Calling Soulja Boy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A lot of Georgia fans are convinced that no matter how bad Auburn has looked at times this season, the Tigers will play their best football so far this year against the Dawgs on Saturday.
It’s just part of the contrary nature of this always close series between two intertwined programs that recruit the same territory and hire each others’ grads as coaches. The fact that the visiting team often has the edge may favor the Bulldogs, but this is also a rivalry where the unranked team frequently pulls an upset (see Georgia’s totally unexpected domination in 2006).
On paper, this year’s matchup looks to favor the Dawgs: Georgia’s explosive offense against Auburn’s good but not great defense, and Georgia’s frequently ineffective defense against Auburn’s frequently ineffective offense. Auburn gets the edge on special teams, but you’ve got to figure that the Dawgs will show some improvement in that area this week (they could hardly be worse than last week). And Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, Mohamed Massaquoi and A.J. Green should prove too much for the Plainsmen.
But this is Georgia-Auburn, so there are no sure things.
The gut feeling is that in order to win out, the Dawgs are going to have to turn a page, like they did midseason last year. Georgia’s defensive players have talked the talk this week about getting back to basics, back to hardhitting, Dawgs D. And more importantly, about having fun.
They’re on to something there. See, that’s what I think has been missing much of this season … the fun. The swagger. The aggressive confidence. I’m not talking about a bunch of stupid personal foul or taunting penalties, either. I’m talking about the kind of swarming, lights-out defense that Hawaii saw in the bowl game and, overall, the kind of let’s-dance mentality that irritated Auburn so a year ago.
That Soulja Boy spirit.
Whether it was brought on by the lofty pre-season ranking that made them take themselves too seriously, a lack of strong on-the-field leadership, or the coaching staff having a lack of confidence in its patched-up lineup, the Dawgs have too often played tight and conservative this season.
A good portion of the blame can be laid at Richt’s door. Whereas last season he managed to get in touch with his inner Hurricane/Seminole bad boy, this year he’s reverted to Mr. Nice Guy.
We don’t need Mr. Nice Guy on the sidelines or on the field the rest of this season.
We need Soulja Boy.

That Soulja Boy Crap is just another example of a fine program sinking to the depths of show-off material. Dancing on Vandy’s V, the Gator Stomp, and the Soulja Boy at Auburn is embarassing. It caught up with them in 2008, and it will for years to come.

Get rid of the jumbotron, get rid of the piped-in music, bring back the junk yard dawgs. The only sound from the stadium should be bands, fans, and the occasional pa announcer. That souljah boy crap needs to be buried along with the black jersies. GATA

Uh, you guys don’t appear to have gotten what he’s talking about here.
Not the song Soulja Boy itself.
He’s talking about the fun, loose attitude that characterized last year’s Dogs.

I would love to see UGA crush the Lee County Vet school. UGA wins but only by a field goal in usual sloppy fashion. I bet all the old UGA people hate this new thugery. Just play ball you bunch of sissy boys.
What is GATA?

Bill, I have to say I agree with you completely, and I think some people have their britches a little too tight. That Auburn game last year was by far the best UGA game I’ve ever gone too, and I’ve been to a lot. It’s something I will never forget because I had sooo much fun, and I could tell the players did too. Even today I still YouTube the video of all the players (and the ESPN announcers) dancing and it makes me smile. These players are kids. 18, 19, 20 years old. If they can’t have fun at a sport that they devote so much time to, than that’s sad. We’d showed no disrespect by dancing on the sideline of our own stadium. The Auburn players should have been more concerned with spoiling our good time by playing better than they did. Besides having fun, we had so much passion and fire, which is something I agree that we’re missing this year.
All this crap about teams upset with us and “getting revenge” is ridiculous. That’s not why you win or lose games. You win and lose games because of the way you play. Period. We didn’t lose to Bama and Fla because something “caught up with them.” We lost because we didn’t play well. I think if our boys were less concerned with preseason rankings and the media and had a little more fun this year, we would have competed better.
Also, I want to make one thing clear for CB: It really grinds my gears when people mistake what happened at the Vandy game. We did NOT “dance” on their V. Coutu had just kicked a field goal to win the game. The players ran over to where he was (on the V) and congratulated him.
Great article, Bill. Let’s hope the dawgs can get their swagger back and punish Auburn. Go Dawgs!!

