R.I.P.: A damn good Dog!

Uga VI died Friday night of a heart attack, the Savannah Morning News has reported.

The paper reported burial is planned for Sanford Stadium on Monday.

Plans had called for the white English bulldog mascot, who would have turned 10 years old in July, to have continued serving as the official UGA mascot in the upcoming football season.

The biggest of all the Uga mascots at 65 pounds, Uga VI was the first full-grown dog to take over as mascot in 27 years when he participated in a changing-of-the-collar ceremony with his movie star father, Uga V, on Sept. 11, 1999 at the Georgia-South Carolina game.

No word yet from UGA about the official succession, but it had been reported that the Sonny Seiler family of Savannah, owners of the Uga line, have an heir ready to take over as Uga VII

It’s just too bad the Bulldog Nation won’t get to say an official goodbye to a fine mascot.

Our sympathies and heartfelt thanks go out to Sonny, Cecelia, Swann, and Charles for the tremendous efforts and love they show for their (and our) Dogs. Also for the extreme patience they have with us sometimes under very trying circumstances.

UGA VI will join his ancestors fittingly in Sanford.

Being an animal lover Uga will be truly missed. We always looked forward to watching him come on to the field in Sanford Stadium on fall Saturdays. One of the things we remember most, he was wearing his black jersey against Auburn too. And the first I might add.

**Tribute To A Best Friend

Sunlight streams through window pane unto a spot on the floor…. then I remember, it’s where you used to lie, but now you are no more. Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound…. then I remember, It’s where your paws would joyously abound. A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill, then I remember it can’t be yours…. your golden voice is still. But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall and lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall. I’ll wrap these treasured memorials in a blanket of my love and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.

hey old dawg…UGA will lose AT LEAST two games in the regular season this fall…how in the world are you going to deal with UT - who whipped you, south carolina - who beat you at home, and florida - with a returning heisman winner, AND THEN deal with bama, DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION lsu, and auburn in the west? not to mention you barely got by vandy and kentucky…hell, the hatch-attack from statesboro might get you 1ST GAME! quit listening to the AJC hype…keep in the mind the same paper that’S IN THE TANK for HUSSEIN obama also loves muttland for the national title…obama and UGA - both beat up in november!

Can we please get off the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech crap once in our lifetime?

This blog is about the UGA dawg and that is it. UGA fans are inviting this crap when they talk about how much the dawg had to do with beating Tech. Last time I checked the players controlled that.

Also, if I have to read one more freaking comment about how Tech sux or I expect nothing less from a Tech fan and blah blah blah I will f@*ing puke!!!

UGA fans need to stop being hypocrites and take notice of all the BS they spew on a blog about Tech. By and large they are worse on the blogs. It is not even close.

Anyway, back to what this blog is actually about:

I am sorry to hear about a beloved mascot to pass away. He definitely gave UGA some good luck and will surely be missed by the fans. Cheers to a good career on the sidelines at UGA and to the UGA baseball team for even making it to the finals. As a tech fan I look forward to the new mascot and a competitive rivalry in the future.

I am sorry about your dog. I like dogs. This comment is not directed at the posters here, but rather at the AJC. The listing of a real obituary for any animal alongside a human being is disgraceful. I don’t care if it was a famous dog or a unknown family pet. A dog is not a human and posting such a listing is the height of crass, unprofessionalism by this newspaper.

Now before you jump on me because I am a Tech man, I ask you: would you want to open the paper tomorrow morning or go online to see the listing of a spouse, parent, child or sibling and see their obituary listed along with any animal?

I’m sorry the dog died and all, but who cares? This is NOT a legitimate news story and I can’t believe the AJC is covering it. I mean, with all due respect, english bulldogs are among the dumbest of all AKC breeds out there, so its not like he knew what was going on anyway. Finance Buzz, if you don’t see the importance and historical significance of this fine creature, you really don’t understand what it means to be a fan of anything. This was not just an animal, this was a live representation of the Bulldog Nation. Would this anonymous parent, spouse, etc you speak of have a line to get their autograph (pawprint)? Do they have children waiting for hours to get their picture taken with them? Do they cause 92000 people to wildly cheer when they arrive at work? I honestly wouldn’t mind if one of the UGAs was memorialized on the same page as I was. Getting upstaged by a beloved legacy? Sic ‘em!

