Not bad for August
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, so after going up 38-0 on a day so hot and muggy that even some of the Coke boys and girls were probably cramping, and with the coaching staff throwing lots of second- and third-stringers into the game, the Dawgs relaxed a bit, got a little tired and sloppy, and let the boys from Statesboro score three second-half touchdowns.
Georgia’s debut might not have made quite the statement that 45-0 or 45-7 would have, but it’s not the cause for alarm it would have been if the game’s outcome ever had been in question or if those scores had been made early against the starters. And part of the problem was that the Georgia offense’s quick-strike capability tended to leave the defense on the field for an awful long time.
Still, I can’t imagine any Dawg fans leaving Sanford Stadium Saturday who weren’t impressed and encouraged by the talent and flashes of brilliance shown on offense (from both veterans and first-time players) and the lights-out play of the defense for most of the first three quarters. Yes, there were too many penalties, particularly offsides calls (especially on defense). But it was the first game. If that continues over the next couple of games, then it’ll be a problem. And yes, a few passes were overthrown, underthrown or dropped. But with Matt Stafford completing 62 percent for a career-high 275 yards, it seems a bit churlish to make much of that complaint.
Actually, the only thing the Bulldog Nation really had cause to gripe about Saturday was the bad luck that saw another of our strongest players lost for the season to injury. And there’s not much Mark Richt and his staff can do about that.
No, Georgia didn’t play a perfect game. But considering the Dawgs weren’t playing one of those much-touted openers like Boise State or Oklahoma State, they looked pretty much where you’d expect them to be in the first game. Next week should be a bit more of a challenge; I get the feeling the Dawgs will rise to it.
AMONG THE GOOD THINGS WE SAW SATURDAY: Word had leaked out of practice last week that freshman kicker Blair Walsh was having a little groin problem, but you couldn’t tell it from the way he kicked Saturday. I loved that he put his first kickoff in the end zone, though after that he bent to his coaches’ will and went for those directional kicks into the corner. … Good feeling having that depth at tailback. Richard Samuel may have fumbled on his first play, but he turned in some slashing good runs in the first half. And how about that Caleb King weaving in and out of the Eagles defense as he racked up 95 yards in the second half. … Giving Joe Cox planned playing time in the first half is a wise move on Richt’s part. The more experience he has, the better off we’ll be in the long run. Cox had a nice run negated by a flag. And third-stringer Logan Gray got a couple of chances to show the added running dimension he’ll bring to QB. … Stafford to A.J. Green. Get used to the sound of it, because we’re going to hear that a lot. But some of the old hands also looked good, with Kris Durham pulling in that 61-yarder for a score and one of Mo Mass’ three catches being one of his patented acrobatic snags. And what a weapon Georgia has in throwing to Knowshon out of the backfield!
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: The Dawgs’ kickoff coverage continues to be spotty, with Southern getting a 45-yard return one time when they hit the seam. … Tackling was a bit ragged at times. … Need to cut out the offsides penalties. … Not enough pressure on the Southern QBs. That definitely needs to change this next week.
More on the Sanford fan scene later in the week.

it was a practice game bill, we won the scrimmage, how serious could we have taken them considering joe cox was in on the third series of the game and a true freshman tailback got a look in the first half….central michigan will be a better test…we best not take them lightly….they’d probably be a double digit favorite over clemson

I’m sorry, but Jon Fabris is an idiot if he doesn’t allow his kicker to kick touchbacks.
How many times last year, or in the previous years, have we seen this idiotic “corner kicking” backfire and lead to long returns, or to put it succinctly, returns beyond the 20 yard line?
Why, especially when it gets to Bammy, Tennessee, and Florida, would you even think of messing with SEC caliber kick returners, who can bust long returns all day long, when you can ensure they start from the 20 EVERY FRAKKING TIME!!!
This is a ridonkulous coaching decision that I can only remember really working in our favor once, against LSU in 2004.
Otherwise, it always seems like the other team is starting from the 35 against us.
Why do we give up those 15 yards, when Walsh can make it so they’re at the 20, every time?
No other special teams coaching staff does this. No other ST Coordinator is this stupid.

I was happy with the win, but I would expect Kentucky or Vandy to beat GA Southern 45-21. I was dissapointed with the lack of focus and the fans leaving early. This didn’t happen at UF where they were in process of beating a much better team in a much worse fashion. I fear we are in for a huge dissapointment this season (9-3).

biggest thing that bothered me was the d line. supposed to have arguably the best dtackle combo in the nation and i didn’t see quite the push or dominance in the middle that i expected. i was expecting to see dominance on the level of south carolina’s d and usc’s. also, no rush from our ends. whatsoever.

