Playing favorites

It was sort of a mixed week in the Bulldog Nation. The baseball team once again continued its strange tradition of falling on its face in the SEC Tournament after winning the regular season championship. Of course, they’re still going to be in the NCAA Tournament, though they didn’t do themselves any favors regarding seeding. On the other hand, UGA picked up an unexpected national championship as the men’s tennis team took the title for the second year in a row. Dan Magill’s legacy continues to shine in the hands of Manuel Diaz.

Oh, and it came out that one of the football players had been arrested on a suspected DUI and likely will miss a game. Not good, but with only two other arrests so far, Mark Richt’s Dawgs certainly are having a less troublesome off-season than had been the case in recent years. Fingers crossed that no more members of the team run afoul of the law this year, but college students being the way they are (and always have been), that may be bucking the odds.

Speaking of football, always on the minds of the Bulldog Nation (with only about 14 weeks left until the season gets under way), a friend posed a seemingly easy question to me the other day that, on reflection, wasn’t so easy. What, he asked, is your favorite Georgia football game ever?

No-brainer, I thought at first. The Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame for the national championship.

But then I thought about it some more. Certainly it capped my favorite season of Georgia football. And was the most important win by the Bulldogs. But was it really my favorite game? Herschel played hurt for much of the game, and it certainly wasn’t our best offensive showing that season. Perhaps that’s not really my all-time FAVORITE game.

But if not that one, which game would be the favorite? My mind ran back over great days on the gridiron for the Dawgs dating back to the era of Fran Tarkenton, when I first really started following Georgia football at about age 6. The 1965 shocker over reigning national champion Alabama came to mind, of course. Any number of wins over the Gators, too, including Appleby-to-Washington, Buck to Lindsay in 1980, and toppling top-ranked Florida in 1985. Plus 21-0 over Bama in 1976, the loudest game I ever heard at Sanford Stadium before they enclosed the one side; 10-to-9 in Dallas; the hobnail boot in Knoxville; and, just this past fall, that crazy day with the team flooding the end zone in Jacksonville … all favorites.

But I think the biggest rivalry has to come into play in picking an all-time favorite game. And there have been SO MANY great wins over the Yellow Jackets, both the come-from-behind variety like 1997 at Grant Field, and the butt-kickings like that glorious 51-7 afternoon Between the Hedges in 2002.

Then it came to me. My all-time favorite Georgia football game. Thanksgiving night on national TV at Historic Grant Field in Atlanta, and Andy Johnson leading the Bulldogs down the field in the last minute and a half, completing four passes before Jimmy the Greek vaulted over for the score.

Yes, I think that 28-24 win is my favorite, not because it was the greatest game I ever saw, although certainly it was one of the most exciting. No, I think it’s probably my favorite because I went to school with Andy, played touch football with him in junior high, cheered him and the other Athens High Trojans on at old Death Valley, and went through UGA at the same time. And if I were to pick my all-time favorite Bulldog players, Andy would rank way up there.

Those are just some of the intangibles that go into picking your favorite game or favorite team in college football.

And that’s one of the reasons why it’s my favorite sport.

What ever happened to Jimmy the Greek Poulos, and Glen Harrison ?? Jimmy was a few years older than me, but was a very nice person, very down to earth, and a thrill to watch run with the ball.

Andy J and the win over Tech in 1971 is certainly a favorite of mine, too.

But for sheer favorite game from beginning to end, I think I have to go with 51-7!

This is going to sound strange, but my favorite game was probably Penn St. in the Sugar Bowl, 1982. I know it was a loss, but it was the first game I can remember watching, and becomeing a die hard Georgia Bulldog fan. Another great game was the 1984 Citrus Bowl against FSU. The 17-17 tie was important to me because my brother is die Noles fan, and that was the first time I saw these two teams play.

My all time favorite game has to be vs. Auburn in 2002. I remember breaking the arm of the couch jumping up and down. Alot of people might forget who Michael Johnson is, but i wont!! And also, even tho it was a loss, WVU in the Sugar Bowl in 2005.

Gotta be FL in ‘76…Gators led a halftime, probably by less than they should have. We kickoff, hold them and on 4th down, Doug Dickey runs a trick play (the original 4th & dumb). We stop them and go on to score more touchdowns than they got 1st downs in the 2nd half. Classic win!

Certainly the NC Victory against ND was one of the most masterfully coached and executed defensive games in college football history. To have beaten ND in NO for the NC was an incredible experience for Ga Fans.

I think it ties though with “The Miracle On Duval Street” that same year. “Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott……….,,”.

I was fortunate to have been at both. While leaving the stadium at Jax we heard that Ga. Tech. had tied ND and everyone when crazy.

