Half empty or half full?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I understand why a lot of UGA fans are calling the Dawgs’ victory over the Vols Saturday an “ugly” or “unsatisfying” win.
Georgia had an opportunity to run up a big score against an SEC opponent in a blowout, and didn’t.
The Dawgs moved the ball up and down the field against Tennessee but sputtered in the red zone, leaving enough points on the field to have more than doubled Georgia’s score, thanks to a dropped pass in the end zone, two red-zone interceptions (one in the end zone and both leading to UT scores), and three other badly botched fade routes. And while at least two of Georgia’s 11 penalties Saturday were strategic calls by the coaches, the Dawgs again kept a drive alive for their opponent with an infraction. (Of course, on one Bulldog drive there also was the matter of Georgia’s least favorite SEC officiating crew blowing a defensive holding call in the end zone that should have given the Dawgs an automatic first down at the 3.)
Granted, barring the defense pitching a shutout, Georgia can’t do things like that against Florida or LSU and expect to win. And despite the Red and Black’s total domination of the game, a 26-14 score doesn’t have the style points that today’s pollsters reward. The old-school days when all that mattered was that it was a win have fallen to the ESPN-ization of college football.
No, it wasn’t the kind of victory that had many Georgia fans buying those instantly printed scorecards after the game. But while I’ve been accused from time to time of harping on what the Dawgs need to improve, I left Sanford Stadium Saturday feeling like the souvenir cup was half full, rather than half empty.
I mean, look at the other side of the coin: The Vols came into the game ranking first in the SEC in total defense, allowing 244 yards a game, but Georgia racked up 458 yards of offense, with Matthew Stafford throwing his first 300-plus yard game despite those two picks and Knowshon Moreno topping a hundred yards rushing. The Dawgs had 29 first downs to Tennessee’s 10 and an amazing 42 minutes of possession time. On defense, Georgia held the admittedly anemic Vols to 1 yard on the ground and 208 yards in the air, the bulk of that on a couple of long completions.
And then there was The Drive: Looking to eat up clock and secure the win in the fourth quarter after letting Tennessee get its second score when the secondary left the receiver uncovered, Georgia ground out 76 yards on 17 plays, holding the ball just short of 11 minutes. Dooleyball had returned to Sanford! And that was despite losing another key offensive lineman to injury earlier in the game. It may have only produced another of Blair Walsh’s four field goals, but it iced the game and was the kind of drive that wins championships.
So, yes, Georgia has a lot it still needs to work on to fine-tune its performance. But those are all things that can be fixed.
THIS AND THAT: How about a game ball for freshman kicker Blair Walsh, who not only responded in pressure situations Saturday, but did so after suffering a migraine headache and having to go on an IV earlier in the day. … It was great to see Brannan Southerland back in the game and punching in another short-yardage score, but Shaun “I Can Play Fullback, Too” Chapas came up large, particularly with his running after the catch on a couple of long pass plays. With the current weakness at tight end, it’s good to see Stafford dumping the ball off to the fullbacks and getting big results. … A.J. Green at times looked unfortunately like the freshman he is Saturday, but senior receiver Mohamed Massaquoi was magnificent, even after he got his bell rung on an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit. And Demiko Goodman had a couple of really nice snags, too. … Let’s hope Willie Martinez makes this point with his secondary: When you get your hands on the ball, catch it. If you can’t, knock it to the ground, don’t tip it up in the air where the receiver gets a second shot at it, which nearly happened a couple of times Saturday. … The fade definitely isn’t working for Georgia right now. Saturday, the receivers didn’t seem to understand that Stafford intended to put the ball in the far corner of the end zone. … While Georgia’s offensive line responded well when challenged by Stafford to step up on that fourth-quarter drive (particularly Clint Boling, who took Vince Vance’s place), the injuries and constant flux in positions continued to make the Dawgs’ blocking and protection spotty, with Tennessee defenders harassing Stafford and Moreno in the backfield on way too many plays. Whether the young line matures and gels fast (and avoids any further injuries) is going to play in big part in how the Dawgs’ season finishes. … On that screen-play interception, you could clearly see that the Vols defense had read the play before Stafford even threw the ball. … Georgia’s kickoffs, aided by a bit of breeze at times, were the best they’ve been this season. … Moreno has obviously become the team’s spirit leader, racing around congratulating and revving up his teammates even on plays that don’t involve him. … There was nearly a real dog fight before the game when UT’s hound Smokey and Uga VII got within a few yards of each other. Smokey started yapping and straining at his leash. Uga tensed into what looked almost like a defensive lineman’s position and then lunged toward Smokey before their respective handlers decided to head in opposite directions.

