Building up the ‘Bows

Checking in from vacation, I see that the media pumping of Hawaii’s Warriors and the sniping about this Sugar Bowl being a lose-lose situation for Georgia continue.

I know Hawaii has a fine quarterback who’s got an impressive stat sheet. But I can’t help but be reminded of the similar buildups of Boise State and Oklahoma State before the Dawgs met them.

Granted, Hawaii looks to be better than either of those teams were. And, yes, Oklahoma learned the hard way last year that these non-BCS conference intruders can smack you upside the head if you’re not careful.

But I think maybe some folks are getting a little carried away here in painting Hawaii as some sort of unstoppable force. Yeah, they throw the ball a lot and have scored a lot of points against questionable opposition.

Georgia also has scored a lot of points. Against much better teams. The Dawgs’ defenders also seem to have gotten up to speed in the latter half of the season and have gotten a lot of sacks, even against highly touted QBS.

The only real danger is if UGA sleepwalks into this game (and we all know that has happened occasionally in the past). But I think Mark Richt will do whatever is necessary to see that isn’t the case this time.

As for the lose-lose business, I understand the line of thinking: Hawaii is a largely untested WAC team. If Georgia doesn’t beat them badly, it’s an underwhelming win. And if Georgia loses, it’s a gigantic upset.

Such thinking overlooks the third option, however. If Georgia wins big in a BCS bowl against a previously undefeated media darling team, it’s a GREAT way to start the new football year.

The Dawgs can make a statement with this game. That’s what the SEC’s new Great Motivator needs to be stressing to his team.

Here we go again. It’s time for all the mutts to talk about how great their team. You are the biggest bunch of delusional rednecks I have ever seen. Don’t you know that it is silly to root for your team? Well, I’ll step aside so you muttlanders can talk about how great you are. I have to get up early for a breakfast meeting with my good friend Phil Fulmer tomorrow. My prediction: Hawaii 110 to -7.

I see what you mean about the Boise State and Ok State comparisons. I am afraid this game is smelling a lot more like West Virginia and Boston College than those two games.

I’m concerned the team is going to go through the motions and get beat again. Obviously if we play like we should, we will definitely win.

Bryan G, I’m confident in this team. IMO, this is a different type of team. Dawgs is playing with so much energy, we’re playing good sound football, can score with ease. I can’t explain it well, but, this Georgia offense can score on any defense. It’s different from last season, when I have to take a deep breath everytime we’re in the redzone. This year, we’re awesome in the redzone. I feel like we score with ease in the redzone. I expect us to punch it in with any formations. Not to mention, the defense feeds off the offense’s energy. Number of sacks is unreal, compared to the first half of the season.

To sum up how spoiled we Dawg fans have become, consider this:

After suffering through 20 years of second-rate finishes in the SEC, we are now playing in our third Sugar Bowl in six years, yet we are highly disappointed with the matchups in each one.

After trouncing Arkansas in the 2002 SECCG and finishing 12-1 and ranked #4 before the bowls, we draw the BCS’ worst team in Florida State who, at 9-4 and slotted #13, was the ACC’s automatic qualifier. The all powerful media wanted to see the red-hot new kid (Richt) face his lame-duck mentor (Bowden) in a match made in Hollywood. No one from Georgia, especially Richt, wanted that scenario in what seemed like a no-win situation. CMR did all he could to keep the score down without risking a loss to the short-handed Seminoles. Even after the win, dawg fans were less than satisfied.

In 2005 the Dawgs again won the SECCG convincingly against an impressive LSU team looking for their second shot at the MNC game in three years. UGA’s reward? They get another opponent ranked outside of the top ten. West Virginia was a relatively unknown team who won the Big East in a down year for that conference. The Dawgs were caught napping as the fired-up Mountaineers ran off the first 28 points of the game just barely into the 2nd quarter. The sleeping giant finally awoke to mount a furious rally only to fall 38-35 thanks largely to a successful WVU fake punt at the game’s end. Despite the huge comeback, Dawg fans were obviously disappointed with the loss.

Another year, another Sugar Bowl (though not as SEC champs this time), another dreaded BCS draw. The Dawgs not only get slighted by the illogical polls, but they now must face Cinderella 2007, those media darlings from Honolulu, the Hawaii Warriors.

