A team that won’t be forgotten

Well, we’ll always have Atlanta.

The basketball Bulldogs’ remarkable post-season run of bucking the odds may have come to an end Thursday, but that doesn’t make their achievement in winning the SEC tournament and making it to the first round of the Big Dance any less remarkable.

And although the team will miss Sundiata Gaines and Dave Bliss considerably, there’s promising talent on the way and the nucleus of a pretty good team, if only Dennis Felton can coach a little more consistency into them. In the end, the season-long tendency to get up by a double-digit lead and then go cold caught up with the Dawgs. In the SEC tournament, they were somehow able to shake it off and get back in the games. This time, they appeared to have run out of gas.

Let’s just hope that next year we finally get a chance to see what a season under Felton is like WITHOUT a ton of personnel losses and off-court drama.

In the meantime, this bunch of Bulldogs can hold their heads high. They’ve written a chapter in UGA athletic lore that will be long talked about.

What do you think are Sundiata’s NBA chances?

Georgia simply didn’t have the offensive weapons to overcome a referee who would not let our kids play defense combined with Xavier hitting almost every free throw down the stretch. That was a fatal combination for these scrappy, but not particularly gifted Dogs. This is not an excuse, just reality. The truth is that if you can’t adjust, adapt and overcome the obstacles in your way and play the way the refs dictate, then you aren’t good enough to advance anyway.

It was a good run while it lasted. This team is an inspiration and they represented the University well. What more could you ask?

Congrats Dawgs on making it this far, you obviously should have won this game if the officiating crew wasn’t so biased. How can the NCAA screw up so badly and not get at least a non midwest officiating crew? We would’ve won this game by 20 if we weren’t getting called for bad calls and had a few called our own way. Yata was getting raped by Burrell and yet no calls. I hate to say it but this crew was biased and yes it was a Big 10 crew.

I don’t think he’s NBA material. May be with alot of coaching but not as the player he is now. Yata needs better ball handling skills and a quicker first step in order to run a NBA team.

Congratulations to Georgia State A&M (UGA’s original name) for making it to the big dance. They fought hard but faced with real teams instead of SEC basketball, they got spanked. Face it, SEC basketball is nothing close to the rest of the nation, but it was fun to see them scrap it out. UGA was faced with hard odds this entire season. Good job hanging tough.

I guess “The Truth” is obviously an ACC guy who wishes his conference was a football powerhouse.

As someone who usually puts all of my passion into football, I would like to thank Coach Felton and the BBall Dawgs for making us so proud. The whole Dawg nation was behind you today and appreciates the job you did no matter the outcome of the game. After the Harrick’s, it has been tough to be a Dawgs Hoops fan but I think this year’s team has brought us all back.

Best wishes S. Gaines in whatever you pursue. We will be pulling for you.

Nice to see UGA representing the black schools like they are. Doing good in football and now in basketball. Good for you guys. It is about time black public schools in the South had some representation. Funny how Grambling and UGA have the same logo on football helmets. Keep up the good work! We are routing for you guys, (as long as you don’t try to mess with the Univ of Texas).

March 20, 2008 and The Bulldogs Men’s Basketball Season is finally over. 17-17. Who would have thunk it. Xavier is a fine team this season again, and we gave them all they could handle for a half, up 9. Xavier is a deep team and the Bulldogs with 59 seconds to go were at the foul line hoping to get 2 free throws to make it a one possession game. With only 9 Scholarship players, that was a walk-on. He missed the front end of the 1 and 1, and the game was over. The huge disparity in free throws awarded Xavier to those afforded UGA was the only difference in the game.

Xavier had 33 free throws and Georgia had 5, and we lost by 12 at 61-73 as a direct result of Xavier getting 28 more free throws to beat us by 12. Not that we were going to win the game, or that Xavier wasn’t simply deeper and better.

I didn’t exactly understand why Price only got 23 minutes of the 40. He had a fine game and will be the main star of the team next season when we Win our 12th game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum or should I say at Dennis Felton Court at Georgia Bulldogs’ Atlanta Coliseum ?

Duke is overrated. They are beating Belmont by a single basket, 67-64 with 2 minutes to go. Kentucky Lost today. Maryland is Losing Big in the NIT, and Florida State already Lost Big to Akron Zits in the NIT.

There is a Poll on Athens Banner-Herald today of where The Bulldogs will be ranked Preseason, and 90 percent of the voters think UGA will be ranked in the Top 3 in the nation. G-Day Game is coming up.