This would be one of my favorites, the four overtimes against the tigers in auburn alabama. My wife and I were thinking we were going to lose and left with a couple of minutes left in the game. We were just about to get into the vehicle and heard someone shout that we had tied it up. Knowing we couldn’t get back into the game we drove 10 miles to our hotel room. The hotel had the TV on in the lobby and the game was still going and people there thought we had gone crazy. We were able to get to our room and finish watching the game on TV. Needless to say we’ve never left any other game early since that day.

My all time favorite game is the 1971 Ga vs GT game on Thanksgiving night at Grant Field when the Dawgs drove the length of the field in the last couple of minutes and Jimmy Poulus scored snatching victory from defeat. Also my second favorite game is the 1967 Cotton Bowl victory over SMU.

I agree with S.E. Dawg and the first overtime game UGA played under the new rules - against Auburn. Back and forth and back and forth what seemed like forever. At the time, we were driving through L.A. (lower Alabama) to go to Panama City and the game kept fading in and out on the radio, but I refused to switch to an Auburn station even though they were plentiful where we were. I was constantly on the edge of my seat with the game and with the frequent absence of a radio signal. Of course there are plenty of other favorites, but this one seemed to captivate me because of the situation.

Mine is the 1978 game against Tech. It was a cold day and people had been camping out on the bridge since Thursday night. We were down when Buck Belue replaced Jeff Pyburn. Heck, there were people on top of the Chemistry building. Belue brought the ‘Dogs back along with Amp Arnold to beat Tech 29 to 28.

1988/89 Mazda Gator Bowl. My friend’s dad caught the flu and his family invited me to travel with them to Jax for the game. I was a huge Tim Worley fan, but Rodney Hampton dominated for the Dawgs. On the other sideline were CFB stars, Andre Rison, Blake Ezor, and Tony Mandarich. Seemed like we were poised to KO the Spartans of Mich State many times, but Rison would always make an incredible play to keep them alive. This epic battle was capped off by a victoriuos post game celebration in honor of Coach Dooley’s last game. He could not have shown more class. My friend and I met him at the team’s hotel. He was about to get on the elevator, when we caught his attention. He invited us on and signed autographs as the elevator traveled up to his floor. I was just an elementary school kid, so it was like meeting the president. It was a night I will never forget. Thanks for the memories, Coach Dooley!

A couple not so obvious choices:

How about the 1965 game at Michigan giving the Wolverines a beat down in the big house?

How about the 1985 Fla. game? UF had been named # 1 the prior Monday for the first time in school history. UGA crushed a team loaded with bought and paid for soon-to-be All-Pros 27-3.

The 1986 Auburn ‘hose game’ is another. Our starting QB was out. We were unranked. Auburn was #6. Beat ‘em 20-16 (I think.) A few of our fans decided to get a closer look at the turf at Jordan-Hare and were met with water cannons. Then they turned them on the fans in the stands. Auburn=No class and sore losers.

The 1997 Cocktail Party is another favorite. Our only win over UF vs. SOS when we were 17.5 point underdogs.

Finally, beating UT in 2000 at Sanford after losing to Tenn. 9 straight (a longer streak than the gators ever had by the way) was a nice change.

As you can see, I like the underdog role. Due to CMR I’m having to adjust to being the favorite all the time.

I agree with Chazz - I had picked the Butler kick against Clempson before I read any responses. The kick went 60 yard and may have never come back down. Clempson nearly scored again but we held. That was the only game I remember where the UGA students stayed after the game for at least 30 minutes screaming. I spoke in a whisper for about 2 days after that game.

2002 Georgia-Auburn: I was a freshman in high school and went with my friend, his dad, and my dad. I was so dejected that we had choked away the SEC title that I almost couldn’t even watch Greene’s TD pass. When Michael Johnson caught it, that was the wildest celebration I’ve ever been a part of- I’ve never hugged so many random people in my life, and I was just 14. I have a framed picture of that play in my room.

Oops, forgot to mention a few. This year had a bunch of great games; I was at Bama, Florida, and Auburn and each one was incredible in totally different ways. In 1998 we beat South Carolina 17-3- I was in 4th grade and that was the first road game I ever went on.

Five big Tech games stand out. In 1997, we had almost turned off the TV before Bobo brought us back 27-24. In 1999, when we “lost” after the “fumble,” I broke a Christmas tree ornament and actually cried (I was 10), I was so angry. Obviously, no one can forget 2002; 51-7 is all that needs to be said. The 2005 game was unbeliveable- the sick looks of the Tech fans as they left the stadium were priceless. The 2006 Tech game was epic; I was sitting in the student section under the scoreboard, so Massoquoi caught that pass literally 30 feet in front of me.