Half empty or half full still equates to “not satisfied.”
After the first half whipping Bama laid on UGA coupled with the week off and the fact that Tenn beat UGA pretty handily the past two seasons, fans were wanting a “statement game.”
The fans got half of one.
UGA owned every statistical category in this game. But in the fourth quarter, Tenn still was hanging around and really was not out of it until that final, long drive. The fact that UGA seemed to be able to drive the ball at will and then get stymied in the red zone make us fans uneasy.
BTW, that Tenn player who had Moreno on the ground and then took a cheap shot to the ribs should have been ejected, IMHO. College football has no place for that type of crap.

I’ll take this anyday compared to the last two games against UT. I know everyone is looking ahead to Nov 1 and the Gaytors, but there is a lot of work to do between now and then. I liked the way we started the game and went about our business in,well, a business type attitude. The next five games are crucial and brutal. CMR will build the team to the right emotional peak for fla.
Let’s enjoy this win and get ready for Vandy. Go Dawgs!!

In two weeks the Gators will have Dustin Doe back at outside linebacker, Jim Tartt back at OG (with a powerful new guard in Johnson now as his backup?), and Emmanuel Moody back at RB to go along with the blazing speedsters of Rainey, Demps, and Harvin. You Dawgs better bring your A plus game to Jax is all I have to say. The Gators are ticked off, they are mean, they are physical, and they are VERY VERY good! The national media knows that. You Dawgs will know that is a few weeks.

I have found that the uga fans are about the most unloyal fans in college football. Why is that? Your 5 and 1 in the SEC, you have a future national championship coach, and all your players are 4 and 5 star atheletes. What else do you want. Heck, the Tenn fans are not down on the vols as bad as you are on the dawgs? What are you going to do when you end up 2 and 4. I guess you will just give up and find another team to cheer for. Unfaithful, unfaithful, unfaithful.

LSU is not that good. They were killed by Florida and they gave up 24 to MSU which is the most pitiful team this side of Gardner-Webb, oops Gardner-Webb would have shut MSU out. We should role over Vandy, Auburn, LSU, but Florida is real good.

Phillip, contrary to what you might read in the AJC or on these blogs, Georgia is 5-3 against Tennessee since Richt arrived. Donnan’s last UGA team beat TN in 2000, so that’s 6 out of the last 9. Fact is, beating Tennessee has hardly been a rare or novel occurrence for Georgia this decade, even with the back-to-back losses in ‘06 and ‘07.

Ed, Stats are for losers it’s only a kicking if you can be up by 31 and put your scrubs in. Ed, always remember stats are like telling someone who just had a loved one drown in a lake that the average depth was only 6 inches. Tennessee was in the game for 85% of it which really stunk!

Time to start up the Phans of Phat Phil. Maybe the Dawgs can save his job even after kicking, can you say Blair Walsh, the stuffing out of him. Keep Phil, and reward Clawsen with a contract extension.
Look’s like Bama fans got screwed by a Longhorn. Now you know how we feel. The SEC is somehow the Rodney Dangerfield conference.
Vandy found out they are not invincible. Of course that could make them more dangerous this coming weekend. Who scheduled such a tough opponnet for Homecoming. Oh yeah, it’s Vandy, who knew?
After watching the first half of UF vs LSU, I fell asleep. Not near as concerned about that trip to Red Stick arena in two weeks.
Okay concentrate, I know it’s Vandy, but this is not the same Vandy of this old man’s era as UF is not the same as it was in my era. Concentrate and find some Offensive linemen.
GO DAWGS!!

I feel like we are getting into the same red-zone rut we had earlier in this decade when we wore out poor Billy Bennet’s leg. Other than the two drives immediately after the turnovers, Martinez had a pretty good game plan. Bobo also called a good game. In addition to using the FB more we need to develop an effective tight end threat. First downs will be harder to come by against FL and LSU; we must have intermediate threats that take linebackers out of the blitz package. Caleb King is a ggod back and should be used more in certain situations. Let the Big Dawg Eat

The O-line injuries will be even more telling against LSU & Fla.
Even of more concern is the lack of a defensive rush until the end when passing by UT was a given. Yeah, they stopped the run stone cold but I would have to lay the blame for the long passes on the fact that a young quarterback was given time to wait for the play to develop while staying relatively unpressured.

In terms of the AP poll, it is confounding to me why the Dawgs get no respect vs some of the other teams in the top 10. Why does FL jump so high to #5, especially in light of their recent loss to Ole Miss (I know the LSU win was impressive but really, LSU looked pitiful). Also why does the national media remain obsessed with USC? It is confounding to me why they are ranked 6th, especially in light of their loss to an unranked Oregon State. The Dawgs did lose one game but it was to the 2nd ranked and arguably the best team in the league. And who has Brigham Young played/will they play that is tough?!? Since the national media all agrees that the SEC is the toughest conference without question, why is there no real credit given to these SEC teams on a relative basis to the others in the BCS race? Kinda makes sense to me. Nuff said….

