So this is how it feels.

All the off-season speculation is over now and the coaches have made it official. Georgia is the pre-season No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

It’s a new experience for the Bulldog Nation. This is the first time the Dawgs have been ranked on top in a major pre-season poll and the first time they’ve been ranked No. 1 since the end of the 1982 season in the Herschel era. UGA’s sports publicity folks say the Dawgs’ previous highest pre-season rankings by major polls were in 1942 (2nd by AP), 2004 (3rd by AP, 4th by the coaches) and 1967 (6th, AP).

Of course, the AP writers’ poll is still to come, but it isn’t part of the BCS formula like the USA Today poll is.

Holding on to the top spot will be tough, probably the toughest challenge any Georgia football team has ever faced. They’ll have to overcome a tough schedule, some question marks in the offensive line and kicking game, and the mind games that big expectations can play with college kids, as well as avoiding major injuries. Luck always plays a part in it, too.

What counts, of course, is who ends up No. 1 and No. 2 at the end of the season and playing in the championship game. But a high pre-season ranking is a major advantage and gives the Dawgs some wiggle room as the season unfolds. Ask LSU about that.

Bottom line: The nation’s coaches think that, at this point before the first game is played, Georgia is the best team in the country.

Damn, that feels good.

Sorry, if I offended anyone in previous blogs and just want to clear the air. It is just a game, and it is silly for a grown man (well, I am really a little girl hee) to threaten to whip anyone’s a## on a blog. I was a little upset because our beloved mascot died being owned by the Gators. Also, I actually love GT when they aren’t playing UGA and not sure I could really whip any a** anyway, hee :).

Without a running game, the Bulldogs will be number 50.

Run, bulldogs run. The key to any football victory is the line of scrimmage. Good blocking always trumps everything else. A running game opens up a passing attack too. it eats up the clock. It’s frustrates the opposing offense, and keeps it on the bench.

I always laugh when the draft always picks big shot Qbacks or runners or receivers.

I’d stay with the best linemen. With good linemen, you dont need a Joe Montanna or an OJ. , you only need a good quarterbacks and fullbacks and recievers. They only have to be good. Give any good quarterback time, and he’ll pass for TDs. Give any good running back room and he’ll run for TDs.

It’s the line of scrimmage. That’s where I’d spend all my money. The men on the line have to be GREAT, or you cant win consistently.

Great lineman. Period. Winning football.

This is my annual SEC prediction, last year, got both East and West correct…LSU-Tenn. 2008, West- LSU,Auburn, Ole Miss. East- Florida, UGA, Tenn SEC title game FLORIDA. The reason for not selecting UGA is one word>SCHEDULE. If LSU QB situation is not potent, Auburn will win West and lose to Florida..Hopefully Auburn-UGA plays twice, but its notin the books this year..

Florida always has an easier schedule than Georgia, and the rest of the SEC for that matter. This is nothing new. I have no idea how it happens, but when the conference schedule is drawn up Florida sure does seem to get a pretty good draw relative to the rest of the SEC. Not that any SEC schedule is easy, but as far as timing and off weeks Florida gets the breaks. Most SEC teams have had to play 8 or 9 games in a row the past few years at some point. Not Florida. They always have a convenient off week slap dab in the middle of the season, usually before the Georgia game of course. And they almost never play more than two consecutive road games. Do not make me laugh by claiming the Georgia game is a road game for Florida. Georgia does it almost every year. And do not make me laugh by claiming the Florida game is NOT a road game for Georgia.

I’m no conspiracy theorist. This is just an observation and I think the facts are there to support it. Florida always gets a very favorable SEC draw. I’m surprised more has been written on this quite frankly.

As for 2008, it will be particularly humiliating for the paper Gators when they fail to win the East this year. After all, they had the easier schedule.

