Smack time again

We’re still in that silly season when the delusional fans of the Gamecocks talk smack. This happens every year until one of two things ends it: Either Georgia makes South Carolina look pathetic (remember the shut-out?), or in years when the Gamecocks eke out a win (as last year), the Cocks then proceed to fall apart in the latter half of the season (again, as happened last year).

The 2007 UGA-SC game wasn’t exactly a peak performance from either team. South Carolina’s defense was pretty good, but their offense stunk. Georgia’s defense was pretty good but was let down by its offense, which easily could have won the game but kept shooting itself in the foot with things like dropped touchdown passes. After stumbling around another couple of games, the Dawgs got better. WAY better, becoming the hottest team in the country. After making a brief climb up the polls, Steve Spurrier’s team collapsed.

Which made many a fan of other schools smile, because let’s face it, no one outside of the fandom of his current employer can stand Steve Spurrier. Yes, he’s a great offensive coach, or at least he was in his heyday at Florida. But he’s also smug, arrogant and petty.

Witness last year’s post-game belittling of the Dawgs (whom he’s never forgiven for humiliating him in his senior year at UF) on Spurrier’s TV show. “It wasn’t like they were some big, powerful team,” Spurrier said.

Yeah, no one’s ever accused Spurrier of being classy.

But the fact is, South Carolina is the program found wanting these days, the occasional big win notwithstanding. Of the Dawgs’ two losses last year, the one that rankled the most wasn’t the whipping in Knoxville. We just got flat-out beat that day, no excuses. What didn’t go down well was the fact that we gave away the game to a mediocre South Carolina with sloppy play.

Even though the Steve Spurrier of today is more like Spurrier Lite, he still engenders a lot of hatred in the Bulldog Nation. So on top of all the other reasons Georgia needs to win convincingly Saturday, pouring a little salt in the wounds on the no longer invincible Ole Ball Coach would make it that much more satisfying.

Speaking of jerks who’ve coached South Carolina, you’ve got to wonder how long ESPN can continue to damage its credibility by providing a venue for the pedestrian analysis, amateurish delivery and transparent biases of Lou Holtz. It’s ridiculous enough that Holtz always picks his former teams to win, no matter who they’re playing or how badly they’re doing, and that he sprays the desk with spittle as he slurs through another mushmouth meandering. But, like Spurrier, he seems to have a particular hatred for UGA that shows up in almost every comment he makes about the Dawgs.

Last week, as ESPN showed a replay of defensive end Demarcus Dobbs rambling for an unlikely touchdown after his interception, Holtz couldn’t resist getting in another petty dig: “I thought they had a lot of speed at Georgia.”

It’s way past time for ESPN to shove the old has-been into retirement.

And while on the subject of ESPN: They erred in claiming that the reason they didn’t show Knowshon Moreno’s leap over a Central Michigan defender last Saturday was because FSN hadn’t given them that clip. ESPN had the clip and in fact included a brief portion of it, without mention, in one of those montages of plays they show in the outtro to a commercial.

Bottom line: ESPN blew it. Just like the day they hired Lou Holtz.

Hate to break it to you, but more college football fans like watching Spurrier put it on the Dawgs than you think. He has much more personality and brings more fun to the game than your boy Richt ever does. I love how Dawg fans think they are the center of the universe and whatever they hate, everyone else obviously does. Get over yourself.

Well said Bill King. Appreciate you giving column coverage to the things many of us have said all along about Spurrier and Holtz.

Holtz’s stick in his craw over the DAWGS, his incessant yammering over Notre Dame football plus ESPN’s elevation of Holtz to professor status makes us want to gag.

Someone needs to inform the ESPN announcers of the huge deal the network has just made with the SEC. Maybe some respect would be forthcoming.

ESPN would be doing all football fans a favor by giving less air time to Holtz. He is definitely a “homer” for the Irish. But, wouldn’t ESPN be better to watch if they fired about 90% of their expert analysts in all sports and started again with a whole new and improved set of fresh ideas and fresh faces? Maybe then, we could get some UGA coverage on ESPN.

I agree! ESPN has to show Lou the door. He is flat out awful and impossible to listen too. The whole ESPN crew has pretty much disgusted me this year. They can’t seem to express enough how much they love Tebow, Ohio State and USC. The latest Heisman Watch votes cast on ESPN’s website doesn’t even have Stafford in the top 7. His QB rating is only 30 points higher that Tebow’s but there Tebow sits with the most number 1 votes. At least Moreno moved up to number 3. Georgia really needs to destroy Carolina this weekend and maybe that will earn them a little respect.

The older I get the more I mellow out, not! Hatred is a strong word, but you hit the nail on the head in all areas of your column this morning.

Spurrier is an arrogant A$$. Holtz is a has been homer, and ESPN’s credibility has seriously eroded.

