Big-time pay for a big-time job
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
First, a disclaimer. The idea of ANYONE being paid more than $2 million to coach college football is crazy.
But in big-time athletics these days, it’s also reality.
So is the fact that people rank EVERYTHING in college football nowadays, including how much your coach makes. And it all counts in how seriously your program is taken.
Given all that, the idea of Mark Richt being in seventh place in the SEC in compensation, as he was before today’s vote by the UGA athletics board, is also crazy. Richt quite obviously is among the elite coaches in the country, as well as the conference, and based on what the other guys are making, the raise he’s being given up to $2.8 million a year makes good sense.
Even after the raise, he’s only the fifth-highest paid SEC coach. But the guys ahead of him have either won a national championship or gone undefeated.
All that having been said, it is indeed possible to pay a college coach too much. Notre Dame quite obviously isn’t getting their money’s worth out of their $4 million man. And the verdict’s still out on St. Nick at Bama.
But the bottom line is: Richt deserved the raise.

Satan is soooooo overpaid.
UNLESS his job description is to get as many football players arrested as possible!!
If that’s the case then he is worth every penny.

What a slippery dude.
I do though believe that CMR should punish his players that misbehave more, on the line of CTT, but hey he did learn all that he knows from -awe shucks- Bobby Bowden!!

He is worth it. He has more honor than most of the others in the SEC all put together. We are fortunate to have him. Hope we made sure we increased the buyout at the same time. I don’t think he is going anywhere, he has moved all his family to the area. At the same time with this amount of money, he could them with no problem. Good move UGA, lock him up long term. He has become UGA football. How bout Richt/Sanford Stadium? Seems a bit more appropriate, don’t you think?

He is worth that and more. Fortunately Richt is motivated by more than money. His situation at Georgia is really good for his family as well as his professional life. His balance in life and character are part of the package that make parents want to entrust their young men to him. When you meet him in person - and I have - there are two things that stand out. One is he is a nice guy who will engage you and take time to learn what you think. The other is there is an intensity that is understated in tone and never reported, but it is there big time. He is a great coach and a great man.

“The idea of ANYONE being paid more than $2 million to coach college football is crazy.” I get so sick of people saying things like this about coaches and athletes. Listen, there are people in this country making much more than $2 million a year for all kinds of things way more superficial than college football. Oh by the way, they are not publicly scrutinized daily by the media, university administrators and rabid fans. Yes, football is a game. Yes, it’s a great gig! But, Richt deserves it! Way to go, coach!

Does he deserve the increase………….sure he does. Aside from one magical season under Dooley in 1980, Richt is clearly the best coach in school history.
Heck, if Adams and company had given Richt any more than they did, the Rednecks, White Trash, Trailer Trash, Transients, Underclassmen, Financial Aide Students, Local Athens Dirt, the Players Families, and UGA’s owners couldn’t afford a ticket to Sanford. But, I LIKE IT. Maybe there will actually be some class in the stands as opposed to Summer Teeth Woofers, woof, woof, woof, woof, oh my!! If you think I’m kidding, wear a Tennessee or Tech hat to Sanford. A nice import, glass of Merlo, or shot of Scotch, these weirdo’s do not know. It’s more like 35 Schaffers with a MD 20/20 chaser on top of raw Top Round with Heinz 57. How in the hell did the Yanks miss Athens?
Anyway, good for Richt, he deserves it.

CMR is building a quality program that is going to reap alot of success for years to come. He’s a man of strong commitment and faith and is building his program with spiritual principles. He’s developing and preparing these kids for life through football, instilling vision, commitment, purpose, keeping your word,(He kept his word and a spot for Dwayne Allen, when most of us would have given it to Omar Hunter,I know I would have). This short term lost will pay long term success. I don’t think CMR would ever ask for a raise or desire to leave as long as he’s appreciated. I think he means it when he said, I Am Georgia. My guess is he will coach here for at least another 10 years and then go off to the mission field after his kids are grown. Whenever he feels his job is done, he’ll leave this program as a perennial power house. And lastly to all the snipers that keep trying to tag CMR with putting up with gangster behavior, nothing could be farther from the truth. These kids are just having some good clean fun. How bout them dawgs!

