They don’t call it Big Easy for nothing!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Fran Tarkenton got it exactly right when it came to this year’s Sugar Bowl.
“A total mismatch.”
That’s how the legendary pro great and former UGA quarterback, acting as a Fox analyst, summed up Georgia’s total domination of the much vaunted Hawaii Warriors on the postgame show early Wednesday morning.
And after USC’s demolition of favorite son Illinois in the Rose Bowl Tuesday, you’ve got to wonder if the folks in Pasadena were kicking themselves hard (as they should have been) over the fact that they passed up the chance to match the Trojans and Dawgs because of their desire to cling to a traditional but antiquated Pac 10/Big 10 lineup.
I wasn’t alone among Georgia fans a couple of weeks ago when I said amid the nonstop media buildup of Hawaii that I smelled another Boise State overhype, but that didn’t stop ESPN, Fox and, yes, even the local media from portraying the team from the islands as some juggernaut that the Dawgs would be lucky to even slow down. Heck, even with the game in the bag for Mark Richt’s team and humbled NCAA record holder Colt Brennan weeping on the sideline as his backup finished out the game, Fox still kept up the stream of heartwarming anecdotes about the suddenly sainted June Junes and his team. (Sometimes they were too busy with the stories to even describe what was happening on the field!)
Hey, why let the facts and the real story get in the way of a colorful myth? After all, we’d been told that as many as 30,000 to 50,000 fans from the Five-O state were in New Orleans for the game and that they and the team were sky-high and Georgia was hobbled and the Bulldog Nation and its players less than enthused and so on and so on, yadda yadda yadda. The facts: The Superdome was about three-quarters blacked out by the UGA faithful, and even with Knowshon Moreno at less than full speed he had two touchdowns by the time he’d handled the ball five times.
The real story was that Hawaii’s undefeated record meant nothing because they had not played an SEC-caliber defense before Tuesday. Welcome to the big leagues, bruddas.
And then Fox’s Thom Brennaman made a complete ass of himself by lambasting Richt because, with 10 minutes left in the game, our second, third and fourth-stringers were still playing hard. So we threw for the end zone on fourth-and-goal. If we’d taken the gimme 3 points of a field goal, he no doubt would have still accused us of padding the score. What did he want backup Joe Cox to do, take a knee?
If it had been the likes of Steve Spurrier coaching the Dawgs, our starters still would have been in the game and the final result would have been even more embarrassing for Hawaii than it was.
I said here before that Georgia needed to make a statement in this game. Well, they did. LOUD and clear. Let’s hope the folks who vote in the polls were listening.
BOWL BITS: That preening jerk Keenan Jones of the Warriors, who kept losing his helmet to get more screen time, should have been ejected from the game for that blatantly illegal and quite obviously deliberate helmet-to-helmet hit on punt receiver Mikey Henderson, who suffered a concussion. And Thom Brennaman wondered why the Dawgs were still hitting hard in the fourth quarter. … I’ve had problems with some of Willie Martinez’s defensive game plans in the past, but he and his players did an absolutely masterful job against the Warriors. You just know that somewhere Erk Russell was grinning ear to ear. Eight sacks, without even blitzing. Six takeaways (a BCS bowl record). Colt Brennan held to career lows. Now THAT’S Georgia defense. … That was great for Brandon Coutu to close out a stellar career with a performance that included kicking the longest field goal in BCS bowl history. … I guess you can understand Mike Bobo going conservative in his playcalling once Georgia was up 24-3, but even so if it hadn’t been for some DROPPED PASSES, including a couple in the end zone, the score would have gotten even more lopsided. (Too bad no points resulted from Ramarcus Brown’s great long kickoff return.) … Man, that third quarter seemed to last FOREVER! And what with the Fox-mandated late start, the fourth quarter didn’t even begin until after midnight. Ridiculous. … Nice touch letting the soon to depart Blake Barnes kill the clock at the end. Good luck to him at Delta State. … It was entirely fitting that a defensive player got the Sugar Bowl Most Outstanding Player trophy for the first time in many years. Congrats to Marcus Howard on playing a terrific game. … After a day of watching football with me and my family in Decatur (except my son, who was at the Superdome), my brother Tim headed home to Roswell at halftime. As he got there, a dusting of snow was falling. Or, as he put it, look at the sugar falling out of the sky!

Unlike when we played UWV, UGA came out with something to prove. The defense will be absolutely awesome next year, we only lose 2 starters. Watch out SEC and BCS.

I agree totally, i’m so tired of listening to analyst who act like they know nothing about football call games. Ga could have kicked the field goal and then been accused of running up the score that way. Hopefully Ga won’t have any slip-ups next year and will be prepared for every game, that’s the only way to get the recognition. And by the way, Goooo Michigan!!!

Hawaii should played Illinos, UGA play USC, total mismatch as predicted. The Warriors might defeat Ole Miss in the SEC, but the other eleven teams would also be a mismatch .USC is the best team in the country today with jury out on LSU.Good game dawgs, HUGE improvement in offensive line since Tenn. game.

OK Terrence Moore…what is it you call the Dogs…tremblin what? or is it the Athens puppies. Once again you have embarrased yourself by saying the the dogs had to come out and destroy Hawaii and that they couldn’t possible do that. You are such a moron…why don’t you go to Hawaii and open a hair cutting salon..it appears that they don’t have any over there.

FOX Sports spent $80 million to get the rights to cover the BCS bowl games, but apparently it purchased all it’s announcers, camera crew, and replay ability at the dollar store.
I understand FOX wanted to be a player in the college football market, it’s a lucrative one. But after watching the start of a second year of FOX BCS bowl coverage – with it’s haphazard BCS Selection show and awful 2008 Sugar Bowl – one thing is clear: These people have no idea what they’re doing.
Look, it was a dog of a game. Hawaii should have never been in New Orleans in the first place (well, OK, maybe for the New Orleans Bowl. I’m sure they would have given Florida Atlantic a good game). But the BCS didn’t do FOX any favors by choosing such a bad matchup for the Sugar. When the coaching staff of Hawaii calls a win over Nevada one of the biggest wins the program has ever had, there’s a problem. Quick, name the Nevada mascot. Yeah, I thought so.
But you have to work with the tools you’re given, and FOX couldn’t tell the difference between a hammer and a hacksaw. To wit:
At one point play-by play announcer Thom (the H is for Horrible) Brennaman called the Bulldogs the Gators. That’s akin to calling President Bush the leader of Iran, which he isn’t (at least not at this point, anyway). After lambasting the Bulldogs, who had second and third stringers in the game, for going for it on fourth and goal, Brennaman then praised the Warriors on the next series for not giving up. So the Bulldogs should stop playing, but not the Warriors? Did they have any idea why Mark Richt challenged the call at the end of the third quarter? Were they curious? Of course, the awful camera work didn’t allow the audience to see any replay of worth. We still haven’t seen Howard’s fumble recovery. According to FOX announcers, Brennan Southerland was the Bulldogs leading rusher in 2006. That’s news to the four people who rushed for more yardage than he did, including quarterback Matthew Stafford Let me get this straight, Remarcus Brown returns the ball 90 yards in a kickoff, but all the praise goes to the Hawaii player who caught him from behind? Do we have any idea what injuries Colt Brennan had?

Bill,
Great assessment of the game. Dawgs made it look easy. Fox’s coverage was awful. Replay’s were inept, incessant talking during play, and the same crowd shots over & over. I can’t believe we’ve got 3 more games to get thru with these clowns, not to mention a couple more years of BCS coverage.
Dawgs should be ranked in top 5 next year. Let’s hope it doesn’t go to our head.

