A prime-time win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The work by Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit on Saturday night’s nationally televised ABC prime-time coverage of the win over Arizona State was a refreshing change from the muddled work CBS’ SEC coverage has been exhibiting lately.
They started out playing it pretty evenly, giving plenty of props to the Sun Devils’ Rudy Carpenter, but once the Dawgs took control of the game on the field, the ABC duo made no attempt to hide how impressed they were with Georgia. At times, the commentary couldn’t have been more positive if they’d been getting their paychecks from the same place as Scott Howard and Eric Zeier on radio.
Said Musburger after Knowshon Moreno went airborne for the Dawgs’ first touchdown: “That’s a Heisman run.” The ABC duo continually touted Matt Stafford’s arm and NFL potential, and were awestruck by the work of freshman receiver A.J. Green. After his touchdown catch, Musburger declared Green to be a candidate for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the top college football wide receiver. And by midway through the fourth quarter, having already chalked up the Tempe game as a Georgia win, Herbstreit was saying flatly that with Georgia’s schedule if the Dawgs go undefeated, there’s no way they won’t be playing for the national championship.
It wasn’t all unquestioning praise, however, which gave the generally gee-whiz tone of the coverage that much more credibility. At the end of the game, Herbstreit noted correctly that the Dawgs still have some things to work on, including the running game inside the 5-yard line and kickoff coverage.
But considering the lack of respect the Bulldogs had been getting nationally so far this season, especially from ABC subsidiary ESPN, and the resulting poll slippage, it was great to watch a game where the coverage clearly made the case for Georgia’s ranking as one of this season’s elite teams.
That it was in prime time and aired across the country was icing on the cake.
BULLDOG BITES: The Dawgs’ offense continued to show off its big-play capability, but that 10-play, 91-yard first touchdown drive provided a heartening display of ball control. The rejiggered line definitely was improved over the South Carolina game, though the Dawgs looked better in the passing game than running, especially, as Herbstreit noted, the short running game. Twice, the Dawgs couldn’t punch it in from the 1, though they made no attempt to conserve the clock on that last drive at the end, which was a good thing. Calling time to score style points would have been tacky and needy-looking. Also, the pass-protection pocket did collapse early a couple of times, resulting in one sack of Stafford, so there’s still plenty of work in general to do on the line. … The Georgia defense looked really good most of the night. They played a bit too loose on that first ASU drive of the second half (what is it about Georgia and its slow starts after halftime?), with clearly blown coverage by the secondary on the touchdown, but sacking Carpenter four times, completely shutting down the Sun Devils’ running game and keeping ASU’s passing game way below its usual output showed Georgia’s defense to be the real thing. … Stafford looked sharp much of the night zipping balls to Green and Co., but he continues to be off-target much of the time on the really long passes downfield. I know the long ball is tempting when your QB has a howitzer for an arm, but I wish Mike Bobo would be more selective in those deep calls. … A.J. Green was spectacular in the first half, the way he went up for the ball and made circus catches. He’s going to win some big games down the road. … The kickoff coverage issues Herbstreit mentioned are Georgia’s longest-standing uncorrected problem. This week, the kicks generally were better (with the exception of one that went out of bounds), for the most part hitting between the 5 and the goal line, but the coverage was porous, regularly leaving seams for the return man to hit. Former Georgia kicker Kevin Butler thinks the problem is that the coverage team is letting itself get locked up with blockers rather than moving to the ball. Whatever it is, regularly letting the other team begin a drive near its own 40 is far from ideal. And while on the subject of special teams, Georgia had to burn some timeouts because of special teams problems, one on a punt (apparently because the coach didn’t think we were going to get the kick off in time) and another couple because the Dawgs didn’t have the right personnel on the field for field goal tries. Mark Richt needs to light a fire under special teams coach John Fabris. … The penalty situation is getting dire for Georgia. ASU got three first downs via penalties and Georgia stymied one of its own drives with numerous flags. As the level of competition increases, that’s going to become a bigger problem. That said, a few of Saturday night’s calls were ultra picky at best (particularly a roughing-the-passer flag) and flat-out questionable in some cases. At the same time, the officials missed quite a few clips, blocks in the back and too many holds to count.
ALSO NOTED: As of this writing, it hasn’t been made official yet that ESPN’s “Game Day” crew is coming to Athens, but Herbstreit seemed to think it was a done deal. Speaking of next week’s game against Alabama during the fourth quarter, he said, “I’ll be there in the morning [on Saturday].” … Former Georgia great Matt Stinchcomb is developing quite nicely as a broadcaster in his work on the Georgia Football Radio Network’s post-game show. He’s articulate and knowledgeable. … I really like the wry humor Richt displays in those brief on-field TV interviews.