Some more: 2001 and 2003 Tennessee were the only two times I ever saw my mother scream at a TV. Thank you Verron Haynes and Sean Jones. The 2006 Auburn game was the first “real” road game I ever attended as a college student- totally ridiculous.

Wow, picking your favorite game is like choosing the best Beatles album. Hopefully next season will give us all a bunch more games to add to our lists.

It would have to be Belue-to-Scott because of the smug looks I saw on nearby Gaytor fans turning to jawdropping disbelief in an instant. Beautiful. But, I would like to pay homage to the ‘57 Tech-GA game at Grant Field which ended “The Drought” of eight straight losses to the insects. I actually attended that one as a nine year-old. I’ll never forget the jubilation of the red and black-clad fans as Theron Sapp burst over the goal line for the game’s only TD, and then again, as they joyfully left the stadium. I can guarantee you, the really old-time fans would agree on that one.

Would have to say the Florida win last year and Coach’s ways of coaching for emotion as much as X’s and O’s. That was incredibly fun to watch and I loved how the players described the feeling of playing with freedom and joy after having messed up for 30 yards of penalties after the end zone thing. We’ve already messed horribly with Coach’s permission, so hey, don’t have to worry about avioding mistakes anymore and just play for broke. A good life lesson about living in grace —— hey, live all out for God since God has already paid the price.

The 21-0 spanking of Alabama and the Hound’s Tooth Hat in 1976. Pass over the middle to a wide open tight end for a TD and the crowd erupts into a maelstrom of noise and the stadium shook. My first game at Sanford stadium, 50 yard line, FREE ticket. Priceless!

Y’all must not be as old as me. My favorite game was the 1959 Georgia Auburn game. Fran Tarkington threw a touchdown pass to Bill Herron with less than a minute left to tie the game at 13-13. Then our kicker Durward Pennington calmly kicked the PAT to clinch the win and the SEC title. Why was Durward so calm? Later he said it was because he thought our Dawgs were ahead — so no pressure on him!

I also recall some students holding up a banner at halftime saying, “You Can’t Beat Our Butts!”

Those bugs in atl sure are giving us some nice practice before our bowl games. Id say if i had to choose my fav ga vs tech game it would be 51-7. It was such a fun game to be at (nevermind the cold and rain) . It was amazing to see Boss Bailey block that field goal.
P.S. Thank you for putting a stain on this blog nerds. Appreciate it. Maybe if you put as much effort into supporting your own team as you do writing on the UGA blogs on AJC then yall might actually win one of these years.

Id have to say definitely the Verron Haynes catch… A mid 50s inebriated Tennessee woman in front of me turned and started pounding me in the face with her bourbon soaked pom pom after they scored towards the end… she and her husband were quickly escorted out by a state trooper, but I just wish she was there after the catch so I could have enjoyed the look on her face! We even stayed and sang “Rocky Top” in satire after the game until we were politely asked to exit the stadium!

Anything to keep you off the intenet. My favorite was ‘85 in Atlanta. The fog was everywhere. Henderson and Worley spent the whole night in their own backfield.

Easily the championship game against ND. A tight game to the end, I can still remember the announcer screaming = with about one minute to go - “Woerner intercepts and Georgia’s going to win the national championship.”

I was in a buiding in NC, by myself working as a security guard while I was in grad school, and I screamed with tears running down my face as my hero, Vince Dooley, was carried off the field. It still brings tears as I think about it.

You tell ‘em “Dawg Fan” and “Swinford Dawg.” Those Star Trek watching, Dungeon and Dragon playin’ nerds ain’t got nothing on the STATE university. Ha. You’re right Swinford, if they would just put as much energy and commitment into supporting them Yeller Jackets like we do our beloved Bulldawgs then they might be better than us. That’s how the games are decided, you dang right. Forget the fact that our recruiting base is much larger, leading to the fact that guys like me can hide over here in Athens for 3 - 4 years without taking much of anything. My favorite class I took was that “Coaching” class.

Now they’ll say they’ve won a national title more recent than we has, but we all know that a little school like that couldn’t have really done that. Not with the big STATE university just down the road. And how about that disgrace Joe Hamilton. Glad we don’t have anything like that ever happened to our grand program. I mean, what a joke those nerds are. Next they’ll remind us of H. Walkers Russian Roullette ordeal, or the fact that our best two players from the big-two sports (Dominique and Herschel) never graduated from these hallowed halls. I guess I’ll have to hear about Jan Kemp or that Harrick Sr/Jr situation. As if I didn’t hear about that enough on Jay Leno and David Letterman. Hey, is my buddy Odell Thurman out of prison again? Dawg Fan and Swinford, let’s meet up with Odell for a cold one.