Fox should have used Joe Buck for the game. The announcing team was terrible. Made many mistakes besides lambasting Coach Richt. I believe our scout team could beat the Warriors. The ntl. media is a bunch of morons. Lee Corso picked Hawaii. Did any of these idiots remember what we did to Boise State? I think most of us Dawg fans knew what was in store. We got ripped off and deserved better. The BCS is a sham and the Rose Bowl committe is even a bunch of bigger idiots. Mizzou got screwed over too by not getting the Orange Bowl bid. I guess our defense makes Heisman winners and Heisman hopefuls cry. Poor little Colt Brennan was on the sidelines sobbing. Colt could not even been 2nd string on our team. Remember he claimed they had the world’s best offense and no one could stop them. To all the Dawg haters, get used to it. We will kick butt and take names with a lot of teams just we did last night. Thanks for the blog Bill. We appreciate the opportunity to give our opinions and you do a great job. Go Dawgs and Glory Glory To Ole Georgia.

Perfect analysis Bill King. First of all I hate the Faux network to begin with, but when I saw this ‘third-string’ announcing duo, I knew I was gonna despise the broadcast…and this guy Thom (who in blazes spells Tom with an ‘h’? It must stand for ‘hore’.) Brennaman was, as you said, way off base in his complaining about Georgia’s attempting a four-yard pass on fourth down. But where was his ‘side-kick’ - a former UT defensive back who should have known better and corrected him with ‘Whataya you expect them to do T(h)om, take a knee on the four-yard-line? Hawaii’s still trying to score points…they’re stuffing the run…Georgia’s got it’s way-backups in the game…and (again as you said) a field goal would have been even more meaningless.’ And what’s more, where does he, T(h)om, come off suggesting that Georgia ruined the country’s opportunity to see the ‘over-hyped’ Hawaii offense perform on late-night TV by playing a good game? How stupid was that? Of course, given the buildup everybody was engaged in - particularly FauxNet - they probably had been lamenting about it from the first series.
Great game…great piece.
P.S. - Does this mean we won’t have to put up with the Willie Martinez naysayers for a while?

You’re right, the broadcast team was practically unbearable. If Fox gets the sec contract away from cbs, it’ll be bad news. The ad icon for the movie Jumper was over the top and just plain Wrong. Verne Lundquist & Gary Danielson would have been highly entertaining calling this game. Tried to get Munsonvision (or I guess just Howardvision) but the satellite delay was close to 10 seconds.

How sad is it that after your team has won big you are not happy, but angry??!! I could almost not bear to listen to those idiots calling the game. They seemed to take everything about the game personally. Could they have been more biased against Georgia, the coaches, and the fans? Fox is famous for that type of stuff. Look on the bright side, only 241 more days and the real deal will start all over again. CONGRATULATIONS DAWGS! YOU MADE US ALL VERY PROUD.

Not to pile on, because I’m obviously biased myself, but the Fox crew calling the game was attrocious. I almost, almost would have preferred to have had a female calling the game (okay, maybe that’s a stretch). I was stunned to hear the accusatory insinuations that Mark Richt was trying to run it up. The “human interest” stories that they kept harping on over and over and over (all about Hawaii, none about Georgia) really, really got old when the real story was the complete domination of Georgia and the unfairness to both Georgia and Hawaii that they had to be in this situation, instead of letting Hawaii play a nice team ranked in the 10-20 range, and let Georgia play a top 5 team. Georgia was in an absolute no-win situation. If they had either lost or had a close game, they diminish the reputation of Georgia and the SEC. And if they blow them out, then they’re running it up. Amazing. Not only did Hawaii’s team look like the JV - but so did the announcers - and for that matter - so did the officials. Thank God the game wasn’t close. The officiating crew was just terrible too. How long did that one challenge take? Seemed like about 5 minutes, which is an eternity.

My name is Bill King. I got this goofy looking UGA shirt at Wal-Mart. It wasn’t even on sale.
I apologize for my rant in the blog “bowl bits”. I was still a little drunk from all the PBR and gas station wine. I realize that if I’m going to call out some questionable behavior by Hawaii, then I need to do the same for MY dawgs. I’ll come out and say it: It was pretty low of us to be running up the score, still passing the ball deep in the 4th quarter, and going for a 4th down conversion late in the game… Me stating that Bobo went conservative was pretty ignorant, too (Hey, I’m a DAwG fan!). Also, some of our players are a little on the thuggish side, but I like Coach Richt’s handling of them, just letting boys be boyz. Who needs discipline when we are winning?!
Well, It’s been a great season, and just you wait for the amazing run we have next year. After all, nothing says “I cheer on dem dawgs” and “a beat up old camero gets me aroused” like a UGA fan talking about next season.
Go Dawgs!

Shame on you Coach Richt! When you were so far ahead of Hawaii, you had the gall, meanness and rudeness to challenge a ruling about a catch made by a Hawaii player. What!? You are so weak and have such a large inferiority complex that you can’t let Hawaii have one questionable play. You lost all my respect. Can anybody give me the rule clarification for why the career ending illegal hit on Mikey Henderson did NOT result in an ejection? No surprise the incompetents calling the game said little about it, but the hit was late, head to head, and had to have been premeditated with the way the convict carried on afterwards. Absolute tragedy for Mikey to go out like this, and after finally seeing the replay I’m really surprised he got up. Anybody heard anything on this?

Bill, you have no class. There was no need for some of your comments in your “blawg”. Not as many people as you must think actually thought Hawaii had a chance, so all your “bruddas”-type comments and ripping on the Warriors is uncalled for. They can’t do anything about the Fox announcers or what bowl they go to. And if you don’t think football is about hitting and playing tough, you need to stick to pleasing yourself to the gym dawgs.
Please, stop your embarassing belly-aching and be a good winner. It’s already enough for me to have to tolerate my fellow UGA fans who frequent WalMart and Denny’s, but your crap is easily as bad.

XXXX, what rep? The SEC is still 6 and 2 in bowl games with Arkansas being the only bad loss and in that case, what can you really expect when an unranked team who lost its coach plays the #6 team in the country. Also, after the 7th, we’ll be 7 and 2 with the national champion to boot.
Also, can someone post the contact information for Fox Sports to complain about this announcing debacle? Bringing obvious bias into your coverage is bad enough but to let that ineptitude detract from talking about key aspects of the game is inexcusable.

I would like to encourage anyone else who was utterly offended by Fox’s unbelievably poor announcing to let Fox Sports know. To repeatedly discuss throughout the game how remarkable it was for two black Georgia players to have parents who were married and educated was perhaps the most offensive commenting I have heard during a nationally televised sporting event. Certainly this incredulity was not expressed for any of the white players nor for anyone on the Hawaii bench. This was hands down the worst announced game I have ever watched. I hope they don’t put those clowns back on for the other BCS games.

The TV coverage was a joke. Where were the replays?? We saw extended shots of June Jones, CMR, players standing around in huddles, every member of both bands, but no replays of any kind. The only time a replay was shown was when a call was challenged, and then it was one or two mediocre shots that did little to clear up the challenge. It’s obvious that the announcers did little research on the teams aside from personal anecdotes. It’s disappointing that Fox basically mailed in the coverage of the Sugar Bowl—third string announcers and lousy camera work. Both teams and their fans deserved better.