Potato Dawg, I think you are right about the kids. These kids, rather young men seem to be learning to streatch their wings. Not to date myself, but when I was UGA, the legal drinking age started at 18 and then moved to 19. I read where some of these arrests are due to the police picking someone up walking late at night and finding that they had been drinking. Forget the fact that they were smart enough not to drive. On CMR the increase was warrented, and is inline with his accomplishments to date.

I love Mark Richt as the Bulldog coach and think that he FINALLY brings the reality to a traditionally middle of the road program that mindless bulldawg fans have dreamed, or maybe better put, fantasized about. Under him a TRUE dynasty is possible.
Having aid that, he still has not managed to inspire his team to be undefeated nor has he won a National Championship. Granted, with weak teams like Ohio State and Univ. Southern Cal getting perennial “shots at the title” because of their weak schedules and weak conferences, an SEC title means more than a so called “Nat’l” title. However, he and the Dawgs, haven’t gotten there yet.
Without a doubt, the two best teams in College football last year, at the end of the season, were the Dawgs and the Tigers. Had they played for an SEC Championship, it would have decided unequivocally the Nat’l title as THE ohio state university did not play a single top 10 team. They played fewer ranked teams than did Miss State, but that is the little ten.
I missed the part where Coach Richt is complaining about his salary………

I don’t think it is enough. We know ticket prices are going to go up anyway, so why not tack on $2 per ticket each year for the coach. That would be a healthy raise for him each year and we could keep him for the next 20 years. Plus it would make all the other teams really cough to come up with that dough.

Coach Richt has character and not the type of person that would even think of trying to renegotiate his contract for a higher salary. As he’s always said, he’s “blessed” to even have this opportunity. With that said, I think he deserves the raise for getting the Bulldogs to an 11-2 season. I believe once he brings a NC to Athens, he deserves an even bigger raise. You reward your men each time they accomplish an even bigger goal. This is unlike most coaches that jump from team to team, college to NFL and back just to get a big raise and was still the same person whey they left the league (sound familiar?). Anyways, I am glad we have Coach Mark Richt in Athens…and I always felt the same even during the “down years”.

Even as a Tech fan, I can agree that Mark Richt needed a pay raise. I agree getting in excess of $2 million dollars to coach a game is in itself a ridiculous concept. But relatively speaking, Richt was underpaid, and still is underpaid in my estimation. How can he still be making less than Petrino? I read his salary is $2.85 million, and Richt’s just got bumped to $2.8. Petrino has neither won a national title, been a loyal coach to his school or proved he can win anything in the SEC. I think this is the order these coaches should be paid:
Spurrier: He has a NC, but also oversaw a dynasty at Florida and has brought SC’s level of play up, although he still has work to do. But among all these coaches earned the right to be highest paid.
Saban: He has a NC, but also another NC was won with a roster chocked full of Saban’s last recruits at LSU. His salary is still inflated at $4 million per, but there’s no denying his recruiting acumen.
Meyer: He has a NC, but I think he should get some credit for bringing a new scheme to the SEC and making it work. I think he still benefited greatly from the legacy that Spurrier left at UF, and from some of the excellent recruits of Ron Zook, but he is a winner having led Utah to an undefeated season, no small task.
Miles: Has a NC, but I think of all the coaches here who came into good situations, he benefitted the most. His NC was one of the weaker I’ve seen with 2 losses to KY & Ark. But the NC does give him the slight nod over Richt.
Richt: No coach on this list has a more consistent run going than Richt. He doesn’t have a NC but UGA has been good since he arrived and now culminates with big upcoming season. He’s won 2 SEC titles, which is as many or more than anyone on this list outside of Spurrier.
Tuberville: I am surprised that Tubs isn’t paid more either. I know he doesn’t have an official NC, but he had a perfect season on his resume. Only Fulmer and Meyer have had undefeated seasons on their resumes, with Fulmer the only other one besides Tubs to do it with an SEC team.
Fulmer: I know he has a NC, but that was so long ago and ever since all these other coaches have joined the conference, UT hasn’t done much of anything.
Petrino: He doesn’t even belong on this list. He’s making a lot of dough, but has done nothing to earn it and won’t stay long enough to see any players he recruits become seniors.