Gamecock fans are delusional? UGA beat two teams last year that finished the season ranked. Then whine about not being in the NC game, when they didn’t even win the East. I’ll bet you that UGA won’t win the East this year either. Let me see what I have in my back pocket…yeah, it’s your NC game invite from last year. Still got it.

nice whine fest. the reason you guys dont get respect on espn is because you havent won a title in close to 30 years. USC, UF, LSU and OSU get coverage, because they are the the teams that have won the national title for the past 6ish years. keep winning and youll get your coverage, but beating georgia southern in week one isnt going to impress many people

If ESPN had shown Georgia highlights and given them a little credit, USC may have dropped to #2 before the “Game of the Century”. Can’t let that happen. Once this week is over, Georgia will start getting recognized with Oklahoma, Missouri, etc. as legitimate teams.

Droolbucket Holtz is painful to watch. His slurring and spitting are disgusting. He’s entitled to his opinions of course, but he’s unbearable to listen to or watch. The cameramen must wear raincoats. With a slobbering face for radio, but a voice for the internet, TV is not for him…

By 74Dawg

September 11, 2008 1:11 PM | Link to this

‘a face for radio and a voice for the interner’. You almost made me choke on my lunch AC. Good one. The main problem with Holtz is he is BORING . And why would anyone want to watch an entertainment program that suddenly becomes boring . Or an aleged analyst that is nearly ALWAYS wrong. When was the last time Holtz got a game pick right ? And he doesn’t even bother to learnthe players names he is talking about . What was that he called David Pollack ?> Well considering “the play” in the end zone against a Holtz coached SC , He has probably called him worse :)

Well said Bill! Holtz has had it out for the Dawgs since the Donnan days. I can still remember him crying to the national media about how we were playing to rough in the sandbox. I guess if you can get past his annoying voice, you could look at what he does as entertainment. You sure as hell wouldn’t want to make any wagers on his picks.

I could care less about the jump getting any coverage. Let’s just take care of business and EARN IT and the rest will work itself out.

Holtz picked ND to win 11 games this season. Even with that incredibly creampuff schedule of theirs, that is still absurd and speaks to the blatant hypocrisy of Holtz. I really don’t know if it’s personal though - I’m more of the mind that he’s intentionally creating this idiotic persona to provide a more colorful caricature for tv audiences. With a few notable exceptions, the ESPN game day crew certainly espouse style over substance.

By NewnanDawgCF

September 11, 2008 1:26 PM | Link to this

Thank you!Thank you! Thank you! I’m soooo glad there is a discussion of how bad Holtz is. I had heard when he first when on ESPN that he had a 2 yr. contract and thought for sure he’d be gone after that, but there he still sits. I cannot believe that ESPN can’t get someone better. Let him write a column on their website or something, but his voice and spitting are disgusting, not to mention his complete lack of preperation to discuss any team other than his few favorites. He continuously gets names wrong even in huge games with well known guys and makes an idiot of himself (remember D. J. Stokely? Evidently, he played for UGA instead of Shockley in the SEC Championship game). Congrats to his son on the job he is doing, but I hate that Lou might be around longer because of it.

As for Spurrier, he has definately mellowed, and unfortunately for him, I think that has taken away the edge that made him a great coach. I have to objectively give him great credit for the job he did at UF. However, I am willing to slam him for letting that loser Garcia back on the team. Why hasn’t there been more discussion of what an aweful decision that was? I’ve read a lot about that guy beyond just the actual arrests and there is no reason he should have the privilege of a college scholarship, let alone a place on the football team.

On the positive front, Go Dawgs!

Granny Clampit History Lesson…Not only did he mispronounce DJ’s name, when recruiting Reggie Brown, he called him by the wrong name and Reggie’s momma threw him out of the house. He also called Alabama’s John Parker Wilson….Sarah Jessica Parker. The best story is when his assitants from ND testified in a lawsuit that Lou was not mentally competent during his last year..and one of those assistants that testified was Bob Davie. Other than ND alumni, who really wants to watch this guy on ESPN?

Rece Davis is fine, and the game day crew can be at times. Look they get paid to hype the games and the next one thier network is the greatest thing going. UGA is going to get plenty of airtime very soon.

Mark May and Lou Holtz are just irritation however. Goeff is right, we really dont need a couple of charicatures putting on some skit, when folks tune in as college football fans. It’s absolutely predictable. I get that the man coached here and there. I expect a mention of that. But its the entire program. I am also convinced that the producers tell Mark May to mention before and after every commercial break that he played football at Pitt 20 yrs ago, so that the audience has some clue how he ever got that job.