The glass is certainly half full Bill. We saw a team that was crushed by Bama then hung 26 points on the best Defense in The SEC despite all of our execution and coaching call problems.
I’d really like to see The Dawgs play a strong, basic, well coached and executed game against Vandy. Cut the penalties in half and have a solid win - we don’t need a blowout against Vandy (I don’t think that’s going to happen anyway - Vandy is for real this year). If we can play 4 quarters of serious, controlled ball against Vandy it would go a long way in building confidence for the next two games - LSU & UF.

Teams are ranked according to the strength of one win…see Bama against UGA. They are ranked according to their history and tradition…see USC, Okla, and bama. They are ranked by regional biases and media bias. They are ranked according to the stories that the voters want to see. In short, rankings are nothing but a beauty contest. They make no sense because they are based on the changing whims of voters.

31-0 at the half!!!
Congrats dog nation on the victory - A win is a win - but the dogs showed again that this is not a great team by any strectch of the imagination.
If UGA was a great team - they would have put 50 points up on the board. UGA did a lot good in this game - but is just not a great team.
Too bad the talents of Stafford are wasted at a school that did not get it’s act together on an OL while he was there - what a waste of talent.
Stafford should have gone to a premier football school (USC, OK, TX, OH State, Florida, LSU, or even Bama)
In fact - UGA is like a sports car that runs on REGULAR gas.
Look great - but really nothing special under the hood.
The only team more overated than UGA this year has been Auburn.
In my past posts - I predicted the UGA would lose 4 more games - I am now going to adjust that as I think UGA will do the following:
UGA future wins: Vandy, KY, Auburn
UGA future losses: LSU, Gators, GT
UGA will finish the season 8-4. I also predict that UGA will play Wisconsin in the OutBack Bowl or BC/FSU in the Peach Bowl.

TampaGator, please learn how to type. “You Dawgs will know that is a few weeks” Did you perhaps mean ‘in a few weeks’, Croc Boy? Yeah, I know your mama didn’t make you do your English homework since she was “working” the trailer park down there in hurricane alley. She left you alone to do your homework (not smart, sort of like all gayturd fans) thinking that you might just complete it. Well, maybe you opened a book and actually tried but in walked your drunk uncle who made you close your book. Then he had his way with you on that musty trailer mattress in the back of that sordid trailer in Dixie County, Flawrdee didn’t he? Oh, yes - he did. Does your azz still smart from that, TampaGayturd? No, probably not. You liked it!! Do you need your drunk uncle just like Timmy Boy (NCAA crier of the decade) needs his mommy? The secondary needs to shore up fast or it will be a broken glass, as right now they are pitiful against a good passing team. And take those gloves off of the recievers. You don’t need to look fancy out there, …oops I forgot, you have to flash that Nike logo … it’s in the contract. I’ve never seen so much crap hanging off of players today; sweatbands below the kneecaps and above the elbows, mouthpieces that are color coordinated with the team logo as well as the paste on eye black with the team logo. It’s like the players are all going to a cartton show with that crap on. Play football and knock a snot bubble out of someone for petes sake.

BAMASTAN,
Most of what you comment is true but your team’s uninspiring win against KY by 3 points should have dropped you in the polls last week but a few spots. It also made most viewers of the game feel that The Dawgs had more of a bad outing against Bama than Bama had such a dominating team (please don’t tell me Saban gave us 30 points in the second half to make us feel better)
The spotlight is on Bama now - and not The Dawgs. If we can do enough to get to Atlanta for The SECC Game then we’ll get a second shot at your boys.
For the record, I’ve been the lone writer on this site for six months telling readers that Bama would be the surprise team of The SEC this season. I’m glad to see The Tide come back from so many pathetic years and coaches.
Good Luck & Hope To See Your Boys In Atlanta!

The DAWGS are still a mediocre football team, we need to run Moreno until someone stops him, stop throwing that stupid fade route and keep Stafford from running the ball, it is not fooling anyone, poor execution was everywhere Saturday, if we make those types of mistakes against any other SEC team we get beat. It is time to play smash mouth until they stop Knowshon and then look downfield. The defense is another issue……

Is anyone upset about our behavior this year? Richt brings outstanding moral character to the team, and yet he keeps recruiting kids that are getting arrested off the field and flagged for personal fouls on it. Georgia leads the nation in off the field arrests and personal foul penalties. We’ve become the new Miami. It’s great to win, but somehow there is a bad taste in our mouths because we are seemingly playing with thugs.

