in and tell him Georgia can’t go another season with such woeful defense and the only change that can be made needs to be made without delay?
Even if Adams doesn’t intercede and Martinez’s job is safe for another year, his defense’s performance in the bowl is going to be closely scrutinized. And if it’s another bad day, the pressure and debate will do nothing but increase during the off-season.
Even in the best-case scenario, next year would seem to be make-or-break for Martinez. Another bad year for the D and Richt might find himself being dragged down if he isn’t willing to cut Martinez loose.
Generally, there’s only room for one on the hot seat. Right now, it’s Martinez who occupies it.

He better show some serious improvement in the bowl game and next season. The defense was awful this year, along with the special teams. Ugh. How about Tubbs or Chavis for DC?

I am so sick of hearing about Willie Martinez I might barf all over my keyboard. Can we stop b__ching and moaning for just a couple of weeks and enjoy the bowl game? Its been nothing but a river of tears out of the Bulldog nation from the very first snap of the season. Its just one thing after another. First we cried because we lost the #1 ranking. What a waste of energy that turned out to be. Now its been month after month after month of crying about Willie Martinez and the defense. I thought it might slow down with the end of the regular season but I was clearly wrong. As bad as the defense played this year, they had a much better performance than our fans did. Maybe it would have helped if there had been a little more positive energy around this team instead of a bunch of crybabies stomping their feet because they didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas. That about sums it up. Good day.

Crybabies? I was impressed how everyone, students especially, didn’t throw in the towel by halftime of the Alabama game. The stadium kept full and a’rockin and we stayed behind our Dawgs for 4 full quarters.
Yes, there were high expectations going into this season, but I don’t think they were necessairly unwarranted. Our defense demolished Hawaii/Colt Brennan, we didn’t lose much perceived talent, and we had momentum.
Balance everything out… Stafford still doesn’t make the best decisions in the world all the time, but it wasn’t our offense who finished off our title dreams. Poor Defense and sloppy Special Teams rightly deserve a very close scrutiny.
If Willie wasn’t college roomies with Richt, you think he’d still be around?

Anybody with a brain, and to good eyes can see this coach is’nt up to standards, I mean Tuberville loses his job, Fulmer loses his job, and these were head coaches who won cosistently! Why bulldog nation due you tolerate this? ARE WE CONTENT WITH SECOND IN THE EAST, or are we striving for #1 in the country. Remember dog fans this is the same coach that gave up over fifty to U.T. last year [over thirty in one half]to stop our hopes of going to the next level.Just a thought, but maybe if Coach Richt starts feeling a little pressure he’ll shake the staff up a little. Until then you will be watching the gators play for championships.

Go Gators, good luck in the title game. Just remember we helped to put you there by being highly ranked when you whipped us this year. Your welcome.
I have advocated that Willie doesn’t necessarily need to be fired. Maybe demoted or just hire in a co-DC that will help him out. That way everybody saves face and hopefully we get 14 COMPLETE games of defense. I am glad that Owens is back next year and with those DE’s that are suppose to be coming in we will have a pass rush back.
Go Dawgs and please beat State. I will never hear the end of it if you don’t.

ATLDawg & others, if you are so tired of hearing about us griping about Martinez then why don’t you quit reading & responding on these blogs. Time will prove Martinez’ weaknesses & just how much destruction/damage Richt allows to UGA is all up to Richt. I may truly believe in my heart that should have been a professional quarterback & with enough positive thinking & prayer that it would’ve come true, but the reality is that if I wasn’t. Bottom line, Willie Martinez is not a good, major college defensive coordinator, positive statement or not.

Hell yea Willie needs to be put on the hot seat! Saban or Meyer wouldn’t put up with a non-productive dee cord and we shouldn’t either. Van Gorder (hell of a job with Falcons) had one game with 30 or more points scored, Martinez 11 and counting. Martinez just got a $32,000 bonus….This is a slap in the face to hard working Georgia fans!

It was only 13 months ago that Florida was licking its wounds from a butt-kicking in the cocktail party (with tears streaming down Tebow’s cheeks), and only about 12 months ago they were getting beat by a Michigan team that lost to Appy State earlier in the year. Now they are kings of the world who are guaranteed SEC East dominance forever, to here them tell it.
Newflash - Tim Tebow is a once-a-generation recruit. It’s not going to get easier after he leaves, believe me. Georgia found that out after Herschel left (one difference - unlike UF during Tebow’s tenure, Georgia didn’t have an off year during Herschel’s reign…it’s actually hard to go 9-4 with a player as good as Tebow). Every dog has his day, and Florida had theirs the day Tebow chose UF over Alabama. If there’s a God, and I know there is, Oklahoma will put these obnoxious Gator a-holes in their place.