Oh yeah, my favorite game is still the 51-48 game in Atlanta. Although we tried to get that one changed to show a “w” it will always go down as a loss. Dang it.

Georgia has certainly broke the hearts of alot of opposing fans over the years, but I have never seen anything that approaches the looks on their faces after that game. I would have to say the big Kick by Butler is one that I will always cherish in Bulldog history. I was listening to Larry on the radio and at halftime I had to run to the convenience store to get my dad some more Coke for his Jack Daniel’s. While I was gone my Dad told me that my die hard Klimpson cousin had phoned and asked “Whats wrong with the Dawgs?” The rest is wonderful history listening to Larry make the great call and for a second or two wondering if Butler’s kick was good. I called my cousin back after the kickoff in which Klimpson ran it a good ways back. My cousin argued that there was still time on the clock and that Klimpson was gonna try for a field goal, but nooooo time had expired! Go DAWGS!!!

Just last year stomping on a schools logo, (VANDY at that) storming the field after a touchdown not a win, and whining like the biggest group of Idiots after not making it to the nc game after not even playing for your own division championship and losing twice( once by 20 plus points) Yea what a joke to say another school does not have class.

My favorite game would have to be the 1981 Georgia-Florida game. I partied in Athens all night, got a few hours sleep. I went to the Clarke Co. airport and got on a Cessna with my buddy Burke piloting and flew over Georgia at about 12000 feet to JAX. When we got over Fla we dropped to 3000 feet and I almost lost my breakfast from the turbulance. Got on a shuttle and was given some liquid medication by some Dawg fans and made it into the stadium. Our team was fired up having already tasted defeat by Clemson that year. The Gators came out flat and Herschel ran over them like a freight train. By the end of the game, the entire stadium was red and black. Not a single piece of orange clothing in sight since UF wore white that year. 44-0. We laughed, we cheered, we hugged complete strangers. We left after the band quit playing and made our way back to the airfield. We were in the air when a pilot came over the radio and said, “The Dawgs have just taken off from Jax international”. All radio protocol must have been broken as I heard, How bout dem Dawgs, Go Dawgs, barking and cheers, one after the other. Jax international told us to quiet down. I fell into peaceful slumber somewhere past the St. Mary’s river and did not wake till we landed in Athens. What a great day. And what a great day to be a Dawg*.

Many memorable games mentioned:

Three Auburn games stand out for me, the hose ‘em game 20-16 in the late 80’s, UGA’s first overtime the quadruple marathon against AU, and of course the 2002 SEC East clinching featuring Michael Johnson in the back of the end zone.

For TN: The hobnail was a classic, but I also have a soft spot for the much less heralded 1987? TN game where we crushed them at home and a downpour started in the 4th quarter, but nobody cared about the weather. The OL dominated. Larry Munson said “Lemont Tellis and Todd Wheeler are burying people along the offensive lines, JUST BURYING PEOPLE!

SC Bird: I was there and it had to be one of the lowest points in UGA football over the past 20 years and thus a great moment for USC.

We were confident going into the game, one of UGA’s most talented teams in years (coming off the Goff years and first few Donnan) and we absolutely got it handed to us by your Gamecocks. It was a stunning upset!

Gator Chomp:

Dawg fans can remember old times fondly because we didn’t play for 50 plus years before we won an SEC title the way the Gators did. UGA actually has a long and storied tradition with some valleys but many peaks. The current success of the Richt era, the mostly difficult 90’s, the storied 80’s. The painful 50’s when tech was actually a powerhouse and the great teams of the 40’s

Florida Football seamingly started about 1992 and going back any further only dredges up painful thoughts for Gators fans.

Old Gold:

I would absolutely pay $100 a year on my Sat system to watch nothing but old UGA games. Excellent idea.

Of course, we Dawg fans have the recent past, present and future to enjoy including not having lost to tech in this century! finishing 2nd in the polls last season, 2 recent SEC titles, finishing in the top 10 5 out of last 6 years and having a pretty good squad returning for 08.

I only go back to my freshman yr in 1975..but Ive had season tix since then..33 yrs and counting. I have attended over 200 games home and away. Here is my Top 10 for that period..(couldnt limit it to 5.) After the first 2..its an 8 way tie for 3rd.

1975-2007.