Hey Bob, maybe Florida AD is on top of schedules more than UGA AD. I remember blogs about Stafford vs Tebow before each one set foot on campus. UGA poster”Stafford will dominate Tebow” and visa versa, well vice versa won…Tebow is great and deserving Hiesman winner,. Stafford has done very good, but hes not a Tebow.and will probably never win a NC..If not Auburn, Im UGA, just don`t see it in either team this year.. cuz, Buck would still be proud of Stafford, especially after last years # 2 season.

Will someone do something about the vulgar things on this blog which I guess is a Georgia site. Does not make the dawgs or anyone lookgood. One thing that has upset the Dawgs voer the last 2 years is that they thought they had the great QB in Stafford and so far he has been mediocre at best while Tebow is one the way to being the best QB in college football history. Stafford will be fine this year but he is minor league when compared to Tebow and that for some reason really iritates the DAWGS.

Football 101: To the Coaches

The Game of Football is as close to war that any game can come without actually harming anyone, scratch that, without actually maiming anyone, scratch that, without actually killing anyone, okay, football is war with cheerleaders. Fine. R U happy?

Like war, the most successful way to win is a siege, with trenches dug into the turf in a series of parallel lines growing ever closer to the enemy’s lines until your starve them out, (shut out), hurl dead animals at them (three points or one point), or simply enter their lines (six points), which we call a touchdown. Get enough touchdowns and you win so handily that you get to make off with the enemy’s cheerleaders, or their horses, which is why football was invented in the first place. *See Joe Namath and Roy Rogers.

To form a successful seige, then, you must have the strongest front line.

Without the strongest front line, you cannot win, no matter how good your horsemen are or no matter how accurate your artillery is. War is won in the trenches.

Now, the best play is the quarterback sneak, where all your lineman move forward smushed up against each other without locking arms, and their combined weight can easily get two or three yards just because of the laws of physics. If you did that every play, you would win every game, but nobody would watch. (And we’d call it rugby). However, you cannot win unless the rugby play is a constant threat, and causes the defense to delay just that instant to see if you’re going up the middle again. That’s the only sure way to introduce artillery or the long bomb, which is also essential for success, because if the defense has to delay to make sure it’s not the rugby play again, then that’s the margin a receiver needs to get open fifty yards downfield.

People have totally forgotten the fundamentals of football. The mud. The head down forward rush. The mob rule. The bone crushing crunch of the masses. The vigilantism after the game when you’ve lost and you burn down people’s barns and laugh about it later. Did I type that out loud?

The pass was an afterthought to increase ratings. Passing is for ratings. Ratings R Football 2.

Football is a game of what if. What if the receiver goes straight down the field at full speed? What if he button hooks at twenty yards? What if the receivers on the left run over to the right, and the receivers on the right run over to the left, (you’re quite mad, you know)…..add that to what if they rugby again, and you’ve got a confounding problem for the air defense.

Critical to the defense are the linemen. Your front line should have four men at all times, sometimes five, depending on the score, the quarter, the last few possesions, and the momentum of the game. But never put less than four men on the defensive line. Never. A three man rush is no rush at all. you need four rushers. On every play, the four front lineman should always be going all out toward the backfield to penetrate, interfere and destroy. Every play. That’s why the linemen must be the best, and all resources should go to drafting or buying them. It’s the little known secret of football.

Stay tuned for part two of Football 101: The Play you should never use, it stinks so bad, and I’ve only seen it work once or twice in twenty years, yet it is used ten times a game by both sides. (actually there are two plays that dont ever work and R used insufferably and have ruined football forever and need to be elimintated forever).

Being #1 right now really means nothing to me, except we get some national exposure. The season is so long, schedule, injuries and luck all play a factor. Being #1 right now is really meaningless with so much football to be played.

By The New Rugby

August 2, 2008 11:18 AM | Link to this

Being #1 is a stupid concept: Opinion of loser coaches and hack sports writers who dont know what the H they’re talking about. Just because you coach a team, doesn’t mean you understand football. Just because you write about a team, doesn’t mean you know squat diddle poo. I love the way most football pundits know the roster and the numbers and the stats, but cant deliberate strategy worth a tinkle.