You are like many of the UGA fans today… negative! You focus on the negative every single week while briefly mentioning the positive. Hey! why don’t you go down there and coach - it sounds like you have all the answers… I used to enjoy reading your insight into the game and the team when you first started this thing - but now I can’t stand reading it… I would much rather read Chip Tower’s blog. Be a fan and not a critic - we have too many of those wearing red and black these days… enjoy the wins while we have them… I went to school during the Goff and Donnan eras - what would you have said then on this blog?!

Give it up Bill, with some people you just cannot win. If you describe something that needs work as special teams does, then you are negative. If you say Knowshon has a legitimate shot at the Hiesman because of his outstading runs, then you are a delusional homer. I guess you could just make it short and say nice to win in the desert, now let’s play Bama.
You gotta admit one thing, this season has been fun so far. I hope we keep it that way.

I was impressed by the coverage. They complimented all our big playmakers and gave the Sun Devils their due as well.
I was particularly gratified to hear them remark several times that Stafford had the best arm of any college QB today and even better than many NFL QBs!
A refreshing change.

Knowshon knows that ESPN will not keep up the compliments when Nick Satin gets to town. They like him as much as USC. No matter we will show them as UGA goes to 4 strait wins over Bama. Green will show why he is better than Joulio. Go Dawgs! To hell with Bama Jelly!

so herbstreit is a clueless moron for the past 9 months, but once he says something good about uga hes telling it like it is and has worthwhile opinion? classic uga. i still dont get the love for stafford. hes decent, but if i had a dollar for every overthrown pass in the game, id have enough to get a large pizza for sure. plus that blown pass in the backfield was pretty pathetic, and almost lost them the ball.

I couldn’t disagree more. Brent Musberger annoys me to no end. He seems to want to do the play-by-play AND color. He just never shuts up. He made the UCLA -Tenn. game almost unwatchable. Only my love of the Dawgs and excitement over their play enabled me to shut him out.

The Dawg “gunners” on special teams HAVE TO slow to control speed once they get within 10 yards. Just going full-speed and being side stepped leaving 10 blockers on 8 results in good field position(for them)and eventually some all-the-ways.

Dead on with your comments Bill King. I have grown annoyed with Chip Towers blogs and comments. Bad Attitude might be his alias. Kick coverage is he weakness. I like the deep kicks better. They are getting tacklers down there they just aren’t getting into good position to corral the returner. I thought AJ Green’s break-out game was going to be against the Game Chickens. I was wrong but they should have used him more in that game. This team certainly has all the talent and key players to win it all. The only thing that could prevent them from winning the NC this year is poor play calling and stupid penalties. Although the refs called some bad ones last night.
Go Dawgs!

How is it that both USC and Oklahoma had byes but still get enough votes from the desk’perts to stay at #1 and #2?
By the way, this is the SECOND time this year that USC had a bye and stayed at #1…
It’s time to dump the pollsters for a playoff system.

Question: How are the dawgs gonna stack up against Bama if the dawgs continue to:1. incur lots of penalties 2. disorganization on the sidelines 3. 10 men on the punt team 4. kickoffs out of bounds 5. revisiting of attention deficit disorder from time to time…… 6. disagreements from players to coaches and vice versa Just wondering…………

Maybe way too picky for this board, but I thought the HD quality of the ABC broadcast was horrible. ESPN HD, for once, actually had very good picture quality. I was disappointed that ABC didn’t offer “spectacular high definition” as their ESPN counterparts advertise.
Most importantly, the Dogs got it done (not losing sight of the forest for the trees!)

May picked Georgia without hesitation. Lou: “well, I have to go with the University of Georgia.” Very reluctant to pick Georgia. Had to remind everyone that he picked South Carolina in an upset last weekend. Guess what, “Dr. Lou?” You’re wrong again!!
May still has the meat of the schedule to pick against Georgia every week. He’s dying for Georgia to lose each week. Sadly he and Dr. Lou have a great impact on who plays on 1/8.