1-Ga over NDame for Natl title 1-1-01 2-GA over Fla 1980. Run Lindsay! 3—Georgia 21 Alabama 0 1976. for many reasons not the least of which was the party on S Milledge afterwards. 4-Ga over Tennessee 2000. Finally. 5-Ga over Clemson 1991 the same night the Braves clinched worst to first..what a crowd 6-Geogia 16 Tenn 15 1980. Who was that truck, Bill Bates? 7-Georgia 10 Texas 9 Cotton Bowl following 1983 season..we won on late td and cost Tex the natl title. 8-Georgia 37 Fla 17-1997.sweet sweet sweet. 9-Georgia 29 Georgia Tech 28 1978..best GA Tech game in 33 yrs IMO.Down 17-0 at one time. 10-P44 Haynes..Ga whips Tenn in 2001: Richt is for real.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Auburn Black Out game 1975 Ga/Tech game..on natl tv TG night..42-0 at halftime. 1986 Ga beats Auburn between the Hoses 1985 (I think) Butler long FG beats Clemson 1981 Georgia 44 Tenn 0 1982 (might have been 1981) Georgia 44 Florida 0

I attended all 15 games above except the 1984 Cotton Bowl.

I hope to add a new one to the list this year The only game above that I did not attend was the 1984 Cotton Bowl.

Florida 1982. They were supposed to beat us that year. I forget who their QB was, but he was pretty good. Final Score Georgia 44 Florida 0. Yeah, Florida was supposed to win, but never had a chance. Early in the game, Jeff Sanchez made an interception in the end zone that started the landslide.

I would say another of my favorites would be GA vs GT. At half time the tech band placed their logo over the G a midfield. A lone UGA cheerleader tried to scoop it up but missed. After that I couldn’t tell you a note the band was playing. Every UGA fan booed the whole time the band was on the field. A freshmen Bobo had to come into the game and through his first touchdown pass. A Tech lady near us looked at the program and said “oh my gosh he’s a freshmen”.

Lowcountry, that was Florida 1981. In 82 we beat them by the same score as 80, 26-21. I believe Wayne Peace was Florida’s QB in 1981. The Gators had this awesome All-American defensive lineman who was supposed to keep Herschel from gaining a yard. Needless to say he was not a factor in the game.

My favorite UGa. game I have to go with the 1980, 26-21 win over the lizards. Buck and Lindsey will forever live on in my memory. I was unable to attend or view on TV but the venerable Larry Munson paints as vivid a picture as any HD Plasma set I’ve ever seen.

As far as GeorgiaTech games, I love any Tech game where they lose, obviously. I am even more enamored when they get embarrased. Like the year Reggie Ball “Forgot” what down it was and basically shot his team in their collective foot.

Tech will never have a GREAT team. They may eventually have a good team with CPJ. Tech can’t recruit GREAT players. Calvin Johnson was the best player I’ve seen come out of Tech in recent years and now look at him. He is not even performing in the NFL. Look at his last game against Georgia

I think he caught ONE pass. Pitiful for an All American. Greg Blue rung his bell a time or two.

Tech fans will always be beligerent towards Georgia fans because they know they will always lose to the Dawgs. Sure, they may win one from time to time but as the saying goes “Even a blind hog finds an acorn sometimes” or “Even a BROKE clock is right 2 times a day”.

I love it, thats what tech is, A BROKE CLOCK.

Georgia Tech reminds me of the Hillary Clinton campaign. Why doesn’t Hillary just quit? Obama is going to win the nomination, she is just spending money for no good reason.

Why doesn’t Tech just quit trying to put a competitive football team on the field? The worst thing Tech ever did was to get out of the SEC. The reason they did was they couldn’t compete. They tried to find their way as an independent for several years, that fell flat.

Then along came the ACC. They are “Bush league”. Tech can’t even play there.

I say to the Tech fans, Encourage your AD to just disband the football team and stick with something you know like…..basketball or lacrosse. Football is too difficult for the North Ave. Trade School.

Quit football and become Georgia fans during the football season. Georgia can even schedule a game against another SEC team and play at Ga. Tech’s stadium…… Nope! can’t do that, not enough room in the stands for the Georgia fans, let alone fans from another SEC school.

Hey Tech fans, How’s it going to feel when Clemson comes to the Ga. Dome to play BAma and they blow away any attendance records Tech has ever had?

Tech Sucks!

Dang Bird-Dog - have a thing against Tech????

My dad went to Tech - and I grew up going to both UGA and Tech games. Loved them both - but I knew as a kid in the 70’s that there was something more inspirational about going to games in Athens.

With that said, I wish both teams would be undefeated going into the “Good Ole Fashion Hate” game - and UGA always winning handily as a tune up for the SEC Title game.

Would be proud if any of my kids graced the Tech campus - what an awesone school. Our State is blessed to have such educational opportunity - UGA - TOP 25 Public Universtiy - Tech - Top 5 Nationally respected Engineering school.

I’ve been to a lot of great games over the years. I don’t know if it one of Georgia’s greatest games ever, but it’s not in anyone’s list, and it lines up in my memory as one of my favorite road trips ever.

