Doing it with style

Without getting into the debate over whether “style points” are necessary for a team playing at the elite level of BCS football, the Dawgs certainly notched a few Saturday in their last prep session before beginning the SEC exams next week in Columbia.

Some of what was learned: Georgia’s big-strike offense definitely benefits from the fact that Knowshon Moreno has at least a few drops of Kryptonian blood in him. … Matthew Stafford and Mohamed Massaquoi as a passing tandem is becoming something really special. … In addition to MoMass, Georgia’s incredibly deep receiving corps in general is looking the sharpest this early in the season in quite some time. … While known for its big plays, this offense is capable of grinding out a 99-yard scoring drive, in this case one that got kicked into gear when Stafford took off on 3rd and 9 at the Georgia 1 and ran 23 yards for a first down.

On the defensive side, we learned a 266-pound defensive end can return an interception 78 yards for a touchdown, just barely, if he’s accompanied by a convoy of teammates urging him on. … With Jeff Owens out for the year and Willie Martinez limiting the Dawgs to mostly vanilla defensive schemes in a nonconference game, the down linemen aren’t able to put much pressure on a QB without the help of a blitz. … And Georgia’s defense hasn’t quite figured out how to keep its focus for a full four quarters of play, faltering at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half. On the Chippewas’ first touchdown, a bad scheme or blown coverage left the receiver uncovered on a fade route. And while most of Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour’s passing yardage came in the dinks and dunks that are typical of a spread offense with no running game, sloppy tackling on Georgia’s part allowed some of those throws to gain more yardage than they should have.

We also learned Georgia’s biggest weakness appears to be in the kickoff game, where some drastic improvement is needed. Between pooch kicks that didn’t even make it to the 20-yard line and one kick out of bounds (which now lets the other team start at the 40) and coverage that remains suspect, Georgia too often let the Chipps begin their drives with great field position, with their average start on the 33-yard line and their worst on the 22. It was even worse when Asher Allen was penalized for unwisely taking his helmet off during the understandable celebration that followed Demarcus Dobbs’ touchdown and Georgia had to kick off from its 15. Walsh pooched it again and Central Michigan returned the kick 28 yards to the Georgia 40, leading to their first score. That won’t cut it in SEC play, as Coach Richt acknowledged to the Associated Press after the game. Some of it was coverage, Richt said, but “a lot of it was hang time. You’ve got to give guys a chance to get down in coverage.” Richt said walk-on Jamie Lindley might get a chance to try kickoffs.

MORE GOOD STUFF: Georgia was 9 for 12 on third-down conversions. … Those swing passes to Moreno continue to be extremely productive. One of these days he’s going to break one all the way. … Moreno’s backups continue to impress, with Caleb King doing a nice job of reading his holes, and Richard Samuel showing a lot of power. With Samuel running hard, Georgia’s last fourth-quarter drive probably would have added another TD to the score if not for a bobbled snap that resulted in a Joe Cox fumble. Cox looked good otherwise, though, with some sharp passing. … Moreno showed heads-up play jumping on what looked like a fumble in the end zone, though on review it was ruled the receiver was down before the ball came out. … Before the game, Georgia honored quite a few of its students for national championships, including the gymnastics, equestrian and men’s tennis teams and our three-time champion majorettes.

NOT SO GOOD: Still too many penalties (nine), including a couple of offsides calls on the defensive front and false starts on the offense. … While the Dawgs looked extremely sharp on most of their drives, the offensive line at times didn’t assert itself, most notably when it took three tries to punch it in from the 1-yard line.

FUN STUFF: Moreno was again the ringleader in getting the Dawgs up and dancing on the sideline (along with many fans in the stands) after the Dobbs score. Replacing last year’s Soulja Boy was Young Jeezy’s “Put On.” I’m not sure how long that one will last once Damon Evans gets a look at the lyrics, though. … Best laugh of the day came during WNGC’s “Fifth Quarter Show” when a caller noted Vince Dooley’s birthday was last week and then added that Barbara Dooley’s is coming up this next week. Kevin Butler’s comment: “Wow, a Dooley stalker.”

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…. UGa still cant put away patsy teams and score 60 to 70 points on them and USC stays home and is still ranked #1. Everybody Knows UGA is OVERRATED except there delusional fans. My Grandmother could have hurdled Both GSU and Central Mich. combined! Big deal for Moreno. Particularly when a fat overweight lineman runs an interception back for a 78 yard TD. How Comical, Wow The Chippewas are a big scary team. Clemson showed us last year that Central Mich. was a joke. Yep UGA is #2 and we all know what #2 is which is sh1t!