Hey BADDAWG, I don’t know how old you are, but my uncle was the Coach of the Packers a long time ago and I hear he is well known down there. He’s Babe White and a helluva man.

I took my son to the Georgia Day about 2 years ago which was held at the practice field. He’s in a wheelchair, thanks to a tractor trailer, but Matt Stinchcomb met us and took us up to the covered venue where all the players gathered.

UGA VI was laying on his ice bags, but his handlers took him off and led him over to my son to take a picture. I think they both loved it.

UGA will be missed. It’s not like our own pet. This pet HAS to be remade. This IS the Bulldog Nation. Most of us understand this. Pets die. But BULLDOGS last forever.

tech wins #35-#59 (check the US news & world report college rankings)

tech wins 4-1 (national championships - and that supposed title in 1942 doesn’t count)

tech wins 12-6 (siaa + southern conference + sec (up to 1963) titles - tech (1916, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1927, 1928, 1939, 1944, 1951, & 1952, while u[sic]ga - 1896, 1920, 1942, 1946, 1948, & 1959)

Zeb you could search the world over and not find a finer man than Tom “babe” White. I played football for coach White….I have lived here all my life and have yet hear ANYONE say one bad or derogatory word about coach White. He has had a very positive influence on many, many in this small town…young and old alike. By the way, the last a$$ whipping I had was from coach White during 10th grade PE. It was the end of the year and our city swimming pool was right next to the high school…the last 2 weeks of school we got to swim at PE every day….He told me to do something and I ignored him…he yanked my tail out of that pool and gave me 3 hard licks with his trusty paddle, and all i had on was a wet bathing suit!!!! I remind him about that to this day…..His health is failing now, but he was and is “a hell of a good man”. FinanceBuzz…not afraid or ashamed to post my address here…I dont have to sit here anonamously behind a keyboard if I have something to say to you or TO HELL WITH GA. Stupid? Maybe in your opinion. Hope you dont think for a split second that i care or am concerned about your opinion. I have dsone quite well for myself and my family over the years and enjoy a comfortable, enjoyable lifestyle. Tom. Truly appreciate your concern regarding my mental health. I have been off ridalin for years by the way. Take zanex, lexapro, and welbutrin now. Get it from the local health department thru the indigent care program. Thank God for that program which enables me to get my meds free….times been hard since i got fired from McDonalds couple of months back!!! State owned van picks me up to take me to the health department. Talk about a blessing…my 1978 raised F-150 was picked up by Speedy Cash…the title loan place. Sorry for the loss of the dog…

Can anyone admit to genetic in-breeding or don’t they teach that to Ugag Students in veternarian school? Probably not!!

UGA 7 won’t last long either, it’s just the way Malthus worked out his theories and predicted it, live with it!!

No need to reply to these cretins from the Trade School or threaten to fight them.

Just let them show themselves for the classless, tasteless and most of all pathetic losers they are.

And, amid the sadness over the loss of a fine mascot and a beloved family pet, take some amusement in their delusional predictions of what sort of change “CPJ” will bring to their mediocre program.

Dear jacketjohn, Financebuzz and To Hell With Georgia:

It is out of respect for the inherent sanctity of life that most human beings revere their pets. Dogs and cats can be loyal and loving; they can provide the companionship that all people crave (and that not all people are fortunate enough to have); and they deserve our respect for their roles in our lives.

It has been shown that psychopaths typically get their start by maiming and torturing animals. Normal human beings have a respect for life as the miracle that it is, even if that life is manifested in the guise of an animal. That’s why children with pets are better parents as adults (it’s true; look it up).

Uga VI was an iconic mascot. Moreover, he was a sweet, loving dog, and the symbol of the capstone academic institution of the University system of Georgia—the institution which has had BY FAR the greatest impact on this state over its illustrious 270-year history.

Those of you who wish to turn this into an athletic rivalry blog can go elsewhere. This blog is to mourn the passing of a damn good dawg—an animal who represented his university, and his state, quite well. Uga VI is one animal that I would be proud to share an obituary page with. I’d be willing to bet that the majority of normal folks out there would feel the same way.

For the three of you listed at the top, just go away. You aren’t wanted here. This is for fans and dawg lovers only. You can save your irrelevant claptrap for The Hive or some other partisan site. No one here wants to read it.

