What a difference a play makes

It’s amazing how important a single moment in a game can be. Last year, Georgia scores first against Florida and lifts its game into a whole new level with the end-zone celebration. The team seemed to become infused with confidence. Florida scored. Georgia answered. The Dawgs seemed fearless, playing loose, having fun. From that point on they were unstoppable, playing with a swagger and conviction more associated with his FSU teams of the past than with any of Mark Richt’s Georgia units. I think you could have put that Georgia team up against anyone in the nation and it wouldn’t have mattered. After all, they’d beaten Florida!

This year, you could boil down the disaster in Jacksonville to one moment again, the second play from scrimmage, when mouthy Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes stuffed Knowshon Moreno and, for emphasis, kept Moreno pinned to the ground for a few seconds while he flapped his jaws instead of letting him spring up as he usually does. You could practically see the Bulldogs collectively thinking, “Oh, crap. Knowshon’s going to be ineffective today.”

Yes, Georgia moved the ball from that point, but Mike Bobo apparently had lost faith in the ability of Moreno and the Dawgs running game to punch it in, so he felt he had to get cute with the playcalling. Likewise, Matthew Stafford seemed to think he had to win this one all by himself, so he started pushing, making throws he shouldn’t have. The Dawgs were playing tight, scared. Like they had in so many games against Florida in the past.

So where do the Dawgs go from here? With their pre-season goals mostly likely out of reach now, can Richt and his staff keep the players’ heads in the game? Is playing for an 11-win season and the best available New Year’s Day bowl, the Capitol One, enough to motivate them? Can they regain at least a measure of that swagger and confidence that were so crucial late last season?

It’s not going to be easy. A key difference between this season and last has been the play of the lines, both hampered by an unlikely run of injuries and too many years of spotty, ineffective recruiting at those positions.

With an offensive line that can’t open holes, Bobo hasn’t been the same playcaller as late last season. This is where his lack of experience has been a factor; a seasoned offensive coordinator might have been better able to adjust. Bobo instead just became predictable, which is the worst thing for an offense. On top of that, Stafford obviously doesn’t trust this line, which has affected his play. He’s an extremely talented, if still uneven, quarterback and Mohamed Massaquoi and A.J. Green are brilliant, as is Moreno when he can get some space. But once the Dawgs get into the Red Zone, that doesn’t mean much if Bobo makes the wrong call or the line doesn’t get any push or players don’t execute properly.

Defensively, the lack of any pass rush has exposed the weaknesses of the Georgia secondary and coordinator Willie Martinez’s unimaginative calls. The swarming, shut-down defense of late last season has become the weakest in the conference, frequently out of position or in the wrong scheme.

And there are the penalties, of course, which show a lack of discipline. Plus the way the Dawgs wilted once they fell behind Saturday showed an alarming lack of mental toughness and focus.

Adjustments on and off the field are necessary, both in the short-term and the long-term, but for now it’s all about winning out and getting back into that unbeatable frame of mind. The pieces are, for the most part, there. Someone has to put them together. It’s time for Mark Richt to earn his big-time salary.

This is ridiculous…..the play of the game that doomed the pups was when they got off the bus to play the game….one play does not determine the outcome of a football game….or it could have been CMRs pulling the thug out of the bottle in last years end zone fiasco….Brandon Spikes bumrush on Moreno had nothing to do with the outcome….you guys just are not as good as Florida…trying playing that tune……

One thing that has been overlooked since the end of last season is the loss of key leaders among the starters. Georgia was expected to be great this year in large part because we returned most of our starters from our team last year that finished so strong. We did, however, lose some players, including senior leadership on the O-line (Velasco), D-line (Howard), and secondary (Kelin Johnson). Those were big losses, and we really need others to step into their shoes. We need leadership on the field to set the tone, fire up their teammates, and boost morale when bad things happen. That’s the coaches’ job too, but I suspect it makes a difference when you have players on the field echoing what the coaches are saying. I am surprised no one has brought this up. It may be too that those who would have been the best leaders (e.g., Owens) have gone down with injuries. At any rate it is abundantly clear that our D-line, O-line and secondary are nowhere near as good as last year and really never were. The same problems that people nitpicked in the Georgia Southern game have been the problems all season long. There certainly have been some bad breaks in the two losses this year, but we seemed to have lacked the confidence and drive to bounce back from those and make plays and at least stay in the game. I think probably our expectations were a little high to begin with. It has been an up and down season, and hopefully we can finish up and carry that over into next season, which we didn’t do this year. Go dawgs.