Go Gators, when you guys finally LEAD the SERIES between the two teams you can call yourself daddy. Until then we still have about 9 “beatdowns” on your gators. Of course for most of you obnoxious gator fans your football program was started in 1990. For the other fans who have class, they understand that the recent run of success for the Gators is a once in awhile occurrance in any college sport and they represent the school with some dignity and humility. With all the great teams and players that Spurrier had he managed 1 NC. You should count yourself lucky to be in the position you are in.

Go Gators, so true - Herschel was so long ago. Our 13-1, SEC Championship season was only 6 years ago, though. And your 9-4 season was only last year. And you were licking your wounds from a Cocktail Party beatdown only last year. You were losing to Ole Miss only a few months ago. Things change. I hope the NFL Draft Advisory Board tells Tebow that he’s a cinch top-3 pick…then reality will hit Gainesville hard. Unless you think there’s another quarterback out there who’s good for 5 yards a carry off tackle. Doubt we’ll see Tebow’s likes again anytime soon.

Georgia still has a fairly comfortable lead in the overall series, so I guess that makes about 4 decades of beatdowns for Georgia. It’s called history, and it takes more than 18 years to erase Florida’s lack of history and tradition.
And 59 years without an SEC title…Wow. How many championships will Florida have to win to erase the stain of 6 decades of futility? It will take more than 18 years of success, that’s for sure.

Willie’s 2009 season begins with the bowlgame——in more ways then one. If the defense doesn’t play, starting in the bowl, any better this comming year than in 2008, Willie is gone, no matter how much Richt whines.
I myself will give Willie one more year to show he is not incompetent, and, if the defense is not very, and I mean very, much improved, then I will not give a damn cent to the Hartman Fund nor buy any more season tickets until Willie hits the trail. I think if enough of us who contribute say what we think with our money (or the lack of it), one can bet the doghouse that Michael Adams will get the message and get rid of Willie, and Richt as well, if need be. That’s why Tennessee got rid of Fulmer. They could see the dollars drying up.
This is not 1959, when I first started going to Sanford Stadium. This is 2009 (nearly). Money talks and it talks big time. Just ask old Phil…national championship ring and all.

Is it just me, or does it seem like these journalists at the AJC write articles just to get everyone riled up. I mean, haven’t we talked enough about Willie Martinez? I feel like we’re beating a dead horse here. Jeff Owens returning was a very nice early Christmas present. I think him and Rennie will be key playmakers next year and I honestly think the defense will be much improved. But I do agree that the 2009 season starts with this bowl game. I really hope our defense shows up just so people will stop b*** for a little while. You know what they say: winning heals all wounds. We reeeally need this win.
To those of you who said the Meyer or Saban wouldn’t put up with a defensive performance like ours this year: they already did. Florida was in the same exact position as us last year because of their defense. Charlie Strong was on the hot seat, and look what happened to them this year. Saban’s team last year lost 5 or 6 games I think.
On another note, Florida’s going to be reeeeally hurting when Tebow leaves. I don’t even think they realize how much it’s going to affect them on a number of levels. It’s not everyday you have a Heisman trohpy winner on your team. They should spend more time enjoying these years with Tebow then worrying so much about us. These are their glory years and they won’t be for much longer.

Go Gators- With the number of times you’ve posted on a Georgia blog, you really could’ve fooled me. That bored, huh?
“Worrying about you guys don’t make me laugh…Show’s how little you guys understand about UF.” -Didn’t your players have our endzone dance playing on repeat in the locker room this year as well as posters of it hanging up everywhere? Didn’t they have it circled on their calendar since last year? Didn’t Urban Meyer write about it in his book? I’m pretty sure they were way more concerned with beating us this year and getting their revenge than they were beating FSU. Anyways, you guys beat us and you’re playing for the NC game. Enjoy it. There’s a way to do so without bringing other people down. See Atlanta Gator. He sets a great example for your fans. I will be rooting for your team on January 8th but I do think you should take a cue from Atlanta Gator and learn some humility.
Man, one win (by 3 points I might add) in 7 years and Tech is suddenly becoming our big brother? That’s pretty funny.
Big Dawg- I think Florida will pull out the win in a really close game. The quarterbacks are going to be key. They’ll both have to have a near-perfect game.