There’s too many teams to ever really determine who’s number one. The playoffs would go on forever and we’d never have to talk to our wives……(what am I saying, lets do it).

Just win all your games, and you’re number one in the local fan’s eyes.

If you dont win all your games, you dont belong in the bowls. Period. I dont care how the team’s season evolved. too bad, you lost. no bowl. flush.

If no team is undefeated then dont have any bowls. There’s teams that have lost twice or three times in the bowls. Why? I think notre dame made it to the rose bowl in 1922 with a 6-8 record and a coaching scandal that had Knute Rockne beating up the Gipper for dropping one in the end zone, (and it wasn’t a football….ew).

When football goes wrong: Woody Hayes tackling that guy during a live play. WTF? This is what I’m talkin’ ‘bout.

Lets get back to football. I think Jim Mora is the worst coach in the history of football and if he wins more than four games this year, I will eat a cheerleader, on Uboob, and that’s a guarantee. (Okay, I’d eat a cheerleader anyway no matter how Jim Mora fares this year).

Word up + out!

Is Tebow a better quarterback than Stafford? A better question is, would you rather have a heisman winning quarterback or have the four games that you lost last year? Fact is, UGA will need to step up and they cant start off slow as they usually do. With help in the backfield from King and Richard Samuel it will be EXTREMELY difficult to handle UGAs offense and the defense only got better. All the questions could have been answered if UGA and USC had played and Colt Brennan played Ga Tech at the Poulan Bowl.

Mike ,

You posted “Pre-season rankings are based on pure spectulation and should not be taken to seriously!! The bullpups have a not so easy schedule ahead of them. That first trip out west to face an Arizona team will be a big disappointment for them after they lose!!!”

While I agree we have a difficult schedule, but you have to realize all 12 teams in the SEC have a difficult schedule. Its just so happens we have the horses this year to play with anybody and I expect that Arizona State will be no different. Matter of fact I expect that we will beat the Sundevils.

War Eagle we will beat Florida again this year and win the SEC East. My friend at Florida told me that his defense has improved but they have serious depth issues on both the OL and DL at Florida and football games are won in the trenches. Anyway this preseason ranking stuff means very little as you still have to prove it on the field, but having said that in looking at history the coaches usually have a good handle on who the top teams are. Also history has shown the higher in the polls you are at the beginning of the season the more leeway you have in being able to recover if you lose a game.

Go Dawgs

Part Two: Plays that should be obsolete.

  1. The quarterback drop back draw to a fullback who’s just standing there. This is a gift to the defense, and the most easily defensed play in the history of football. Dont use it more than once every four games. It’s stupid.

  2. The end sweep. This is another gift to the defense. it’s easy to spot, and easy to foil. The goal line is not toward the out of bounds. Turn right. (or left)

Football is in America’s blood. We’ve all grown up with nothing but football. We were well into our twenties before we realized that football wasn’t the most important thing in our lives. We had to get married and have kids and careers too.

Most Americans think they’re football savants. All of us are experts at calling plays, and designing defenses. We all feel that the people actually employed in those positions are idiots, fools, jackals, and losers. They must have known somebody to get their jobs. They couldn’t possibly know what they’re doing. But we do. This is a common trait of all americans and an easy tell if you’re a spy.

Only 2 teams in the history of college football have won the national championship with the number 1 strength of schedule. Those 2 teams are the 1996 Florida Gators and the 2006 Florida Gators. If you have any doubt about this, then by all means look it up yourself. Someone mentioned earlier that UF traditionally plays a weaker schedule than UGA. If you can point to a year other than this year in the past 10 seasons where that is true, then I will point back at you and say “liar”. Good luck with the gauntlet UGA. Playing LSU,Florida and Auburn in less than a months time will prove to be your undoing. Don’t get mad about this, no one can beat those teams in the order you guys play them. Best of Luck and we will see you in Jville. It is going to be one hell of a show!