Excuses, Excuses. The rest of the country knows you are all hype, stop embarassing yourselves and just admit you are an average program, every year it is the same with you people, its because of this or its because of that. I’ll tell you what it is, you all are never a good enough football team to be considered among the elite teams, plain and simple

I wonder if the play that doomed the Bulldogs was when the interception got taken away due to the personal foul in the first quarter, or maybe when Richt lost his challenge to Tebow’s first down run. I think both of those happened on the same series (I could be wrong). Though in reality neither of those calls was that bad, maybe the players started to think that the refs had it in for them and no matter what they did the refs were going to give Fla. calls. I’m just speculating, but it seems like something similar to what happened against Alabama when we got that fumble recovery taken away because of a roughing the passer call in the first quarter. Maybe the dogs need to work on not letting the refs get in their heads?

The turning point of the game was when the coaching staff panicked and tried the onsides kick in the first half (ie. another turn-over) spotting FL another 7. That is when the GA team realized that its own coaching staff did not have the confidence in them to play toe-to-to fundamental football with FL. What a gamble so early in a game - not sound - nothing to gain - everything to lose. Ridiculous waste of a season.

Agree w/ Andy, plus more. What we have not seen discussed is the referees’ contribution to the UF victory. UGA made huge mistakes in execution. There’s plenty of discussion around that, and should be. Now: What put UGA in the position to make those huge errors was 3 or 4 major missed calls. They were blatant enough that I don’t even have to list them here.

The comment about the lines is right on. We have lost major contributors this year. Tech is about the feel the discomfort of losing linemen and seeing how that effects so much. These are not excuses. They are facts that we have to live with. We are gaining experience for many who wouldn’t have normally been playing. We are still having a good year but it takes a hit with where we expected to be. Let’s enjoy the year and cheer on the DAWGS! They deserve our support. 11-2 doesn’t sound too bad???? Go DAWGS!

Attack the LOS on defense and we have a better chance of overcoming mistakes, ours and the officials’. Break on a few balls in the secondary occasionally. Make something happen physically rather than a panic onside kick from the 30 yard line. We need some DEs worse than we need OLinemen. Somebody make this team get serious…PLEASE!

However, something’s gotta give - Little Willie is the Defensive Coordinator that couldn’t. His PPG has only gotten worse year after year having taken over the reins from van Gorder. What’s worse, he can’t figure out how to coach up the D-unit, so “go out and play hard” = penalties. No direction, no game planning, no coaching, no sense.

Thanks Little Willie, you suck.

…who, on the interception penalty, saw the UF offensive tackle put his hands to the face of the UGA DT who then got caught retaliating. But, that’s the game and you take the good with the bad, and boy, were the Dawgs bad in the second half on Saturday! You cannot blame the refs for the blowout, but you sure can blame #7 for the dumba$$ out route throw that “turned the game around” (in his own words) making it 21-3 instead of potentially 14-10 (more likely, 14-6).

I agree with Jasper Sanks. The turning point in the game was when Richt ordered the onside kick in the 2nd quarter with the team down by a miniscule 4 points. It was the worst call of his career and went against everything he stands for. Up to that point, Florida had not made it to the endzone without the help of the officials. Our defense was playing fine. The offense had been moving the ball fine. There was no need for panic. No need to get cute. No need to try and outwit anyone. Just kick the damn ball, pin them back, and play defense. Kicking the onside kick sent the wrong message to the team. Even if it had worked it would have still sent the same message. It told them that their head coach didn’t think they were good enough to win the game without some luck. They surely were doubting themselves after that stunt and it showed. It was an absolutely horrendous call and in my opinion had a great impact on the outcome of the game. Yes, football games often do come down to one moment or one play, even the ones that get out of hand. When two teams are as evenly matched as Florida and Georgia the difference comes down to what’s going on in between the ears. People ask how such an ugly loss can happen and I have told you exactly how.

So Bill, what to do? The red zone difficulties were obvious in the Tenn. and Vandy games but Richt and Bobo apparently hoped that the problem would just disappear. As you said the play selection was uninspired and predictable When it’s 2nd and 2 from the 10 and Moreno is heading to the sideline Richt should have pointed him back to the huddle; whose the coach on this team?. These guys baffle me; our most effective running plays since the middle of last season are toss sweeps which GA did not run till the middle of the 2nd quarter against Florida. We still try those horrible inside screens which have never worked. Apparently we’ve abandoned the short screen to a in motion Moreno which were so effective last season and the beginning of this one.

