Springtime in Athens

Nothing says spring is really here to me like getting back inside Sanford Stadium for the annual G-Day game.

There’s a good turnout every year for the scrimmage between the Red and Black teams, though last year’s winter-like chill probably held down attendance a bit. There aren’t as many question marks about the team this year as last spring, but because of all the anticipation about the Dawgs’ prospects this coming season, the Athletic Association is expecting a larger than usual crowd for the 2 p.m. game on April 5. So they’re encouraging fans to buy tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the gates on game day.

Through midnight Sunday, March 30, you can purchase tickets online through georgiadogs.com, and they say all tickets will be mailed on Monday. Or if you’re in the Athens area, you can buy them in person at the ticket office in the Butts-Mehre Building between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

Usually, they keep the G-Day crowd confined to the North stands but, who knows, maybe this year they’ll have to open up the South stands as well.

And a little extra incentive for a spring Saturday trip to Athens: The baseball Bulldogs will play the second of a three-game stand against South Carolina at 4 p.m. that day, so fans can head straight from G-Day over to Foley Field. You can also buy “print at home” tickets in advance for Georgia baseball games at georgiadogs.com.

A reminder on one other spring ritual: Monday, March 31, is the deadline for Bulldog Club members to order their six-game football season tickets. They’re $240 each.

Another fixture of spring at UGA is Suzanne Yoculan’s national champion Gym Dogs, who’ll be competing in the SEC Championships at Gwinnett Arena in Duluth this Saturday. And, taking a page from Mark Richt’s book, the Gym Dogs are asking UGA fans to “Black Out” the arena. Special black “On Target” T-shirts for the event are available at georgiadogs.com. Earlier this season, the Gym Dogs had a successful “Pink Out” at Stegeman Coliseum in support of breast cancer awareness. Looking ahead, the Gym Dogs will be going for a fourth consecutive national title at the NCAA Championships, this year being held in Athens April 24-26. Less than 800 tickets remain and they can be purchased at the oft-mentioned georgiadogs.com or by calling the UGA Ticket Office at 877-542-1231.

So let’s get out and support our teams!

G-Day is always a highlight of the spring.

The wait after that for the season seems to last forever!

Hope Caleb King’s knee is in good enough shape that we get a good look at him. I’m also very interested in seeing the backs vying for the third tailback spot. You never know, that guy could end up playing a crucial role for us.

I know Coach Richt says the o. line is coming along more slowly this year, so that bears watching.

I’m looking forward to seeing Logan Gray, too.

Go Dawgs!

John, If I remember correctly the final score of the West Virginia game was 38-35, hardly a blowout. UGA outscored them 28-10 in the final half. If it wasn’t for a fake punt Georgia would have won.

What’s everyone’s opinion of ESPN’s College Gameday after last year? It seems to me these guys have not only annoited themselves The Official Last Word in College Football, but that the show has a huge Big 10 lean.

Maybe it’s just me still annoyed that Kirk Herbstreit went from “people are partying in Athens, GA” to “it should be LSU and OSU” in less than one hour.

Austin, Corso coached at Indiana, Herstreet played for Ohio St, and they have Desmond Howard from Michigan and corresponent. Theyre stuck in time like the rose bowl committee. The show was made to hype espn games.

I hope G-Day game doesn’t ever sellout because if it does the greedy so and so’s will want to charge $50.00 instead of $5.00 for the tickets. This should be something to see, they should be better then last year and that should put gray hair in the heads of other schools coaches. GO DAWGS

I am more interested in seeing what Logan Gray is capable of than Caleb King. I am familar with Caleb from his Parkview days. Logan is an exciting unknown. I am not saying dump Stafford. I just want to see what the future looks like and from what I hear, the future looks good.

See ya on the coast Alt sometime after Masters. Four weeks of 70 hour weeks are making me ready to pull a Kenny Chesney.

Speaking of Logan, does anyone think we’ll see him play any this year ? Special situations/QB options that take adv of his speed.