Does anyone know where & how we could possibly send a petition to the Fox network to have Thom Brenneman removed from all future BCS broadcasts?
There were so many moments where I wanted to jump through my High Def TV and strangle him, but the singular worst moment was calling us ‘Gators’. It was the ultimate stick in the eye insult. It only further proved the national media bias in favor of Florida & LSU vis a vis the rest of the SEC.
But on a happier note, congrats Coach Richt and the Dawgs on another great season. Last night was a thing of beauty to watch (albeit not to listen to) and I am so proud to be a Bulldog.

What a classless bunch of folks! Starting with the UGA coaches and moving down to the team and the fans. It must feel great to berate someone you know isn’t as good as you. It must feel great to rub their nose in it. It must feel great as a fan to chant “over-rated” to a team that can’t control what accolades the press gives them just as UGA can’t control the nagative things they say. Hawaii had a great season in a weaker conference. Give them that (they can’t change their conference). So stop making it sound like you had some great win last night. You beat the equivalent of a Georgia AAAAA high school team. Yeah, defence was great against a much weaker team. SOOOOOO? Oh that’s right…they showed how strong they will be next year! HA HA
I hated to see the cheap shot to Mikey Henderson. But I don’t see any mention of the cheap shots by UGA. There were a few. I thought Brian Mims showed an unusual amout of dawgclass. And make no mistake, Dawgclass is very different from real class.

I am glad you have gotten your life in order but don’t ever let any television channel make it seem like you were the victim. You were at fault. That was the most awful announcing I have heard since “What’s Britney doing with her life?”

Bulldog Team, Coaches, Staff and Fans, Way to go! Although I am a huge UT fan who lives in Metro Atlanta, I was extremely proud of the Bulldogs last night. I am at home visiting for the holidays (Knoxville), and was thrilled with our game, but when it came time for the Dawgs to play, I was pumped up for their win. My goodness, they were awsome. My husband was teasing me that I seemed to be a bit of a UGA fan. I guess I am a bit, but I still love my vols and always will. Because of how well they played last night, you can count on me to follow them and cheer them on when it doesn’t involve my VOLS. Good job, congrats and count this ole Tennessee gal as a fan.

Why did Fox hardly ever show replays? Or stats? Why did they break for commercials every two minutes? Lincoln-Financial coverage is FAR SUPERIOR, and considering Fox’s resources (they cover the NFL, after all), their telecast is even more of a joke. I hope their ratings were pitiful and they lose a lot of money. You’ll never hear me complain again about CBS or ESPN announcers/coverage.

Regarding the hit on the punt to Mikey Henderson - it was the first punt of the game, which I think was after a 3 and out by Hawaii’s offense on their opening possesion. The kid from Hawaii wasn’t even called for the helmet-to-helmet hit (personal foul). He was only called for fair catch interference. You could make a strong argument that it was interference, a personal foul for the helmet-to-helmet, and unsportsmanlike for the nice little “I’m a thug” dance he did all the way off the field and all the way down the sidelines after the play (with his helmet off, no less). That would have a been a total of 45 yards worth of penalties on a single play. Thank God Mikey wasn’t hurt worse. And can you imagine if he was, say, knocked out? Would the ref have stood there with an unconcious player lying on the field and say, “uh, interference?” The level of incompetence on the officiating crew last night was amazing. Remember the challenge that took 5 minutes? When that play was finally reversed, the officials had to be reminded (by Richt) that the challenged play was a 4th down, and that Georgia now had the ball. Then, there was Massiquoi clearly falling down near the two yard line and rolling into the end zone. Touchdown! Horrible. I still have no idea who/when someone from Georgia recovered the ball in Hawaii’s end zone. I’ll take the points, but I still haven’t seen a reply from Fox that showed someone from Georgia with the football.

Fox Sports managed their production of The Sugar Bowl game like the red headed step child of bowls which it was this year. UGA was in a no-win situation being matched against Hawaii. The producers and especially the announcers could not have been worse. No credit was given for Coach Richt’s sparing June Jones and team the thrashing that could have been delivered. Instead, the idiot announcers acutually critized UGA for playing hard. What a shame that UGAs season had to end on such a note.

NRC, thanks for the link. I just posted the following and would encourage others to do the same. If we’re to make a title run next year, it may unfortunately depend to some degree on the coverage given us by the national media. As such, everyone should let the powers that be know that biased and unjustly critical announcing should not be tolerated.
I’m writing to express and frustration and disappointment with the coverage of the Sugar Bowl last night and especially with the work contributed by announcer Thom Brenneman. Notwithstanding all the technical errors (calling UGA Gators?), he made many personal and negative comments about the Georgia program and its fans. Lambasting Coach Mark Richt for continuing to play with backups in the game against Hawaii’s starters? Wouldn’t it have been more demeaning to the Warriors to have just kicked a meaningless field goal or to take a knee with that much time left? Also, implying that it was ridiculous to challenge a bad call on the field in the fourth quarter was way out of line. The fact that the challenge ended up validated by the officials was never mentioned. Due to the character limit imposed here, I’ll close by stating that allowing bias in your coverage is bad enough but to let that ineptitude detract from talking about key aspects of the game is inexcusable.

Loved your blog and you were so right on…that game reminded me so much of most of the recent Super Bowls…long in hype and short in performance. You were right about that helmet-to-helmet hit…that hoodlum should have been ejected. I think that was the turning point of the game…it fired up a UGA team even more that didn’t need it. Hawaii’s team seemed undisciplined and that all goes back to June Jones and his staff. They knew what was coming…Tim Tebow even warned Brennan and the rest. But then again…don’t fault Hawaii for being so bad…they had a good team. Georgia just was that much better…don’t forget, UGA also shut down the Heisman trophy winner and another high powered offense in Florida! Don’t give me that about Tebow being injured…they just shut down Urban Meyer’s offense just like they did June Jones. And I’m a big Tebow fan. Also…don’t hold your breath waiting for Georgia to be ranked #1…Southern Cal will have that spot all to itself. The BCS and the sports media love the Pac-10 and the Big-10…a school from one of those conferences will almost always get rated #1 before the season if they can pull it off! And for the BCS…until the fans stop watching this crap and the coaches start standing up to it, nothing will change!! The ADs and presidents love it for the big money and the media laps it up big-time. And a lot of coaches love it too, except the ones who get screwed by it every year…they whine and scream the loudest! But when their teams get voted into the big game, they end up paying homage to it. I wonder if Richt or Carroll, etc. would blast it if they were meeting next Monday night? I doubt it.

Hey Dave, I wonder what you have been rubbing your nose in to make you sound like such a moron. It wasn’t Georgia that hyped Hawaii all over the media for weeks. And talk about running up the score…I’m sure Hawaii NEVER did that!!!!! You need to go back to college and take Math 101, or better yet remedial math, so you can read Hawaii’s scores over their opponents. As for Brian Mims…go back and look at what the Hawaii player did to him FIRST. If Hawaii is equivalent to a high school football team, they should have kept themselves and their half naked, bushy haired fans at the luau instead of in the Sugar Bowl.

As for the FOX announcers and coverage….a complete joke. I have been a huge critic of CWMartinez in the past. Mostly for playing soft late in games; however, helluva game plan last night. Keep smaller receivers in front, hit them hard and allow little yards after catch. Great Pressure with 3 or 4 rushers. Use of backers to confuse coverage was smart. Going into next year, D looks to be biggest strength. I am worried about depth at O’line also worried about continued development of QB. Stafford has to become more consistent with both touch and footwork. Still making unnecessary throws into double coverage. Look forward to next season; with that schedule we cannot have a UT type letdown early in the year. Coaches need keep us on even keel all 12 weeks. Who had the bright idea to schedule LSU a week before the cocktail party in ‘08. Somebody in the Athletic Dept needs to run gassers for that one.

