We’re not dead yet

No, this wasn’t a funeral.

Just as surely as the bandwagon hoppers jumped aboard after the Dawgs’ strong finish in 2007 and again after the impressive win out in Arizona, they’re jumping off now with predictably snarky cracks about Mark Richt’s Blackout and how the loss to Alabama sounds the death knell of Georgia’s national championship hopes.

Not so fast my friend, as a recent visitor to Athens likes to say.

The Dawgs now join the ranks of the once-beaten, a group that includes Southern Cal, Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Auburn and Kansas among others, and which is sure to grow as the season progresses. Are all these teams out of contention? Hardly, even if we don’t end up with as crazy a BCS scenario as last season, where even two losses weren’t a dealbreaker.

That doesn’t mean Georgia is sitting pretty at this point. The glaring problems (penalties caused by lack of focus, the offensive line, lack of a pass rush) that had been apparent in the previous four games finally proved insurmountable when the team was faced with the schedule’s first top-notch opponent. Georgia didn’t look too well prepared, either, and the coaching staff appeared slow to react and disorganized at times. (More on that later in the week.)

But the Dawgs didn’t quit Saturday night, even though the odds were stacked against them overcoming a 31-point deficit. They still have more talent across the board at skill positions than just about any other team. Linemen can mature. Defensive schemes can be reworked to improve the pass rush or someone may break out of the pack like Marcus Howard did late last year. And the Dawgs still control their own destiny in the SEC East, though the challenges ahead are daunting.

One thing you can take to the bank: Another strong finish like the end of 2006 and the latter half of last year, and those bandwagon hoppers will be scrambling to climb back aboard, throwing superlatives around like championship confetti.

And at that time those of us who were along for the entire ride should tell them to kiss Uga VII’s stubby tail.

We did not quit and well played with all we had till the final second. There is pride in that. Now we need to pick up that chip and place it own our shoulder. Let our anger out on the field, and when we take care of business in the east we will see them again if they take care of the west, we will have the opportunity to unleash the pent up rage that filled us last night. GO DAWGS!!!!

Regardless of what happens from this point on I am a Dawg and will always be a Dawg. Glad I didn’t give USC fans any grief or I would have had to move out of Cali. No one expected us to go undefeated anyway so as always in the BCS if you’re gonna lose the earlier the better. We still will face 5 ranked teams and if we regroup and handle our business we will be fine. Trust me. I would love to see bama in the SECCG. This might have been the best thing to happen to us condidering we have a bye week and we can fix our problems. It’s not over. As a classy UGA fan i can say Congrats to Alabama. Weary is the head that wears the crown.

Congrats to BAMA on a well deserved victory. Also thanks for showing UGA what it takes to win in the SEC - that is, you need the meat boys on the offensive line. Without them, you can have all the talent in the world at RB and QB, but it doesn’t matter if you’re getting stuffed every play.

Oftentimes, even games such as this hinge on one or two plays. For me, the turning point was the roughing the passer penalty on BAMA’s first possession, which nullified a fumble recovery and gave BAMA the ball back deep in GA territory. Give BAMA credit, they took advantage of the situation, went on to score, and never looked back.

Now, can we dispense with the black jerseys. I didn’t like it last year and it makes you look silly as hell when you make a big deal of them and then get your butt kicked.

when are u guys going to start writting about what is really wrong with this team?

for 4 years i’ve been saying that mark richt is the worse game manager i have ever seen.

here’s an example. he runs the ball right up the middle into bama’s strenght. that is just plain stupid!

mark richt does not know what the word strategy means apparently. moreno is the best playmaker rb in college but clueless mark richt doesn’t know that yet.

instead of running moreno north and south, clueless mark richt should have ran moreno east and west. that strategy would have created big problems for the tides.

terrence cordy is 6’5 365lbs. if a big man that size have to defend east and west, he will eventually ware down because you’re making him move out of that little space.

i can’t understand y clueless mark richt doesn’t give moreno 25 to 30 carries a game. don’t the guy understand that moreno is a natural born playmaker?

sooner or later he will hit a home run. the guy got more energy than javon ringer of michigan state but their coach gives him 40 + carries in games.

i said last week that if moreno doesn’t get 25 to 30 carries the rest of the way, we will loss 3 games. well, this is the 1st lost when moreno had under 25 carries.

You are correct in that we are far from dead. Look at last year’s finish. We do have to get this penalty thing fixed soon though! Interesting that we get beat by the now no.2 team and drop to no.11 and USC only drops to no.9 after getting beat by a team that is not even ranked! Let’s just see who’s still standing in the SEC in December. The season has really just begun.

Tony, and Eric.

Like Bill said. The bandwagoners are chirping. There are people on a waiting list for tickets. Either support the team, coaches win or lose, let them coach and play or give up your seats. There are people trying to get seats, so if you are that upset, let someone knew watch it, and you can save yourself the money, time, trouble, heartache and breath.

They are talented enough to get the scholarship, and the coaches are paid to coach for a reason, and we arent.

Good article Bill, I’d rather beat bama the 2nd game around than this one if i had the choice. Go dawgs.

