The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, it’s official.
UGA has won its fourth consecutive NCAA womens gymnastics championship.
My brother Jon was at the meet and reports: “Georgia smoked everybody. It wasn’t even close.”
Congratulations to Suzanne Yoculan and her terrific group of athletes for a magnificent achievement.
Oh, and the Gators came in fourth!
How sweet it is.

Bill, my congrats to the gym team. Now, I know I might get blasted by some, but there are some of us who just don’t follow the “other” sports. Not to say we’re not still fans, but for myself, there’s nothing but football for me. I know, I need 30 lashes for saying that, but it’s the truth. Some of us live and breathe college football. Do us a favor, if you’re going to post something about UGA sports during the off-season, all you have to do is add a little insight or blurb about the football team. I know I hardly speak for anyone, but I can’t get enough of DAWG Football!!!!!

These ladies compete for the love of the game, so to speak, and can incur injuries just as serious as any football or basketball player. They leave their hearts out on the mat, and must be congratulated at every turn.
They are THE dynasty of NCAA Sports this decade.

Travis, did you not read in my post that I apologized for not actively following EVERY dawg sport? And what does “get over myself mean”??? Are you the gym dogs trainer? Do you help paint their nails and do their hair??? Don’t come at me boy unless you’ve got something better than “not supporting all teams”. First of all azzhole, I DO support all teams, I only choose to comment on football. Now, go away before I taunt you a second time!!!!

Zeb… you are just another backwards redneck that jumps on the football bandwagon. Judging by your use of language, you are an uneducated redneck at that… do us UGA alum (and UGA non-alum fans)a favor and pick a new team… you actually sound like an Auburn type.

Hmmmm, backwards redneck there alum?? Which part of the Kings English did I slander? Was it my use of the word “azzhole” or the word “the” that sent you into your little tirade??? How long have you been on here sir?? And “jumps on the football bandwagon”???? I don’t know how old you are but you need to check yourself and your blogs my good man. Now I’m not going to go off on you just yet because I think you might be new here. If not, then you need to explain yourself. I doubt, sir, that you are a UGA fan, even if you actually have that piece of paper from there. Never, never, fvking ever question my loyalty to UGA again. And for the record you pompous little arrogant twit, don’t respond to me again unless you have something useful to say. I fart in your general direction. Got it??? You have a wonderful evening.

After much thought “Mr Alum”, I have to tell you that you got me. I must be one of the dumbest people on here. But I’m a Georgia fan. Sooooo….does that mean we’re all dumb rednecks because we ONLY follow the football progam at Georgia?? You clearly have a superior intellect and I will acquiesce in your almighty prescence…..cause I’m just a dumb redneck.
Mr Alum, it’s idiots like you that should not even own a computer. I hate calling people names, but I’m going to take exception in your case. You should not ever type or talk again. You know not what you speak of. But the constitution gives you the right to apply whatever dumbazz comments you have to say.
See, there you go and make me say things. My boy Shane is going to chastise me for this. Sorry Shane, it was just one of those times.

Wow! what a moron! The school has an atheletic PROGRAM like every other school in the nation has. Why are you so low as to bring down these girls after such a task as to post 4 straight national titles. It is an AMAZING accomplishment just to win 1 national title, let alone 9 titles, or 4 in a row! What about the young freshmen on the team? What type of thrill do you think this is for them? This is quite possibly a once in a lifetime event! You are a pointless, biased redneck which the world would be just better without! I give you your much overdue congradulations DAWGS!!! You are number 1!

The truth is, coach is a great recruiter, motivator and has build this program up to be the best, one of the best ever in college sports.
Congratulations to all the coaching staff, and the young women to compete and represent UGA with pride and honor each time they take the “stage” at competitions in Gymnastics.
BTW…with the budget discrepencies…UGA gymnastics should get more money. The 250K per year is a shame, compared to the millions that basketball gets…look at the success of each program lately and tell me if that’s justified?
Again, Congratulations UGA Gymnastics, you ladies represent the university and are shinning examples of student athletes!