The Hawaiians players had the longest hair and more tattoos than any team I have ever seen! My thoughts of Hawaii have diminished and I would be embarrassed to have my state represented in that manner on national television.

After watching all the games the past few days, someone needs to clean up the game of college football. Thugs have taken over the game with no discipline from the coaches (some are actually encouraging it). What happened to letting your actions speak for you. Way too many players on all teams talking too much CRAP. Make the play and go back to the huddle. All I see is a bunch of thugs way too proud of themselves. Saw a lot of it by UGA and HW players. The coverage for the Sugar Bowl was pathetic. The only thing worse than the brain dead announcers were the never ending Allstate, Verizon, Southwest and Chevy commercials. There is no reason besides greed to play four commercials after a touchdown and three more after the kickoff. Fox played commercials during challenges leaving the audience clueless about what happened. The Super Dome holds over 70,000 people yet Fox only shows the Redcoat Band, Ugly flag girls, and the fat Hawaii kid that played the drums. CBS could have played 3 college basketball games in the time it took Fox to play 1 football game. And the worse part is that the next 3 BCS games will probably as bad if not worse than the Sugar Bowl. I guess it could have been worse, we could have lost to Fresno State on a blue field.

Maybe this will help convince the folks that run these BCS bowl selections that the schools that have weak schedules have no place in these games. Anyone of the SEC or even the ACC could have beaten the Warriors. They need to just stick to their little pansie schedule and play someone that matches up well with them so they can end their season without crying on the sidelines. I know people are going to bring up Boise beating Oklahoma last year with a fluke play, but Oklahoma obviously didn’t get ready for that game and they still should have won. Anyway, pollsters really need to place MUCH more emphasis on strength of schedule and stop giving these undefeated teams that don’t play anyone so much credit. Hell, I’m 35 and I could play for Hawaii. Give me a break!

What are we all saying about a Willie Martinez defense now? I, too, was a nay sayer, opting for Will Muschamp. But I’ve never seen a defense play the way GA did in the Sugar bowl. Even the Miami defenses that everyone accused of being sired by Satan. Who were rumored to be recruited from chain gangs all over the world by the reputed sons of Satan: Scnellenburger, Erickson and Johnson. The same who many now populate the NFL Hall-of-Fame.
The sons of Hawaii have never been hit so hard. Even on the plays that were completed. On the line, in the secondary, behind the line. Poor Colt Brennan. You could see it in his eyes. As well as every Haw. player in the Sugar Bowl. It was like “Holy S_!!!, Nobody hits that hard.” I’ve changed my mind about Martinez. And, of course, under Richt, their source of power comes from a much higher place. God bless.

Why don’t you contact FOX and see if they will give you a job as the Head of the Pity Party Committee? Hawaii set precedence when they were trash talking and committing personal fouls early in the 1st quarter. However, they let their mouths write checks their butts couldn’t cash. Of course, according to the clowns in the press box, they were just happy to be there and that could be expected. I do NOT ever cheer for UGA, but I saw and heard a game that was so biased that I have to (for once) speak out on behalf of UGA. What were they supposed to do, take a knee the entire 2nd half to give UH a chance? The announcers gave every excuse possible even mentioning recruiting budgets….they forgot to mention the salary of Junie Baby, though. WAAAAAAYYYYY more than the recruiting budget. If the BCS thought they were worthy of a prime bowl, then UGA should have done just what they did….play them til the end. Had the roles been reversed, not one person would be complaining. They even neglected to show the defender shoving Mims to the ground prior to getting a taste of his own medicine. Should have been roughing the kicker, then offset by unsportmanship by Mims. However, if they had shown #50 doing his dirty play again, it would have gone against FOX trying to protray Mims as the aggressor. I’ve had the opportunity to see an unbiased game film. I can’t blame UGA for bringing the pain the whole game. There was more going on there than what meets the (FOX channel) eye. CMR should allow release of the film to every complaining whiner to see the adversity and animosity brought to the game by UH that was answered by UGA. This will be the only time I will ever speak out in defense of UGA so enjoy it!!!!!! Waaaaarrrrrr Eagle!!!!

All these bowl commitees aught to me ashamed of themselves for these BCS matchups. They were sad to watch and it’s going to get worse. You had an opportunity to match UGA vs USC, which would have been a classic Rose Bowl. Then you had another great matchup, OK vs VT in the Orange Bowl. You still would have sold your tickets. We fans know you have to fill the stands and sell tickets. You can’t tell me that the UGA faithful wouldn’t have made that trip. It would have been worth it. But you chose tradition. I was so glad to see USC blow out Illinois. Nothing against Illinois and Ron Zook, they had a great season. But they should have been in the Capital One Bowl playing against guess who, FLORIDA. That would have been a great story line to follow and great game.
And don’t feel sorry for Hawaii and June Jones. they wanted to prove to everyone they belong in the BCS. The way everyone hyped them up saying they’re passing game is unstoppable and how this was going to be the best game of all the BCS games. If I can recall, they still had they’re starters in the game trying to make things happen.
Hey, UGA was playing with a chip on there shoulder and wanted to show everyone why they shouldn’t have been passed up. Hopefully with the way USC and UGA played, this will be a message to the BCS bowl commitees to consider better matchups and greater games to watch than what we saw yesterday.

Don’t we all get a little weary of the experts, like Corso and Herbystreet, the idiot announcers on Faux, Lou Holtz, and the list goes on and on and on.
Knowledgable fans know a few SEC teams can play championship ball, that each year a few teams arise from other parts of the country that are pretty good-Missouri, West Virginia, USC, others. Often the Notre Dames, OSU’s, and Michigan’s well deserve their rankings, other times they are highly overrated.
The WAC really got exposed early by ECU taking care of Boise State. ECU has no storied past, they just have to schedule teams in the South such as Virginia Tech.
Hats off to Hawaii. They have a tough time scheduling meaningful games. But primarily, if you read the Honolulu newspapers today, no one out there is saying anything except we had our butts handed to us last night. That team will be better for it. After all, look what happened to Boise State after they took a whipping from the DAWGS.

Great game for the Dawgs, especially on the defensive side of the ball, sadly Thom Brennaman, who was Fox’s main play by play was so pitiful. His tasteless and actually stupid tirade about CMR and the Dawgs trying to score on 4th down just capped off a night of errors and incompetence. Fox should be ashamed of its coverage, starting with a very mediocre pre-game show, 3rd rate announcers, and lack of replays marring both UH’s and UGA’s enjoyment of the game. “GO DAWGS”

This game was a no win situation. If we beat them, well we’re suppose to. If they beat us, we the laughing stock of the country. If they had such a powder puff schedule then why are they talking about all of these NCAA records? Are they going to have an * next to all the records that they shattered which was only obviously because of a powder puff schedule?

Seems like most of the Bowl games were really fun to watch over the weekend except for guess who, the BCS games. It would have been better to send Michigan to the Rose Bowl if you’re going with tradition. USC vs Michigan would have been a better “TRADITIONAL” match up and better game.
I know the Capital One Bowl turned out to be a great game, probally the best game of all the bowl games. But it would have been fun to watch Ron Zook go up against Florida and beat them. I would have enjoyed watching that.
But the way things are stacking up for next year, we may see USC vs UGA down in Miami for BCS title. It would be fun to see Moreno (UGA) and McKnight (USC). UGA Talent against USC Talent. Tailback U vs Tailback U. Herchel Walker (UGA) and O.J. Simp…….No Marcus Allen (USC) And not to mention two of the hottest coaches in College Football.