GATA was coined by the late,GREAT Erk Russell who, by the way, would have been appalled by the behavior & actions of this wus D & the entire Ga. team. Celebrating & dancing around after making 1 play or takle & then getting your a* whipped or burned on the next many. This bunch is an embarrassment to the history of UGA defenses. They don’t have the character or heart to “Get After Their Asses”. These guys would be sitting on the bench for Erk after getting whipped up front & missing tackles. 10 wins is a great accomplishment, but the way & manner that one gets their is just as important. I told some friends at breakfast the Sun morning after the Ala whipping that I would have felt better had I walked out of the Cont. Ed building on Sun morn & heard the Dawgs out there cracking heads at practice. I didn’t, but I read the next day that Urban had Fla at practice that very Sunday morn. after losing to Ole Miss. There’s your difference.

Red Elephant, you ALA fans are killing me!! BAMA hasn’t won or been to a SEC championship in how many years??? BAMA hasn’t beat AU at ALA in what, 20years?? AU has taken ALA to the woodshed 6 years in a row! UGA has beaten ALA 3 out of the last 4 times. ALA got beat by Louisiana Monroe last year and 2 years in a row by Miss St. & 6 by AU. ALA has one good season (so far, by the way, cause it ain’t over yet), but the arrogance of the BAMA fans that I have seen is un-candid. We are talking about a middle-of-the-road SEC team that has happen to have a good year and NOW the BAMA fans are cocky? I know you aren’t used to being here, but I remind you that’s it’s always easier to sneak-up on people than to be expected to be good and have EVERYONE gaming for you. I used to kinda like BAMA in games when they weren’t playing UGA, but I’ve changed my mind; As much as I despise the GATORS I hope they wipe the field with your Crimson in the SEC Championship game.

Bama fans- reality is going to hit you when you play Fla. Please tell me that you don’t actually think you have a chance against us. Fla is by far the best team in the country and I doubt they’ll have a close game the rest of the year, including the NC. Your “just don’t lose the game for us” QB is going to get smacked in the mouth when you get to ATl. Mt. Cody won’t have to worry about stuffing the middle when we sprint past his fat a$$ on the outside. Beatdown in Atl. Gators 40-10. NC-Gators 45-Big 12 champ 17.

I agree that our D looked outstanding against Hawaii but please…Hawaii didn’t belong on that field with UGA. So they were undefeated, big whoop, how many teams did they even play who finished with winning records. The only half way respectable team they played was Boise St.

2N4, I hear ya. Here I’ve been pulling for Alabama all season. You’ve got the number 1 team in the country, are looking at the SECCG and BCS and possibly taking the NC, and the fans are on the ajc talking smack about week 4.
Nothing to indicate those aren’t GT posts though. Tech posters tend to wear masks.

To be a champion you have to play like one. UGA has not done that. If your going to lose, you have to at least look good and play hard and lose a hard fought battle. Looking like $^#&$ and getting embarassed isn’t gonna do it. They looked like %&$#$ last year at home against a far inferior S.C. They got blown out at home against UT. They decided to do this the same year they finally decide to beat Fla. We all know what happened this year.
Can anyone remember the last game (against a real opponent) that the dawgs have won and looked good on almost every aspect of the game?

GATA is a hold over from the Erk Russell days. It simply means we are going to play like our hair is on fire the whole game, regaurdless of the talent level on the field. Believe me it works. It worked for Erk in high school (state championship) It worked at UGA (national championship) and it worked at Ga Southern (several 1-AA national championships) GATA heck it works for me in the business world.

2N4 Years,
Talk about psychological projection!! How was I being Cocky? Where did I put UGA down? I want UGA to beat Auburn. I’m just stating that this sideline drama would never occured under Dooley.
Auburn has beaten us the last 6 years because they had the better team. I give them all the credit in the world. This has been the worst period in UA Football History since Ears Whitworth.
That said, Do you REALLY want to talk statistics with ME? I was born in 1960. Just in my lifetime my alma mater has won 7 National Championships and 16 SEC Championships. Do you like apples? Well how do you like them apples?

Red Elephant, I was referring to your comment “just play ball you bunch of sissy boys.” By saying ‘Boys’ and not specifying means that you were undoubtedly talking about ALL of the ‘Boys’ involved, which includes UGA. My point was how in the H3LL can you call either AU or UGA ‘sissy boys’ after a 1-9 combined record against AU & UGA the last ten games BAMA has played them?? THAT’s arrogance. Or better yet, stupidity. And we can talk about this “we’ve one 7 National Championships blah, blah, blah” as much as you’d like. I could sit here and and yap about how well UGA played FLA in the 70’s & 80’s too, but unfortunately we’re in the 2000’s. And you really scared me with that “don’t mess with the Bull young man” comment. You may get taken to the wood shed before ALA does. And for your APPLES comment, maybe you should call yourself Red Neck rather than Red Elephant. Good Day.