I am a massive UGA football fan but it IS possible to respect and enjoy other areas of UGA other than just the football team. My daughter is 6 and already works hard in gymnastics. The amount of work that goes into it to be on a college team is beyond comprehension. It is WAY more than most sports. Did anyone read where the gymdogs smoked our football team pound for pound a few weeks ago?
So give these girls their props! They are just as amazing as any other sport and deserve the recognition for being the best in the country which is no small feat! Or is it that they are women and aren’t as respected as male teams?
If someone can’t come on this blog and give them their congrats for representing the school we ALL say we love or if you cant do anything but talk about football then stay off the blog???
Congrats UGA Ladies Gymnastics!!! You girls ROCK!!!

Hey Tech fan, what does “typical UGA fan” even mean? There are prabably roughly a quarter million really big UGA fans and I am sure another couple of hundred thousand more casual fans. So what is it that you have recognized that they seem to have in common, setting them apart from the general sport population?
I guess I could say “typical tech fan”, using a meaningless cliche’ that you can’t back up.

These girls work extremely hard and long hours just for the love of their sport and the honor of UGA. Pound for pound they are the best athletes on campus and it isn’t even close!
Congratulations ladies!!!

AltamahaDawg:
Just because most of the homeless in and around Atlanta wear clothing or hats with a Georgia logo on it doesn’t count them as fans. You are the typical UGA fan. You have such over-inflated view of your school that the rest of the nation doesn’t share. By tomorrow, you will probably say UGA has millions of fans around the world. There is no way you are close. I guess you went around to every household and questioned everyone to whether they were ‘Big’ UGA fans or ‘casual’. Get real. You proved my point perfectly. Typical UGA fans like to point out unprovable facts. You back it up with no fact.
Here is something real. The combined sales of personalized team license tags for all other schools in the state of GA are higher than the sales for UGA. That means more fans from other schools buying tags. The information comes from the recent Florida tag articles.
Something I also find funny. My three children play baseball/softball in the Sandy Springs and Alpharetta leagues. I rarely see anyone with UGA clothing. There are a few fans (the guys who line the fields-true story), but most parents are graduates from Tech, Notre Dame, Florida, Tenn, and Auburn.
The reason UGA is not a ‘National’ power in the big sports is because they aren’t. Hey, neither is Tech but I don’t go around thinking we should be handed a Nat Champ every year.

Gee Tech fan where do I start. The northern Atlanta metro area is home to families that do not represent small town Georgia. They represent a microcosim of this nation as they come from all parts of this country. Thus the different team apparell.
Go to the other Georgia, the one outside the Metro area. You will see more individuals wearing UGA clothing and following the Dawgs faithfully. Unlike me, most did not attend UGA, but they love “their” Dawgs. If you would take your head out of your posterior, climb down off your high horse and step outside the metro area, you would see it.

Well, well, well. What a shock, got hung up on a non issue to avoid answering my questions. I guess you couldn’t really figure out what my point was, which wasn’t that UGA fans outnumbered anyone, and who said anything about being a national power? I sure didn’t. I think that’s your own insecurity talking. Nice smokescreen answer.
BTW, I dont think it’s any big secret that well over 100k people physically attend UGA sporting event, and just like ANY schools, that would only be percentage of thier actual fan base. Then if you consider the population of the state of Georgia, a reasonable portion is going to be a fan of the state university. My number are easily conservative. And Cuz is correct, the entire universe is not contained in metro Atlanta. Another “typical tech fan” outlook?
Also don’t you think its pretty silly basis for comparison to look at recently unveiled “other school” tag sales vs. Uga plates that have been old hat now for decades? I bet one out of 30 UGA fans I know still orderes a UGA tag, But I’d be willing to bet, that a large percentage of (fill in) fans would get thiers. It’s understandable that would be considered a way to identify. UGA fans In-State dont really need that. I also know several folks sporting “other school” plates who are, in fact, a UGA fan as well. Not to mention how appearal is much more of a fashion statement if its NOT the hum drum, local team. Brilliant “proof” you got there. Are you really saying that you do NOT believe UGA is the predominant fan base in the State of Georgia? really? seriously?