He was “OUR DAMN GOOD DAWG” the whole nations…I’ll miss him and never forget the South Carolina game when we met. Came in a winner. Left us as another legend!!!

TO HELL WITH GA. As much as I hate GT I will be the first to admit that GT did indeed have their glory years in football….they were a power in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. BUT as i stated GT has not been to a major bowl since 1956…that is a fact. The pious holier than thou people in control of GT athletics at the time…early 60’s decided that GT was bigger than the SEC….thought they would be another Notre Damn…and withdrew from the SEC. A fatal mistake to this day and for many, many years to come as far as your atheletic programs are concerned!!! Yet yall are too PROUD to admit it. And as a result have VERY little to be proud of period anymore concerning athletic achievement and status. In the mean time you come up with a 1001 excuses as to why you cant compete….size of the school(look at Notre Dame and Miami). A most often repeated excuse is “we cant recruit the same type of athletes because of our academics…..at one time…that was true…not since the early 70’s when you created majors just to make it easier for your athletes to get in and stay in school!!! Two examples that i know to be factual….Joe Burns…he sat in MY son’s 9th grade algebra class when he was a senior and still had to have tutoring to pass that class. That was at TCCHS in Thomasville. He also had to take the SAT 6 or 7 times to make the required score. In the early to mid 80’s Tyrone Sorrells….an all american HS TE from Buford signed with UGA. This was pre-Jan Kemp scandle and law suit(yes it was embarassing…the fact that UGA had used a remedial studies program for borderline students…most of whom were athletes) Now this story really gets interesting..and it can be researched in the AJC archives…Sorrells struggled even in the remedial studies program at UGA (btw he made 460 on the SAT per article in AJC). After leaving UGA and having to sit out a year he transferred…..LOW AND BEHOLD he transferred to GT. Not only did he get into Tech….he stayed in school and started 2 years at OT under coach Bill Curry!!!!! LOOK IT UP. Say what makes you feel better in making excuses for your ineptitude in your football program if it makes you feel better. Fact is yall recruit the same kids we do.

For those of us who like to argue (including tossing barbs and trading insults to the others respective schools football programs and which one is superior or better……WHY DO ANY OF US NEED LOOK FURTHER THAN OUR HEAD TO HEAD RECORD…..WHY IS THAT SO HARD FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND??? For the last 45 years UGA has owned GT. Yall are our female dog!!!! And will be for the forseable future!!! You now like to talk about how many games we are gonna lose this year…and we may indeed lose 2 or 3 games with out schedule…..BUT however many losses we have….it wont be to Tech. If it makes you feel better to take pleasure and point out who else beats us…if that is what you need to make you feel better about your miserable program…then have at it!!!! But please keep in mind that I and most other UGA fans recieve immense pleasure EVERY time you have to point out that another team other than Tech can beat us, knowing you RARELY do anymore!!!! In the mean time…..see you in Nov. for your yearly a$$ whipping!!!!

hey BADDAWG - some points well taken. the fact remains, however, that we still are above you by 20 spaces in the best overall colleges list. we have remained in the top 10 public universities from the time that little “north avenue trade school” was beating you three years in a row. it seems you missed that when tech and u[sic]ga were in the SAME CONFERENCE playing the SAME OPPONENTS at the SAME TIME (viz. the “before 1963” comment) tech ran over you.

if you wanna talk “scandle”s, let’s just look at the u[sic]ga basketball team from the past year with all the arrests and players kicked off the team…you get lucky over four games at our place and the whole “world” forgets how much you sucked during the season.

how many u[sic]ga grads have walked on the moon?

has the knock off of the battle hymn of the republic you claim as a fight song ever been sung in space directly in front of the Lord (the ramblin’ wreck was the 1st school fight song sung in space)?

was the knock off of the battle hymn of the republic you claim as a fight song sung on higgins boats over the channel on 6 june 1944 on the way to knocking back the nazis?

how many years after us did you have to wait until you won a rose bowl?

and let’s talk recent football history…for all the big talk u[sic]ga fans do about their team and how great they think their team is compared with the rest of the nation, the fact remains that over the last 25 YEARS, your school has just as many national titles and mine does - ONE - and ours is more recent. in the last 25 YEARS, you’ve won just as many conference titles as we have - TWO (and you didn’t have florida state (and later miami - who we own now) - who’ve both ruled football overall over that time period - in your conference).

