Back to dear old Athenstown
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I always enjoy visits to my hometown, but especially this time of year when football season is so close you can practically smell the bourbon and barbecue on Lumpkin Street.
I spent a few days over in the Classic City this past week visiting with the folks and helping get my son moved into his new place for his last year as a UGA grad student. And while over there, my daughter and I hit a number of favorite Athens spots, including the UGA Book Store for Bulldog regalia and school supplies (the No. 7 black jerseys are back in stock, though outnumbered about 3-1 by the No. 24s); Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, where we picked up the 2008 football poster, which features both the red and black jerseys (and we saw some of the players, including freshmen who’d gotten on the bad side of an upperclassman’s razor); and the soda fountain at Hodgson’s Pharmacy in Five Points, where I got to chat with my lifelong friend Hal Hodgson. We missed our old downtown haunt Barnett’s Newsstand (now a dress shop) but had lunch with my brother Jon at the reconstituted Allen’s, now on Hawthorne across from the Athens YMCA. And we got caught in the usual Milledge traffic jams that accompany students moving in before classes start on Monday and sorority rush.
While we were having lunch at The Grill downtown, one of the waitresses noticed my red UGA shirt and my daughter’s red dress and asked if something special was going on at the university. Nope, just another mid-August day in Athens!
OUT ON THAT LIMB: While in Athens, the No. 1 topic of conversation usually was about our consensus No. 1 Dawgs. Confidence is high, as they say, despite the killer schedule, the big hit to the offensive line in the loss for the season of Trinton Sturdivant and how that, combined with Brannon Southerland still being out at fullback, makes Matthew Stafford’s protection a little iffy. Few fans I’ve talked with are willing to predict an undefeated season, but many feel pretty comfortable envisioning nothing worse than a one-loss season … which nowadays probably would still have Georgia in the national championship game. As my brother Tim said, if the Dawgs take care of Georgia Southern convincingly in the manner in which they should (instead of playing down to their opponent’s level and just getting by as UGA has tended to do in the past), he’ll feel a lot better out on that limb predicting no losses.
As for me, I’m like my other brother, Jon, who hates to ever pick the Dawgs to lose, but I’m realistic enough to know that most years that’s not reasonable. Last year, I predicted Georgia would go 9-3 before the bowl and they bettered that by a game. I was happy to have them prove me wrong. So I hope they do it again this year, as I’m joining those who see an 11-1 regular season record.
BULLDOG BITES: I can see the arguments for and against using star tailback Knowshon Moreno and third-string QB Logan Gray to return punts and kickoffs. In Moreno’s case, how much sense it makes might depend on how quickly his backup (whether it’s Caleb King or Richard Samuel) develops. But in the case of Gray, I think it’s a great idea, having seen him show off his impressive speed and moves during the G-Day Game. And it’s good to know the redshirt freshman is anxious to get on the field, even if he’s not taking the snap. Special teams coach Jon Fabris reportedly has other unnamed uses in mind for Gray as well, which brings to mind maybe some fake kicks. … Work continues on the garden plaza at the corner of Lumpkin and Pinecrest honoring Vince Dooley, though it’s hard to see how even the garden part is going to be finished in time for the Georgia Southern game (the statue won’t be in place until later in the season). I’d still prefer adding his name to the stadium or field, but considering Dooley’s horticultural bent, this should wind up being a nice tribute. … In addition to the First Friday festivities in Athens kicking off the football season, Aug. 29 is the fourth annual College Colors Day, on which everyone (even those misguided souls who went to other schools) is encouraged to wear their college colors throughout the day, wherever they are. Just another day for me, since I do that most of the time anyway.

I like Logan returning punts…TOO risky for Knowshon. 12-0 is a longshot with our schedule. 11-1 would be an unbelievable year. Hell, 10-2 would be a damn good year! Personally, I don’t see the Georgia Southern game being a “measuring stick” for the year. Of course, I would like to win in the 45-13 range, but I am not panicking if the game is slightly closer. I do think Central Michigan gives UGA a much tougher game. Go Dogs!