Of course, you’re not out of it… yet. It’s still September. But the fact remains, the national stage was set to observe and decide if your incessant claims of superiority were valid. You argued for respect and publicity. The powers that be set the perfect stage for you to prove your bite was as big as your bark. Then, as fate would have it (USC losing), you were primed to make a huge national statement and move to the top. It’ll take a lot to convince voters from now on, after that monumental flop. Face reality. You just blew the biggest opportunity UGA has had in decades. To come out unprepared for this falls squarely on Coach Mark Richt. He just got schooled by Saban. Gimmickry is no substitute for good old fashioned physical football. I think you guys did set a new world record though…. Sanford Stadium became the largest morgue of all time !

You are not dead, but you have to rely on other teams losing, and in some cases twice.

Plus, if OU loses a game against say Mizz, by 3 or something, people will still probably have them over UGA.

A loss doesn’t hurt that much, but a beat down, different story.

But right now you shouldn’t be worrying about stuff like that, you should be worrying about fixing what is wrong with your team.

You give credit to Alabama. They played pretty damn good. You hopefully learn from your mistakes like the persoanl foul that cost a fumble recovery and probably a big differnce in the first quarter and you go on. I think it will make UGA stronger. They have been hit in the face now. I don’t think anybody they play the rest of the year is going to hit any harder than that. Hopefully the O line and D line will get better as the season goes.

Alabama and LSU are the only really good teams in the SEC. UGA will lose 1 and possibly the last one against GT. GT can run the ball as good or better that Alabama. I don’t see Alabama losing another game. Forget it Dogs you National title hopes are over you need to just focus on being over .500 by the end of the year.

That’s the spirit, Tony. You are a real team player. I’m a little grumpy this dayafter a “funeral”, too. Were you at the game? Undertaker, you are absolutely correct! We flopped on center stage. It hurts, no question. Congratulations, y’all beat us, period. Just like your classy chant goes, “you just beat the hell out of us” Don’t get too cocky though, and maybe we’ll see if you can go 3-0 this year in Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. Hopefully, against some much improved Bulldogs.

The commentary is overwhelming…the Monday morning QBs on a Sunday are astounding!! Alabama had a damn good game plan, good personnel, and executed it well…result: success! Georgia, conversely, had good personnel, a makeshift game plan, and no execution..result: loss! It happens..NFL, NCAA, war, soccer, baseball..whatever. Now if we’re the team I think we are and the coaching staff is as good as I know they are, we’ll rebound..we’ll learn..will we learn? I hope so. For the moment: Alabama came to play and beat us badly for a half…the referees were competent, the calls were correct. Georgia coaching and game flexibility leaves a lot to be desired..AT THIS TIME AND IN THAT GAME..not a permanent condition. Now you bloggers, unfortunately, seem to have a nasty dose of blabber mouth, uncouthness, and bandwagonism…grow up, get off the net, and read a good book instead of trying to coach a game you really don’t understand to start with. Georgia will rebound..and you Tech fanatics should wait to late November to even think about the game! GO DAWGS!!!!

Sir, go back to editing comic strips and leave the football analysis to sports writers. No real UGA fan wants to read homerish, amateur coverage like this. It’s an awful day, a disgusting loss. To try to put a happy spin on this flies in the face of real journalism and shows you know so very little about football.

Without calling players names; I think the same couple of DB on the Dog defense get called for pass interference week after week. That was week 5. Bama had 2 fouls for 9 yards and GA had 10 for over 100 yards. I don’t see any improvement at all. GA can’t kick the ball into the endzone and the team gets to start the drives at the 40 yard line or better. That sucks.

As long as Coach wee willey M. plays zone defense we will continue to lose. We are the junkyard dawgs, not the passive chickens. We have a fast secondary. There is no reason to play scaried! Zone defense has your best men just standing around and waiting. (“I wonder if he’s going to run enter my zone, I just don’t know.”). Saban had to love it.

This is the same Alabama that got their a* handed to them last year by a D 1A team. This is the same Bama team the went in the tank the 2nd half of the season. This is the same Nick Saben that is 2 and 2 against Mark Richt. Be careful before you run your mouth too much. Alabama and Nick Saben’s teams fade as the year goes on and Mark Richt teams have historically gotten better. With that said, I still say FIRE WILLIE MARTINEZ.

Georgia’s problems 1) *Too Many Damn Penalites- some folks asses need to run sprints till their lungs blow out.Week after Week same BS. 2) Defensive coaching sucked. CB’s giving 10 yard cushions. BAMA challenged their manhood. Response….play a soft zone. 3) play calling on offense. What the f^k was that QB sweep play. Take that out of the book right now. If the running back cannot get 5 how the hell is your QB suppose to sweep and get a first down? That was BS. 4)Richt you better get some damn emotion in you.And start leading this team.