Good for the Coach. When others come calling for him in the future, he will have a chance to be one of those $4M guys. Remember, we gave Richt his first HC job; these other SEC guys were lured from HC jobs and the schools had to pay them the big bucks to come. Dawgs could probably use that indoor facility today, and Richt would just as soon have it as more personal cash. He also got his assistants more $.

Are you people insane. Deserves it? How about he just got a pay raise less then two years ago. how about winning a National Championship? How about honoring a contract for once? Why do these guys even bother with a contract when a winning season equals an 90% pay raise each year. That is ridiculous!

Mark Richt comments from David Ching’s Georgia Bulldog Blog:
“Money really doesn’t drive me, but a strong contract is good. It’s good stability for the program and it’s good stability for our coaching staff and for our players too. The stronger the contracts are, the more stability there is. That’s my goal.”
“If a guy wants to put some roots down and be in a community for the rest of his career, he can do that. It doesn’t happen that often in college. You can tell that’s what I crave because that’s what I’ve been trying to do here.”
“…he said he doesn’t expect to splurge upon receiving some extra cash: “It’s just more that we can find a good cause we can give it to.”

Coach Richt has everything he needs being that he’s a simple man. All he’s asking for is an indoor practice facility. Anything more than that will go to charity or maybe even take the entire team to South America for a missionary trip…something that he wanted to do since 2005. So keep the money coming because it will be used wisely by a wise man. Is he underpaid? No he’s not. As I said earlier, you reward your men based on the goals they’ve accomplished. That’s why Petrino IS the most overpaid coach in the SEC. He’s accomplished nothing in the SEC.

If I see one more reference to 5 coaches with national titles in the SEC, I’m going postal. How many SEC coaches have had a better season than Richt’s 13-1 mark in ‘02? Just two - Fulmer and Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville has no NC to show for it, and Fulmer lives on the hot seat despite his NC. Saban and Meyer have only equaled that mark, and neither Miles or Spurrier have had a season that good - Spurrier won one less game in ‘96, and Miles has never had better than a two-loss season.
Quit judging coaches on mythical awards that are out of their control. Richt will get a national title eventually - maybe this year, maybe next, maybe 10 years from now. And you know what? His will just as arbitrary and mythical as the others. Just win the SEC.

I love that CMR is our coach. Not only is he a great coach, but he’s also a great man. He’s done a lot with our players on and off the field. Whenever there has been drama with the players, he’s handled it appropriately. I was so shocked but excited to hear that he told our players to rush the field and draw a penalty in the GA-FL game…that was so out of his character and I loved it! I am proud that he represents our University because he is a very modest and genuine person. He deserves the raise and it speaks volumes that he wanted his assistants to get raises, too! He should get the indoor practice field. God knows there’s enough construction going on over there, they might as well help the economy by having it built. And JacketFan, academics gets a lot of money but you would not believe the number of alumni who say they won’t give to academics unless the Dawgs win (or beat UF or Adams is fired). I should know, I raised money for UGA academics as a student…I love my Dawgs!

Hey,
People take easy on Notre Dame. Coach Weis only had one bad season. It seems like we live in a Microwave Society. If every time some stumble you fire them , I guess Coach Dooley and Bryant, would have been fired. I think Coach Richt is doing a great job. Second, who among us can judge what another person makes? If someone is willing to pay you that amount, why would you complain. People, it is business, just like you and I when we go to work. I don’t see people complaining that they are making more money than others in their companies? but only complain when someone else makes more money.
Thanks