Bill,
Dooley was a good coach, but where does it end, man?
When Mark Richt wins the SEC this year and the MNC, that gives him 3 SEC titles and 1 MNC, and THREE Big Bowl wins.
Richt has already bettered Dooley’s sUGAr Bowl victories, which is shame when you think about the six SEC Championships Dooley won and he couldn’t come away with more wins in New Orleans; especially in ‘81 and ‘82.
Usually, Richt’s teams win the games they’re supposed to in Bowl Season, with one exception. Can’t say that about Dooley’s terrible bowl record.
I’m sorry, but even if Richt doesn’t win the MNC this year (we’re set up real well to win it next year… easier, more manageable schedule), he’s well on the road to being a better head coach for Georgia than Dooley was.
He’s had sustained success on a level that Dooley couldn’t possibly compete with, in an era when the SEC is fair tougher, and recruiting is so much more cut-throat.
His career winning percentage as a head coach, when you take the fact that unlike Urban Liar the Crier, he’s only ever coached in the SEC, is absolutely insane!
So you would have Dooley’s name put on the stadium when it is already become apparent that Richt will far surpass Dooley’s on the field accomplishments in that same stadium? Again, he’s already doubled him up in sUGAr Bowl victories!
Come on, Bill. Dooley was a very good coach. Mark Richt is a great coach.
If anyone’s name is going anywhere near that stadium, I hope one day, about 20 years from now, it’s called Mark Richt Field at Sanford Stadium.
Dooley made a bigger splash as it were as an AD with the coaching hires of Dave Perno, Coach Y, Dennis Felton, and all of our other out-standing coaches (all the while forgetting of course, that it seems that Dooley was excellent in picking coaches not in his sport, he foisted Ray Goff and Jim Donnan on us). Naming the practice fields, and the Butts-Mehr complex with the track and everything after Dooley is more than good enough.
Stop living in the past, Bill, and embrace the now.
Mark Richt is the now, and he’s passing Dooley by.

Bob: Coach Dooley did not hire Ray Goff.He fired him.He fired him at great personal cost because Coach Goff and his wife were good friends of long standing. And he did hire Mark Richt.

Different era different times. This was before the limit on scholarships. Bama and the Bear would load up on all the talent and consistently win the SEC. When we beat Bama in Athens in 1976, the whole town went crazy. Won the SEC that year but lost to the number one Pitt Panthers and some guy named Tony Dorsett in the Sugar Bowl. Arguably Dooley’s greatest win besides the 1981 Sugar Bowl was his Cotton Bowl victory following the 1983 season. What time is it in Texas, 10 to 9. Yes Richt to me is a great coach, but it takes nothing away from Coach Dooley. And I am one who would rather leave the name Sanford Stadium alone.

Bob; I’ve got alot of respect for mark richt and the job he has done here. If he stays forty-five years and supports UGA the way coach Dooley has then maybe we can talk about naming something for him, but in these days and times I don’t see anyone staying anywhere for that long. That is what makes Dooley so deserving, not just the wins and losses.

What I’m saying is… Dooley is a very good coach. Mark Richt is a GREAT coach.
The proof is in the pudding. Winning percentage. Bowl wins. Big games won. A much harder league to play in. The sustained excellence. Never dropping out of the AP top 25 to end the season.
I’m not trying to take anything away from Dooley, but the era we’re living in now is just better for Georgia overall, and Coach Richt has everything to do with it.
I don’t agree with, and will never agree with putting Dooley’s name on the stadium or the field, because, again, Mark Richt is well on the way to surpassing Dooley’s on the field accomplishments.
I agree, his longevity with the school is great, but what he’s currently been given is more than fine as it comes to be rewarded with something in your name. I understand where all of his old players believe it should be Sanford-Dooley, but not me.
Sanford Stadium is a landmark and stands for something that goes beyond football. It’s about this school. It’s about how football brings us all together, and the name should never be altered or added on to. Dr. Sanford, through sheer force of will, got the stadium built and made sure that it was going to be the center, the very heart, of the grand campus he had envisioned, even 80 years ago.
Changing the name would be an insult to him. I’m sorry, but Sanford Stadium is bigger than football.
And again, naming the field after Dooley doesn’t make any sense, because the coach we have now will surpass him, it’s only a matter of time. Again… Richt already has twice the sUGAr Bowl victories, and his bowl record is far better.
When I mean Bill is living in the past, and should embrace the now, I don’t mean forget the past. The past is great. I love the past. But don’t let your love of the past blind you to what is actually better right now.
And Coach Richt is just better.