I hope some things change. If they do…we might get a chance to redeem ourselves against Bama in the SEC championship. Continue to play as we have and we will lose to LSU, Vandy,Fla…god even the north aven….no wait things are not that bad….yet!!!But it is time to work on the F ups and get the ship right.

i was at the game last night and initially i thought bama just whipped us up a good ol fashioned @$$ whoopin. but after going back and watching it again, i can honestly say that wasnt the case. sure we were down 31-0 at halftime and at first glance, that looks horrible. but upon further examination of bama’s first few drives, penalties killed us and gave bama all the momentum. everybody knows momentum is key in football, and that held true last night. you take away the roughing the passer penaty on bama’s first drive, and we got the ball 1st and 10 with the score still 0-0 and who knows what would have happened then. then on the second drive, if we dont get a dumb defensive holding call when bama is at midfield with 3rd and long, we get the ball back again with still no score from bama. then later that same drive, we get yet another roughing the passer penalty. next drive, aj green, in a freakish play, somehow flips the dam ball to bama’s defense on our side of the 50! result: yet another bama TD off a silly mistake by UGA. we spoonfed bama that whole first half. i give credit to bama for taking advantage of our mistakes, but thats just what they were doing… taking advantage of our many many mistakes. yall saw what happened when we limited those mistakes/penalties and hunkered down and played football in the second half… we pretty much dominated scoring 30 pts to bama’s 10. i still have plenty of faith in the dawgs. they have what it takes to go far, they just have to iron out those these sillty mistakes and costly penalties. hopefully we’ll get another shot at bama in the SECCG which im almost positive bama will be there. i dont see anybody competing with them out of the west.

Love Coach Richt, BUT: The dawgs repeatedly coming out flat for games and the coaches not being able to make proper adjustments is a lack of coaching, discipline and game preparation. To put it lightly We were out coached. Our offense threw the ball into triple coverage many times, whereas Alabama receivers were open. Coach Richt when will you hold your assistants accountable like you do the players. Players are benched when they under perform. We will never get to the elite level with Willie as our defensive coordinator. The defense was consistently in wrong sets. Please, stop being stubborn, and fire Willie. This is just a part of your job. Booboo has a long way to go. He never has a good feel for the game and tries his best to get Stafford killed. When will we learn to run a slant pattern. Players of the game were Rennie Curran and Ben Jones.

Those who frequent these blogs know…I have an agenda. I want a playoff in college football. I’m not just a homer crying about UGA not getting a shot at the NC. I don’t respect the NC…it is just a beauty contest. I am objective enough to see what is happening with the polls and today, we have another example of bias.

Note that Alabama beat UGA and they vault from 8 to 2. They pass LSU who was ranked higher. They moved up over Texas and Mizzou. Why? They have played only one good team who had a bad game. That shouldn’t let them vault to 2. Alabama’s rise from unranked to number 2 in five games is unprecedented. The only decent team they’ve played is UGA. Bama’s rise is based on Saban and the Bear and the bama fanbase…not a legit measure of performance. It’s hard to compare Bama and USC LA because they don’t play common opponents or each other. So it is mostly impressions and guess work on the part of poll voters. It is a beauty contest.

LSU has a legitimate beef. The other teams Alabama passed have a beef. I can understand to a point a conference champion jumping several places in the polls over teams who didn’t play in one. But this is so early in the season and most teams haven’t really played enough good teams to be judged fairly.

This is why polls should not come out until after conference championship games. Poll rankings are a farce. They cheapen college football and make competition secondary to making poll voters happy. We need to change this system.

College Presidents—-give us a playoff.

we are not tough on the line of scrimmage. the injuries of Sturdivant and Owens seem to be taking effect.

penalities and lack of discipline are killing us.

i was apprehensive about this day after i saw Bama play clemson.

look for Bama to get better and for georgia to remain much the same, similar to 2003 with LSU.

we have a national championship caliber head coach, recruting coordinator and talent but average coordinators.

Terrible play calling by Willie and Bobo. Bobo has never been a coordinator and I believe there are 30 or 40 better candidates coaching elswhere.

Rarely do you see a top level team let another program come into their house and destroy them. We have seen this many team with CWM’s defense. He can’t make an adjustment in real time and he has to get to half time to make the needed changes. If we have some of the best players in the country why do you sit back in a conservative defense. To let John Parker Wilson shred you is unacceptable. CMR needs to look for a new defensive coordinator.

If you want to see a physical, disiplined and aggressive team then look at Sabin’s work at Alabama. CMR has always had undisiplined teams and to say you don’t want to take their agresiveness away is an excuse. Alabama played with displine but was agressive and mean. Also, CMR has always had terrible clock management. Last night in the middle of the third quarter we where running the play clock down under 5 seconds to get the play off while still being down by 21. How does he not see that you most likely only have 4 or 5 possessions left and that you need to be in hurry up mode. I think CMR is a great person but he has a long ways to go to become a great coach. Sabin and his coaching staff made the UGA coaches look like they should be coaching in high school.

I’d rather have a coach, with a couple of losses, that represents good character than a coach reffered to as coach satan? Coach Mark Richt is an outstanding coach, he teaches his players to finish strong in which they did. They did not give up. I could care less if we hold a national championship trophy. When it comes down to the end, the Lord doesn’t care how many championships you have.

Go Coach Richt and the Dawgs!

Congradulations to Bama for the win. They took advantage of our mistakes and penalties in the first half and executed the plays to go 31-0. Also, both of their lines were blowing ours off. They played like a top 5 team, different spots in different polls and we did not.

No I am not ready to throw in the towel on the season. The Dawgs on the field did not give up and real Dawg fans won’t either. We got a loss that showed where we need improvement, most notably stupid penalties. We have to eliminate them. We have to get better on our play at the line. We will be playing teams with lines just as good as Bama. We need to prepare for that.

Now we need to focus on doing what it takes to win the SEC East. The world is definately upside down when the leader of the East is Vandy with UGA and UF tied for second and UT 0-2. As Mark Twain said, Of course truth is stranger than fiction, you have to make fiction up.