It seems that Bobo is too busy with his 4 youngsters to spend much time analyzing game film much less work on some new scenarios ( LIKE AN OPTION.) I would love to see what a Borges or Cutcliffe would do with these offensive capabilities.

Despite the score this game was eminently winnable; the offensive coaches basically gave away the first half with some ref assistance. It getting tiresome to see all this talent wasted by an uninspiring and predictable offensive scheme in these big national showdowns. Guys can blame Martinez all the want; this ones on Richt and Bobo.

I agree with AtlDawg and “Jasper Sanks” about the onside kick. I was in shock when they tried that and felt numb when it went wrong. That is a play you try when the defense can’t stop the other team in a shootout…not when you are down 7 to 3. With that said, I also view the nullified interception, missed FGs, and missed TD reception as big game-changing moments. Way to many mistakes against a team like UF.

Bill, so CMR has not been earning his salary up to this point? Face the facts CMR has elevated HIS program to a level where HIS teams are in the mix for the SEC and therefor the MNC nearly every year. He has brought a level of excitement to UGA not seen since the early 80’s. I say he has earned his salary. Now what have you accomplished besides running around whining that UGA doesn’t go 14-0 every year? Fla was simply the better team Sat as was Ala a few weeks ago. It is not a program killer to lose to a good team or two. If you had looked at the sched and predicted better than 10-2 you were thinking with you heart and not your head. We’re 2-6 against Florida under Richt. We ain’t executing, Coach.

I hear you saying that to be just average is OK with you????

Exactly right Bill, except one thing. It was not the on side kick, but the horrible pic Stafford threw and the return to the one yard line that did it. The air in the team just left the stadium. Face it, guys, we are pysched out big time with the Gators, for some reason. Year after year. Lousy ineffective defense, poor red zone play, and we just don’t play tough never give in type football when we have to in the big games. There are exceptions of course. But we just don’t seem that tough anymore. Erk Russell would not stand for this. We have the talent, but just not the fight we should have. Frustrating.

Bill,

A. Your targeting one specific play as a turning point in the Fla. Game is Off Base my friend. We were in the hunt - even down 21-3. Everything fell apart and continued to fall apart until the bitter end. The end included a very class act of UB calling TD Passes with Timeouts in the 4th qtr while leading by 32 and 37 points.

B. Finally someone in the media placing responsibility where it belongs - Bobo & Martinez. I played ball (awhile ago) and can tell you that in the 80s Dooley would walk by a player without speaking a word - but the players really respected the ACs (Assistant Coaches) and that’s where they went when they needed confidence. Bobo & Martinez quite obviously do not provide that. Many Dawg Fans were calling for Martinez & Bobo to leave last season.

I repeat, if Richt does not make changes at season-end, the responsibility will be on his shoulders next season - and justifiably so.

When kickoffs were made from the 40, an onside kick, if it failed, would give the other team the ball near midfield ( the minimum 10 yards ). When kickoffs moved back to the 35, the kicking team’s 45 became the point of possible possesion. Now that kickoffs are from the 30, the kicking team’s 40 yard line is the potential placement for the receiving team. This makes the risks of an onside kick too high unless you are at least in the 4th quarter and behind sigificantly without enough time to score enough points to win even if you forced a 3 and out on the receiving team. I don’t understand why the coaches were so desperate that they felt this ploy was necessary. A “surprise” onside kick might make sense if you were ahead, playing good defense, and wanted to “go for the jugular”. Otherwise, that move makes no sense.

When you open the offensive game with a middle screen, the message to your team is: we can’t physically play with these guys; we have to trick them. When you execute an on-side kick early in the game, down by four points, the message to your team is: we can’t physically play with these guys; we have to catch them off guard. The coaching staff lost this game, and the UA game through lack of preparation. The coaching staff has also ensured that the opponents in our wins stayed in the game as well. There is a lack of leadership apparent throughout the ranks of the team — from coaches down to the players. The current coaching staff at UGA will be owned by Meyer and Saban into the future. They are simply better program builders, motivators and teachers. They are far superior coaches, period.

The play of the game was that ridiculous onside kick, not Knowshon getting stuffed on a run play. Why in the world would you attempt this and practically give them 7 points if it doesn’t work?? Our defense cannot be put in a situation like that against a team like Florida. This one play changed the entire complexion of the game in my opinion. Florida scores and goes up 14-3 and it was downhill from there.