I am seriously concerned about the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. They are playing an extremely talented Alabama team that chews up teams and spits them out like chewing tobacco. I do want the Dawgs to have a really good season, but I am afraid that they are going to be seriously hurt after playing the Crimson Tide on Saturday night. Alabama is just so much more physical than Georgia. I will be so embarrassed if Georgia does not get but 3 first downs and even more embarassed if Alabama shuts them out for a great big old goose egg on the evening. Alabama will utterly wear down Georgia’s poor defensive line with their humongous and ultra-talented offensive line. The Crimson Tide will dominate with its running game. It’s a shame that the Bulldogs just don’t have the stuff to stop it. You can deposit this one in the bank for Alabama on Saturday. They will absolutely destroy the Dawgs. I suppose we can still go ahead and do the pointless by playing the game, but it will only avail Georgia fans nothing but pain and disappointment. Some things in life just have to be inevitable. So lets just let it be.

Tide #1 and Bankit:
Hi. This is Bear Bryant.
FYI, I’m dead.
Now, I know you guys want to resurrect me. Heck, I’d like to resurrect me, too. To be honest, heaven’s boring. Nobody to cuss out (God sorta frowns on that up here), and it’s no big deal to walk on water anymore. Everybody up here can do it. But I’ve gotta tell ya—the resurrection thing just ain’t gonna happen. That was Jesus’ gig and it was a limited engagement. So I’ve gotta stay up here.
I’ve seen some people predicting some pretty ridiculous scores for the upcoming Georgia-Alabama game. Some guy even predicted 42-10, which I presume was based on the idea that I’m coming back. But, as I said, I can’t. Besides, no Alabama team has ever scored more than 40 on Georgia. Not even my best teams could do that. So I’m a little insulted if you think that slimy Saban guy could accomplish what I couldn’t. I know y’all think he’s a genius (heck, he’d better have something going for him, because he sure doesn’t have it in the character department, and, let’s face it, he’s just flat out ugly), but he’s going to be going up against a pretty good coach in that Mark Richt fella. They’re already makin’ room for Coach Richt up here, even though he’s got a while yet to go on earth. In fact, they’ve reserved a pretty nice spot in heaven for Coach Richt. God likes him. Funny—they don’t seem to be expecting Coach Saban to come here. St. Peter made some crack the other day about him wearing my hat. Said it might catch fire if he wears it where he’s gonna end up. I didn’t think that was very funny.
My point is, I’m staying here, and while I’d like to see the Tide roll, my sources say that it just isn’t in the, uh, works (I can’t say cards. That’s one of those no-no expressions). And I’m not coming back, not ever. Not even for Gameday. I’m stuck up here. Sorry, fellas. Pray for something else, like for some little kid to be cured of cancer. That’s the kind of prayer God likes to hear. Seems that all he gets out of Alabama fans is prayers for return to relevance. That and some really awful things about Tommy Tuberville. You guys really have to stop that sort of thing. It’s unChristian. Keep that up and you’ll all end up in the place Coach Saban is going.
Oh, and by the way: tell Coach Saban to keep his nasty little hands off my hat. It’s too big for him anyway.

Good blawg, Bill; not negative, just pointing out what the Dawgs need to work on. I too prefer Vern over Brent. Brent (and Herb) tend sometimes to go off on inane subjects in the middle of important plays and/or drives. EG, WAY too much time on ASU’s other, non-football athletes. I did like the ABC coverage of the game. It was probably pretty sickening for ASU fans to hear though. Kinda like us watching the UGA-UF game. The announcers go on and on about Tebow of Nazareth the entire game —- win or lose. I loved all of the praise heaped on Stafford. For a minute there I thought I was at the NFL Scouting Combine.
We’ve had special teams issues well before this season. Coach Fabris’ seat should be feeling warm.
Over all, it was a good national stage for UGA. the dawgs performed well. I was glad to see green finally get the ball. ASU having to account for him in the second half opened up the run game for Moreno. No more stacking the line. Moreno by ground. Green by air. If one doesn’t get you then the other one will.

HE LET DOOLEY GO BEFORE HE WANTED TO LEAVE, SO MAYBE HE MIGHT HAVE MESSED UP AND DONE SOMETHING RIGHT THIS TIME. ANYWAY, I LEAVE AGAIN FOR IRAQ ON OCT. 4TH, WITH TV BEING MY STADIUM SEAT. GEORGIA OVER ‘BAMA IN A CLOSE ONE. GOD BLESS EVERYONE, EVEN BAMA!

Thanks for checking ot the site Borodawg. The site is brand new and is written by a UGA fan, but isn’t a “homer” site. I didn’t even know he had started it until this Saturday. GO DAWGS!!!!

The only people who bring up the Bear are the ignorant, drunken, white trash dawgs fans. The Bear is gone, its all about Saban. P.S. Why do all dawgs fans shop at Wal Mart??? Oh yeah because they get an employee discount.