Hey SEC fans,
Just wondered if you happened to see the trend in the draft. I guess the NFL is going soft with all the ACC picks in the draft. Funny how 2 of the first 3 picks in the draft were ACC players and 7 of the picks in the entire first round were ACC players. SEC only had 6 in case you were wondering. Oh, in the 6 rounds already drafted, 30 have been ACC while 24 from the SEC. I see someone finally took pity and selected a UGA player in the 5th round (LMAO). What a great catch there. Seems the NFL just wants a lot of these players from the so-called worst conference in the NCAA. What are they thinking? The NFL isn’t that popular is it? Why aren’t they just making NFL teams out of SEC teams? Wait, what am I saying? It’s the SEC fans that are always saying they are the top conference. Looks like some others have some talent also. I love when there is sure proof to shut these lame SEC fans up. Have fun boys!! Hope you didn’t mind getting verbally spanked by this ACC girl. I know how you southern boys like to control your women and all so I imagine you will say something to make yourself feel tough….

ACCgal,
No doubt the ACC is turning out some good players as evidenced by the draft results so far. I know that the SEC was young last year, particularly GA and FL, so there aren’t many top caliber seniors coming out. Nevertheless, good for the ACC

TechFan, you need to come to South Georgia to see what school apparel is being worn in this part of the state. No doubt that you may see less UGA apparel being worn in and around Alanta since it is the home of GT. As one gets away from the Atlanta area it’s as if all things are DAWGS. No facts just my on true observations.

Whenever the ACC has more players drafted than the SEC people just laugh and say, “All that talent in the ACC and nothing to show for it.” Of course, the ACC should have decent draft results - their athletes don’t get crippled playing against an SEC defence week in and week out. The ACC doesn’t get blown out in a lot of major bowl games because they aren’t in a lot of major bowl games. I think Matt Ryan will be a great pro QB but I don’t think he was recruited to be an ACC player.

Incidentaly, it would pretty easy to find 1 million UGA fans right here, much less “around the world”. That’s roughly only 10% of the fine folks in the State of Georgia. There are almost 250,000 living UGA alumni right now, 80,000 right in the Atlanta area. Do you think its likely they are UGA fans? How about thier family and friends? Factual enough for you, or do we need to count tee-shirts at a softball game?

Congratulations!!! Stick with Tennis and Gymnastics, it is the only sports you can win a national title in.
You might consider scrubbing your football program and convert Sanford into a Gymnastics area or tennis courts.
115 years of football in Athens, and only 1 national football title. So sad, so very sad. Well maybe one day you can run with the Big Dogs, then again maybe not.
Best of luck losing to AU, UT, UF and USC next year, 8-4 at best for 2008.
By the way, CMR needs another raise, even though he has not even delivered your team to a national title game.

ACCgal: I’ll grant you that more ACC players were drafted this year. Congratulations. You need to remember one thing though… those drafted players are INDIVIDUALS, not TEAMS. The last time I checked, conferences were judged by how their respective TEAMS performed. Individuals do not define a team, but generally if they do, then that TEAM is probably not very spectacular.

dogpiler, if you don’t want to read UGA poster, see if you can figure out the easy solution. And if you werent so quick to just insult somebody using dried up old comments that you copied, you would know that I have said repeatedly UGA should not have been in the MNC game, but the system was flawed IF that was even in question, and it was. If buck had half a point to make, we might have got to that.
BTW, try last 6 games.
To me, the mark of a homer is somebody so convince that anyone who doesn’t pull for thier team must be stupid, and spends any amount of time in other team’s blog to tell them so. Know anyone pathetic like that?