Based on exp, we know Cox will be the number 2 man, but he doesn’t bring anything unique to the field that Stafford doesn’t have. Who will get the majority of reps this year when we’re up by 3 TD’s in the 4th quarter? CMR will have to play him sooner than later. If he doesn’t get rets starting this year, it will be very difficult for him to step in his Junior year and be expected to perform as one.

Georgia was not motivated before the West Virginia game. WV was a fair team with a couple of hot Freshman. We came back from a huge deficit and almost beat them. We played with huge splits on the DL to contain there perimeter game and they exploited it. This was our DCs fault who has atoned for that since. Had we not had our heads in the sand we would have killed them and they know it. If you want to knock someones post season record look at the Vols.

Hey, what’s the latest on Demiko Goodman? I know he was gonna compete in track this year, but I swear he is the most athletic receiver we have, not to mention the fastest. Anybody know? Thanks

By BamaManDan

March 31, 2008 9:43 AM | Link to this

Old Rooster - You should always wish for maximum support for your beloved Dawgs. Do you not think for one second that the players and coaches at Alabama appreciated the 92,000 more than anyone? ps - the A-day game in Tuscaloosa is free. Even after the 92,000 last year, no increase. The $ is not made on admission. Merchandise and concessions, etc make the Univ $. The players deserve the best possible turnout. Support them. Roll Tide. Good Luck to you guys this year. You’re looking very solid.

Hunter 6:

This may be info you already know, but here is my take on Demiko and his career so far in Athens:

when he came to Athens, he was fast and athletic but VERY VERY raw… more than most.

He was the typical sprinter who did well in HS as a receiver because he was just superior to the D-backs trying to cover him.

When he came to Athens he had much too long a stride, his hands were sub par, and he ran poor routes (but had potential)

He obviously didn’t earn any PT his first few years and he worked hard and started impressing the coaches last Spring (07) and earned some time in the 08 season.

This Spring, he is doing just fine. However, Kenneth Harris has had a surprising Spring and currently is in the top 3 (starters) along with Mo Mass and the steady Durham.

Goodman is battling for a spot in the 2nd set of 3 wideouts, but with the emergence of RF Hill and the steadily improving Wilson (as well as the anticipation of AJ in fall camp) he will have to battle to keep his spot in the top 6 rotation.

I personally like the idea of inserting him late in the 2nd or middle of 3rd quarter to run a couple of deep patterns against a d-back that has already had to play 25-30 snaps while D. Goodman is completely fresh.

Hunterj6, my pleasure (that is just my opinion based on what I see, read, and hear, but I’m glad you liked it)

Altamaha, excellent question!

What is everyone’s view on the O-line getting whipped so badly in the scrimmage. Granted 100 plays is like 5+ quarters of action, but 12 sacks?

I’m guessing the sacks were not live action, but just the defensive player getting a hand on or wrapping up the QB?? so not all of those would have been actual sacks.

Since the D end is a bit of a question mark as we have a lot of talented players but not necessarily big sack numbers coming back… on the one hand you have to feel good about that kind of production.

I can’t imagine the O-line taking a step back this year. Granted, we lost two Seniors, but one would think that the other three starters would improve quite a bit from their Freshmen or Redshirt Frosh seasons as Sophs.

I love hearing the praise for Justin Anderson. If he can replace what the Big Cheese gave us, we should be OK on the OL.

Anyone have any good info here?

By AltamahaDawg

April 1, 2008 9:37 PM | Link to this

I’ve never believed that a controlled scrimmage against your teammates, knowing they are NOT going to lower the boom on the QB in the end is that real. If anything its good to have problems now, to be able to see and correct whatever technical issues might exist. I’d find it hard to believe that anything goes perfectly in the spring, and no way can the O and the D be at a dead even draw.

Ya know, all the money goes to charrity, but UGA’s football ticket guys are VERY GREEDY! Why do you think not all students can get tix to every home game? I think UGA should allow all students to get tix in the same section and mostly in the lower deck! The seats for the students could be first come, first serve so the stadium would be full at kick-off, and the students could check out Penn State’s student section and put a UGA twist on some of PSU’s cheers and rituals.