The UT player punching Moreno was uncalled for….HOWEVER what was only briefly shown on replay was Moreno giving cheap shots of his own PRIOR to the punch in the ribs. To the UT players/team credit they said they were baited into some of that by the Dawgs. They said they should not have responded that way.Go figure.I remember last years game seeing Moreno give UT players some shots long after the game was decided. He got some play time then and pretty much wrested the job and is a very solid back. That being said, I think if he is on your team, you probably like him and his energy. For the other side you probably view him as what he appears to be….a thug.

CMR, needs to get another defense coordinator, WE Will NEVER Make it to the NCG, with those two play calls, and fans admit it, we will not make it to the NCG unless we buy tickets cause our team won’t make it..As always they underachieve (period). Enough is A F!@# enough. Man up and play like georgia dawgs should. or we shall always be, the outside looking in. Next we’ll loose all those great recruits.

note to Bamastan:
By using your trailer park trash logic, the great and powerful Tide must not be a GREAT team, because they couldn’t even put up 50 points on the pitiful, overrated Dawgs. Buck Fama and STFU!!!!!

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Georgia is only 5-1, and only ranked tenth in the nation! We can’t beat Florida, even though Ole Miss could. We can’t beat LSU, even though they just laid an egg at Florida, who lost to Ole Miss. We can’t beat Georgia Tech, who showed true grit in outlasting Gardner- Webb (don’t laugh - their colors are black and red, and they had the word “Dogs” printed on their jerseys, so Tech could have given up before the opening kickoff. They didn’t, so beware).
We’ll probably lose the rest of our games! We’ll be lucky to go to some bowl sponsored by a dotcom startup or a company that makes weedeaters! Georgia football as we know it may be gone forever!
Fire Bobo! 458 yards against a tough SEC defense doesn’t mean much when you only win by 12 points! Sure, Georgia leads the SEC in total offense and is 2nd in passing efficiency, but hey, too many field goals in the red zone. And what’s with the fades? Just because it worked in practice doesn’t mean it will work against Tenn. cornerbacks!
Fire Martinez! Sure, he held South Carolina and Tennessee - the two teams that beat us last year - to a combined 21 points, but it should have been much less than that! Sure, Georgia is 15th in the country in total defense and third in the nation and 2nd in the SEC in rushing defense, but what does he know? VanGorder would be 1st in ALL of those categories (at least as long as he sticks around).
Fire the special teams coach and the receivers coach! Fire Searels - if he was coaching them right, we wouldn’t have so many injured lineman. Heck, fire Richt - his 80% record don’t amount to nothing now that we’ve had one horrible half against Bama and didn’t beat ASU and Tenn. by big enough margins! Shelve the black jerseys forever. Tear down Sanford Stadium and rebuild from scratch. I’d say fire Munson, but he just retired! So fire his replacement!
The sky is falling! Aaaagghhhh…

I don’t see anything in here from the Dawgs about that little Richt-inspired endzone display in Jax last year and how it’s going to happen again. Even Fratboy missed it. Perhaps they have forgotten. If so they are the only ones. This is a really good chance for them to save money on gas. Don’t watch, pups, this is going to really really hurt.

BamaStan has a point. How great are you when you lose to a team that got beat by La.-Monroe the year before?

Man, it sure is funny how quickly people forget that uf got beat at home by Ole Miss. Everyone’s jumping on the bandwagon of a team that was defeated by an awful, unranked team two weeks ago. UGA will handle uf again and shut you guys up for the remainder of the season. Can’t wait!

How can a head coach at a major institution not know that they were supposed to get a first down? Better yet, why didn’t at least one of his assistants know the rule? But in retrospect I guess I understand. Why should they know, they practically know nothing about offense or defense so why should they know anything about the rule book, that would entail reading it.

Bulldogs going to Jacksonville——the plan for Excessive Celebration ‘08 is for every fan wearing red to wave a yellow flag, towel anything yellow during the game to remind the Gators of last years game-changing play! Go Dawgs! Let’s watch Urban Meyer lose it again!

We could solve all the slipping in the poles by not waitning till second half to adjust the defense and actually trying to score in the last five minutes of the ball game. We should and could have scored atleast three more touchdowns against Tenn. and chose not to. So, who do we blame if we win the SEC and still get shafted out of the BCS Championship? Just a thought.

From Stewart Mandel’s football blog on SI.com.
Georgia’s preseason No. 1 ranking placed a gigantic chip on its fans’ shoulders. I get far more incredulous e-mails from Dawgs fans than anyone else. News flash, guys: You haven’t beaten anybody yet. You got crushed by the one good team you played. Beat Vanderbilt, LSU and Florida, and I’m sure your team will be properly rewarded.