Go Dawgs, heal up and get ready for UT in two weeks.

In response to “BCS Slave:” You should take it as a compliment for UGA that Bama vaulted to No. 2 after beating you guys. You have an excellent team that had a horrible start last night. I have my own complaints about polls, but if you’re going to say UA shouldn’t be ranked second, what about Oklahoma at No. 1. Who have they played? TCU? Gimme a break. Alabama is now ranked second because two of their games have come on college’s football’s biggest stages, nationally televised games at the GA Dome with Clemson and last night at your place. They dominated both teams and frankly, it was never in doubt after 31-0 with UGA. But you still have a great team, you’re definitely better than Florida, and you’ll make it to the SEC Championship game. And we’ll see you there.

Simply Stated; 76-20, five 10+ win seasons, 3 SEC East Championships, 2 SEC Championships, 3 BCS Bowl Games. Winning games again against the likes of UA, AU, UF, Tenn, LSU, GT.

We will never win them all, as much as I would like it too. Dont beat up on the coaches and players I support who have worked so hard to return GLORY TO OLE’ GEORGIA

This loss will help Richt build a team. They never quit yesterday. The teams goal is to win the SEC East every year, that goal is still under their control.

In Richt’s second season the dogs went 13-1, won the sugar bowl and missed out on the BCS NC Game because there were two undefeated teams remaining at the end of the season.

Again, UGA under Richt 76-20, five 10+ win seasons, 3 SEC East Championships, 2 SEC Championships, 3 BCS Bowl Games. Winning games against the likes of UA, AU, UF, Tenn, LSU, and GT which were nearly noexistent for the 12 season before Richt arrived.

I guess the fans still love ol CMR. I converted to a fan of his after last season’s run from sucking into one of best playing teams in NCAA. Yet CMP does it to me and too many millions of our state’s fans. Coach you make great money, yet every year you and your staff look like a local bunch of high school coaches at the expense of the SEC’s finest “other” coaching staffs. You have been with us for seven years backing your way into more than one SEC champ game appearances, yet we are never the best not in any one of your seasons. Coach, I would have thought by now with your seven years of pretty good SEC footaball you would have the right coordinators and the best players due to UGA’s awesome recruting status every/any year. Yet I feel as though Saban/Les/Urban have outshined and outfoxed you and your teams every season. When we gonna look great and be ready to play the BIG games Coach?? I am married to an Alabama alum and ashamed of the whippin we took in your dumba** black uniforms to a team that went out and got the best a***** coach money can buy!!!!! UGA embarrased the state and better save face the rest of the season. I am very worried how many losses we will bear!?!?!?!?!? SEC champ game talk,,, biggest waste of breath yet with Bobo/Martinez handling CMR’s on the field affairs!!!!!!! We just didn’t loose, we were exposed for all of our future opponents to see there aint much in the core but over hyped players too full of themselves.

If the Dawgs (or more correctly the coaches and recruiting coordinators) learned anything Sat. night, I hope they learned that the key to winning against tough SEC competition is the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!!! It seems that the Dawgs get into this cycle of having a great O-line or D-line once every 3 or 4 years and there is no continuity. They have a great unit until that group graduates and then they have to start over and spend two seasons developing a new unit. That is when injuries can really hamstring a team. Both lines of scrimmage should be the #1 priority in every recruiting class. If teams like Bama and LSU can stockpile players in these positions then I see no reason why Georgia can’t. Also, enough with the black jerseys and other motivational ploys. The only time that these gimmicks push you over the top is when all other areas (coaching, preparation, game-planning etc.) are equal and that was not the case saturday night. All that being said, I still believe that this season is not lost, and even though the Dawgs have taken a big hit, it isn’t a death blow.

Mark Richt spent all week trying to come up with ways to motivate the Dawgs instead of coaching them. What other coach pays attention to and more importantly publicly mentions trivial behavior of that weeks opponent? The stupid blackout was bad enough but then when he dresses in black and says he’s going to a funeral, closes practice then when subject of Javier Arenas comes up he says have you seen his highlights… you know his mind isn’t on coaching. Why is he paying any attention to any trivial junk coming out from other teams players or strength coaches trying to fire up their team? He has no balls and when he tried to be a smart a* at the half with his interview with Holly he just sounded like an idiot. We didn’t even win the East last year and everybody thinks the program is so strong, it’s crazy. These dumbass dogpiles every time we score are idiotic and we just need to be smart and stop getting all the stupid penalties. I’d rather have fat Phil than Richt, he makes me sick.

Frank, I hate to sound like a broken record, but CMR’s record, is that redundt, is pretty good for UGA coaches. The blackout was not his idea, he lets his seniors have a say in uniforms and how is that a bad thing. It fires up the fans. The fans love the blackout. Get the fans in the game, but the players better execute. Unfortunately, the first half mistakes cost us the game. I have no problem with the seniors asking to wear black, our colors are red and black. I love it fires up the fans. Sooner or late it was bound to fail, we saw it last night. But this is football. Shake it off, put on your game face and play the next game like it is your last. We lost, we can use it to motivate and improve as we did last year. I am still on the bandwagon and I am not ready to fire anybody. I have a life. As a grad, I love it when the Dawgs win, I get over it when they lose. Reminds me of my life. And that is all I have to say about that.