Maybe next year UGA does not lose two games like a real National Champion contender, so all you Dawg fans get life, quit whineing, and beat the vols, and a Spurrier for once, and hopefully Tech will continue to give you the game like they have since 2004, and maybe beat UF more than once in 15 years, and you will win the BCS someday.

JC, the same reason why UGA didn’t get picked for the Rose bowl. Too much tradition, too much money behind the scenes, and too big of a chance that USC would get beat in a bowl game.
Illinois should have painted a S on there chest and “Stanford-ed out” the Rose bowl. That would have gotten those trojans boy’s attention.
BTW, while I was taking a dump, it reminded me to send an email to the BCS, Fox announcers, and the idiot that took a cheap shot at Henderson. You know, that guy that should of had crazy glue in his helmut and looked like Juvenile… “Back that azz up”

Hey AltamahaDawg,
The reason it’s been rattled off so much is because it’s so obvious and deserves an answer. Quit ignoring the obvious and realize you played a pretty weak schedule, lost 2 games and didn’t make it to the SEC Championship. You don’t deserve to go to the National Championship. You finally beat FL again and let’s see FL loses to Michigan who lost to Appalachian State. Oh yeah, you beat that powerhouse AL by 3 and an Auburn team who lost to South FL. Not to mention that UGA could have very easily been blown out by Tech. Give me a break! Go hang up your #34 jersey and cut the mullet.

Just think, with a playoff system Georgia would be moving to the next round. Who knows what could have happened…but with the current system we will never know. If Georgia is not going to be national champion, let them lost it on the field, not in a subjective poll.

You know, I’ve been rewatching the Fox broadcast on my DVR and it got me wondering why out of the blue, Thom Brennaman takes a shot at the SEC as they compare to the Big Ten. I’m thinking “what does that have to do with the price of oranges as it relates to this game”?
Well, as it turns out, if you refer to the Wikipedia entry on this guy, it states the following:
the Big Ten Network named Brennaman as their lead play-by-play announcer for college football games beginning in September 2007.

I loved watching the game. GA played great and, as a UT and SEC fan, was very proud of you guys and our conference. However, KC, please do not compare a football game to what happened at Pearl Harbor. There are 1177 U.S. servicemen permanently entombed in the sunken U.S. Arizona alone in Pearl Harbor. Football and this terrible day in our history have nothing in common.

First, congratulations to the Dawgs for a pretty much awesome performance (that is tough for this Vol to say, but you really looked good). Thanks for letting me go to bed early too because you dominated from the whistle clearly.
I guess the next is somewhat of a scold though. When Cooper was coach at Ohio State he would cry and moan about how his team was not getting respect and being considered for the NC…after losing two or three games Don’t do that Dawgs. You did not get the job done early in the season, and fortunately the polls supported you anyway. Next year do the job BEFORE saying you are the best in the country. Until there is a playoff system, two losses (one where you got stomped), do not get you into the Show (yes I know LSU has two losses but both were triple overtime). Do the job ALL year next time…and then talk about how good you are.

I tried to kill time before the Georgia game by watching the Rose Bowl broadcast. Brent Musberger just bores me to death. He can’t shut up to save his life, he overanalyzes everything, and his infatuation with the word “Coach”, as in “Coach Zook,” “Coach Carroll”, etc., as if the whole team was the coach, just grates on my nerves. He can’t wait for his color guy (Kirk Herbstreit yesterday) to quit talking so he can add his own color commentary.
Someone please put this pompous a$$ out to pasture, or at least remind him that he’s not calling the Brent Musberger Bowl. In my opinion, now that Keith Jackson is gone, no one does it better than Ron Franklin. I loved it when he and Mike Gottfried did SEC night games for ESPN.

Great comments on the game. It is a dawggone shame that the network cheaped out on those lousy announcers. Could not believe the incessant blathering about how awesome Hawaii’s team was, blah, blah, blah, while the entire time the Dawgs were beating them like one of those island drums..Was really annoyed at the disrespect shown to Coach Richt when he challenged the 4th down catch (and was spot on in his challenge). I guess the rules are only supposed to be enforced if the game is not out of hand. GIVE ME A BREAK..I had the pleasure of attending UGA 1979-1983, and this team looked suspiciously like some of those teams we watched back then. Cannot wait for next season, go Dawgs..

agree with your comments on the announcing at the game. close to being the worst I have ever heard and especially bout the dogs throwing in the end zone on 4th down. should have run it in and then they would have had a gripe. But why is no one talking about the length of the game and the screw ups by the officials? We are #4 and beat the #10 team by 31. And now some of the national media have the nerve to start arguing USC should jump UGA and share the national title??? THIS SYSTEM SUCKS Our own Mark Schlabach has an article on ESPN entitled “Trojans look like nation’s best with noone left to play.” SCHLABACH - STUFF IT! Seriously, this is so predictable. If you had the sense God gave a dead cat you would see plain as day why UGA should be laying for the NC. Firts off I wold like for you to tell me the page and section number in the ncaa athletics guide that list winning a conference championship as a prerequisite for playing in the national championship game. 2nd if there was even the least bit of integrity in the polls instead of the blatant political b****** then when no. 1 and 2 lost , no. 3 & 4 move up , not no. 3 moves up and no. 4 drops a spot?? And you have people like kirk herbstreit whining and talking down the Dawgs because he can’t get over the spanking he got by the Bulldogs in the ‘93 Citrus bowl where all he could muster in the passing game was 110 yards. It’s prejudices from him and other so called sports writers like him that have relegated the polls to nothing more than ink on paper to take up blank space in the evening edition. And if you think there is not blatant and outright favoritism in the polls by the biased sport writers then you sir are simply a fool. Whether you like it or not Georgia has a legitimate claim to the NC game as much as any team. Granted this will never stop until the ncaa finally does the right thing and installs a playoff system, but don’t look for that soon because that wold require the front office people at the schools to stop whoring out the schools to the bowl organizers for the millions of dollars handed out every year.

UGA is on the same trip Auburn rode in 2004. Auburn 12-0, SEC champs, #3 in the country was ignored by BCS for the NC game. Southern Cal scored 55 points destroying OKlahoma, we beat a good VATech team in the Sugar Bowl. USC was best team in the country, but we had no control to challenge them as UGA had no choice about Rose Bowl or NC game. ..Cigar smoking back rooms have power…The only difference Auburn scored 78 points on Tenn, in two games, UGA loss to Tenn, VERY COSTLY LOSS.

Boy, I can’t wait till next year when our dawgs win the SEC. Then we can be real men and root for Auburn or LSU to go to the NC game. We know the winner of the SEC doesn’t deserve to go, but one of the other teams from our conference should be #1.

Hey WarEagle,
Check the margin of victory of USC vs Va Tech and Auburn vs Va Tech (3). Also, USC destroyed Auburn 22-0 at Jordan Hare the year before your whimsical run. Deep down you are glad that you did not get to face USC so you can forever whine about what might have been. We know what would have happened, USC would have scored and scored on that Auburn team.