Put on definately doesn’t need to be stopped, they play a mixed version of the song anyway without the “choice” lyrics. The redcoats are also playing Yung Wun’s “tear it up” which sounds awesome! The crowd definately was loud and stayed deep in the fourth quarter. We need to get even crazier for bama, and put on should be played at least 3 times a game!

OK DAWG FANS ITS BEEN COOL BEATING UP ON HIGHSCHOOL TEAMS BUT NOW COMES THE TEST AND SOME CRITIQUES AND MAJOR CONCERN FOR THE DOGS. 1. BOTH LINES HAVE NOT DOMINATED AGAIST LESSER TALENT. WHILE THE RUNNING GAME AND THE PASSING GAME HAS BEEN BALANCE AND PUT UP NUMBERS, THE O-LINE IS NOT DOMINATING LIKE THEY SHOULD AGAINST 250LB DT’S WHILE THE D-LINE HAS NOT BEEN GETTING PRESSURE AND NOT GETTING A PUSH LIKE THEY SHOULD . BOTH LINES MUST DO A GREATER JOB AGAINST SEC TEAMS AND D-LINE BETTER GET PRESSURE ON ARIZONA ST OR THEY WILL PUT UP 400 YRDS PASSING. 2. SPECIAL TEAMS AND PENALITIES MUST IMPROVE. 3. WILLIE MARTINEZ IS A GOOD DC BUT GIVES UP TO MANY YARDS. NOT SURE IF ITS THE SCHEME OR BAD EXECUTION BUT THE DEFENSE NEEDS TO GET MORE STINGY WITH PASSING AND RUSHING YARDS ALONG WITH POINTS. ALSO TEAMS ARE GETTING IN RED ZONE ON D. THIS WILL COME BACK AND BITE US WHEN WE PLAY TEAMS LIKE LSU AND FLA. ON THE GOOD SIDE, HAVE BEEN IMPRESS WITH GA RECIEVERS IN PARTICULAR AJ GREEN. ALSO SAW I.TROUPE COME IN AND SHINE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET SOME REPS IN WITH 1ST TEAM. RB LOOKS GOOD ALSO BUT CALEB MUST HIT THE HOLE AND STOP DANCING AROUND TOO MUCH AND GET UP THE FEILD. SAMUEL LOOKS GOOD AND SOLID AND TO THINK HE IS ONLY 17. OVERALL THERE IS ALOT LOT OF ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT ESPECIALLY ON THE LINES AND DEFENSE BUT IF THEY DO GET THIS CORRECTED SOON AND GELL OUT, GA DOGS ARE GOING TO BE TOUGH FOR ANY TEAM IN THE NATION TO BEAT. BY THE WAY KEEP IT CRUNK THIS YR WITH THE ATHEM FOR “08” GEEZY ” I PUT ON”!

Maybe (just maybe) after this week’s game with the GameCocks, Vandy will start getting some respect in Athens…

What I’m saying is GA & the SEC ‘world’ will suddenly realize that SC can play football after the game is closer than expected…and that Vandy’s wins in ‘07 & ‘08 over SC were legit…

Dawgs should keep in mind, too, that Vandy won ‘between the hedges’ in ‘06 and had the Dawgs’on the ropes’ in ‘07 until a late fumble gave you dawgs the opportunity to win by a FG…

So stop living in the past…expect a good game from the Ole Ball Coach…and we’ll see you at HomeComing on Oct. 18th…Vanderbilt fans can’t wait…

Now I’ve seen it all: a Vandy fan talking smack. I always liked Vanderbilt- still do. But stow the arrogance until the ‘Dores at least break .500 for the season. It’s unbecoming to strut just yet, Vanderbilt fans. I personally hope y’all go 11-1. It can only help UGA if you beat every team excepting them. Good luck, but try humility until you achieve real success, okay?

What I ‘learned’ from the weekend…Georgia’s got a lot of weapons and a staff that knows how to employ them. The other thing I learned is that Florida still doesn’t have a running game to take the pressure off Tebow - unless you count ‘Percy go wide’. Either way, those two, Tebow and Harvin will have a hard time staying healthy. (Knock Wood)

Hard to tell how good we are or aren’t at this point playing two lesser teams.