By BCS Slave

September 28, 2008 7:40 PM | Link to this

bamagrad,

You assume I am a homer on this issue…I am not. My agenda, clearly stated, is that I want a playoff. I personally do think UGA was and is good enough to be ranked number 1. But I’m not trying to support or disrespect any team to talk smack. I want to point out the wild swings in polls that point to bias or problems in voting.

I also believe LSU and Florida could be ranked number 1, 2, or 3 as well. Bama does not have the won-loss record of UGA, Florida, or LSU over the past ten years. Given the history of this crap system, voters seem to favor teams with that long history of winning over in season performance. See USC LA, Okl., and Ohio State for an illustration. Bama has not played in the same caliber of bowls as these teams have. They have not played in SEC championships in recent memory. So obviously, a rise as rapid as theirs points to bias.

The only quality opponent bama has beaten is UGA. And if poll voters were right to vote UGA in the top three, then they must know UGA had a bad game. Surely UGA was not as bad as they looked and therefore, bama was not as good as they looked. IF UGA is that bad…then obviously voters got it wrong. If they got it wrong with UGA and USC, they obviously got it wrong with LSU too…who was ranked higher than bama last week and got bumped down after a win.

I think Bama is a good team. But given how badly UGA played, and how bama struggled against Tulane and beat an inferior Clemson team, I still don’t know how good a team bama really is.

So what is the basis for bama’s rise? They have not won with consistency over the past ten years…have won one quality game out of five and are largely untested. Why would bama jump last year’s nationial champ? They play in the SEC too, so it can’t be that. They have won consistently in the SEC. All they do is win. If they were good enough to be ranked above bama last week, why not this week? I made the same argument when USC LA jumped Georgia and I think the same argument applies for every team bama jumped.

If you haven’t figured it out already, I frankly don’t think the polls have any validity. I say that in regard to UGA’s ranking and Bama’s. When you see how coaches vote for their team’s good rather than on who they think is best you come face to face with the problem. When you hear media folks favoring one team above another because it’s who they cover for a newspaper, then you see the problem.

This is why I say polls need to come out ONLY after all conferences championship games. Ohio State would have to play a conference championship game to be ranked. Then at least, we’d have a body of work for the season, we’d have SOS numbers, we could factor in season ending injuries, etc. and we’d have some head to head competition to use in deciding which teams should be ranked where. Using the BCS formula at this stage of the season gets us one tiny step closer to a playoff…even if it is only a plus one system.

The reason we don’t have one…college presidents and bowls are greedy. It is about money. They don’t want to jepordize what they have. ESPuke wants money, so they hype teams that afford them the best broadcast options for ratings and ad dollars. Through their bully pulpit they influence poll voters whether they intend to or not.

This system makes the NC nothing more than a beauty contest. Why would anyone be proud of winning that title? It is not a fair or even valid way to crown a champion. Let competition in conference play determine rankings and let a playoff determine a champion. Otherwise, only the SEC championship is a true “crowning” of a champion for our universities.

Why does he do lame commercials saying he believes in blackouts? Why does he just stand on the sidelines waving his play list to get an already loud crowd louder instead of figuring out adjustments to stop a national tv a*-whipping? Why can’t he think of any intelligent response for his half time interview except its not my job to watch body language-is that what you do Holly? Instead of believing in blackouts why doesn’t he believe in coaching his a* off like Saban? He only wins as much as he does because we have more talent than almost everyone else. Richt is a dip.

However, I must take exception to the characterization of the black jerseys “failing” last night. I don’t think they failed to fire up the fans. They didn’t get us a win…but they didn’t get us a win in the past. The players did that…the players and the coaches. Watched the game Saturday and must say that Alabama really took Georgia to the woodshed. The defense didn’t look too well and the offense never could really get it going. I don’t know his name but #82 dropped some balls that could’ve been big plays. One thing for sure, Alabama played such a classy game. I’ve had to hear so much about how good Georgia was from co-workers from the past few weeks, I think I’ll wear some black tomorrow to work just to be a little sarcastic. Frank, you made a good point as well when you referred to Mark Richt’s halftime mini-tirade interview with ESPN. Slave, I re-read my post to try to figure out how you thought I thought the black jerseys failed us. That was not what I meant if you took it as that. I like the idea of firing up the fans. I get tired of old alumns my age sitting on their butts and not hollering to get the defense fired up and the opposing offense off their game. I saw stunned fans, but I don’t think the true fans or the team gave up last night. Of course I was not there and watching on TV listening to Scott Howard.

Frank,

You must be of limited intelligence if you think Richt having a bit of fun with the Dawg Nation for like two hours of his time is enough to keep him from game planning. Is your name Frank “Beamer”? You coach big time college football? Oh===I forgot that you have spent significant time with Richt as he watches film, as he works with coordinators and runs practices. I also forgot that you’ve done the same with Saban. And yet somehow, with your busy schedule of coaching SEC football, you have time to be on this blog criticizing someone else.

I know you can’t respect a man who uses the “A” word on national TV. I know…now he is a hypocrite…he is a classless scumbag because he showed a bit of fire. Of course he is none of those things. He stands head and shoulders above Urban Meyer and Les Miles in the class department.