It’s certainly a good thing that this thing called the internet is available for those that want to call UGA fans ‘classless’, because I suspect that nary a one of you would have the guts to say it to our faces. That means you AtlantaNative62…and Dave…and whoever calls him/her self DawgFanMan, what in blazes do you mean CMR will be hated in a few years? Not be anybody that knows ‘s**t from Shinola’.
For all of you that were feeling sorry for Hawaii and didn’t think Georgia should have played hard - by the way it appeared to me that our guys did ease up in the second half - you got to be kidding me. They lobbied for the game…they wanted to show everybody they were deserving…and they got their butts beat. What were we supposed to do, let ‘me win?
And for the guy that hasn’t yet seen Georgia’s Marcus Howard recover that fumble, you weren’t looking (admittedly the announcers were no help), but the kid, Howard, immediately fell on it…had possession in the end-zone (which is a touchdown if you didn’t know)…then had the Hawaii offensive lineman rip it out.

First of all: Congrats to UGA for a great game and season! 2008, win your conference then you MAY be selected for the championshi game! You have little control over that fact! USC won, with help, the PAC 10 championship, and played in The Rose Bowl! Who we played is not up to USC! It really makes little difference who we play! That we get to play in the Rose Bowl is wonderful to us, we really look forward to this game! We have played in two ‘Championship Games’ win one, loose one! We have played Alabama, and Georgia and Arkansas, twice, and won these games. Next year, we will play Ohio State, we will beat them too! USC will play anyone with ‘The Rep’ and better yet, ‘The Money’! We would love to come to Athens and play and you could come and play us in LA if you so desire! If you win, we will not bad mouth you at all, we will honor you! Problem is that if we are healthy, have all our men at the game, beating us is a chore! Great season, maybe we meet in the ‘Championship Game’ 2008! Good Luck!

Moredummiescomeout- The reason I say that UGA put the 11 best players on the field is because that is what coaches for every team in america are paid to do. Stoops is 0-4 in the last 4 BCS bowl games. He is the most overrated coach in the America. How many times has he lost and sometimes by huge blowouts when he has been favored. God in 2001, lost to OK St which knocked him out of the NC picture. Then again in 2002 lost to OK ST which knocked him out of the NC game again. Lost to LSU in the NC game, then to KS ST in the Big 12 championship, lost to Fresno State, then to WV and I am sure I missed a couple. He freaking blows big games where he is favored every year.

Michigan is 7-3 vs SEC, and Wisconsin I bet has an even record eventhough they lost last couple. And Paterno has best bowl record by far over any other conference or coach. 23 wins I think. Sec might be best but not by a lot in bowl wins. This year is a fluke, Bama by 6, Auburn by 3, TN by 4, GA by 31, and KY doesn’t not count. Half of FSU was suspened. Hell, the great Spurrier was only 6-5 in bowls during his reign at FL with all those “great Fl teams”.

Actually-T. Moore is pretty dead on. He is right. Anyone who knows me on here knows I am DIE HARD UGA fan PERIOD. But the bottom line is if we even show up in Knoxville…or beat a very average SC team…we are playing in the BCS game…as long as we beat LSU in SEC Titale game that is as well. But T. Moore’s bottom line is right. You can spin it any way you want to…..well they lost to this team….and SC made it to #6…and UT is ranked…or Stanford sucks really bad…it doesn’t matter. The bottomline of his article is to simply say that if UGA would have handled their own business when the time came to play the games they needed to win…UT/SC…then more than likely all the crying wouldn’t be happening. D. Ellis, just because Terrance Moore states some absurdly obvious point about how UGA would have had a better record had it not lost any games, doesn’t mean he has any kind of valid purpose to his critisism of the Dawgs thinking that are one of the best teams in the country now.
Everything the states is pure opinion. The entire process is opinion. One is just as valid an another. I suppose he needs to send a letter to the west coast newspapers and blast them for believeing in thier teams abilities at this point of the season as well.
I’m getting sick and tired of the media, who is responsible for this entire situation, going out of thier way to bait the Georgia players/coaches/fans, just for the purpose of critisizing them when they say, what every single person with a pulse would say in that situation.
Personally, I knew LSU/OSU had to be the ones “selected”. I would have done the same thing. There is not a process, no kind of rules, just pure manipulation. Understood. But the argument reamains that UGA IS one of the best 2 teams in the nation on Jan 7, 2008. Doesnt matter. So what?
It’s pretty clear the whole deal is subject to opinions and politics and if talking up UGA gets attention now, sets up a better case for next year, well …guess what? whine away.(I think our detractors are either too dumb to realize its 99% about getting more attention for the next year at this point…..or maybe they realize it and its buggin them to know that) Either way, its fun to see them stew about such a great UGA year, and if all they have is that they dont think we should have been playing for a national title.. yea, you really got us there.

I am a Georgia girl living in Michigan and let me say to those of you making racist remarks and talking trash…be ashamed of yourselves. It’s this sort of behavior that makes outsiders think we are a bunch of dim-witted, inbred, moonshine swilling, outhouse pooping, racist ignorant rednecks.
The internet is global and if I hadn’t grown up and lived most of my life in the South I would think the same thing about you as well. I fight this stereotype everyday as soon as I open my mouth and some mis-informed Michigander hears that I’m southern.
Georgia has indeed had an incredible year in football and we have much to boast about. But you can be proud of your team and show endless pride and team spirit without bad-mouthing our opponents and making stupid racist comments and ‘ritin lik yer tarded or sumthin’. You just reinforce the stereotype and make others believe the “dumb southerner” mythology.
Please exhibit the hospitality, class and grace that we know southerners and particularly Georgians exemplify.
Stop making us look stupid to the rest of the world. You can be proud the the Bulldogs without being a butthead.

Southern Idiot,
Actually, Hell, Michigan is about 50 miles from where I live but if you’d paid attention to what I wrote, you’d have realized that I’m not a Yankee, I was born in Georgia and lived in Georgia the majority of my life. This stint in Michigan is temporary.
I’m asking as a Georgian and a UGA alumnae who bleeds red and black just like those of you who still live in my beloved state to use some manners in a global forum.
People who have never lived in the south nor visited the south have a skewed perception of our people and our culture. ‘Ritin lik this, making racist comments and telling people to “go to hell” only perpetuates a false sterotype. Have some pride in yourself and your heritage.
Southerners are gracious people who for the most part are not stupid, rude, redneck or racist. We are a wonderful people with a full and rich legacy of learning, social justice and hospitality. Exhibit this to the world not the “stupid” stereotype.
Like I said, you can exhibit endless team spirit and pride without resorting to name calling and mud slinging. In fact, it makes you the much better person.

Soupy entrails,
I’m neither a Yankee nor a carpetbagger. I’m a Georgian living in Michigan at the moment because my husband is serving our country in the Coast Guard and this is where we are stationed. I was born in Atlanta, lived in Georgia for over 30 years and graduated from the University of Georgia.
I guess it’s just wishful thinking on my part to expect good southern manners from someone who obviously is incapable of reading for content. I’ve said twice in previous posts that I’m a Georgia girl living in Michigan temporarily where I experience the misperception about southerners on an almost daily basis.
BTW, people in Michigan aren’t Yankees they’re Midwesterners and many of them are nice if you’re not too narrow minded and prejudiced to get to know them. In fact, it was precisely my education from UGA that taught me to treat others with respect, and that there was much to learn from people different from me.
I also learned that you can be a huge football fan, have a good clean rivalry without resorting to swearing, hating, misguided assumptions about the opponent and making slanderous remarks.
What did your education from UGA teach you? I assume you matriculated there since you feel compelled to say nasty things to complete strangers after misreading their thoughts in the name of school spirit.