to Smiling dog….yes, you have to look out for those “terror” guys at Tech. Many are acquainted with Al-gebria and they use codes like x and y and are always trying angles and using computers and calculators and all those other weapons of math instruction.
BuLL was asked about higher math and he replied that if Gawd had intended for him to know more math, he would have more than ten toes and fingers. The uGA SID stated that was the most intelligent statement he ever heard!

The outcome of the Georgia Southern game will only mean something if we lose. Otherwise I don’t think it means anything. We just need to win. Mark Richt has warned about the dangers of trying to blow everyone out. The team gets so focused on the bottom line that they forget to do the little things. They’re looking for the knockout punch and fundamentals go out the window. This is a dangerous mentality. I cannot disagree more with what some of you are saying about putting big numbers up on Georgia Southern. That does not need to be the focus. If it is we’re going to have problems this year. The focus needs to be on winning the game. We do not need any style points. We’ve got the #1 ranking. We just need to win.
I’ll get off the soapbox now.

Unfortunately, I don’t have season tickets. I normally get to see a game or two for free each year, through buddies with extras. And, of course, I’m willing to pay a reasonablly high price, not more than $100, for ticket here and there.
However, with the high hopes and all the “new” fans coming out of the woodwork, it looks like I am destined to spend this football season in Villa Rica, watching the flat screen, as opposed to Athens, smelling the bourbon and BBQ.
I’m guessing that, outside of Central Michigan, most tickets are going to be extremely hard to come by.

Lame comeback - jjacket started the lameness with his brainless post - but I digress; you’re obfuscating the true meaning of my post with some 1950’s era jokes about how dumb UGA students are. Please…every year there are some students who get into GT who DIDN’T get into UGA, so give it up. UGA is as good a non-tech school as GT is for tech, so let’s get up to speed, Mr. Time Warp. UGA - prettier campus, prettier girls, more well-balanced & happy students, better sports, better food, better bars… I guess the only thing you misanthropes do better is math & making bombs.
PS- I graduated UGA in 1982 and have NEVER met a Techster as happy as I am…

Wow Bill, I had almost given up seeing another story from you again.
UGA goes 9-3 this year. Just no way to overcome this schedule. Sure losses to LSU & Florida. Any of Alabama, Aub, ASU or even SC capable of winning. Its not like we blew Bama out last year (winning in OT). SC waon last year and is always capable in the early season. ASU - can you say dehydration?
Can’t in a million years see any better than 10-2, but I am thinking 9-3. This is a great team but will have to start fast this year (unlike last year). But by the Fla game will all beat up.

Bob Sacamano,
No disrespect but you have now entered the area of not knowing WTF you are talking about. Coach Mark Richt is a great coach - but he is 2-5 vs. Fla. He has lost 3 of last 4 to UT and he HAS NOT WON a national championship. He should have a great record as UGA has become a leading supplier of NFL players. You are probably young, so you don’t remember how Coach Dooley beat Fla. REPEATEDLY when they had future NFL starters and he had less talent. Still, what I and others probably feel, is that Vince Dooley has to be honored in some way. I do agree with you that it doesn’t have to be the stadium, but something. All Bill was talking about was if not the stadium, then the garden would be great. Then you go off on some very subjective tangent about not living in the past and CMR is just better, yada, yada…well, fine, but let him stick around for 25 more years & win the National Championship. I LOVE MARK RICHT, Bob, but like honoring your parents & elders, a tradition has been laid for Mark. That’s all…

Seems to be some fuzzy memories about Dolley’s supposed role in hiring Mark Richt. Lest we forget, Dooley was all for giving Donnan one more year to show substantial improvement. Michael Adams scuttled that idea and fired Donnan. He also participated in the hiring of CMR. Sanford Stadium’s name should be left alone. It’s fine as is. The tribute to Dooley is more than enough for a good coach. CMR is a better coach and will far surpass Dooley’s record. Everybody keeps saying we are going to lose 2 or 3 games this year. Well, tell me which teams will beat us and would you trade our players for their players. I wouldn’t trade our squad for any team’s players in the nation.