It’s a crying shame that these kids don’t realize that they are risking being kicked off the team that well could end up number one in the nation. As Deputy Fife said, “we’ve got to nip it at the bud.” In this instance, I think it should include penalties for even going to bars. And I mean this for all schools. This problem is far too wide spread. This may seem harsh to some, but, perhaps, the players will have to accept that with the scholarship comes some very strict regulations. Just MHO.

I’m a Bulldog fan, but there’s a part of me that thinks we’re about a year away. I still think the Dawgs will have a good season, winning 11 games or more, and anyone that’s predicting an 8-4 season is idiotic. UGA has only finished 8-4 twice under Mark Richt, in 2001 during his first season when the team handn’t learned to win yet and in 2006 when the team was battling inexperience and injuries on offense. Everyone is making a big deal about the Dawgs road schedule, but the Dawgs have only lost on the road 4 TIMES in the last 7 years under Richt. Under Richt they are 3-0 in Columbia( sorry Cocks but we’re not scared of Columbia!), 2-1 in Auburn, 2-1 in Lexington, all of which they will play at this year. They are 0-1 at LSU but that was in 2003 when LSU won the National Title. If UGA is going to lose, it will be on a neutral site or at home. I think the Alabama game is dangerous. Bama’s not very good, but they have enough talent to pull of an upset and this is the kind of game that the Dawgs might overlook. And we might lose to the Gators this year this we’ll be beat up from playing in LSU the week before. So I’m thinking 11-1 or 10-2 this season, and if they prove me wrong then so be it.

a lot of the people on here don’t have a clue how things work in CFB. Starting with the prejudice SOB Terrence moore !!

Nice to see an article in today’s paper getting reactions to the #1 ranking from somebody besides an incoming Tech freshman.

I have lost count of the number of UGa team members who have showed up in the headlines. It’s an embarrassment to the players, the team and the University. Coach Richt is first rate and a straight arrow kind of guy. BUT…what we have is a failure of leadership. President Adams ought to call Evans and Richt into his office and ask what they intend to do to stop this nonsense. “The Culture” has puffed up the egos of too many of these young men to the point where taking responsibility is the last thing they care about. Meanwhile, off in Iraq and Afghanistan, young men (and women) their age are in harm’s way so these athletes can act like three-year-olds.

I am not saying CRM has to break rules and put the guys on lock down in the off season. It is easy to take scholarships and kick kids off the team for legal problems. Make a RULE and it is across the board and written in stone then stick to it no matter the player involved.

More Thugs arrested.Enjoy your preseason ranking that don’t mean $hit. Voters won’t give your mutts #1 ranking again this season except at how many mutts are in the Athens Clark County jail. It’s great to be a UGA Mutt.

i think that no polls should come out until the 4th week of the season. of course, there is no money or hype in that.

I find it truly hilarious that any CFB fan can knock UGA players for getting in trouble with the law in the off-season. This crap goes on at EVERY college campus in the USA. It is publicized more than it should be with our local media. They jump on a story and and treat it like it is a murder rap or something. Coaches can only do so much to “baby-sit”. The players in ANY legal trouble at UGA are disciplind accordingly. If you think players should get dismissed from programs for being drunk or riding the wrong way on a one way street on a moped, you are insane. CMR handles discipline in a very frank and asserting manner. bGayturd players have been caught stealing cars from impound lots and firing guns in crowds and have not been punished as severly as a UGA player skipping class (shame on Urban Myth Crier). The Nerds even reinstated an accused drug felon after 2 weeks time. Every school has problems with their “kids” during the off season, so don’t act vlike it is an isolated thing happening in Athens only…. On being #1 preseason-

I really like the Dawgs chances if we survive the first 4-5 weeks. What I mean is we need to be firing on all cylanders early in the season. I know that we would beat the Cocks 19 out of 20 times, but the debacle of dropped passes and missed assignments like last year could be deadly. Arizona State could be a trap with Bama coming up next and the newancy of playing out West for the first time in 60 years. (BTW, I will be going to this game…how many others?). I have been looking forward to this season since ‘06, when Stafford signed and knew it could be a very special season. On paper, when you look at over-all talent and depth at EVERY position, we will be tough to beat. If we play up to capabilities, UGA WILL be in the BCS championship game even with 1 or 2 losses. I’m thinking we get thru unscathed. To all you jealous fans of other teams- get ready for the BIG DAWG to eat…..if you don’t like it, get the he11 of our blog!