how in hell do you get a B[C]S bowl AT HOME and go down by FOUR TOUCHDOWNS IN THE FIRST QUARTER before you begin to try to play a game of football (west virginia in the 2006 sugar bowl).

u[sic]ga fancies themselves as powerful as southern cal, oklahoma, lsu, florida state, and michigan over the last 20+ years, but the fact remains that you are really no better than that “north avenue trade school” in the stats that count - conference and national titles. i think many u[sic]ga fans know this but don’t like to admit it openly. if you read the atlanta urnial-constipation, you’d think y’all have the title already wrapped up. i’m just saying (1) you’re nowhere nearly as great as you’d like others to think you are, and (2) you’ve got a TOUGH row to hoe this fall before you even get to come to the dome for the sec championship game…..IF YOU WIN YOU’RE DIVISION THIS TIME…

My, my, my. Such venom, insults and snide comments out of a few Tech fans. Like I said before, most Tech fans I know have much more class that the sorry bunch posting such hate here.

But, you have to understand that a lot of Tech fans just don’t get what UGA VI meant to us. He was a part of every one of us 92,000 screaming fans at home games. Other SEC fans would line up to get a picture taken with UGA VI. Buzz is a decent mascot, but he (or she) just doesn’t generate the heartfelt love that Georgia fans have for UGA.

If LSU announced that Mike the Tiger passed, or UT announced that Smokey died, other SEC schools would understand what they are feeling. THe only ACC school that would come close to understanding is Florida State, who has Renegade, their horse.

We just can’t expect Tech fans to understand how we feel. But, think of how we’ll feel at the first home game, when they put that collar and jersey on UGA VII, and over 92,000 fans are standing and shouting as one “DAMN GOOD DOG”!

I am a profound animal lover, but y’all are attributing things to a dog that was just that, a dog. You pet him, feed him, walk him, he is happy. But truthfully, he really didn’t give a d@mn about a football game - that is not what they are there for. As long as he got his meals, walk and some attention.

As to the liberal tree hugger w the remarks about George Carlin - go check his works…he thinks (thought) you are (were) an egotist for presuming to think that there is any long lasting human effects to our planet that has been around for billions of years. This planet will be here long after we are gone!

If you want to get riled up about something, try getting riled up about the folks dealing with the floods in the midwest…if UGA VI was all you say he was, he would prefer you think about them than him being buried in a marble tomb

Rest in peace, Uga VI. You were a DGD. Thanks for the memories.

It has been a tough week for the Bulldog Nation: first the meltdown in Omaha; then yet another basketball player gets kicked off the team for being stupid; now Uga dies. They say bad things happen in 3’s … well, I sure hope this is it for a while.

On a side note, these blogs are hilarious. People’s comments make for fascinating reading, ROTFLOL. I am sitting here at the home computer in Cleveland with a frosty mug of cold milk and fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies with walnuts on the bottom. Sad to say, but that is my Saturday night entertainment. Some of the blog entries have made me hopping mad, while others have had me laughing out loud.

Yeah, contrary to the opinions of a few, the passing of Uga VI is a big deal. Yes, really.

Of course, sure, I know that in the grand scheme of things, with wars and rumors of wars, families struggling to make ends meet, and a poor family that lost their 17 year-old son today at Six Flags, the death of the flagship university’s mascot might take a back seat. The aforementioned issues are also huge news items that deserve their due.

But Uga VI represents the emodiment of passion that all University of Georgia alumni, students, and fans have for the Red and Black. It is a big deal when arguably the most recognizable symbol of a 35,000 student university passes away. It is a big deal when almost a quarter of a million living alumni have lost their lovable mascot. It is a big deal when the pride of a state says goodbye. Yes, I said the pride of a state. If you just moved here from somewhere else, you probably would not understand why “the dog” means so much to the rest of us.

Yes, it is a big deal that Uga VI is gone. That is why you see such prominent coverage in the AJC. The paper that “covers Dixie like the dew” is just doing its job in reporting on a story of immense STATE-WIDE interest.

Gooo Dawgs! Sic’em! Woof woof woof woof! Once a Dawg, ALWAYS a Dawg … HOW SWEET IT IS! HBTD! GATA!