Kendawg,
I am with you on that issue of losing 2-3 games. LSU is just plain stripped of last years key players, which means Les Miles will actually have to coach mostly his own recruits; UT will come into Athens without Erik Ainge; Bama was LUCKY to have even been in that game with us last year & it was at Tuscaloosa which was the loudest place this Ga squad has played in(Plus Matthew gave em two easy ones); FLA is the same team whose butt we whooped & AUB is the same team we whupped 2 years in a row…I don’t get 2-3 losses. and who is ASU?? Do you really think we will be intimidated by those underenthusiastic Pac-10 fans who will be buzzed on peyote??

Well, looks like my internet stalker is back.
Seems to me, that while asking everyone and anyone to email me (and please do if you want, I have no problems with that), he won’t email me him or herself. I’ve extended numerous invitations for him or her to contact me, but the person seems to want to hide behind their anonymity like a coward.
Me, I have nothing to hide.
It is funny though, that my internet stalker makes inferences about me that they have no clue about, while I positively know as a Bug this person is either a really ugly woman, or a dateless, pimple-faced nerd prone to enjoying Magic the Gathering, all things Dungeons and Dragons, and / or stroking their slide-rule on average of about 4 times a day.
Plus, the homophobia reeks of someone who is obviously not too secure with their own sexuality.
And, this person has absolutely no sense of humor at all. None. And they take a joke waaaaaaay too personally. Hint: maybe it hurt you so much because it was so true! Not sure what I mean, Dawg Faithful, you can check it out right here.
Again, it’s funny. Grow a sense of humor, internet stalker. Either that, or grow the cajones to actually contact me yourself.
As it is, Smiling Dog, I have to disagree with you when it comes to greatness.
Again, the SEC is far more competitive. So when he beat Florida repeatedly, it really doesn’t mean all that much except on the bottom line in the series.
Everyone beat Florida.
His bowl record is horrible. Especially in the big bowls. Again, Richt has doubled him up on sUGAr Bowl wins, when Dooley should have had 3 easy and in no way should have lost the ‘82 and ‘83 sUGAr Bowls, or the ‘82-‘83 Title to Penn State.
As for winning the MNC, are you kidding me? If the 1980-1981 Georgia season proves, you have to be more lucky than a great coach to win a MNC.
Is Mack Brown a great coach, or was Vince Young a great college athlete?
There is no way in hell either the 2006 Florida team or the 2007 LSU team which finished 13-1 are better than the 2002 Georgia team which finished 13-1, and even Pat Forde, or Ivan Maisel, or one of those ESPN guys (maybe it was Schlabach?) who rated the last 10 SEC Champions rate the 2002 Georgia team ahead of those two teams.
And, when you look at OSU sh—-ing the bed against some real competition the last two years, who’s to say Georgia wasn’t the best team in the nation in 2002, or that Miami was the better team had McGahee not blown out a knee.
Either way, I’d say right here right now, that the Richt-coached 2002 team was better than the Dooley-coached 1980 team. Richt’s team was better coached and multi-dimensional on offense. If we’re going to be realistic here, Dooley’s team in 1980 was Erk’s defense and Herschel.
Anyway, my argument stands. The sheer luck that goes into winning a MNC (MYTHICAL National Championship) disqualifies that statistic from being used to determine a great coach. Instead, I look at bowl record, overall winning percentage, finishes in the national rankings, SEC Championships, and sustained excellence.
When it comes to that criteria, Dooley only beats Richt in one area: SEC titles.
Sorry, that does not make him a better coach. Simply one who coached longer.

