Doing it the hard way

More random thoughts of a Bulldog nature …

• It’s almost bizarre the way David Perno’s Diamond Dogs continue to follow patterns: great teams every other year, a penchant for winning NCAA tournaments the hard way by losing early and then having to move up through the losers bracket. So they’ve done it again, and in the sweetest way possible, dispatching the rivals from North Avenue in a pounding Monday night where a mercy rule would have been in order.

Now it’s a Super Regional at Foley Field in Athens, with North Carolina State the hurdle between UGA and another trip to the College World Series. They play at noon Friday and Saturday and, as they say, if necessary at 4 p.m. Sunday. Hey, this is Georgia baseball we’re talking about. The odds are pretty good they’ll be playing Sunday.

• It was good to see USA Today run a feature this week on what a baseball talent hotbed the state of Georgia has become in recent years. The paper noted the way Perno has built the UGA program on mostly in-state talent, and prominently featured were SEC pitcher of the year Josh Fields, who was named 2008 national stopper of the year Wednesday, and big-hitting shortstop Gordon Beckham, who’s one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur baseball player.

The recognition is particularly gratifying for Fields, who turned down a chance to sign with the Braves last year in order to play one more year in Athens. If that happened more often, maybe UGA’s every-other-season success rate would skip the off years.

• You can’t sum up the current state of the athletic rivalry between the Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets (and the shift in state dominance in baseball) better than did a banner some students erected on the Kudzu Hill fence overlooking Foley Field Monday: “Give us your lunch money, nerds.”

• The Athens Banner-Herald had a story the other day on former Redcoat Band member Lloyd Winstead, who turned up a rare piece of sheet music for Georgia’s original school fight song, which is so old and forgotten that even Dan Magill and Fred Birchmore don’t remember it. It’s called “Red and Black March” and was written in 1908 by R.E. Haughey, who was director of what at the time was called the University Cadet Band.

Winstead, associate director of UGA’s Wilson Center for Humanities and Arts, said he sent a copy to the Redcoat Band’s director “to see if it’s something the band could play.” Well, one factor in its favor is that it doesn’t mention a certain former athletic director in the title, so perhaps it won’t get on Mikey Adams’ banned list like “Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs.”

UGa wont be scoring runs in bunches against the NC State pitching lineup.

No need for the “Give us your lunch money” comment.

I am a UGA alum and get so tired of the “nerds” thing.

They knew what was going to happen Monday night. We knew what was going to happen Monday night. We all know what is going to happen when UGA and Gtu get together.

Let’s just be magnamimous about our victories and prop our own teams up, not continually belittle our opponents.

Lighten up Joe. It is clearly a harmless joke. Anybody offended by it deserves to be called a nerd. It is certainly no worse than the Techie’s attempt to stereotype every single UGA football player as an illiterate thug.

It’s called “good old fashion hate for reason”. Do you think GT would holds back if we play in their stadium? I remember going to the UGA v GT football game 3 years ago when some GT students had UGA sucks spelled out on a nearby building using lasers. The nerds used lasers for Pete’s sake. It’s all in good fun and should not be taken personally. If a banner or lasers ruins your day, you need to work on your self esteem.

This blog is awful, as usual. Leave it to the real sportswriters to talk about the Dawgs and go write a cutline.

For the record, the every other year has less to do w/ Perno and more to do w/ UGA’s All-American closer not being able to get anyone out the following year: See Startup in 05 when the Dawgs missed the SEC Tourney by a half game and Fields in 07.

Bill, I note in your piece today, June 5th, your mention of Dr. Adam’s banning of a Dooley-associated song played by the band. I assume you were kidding. If that’s true, it’s another indication of the “small” mind of our university president. I can’t believe you were serious; can you confirm? Thanks.

Gee, can we spot which poster maybe has some sort of grudge against the writer that has nothing to do with UGA sports?

Sure, it’s all lasers and banners until someone get’s their eye put out.

I keed, I keed. While I enjoyed a Dawg victory Monday night as much as anyone, our friends from Tech did not play their best game.

PS Do not start a Freshman in what could be the last game of the season.

Joe, I agree with you. I understand that the nerds comment is felt to be a joke, but I feel it is wrong. Maybe I am overly sensitive since I have several wonderful friends who are Tech alums and my son is going there in the fall.

wcg, I have little doubt that your son is a wonderful and intelligent person that will make great contributions to the world. Nevertheless, he is a nerd. You just don’t get it do you? Loosen the tie up and live a little.

I happen to agree with Joe. I would hardly even refer to tech as a “rival” anymore. Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee are our true rivals these days.

And Bill, a Tech fan would respond by saying “Bill, check out your picture on the blog. You are obviously a fat, redneck who purchased a combot hat/t-shirt at Walmart like most of your fellow Uga fans.” Please note I didn’t say alumni because 3/4’s of your fans couldn’t get in to any college, much less one who allows student athletes to study Consumer Economics where one learns to balance a checkbook.

I think ‘Go Pack” is a what we are doing. After 2 weeks of winning tournaments at home, we’re heading to Omaha.

Best I can figure, only one team in the US of A did this: went to a BCS bowl game, played in the NCAA b’ball tournament, and is in the CWS. Bonus round of NCAA: M/W tennis tournaments (Men’s NC), women’s gymnastics (won NC), women’s softball tournament, M/W golf tournaments, M/W swimming tournaments, men’s track tournament. Won’t even mention the SEC c’ships won, or the 2 Rhodes Scholars.

“GoPack”, maybe you missed yesterdays game. No runs in bunches, huh? Did you make it past the first inning? Heck, did you even make it to the fist out of the first inning? The woofless pack had to burn 3 pitchers in the first inning. How does the team ERA look now? The game was such a rout that ESPN couldn’t stand it any longer and switched games ……..sheesh. At least the woofless pack could have made a game of it so I didn’t have to watch LSU. Remember GoPack, it is always better to do your gloating AFTER you know the outcome. I know I am typing in vain because you don’t have the guts to show back up. Typical ACC crap. Oh yikes, guess I might have to eat those words myself because we gotta face #1 Miami. At least we get to face the BEST of the ACC, if not all of college baseball this year. But, congratulations to the ACC for getting 3 teams in the CWS. Congratulations Wolf Pack on a great season. Sorry you have a big mouth fan like GoPack. (like we don’t have any at UGA…lol). Play well Dawgs!

Ol’ Dawg: Didn’t mean to slight the horses, but I was concentrating on the NCAA-recognized stuff. Proud of all Dawgs, though. One of these days the horses will get their due, and we can go back and pick up 3 more (at least) c’ships for our total.