I love these Georgia Tech fans bragging how great the stinking ACC is in men’s Basketball with Georgia Tech 15-17 and Georgia 17-17 still playing March 20th, because Georgia Tech LOST to UGA 72-79 to give Paul Hewitt now a 3-5 record, 2 games under .500 against The Bulldogs.

The ACC does NOT have more NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships than The SEC.

The ACC did NOT have more teams selected for the MARCH MADNESS than The SEC with the ACC only having 4 teams and The SEC with 6.

Both the ACC and The SEC have 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball NC.

Why isn’t Georgia Tech playing in the NIT ?

Because Georgia Tech LOST BIG to UGA 72-79, or Tech’s record would have been 16-16 and they would have been in the NIT.

Then, UGA’s record would have been, not 17-17 today, but 16-18.

Truth, hey, tell me again how Paul Hewitt’s record against UGA in Men’s Basketball at 3-5 is ONLY because he lost his 1st game in Athens ?

Michael F. Adam$ attended the NCAA Tournament in Washington D.C. today. Maybe he can get a job offer up there ?

Hey Tech fans, both of you, I looked up the College Baseball Ratings page today and find Georgia Tech is No. 43 RPI and Georgia is No. 29 in that sport too.

Is this where I remind Tech that they have NEVER been ranked No. 1 in the Final AP Poll in Football, like UGA has ?

I am still p** about this game. The referees really F* us good. I was only able to watch the 2nd half while at work, but that officiating crew was about as pathetic as it gets. How can one team get the chance to shoot free throws like Xavier did, while I think we shot 2. Give me a break! Speaking of breaks, Xavier was given all of them. Sundiata was driving down the middle, getting clobbered, and no calls. On the other end, every call went against us. I was wondering what crew officiated this game, and another person on here said it was Big 10. We should have won this game by double digits EASY, but the refs gift wrapped it for Xavier. Its too bad a good game has to be ruined by a biased crew of idiots!

As long as we keep Paul Hewitt with a LOSING RECORD to UGA and keep Dennis Felton with a WINNING RECORD against Tech, I don’t give a crap what happens with men’s basketball compared to Football.

SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament Champions again, hey that was all gravy.

Bulldogs’ Center Chris Davis says Georgia will have no one but ourselves to blame if we are not in the National Championship Game this up-coming season, because we are going to be ranked very high to begin the season with rumors we will start out No. 1.

Georgia has never been ranked No. 1 in the Preseason Polls.

We have been ranked No. 1 six seasons in the post-season polls, the same six times as Georgia Tech has, by all the same polls that ranked Tech No. 1 - except Georgia Tech has NEVER been ranked No. 1 in the Final AP Poll.

You know ?

The Poll which just ranked us No. 2 to end the season, just over.

We have a lot of really good games in that sport coming up too.

I never expected to make the NCAA Tournament, the NIT yes, the NCAA Tourney, no.

I never expected to beat the Number 8 team in the nation Xavier either.

But, I damn sure did expect to beat Georgia Tech.

Again.

BullDawg

Just a quick comment by someone who is not a UGA or Tech fan. I have no idea who you are or if you went to college, or even if you would tell the truth about it, but I don’t believe you did just from the fact that every point you made referenced a sport. Note the bold which seemed to be your way of expressing your thought.

If the measure of your school or conference is by wins and loses in sports, then you have no idea what a college was built for in the first place.

Sports are a marketing tool for colleges to encourage enrollment. Period. Most universities have to resort to this to boost enrollment which beleve it or not is their main source of funding.

Take a look at the top schools in the nation which have great enrollment rates based on the level of education the student will receive. Harvard, MIT, Carnegie-Melon, Stanford, even your Georgia Tech all have students who go there for education and school reputation. Schools like U of S. Calif, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia and such have to HAVE great sports programs or else students will go to smaller, less expensive schools that offer a similar or sometimes better education.

Which would you feel better with when you are entering the job market? A diploma from a school who won a conference championship? Or rather one of the top schools in the nation? Sure there is state loyalty and the feeling to pull for the home team, but education and reputation should override all of that. Or else you just wind up settling for less in your life, which just may be the case.

The Truth is a liar. UGA was never Georgia A & M. It always has been the University of Georgia. The state founded it as a liberal arts college. The second college at UGA was the school of law prior to the civil war. UGA did obtain money as a land grant college but never used it for that purpose. The college of agriculture was not added until the 1900s.