For all of those fans who are wanting Coach Martinez, Coach Fabris, and Coach Bobo fired, I have a suggestion. Go to Coach Richt in Athens and make your superior intellect and abilities available to him so that you can show us how it’s supposed to be done. Then maybe Georgia will win every game 56-0 and shut up all of those Dawg haters out here on the internet. I personally can’t wait until next year when some of you are calling the shots. What a great season we’re going to have. Especially the coach who will be responsible for showing Matthew Stafford how to throw the deep ball, I guess we’ll have a lot of one play drives. Oh, wait that will put too much pressure on the defense. But, i forget we’ll have a real Defensive Coordinator that will give us three and out every series. I can’t wait. Damon Evans get ready to hand out some big pay checks.

2N4Years,
My comments were from the movies The Breakfast Club (Bull & the horns) & Good Will Hunting (Apples). Sorry my humor didn’t work. I didn’t mean to disrespect UGA or yourself.
Even as a kid and in high school I liked UGA as my second team. I remember losing to you in ‘76 and it was like the world had ended. When I was a junior at Alabama in ‘80 I remember wishing we could have played each other.
Hopefully Bama can find a way to beat Tebow & Co. Good luck against the Aubies. RTR.

Three lines into DawgGirl32’s comments I couldn’t help but hear a woman’s voice based on what she wrote and then realized oh, that’s because they were written by a girl. Her comments just sounded so nice and reasoned. For the rest of the posters I usually just hear some angry guy’s voice. Georgia’s recent defensive play has had a lot to do with that I’m sure. I know it’s caused me to yell a lot more as of late. It hasn’t all been negative, of course. “THANK YOU DEMARCUS DOBBS!” comes to mind. The point of this post though, is I can’t believe some people, probably old people, have a problem with dancing to Soulja Boy during last year’s blackout. That wasn’t disrespectful. As DawgGirl32 pointed out, that was just some college kids having a good time. I had a great time watching it on tv. If the Auburn players took offense, they need to shut the hell up and remember that feeling bad is what happens when you lose! Having said that, Florida had been looking to playing us for the past year. Georgia knew it was coming, for a whole freakin’ year they knew it, and they responded by laying down 49-10. So hopefully Georgia will come into this game more ready to man up against a team looking for some payback. Lastly, you old heads need to understand that not everyone likes to only hear the Redcoat Band. I love them, and college marching bands give college football an atmosphere the pros can never match. But let’s get with the times people. The kids give so much to the game and for most of them they won’t be playing on Sundays.
And that stuff is a good thing as far as recruiting is concerned. Don’t think for a minute any recruit crossed Georgia off his list of potential schools that night because the players danced to Soulja Boy on the sideline. If anything it probably made the school more attractive, and lest we forget, the recruiting of fickle, contemporary high school kids is the lifeblood of college football.

If you’re going to dance and it’s all in the name of “kids just having fun”, then be sure to dance EVERY game, including those where you get your hind quarters handed to you (yeah, I’m sure that’ll go over well, huh?). Otherwise it just looks like you’re being arrogant and rubbing it in.
Leave the crap at home and just play football.

It depends on whether or not you have teeth, in Alabama if you smile and have teeth it’s considered rubbing it in….
I had a friend who was turned down when he went for a DL, when he smiled he had to many teeth, had to go to the dentist and have some removed….

My $1.37 worth (inflation)….
Dancing on the sidelines shows a lack of discipline. UGA is one of the most penalized teams in college football, which is also another symptom of a lack of discipline. Coincidence?
The business world has the following adage: “Be mindful of the toes you step on on your way up, they may be attached to the a-s-s you have to kiss on the way down.” Or, as Ga found out against Fla this year, what goes ‘round comes ‘round.
I believe it was Bear Bryant who coined another phrase “Act like you’ve been here before and expect to get here again.” Sage advice.
“You got something to say, say it with your shoulder pads.” That’s what my old high school coach would tell us. Also good advice. Save the trash talking for the internet Rambo’s and leave the dancing for the night clubs.
I also remember a couple/three years ago when Ga players went out on the 50 yd line at Vanderbilt and began dancing on the V. Richt, to his credit, went out there and basically shoved them off the field. Richt apologized after the game for the incident. I was proud the way Richt handled it and I was ashamed that our guys were so disrespectful. When you put that “G” on the side of your helmet, you represent all of the extended university family. I want to look at you with pride instead of distain.
For all you Internet Rambo’s who want to trash talk Bama, tell you what. Go to any BBQ joint in the great state of Alabama. 9 times of out 10, they’ve got a picture of The Bear on the wall. Go ahead and start your trash talk. Don’t worry, most hospitals have Wifi so you can log on and let us know how it went.
After the Dooley years and after the Bear Bryant years, both programs sorta got lost in the wilderness. Both programs now appear to have outstanding coaches. I look forward to some more great games in the future (uh, this year don’t count - we were just spotting you one).