I didn’t leave early, but I can guess why some fans might have. It was beyond hot out there yesterday. I know it was bad on the field, but it was certainly no picnic up in those 600 level stands, with the sun bearing down and no relief in sight.
Bill, good summary. I’m actually looking forward to seeing how we respond to the challenge next week against Central Mich. Need to stay focused, and not look ahead. They can work on the defensive issues and penalties in practice this week. I expect to see improvement in the next game. Will be good to get Clint Boling back from suspension, but I applaud the O-line and their efforts.

It was great to see Blair Walsh kicking so well right off the bat. I am worried about the penalties and the injuries. then again, good teamms have enough depth to handle an injury. Oh well, we could be tOSU. I’d be surprised if his MRI doesn’t reveal ligament damage of some kind.

Herschel, read the information at the top of the page about Bill King. He is a Fan, does not claim to be an Expert. If Blair Walsh did have a bit of a groin problem, that explains why he kicked directional kicks most of the game. This game was no indication, good or bad, of what is to come. It is impossible to gauge what Georgia will do from here on out. Just a few errors can undo the whole Season. If you don’t make those errors, you win them all. Unfortunately, we will make errors. it just depends on when they happen. Look at the Va. Tech-East Carlina Game. East Carolina would block that kick, one out of 1000 times. Reguardless of how Va. Tech played, they most likely would have won the Game, had not the kick been blocked. Just little things can kill you. A missed block, dropped pass, a fumble, the wind, the rain, stupidity, anything can cause you to lose or win, reguardless of your talent level.

Hey Meathead.. You were right, it was hot and muggy…very…I was there. Which is why this quote makes no friggin’ sense at all: “Dawgs relaxed a bit, got a little tired and sloppy, and let the boys from Statesboro score three second-half touchdowns”. In the second half, Georgia Southern was playing with the same guys that were on the field in the first half. Your second halfers were standing in front of a fan, sucking down Powerade for two hours, hoping they would be able to get on the field in front of 92,000 and prove their worth. If they 1et Georgia Southern score, then I’d be worried about my future if I were you. Especially since the balance of age and experience was equalized when your 4 and 5 star recruits took the field.
Typical Dawg logic. BTW, USC crossed the country and beat a 1-A team much worse. “Letting” GSU score those three TD’s will probably cost you your #1 ranking. That will be a moot point by November anyway.

Richt said late last month that he was concerned with the lack of heat in practice. I was at the game as well, and it was great to see them in action, but that heat would wear anyone out.
We NEVER should have let 21 get on the board. Auburn scored 20 last year, remember. I know that Willie will get them up to speed this week, it will all be fine.
Thoughts for the upcoming weeks: SC is going to be a very tough game. Dont buy BAMA yet, Clemson made them look better than they are. TN will beat FL.

I too am not quite ready to buy ‘BAMMA just yet. Clemson DID NOT show up for work. Have no clue why, but they didn’t. If it weren’t for the opening kickoff return of the 2d half, it would have REALLY looked ugly. Little Bowden needs to take a long look in the mirror. I know from family closely associated with Clemson U. that everyone LIKES Bowden, but is rapidly becoming disgruntled with the failure to show up in critical games that seem to hold the program back. When players/employees fail to show up for work it is the task of coaches/management to take corrective action. To be sure, was impressed with ‘BAMMA. Their intensity from HC Saban on down was great. That’s what it takes to be successful.

Its tough to be #1. If UGA had won 60-0 some would complain. Its hard for a team to get up for a game like this. You substitute for 2nd and 3rd team players as quickly as you can to give them experience. You don’t show your best because you’re saving it for the beasts you’re playing later in the season. You try unproven plays to see if they can work and some won’t. You experiment. You try players in new positions to see if they can perform there.

TOBY CASH who said GSU could not play? Any UGA fan knows that they play hard and have talent. That being said GSU could have easily been blanked had we not played so many first time players. Considering the injury issues we are have and I am sure we will continue to have, I think it was a great idea to get those guys involved. Thought AJ Green looked good as did Richard Samuel. Honestly, I dont think we will know what we have till we play Arizona St. and South Carolina. Eventhough I missed the whole second quarter standing in the concession stand for water any Sat. in Athens is a good day. Concentrate on the points we scored not what GSU scored. HBTD

First off, great job dawgs. We did a great job Saturday. GSU couldn’t move the ball on us. I wish I could’ve been there but I had to work. Thankfully we had a radio in the truck playing the game.
We ran a simple game plan. We’ll do the same thing next week & we’ll win 45-21 & what ill you say then? We stomped them and let the backups get some playing time. That is good since we’re hurt on the line.