Ok, you dropped your snarkiness, so what gives? Reminds me of an old John Wayne line…”sure is quiet”…”yeah, tooo quiet….”
Seriously, I love the repartee w/ Tech people: my brother & mom’s bro. are Tech grads, great guys, but I tease them about their UGA angst…
Tarkenton was gone when Dooley got here..not sure what you meant. They can both thank Butts & Mehre.Just as Bobby Ross & G. Leary can thank Dodd & Heisman, for laying the foundations for these storied programs. I understand that Bob S. and others are tired of hearing about Dooley, etc. but the man coached for 25 years and won the SEC 6 times w/ a national championship. He should be honored, with a hall or garden or something, which is a time honored tradition. Mark Richt didn’t walk into Podunk U. and turn it into a powerhouse. Remember, as bad as we disliked Ray Goof & Jim Donnan, they only had two(3?) losing seasons beteween them and Donnan never lost a bowl game. This is UGA…You can see where other legendary teams went through god-awful years after a famous coach stepped down and some have not recovered. Coach Richt has come in & instilled a new attitude, is an ethical guy & will probably be the greatest coach in Ga. history…
I asume you are referring to SEC schedule starting 2 weeks later, but for once I am glad to see so-called “patsies” on our early schedule because the rest of the year is tough as nails. But wouldn’t exactly call Richt as a gambler….all you can do is play each week & see what happens.
You can make fun of BuLL all you want - just be ready for my feisty replies!

Kent N…. You must be having a hard time typing and giving yourself a hotdog handshake while watching some animated porn. Do us a favor and go on Tech’s blog and talk about you almost getting a “girl’s” number the other night at Swinging Richards.

Swinging Richard? What is that? What did I say that was not true? Look at uga’s record against the Big 3 in the SEC. UF-UT-LSU. Georgia doesnt change the rotation of the earth this year ! Hell UT returns a QB with experiance and better stats than does Stafford. Just tired of year after year reading about ‘The Legends in the Georgia Mind”

Kent N i really don’t care about past records…. All i know is you have no life other than to blog on other school’s blogs. You really have a sad life buddy. Why don’t you do us all a favor andstick to blogs about D&D or maybe Final Fantasy. Georgia has averaged 10+ win for the last 7 years…We have a winning record against LSU since Richt took over. We have turned the tide on the Florida series winning the last 2 of 4. Tennessee has caught Georgia playing really really bad football the last 6 quarters and i serious doubt that Fat Phil can consistently win against GA without David Cutcliff. It really sounds like you envy the Dawgs…. i would too if was forced to root for Tech, Tenn….ect. So like ive said find something better to do.. im sure there is a heated discussion on a D&D blog about that tricky Warlock on level 3 in the plains of Guandour.
And don’t pretend like you don’t go to Swinging Richards for “ladies” night

PBR Loser, I have no need to throw out made up facts. No uga has not had straight 10 win seasons. As far as my life? Go to the front page of todays ajc dot com go to lifestyles and look for Kent Nelson. Im there. Georgia has an overall losing record to both Alabama and Tennessee. Fat Phil owns uga and has routed them the past 2 years. Get your G.E.D, then get your facts straight.

Last , uga has not won the past 2 against UF. They have split the last 2. Throw out all the excuses you need for losing to Tennessee but they own uga, winning 16 out of 20.

Well Kent i looked you up….. I think i peed my pants laughing at you. The last photo i think was the best….And you call your self an accountant???? Mark Richt is 72-19 in seven years at Georgia which averages out 10.28 wins a year. Maybe you need to go back and re-take basic math. i said that Georgia has averaged 10 wins a season since Mark Richt started coaching. And you say i didn’t go to college when in fact i have and im in the process of going to loan school. By the way I was Homecoming King and Most Athletic when i was in High School but you can count on me NEVER bragging about it 30-40 years later on the AJC while wearing the gayest suit i have ever saw. Thanks for the laugh…..
Everyone needs to Check out Kent N’s Pictures in this link… its a good laugh (http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/living/my-style/my-style-nelson/)

Bandf@gs, wow you are a total loon! UGA students love the band, and they yell the whole game. To those who agree with me thanks. I really hope the BLACKOUT inspired older fans to stand and yell, and if not, hopefully they realized that they can “enjoy” the game on their couch! Be a part of the game dawg fans, not just a guy in the crowd!