Well, I guess everyone would shut up about UGA players if they started using credit cards of dead players dead girlfriends (UF) or traffic drugs across campus(GT), or hell even sell crack (ALA), stealing cars(UF), firing automatic weapons(UF)and not forget Teblow and his roomate kissing. I agree with you lawdawg. Oh yeah, Gaytor fans, dont be jealous because we whipped you A$$ with a heisman trophy quarterback. How is Teblow doing with all the circumsisions?

HE15MAN….Nice stats. Guess your one of those fans that brag about Teblow and the heisman and forget your crappy season. Your visit to Jville will have same result as last year due to Gaytors inability to block. Oh yeah, I really hope Teblow doesnt end up being the next Prothro.

I think that Cuz is proably a 15 or 16 year old marching band kid who desperately wants to be a football player. His constant “nuclear option # 1” is obviously some catch phrase he has picked up playing silly video games. He should practice his tuba, piccolo, or whatever he plays in the band and stay off sports blogs where his lack of any kind of sports knowledge is apparent. His constant threats agains anonymous bloggers is really wearing thin. Maybe he can go around the state and beat up everyone in order to get the person who bruised his ego.

I have to take up for Cuz here, hmmm. I’ve known him thru these blogs for a while and he’s a pretty astute guy; witty, definitely not a kid, but a kid at-heart. I’ve gotten on to him in the past for being a UGA at-all-costs guy, but that’s really a true fan for you. He’s having fun and he should have that right as much as anyone.

Forgot to mention, hmmm. I liked your post. But I think you’re being a little tough on Cuz. Sometimes, if we just drop in from time-to-time we don’t get the whole gist of things. FWIW, if I’m not mistaken, he’s from Dis-gusta.

If UGA wins as they are predicted, this summer antic will be forgotten and gone, if 8-4, 9-3 or even 10-2 pops up, it could cost some CMR damage control…luck luck except Auburn, where I see a 31-17 win at Auburn…

Is it me or does the SI Cover look like Matt Stafford is unloading the UGA helmet into the toilet? I think the sun got to me….it was hot and humid and I’ve been holding the STOP sign all day on I-85.

Wonder if Richt thinks this is how the season will go…..in the toilet? 1/2 the team is in jail….we haven’t begun practice……WOW! CLASS ACT!

Bob…what are you drinking. Have you even bothered to look at Florida’s SEC scedule? Every team gets a off week eventually during the season. Georgia had a off week last year before they played Florida (I guess that is why you beat Florida…not) last year. The Gators, in fact, had the toughest schedule in the nation when they won the NC. They played the 5th toughest last year. This year’s schedule is brutal as well. No less brutal than Georgia. I guess you will be claiming the schedule (or the off week) cost you to get globbered by Florida this year. Already making excuses, Bob? Well, you will need them because Florida’s defense is looking very good in practice so far (the team is bigger, faster, deeper, and much more experienced on the D-side). Bad news for everyone in the SEC, I am afraid.

Part Two: Plays that should be obsolete.

The quarterback drop back draw to a fullback who’s just standing there. This is a gift to the defense, and the most easily defensed play in the history of football. Dont use it more than once every four games. It’s stupid.

Stay tuned for part 3: Mime Football. Excerpt: “The Huddle is the most important part of any play. Perfect silence must attend any huddle. Always huddle far enough away from the opponents cheerleaders, so nobody gets pinched leaning over….”