Does anyone remember that is was 38-0 before GSU scored. I was to busy at the time talking with a couple of cute girls, heard some cheers and thought we had scored again. Turns out it was the GSU fans in the bar. I turned to the one closest to me and congradutlated their score. He thanked me but admitted that they would not win the game, they were playing for pride. Getting those 21 points for them can make a difference when GSU plays for their conference. Good luck Eagles the rest of the year.
Techies, here is hoping that your team takes it to the ACC this year. I think you have as good a chance as any other team. Johnson’s spread seems to be working. Johnson’s spread, sounds like something you would find in the dairy section.

The game on Saturday was a scrimmage and nothing more. GSU scored 21 points in the 2nd half against UGA’s backups, freshmen, and walkons. If you want to nitpick about the final score, go ahead. UGA played a very very vanilla gameplan, hardly blitzed at all, played a LOT of freshmen early and often…and shut out GSU in the first half, limiting them to 88 total yards in that time. UGA averaged 9 yards per play FOR THE GAME. If you want to gripe about that, go ahead. You might want to wait until we play a team that we even bother to gameplan for first though

Also, according to the information I have the Dawgs had only 145 more yards total offense than the Eagles.

It is a shame that we lost Jeff, but someone else is just going to have to step up. I am concerned about our tackling especially on defense. It looked as though most of our secondary was tentative when coming up to make a tackle. Also, my beloved Dawgs must keep their killer instinct for 4 quarters. Lastly, Stafford showed signs of brilliance, but at times, resorted back to bad mechanics (throwing off of his back foot). I hope Bobo addresses this issue, so Stafford will get the elusive 300 yard game. CMR please keep the intensity level high. Go Dawgs!!!!

Definitely some bright spots. However, I don’t care that UGA had their 3rd stringers in there, Ga. Southern should not score more than about 10 points (at most) against us. They had their benchwarmers in there too!
Also, there is no way that you can lose your best players on both sides of the ball and not be affected. The loss of both Owens and Sturdivant is going to be very apparent as soon as we play the big boys. Just wait and see.

All this against a Ga Southern team that won’t win half their games this year.

To all the bull*ers on this blog. *Hell yes, I am p** off! The Dawgs did the right thing. The reward for that good deed was dropping out of first place. A small price to pay for spotsmanship. The USC’s and Ohio State’s of the world play their starters to achieve team and personal statistics. Scoring 60 points against an overmatched rival is unnecessary. Unless, of course, an SEC team (pick one) does so against Ohio State in a bowl game. Then 100 F*G points are not only acceptable but greatly appreciated.* It is not fair to a team like Georgia which has six or seven tough games on the schedule to be penalized for a win when USC has one or two quality opponents while Ohio State has one. One-game seasons get you massacred when the other squad is not a girl school or academy for the blind. Right Buckeyes? On a personal note. I watched Robert Toomer as a Worth County Ram runner in Sylvester. The talented runner could have had twice the yardage had he been left in against inferior opponents. Such was not the case. Sportsmanship prevailed. So FK USC! FK Ohio State! FK the pollsters. FK candyass bloggers who rejoice in Dawg demotion. The right thing is the right thing. The Dawgs did the right thing. What is that saying about nice guys? So FK all California and Ohio converts!* UGA may not go undefeated in the toughest conference in the land. They may not get to play for a mythical national title. I still believe they would fold, spindle and mutilate USC and Ohio State. Without a doubt! GO DAWGS!

Dude, get some help. UGA is not in the class with USC, OU or UF, or not even close. UGA has not played for a national title in 27 years (PSU) and lost that one to Blackledge and Warner.
Get a life and understand that UGA is destined to lose 3-4 games this year, because CMR will not keep the team focused, and Moreno is full of himself as with the rest of the dogs.
Until you realize that CMR is laughing all the way to the bank and keeps your appetite just wet enough for another raise, you will continue to compensate and over-rated coach in an over-rated program.
The reason Moreno got no exposure for his so called “leap, is ESPN does not respect your program and knows it is overrated.
Drilling CM or GSU does not get you style points. You will most likely lose to USC, LSU, UA and UF, which are superior programs with superior athletes and superior tactical planning.
I just wonder how many Doggie suppporters will be here trying to find excuses when you drop out of the top-ten.