The Dawgs lost for several reasons. None of them related to Richt’s black out stuff. One big reason…bama played a good game.

Another reason we lost…I don’t think our players were prepared enough and this is a recurring problem early in the season. We seem to start slowly each year…struggling with lesser teams and losing to SEC caliber teams we should beat. This is a coaching problem, but it is not related to your rant on Richt’s work habits.

These blogs are the most difficult to use. It is hard to scroll through all these posts every time we try to respond to someone. I did go back and find what made me think you said the black out would fail. Here is the quote of what you posted:

I have no problem with the seniors asking to wear black, our colors are red and black. I love it fires up the fans. Sooner or late it was bound to fail, we saw it last night.

Cuz, it was no big deal really. I think since we lost wearing them, they won’t fire up the fans, but it doesn’t have to mean a “blackout” won’t be effective. Penn State has the “whiteout”. Other teams use tomahawk chops or gator chomps to show spirit. What’s wrong with a blackout and the “woof” for Dawgs? I don’t get some of these other fans criticizing us for that.

Remember in the long ago past when we played Arizona State, I am being facetious. I was impressed that the entire side of the stadium was wearing supposed to be gold but looked yellow. I thought that was an awesome look. I like the coaches getting the fans in the game. Even during a regular between the hedges, you get all kind of color combinations. ENOUGH OF THIS SPIN THE AJC COMPLAINT BANDWAGON: WORST IN THE NATION, WORST IN THE SEC, BLAH BLAH BLAH. HAVE ANY OF Y’ALL EVER SEEN THE FOOTBALL GAMBLING SCENE IN VEGAS? WELL TAKE A LOOK IF YOU GO THERE AND Y’ALL WILL SEE FOR YOURSELVES. BUT NOT ONLY THAT. IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO ALSO WITH RICHT EASTWOOD’S BEING A GENTLEMAN WHILE THE REST OF THE WORLD IS RAPIDLY REVOLVING AROUND THE I-POD SHUFFLE AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD IN TERMS OF PURE NUMBERS AND DOLLARS. To bsmythe,

To answer your question, “why the hell is USC ranked 9 and we are 11 now..and we got beat by a now ranked #2 team..and USC got spanked by a team that wasnt even ranked..i swear..F the media! USC aint sh*t”, consider this.

  1. USC didn’t trail 31-0 at the half.
  2. USC played on the road.
  3. USC made a comeback that almost won them the game.

I’m not a USC fan, but USC would wipe their butt with those black jerseys. UGA won’t get anywhere without better O-line and D-line play. John Parker Wilson won’t even need to wash his jersey this week it’s so clean. Pitiful.

Here’s my advice to Georgia. Take those black jerseys and burn them. Stop doing the “black out” thing. It doesn’t work for you. Plus, you and the rest of the country with their “color” outs copied it from the only school where it does work…Penn State. Come up with something original.

Hi. Only thing lacking is dirt being tossed into grave. Dawgs are done! In regard to BCS anyway. Not so much loss itself but manner of defeat. A team worth a damn does not go down 31-0 to a vastly inferior rival in front of home crowd! I love Dawgs but am realist about final 30 minutes. Bama let up. Drastically! Whether consciously or not. I was not comforted by final cosmetic score! I wish Dawgs well. However, guys pulled a Falcon (ouch) in Athens! Oh, Dawgs rated HIGHER than I believe they deserve.

Blitz, I am an old dude, if you are going to print in all capitals, I can’t read it. Too bad, you may have something to say that I agree with. Sten, dude you should have been around for the seventies, we would be sky high in Athens right now, 3-1, would have been great. We have become so spoiled and so used to victory that many take a defeat as the end of the season. Adversity is a fire, it burns off the bad and melds the good. We shall rise like the Phoenix. The Firebird will fly over Athens and the victory bell will ring once more. Two weeks from now if I am not mistaken.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is football. This is not a child with a disabling disease. Remember your priorities. Football is fun, life is real. Be able to discern between the two.

One thing nice about being ranked high, we just fell to the first floor, not the basement.

Now, it’s time to finish licking the wounds and get ready for UT, and the games that follow. Hopefully, we get another shot at Bama in the SEC Super Bowl.

It was NOT UGA vs al, but UGA vs Murphy’s Law. Think about this: If not for UGA, there would be no football. Back in early 1900’s a QB, from UGA,got hurt and died. The sport wanted to end all football stating it too dangerous, left it up to Gov. of Georgia to sign the bill. But the QB’s mother wrote the Gov. a letter asking to NOT sign it, that her son’s lover and memory would be for naught. The Gov. did NOT sign, thus the game of football continues and does to this day.

For what it is worth! 1.Oklahoma (43) (No gripe here) 2.Alabama (21) (Questionable but no major gripe) 3.LSU (Better #2) 4.Missouri (1) (Still too high) 5.Texas (May be true frontrunner this season) 6.Penn St. (Not tested yet) 7.Texas Tech (No gripe) 8.BYU (BullS++T) 9.USC (BullS++T) 10.South Florida (No gripe). Better Top 10 (with two pretenders eliminated) is Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Alabama, Texas Tech, Penn State, Missouri and South Florida. My charitable rank for Dawgs is #12 pending three straight wins.