shame on you,do not expect to post on a uga blog after a big win and make ridiculous comments and not suffer rude replys.the dog team and fans went into this game with a chip on their shoulder after being slighted by the bcs and the national media.i am sorry you were offended by the”overrated”chant,i was at the game and i didn’t like it either.the chant was from the uga endzone and it looked like the student section at uga home games, mostly young people.i hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but college students and other twenty-somethings that have spent the day drinking in the french quarter are sometimes rude and obnoxious.i am sure that never happened when you were at uga.as for richt disputing the call,it was his right as a coach who wanted the best for his second and third string players.these guys get very few chances to play and their coach wanted them to succede,as he should!it would be a poor coach that didn’t stand behind his players when a bad call was made.there was no attempt to”run up”the score.if richt wanted to do that he would have left his starters in the game.the passes into the endzone were the back-up qb’s call.again this kid has had very few chances to play.he wanted to throw a touchdown pass in the sugar bowl on national tv.would’nt you?think about it,if you worked hard all year and finally had a chance to play in a big game with all your family and friends watching wouldn’t you want a td?uh was totally outclassed and had richt really wanted to score big, like seventy points,he could have done it easily.the uga fans and the uh fans got along well, partying before and after the game.again i was there and saw it in person!if there was any shame in this game it belongs at the feet of the bcs bowls that scheduled this travesty!

They got it back three times as much as they deserved!! Jesus wasnt talking about football when HE said turn the other cheek!! Get over it or quit watching the game!! Maybe you should take up bird watching or freezby golf if you dont like hard hittig football fun! Shame on you MRS. Shane #1,
Please re-read my comments. I have no beef with how Georgia handled the game, how Richt handled the calls or for the most part how the fans comported themselves. As a fan, I understand the frustration of being skipped over in the polls by LSU and as a former student I’ve drunk my fair share of beer while watching a game back in the good old days when you could haul a sofa out on the tracks and watch from the endzone. Heck every team out there has over-exuberant students who wear funny wigs and paint their beer bellies team colors. That’s all part of the college fan package. I have no quarrell with any of this.
My comments are directed at the people making posts on this particular website. The internet is global. People all over the world can read what is posted here. When Georgia fans taunt other fans and each other with incredibly rude and occasionaly racist rhetoric, it makes the Bulldog nation look whiny, mean and stupid which reaffirms to those with bad opinions of southerners in the first place that we are a bunch of ignorant, beer swilling, cousin-marrying, racist whiners who lack shoes and indoor plumbing.
I’m saying that We’re Not! We are smart, civilized and gracious. Who cares what the national media thinks about our team? We know better. Who cares what the polls say? We know that we are among the elite teams in college football year after year. The Bulldogs have been a class act ever since I’ve been a fan sometime in the mid-1960’s. Vince Dooley was gracious, Ray Goff was gracious, Jim Donan was a great guy and Mark Richt is an impecable human being and an exemplary role model for the young men on his team and for those of us in the stands.
All I’m saying is that I resent mouthy people online acting all trashy and ignorant tarnishing the shine on the School and the football team that I have loved for 40 years. And, in doing so, reinforcing a false sterotype about the region of this country that I adore and long to call home again soon.

Dear Bill King,
How is it that a writer of your caliber and insight into the game of college football attracts so many disgruntled, foul-mouthed, bitter, bitter fans?
I give up. This is not what Georgia football is about. It’s about pride and team spirit. I’m sorry that the rest of the world will continue to few southerners and our fans as tantamount to the hillbillys from Deliverance. Y’all squeal like a pig now ya hear!
I intend to continue to prove to the rest of the world that to be southern means you are kind and gracious and to be be a Bulldog means you have great pride in your team regardless of record year after year after year. I refuse to be some a-hole with a chip on my shoulder because Fox has bad announcers, the BCS is screwed-up and Georgia was slighted. I hold my team in the highest esteem and I don’t intend to embarrass them by acting like toothless high school drop out with nothing better to do than say foul things about each other and other football teams.
Note to the rest of the world…the conversation on this website is not representative of true Southerners nor legitimate Georgia football fans Most of us have a much better vocabulary and a greater IQ.

Dear Big Dawg,
You are indeed a good man/woman (it’s hard to know in the anonymous world of the internet). Thank you for your kind comments. There was a book published at one time about the GA/GA Tech rivalry called “Good Clean Hate”. I love the title because that’s what it’s all about. A little teasing and a little razzing is all in good fun during football season.
My issue is this: I get tired of people asking me if I grew up with indoor plumbing when they find out I’m from Georgia (which is always apparent as soon as they hear my accent) It’s just that a lot of the really hateful, nasty, bitter things that have been said here by people like “I hate Yankees” only reinforces that sort of thinking with the rest of the world. I just want everyone to know how great we are as a culture and as a school and football heritage and not think of us as Tobacco Road rejects.
Here’s to being #1 next year! Cheers!

I went to Detroit several times and got that same thing you get , but actually I just learned how to joke it off myself and not let the redneck jokes bother me. it did not take me long to learn there were more rednecks up north than down here. One of my best friends in the world is from New Jersey but he knows I get tired of the ran in the ground redneck jokes. My advise to you would be get back to GA while you still can, hurry ,hurry before they turn you into a sliced GA peach!!! just kiddin, by the way I am a guy, OH NO!! people are gonna think im getting soft, I had better stop before I dont like yankees turns against me too!! just playing, GOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am eager to see how the poles show up after the NC. UGA should be #2 or 3 I guess,Kansas proved me wrong thats for sure. It really bothers me that OSU has not even beat a top 20 team this year and they are in the NC!!Whats wrong with that picture? Boy they are in for a beating!! Kinda reminds me of the rocky 3 movie when they asked MR. T the prediction of the fight and He said…..”pain”!! Thats my prediction as well. They would have matched up alot better with Arkansas I think. Missouri took a major dose of disrespect from the BCS, They should have at least got into the Rose bowl to spank those Mighty,Mighty,Mighty Trojans who accomplished such a great task of defeating 13th ranked illinois! they defeated OSU, HAAAAAAA!!!! and OSU really believes they can beat A power house LSU team? I have very low expectations of the broadcast teams for these games, so it didn’t bother me much when it was poor in the Sugar Bowl.
The part that I thought was terrible, was that 90% of the pregame broadcast was talk about Hawaii, mostly Colt Brennan… there was a little blurb on Richt, but you honestly wouldn’t have known that UGA even had a QB, let alone one that some people have projected as a high first round select in a couple of years.
I understand that Brennan is a Senior and had great stats this year so he deserved the lion’s share of pre-game broadcast… but how about something like…”and on the other side, The Dawgs can throw it around pretty good with their youn Soph QB who has improved greatly since starting as a Frosh and has a cannon for an arm. That would have taken about 4 seconds and given some balance.

I really believe the Gator comment by the fox crew was intentional.Just trying to stir up Dawg fans!I just laughed at that and couldnt believe the praise for Hawai even when they were being pounded like raw meat!!How about Lee Corso saying he always knew this was a good Georgia team? after predicting we would not stop Brennan. Did UGA really need to beat a big bunch of highschool kids to prove themselves after they pounded FLA, AUB,KEN,and Tech the same way? they must be blind not to see UGA had sacked Tebow the same way!!Its back to being a nobody again for poor little Colt. Maybe he can get a job as a UGA water boy or something he sure want make it in the NFL, You have to be able to stand up to pass there, you cant throw on your rump or cry like a sissie when you are sacked!!OH there I go being hard on the coltster again, Im sorry ,Im just a little sad that one of you guys at the game didnt offer him a lolly pop. Big Dawg,
This is completely off subject, but I’m interested in hearing about your work in the music industry. I worked at 90.5 FM (WUOG) while I was at UGA back in the days when REM performed at Tyrone’s O.C. for $1.50 on Friday and Saturday nights. They got their contract with IRS Records the year I graduated and recorded “Chronic Town”. I loved the 40 Watt Club, Little Tigers, Pylon and Love Tractor. Outside of football, my other Athens passion was the music scene.
BTW, Detroit stinks. I live on the west coast of Michigan and except for the snow and the occasional rude/ignorant references to my heritage, it’s kinda like living at the beach.

