Between the Hedges!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Finally, it’s time, as Sanford Stadium announcer Brook Whitmire says, to tee it up betweeeeen the hedges!
After the summer’s silly season of speculation over whether Georgia would top the pre-season rankings and spending August lamenting a rash of injuries (including a key loss for the season), debating who’ll be the backup tailback, salivating over teammates’ estimations of freshman receiver A.J. Green, fretting about whether Knowshon Moreno should receive punts, and worrying how Matthew Stafford will be able to operate behind a revamped and mostly green offensive line, I’m more than ready to head over to Athens early Saturday morning. There’s nothing like hearing that trumpet solo in the Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation for the first time each season! I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
It’s a shame, in a way, that the first home game is one of those 12:30 affairs since that forces fans to condense their pre-game tailgating into more or less a rushed brunch, but if the Dawgs take care of business the way they’re expected to, there should be plenty of time to sit back and reflect on the day afterward before hitting the road back home.
Heading into the game, most UGA fans are confident of the outcome but concerned over whether the Bulldogs will take Georgia Southern seriously enough. Thanks to Appalachian State and Michigan last year, I don’t think there’s much danger of Georgia getting caught napping. But what I would like to see, as I alluded to recently, is the Dawgs dispatching one of their lesser opponents in the manner befitting a Top 5 team. I know the coaches want to let a lot of players get some game experience, but let’s face it, winning by anything less than three touchdowns is going to be considered an off-day for Stafford, Moreno and Co.
I’m not saying we should run up the score to ridiculous levels the way the Gators and Sooners and some other schools do (I doubt you’ll ever see Mark Richt do that), but Georgia needs to make a statement Saturday that it intends to tear through this landmine of a schedule with determination and, yes, a bit of a swagger. The benefits of the mindset after last year’s celebration penalty against the Gators should be obvious to all.
So, go Dawgs … win it BIG!
BULLDOG BITES: Speaking of Brook Whitmire, he ought to get a royalty off sales of this season’s new black rally towel, which features his famous phrase along with the Georgia “G.” As a longtime proponent of using both Georgia’s team colors, I like the continued emphasis on black. By the way, if you choose to buy those towels through Georgiadogs.com, you’ll pay $7.95 apiece (!) compared with the $5 price at retail outlets in Athens. And the first 20,000 fans into the stadium Saturday will get a smaller version for free. … Breakfast With the Dawgs will take place at the Melting Point in Athens the Friday morning before each Georgia home football game. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. A buffet breakfast will be served and the guest speaker will begin around 8:30 a.m. and end around 9, just in time to get to work. Parking is free and available on site. Coach Richt is the speaker for this week’s breakfast. Tickets can be purchased online via www.georgiadogs.com or www.meltingpointathens.com. Tickets for this first kick-off breakfast are $15 and admission for all others will be $12. … WGCL, Atlanta’s CBS affiliate (and home of Dagmar Midcap), is going red and black Friday, including a special hourlong “Dawg Pep Rally Show” at 8 p.m.

I agree with the need to make a “Statement Win” without sacrificing Richt’s style.
Regardless, I’m about to Freak out it’s so close.
Also has anyone heard the plan yet for UGA VII’s debut? Timing, etc.?

So Bill, I guess we can chalk you up as yet another alum who could give a crap about that greedy SOB Michael Adams and his Puppet, Damon Evans, screwing the student body out of the tickets they DESERVE?
Explain this to me Bill: How is it that Florida has 17,000 MORE STUDENTS than UGA, a stadium that seats 7,000 less people, yet ALL of their students are able to get tickets if they want them?
Explain this to me, Bill, because you’re a smart guy.
Explain how Florida can do this for their students and still make plenty of money as an athletic department, yet our beloved school, her greedy SOB President and his AD Puppet claim that they screw students out of tickets because of “increased demand,” which makes no sense, because there’s ALWAYS been a demand.
Explain to me, Bill, how the Wine & Cheesers on the South Side help create a home field advantage that is amongst the WORST in the SEC, yet Adams and Evans can’t seem to put it together, that if they actually allowed the 25,000 or so students who actually want tickets to be able to get them, that the home field advantage would then swing to one of the best.
Explain to me how the second biggest stadium in the SEC has the LOWEST percentage of students sitting in it compared to enrollment size.
Explain to me why the AJC and concerned Dawg fans everywhere aren’t doing anything about this.
Because God knows, the Administration on North Campus doesn’t give a crap about the students they purport to serve, don’t listen to any of our concerns, and generally continue to step all over our student rights, one of which is the ability to buy tickets to all sporting events.
Huh. In college, a college STUDENT, yet not able to watch sporting events featuring STUDENT ATHLETES.
It just doesn’t sit right.
It’s wrong, it’s hypocritical, and it comes down to nothing more than greed.
And, oh yeah, it hurts the team. Why do you think they play better on the road? Because our alumni SUCK!!!