Adversity will bring out either the best or the worst in a person (or team). This could propel the DAWGS towards a NC or it could take them down, down, down. I guess it’s all about that old character issue that coaches talk about. We shall see, but I was taught to look out when dealing with a wounded animal.

We didn’t quit is the one good thing about the game, but we had terrible play calling in the 1st half, and why does it take Martinez a full half to make adjustments, same for Bobo. Why all the deep bombs in the 1st half, terrible game management. Bama has weakness and we didn’t exploit those.

Bama had a great game plan but we helped them out with pentalties. Without those penalties and the one tunover that green made it would have been a different ballgame. This goes out to Meathead, oh excuse me, Meatcleaver. Well you told me to check back today and here I am. Who’s your daddy, c’mon, who’s your daddy.

This could actually wind up being the best thing for the dawgs. They needed a butt wipping like that to get their heads in order. Now if the coaching staff will start coaching and not buying into all the preseason hype then maybe they can make a respectable showing the rest of the season. The talent is there. To be five games into the season and still be the most penalized time in CF is a disgrace. I like Mark Richt as a person and he’s a great recruiter but he and the rest of the coaching staff do not know how to harness the talent they have. It’s the inmates running the asylum. Who’s in charge over there, anyway. Moreno sprinting across the field after some play when the game was well out of hand, ridiculous. Mark Richt dressing in black and saying to the media he was going to a funeral was indeed prophetic. C’mon coach, this is big boy football.

Okay, lick your wounds, bury the black uniforms and start playing sound football and maybe we will meet again in the Championship.

To Hairy Balls:

I did not hear any running of the mouth by Bama all week before the game. All the nonsense was coming out of Athens. Even Mark Richt got in on the action with his wearing black going to a funeral nonsense, how prophetic. C’mon, this is big boy football.

For the Dawg fans talking about how they never quit and came back. You could have spotted Duke 31pts at half-time and they would have held on to win. It was over at half-time and everyone including Georgia’s players new it was over. Hell, they have to give the people that pay $10k a year just to be able to buy tickets something for their money.

It comes down to discipline. The dawgs are the most undisciplined team in CF and you can’t get away with that with a good team. SC should have beaten them except for a couple miscues at the end and they are awful.

I have lived in Atlanta for over 30 years and it never ceases to amaze me how easy the chatter is when things are going well and playing the blame game when things get a little tough….the only thing worse than hearing a bunch of DAWGS moan and complain is to go back to my native state and hear about Auburn and Alabama for *12 months of the year. Lets face it, GA got a good ole fashion A— Whuppin…the kind that I enjoyed watching Herschel Walker put on the likes of Tim Bates. As for BAMA, I dont think we will be in the SEC Title game this year (good shot next year…we are young, but we are back)…..and for the DAWGS, I would start thinking about Tennessee, Vanderbilt
LSU
Florida
Kentucky
Auburn GA Tech One at a time…….you have one of the best coaches in America and it is a disgrace to see you turn on him when you feel a little pain from getting you Butts whipped (first half or no half) If you are in fact at the SEC, this is one BAMA fan that will be pulling for you, if we are not present….and yes we did just beat the hell out of you. No, USC actually trailed 21-0 at half to an unranked to team.

USC played on the road.

Who gives a sh1t.

USC made a comeback that almost won them the game.

Georgia cameback and “won” the second half 31-10.

Pretty odd how most of the fans of the team that just kicked our butts are better sports, than (some of) the tech fans, who have NOTHING to do with it, have been today. Why is that? I guess all those tech fans are trading in thier gator envy for bama now?

There’s to much offensive movement. Pass plays take to long to develop. Very few short passes across the middle. Spread and misdirection not used enough for Knowshon.

I agree with you Bill King:

I wont make any excuses for the Georgia lost. The DAWGS simply got beat by a Great Alabama Football Team Saturday night.

Although I still believe that the DAWGS are a great team, I still in my heart believe that the Dawgs are the better team. I will NOT trade us for them. Alabama just was the better Team this past Saturday Night.

Now with all the media hype, the fans hype, and probably the Team hype, and being over confident last week against Bama, they could now get down to playing some serious football. From this point on, the Dawgs need to get a lot serious about the games they are heading to next.

What cost the Dawgs the game was the 1st Quarter of penalties, and the first Five possessions of Alabama which resulted from the Dawgs penalties that Bama scored off of.

I have NEVER in my life seen the Dawgs use such poor judgement in racking up so much penalties. Because of that, Bama made the Dawgs pay for those mistakes, and pay for it Dearly. I have never seen Georgia down so may points in the first quarter, and losing 30 - 0 in the first half.

As I watched the fans sitting in Stanford Stadium stunned, I could’nt help but think what was going through the players head, and Coach Richt’s head.

Had the Dawgs played the first half like the second half of playing, they would have beaten Bama surely. For the Dawgs to Score 30 points in the second half and holding Bama to just 10 points in the second half, tells me that the Dawgs are a better team than Bama.

Bama just was the better team that night. With congrads going out to the Nick Saban and the TIDE, I will say this……….. “WE WILL MEET AGAIN IN THE SEC Championship.

I am sure that the Dawgs have learned a valuable lesson behind this. They need to HUNKER DOWN, and really play some football with NO Penalties. This is now a TEST of the DAWGS Character.