Similarly, I thought Richt made a huge blunder against Alabama. And this was before the opening kick! Deferring to the 2nd half was completely idiotic and I will tell you why. Alabama had never trailed in a game all year. Now, knowing that, wouldn’t you want to get the ball first and go down and try to score?? You immediately put them in a situation where they have not been. You have the crowd in a frenzy with the blackout. But NO, Richt defers, allows Alabama to score first and takes the crowd right out of the game.

I’m telling you, that game may have turned out differently had Richt done his homework.

I like Richt and I think he’s a good coach. But I’m beginning to question his ability in big games. He cannot get the team ready, he makes huge tactical blunders, and I’m not sure he’s got the ability to take us to the top. We have as much talent as Alabama and Florida. We should not be getting blown out in these type of games. I’m worried about Richt.

The play of the game wasn’t friggin’ Brandon Spikes….gimme a break. Maybe for you personally, Bill.

If you have to break it down to one play, it would probably be the INT that was negated by the DE personal foul. The whole game changes at that point.

As a former letterman, mgr. on the team, early 80’s and raised in J’ville, FL here’s my opinon on the debacle this past weekend.

1) why do alot of GA fans think the defense has failed us over the yrs. under WM. The score was 14-3 midway thru the 3rd qtr., the defense was playing their ——- off! Just look at the Ga/UF game since MR took over and tell me defense was a problem. 13 stinking pts. back to back against Ron Zuke, enough said.

2) K. Moreno pulling himself out on ocassion is not enough reason to blame a loss. Did I not see him pull himself out on the road the week before at LSU, that outcome was pretty satisfactory.

3)the disturbing thing for me this past weekend was Matt Stafford quiting, yes , pulled himself and was on the end of the bench the last 5 of the game. Even the ill advised pass that made it 21-3, at that pt. the game is not over with. Stafford has never been a “poised QB” consistenly at UGA to date. That’s not Stafford’s fault, that’s MR and Bobo’s responsibility. Count up Stafford’s picks in total during his career. I don’t give a crap if Tripp Chandler was supposed to stop or not, the play called was going to result in a wide open tight end or not, no different then Tebow’s jump pass to the tight end. The Gators were fooled, the guy was wide ——open, Stafford lost his poised and gunned the ball in the ground, he could’ve thrown it so high to cause it to rain and Chanlder would’ve had time to get under it.

4) for all the great that MR represents, he has a track record of collapses at UGA that are always abrupt and crazy and make you scratch your head. 3 mystery looses to Tenn. 14-9, the 51 tthey put up b.c of the Joe T. experiment, last yrs. blowout, Vandy at home…..

5) I read a blogger who said MR has no streak in him that I hate to say Steve Spurrier, Urban Myer and NIck Saban has and that is the players know they can sit if necessary at any point and who’s in charge in a unique way. ONe guy put it MR has no “a*****” personality at all. Not advocating this by no means, but something is missing that puts him on the 2nd tier level in the SEC at the moment, that results in the meltdown that we saw of GA football this past weekend. Absolutely brutal to watch a team not have poise and quit in the football game. Thought I would never say GA quit in the Florida game, but I’ve seen it now with my own eyes.

I’ll give MR a rain check, I just think he’s running out of time to just simply with the SEC east for starters straight up, going 5-0. I don’t feel confident in MR and Bobo at the moment to ever get it to that point and the last time I checked the State of Ga and high school football, it shouldn’t be impossible.

Florida played a very good game but this game was lost by Georgia mistakes and the refs. Questionable offensive calls in key situations, defensive blunders, (two of florida touchdowns there was not a defensive player in sight) interceptions, fumbles, penelties, missed field goals, dropped passes, and I could go on and on. Yes Florida did cause a few of theses mistakes but a most of them was due to poor execution and lack of concentration. I really think without us making these mistakes Georgia wins the game.