11 AM on January 1, 2000. Nursing one hell of a hangover and being glad the apocolypse had not occured 11 hours earlier, I watched the Dawgs come from 25 down to beat Drew Breeze and Purdue in OT.

This game was the perfect example of the complete frustration and complete joy that the Donnan/Carter era could bring to a fan. Got our butts kicked in the first half playing terribly only to overwhelm the Boilermakers with pure athletic dominance in teh second. The comeback was classic Carter. He threw a touchdown into triple coverage so hard that it rattled off of two defenders before McMicheal reeled it in for the score.

8-4 and a bowl victory in Northern Florida. That was Donnan in a nutshell, but man was it exciting.

Cuz the 1982 Fl game was 44-0 81 and 80 were won by the same score 26 to 21. After the 82 game UGA was elevated to #1 in both polls, but sadly went on the lose the MNC to Penn State 27-23.

By the way, my favorite game is still probably the 4 overtime game against Auburn in 1996. I sat in the worst endzone seats imaginable. I lost my voice for 2 or 3 days after that one.

There have been so many over the years, but I especially enjoyed the 10-9 win over Texas in the 1984 Cotton Bowl. UGA supposedly had no business winning that game without Herschel Walker, but the defense played the game of their lives and held a mighty Texas team to 3 field goals. The CBS announcers had JUST gotten it out of their mouths that Texas would make a mistake on special teams and give UGA a chance to win it when, BAM!! Texas fumbled a punt and UGA was in business. The rest is history…..John Lastinger on an option run around the right side of the Texas D to squirm into the corner of the end zone for the winning points. The pylon was stuck on the back of Lastinger’s jersey. If it wasn’t for that, I dont know if the referees would have signaled for the score. What time is it in Texas? 10 to 9, baby!!!

Was it the 51-7 beat-down we put on the urine and white in 02? Nah, maybe it was the game where Reggie Ball went out of bounds, pushed a student-assistant to the ground, and got tossed. No, wait….was it the game where Ball threw the ball out of bounds on 4th down? No, I think it has got to be in 06, whenever Yech supposedly had such a great team, UGA was supposedly crap, and we STILL beat them anyway. Didn’t Ball throw a game-ending interception into the end-zone from the 10 in that game to throw away another chance for Yech to win? That Reggie Ball was an absolute MASTER at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when it came to the UGA/Yech games. Ball was the best player UGA had during those years.

1982 Clemson game, the fight under the lights. The year before Clemson beat us and took some of the luster off the 1980 championship. Then of course they won the 1981 NC. Danny Ford when asked how it felt to beat the previous year’s National Champs replied, “Now the easy part of our schedule is over.” We seethed all year. Put up temporary lights in Sanford and played on Monday night Labor Day, our first game, on ABC. Herschel had hurt his thumb and we used him as a decoy. We would fake the ball to Herschel and give it to Tron “Electron” Jackson. I forget the score and I even watched this one sober as I had to drive one of the team busses to the stadium. I just remember a glorius game and celebration. They got to enjoy their championship even less. Never seen such crestfallen fans leave a stadium. I kept on letting each one that passed me know that the easy part of our schedule was over.

Favorite game. So many to pick from. Naturally, anytime we smack the gnats. It’ll be nice when they start playing football again at that run down trade school. Ga. Southern gives us more competetion. Yes, well, consider the source of that comment on the easy part of Clemson’s schedule being over, and then look at where Coach (and I use that term loosely) Ford is today. Ford wouldn’t even be able to coach HS ball with his record of cheating and general all around thuggishness today.

My first UGA game ever attended is my favorite with Florida leading 9-3 we drove 99 yards in the 4th quarter to win 10-9 in 1983 (the yr. after Herschel) what was great to see was how much florida thought they had a chance to whip us because we didn’t have him and we still beat them.

I would have to say 1997 win over the Gators. 20 point underdogs to a 37-17 win. Partying in the rain at the athletic dorms to greet the team as they rolled in. That and the 1996 OT win at Auburn are tops. We were watching at a house close to downtown, and at the buzzer we ran out to great the fans piling out of the stadium. Me and two other Dawg fans found a hydrant on a corner, and started barking at all the fans coming by. We were lucky to survive, in retrospect, since I found out the corner we picked was on the President’s lawn!

Dunwoody, maybe I disremember the year incorrectly. The next year Florida’s scout team in preperation for the battle of Jacksonville were perplexed when they got their jerseys. Each scout team jersey had the number 44. When one player asked the coach why all the jerseys had the same number the coach replied, “That is why you are on the scout team.”

Another personal favorite moment of mine was seeing the Alabama fans unleash enough garbage in the end zone to fill up a landfill when UGA took it to their a*******es in OT last season. Indeed, whenever I hear someone who roots for Bama say that UGA is classless, I have a flash-back to that moment.