I remember a text a few years ago by the Legendary, and former Auburn Coach Pat Dye…. “The DAWGS ARE’NT MAN ENOUGH” !!!! Now Dawgs, lets prove the sports critics wrong. Lets Prove The Sports Media Wrong. Lets Prove The ESPN Sports Analyst Wrong. Show the Fans your are MEN, and not BOYS……

I have a great deal of respect, and admiration for Coach Mark Richt. He has taken this Georgia Football Program when it became a unacceptable football program, and made it a Great Football Greatness.

I have Full confidence in Coach Mark Richt, and his coaching staff. From this point on, The Georgia Bulldogs Football Team will be a Team to be Recognized.

I am confident that the Dawgs from this point on will lose no more games, and will win the SEC East. My prediction is that Bama will win the SEC West over LSU, and we will meet them again.

From that point, we will get a second chance, and will beat the TIDE. We will win the SEC Conference Championship. Black Out or NO Black Out.

The ONLY Funeral that will occur this time, that Alabama coaches were saying, will be their own when The Georgia Bulldogs finish with them.

GO Dawgs!!!! SIC EM. BEAT EM!!!!! THIS TIME, LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!!!!!

Let’s examine… last year when we were in this rut we discovered we had a running back that wore the number 24 and things started to progress. This year I’m seeing the same thing again, we are not feeding the ball to 24 when we need to be establishing the run instead of the pass. Stafford still lacks the vision for the field and the confidence to let it fly. Guy has a rocket arm, but when you have no confidence doesn’t matter. He had Mohammed on a fly pattern Sat. night with two steps and double pumped on the throw. Let it Go!! Knowshon is the key to the offense. Granted we are missing Southerland in the backfield, but 24 is the playmaker. I believe the first eight plays from scrimmage Sat. night were seven pass and one run. After that it was 17-0. We can’t establish any confidence in that young line pass protecting all the time. Skill is just an attribute unless you have the physical and mental tools to make it useful. Run the Ball!!!

About the only thing that can be said on a positive note about sat night is that the team kept fighting. Case in point, freshman center Ben Jones. The telecast zoomed in on him and Cody a couple of times, and although Cody got the best of him for most of the game, Ben never backed down or quit fighting. If the Dawgs can find five O-lineman with that kind of fight and attitude they’ll have something!! By the time this guy is a jr. he will be dominant and hopefully will be the leader of a dominant unit.

Reality definately smacked Georgia in the mouth on Saturday. I believe it goes back to 2 main factors: discipline and where the real focus should be. ThUGA had who knows how many arrests in the off season and are the most penalized team in D-1, 119 out of 119 teams! Also, when Mark Richt cried for 3 days straight about Knowshon not making the ESPN highlight reel, it makes you wonder where the real focus is. Do you think Nick Saban would have done that? Absolutely not!I think they also learned blackouts, mohawks, showboating, and all of the other gimmicks they used this year aren’t going to cut it in the SEC.

I must admit, UGA is probably in the best situation it has been in, in quite sometime. Everyone writing them off, giving up on them, saying things like “they wont finish at 500” or “they will loose three more games” or “they are terribly overated”. heck, according to all these statements, we can’t do anything but get better. I like the idea that everyone in the country has written UGA off and that they now get to be overlooked. Perhaps, all of the 7 teams we have left to play, well, will just say “Why show up, they can’t win and over look us too.” In fact, if we do make it back to the SEC Championshop and get a 2nd shot at Alabama, perhaps they too will show up and play like we are a sub 500 football team as everyone would suggest. The bandwagon jumpers will always be there. I am a fan thru and thru, that means the good, the bad, and even the games we get lucky in. And for those of you knocking Mark Richt, perhaps he has not won a national title, but look at his record since coming to UGA, that really speaks for itself.

It has become abundantly clear that Richt is not the coach we thought he was. When Van Gorder left, so did the intensity (or at least the consistent intensity.) Bobo clearly isn’t getting it done as an O.C. as the game plans against South Carolina and Alabama were terrible. UGA hasn’t executed consistently on offense or defense this season (or last: dropped balls, bad routes, missed open receivers, poor blocking, poor game management, poor tackling, terrible coverage, no consistent pressure on opposing QB’s, you name it) Willie Martinez? What can one say other than he is, without a doubt, the worst D.C. I’ve ever seen in watching UGA football since the early 1970’s. Since Richt’s arrival, UGA has become the most penalized team in the SEC which shows a lack of discipline. As for Martinez, combine the embarrassing losses to West Virginia, Tennessee x 2, South Carolina, Alabama. Please, anyone correct me but to my knowledge, Richt has yet to fire a coach despite the fact that QB’s improve little or not at all under Bobo, the defense at UGA doesn’t intimidate any team in the SEC while the defensive schemes seem to be created to keep lesser teams in the games as long as possible and give better teams ample opportunities to win, and the kickoff coverage has been AWFUL for years. That Richt hasn’t started cleaning house tells me that UGA most likely will never win another SEC title and has no chance at a national title.

JW, you hit the nail squarely on the head, great job!!!!! Wish I could have said it as well as you did. It is clear the dawg program is in jeopardy, kinda like a rowboat with lots of holes. I’m gonna sit back and watch, take notes, and try not let the frustration overwhelm me. With the economy in the tank, if the dawgs go in the tank too, what’s next????