The offense certainly appeared explosive and can grind out yards both running and passing. However, I didn’t like seeing our run game stuffed a half a dozen times including a few goal line runs this weekend. We outweighed them by 50 pounds a man accross the front.

On Defense, I thought we looked formidable and dominant at times in the first 2 games.

Central Michigan has a very good offensive line and QB. These units are better than their Suth Carlina counterparts, though the Gamecks have better receivers and running backs than Central Michigan.

We shut them down for 29 minutes in the first half, then we rushed 3 a few times when they had the ball in scoring position and it hurt us.

Our D gameplan has been plain vanilla in the first 2 contests and that is OK. However, once we start to blitz now and then, stunt, and mixup coverage… I think we will be a tough team defensively.

Spurrier’s team has no “O” offense this season, so I am calling them the Suth Carlina Gamecks.

I expect the Dawgs to roll this weekend as the Gamecks shouldn’t be able to move the ball against UGA. Their QBs has been throwing high and giving the opposition a TON of interception chances.

Suth Carlina’s running game looked anemic against NC State and Vandy for the most part.

I think we will have some trouble offensively in the first half and may only score 10 points, but will score another 17 or more in the 2nd as their D tires and we get used the speed and power of an SEC D.

I also expect us to go for it or have a fake punt when we are on their side of the field but out of field goal range after the first few series.

“Put On” shouldn’t offend the deep pocket Dawgs. I liked “Soulja Boy” but I can understand why the deep pocket Dawgs found it offensive. “Put On” is not offensive ——well minus a couple of Kanya West’s bleeped out words. Still, I really like that song.

I was inpressed with the passing game. Now that everyone is fully aware of Moreno, every team we face will be zeroing in on him. The only way we can respond to that is to keep them honest with a good passing game. MoMass stepping up this season is critical. A. J. Green’s development is also critical.

I remember feeling pretty confident going in to the South Carolina game last year too folks. Everyone needs to settle down. I know they lost to Vandy but they are not going to roll over for us and will not be intimidated. I am concerned about our offensive line handling their defensive line, especially in run situations. One thing I’ve noticed the past two games is that it takes the offense 2 or 3 plays to score in goal line situations, and this against very weak opponents. That means they are getting whipped up front. It would be nice if our running backs didn’t have to risk life and limb by jumping over the pile to score. South Carolina will be the first true test for our offensive line. I, quite frankly, am nervous.

On another note, I am surprised at what little is being said about Spurrier’s comments after last year’s game. Apparently an excessive celebration penalty is huge motivation for Florida, but Spurrier flat out saying we suck doesn’t have a similar effect on Georgia. Maybe its just early in the week.

By AltamahaDawg

Very few teams can just bunch it up and slam it up the middle on the goal line every time. That’s not unusual to take a couple of shots at it. We might try that again and punch it it right away next time. But when needing to go ahead and score on 3rd down, all it took was one simple shift to the left and no problem. I’m going to guess, against SC if we are on the 1 yrd line, we aren’t going to try to “work on” anything, we are going to run a play to score.

And we will have a better situation at FB later in the year.

Bob

I echo your sentiments about the confidence going into SC last year. However, I see it this year as well deserved. The Dawgs need and have the confidence for a beat down in Columbia. The Old Bawl Sack’s reputation of old is worn out and tired. He hasn’t got a team to line up and beat Georgia with and he knows it. Hence his silence.

He’s out of tricks and smoke and mirrors won’t work for them this year. Carolina has no offense and only a mediocre defense. It would appear the one play maker in McKinley is most likely out as well. They have no depth any where.

NC ST is a bottom rung team in the middle of rebuilding and Vandy is always going to be Vandy. They’ll beat anyone on a given day and still end up in the cellar. They lined up and pounding SC in the mouth and they could do anything about it. Georgia will do much of the same and add an offensive explosion.

The Dawgs look good and I am confident this coming week, the Old Bawl Sack gets his due.

last year’s Suth Carlina team was competitive, they were physical and came to play (especially early in the season)… they rose to a top 10 ranking and they were playing like it before the wheels came off late.

This year, their defense looks good, but certainly not so dominant that we can’t score some points this week.

Bob, this is the worst offense that Spurrier has ever coached, even considering the Duke teams.

