Playoffs and prognostications

On some recent subjects of interest to the Bulldog Nation:

THE ADAMS PLAN: Did anyone ever seriously think Michael Adams’ eight-team playoff proposal was likely to get anywhere? Sure, a lot of us would love to see such a development, but it’s going to take more than one grandstanding university president trying to show up LSU on its coronation day to gain any traction for such a plan. (I thought it amusing and instructive that almost immediately after Adams, a former PR man, launched his suspiciously timed trial balloon, old nemesis Vince Dooley, who has a much better idea of what’s likely to actually happen in the NCAA, came out on the other side.) The previously offered “plus-one” idea favored by Dooley and many of the conference chiefs, with the four BCS bowls having the teams seeded 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3, seems to have the most chance of actually getting anywhere if they can figure out how to overcome the Rose Bowl’s intransigence. Here’s an idea: Let the Rose wallow in its Pac 10/Big 10 mediocrity, but drop it from the BCS. (It already has a separate TV deal anyway.) Replace the Rose in the BCS with the Peach-fil-A or Cotton or Capitol One and move ahead with the plus-one plan. Don’t you think the Pac 10 and Big 10 ultimately would fall in line? After all, if you were a Pac 10 or Big 10 team with a realistic shot at the BCS, would you rather play in the Rose for tradition’s sake or have a shot at the national championship?

PRESEASON POLLS: In the past, I wouldn’t have been too comfortable with all this talk about Georgia possibly being rated No. 1 or No. 2 going into the season. Too much pressure, too distracting for the players. But recent years have proved that starting out the season ranked No. 1 or No. 2 definitely gives you a leg up (no doggie pun intended). If you win out, even a hot undefeated team (like Auburn a few seasons ago) is unlikely to displace you. And even if you lose, you have a better chance at getting another shot at it (or even two or three shots at it like LSU this year). As long as the Dawgs continue to play with confidence and enthusiasm, I don’t think an early high ranking would be a problem. (The much bigger problem is that killer road schedule we have next year.) But despite ESPN.com and others predicting UGA will start out at No. 1, I agree with my son and some other fans I’ve discussed this with that it’s more likely the AP and coaches polls will put USC in that position (as long as Pete Carroll stays put), with UGA at No. 2. Really, it doesn’t matter whether you’re No. 1 or No. 2 at the start as long as you’re in one of those spots come December.

COACHING CHANGE: If Dave Johnson jumps to West Virginia, as seems likely, UGA’s tight-end recruits just need to ask themselves one thing: Which matters more, who my position coach is or the overall program and its prospects?

It’s surprising to me that a recruit would make such a bold statement if his postition coach moves elsewhere. I guess he must feel like he was betrayed or something. All those conversations and he never said anything. I’m sure its a rather complicated situation on both sides. Oh well, I’m sure once Richt speaks to Mr. Allen he will see that UGA is still the place for him.

I think Allen has been looking for an excuse to sign elsewhere since he looked at the current TE depth chart.

The problem with the Adams plan was that Adams did no advance work, laid no groundwork for it. He thought he could just up and announce this is what he wanted and the rest of the NCAA would fold as easily as the Georgia Board of Regents does. Rude awakening time, Mike. You may have snowed your bosses, but outside that arena you’re just another loudmouthed politician. And this comes from someone who would love to see an eight-game playoff!

We lost an O Line coach last yr and that seemed to work out pretty well. With the state of the program being what it is(outstanding)there will be a line at CMR’s door wanting to join the staff. No worries on losing a TE coach, we won’t rebuild, we will RELOAD.What a great time to be a BULLDAWG!!!

A recruit should not think changing commitment if the position coach leaves for another school…right >>Omar Hunter..Trev Albert`s top 10, 1. UGA 2. Florida 3. USC 4. Oklahoma 5. Auburn with LSU, Ohio State Kansas, Missouri, Texas..TOO HIGH for Auburn.