I couldn’t disagree more. If Georgia starts getting wrapped up in style points and blowing people out we are going to be in trouble. It may not bite us against GSU but you can bet it will at some point down the line. They need to focus on the little things that help you win instead of trying to knock one out of the park everytime they step on the field. That is what everyone refers to when they speak of getting “wrapped up in the hype”. It is a dangerous mentality and a recipe for failure.
We don’t have to worry about style points. With the lofty ranking and the schedule Georgia without a doubt controls its own destiny. The worst that can happen is they bump us back to #2 after the Ohio State/USC game. Whoopdeedoo. Who cares. If we take care of business and win our games we’ll be in the final top 2 of the BCS standings. There is absolutely no doubt about it. None. Zilch. Zero.
What top 5 teams do is win. That is all Georgia needs to worry about.

got to say it, i’m not a fan of the towels. they’re just a stupid marketing ploy, and i don’t think any real UGA fan should be waving a hand towel over their head during a game. it’s lame.
we don’t need manufactured enthusiasm, we’ve got a great team, so let’s just get it done on the field.

“UGA needs a statement”? LOL. I think you azz holes have made more than enough “statements” here since being wrongly selected preseason #1 (1 point higher than the real number 1 team-THE Ohio State Buckeyes). I think it’s time for Georgia and it’s fans to “put up or shut up”.
And, if UGA finishes the season at number 1, I will fly back down and spend an entire weekend with PBR and Mountain Dawg (and any nancy boy that wants to join us) in the Georgia mountains. Moonshine and Hot dog handshakes all weekend long. On me.

Winning big is important if you want to keep the #1 ranking and impress everyone, but all we really want is a “W” and to build some depth. With the monster schedule in front of them do we really care where they are ranked?
The goal is to be ranked in the top ten and make it to the SEC championship game. SEC champ is the only destiny that is decided on the field and within their control.

I’m less of a fan of the “i am Georgia” phrase and much more of a fan of “Finish the Drill”. The Finish the Drill slogan was used a lot in the first couple of years but seems to have taken a back seat to some of the other crap people are pushing now.
If we win by 21 and lots of people get to play and nobody gets hurt, then I don’t think you could ask for anything better

Bill, Stop b!tching about the early tee time. Jim Beam and Jack Daniels don’t complain. Matter of fact they are early risers and have no problem getting ready for a 12:30 kickoff. You might want to give them a call. Good game would be Stafford for 300 yrds 3 TD’s, Moreno for 150 and 2 TD’s. We don’t need style points, we need a solid effort and to control the game like a top 5 team should. GSU will be ready to play for sure. Go Dawgs!

To the Black Knight (aka The Ohio State Buckeyes), still talking your trash? When is the next Monty Python movie coming out? Will you be appearing again as the Black Knight? You know, all mouth, no action. Here’s your regular dosage of reality:
OSU = 0-13 versus the SEC OSU = losing bowl record overall OSU = fewer bowls than UGA, fewer bowl wins than UGA, more bowl losses than UGA.
Go talk your big trash to the other Big 10 wimp schools who are used to losing to you. Leave the big time to the big boys.

Forget the image! Richt is a nice but who gets all the credit for being a great coach these days? Urban Meyer, who would put up 100 points on anyone if he could. Steve Spurrier was always thought of as a genuius by the guys at ESPN, not a jerk. Richt needs to put up 50 plus on GSU this weekend and the defense needs to hold them to under 10. I’d like the averages to be about 45 points for the offense and about 10 for the defense going into Arizona State. This team is capable if Richt turns them loose.

Until then, you need to get ready for USC because that’s the only REAL team you’ll play this year (until you play us). I hope you guys win because I would love to see UGA as the third straight SEC team to beat the crap out of you for the title. It’s time to let the dawgs have some!

Now that GSU has suspended their first team for violating team rules…this game should be over by the end of the 1st Quarter (28-0 or so). UGA should easily score 60+ points even if no 1st team players play past halftime. Don’t try to tell me Georgia’s third team is not superior to a depleted Georgia Southern 1st team.