Ken-cheer up,in two years phat phil will be fired and if your lucky steve will take over for fatso. Then once again ut fans can hold their heads high.Id be mad at the world too if my team finished last among the powerhouse teams.6-6/7-5/8-4 is only average and no ut fan should put up with phat phil any longer.WWWFIREPHILNOW.COM.Maybe we can make yall Dawg fans untill they fire fatso.Come down to Ga and get aboard a winning program.Phat Phil doesnt belong to the 10/7 club-only the bear, spurrier, dooley and mark richt are so honored{thats where a sec team coach reches 7 winning seasons with 10 or more wins}.

No man, no one likes band kids, accept band f@ags and even bigger f@gs that couldn’t even make the band. Fans may like the songs that are played, but not the actual people in the band. Sorry to burst your bubble, but being a red coat (or any band member) is about as cool as AIDS. Bands always represent the ugliest girls and the biggest loser guys in the school. This isn’t the leather helmet days when being in the band or being a male cheerleader was cool.

Kent N, you play loose w/ your facts - UT does not return an experienced QB with better stats than Stafford unless Ainge is back… Also, Ga leads FLA in the all-time series. We are behind in all-time vs. LSU & UT.But we have kicked LSU’s a* the last 2 times we played them. Richt is 4-3 vs UT. Bottom line for me is - whose fan are you? Or are you just sick of hearing about UGA?

I’m sorry I missed this post before now. It brings back memories and makes me wish I was there right now. I used to get my newspapers at Barnett’s and it was a daily habit to get my hamburgers at Allen’s on the way home from school (I lived on Nantahala Ext., right behind them). I just might have to come up for the Ga. Southern game now.

I get so tired of hearing talk about how a MNC is a measure of a great coach. If anything, it’s a measure of a good coach who got real lucky. Ask Fulmer (inexplicable fumble by Ark. qb in ‘98 when they could have run out the clock), Spurrier (1/3 of Nebraska team gets the flu before Big X11 championship), Meyer (USC doesn’t show up against a weak UCLA team), and Miles (2 losses, Pitt shocks W. Va. on the last game of the season).
Look how long it took Paterno and Bowden to win their first. Look how Tuberville got snubbed with a perfect season (also happened to Paterno several times). Bo Schembecler never won one, but Dennis Erickson, Johnny Majors and Danny Ford did.
A coach can control what happens in the conference, and Richt has won 2 in 7 years during an era when LSU, Auburn and Florida have had top teams, and Arkansas and Tennessee have been top contenders. Several others have been tough, bowl eligible teams through most of this period. Richt went 11-2, finished #, and to a BCS bowl in a year Georgia didn’t even qualify the SECC game. That’s great coaching.
Let’s quit dwelling on what we can’t control. Win the SEC enough times, and the MNC will eventually follow. But it will still be just a popularity contest.

Gosh-what a nostalgia rush-
We visited Allen’s on many occasions since graduation in’73. That was part of the charm-old farts like me looking for some sense of continuity from when we were in school-Allen’s hadn’t changed a bit-same cold beer-great cheeseburgers.
Anyone old enough to remember “The Rail” downtown-coldest beer and great atmosphere-if you were a little underage-no problem.
A good friend if mine from South GA always liked to tailgate in North Campus-said standing near the law school always made him feel smarter.
Remember the 81 Clemson game under the lights-we always were in the parking lot tailgating at 10 AM for a 1 PM kickoff. Guess when we arrived for the 9 PM kickoff-you guessed it-10 AM
My old college roommate would travel from Tampa for every home game. When asked about the fatigue factor-he would reply “Only a minor sacrifice for the DAWGS.
If all you DAWG fans wrote your anecdotes, I doubt the UGA library would hold them.
Glory Glory!!!