Surely we aren’t resorting to calling on Adams to fix something we’ve forever said he has no clue about. It is only Richt’s place to make staff changes. He will have to be held accountable for the staff eventually. It is not Adams’ or Evans’ place to tell him what to do but only to hold him responsible for any failures. If Richt allows Willie to take him down, so be it.

I seem to recall Coach Martinez’s game plans looked great in the first half against Tech. It just wasn’t executed in the second half by the players. Shoulder tackles and shoestring grabbing aren’t very effective. It wasn’t Willie who threw the pick six either. In every one of UGA’s three losses the D was on the field way too long in very short fields to work with, meaning the offense was not sustaining drives or just plain turning it over. Bobo abandoned the run in all three losses as well. I won’t blame Willie for any of that.

Douglas, I agree whole heartedly. Dennis Felton has not coached well since he has been at UGA. He loses to high school teams. The basketball talent that comes from the state of Georgia alone should have him playing in championships, but they don’t want to go there in fear of being made look foolish. I for one am very tired of it. It is ridiculous that we can’t ever find a big name coach for basketball. With a big name the instate talent will stay and we can be successful. Delaying the pink slip process only sends the program back years. We should be successful in every sport, this state is loaded with athletes!!

Injuries to D-Line: Owens (knee), Weston (knee), Battle (neck), Lomax (foot).
Injuries to LB: Washington (shoulder), Dewberry (shoulder), White (achilles), Hebron (leg/ankle), Ellerbee (knee), Robinson (arm), Gamble (leg).
Injuries to DB: Evans (knee), Banks (knee)
These are just the injuries on the defensive side of the ball. The guys didn’t get much contact in practice and that shows up on the field — you play like you practice!
Give Willie a chance with some healthy guys and see what he can do. If he can’t right the ship, he’ll be gone. You have to have the right tools to get the job done.

Shifting gears a bit, but I too think Dennis Felton will be on a very hot seat by season’s end of things don’t change pretty quickly. I thought the BB ‘Dogs would have 10 wins by Jan.1st, but now I doubt it. They appear to be hard pressed to win 20 this year. I think winning the SEC Tournament last season bought him another year, but that’s about it. It is time to start blowing out these exhibition games, and start winning at least 60% at home and 50% on the road. It will be an interesting year. Have heard rumblings that Tubby wants to get back to Athens. Interesting. As always, time will tell.

You dawg fans tickle me. In 2007 Florida’s defense was awful because they had young, inexperienced players but no one was calling for Charlie Strong’s head. This year they have one of the top defenses in the country because they got more players and their young players got much needed experience.

To me the problem isn’t the bowl game, but the first game of next season. The bowl game will comprise this year’s team and we know the struggles they’ve had. The 2009 team will be a new team with the potential of new talent and a new attitude of commitment to excellence. We’ll see how they stack up when they face one of the more prolific offenses in the Big 12.

Let’s get some things straight around here…no real Dawg fan gives a rat’s-rearend what Michael Adams says and if what you want is for the football program to revert to the Goff/Donnan days then you continue to criticize Mark Richt’s decision-making - whether it’s about Martinez or any other coach - and you’ll see just how long it’ll take him to bail. We’ve got a good thing going folks and we’re gonna win more than our share against the Floridas and the Techs and everybody else we play. So lay off…and while I’m at it, who asked Bill King to chime in with a Michael Adams’ monkey wrench, anyway?
As for Felton, no coach - not Felton, not Chubby, not anybody - will put a winning program together until the fans start to show up and support whoever’s out there. A half-empty Stegman for Wofford - a game Georgia didn’t deserve to win - and I expect at least as bad with whatever an A&M-CC is. I ask you, what decent high-school BB player would even consider coming to Georgia with a following like that? Nobody, that’s who.

Carlton, Tubby wants to come back to Athens? I didn’t blamed him for leaving the first time around. KY is one of the dream jobs out there. Tubby has to be getting tired of the snow and ice and sub zero wind chills. If Felton has to go I hope UGA puts up the dough to get Tubby back.

gdawginkalamazoo: Don’t put too much stock in the notion of Tubby coming back to Athens. That’s just scuttlebutt around the grocery store, etc. here in Athens. I, myself, don’t buy it. What’s the saying about going home again?? It’s tough. I hate that we don’t have decent hoops at UGA. Makes the winter long and dreary.