By AltamahaDawg

September 11, 2008 3:21 PM | Link to this

Actually Herbs holding a grudge about that Bowl doesnt bother me. He doesnt talk about it over and over. Its not his whole persona, and he will give UGA its due from time to time. The gameday show definetely is somewhat better at just covering the sport, not personalizing it to agonizing ends.

By TV is a business

September 11, 2008 3:48 PM | Link to this

Guys,

I’ve worked in the TV sports business for 12 years. When you pay billions in rights fees to the NFL, NBA, PAC-10, Big 10, or the SEC, you’re going to make your money back on the ratings, ad dollars & subscription fees from cable operators. The SEC deal doesn’t begin w/ESPN until ‘09. ABC/ESPN is looking to do a huge rating number this weekend for USC/ Ohio State. Hell, Herbstreit said earlier today that ESPN was promoting it like it was the National Championship game.

I’m not saying ESPN is biased. I’m saying that they’ve got a vested business interest in who they have current rights deals with, including Florida (they telecast their spring game). It’s ALL ABOUT RATINGS & AD DOLLARS! It’s not true sports journalism.

As for Moreno & Dawg highlights, his hurdle play should’ve at least been in a Top 10 plays. I guarantee if Beanie Wells would’ve done that, we’d be sick of seeing it by now. We’ll get a lot of publicity if we keep winning, especially with our schedule.

This is the year for the Dogs to show their stuff. The Gamecocks have no quarterback, a half of a defence. Georgia has a proven quarterback, good running backs and some recievers who can catch the ball, the defence seems to be good, the special teams are coming along. The Bulldogs need to put up or shut. If they are going to win th NC the time is to start now.

As a diehard DAWG fan who has watched college football live this week on ESPN, I have been furious with Reese Davis. He has been such a smart a** about the Knowshon clip. Bottom line is they dropped the ball not showing replays of the play until they were called out on it. As fans we need to get over it and quit watching them. I’m guessing ESPN is tryng to use Holtz for football much like they use Vitale for basketball. Nice try, but Vitale’s love of everything Duke is not nearly as annoying as trying to decipher what Holtz is literally trying to spit out. His overt bias toward other schools is intolerable enough, but Holtz can’t stop there; he has to have a bias against other programs, too.

ESPN, instead of touting this guy as some guru of football, should be checking his contract for dismissal grounds. This contrary human wrinkle gets almost every statement of fact wrong. He’s pathetic.

I want to see Georgia back up all this big talk with a beat down of South Carolina. But, the truth is as “cocky” (pun intended) as the Dawgs are, I guarantee you that those that make the drive over to Columbia are gonna have more than a few butterflies in those dawg guts of theirs over the evil genius and what he might have cooked up for them. As bad as he’s hated the Dawgs still are scared of him. This should be a blow out, and if it’s not, it’s just another example of that bad gene that Mark Richt has that lets him figure a way out to blow the big opportunity. Just like he did at Florida State and just like he blew the best chance Georgia’s had since Herschel in 2002 by playing his “smile on his face” backup against Florida. Here we go Saint Mark, for your sake, I hope the hype has substance for your sake, because this one, well it shouldn’t be close but I’m sure you’ll figure a way out to make it a nail biter.

I actually laughed out loud Thursday night. ESPN bozos are attempting to ballyhoo the USC-Ohio State showdown as the clash of the century. How truly sad! Is USC good. Yes. Is Ohio State good? Highly debatable! All announcers agreed that if Ohio State wins it should vault five spaces all the way to No. 1. What about three teams (not acounting No. 1 USC) above the Sickeyes? Makes no difference to these biased scumbuckets! Ohio State is terribly overrated. I just wish they played someone besides techical colleges after the Saturday clash. So what if they run the table after USC? Vanderbilt would STILL be able to clean their clock! So, beloved Dawgs, one loss offers barest of outside BCS opportunity. Two or more losses means wait until next year for BCS spot. Just drop the SEC bouts next season to face ACC and Big 12 squads. That will show USC and Ohio State!

T-Vill, He is actually a doctor now, so call him Dr. Holtz. Even Mark May is having a hard time not looking at him like he is a buffoon. After he picked ND to beat Michigan and then stated that they would be undefeated meeting USC, Mark pointed out they almost lost to San Diego State—Mark looking absolutely incredulous. Then Holtz and him started play boxing. Then ESPN cut to the Rutgers and NC game. This actually happened.

Yeah. ESPN was as fault for sure. I was one of those fans looking forward to watching ESPN that night to catch “The Hurdle” since I don’t get FSN. Boy, was I let down.

ESPN seems to be trying to make it up by running a feature segment on Moreno this weekend. I heard Kirk Herbstreit (sp?) on 680thefan asking UGA fans to give it a rest and there was no conspiracy against UGA. It seems ESPN has been bombarded by Dawg Nation with complaints. Not to mention the article circulating the internet where ESPN passes blame on to FSN. What a joke!