Bill-Cut out the big score talk, please. Coach Richt will play his game and if that includes not running up the score, then so be it. The Dawgs coaches are not in some insane contest to stay #1, rather they are representing my University in the manner in which they were hired, not for participating in a media contest. If we are considered not to be #1 by not racking an embarrassing score on a team that is disadvantaged because they choose to place team discipline ahead of winning, then let’s be ranked lower. It’s a beauty contest and we are considered as having the best team in America at this point. That’s all. Ranking us less because we choose good sportsmanship is someone else’s problem, not ours. Do you have any idea what you are advocating? Winning BIG and making a”statement”against GSU is demeaning to both our programs. Already bloggers are comparing and admiring Spurrier for what he chose to do. That has nothing to do with our program.
Where did you go to college? Would you like the alums of your school to consider what you learned about sportsmanship as you propose and suggest here is reflective of the school you attended? If you went to UGA, then shame on you and you do not reflect the values I learned at UGA, football or no football. You writers often say that the game of football is about life lessons learned at an early age. Soon enough they will learn about the a’holes without giving them a crash course in bad ethics and enjoining them to copy those with lesser values. Stop it already. You guys need someone to groom your stories so that you don’t unknowingly encourage smack talk like you have encouraged mine. Look, we know you guys write for a living , but why don’t you get together and compare notes on the best you have written from the heart and note the writers that have been surprised at the accolades instead of purposely achieving them. I’ll bet you will be surprised to find out that they were surprised. There are writers that I’ve read through the years in your paper and in sports generally who carried the day and stayed in my mind for years. These writers may have written not so good stuff at other times, but those uplifting stories stay with you for years. Ralph McGill and Furman Bisher come to mind. Why don’t you request a guest writer like Bill Curry to chip in once in a while? He’s in Atlanta now. His last article that I read in ESPN last year concerned a personal journey through football practice that he remembered from years earlier.
In summary, I apologize for smack talk toward you. It is meant for all of you.
Last year and at least part of this year will be one of the most enjoyable years for college football ever. How about an uplifting article on the character of players and coaches (that seems to occur infrequently) that goes in depth as to their aspirations for themselves and fellow players. That is what makes a team, not a W/L score which reflects nothing. I want to know about this team we now say is the best team in America. Soon enough it will no longer be #1.
We wish our Dawgs the best in their wonderful undertaking this year and hope their character will be borne out on the field. I think they are up to it. Sic’em Dawgs!

GATORZONE, You very well may be right on that “playing down” to the competition. It definitely happened the last couple of years against Vandy and KY. SC last year was definitely one of those games. Although Bobo was new at the OC position and didn’t know better. I think the chances of “playing down” are a lot less this year than in years past. The biggest reason is Moreno and his attitude day in and day out. Plus Stafford has gained a ton of confidence and can get those game winning drives when needed. Of course I hope we don’t need them against Vandy, SC or KY. Last year was one of those growth year that changed the program. Our schedule is BRUTAL, injuries will dictate how the season ends up. Gotta stay focused game by game.
GATOR_world… it isn’t reversed, it didn’t happen for you. It still haunts him to this day, his dreams and that endless highlight reel that is running through his head. LMAO! Play was under review at that and could have been easily reversed. But the WHOLE team went out there celebrated then kicked off from the freakin 8 yard line to the mighty Gators. Like giving you guys an easy 7 points. Then Stafford gave you seven points. Two touchdown gift from your friends at UGA. I wonder what Urban has planned this year? I believe that the Dawgs will play according to the morals and virtues that coach Richt posses. After all he(CMR)is the “conductor of the orchestra”. I would like to see the Dawgs win big as much as anyone else, but I rather see the Dawgs win with an attitude of grace, and not so much as use GSU as cannon fodder per se by running up a score just to prove that we can beat a lesser oppenet into the ground. Nothing is more uglier than to pound a lesser opponet’s nose in the ground. What we need to do, is to get the less experienced guys some valubale game experience. If by half time the score is more than 28 points, let the less experienced guys(2nd, 3rd string) do their thing on the field. If by chance the less experienced guys run over them, then all the better. The team still has a bit of fine tunning to do. Use these next 2 games to address that. Save the pounding for more worthier opponets like USC, ASU, ALA, TENN. FLA, AUBURN, GA TECH. With these opponets we can make a profound statement, and have it mean alot more, rather than pounding a lesser team for some poll ranking.

Gator WORLD. The team prefers to call it a misunderstanding. But if you want to call it stupid, I’ll take stupid, the WIN and the “G” Richt branded on Urban Meyers soul for all eternity.

Is that like when Uga players get arrested they prefer to call it “police picking on football players?” And I’m sure Urban’s national championship matters more to him than anything Richt could ever do. Or in Uga’s case, WISH to do!