People, Martinez will be around for at lease another year. If you look at FLA last year when they went 9-4 and lost their bowl game to a MICH team that got beat the same year by AppSt, and then FLA comes back this year w/ a strong ‘D’. But if you look from another angle, you can see the steady decline of UGA’s ‘D’ since 2004, or after Van Gorders departure. Couple that w/ the way the Falcons are playing and it seems there is an obvious drop-off due to coaching (or lack of). Bottom line: Martinez will be here through 2009, and if they end up bad but in the top 8-10 in the SEC, he’ll be here longer, unless a drop-off in offence means we lose another 3-5 games. 5-7 will equal somebody’s ‘boy’ being fired.

This year of UGA football reminds me of something happened at the lake a few years ago. This guy was in a hurry to start fishing, and he launches his bass boat without putting in the drain plug. He eases out in the lake and before he knew it, the water was up to his ankles, he poured on the gas, and started bailing with his hat and bilge pump, all of which did little good. In desperation, he ran it up on dry land, where it sat and slowly drained dry, but everything was waterlogged. His day of fishing was ruined, plus the bottom of his boat was likely ruined. NOW, having said this, do you see how this situation compares with UGA football? I do. If nothing is done pronto, down to the bottom next season will go.

Carlton, It would be nice to have the hoops program moving in a more positive direction. Tubby had some success and he could have recruited the players to make a serious run. He is that good of a coach IMO. I haven’t spent a winter in Athens in a number of years but it can’t be as dreary as the fckng foot of snow we have on the ground here. 6 degrees Monday (wind chill -16). Today we get treated to rain, rain/sleet, freezing rain changing over to freezing mother-effing snow, then lake effect snow. Then on Friday 40 degrees and rain again. Just enough to make everything a slushy mess. The snow and ice can be scenic at times and sometimes down right beautiful as long as you aren’t viewing it from the median while waiting for a tow truck.

I hate to agree with a gator fan, but we have no business talking trash to them. In 07 we played with an attitude and basically punched them in the mouth, this year we apologized by laying down for them. Do we honestly think Meyer will lay down next year, no. gadawginkalamazoo: I certainly feel your pain. Spent 18 years in the Commonwealth of VA, and I realize it was no where near as bad as your description, but I agree it’s not so bad here in Athens. Just wish we had a decent hoops program to watch. Hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas. Will write if I hear any further details. Big question is whether Matt Stafford really want to be taken first in the NFL draft and be sentenced to the Detroit Lions. The Lions are a disgrace to the once proud franchise. Again, Merry Christmas to all!!

You need to lay off Willie Martinez. Everyone has gotten bent out of shape because Georgia Tech dropped 45 points on Martinez’s defense. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Paul Johnson’s triple option has become an unstoppable juggernaut. The only way to beat Tech now is on offense—to score points more efficiently than Tech. Let them beat themselves with turnovers or mistakes. Problem is, it’s going to be hard to find an offense more efficient than the triple option. That thing can ring up 2 dozen points before you can say: Woof, woof. Still, if you want to place blame, it’s the offense. If Tech scores 45, then Richt has to find a way to score 46. It’s just that simple.

Anyway you slice it, he is on the hot seat and deserves to be there. this defense has not lived up to expectations. We either get a great offense and no D, or the other way around. one day maybe we will get it right, i like Martinez and he probably is a good guy but, his defense has to perform. Last I checked that was his job and just like on my job I am paid to do the job.

I almost always pull for the SEC in bowl games, but this year I will be pulling for Oklahoma in the national championship. The a**hole gator fans on this blog and everywhere else have easily made that decision for me. They have zero class, but like the rest of the SEC says, “no one likes Florida except Florida!”
As for Martinez, I hope too that he figures things out and that our defense is second to none next year, but don’t act like Georgia fans haven’t had a reason to complain this year! We absolulely continued to show up and support our team (despite the spin that ATLDawg wants to put on it), yet we have every right to speak out when something is ineffective. I think we can all agree that if Martinez figures things out next year like he did in the bowl game (amazing how rushing the QB makes a huge difference, isn’t it??), we’ll all be singing his praises. Until then, he deserves the criticism he gets!