I did a little research to try and validate Yoo-Hah’s inclusion in the BCS. They won ‘em all, I knew that. They put up big offensive numbers, I knew that, too. Then I look up their schedule, whoa!! A one point win at La. Tech. Four other wins of a touchdown or less against San Jose State, Fresno State, Nevada and Washington. Only Boise State, currently sitting at #24 is the only ranked team the Warriors have faced all year! And they get a shot at a top 5 team in a BCS bowl? Looks like another West Virginia trap to me. CMR can say all he wants about the team not looking past UH, but c’mon man please!

If the Dawgs can’t get up for Spurrier and the Gamechickens, how can we expect them to get jacked for Brennan and the surf dudes? I just hope we don’t hit the snooze button too many times like we did in the ‘05 Sugar. Can’t wait to see who we get in next year’s bowl! Yeah, right.

Just win, baby! See ya’ll in Nawlins. GO DAWGS!!!!

Bill… this statement needs to replace “finish the drill” as our new motto for next year:

LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!

We need to beat the tar out of teams. We need to leave in our starters until the final whistle, like the Urban Myth did this year to pump up Teblow’s stats with every 3 yard TD run so he could win an overrated award.

We need to LEAVE NO DOUBT, so that hypocrites like Kirk Herbstreit (who last year had no issues with a Michigan team playing for the title when they didn’t even win their league title, yet this year led the media charge against the Dawgs) don’t have anyway to logically dis Dawgs, which seems to be the ESPN and SI pastime.

LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!

The whole game against UH will depend on our d-backs committing to their coverage, staying at home instead of overly aggressive play, and our linebackers mixing it up so that Colt doesn’t know whether to wind his butt or scratch his watch.

IMO, even in the worse case scenario, where we get down three t.d.’s early, they can’t stop our offense from coming back. I don’t think it will even come close to coming down to that. Its just two different leagues of play… UH has not seen hitting like they will see. They have not seen defensive speed like they will see. They have not faced an offense with so many weapons.

I am like Bill on this one, it smacks of Boise St. and Okie St.. a lot of hype about what an inferior team has done against inferior opponants. We are superior in talent, depth, size, and speed. We have better coaches (who will not allow the team to come out flat, there are way too many motivating factors at play in this game) that will be well prepared for the only thing UH can do, which is pass, pass, and then pass. The only way the game will be close is if we let up, and i agree with nascarfan, we need to move past that mentality for the sake of making a real run towards a Championship. For people to think that this game could be close is reason enough to take that attitude as a slap in the face and show the Country what we are capable of. We should have around 200+ yds rushing and 250+ in the air. I look for the defense to score at least once or twice on 6 turnovers. Nothing against Hawai’i… they are just way overmatched.

Willie Martinez has taken huge steps as a coordinator this season by not playing as careful as he prefers. The Hawaii game is his big chance to prove himself once and for all. The defense has got to at least slow these guys down and avoid a total track meet. The whole world will be watching.

Hawaii comes out pumped and plays us tough for the first half, possibly holding a small lead. UGA scores to take the lead on a Stafford-Bailey bomb as half-time approaches, then comes out strong and piles it up in half two as Moreno and Brown shred the sagging Rainbow D. Hawaii stays game but is unable to keep up as the pressure on Colt leads to an INT and fumble well behind the 50. The Back-in-Black part of CMR wants to run up the score but the nice guy part is still too much of a gentleman to let it get ridiculous. The clock reads 00.0 UGA 45 UH 20. Hands are shaken @ the Sugar Bowl logo and the Dawg Nation starts thinking about being locked and loaded next season where we will LEAVE NO DOUBT and not leave it up to ESPN politics to get into the BCS final. The season opens with the BIB Richt in firm control. Hey, it could happen.

If we sleepwalk thru the 1st quarter we are doomed. However, if we come out and make a defensive statment right away, like we did to Boise State a couple of years ago, we are going to be fine. We have to punch Brennan in the nose (figuratively) just like we did Zambrowski. We made this cocky b*d totally lose his cool to the point where he had to be pulled. We can do the same thing again. Remember that Boise State team went on to lose its next game (also against a BCS team), then ran the table in thier own conference. You just can’t compare the WAC. Even the Hawaii are saying that their schedule was weak except for Fresno State and Boise State. Hello! If you have to point to Fresno State and Boise State as national powers, you have no concept of what a national power is.