It must be a ritual that happens only in Alabama, because I see it happen 2 other times a year at Talladega whenever Earnhardt, Jr. chokes and loses another race up there.

My favorite was one that I was at-The 2006 Chick fila Bowl come from behind win againest Virginia Tech. The onside kick, Matthew Stafford’s composure, and the stifeling defense led by Tony Gilbert carried over to the 2007 season success.

I don’t know if it carried over into 2007 after the loss to USC east and the beatdown in Knoxville. I think the team did not have focus until the stop at Vandy. Then they seemed to be united in spirit and effort. Finished the second half of the season in a style I did not expect, especially after the first half of the season. I am hoping that the teamwork from 2007 carries over to 2008 but only time will tell. Play em one at a time. First up, our cousins from South Georgia.

There are so many great games, but the opening game of the 1982 season against Clemson. The night the Lights went on in Georgia. ABC T.V. paid for the stadium lights. Prime time coverage between the two defending national champs. When we blocked that punt and recovered in the end zone for the win, the stadium was the loudest I had ever heard. Remember, Herschel had the broken thumb, and Dooley would not play him. He came in as a decoy on a play action pass. The entire Tiger defense tackled him, but we were offsides on the play. A great 13-7 win.

Typical Florida fans. When we win, it’s because they had Zook coaching, or because Tebow was hurt. However, when we had to play them in 05 without Shockley, we weren’t allowed to say well, if Shockley hadn’t been injured…….I suspect that if Shockley hadn’t been injured, we would have won 3 of the last 4 from UF, but we will never know. I suppose UF’s DEFENSE was injured, too, the way UGA was ringing up points on em like a pinball machine.

The way they talk, you would think they have absolutely NO football history prior to 1990….Oh, wait, that’s right, they really don’t. For 50 plus years, they were the stepchildren of this conference. Learn to accept it, Lizards…..this series is about to become a real rivalry again.

Gamecock Gary, no way the worn out old ball coach is gonna win even at home this year. Ya’ll have a target painted on the side of that stadium. We are going to hit it with the twin cruise missles of Moreno and King.

DWG, it may not be a great college town on a weeknight, but I have always enjoyed attending the game in Columbia. Well except for that one time we lost.

I have many favorites but the 1970 Auburn game is one I will remember forever. AU had a great team and already had a Sugar Bowl bid, but held out for the Orange Bowl. They had to beat 4-4 UGA. My Dad had tickets and had promised to take My High School Sweetheart and Me to Auburn for the game. He tried to back out saying that the Dogs had “no chance” but My Mom shamed Him into going. Well the Dogs beat the heii out of the Tigers on Their home field and ended Their Orange Bowl hopes. We did not know how sick My Dad was and that this game would be His last, but that day he laughed out loud. I never saw Him enjoy a game more.

Thanks for sharing Shane. Reminds me of Buck, his last game was the beatdown in JAX last year. He knew going that it would take time off his life, but he wanted to see his Dawgs in person one more time. I still have a picture collage of him attending the game. I miss that old codger.

Mine definitely has to be the UGA v Auburn game in 2006, no doubt. We had just come off loosing to Kentucky and we were having a horrible season to that point. We lost to Vanderbilt on a field gaol and had loss to Vandy, Tennessee, Florida, and Kentucky. It was not good to be a Georgia Bulldog. Then little old Georgia came into Auburn and beat the #5 team in the nation, knocking them out of the BCS.

No big name TV station wanted to pick us up, so Jefferson Pilot picked us up for an 11am kickoff. Auburn fans were not worried at all about us, there was no way their Auburn Tigers were going to loose to beaten down Georgia. Then Georgia just broke out. Stafford had one of his best games in a Georgia uniform and finally showed why he was the top ranked QB. Brandon Cox was sacked like 8 times, and Tra Battle had like 3 INTS, one for a touchdown.

Seeing the Auburn fans faces at the end of the game was priceless: it was a look of total shock. I really didn’t think we had a chance to win that game and was preparing for the worst. I remember the joy I had after that game walking back to our tailgate spot in Auburn. Seeing all their faces in total shock was amazing, it was definitely my favorite game.

UGA 13 S. Carolina 7 in Columbia 2002. Pollack fights through three blocks, blocks the pass & intercepts in the endzone for the Dawgs’ only touchdown that day. The GREATEST play I have ever personally witnessed!