Thank you. You’re kind as well. Believe me, I understand saying something mean in the heat of the moment. I believe I made a pretty snide IQ reference earlier when “I hate yankees” told me to bugger off and visit some Michigan websites. Honestly it’s the last thing I’d ever want to do!
I come here because I love my team, I love reading the hometown news and frankly from time to time I get homesick. I just got back home a few days ago from a trip to Atlanta and already the 2 feet of snow has me longing to see some red earth.
Also, thanks for understanding what I have been trying to say in this forum. I’m proud of Georgia, the state and I’m proud of Georgia, the university and her myriad sports teams (especially football). It bugs me to see people intentionally try to make us look dumb and mean. There is never a good reason to tell a total stranger to bugger off, no matter how big a fan you are or what team they support, or how bad the commentators are or how stupid the bowl system is.
And, there is never a need to intentionally mispell and use bad grammar like “Knowshon Moreno” did in an earlier post. I know it wasn’t him…it was someone making fun of him and it isn’t funny in the least. And calling total strangers queer and homo is downright bigoted.
The anonymity of the internet makes it easy to say things you wouldn’t say to someone’s face. It’s just a shame that people use it to say really dumb mean things because they know they can get away with it.
It’s not just misrepresenting Southerners and Georgia fans…as human beings we are all better than that.
BTW, just so you know, the FOX announcers’ comments in the 4th quarter that Richt was trying to pad the score because the 2nd and 3rd string went for a T.D. and not a field goal made me furious too. I knew that Richt was thinking a field goal was the sure thing and would pad the score while letting his backup quarterback try to get it in the endzone was an opportunity for him to get some experience. This option was definitely not a sure score even though it would have been a bigger score had Cox succeeded.
Only Munson should ever be allowed to call a Georgia game but alas, it seems that we will have to suffer butthead sports commentators from time to time that have no concept of the Bulldog legacy or the Bulldog nation. Let’s all just secretly laugh at them and speculate on whether or not they actually graduated from a journalism program. I personally think NOT.

Big Dawg, I graduated UGA in ‘82 so I was there when we were Nat. Champs. Unfortunately, I watched Lindsey Scott on TV because like most poor students, tickets to the game were not to be had. Larry’s call for that game was great fodder for getting drunk at Frat parties from then on. Lindsey was in my first journalism class. So were over 300 other students. As far as I know he only attended the first day, but I’m pretty sure he passed.
If you played for Diamondback, then you must have lived in MN for a while (unless there are two bands with the same name) so you know how it feels to be so far from home in snow up to your butt. Let me know if you have any recent CDs I could listen to. I’m more hymn oriented when it comes to personal taste in Christian music, but my brother used to be huge fan of Petra and I have a lot of friends that like Jars of Clay. I have a couple of Sarah Groves CD’s but I’m pretty sure she’s not you. :-)
Oh and Buckhead Bill, George Carlin says that there are 2,443 dirty words. I agree with you. I think most of them have been used here including a “butthead” by me. Your momma was a smart lady.

Dear Soupy Entrails, I “know” Michiganders are Yankees and you “know” Michiganders are Yankees but Michiganders will tell you right quick that they are midwesterners. The little town I live in has a statue of a Yankee soldier but the lilly-livered coward is facing north. All good Confederate statues are supposed to face north to “stare down the enemy” and vice-versa, but I suppose this poor Yankee was homesick cause he’s got is back facing south.
BTW, many of my ancestors fought for the Confederacy too…my dad’s big into geneaology and so far we haven’t unearthed any Yankees. My G.G. grandfather was taken P.O.W. at Gettysburg and was incarcerated in a prison camp about 150 miles from where I now live. I have credentials to belong to the United Daughters of the Confederacy but amazingly, there isn’t a chapter near me here in MI.
Oh and “I Don’t Like Yankees”, are you sure this is a football website? I could have sworn it was a one upmanship “up yours” website by all the name calling and trash-talking that has gone on around here. Big Dawg was just being a gentleman by apologizing. I’m happily married but that doesn’t mean I can’t be interested in hearing about his music career and I doubt very seriously he’s interested in courting a middle-aged married woman. Oh and not an art major. Journalism major. That’s probably even more disgusting because it means I try to rite good and stuff.

Miss Shame on Y’all, my GG grandfather was also captured and imprisoned by yankees. My Great grandmother would tell us of having to take the horses down by the creek so the yankees wouldn’t steal them. My family goes back generations in the South, and even to the Revolutionary War.
The reason I jumped your comments was that I saw your name attacking someone named “I DON’T LIKE YANKEES.” That’s it.
I also have lived out of the South. My sojourn was 24 years. Now that I’ve moved back to the north Atlanta area for a few years, I find Georgia overrun by yankees, Mexicans, South Americans, Asians, Russians, Africans (first generation), you name it. Not even close to the same South I left 24 years ago. Frankly, Georgia has been sold out.
Anyway, best of luck to you and your family.

Altamaha-
Once again I agree with your well thought out posts, especially the “next year” comments. The big difference in where we are now versus other years when we are critisized for our “just wait til next year” hopes is that we have the essential elements in place for it to actually mean something beyond hope.
1)We have a couple of players who will garner the extra attention needed because of possible heisman consideration for the next couple of years.
2)We have a good strength of schedule to work with (hopefully not so strong that we trip up).
3)We have a strong, talented, and deep roster… with one helluva new class coming in. Plus another incredible group of red-shirts having their “coming out” party.
4)We have what was already one of the best head coaches in the country, who in my opinion had a break out season by feeling the liberation that passing on the reins of the offense afforded him. I have a wallpaper on my opening page that shows him in his black pullover with his temper flared and his finger in the face of the referree. I loved seeing him pumping his arms up and down trying to get the fans loud and fired up at the Sugar Bowl. This point alone, IMHO, may be the octane booster needed to get the dawgs to the next level.
Several other points that could be mentioned also give this old dawg more hope for “just wait til next year” than I’ve ever had. I just hope and pray that the guys realize what they have in front of them and behave between now and the next kick-off. We truly hold our destiny in our hands, and have an excellant chance to win em all.

War Eagle-
I think you, potentially, will understand this more than most of my Dawg brethren who will think I’m a bit treasonous by saying it, but there is a real part of me that is glad that we got skipped over (if we did) for NC consideration. Two losses, and the circumstances of those losses left us undeserving of consideration… in the absence of a playoff, at least. There is no doubt in my mind that we should have been playing USC in a bowl this year, but even with that and a win there would be naysayers saying we didn’t deserve it. I hope we can take our year and use it to make a true run that the Country can’t deny. It’s in our own hands, we have the ingredients to give it a shot, and I truly believe that CMR has built something that will make us competitive for years to come.
What do you think of CTT’s move to change to the spread? It really surprised me, and I guess I’m so old fashioned that it seems like a radical move.

I agree with I DONT LIKE YANKEES about everything he has said. Especially the comment he made about yankees having oversized noses.