Oh, and comment, its commponly called Southern Cal. Or, SC or USC. No one calls it U. of S. California. Southern Cal also has a prestiges reputation and is a quality school. By your reasoning Stanford, Cal, Duke, and UVA have sports to market themselves too.

Finally, small schools do not give better education. By and large it is not nearly as good because you lack a true University experience and they are WAY more expensive than UGA - one of the best buys in college in the country according to US News.

Couple of comments …

1) A ‘Tech’ alum, I’m here to say CONGRATULATIONS to the Dawgs for their impressive run through the SEC tournament and an invite to the Big Dance. It could, indeed, be a springboard to putting the program back on the map.

2) To ‘Salty Dawg’, I would politely disagree to your comment that a ‘small college’ education is usually better than one from a large institution. Having 2 of 3 kids go through smaller colleges, I can see the difference in the involvement of the faculty, chances for the students to get more personal attention and focus, etc. Mind you, I’m not intending to ‘trash’ the larger schools.

As an example, our daughter went to a small school in CA. Her freshman year, one of her professors came up to her and her friends at a local eatery, noted that he remembered them from his class, and then sat down and talked world economics, global economic policy, etc. for 2 hours (no, that never happened to me .. . I’ll bet I didn’t have a professor who knew my name!). Two years later, this professor won the Nobel Prize in Economics … and STILL stopped to visit with the kids in his FRESHMAN classes… THAT’S the difference in the small colleges.

P.S. If you have a child interested in Medicine, their odds of getting accepted to Medical School are higher from a small college, in large part due to the personal recommendations they will be able to get from their professors.

Just food for thought …and, again, CONGRATULAIONS, Dawgs!

Don’t come in here and give me this crap that GEORGIA TECH is in the same league as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or MIT.

And to the writer who says that Southern California is in the same league as those colleges either, get a grip lady.

Southern Cal is way down there at Number 27, not even in the Top 25 colleges - according to the source you posters are referencing, the U.S. News and World Report.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php

Georgia Tech is not even ranked ahead of even Southern Cal, either, by the way.

Georgia Tech is Number 35.

The University of Georgia is Number 59.

Does anyone seriously believe a kid chooses Georgia Tech because they are Number 35 and Georgia is Number 59.

Georgia Tech is a rinky-dink ATHLETIC endeavor, having won but 1 National Championship ever, and it in girls’ tennis last season won on our court.

Oh, Georgia Tech has six (6) National Championships in football. Excuse me, Georgia has six (6) National Championships in football, too, and by all the same polls that ranked Georgia Tech their 6 - except UGA has 1 AP Poll National Championship and Georgia Tech has ZERO.

The facts are that Georgia Tech has limited areas of study.

As for professors, I got all that at UGA. I met with my profs after class and asked them questions.

Tech is not some aloof great top college.

And, doesn’t hold a candle to what our school does in sports.

Not in the sport of football, not in the sport of basketball men’s or women’s, not in the sport of baseball, not in the sport of even girl’s tennis.

When UGA was in Washington D.C. yesterday playing in the NCAA Tournament - we had a huge great contingency and you could HEAR we were louder and that there were more of us than every school there.

There are one-third of a million UGA alumni such as myself right here in the readership of this newspaper, and the AJ-C says there are 29,000 Georgia Institute of Technology alumni in its readership.

You Tech fans, both of you, are out of your minds if you think you are some exclusive college.

What you are is a college in a city of 5 million where you garner 51,000 to your games (mostly UGA fans) to our 93,000 (all UGA fans) with a Georgia Tech enrollment also significantly limited compared to UGA with Tech enrollment 18,747 compared to UGA at 33,831. Georgia State University has MORE than Georgia Tech.

As for the racial statements made in this blog today, indeed UGA does have a higher percentage of blacks than Georgia Tech does. Georgia Tech has 6.4 percent blacks and UGA 6.8 percent blacks. Georgia Tech has 26.4 percent Asians and UGA only 5.9 percent Asians.

Therefore, there are 77.3 percent whites at UGA to 61.1 percent whites at Georgia Tech.

This is because of the huge, MORE THAN 25 PERCENT ASIANS at Georgia Tech.

There are 28,033 Georgia Residents enrolled at UGA and only 9,864 Georgia residents enrolled at Tech. This is because of the huge Asian more than 25 percent of Tech’s enrollment.