To all you Adams haters out there, Look, If it had been up to Dooley then Donnen would still be the head coach, Adams had to fire Donnen and make Dooley hire coach Richt, So I am sick of hearing about hw awful Adams is when Dooley held the program back for years after he stopped coaching. I applaud Adams for this new idea that everyone in the world wants to see happen, A play off would be great! and he has a good idea. Dooley is part of the problem, old school ideas and old school back room deals is what the conference chiefs are all about and Dooley fits that to a pistol. So when you Bill King keep slaming Adams you need to realize that you are not that smart and if you were then you would be getting paid millions to coach instead of looking foolish trying to write a blog when you know nothing about football.

Dawgingatorville, we hate it when you sugar coat it like that. Tell us how you really feel! The issue I have with Adams is how he went about forcing Dooley out. A man that has been around that long and with his success deserved to be treated better than he was. But you are right about the fact that we would still have Donnan as our coach.

dawgingatorville:

Adams also hired Jim Harrick and let Tony Cole into school over the protests of the admissions personnel. So, let’s don’t give Adams too much (or really any…) credit.

Adams was right about Donnan and right about Damon Evans. But he has been so wrong for so long on so many other things. I find in laughable that the man who made his bed with Jim Harrick is now chairman of the NCAA. ridiculous.

I am not an Adams fan but at least he had the guts to get it out in the open. As long as the Rose keeps their greater than though attitude, they should be kept out of the mix.

Give us your rationale as why it is better to start out #1 so you have a better chance to regain after you lose. I can only think of 1 year that that has happened. (only this year)Normally it has been a matter of the week that your loss occurs. For instance, if you were #1 at the start and you lost your 2nd game then you typically drop to #5 or 6, Then as the season plays out you can regain #1 or #2 by ATTRITION (other teams ahead of you losing) On the other hand if you were #1 and lost in the 9th or 10th game youhave never been given a chance to regain #1.(not enough games to play) You UGA homers like to spin things each year to make yourself seem like you have the best team. You’re already playing out next season as though the things that happened this season is the norm. You’re just plain silly!

Last Saturday David Greene was added to the roster at Kansas City. Wednesday, Chan Gailey was hired as offensive coordinator. David’s chance to beat out Brodie Croyle for starter?

Have you stopped to think about our backfield the next few years?

Would be a great time to become a Dawg lineman - busting holes for those guys to fly through and down the field. I”d love to see Zebrie and Omar walk on or find a way in over the next year. Seems like always one or two guys don’t follow through or have to leave for whatever reason and that should free up a spot or two for those fellas in the near future.

Go Dawgs.

30,#20,#4,#67,#75,and all UGA SENIORS, thanks for an awesome 4 seasons!! Through adversity, as well as prosperity, you have all represented the University of GA and fans in an admirable capacity. I look forward to watching your future successes unfold. Thank you and God bless you all!

If you don’t wanna be a DAWG, please just go ahead and tell CMR. Cuz there are plenty of @%$ stompin’ sons of a guns that do! If you ain’t with UGA, then you will lose to UGA in 08! Unless your school conveniently leaves UGA off of your schedule. Where is Clemson? Why don’t we play them? Fred Gibson ain’t in Athens anymore so ya’ll might actually have a tiny chance.Where is Clemson and what good comes from playing GSU? We(me) want Clemson.

Adams needs to get back to being the back-slapping, hand-shaking empty suit he was brought in from Pepperdine (surf’s up University) to be after the ever-intellectual Charles Knapp left. His only purpose was to attempt to heal the rift between the Bulldog Nation and students who were appalled that Knapp didn’t cow-tow to them and the athletic department.

He is starting to actually take himself seriously as a power-wielding executive and/or potential politico. His ventures into the athletic arena have, for the most part, been abysmal.

We need a President who will worry more about raising the academic reputation of the University so our degrees carry some weight in the real world. Coming from Pepperdine, I don’t think Adams is that man.

As for Richt, he will once again fail to motivate our boys to play every game as if it’s for all the marbles, drop ping at least one game which will cost us a title shot.

He’s a great human being and a terrific coach, but he won’t lead the Dawgs to the promised land. I hope I have to eat crow and I will be cheering my heart out for him to prove me wrong.

Integrity- why schedule Clemson on a schedule that already includes S.C., ASU,Bama,UT,UF,LSU,AUburn,Vandy, Kentucky, and GT?? I agree that GSU is a gimme game but if we handle that schedule I don’t think anyone will have room to talk trash!!