LB:
You should re-evaluate your knowledge of college football. UGA is lucky to catch GSU in a rebuilding year?? No GSU is lucky that UGA will pay them the exorbitant amount of money to have the pleasure of playing in a big time D-1 atmosphere. I am a fan of GSU, and of UGA, and there is no way that Southern would ever stand a chance against UGA, whatever they are ranked. I understand what it is to be a fan, but maybe you need to understand what it’s like to live in reality.

currently the dawgs are #1…regardless of the criticism..voted that way by the coaches no less…if you other teams’ fans are so concerned or jealous then please leave and go back to cleveland or california or new york(florida)same difference as most gator fans are dumb yankees with degrees in rudeness and no class….as for richt and the celebration…big deal what matters is the score which goes down in the record books for ever..not with a footnote about the celebration….as for tech fans they are a non-issue..we just flick bumble bees with our hands…when your fight song sounds like a monkey grinding machine with a defective sound system you really can’t take their football team seriously….leave the georgia blog you nerds…there’s a chess tournament at the varsity tonight to celebrate the beginning of the fall semester at the trade school…sounds like a fun pep rally

Seems there are quite a few UGA detractors that keep wanting to dwell on some of the mishaps UGA players done in the off season, and not FOCUS on the fact that their team has to dealt with the DAWGS. It should be remembered that ALL college teams have had their fair share of off field incidents. I only mention one particular incident that occured on a florida player, taking a dead girls credit card and going on a shopping spree. To say that UGA players are the only ones to committ criminal acts is ridiculous, and absurd. I do not believe there were any sentances invloving incareration, not unlike that florida player. I am sure there are players from florida, ohio state, and other univesersities that have created far more agregious crimes and have been sentenanced. To all detractors that keep chirping about how awful UGA players are, let the games deterime how that will be Soon enough you will stop posting on this board. Urban cryer, uhh I meant Meyer (Gainesvile’s biggest wiener, uh whiner) certainly is far less in stature and integrity than coach Richt.

Black Knight (aka the ohio state buckeyes), so Wells is the early favorite to win the Heisman? Is this the same Wells who was on the past two teams that were destroyed by SEC teams in the NC? Last years Heisman winner led his team to a 9-4 record. Ho hum.
You might find this interesting. Drew Sharp is a sportswriter for the USA Today and the Detroit Free Press. He had an article today about the uncertainty of this years Michigan team. He says, and I’m quoting, Yet, it’s risky guaranteeing impending Michigan doom this season, because it still plays in the Big Ten, and the Big Ten remains the most overrated conference in college football. People in the South know it and people throughout the country know it. Looks like you’re an army of one.

Here Hear
In 2006, Florida faced the BIG 5, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Alleydamnbammy. Beat UT by 1, UGA by 7. Beat ol’ Kentuck, Vandy and the Gameglocks by 1. Lost to Auburn and beat the Razorpigs in the SECCG and OSU for the BCS Championship. Conference schedule was for them in ‘06 what the schedule is for UGA in ‘08, exceptions being some Home and Away games. The SEC is a field of landmines each and every Saturday. If you step on one or two, the Crystal Football is still there for the taking providing, as history shows, you get the win in the SECCG. In 2007, I picked the Dawgs to win the East. SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!! This year I’ll help ya’ll along. I’m picking UT to win the East ( AGAIN ) in 2008…Go Vols

Like Oledawg said, this game has gotten away from good ole fashioned football to a bunch of politics. Please remember most of these are just kids who are trying to get an education along with the promise of maybe carrying out their own goal of maybe making it big someday. They have enough on their table of academics, let alone trying to get out there and establish a name for themselves on the football field. So let our coach CMR do the work and it will show for all the Bulldawg Nation to witness. Do we really talk about running the score up against an inferior opponent ? Should we try and establish some continuity on the oline ? Really, it shouldnt be about how many points you win by, but how you played the game to win.

77 dawg I think you are the wisest of all. Who can’t run up the score and who cares about THAT message, BUT a shut out or as low as possible makes plenty of message that can’t be considered any sort of a classless insult. That being said, I’d rather play some of the youngsters. Nobody is not going to understand (voters), that the score slipped a bit late against the third string. I’m not sure anyone is going to be impressed with a team that says we kept our starters in to prove something on the opening day against D1AA. Willing to empty the bench is also a pretty good statement of talent depth.
Just look sharp for first half, which is the last time the rest of the country is going to care about this one, and work on whatever we need to for the remainder.

It is amazing that the same Georgia fans who decry others on their blogs will invade other teams blogs. I admire Coach Richt’s character and how he simply wants his team to win, not run up the score against a seriously overmatched opponent. The main item for Georgia should be to win without getting anyone seriously injured. Although Georgia is not my team, I do like to see Georgia do well. In fact, one could easily be a casual Bulldog fan if if were not for the obnoxious Georgia fans.

Maddog, I am not an OSU fan, I know too many Michigan fans for that. But Chris Wells is the real deal at TB. The only problem I have with him is his nickname “Beanie”? You can’t put that on the Heisman can you? I mean WTF? Beanie. And he doesn’t need the OSU line he would be productive everywhere.
