Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Making the championship final of the College World Series against that other bunch of Bulldogs from Fresno State already has marked David Perno’s 2008 Diamond Dogs as really special.
But the UGA baseball coach and players aren’t just winners. They’re a class act, as my old high school buddy Dan (who’s now a judge, by the way) discovered last week.
Dan and his son spent the week in Omaha at a 13U baseball tournament and, while there, got to attend three CWS games, including Saturday’s big win over Stanford. But the best part of the trip, Dan says, was Thursday night. The North Gwinnett Bulldogs were dining in Anthony’s steakhouse when the UGA baseball team arrived. As they walked in, the kids from Gwinnett gave them a big ovation.
A few minutes later, Dan says, Coach Perno came back to find out who the kids were and spent time talking individually with the boys. Later, several of the UGA players, including Matt Cerione and Gordon Beckham, stopped by to talk with the young players and wish them well.
“Coach Perno, who left the banquet room two different times to come talk to the boys, and the players could not have been more gracious,” Dan says, “essentially interrupting their meal to give twelve 13-year-old boys the thrill of their trip (and two of the mothers, who started fanning themselves when Matt Cerione came in!)”
Dan sums it up: “No surprise to you, but the UGA baseball program is one class organization.”
Indeed.
Big woofs to Perno’s Pups!
BULLDOG BITES: ESPN.com’s Ivan Maisel has compiled a list of four coaches and four players who transcend college football and remain relevant long after they left the game. Again, no surprise here but Georgia’s Herschel Walker made the list, along with Red Grange, Archie Griffin and Tommie Frazier. As Maisel says, no one combined size and speed in as forceful a manner as Herschel, the first really super freshman to make an impact. Another well-deserved kudo to the player Dan Magill dubbed the “goal line stalker.” … Georgia’s two national champions (so far) this season, the Gym Dogs and the men’s tennis team, will be at the White House on Tuesday to meet the president as part of Championship Day. It’s been quite a year for UGA athletics. And it ain’t quite over yet!

These are good comments, Bill, about a great group of young men. I’m proud of them and appreciate the way they are representing the UGA both on the field and off.
I hope now that the host of this blog site will not let juvenile minds trash the thread to the point that it’s disgusting to read. A little razzing between fans is one thing but the racist, homophobic crap recently allowed on other AJC threads has been disgusting.

Could you Georgia fans give me your thoughts: I am a Chicago White Sox fan from the nearby south suburbs of Chicago. The ‘southsiders have YOUR player, Gordan Beckham, as our number one draft choice. The braintrust, including GM Kenny Williams, announcer Hawk Harrelson, and hitting coach Greg Walker, are really raving about him. And have said he may be in Chicago as soon as 2010. Is this kid, in YOUR EYES, having seen him alot, that good?

John, The Beckem kid is better than advertised! He just keeps playing great ball in the CWS. He is one of the most consistant college players I’ve ever seen. He was also a great high school football player (as a matter of fact he says football was his first love but he’s a better baseball player). So you are getting a great shortstop with a linebacker mentality. The best part is he is a kid with character and morals with a bit of self confidence. I’ll be watching him on the Chicago superstation in the near future.

Dear John..Beckham has a great deal of heart and disire in TWO sports, youand your city will NOT be disappointed in the choice. BTW, I grew up in Chicago, attended DePaul for two years, before transferring here. Do they still have the “Nightingale Club” as well as “Rawhides Disco”?? Great meeting places.

I’m not a college baseball fan, just an anything Gerogia Bulldog fan. I’veenjoyed the baseball run and hope we will it all.
As a non-basball follower, I’ve been most impressed with how much talent the state of Georgia apparently has in baseball players. Every ball player on Georgia’s starting roser and that I keep seeing play is from the state of Georgia, unlike many of the other teams I see. I had no idea.

I am the Head Coach of the 13 year old North Gwinnett baseball team that had the pleasure of being visited by Coach Perno and the rest of the Bulldog team at dinner last Thursday night. The coach and players are truly a class act and should be commended for their actions both on and off the field. In speaking with my players they both inspiring and enthusiastic. I just wanted to asy that the 13u North Gwinnett Bulldogs wish Coach Perno and the UGA Bulldogs good luck and it’s time to bring home the Championship!!!!

Doesn’t look good tonight. Umps had two really bad calls at bad times. The strike out - throw out that wasn’t a strike was horrible, and the bobbled ball by the Fresno 1st baseman cut short another rally. All things considered, the home plate ump was pretty bad for both, unfortunately it happened at a bad time for the dawgs. Hope they see their mistakes tomorrow and call a better game.
Bad calls aside, FS has played gutsy ball and has hit lights out. Hope they use all their hits up tonight. They’re definitely using a lot of em.

I had to turn the sound off last night — tired of hearing about torn thumb ligaments & 4 dislocated fingers… Please someone save us from Mike Patrick & Orel Hershiser!!!
Last night went badly - but we will make it up tonight. Bring that trophy home to Athens. GOOOOOOO DAWGS……

You’re not alone Marietta. BTW did you hear that Coach Perno came up to Gordon Beckham after the loss 2 years ago in the CWS and said “you will lead us back here”. Also, Massaneri has a new baby girl and “I sure hope she looks like mom!” har-dee-har-har! Patrick ran out of material before the CWS began.
Also, Fresno has been ranked in the preseason top 20 three years in a row so they’ve pretty much underachieved until now. Hope we can cool off their bats tonight. Go Dawgs!

HA HA HA….. West Coast baseball is simply better baseball than your east south boys. This is men against boys. Uga has no pitching. Ha… our # 9 guy even went BIG YARD on your pitching. UGAs boys need to hit the weight room and have better conditioning. All of our young men have been going Yard on everyone. UGA is way overrated. Just like the football team. WAC Baseball Rules. How about those doggs!!!!!! Fresno St Dogs!!!!!! Your guys make to many stupid wild pitches and watch balls drop in front of them. I cant understand how UGA is even in the CWS. There is no doubt the umps missed a couple of calls last night. However, I don’t think the bad calls would have affected the overall outcome of the game. For those of you who believe there are only two Fresno fans at the game shouldn’t watch the game with the mute button on. Go Dogs!!!!!!

Fresno State is playing good ball, but I would not bet money on the outcome tonight either way. If UGA comes out mad, and I think they will, then they can score easily. If our pitching holds up then I like our odds. By the way, UGA would beat Fresno State about 77-10 in football, you can bet on that (just ask Hawaii).

Correct, UGA fans are the most arrogant and uneducated sports fans in the nation, and this is the main reason why most D-1 programs laugh at their program.
They always think they are great, when actually they are not. They go around barking and yelling, with nothing to back it up. They get excited about finishing second, then call it “domination.” What a joke!
Most importantly, they can never give credit where credit is due and typically find some excuse like poor officiating to make them feel better.
Bottom line is, California has superior talent in athletics which was proven in the CWS when Fresno State gave UGA a severe beatdown.

To Grady Hospital administrators, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry. I had to call in. Had I known ahead of time that it would’ve been a waste of time, I would have never went.