They may score, they may even move the ball a little, but if we can’t routinely stop the Gamecks this year, then we are going to have to score a BUNCH of points this season, and I mean a BUNCH

Dawg fans…if you think Florida opened up its offense against Hawaii and Miami, think again. You have not seen 1/3 of Florida’s offensive…or the use of the speed weapons they have. You will see it in the Tennessee game. Also, I am not hearing much negative about the Florida D anymore. I told you in early summer about how good the Gator D would be this year. It is even better than I thought it would be. DEs Dunlap (3 sacks against Miami) and Cunningham (player of the week in the SEC this week by the way) are fast (Dunlap is extemely big and extemely fast) enough to run down any RB or QB on the outside, and the DL of Marsh, Sanders, Pathchan and company, along with Spikes, are quick and strong enough to shut down almost everything on the inside. The maturity of Haden, Pierre-Louis, and Wright at CB and FS is very obvious. Plus, Ahmad Black is a monster so far at SS (Will Hill can’t beat him out). He covers and tackles well and knocks your head off when you do catch the ball over the middle. Oh, and there is this freshman named Janoris Jenkins (nickel back) that also shuts down almost everything thrown his way. The Gators and the Dawgs will be undefeated when they play in Jax. I am praying so, anyway. What a game that will be! The winner then plays USC (after they kill Ohio State…who hasn’t?) for the NC. Go Gators and Go Dawgs…make my dream come true, please.

After watching the replay, I was surprised how much better they played than I had originally felt watching it live.

Except for maybe a half dozen times, we never lined up in anything but a 4 man rush and did get a lot of pressure up the middle. I am confident we have a bit more than that in the works.

The O line was awfully athletic. Most of those long runs were guards pulling and taking out DB. And Stafford had all day long back there to pass. All day.

A few folks had said they had difficulties punching it in. It seems so, BUT There were 3 series that came down to a goal and close. One in the second quarter, pass for 2, King for 3 and King scored. The next series was the one that looked like the line got stuffed, but actually KM first carry, there was a huge hole he just didnt get there, he looked like he got triped up. On second down it did bottle up bad time, before shifting left for the third down and scoring. The only other goal line case was in the 3rd and we punched it in on first shot.

I’m not sure that game could have gone any better. Did what they wanted, didn’t show a thing, and just enough mistakes that the coaching staff shouldnt have any problem keeping them grounded.

My fellow Georgia fans, remember the old coaches cliche that things are never as good as they seem. We have not played anyone. I am optimistic, but only cautiously so.

I think our offensive line needs to be more physical. All that sweeping and pulling is great, but at some point they are going to have to line up and smack some folks in the mouth for us to get the W. And the secondary has simply had too many breakdowns the past two games for my liking. They have got to play alot better. Special teams has got to step it up too. Walsh probably cost us a touchdown Saturday. That could mean the difference between winning and losing in SEC play. I’ve seen some decent punt and kick returns but certainly nothing spectacular against two weak opponents.

Maybe this is nitpicking but we’re gunning for the top prize. Success is in the details. Go Dawgs and here’s to an early retirement for Spurrier. I hope we have that punk wishing he was on the golf course by the start of the 4th quarter.

Steve Spurrier threw out a few quips and one startlingly honest barb the day after his South Carolina team beat Georgia, 16-12. “It wasn’t like they were some big, powerful team,” Spurrier said on his television show Sunday. “They’ve actually lost five in a row to Eastern Division opponents. Kentucky and Vandy beat ‘em last year.”

I’m with you friend. I thought it was a good game and a good showing and not too revealing. Kiante Tripp is going to fill the Sturdivant void just fine. He displayed some brute strength and some awesome power.

Running it up the gut on the goal line is a 50/50 venture as best. Nothing to be concerned with on the OL. A few early season mistakes but I’m seeing them jell.

The same with the DL. The 4 man front kept one very prolific QB at bay. I thought coverage was a bit soft in the middle but as you say they’ll have something to work on and keep them honest.

All in all a very good effort with much of the weapons never leaving the barn. It’s GREAT to be a GEROGIA BULLDOG!!!!

SC scoring any more than 10 pts. against ANYONE is a stretch. They have a great defense, but their offense seems to be running in mud. Three QB’s and not a good passer amongst them. It will still be a slugfest as it always is, but our best is MUCH better than their best.

If SC plays like they did against Vandy the Dawgs will chew them up. Spurrier and Co. have looked bad in both of their games. Don’t care where the game is played, SC better step it up or they will get stepped on. Dawgs have looked sharp, could be a blowout. I also agree, if Spurrier has another losing season, he is out of there.