The 1965 game was so grand that nothing since has overtaken it in my mind. I was in the student section with my wife(Grad School after the service) and the celebration continued all night. The Victory Bell was placed in the back of a pickup and clanged throughout Athens until dawn. Those of you not fortunate enough to see a replay would be sick if you heard all the wonderful “firsts”, but I’ll try to mention a couple. Alabama was the reigning NC and Bear Bryant had another team to ram down our throats. Top team in America, the Tide came to UGA to continue their roll which had already started for the year. The Bulldogs were no match, but gritted their collective teeth and grudgingly gave ground. They made Ala pay for every inch—just like the heralded defense years of the Junkyard Dogs. This new head coach was from Aub and we didn’t know what could happen, but his defensive coach dubbed “Mr. Clean”(Due to his likeness to a TV commercial character who wore a gleaming white t-shirt over a muscular torso and sported a bald pate above) was showing Bama that the name “Bulldog” fit every defensive player down to their well dug in toes. You could hear the hits in the stands and knew many players needed a little more then a few breaths to stop seeing stars. Bryant was excited and paced the sidelines, unlike those games when he knew he had everything in hand and only waited for the final score. The last of the fourth quarter found Georgia pinned close to their own 20-yard line and time running out with the score 14-7 Bama. It was extremely hard to watch the impending defeat and the stands were emptying. My wife and I moved across the stands toward the west end of the field applauding the wonderful struggle we had just witnessed. We walked nearly parallel to the line of scrimmage for the last play. Bama gave a 15-yard space in the defensive backfield to contain and end the game if we tryed a “Hail Mary”. Georgia took the snap and the clock ticked off the final seconds as the QB tryed to look for an open man, but the receivers long had a couple of Bama shadows on them so the ball was thrown to the proximity of the 30-yd line to a lone waiting receiver who took two steps upfield before two Bama tacklers closed and smashed into him. Just before his knee hit the ground, he flipped the ball to the trailing tailback inches from the sideline(“fleaflicker”) and with a full head of steam and blockers downfield ran the ball into the endzone with no time on the clock. We went bananas and fans began running back to the stands. We were about to tie the NC with the point after! What a game! But no!! We were lining up to run the ball in. This was the first year of a new rule which stipulated that a team had a choice to tie (as was the old rule) or go for two and win the game. There was no long discussion and since this was no “kiss-your-sister” conference and with Bama confused and argueing that the receiver’s knee had hit the ground, it was THE time and place for Georgia’s first use of the new rule. High excitement turned to pandemonium as the Dog’s struggled into the end zone and the ref’s hands shot upward! I remember my hair standing on end. 15-14, Dog’s win! After a long night celebrating and reading the Sunday Athens Banner Herald and the AJC all Sunday we relived the game over and over on the “Today” show Monday with Jack Lescoulie on the sports segment of the show and who had been taking potshots at The Tide for their mean and nasty playing including their practices and the atrocity against Tech’s “Chick” Granning in an earlier SEC game. The Dawg’s did the payback and the nation cheered. That was the greatest game of fortitude that stands today in Georgia’s storied history in my ageing 67 year old mind.Let us hope that we can make it happen again soon!

The good Lord chose to let them stay on the earth a while longer, but my oldest has to roll instead of walk. I wish Buck could’ve still been blogging with us, he was truly a veteran on these pages and extremely clever and funny. You guys take care and go easy on the Tech folks, they’re good people.

oledawg, Your story reminds Me of a Buddy of mine Who went to Knoxville in 1973 to see UGA battle it out with UT. The Dogs had lost to Vandy and UK back to back and were being murdered by the Vols when They decided to leave early and beat the traffic. They stopped in a little bar just outside of town to wash out the bad taste that the game left in Their mouths, walking in just in time to hear the TV announcers signing off, talking about “one of the greatest comebacks in history”. The Dogs had won 35 to 31. I don’t think He has left a UGA game early since then. Cuz, Zeb, thanks for the props. I have some great memories of UGA games with My Dad, going back to a young punk named Dooley taking over the program.

Ode to Eli

It doesn’t take much to make me happy. When you stay hungry, everything tastes good. But I do need a quarterback.

When I first saw Eli Manning I was suprised. Peyton has a brother in the NFL? I gave up on him many times. (Flashes of brilliance, too many interceptions). But he never gave up on me and I said yes under an unretracted roof in Phoenix last Superbowl sunday.

Outlined against a blue grey curtain of certain and sudden death, Eli slipped the surly grasp of the blitz. He wheeled and flung and did a hundred things I’ve only dreamed of. His oval soared long and delirious over tangled arms and teeth clenched in hate. Once more into the breech he joined the tumbling mirth and offered a wounded desperation that a wide-out held on to like it was the Lombardi Trophy.

The next thing you know, Burress fakes the post, and son I got High Fives way down low, low, low…..

No, it doesn’t take much to make me happy. Not much at all.