Great post Bill, and a good observation about Spikes pinning Knowshon. While I don’t ever think a moment like that should set the tone for a game, the truth is, when met with inaction or timidity on our part, the Dawgs let it set the tone. Where was an O-lineman to yank that punk off of Knowshon and send the message that we weren’t going to be intimidated? It’s almost like they went into the game with a guilt complex, and Coach Richt, God love him, hasn’t helped. He apologized profusely for the celebration scheme last year, and I wish starting with SEC Media Days he had just said, “You know what, I’ve already apologized, and I’m not going to say anything more about it.” Plays can set the tone for a game. A perfect example was at Auburn two years ago when Auburn’s first play from scrimmage resulted in a sack and that led to a quick three-and-out. But crap like Spikes pulled, yeah he made the play but the rest was just trying to intimidate. The Dawgs need to answer that s**t and not just sit there and take it like the humbled, dispirited pups they played like. I’m a Christian too, but as my old science teacher in high school Cmdr. Frahler said, when he played hockey he had to be an Old Testament Christian. Same is true for football- and eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth.
And one more thing, a caller on Richt’s call-in show (and please people, you’re not helping matters by criticizing CMR for the celebration penalty over and over and over- let it go, the man’s apologized enough) said he wanted more civility in our rivalry with Florida. How sweet! The rest of us want some wins dammit! I guarandamntee you Urban Crier isn’t interested in civility if it will cost his team a win in a “rivalry game”. This team has had too much damn talent and depth the last seven years to be a paltry 2-6 against them, and especially to be losing by 39!

Football games often come down to one play - this year’s game though came down to us shooting ourselves and the fact that the striped shirts shut their eyes on way too many plays. The old adage “cheaters never win” just isn’t true!

I thought the play that changed the game for the Dawgs was the first drive we had in the redzone and we call a QB keeper around left end WITHOUT a lead bloker. Not a very good play even if Stafford had a lead bloker, That series pretty much took us out of the game. Bobo’s play calling is too predictable, easy to call plays when your winning much harder when losing. Gators were well schooled on our plays and they took advantage of it. A very well prepared football team. Ours simply was not.

You people amaze me! You loose to two teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation and you bad mouth them! I’m sure Moreno has been hit as hard as the 51 linebacker hit him and got up, I am not dead sure he would have if the USC middlebacker had hit him with that running start! The Dawgs are a damn good team! Get behind them instead of bad mouthing them!!! GO DAWGS!!!!

I think Bobo is doing a pretty good job for his experience level and is growing into an outstanding off. coord. The same people complaining about him now will be moaning and crying when he takes a head coaching job sometime in the future.

But Martinez? Sorry, it’s just not working out. His defense is getting progressively worse and sometimes just doesn’t show up for a half, if not most of a game. The defense seems incapable of positive aggression - sacks, qb pressures, tackles for loss, big hits in the secondary, etc., but has become real good at negative aggression - late hits, pass interference, face mask / hands to the face, offsides, etc. They are also experts at being completely and hopelessly out of position.

Now Kentucky, which generated 5 points against Florida, is on track for a 400 yard game and maybe even an upset. This despite the fact that our offensive has been real productive. It’s time to make a switch at defensive coordinator. I don’t know how it could be any more obvious.

As TV announcer say “Ktucky is one of the worse third down play but today they are good!”. CMR ” we showed some gussy play today, we will be OK”. Don’t worry Willow CMR will find some thing good about yous schemings. Suddenly Auburn will show us how explosive they are. Auburn average 16 points per game, but they will hang 38 on Willy D (the preseason #1 if we forgot). Get ready Stafford, we need your help. This is new to me to see everybody gangup on us. Seriously, Willy, get your a$$ out of Athens will you!. Show some class, don’t screw up UGA reputation please.

You people are just delusional. The Dawgs did in fact play an inspired game against the Gators last year, and still, with Teebow playing hurt, the Gators were still within one score with about three-and-a-half minutes to go in the game.

Stop fretting and learn to live with the fact that the Gators simply have too much recruiting, too much speed, superior coaching, and so on.

You wanna call him Urban Crier? That’s fine.

Im so sick of the excuses the DAWGS make…face it, you don’t belong in the TOP 5! You whine about injuries…I guess other TOP teams don’t have injuries….

Quit whining! You aren’t that good which is a great thing to see!!!

Hard choices seperate the good from the great. Now is the time for CWR. If UGA is going to stay a top program Willie must go. Come to think about it,our special teams are really not very special. i think we need a change there as well. Just ask Phil Fulmer. If you are not getting better you are getting worse. There is no such thing as holding steady.

Are we ready? So bow our heads and look, FU will be in the title game every year as long as we don’t let Willy go. What did I say, CMR will say we play good D for thew (UK) game. Willy can keep your job. Face it, CMR will never get rid of his former UM roommate, he is happy with a good record we have. So be ready to be a second class team of SEC East every year. A lots of us happy with the record we’v got too. Not me, I wan’t a little more. If I ask too much, I am sorry. Hard for me to see CUM smirked and called timeouts for more smacked down on my Dawgs.