Georgia Tech nerds are nerds because there are 28.4 percent females at Tech to 57.8 percent at UGA.

Georgia Tech students are Asian males, not from the state of Georgia, and the women of this state want not one damn thing to do with the nerds at Tech for spending the best years of their life bottled up in downtown Atlanta with a bunch of Asian male nerds.

There are THREE TIMES THE NUMBER OF Non-US citizens at Georgia Tech than there are at UGA in total, yet UGA has twice the enrollment of Georgia Tech. This is because there are MORE THAN 25 PERCENT OF GEORGIA TECH’S ENROLLMENT WHO ARE MALE ASIANS.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

As for the grades of the football players at Georgia Tech compared to the grades of the football players at UGA, Tech has a LOWER APR than does Georgia of football players.

None of which justifies any aloofness on the part of Georgia Tech to Georgia.

You get your Asian butts beat, everywhere compared to UGA.

Nerds.

Male nerds.

Male Asian Nerds.

Male Asian Nerds whose grades for your football players are WORSE than UGA’s.

The vast majority of the people who live in Atlanta go to UGA and not Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech is NOT some elite college compared to UGA.

Tech is anything but and your men’s basketball team sat at home and watched UGA win The SEC Tournament Championship and play in the NCAA, after beating your lonely butts 79-72 for the 5th time in the last 8 seasons.

Outside of Asia, no one knows who Georgia Tech is.

Those in this state who do, will not attend Georgia Tech.

You don’t even have a president of your falling college rankings, NCAA Probations in multiple sports including losing 6 Scholarships in Football 2007-2008 for Academic Cheating which you admitted to, and declining Academic Progress Report by the NCAA for your football players compared to UGA’s.

Truth be told, we don’t have a president either.

But, at least there is someone sitting there at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in Washington D.C. being pointed out as our “president.” Tech’s quit amid all the declining Academics especially among the sports at the Georgia Institute of Technology, such as your poor football APR compared to UGA’s.

There is no sport you can beat us at.

And, you attempt to brag about being Number 35 in the nation as a college with us Number 59.

There are 10 times the UGA alumni in Atlanta, for example, than there are Georgia Tech - so, everywhere you turn you see that Georgia Tech tries to DEFINE ALUMNI as ANYONE who ATTENDED the college.

Excuse me.

The alumni are the persons who graduated college from the institution.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

A person who received a degree from a school.

Your college drop-outs don’t count.

Calvin Johnson cannot speak a word of English.

Stephon Marbury, give me a bloody damn break. This non-graduate of Georgia Tech played men’s basketball for 1 year at Georgia Tech failing everything and left to become the pariah of basketball today.

Chris Bosh, 1 year.

Mark Teixeira did not graduate Tech either.

Bobby Jones never hit one single golf ball for Georgia Tech, so don’t sit there and tell me Bobby Jones is Georgia Tech’s best golfer ever.

David Duval, when he was at Tech, said that “all of his teammates were hackers.”

The average GPA of freshmen at the Georgia Institute of Technology is only 2.8 whereas at UGA it is 3.2. This explains why only 92 percent of the freshmen at Tech return their sophomore year while at UGA 94 percent do. Tech’s grades have always been ridiculous, and this explains why the Academic Progress Rates of your football players cannot keep up with their counterparts, on the field or in the classrooms, with UGA football players.

The students obviously are not as happy at Georgia Tech as they are at UGA and this is generally attributed to the fact that there are 3 times as many men at Tech as there are women; but, in fact, it clearly is because the grades at Georgia Tech - especially of your football players compared to UGA’s football players - are worse at Tech than they are at UGA.

Both are public institutions supposedly to enhance the education of the state of Georgia. With 25 percent Asian and 3 times as many Non U.S. Citizens (Asians) at Tech than at the far larger University of Georgia, the facts are that Georgia Tech is fading in its Academics compared to UGA.

All day long, I consult with business owners who are University of Georgia graduates. Friends of The University of Georgia are also significantly more prevalent than Georgia Tech friends. 10 to 1. A third of a million UGA graduates in this AJ-C Readership compared to the AJ-C says but 29,000 Tech graduates.

You can sit there and attempt to redefine alumni all you want.

The facts are that UGA has a far greater impact on the world around us, than does Tech.

Giving out bad grades, especially to your football players, compared to UGA does not make Georgia Tech in the same class as Harvard, Princeton, Yale or MIT. It just runs off your freshmen who believed your crap on your own WebPages ONLY that Tech is great – like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or MIT is. Those are the Top 4 colleges and Georgia Tech has dropped to Number 35. In the meantime, UGA has improved, thanks to the HOPE Scholarship to Number 59, but Tech doesn’t attempt to educate this state, and no women with 3 times as many men as women and 25 percent Asian with far more – 3 times as many in total numbers – than UGA in Non U.S. Citizens.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

So, we come in here every time UGA beats your butts at yet another sport, and you try to say Tech is on par with Harvard, Princeton, Yale or MIT.

You are full of Shiite.

Take a look at your sports venues. They are all a joke. Bobby Dodd Stadium at “Historic” Grant Field, the big tet with its leaky roof and its only 9,100 seats, and Rusty ole Chandler Field are NOT ENGINEERING MARVELS and instead anything but.

So, you drop back and say how great the ACC is this sport, like we are to forget how you SUCKED AT MEN’S BASKETBALL again this year compared to UGA, and believe that the ACC has more NC in men’s basketball than The SEC – which it does NOT.

Just because Georgia Tech gives out worse grades to your football players, does not mean that Georgia Tech’s professors are better at teaching your football players better. As a matter of fact, it is regarded therefore that they do a worse job at teaching your football players.

And, we are coming to Alexander Memorial Coliseum, generally referred to locally as the big tet to Win our 12th game at your gym next year in this sport your season has been over while you watched us Win The SEC Tournament Championship at your gym and then play yesterday in The Big Dance.

Oh boo hoo!! Those bad old refs cost you the game. Typical dog response. You were 4-12 in the SEC and backed into the NCAA Tourney with a bunch of luck. The dogs will always suck.

Most of the time I don’t read or respond to these blogs because you have so many unhappy people on this thing. Life is too short to be criticizing each other about something that dosen’t matter to anyone but you, because half of the people you are trying to get to don’t know and the other half don’t care. Bottom line Georgia did well to even get to the tournament and Coach Felton and the team should be commended for that. Some of you guys on here that are so unhappy need get the some female companionship if you know what I mean. Come on guys it’s not that serious, you’re going to pop a blood vessel.

When Tech made its run in the 2004 NCAA tournament, I had a number of Dawg friends and co-workers who wished us well. I can partially return the favor this year, and tell the Dawgs here that I am one lady Yellow Jacket who is very proud of this team for winning the SEC tournament under horrible circumstances and making an admirable showing in the NCAA. I’m sure your team will be back next year, and you deserve to be proud of them.

To “The truth?” - so the SEC is not a basketball conference…Florida recently won back to back NCAA tournaments…help me remember what conference they are in? Tennessee has been great all year, and they dominate womens basketball. Kentucky…not a basketball school?

My name is Bill King. I bought this goofy looking UGA shirt at Walmart. It wasn’t even on sale!

I apologize to those of you who, like myself, are huge UGA football fans and don’t really have any other connection to the university. Basketball is insignificant. We all know it. How long till football season starts?

Nothing says “Go Dawgs” and “Wait, we won a basketball game?” like thousands of us football fans dropping off the basketball bandwagon all at once.

Yours,

Bill

I tend to get beat up a lot when I spew my nonsense out in public. That’s why I do all my ranting at my computer. I got a lot to say, but not much substance.

And to the poster above who asked, no I did not go to UGA but that doesn’t make me any less of a die-hard fan.

Thanks Gwen. It’s hard to return the favor to you yellowjackets however, when what you send into our blogs every single day, are these nerds to act like UGA backed into The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and not earned it - as we all watched us Win 4 games in 3 days and the last 3 at your house against 3 NCAA Tournament teams.

To hear them tell it…it’s the ONLY school in Ga….oh, yeah…that’s right…it IS the ONLY school that just about anybody can get into…not a fan…..sorry!

So now, in your post, you are showing us an example of the very thing you were talking about?

Although I doubt you even realize it.

Lest anyone forget, we Techsters hate the dawgs for all kinds of reasons: not the least of which is that we are smarter, better, higher-paid and all while not getting the credit and respect that is deserved from those who should acknowledge their betters—kind of like you BuLLDawg types who are so obnoxious.
Don’t think GT is among the elite schools in the nation? How about the AJC teaming with CNN on their respective websites and take a poll? The gauntlet is thus thrown down to each of those locally-based media outlets. Put up or shut up!

Weeeeeeeeeee!