Now comes the real question. How do you defense them? Put in 6 DBs and hope you can cover everyone, or rush the crap out of the QB and plant him in the artificial turf enough times that he starts to play chuck and duck and the ints pile up (like Zambowski).

We will be fine as long as we come to play for 60 minutes.

Props Bill for having the courage to say that. Some ask why Georgia fans are so arrogant about this game. BECAUSE WE CAN BE. Our team has played seven bowl teams to Hawaii’s measley 3. Our team went 6-2 in the Southeastern conference. Hawaii played one BCS team all year (4-9 Washington). We are arrogant and have every right to be. Until Hawaii proves otherwise they are nothing more than a pretender that has played the softest schedule I have ever seen. Before you shed a tear for them remember that they have a chance to prove themselves, which is more than they deserve in my opinion. We’ll see what they do.

hotrod I really wish that were the case, but since I only work with facts, Ohio State was the National Champion in 1942. We would have received more votes.

Hawaii played only 2 teams with winning records and a lot of those teams with losing records played them close. They had to go to overtime to beat two teams with 4-7 records. Washington (I believe they were 3-8) came within a frog’s hair of scoring late and beating them.

It looks like a mismatch to me.

Hey Blackdawg,

Since you only work with facts, How about this one: 7 in a row! Not enough for ya? How ‘bout 8 in a row? 9 in a row? Will Paul Johnson still be around when it is 10 in a row? The silver-tongued PJ claims to have learned four words since his announcement of becoming foreman of the flats: “To Hell With Georgia!” he says. After three years on the job, he will surely add a fifth word to that phrase: Tech. He knows a thing or two about big rivalries, but UGA is NOT Furman, nor is it Army, Air Force, or even Notre Dame.

What’s up with Johnson anyway? He will not interfere with Tenuta’s gameplan for Fresno, nor will he coach Navy against Utah. It didn’t take long for him to take charge in Atlanta. Got my signing bonus. I’m on vacation. Ya’ll figure it out!

I applaud Blake Barnes’ decision to transfer to Delta State. He deserves a shot to prove himself on the field and it will not happen in Athens. That should open up another slot in this year’s (2008) recruiting class, although the coaches insist that the class is full. Several blue chippers are being turned away because of that fact. All reports lead to the assumption that we have one or two silent commits that only the insiders know about, and the rest of us are left in a guessing game.

The Dawgs will still end up with a top three recruiting class, just as they’ll begin next season ranked as high. IS IT A GREAT TIME TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDOG OR WHAT?!!!!

Now, now fellow dawg nations…like I said before, I wish we could use ” the University of Georgia football dept.official letterhead” as our resources for NCAA records, But , there is a four letter word that most of us UGA folks don’t know. It’s called B-I-A-S. I bring your attention, to 1943 and 44, we got our butts beat so bad by those smart guys on North Ave. it was almost impossible to spoon. Do we count those…NO!!! Why? I don’t know…maybe Coach Butt’s knew (I just love his name). Many of you young dawgs, don’t know the secret society of us spooners was started by Coach Butts.

I’d like to call the entire Nation to just settle down, or let’s spoon for a moment and remember…We always have a top 5 recruiting class Let’s hope that most of our class has been practicing the alphabet, so we don’t lose them to Hargrave again. Let’s settle for half, like always. If we can beat Hawaii, then we can start talking about being National Champion’s in February, instead of July like we always do.

You see, I remain objective and concerned, very concerned. I heard that fellow over there, Paul Johnson, say “To hell with Georgia”…and it scares me. It scares me a lot!!! I wish I had a big offensive linemen I could spoon for a while. That’s how afraid I am!!! You are too, but you’re still in the closet…Come on Out, Matt did and it feels great!!! You do understand he has more National Championship already as a head coach than then our beloved school has in over 100 years (Unless we count our women and horse sports).

Let’s rejoice, and be thankful this holiday season, and please don’t make Paul Johnson mad.

We are so grateful to be in a BCS bowl that X-mas does not matter as much to Hawaii. You are so right as a team to feel slighted. We are honored to play a team that has such a rich history. We usually go to a bowl that pays $800,000 but the BCS pays$4.5+ mill!!! That is just peanuts to you (no pun) but that is the biggest pay day U of Hawaii has ever had. The recruiting budget was $50,000, but just doubled by the owners of Rio (in Las Vegas). Our team has more HAIR than any team period. We have more Polynesians also. We have a very macho fan base coming and spending over $3,500 each to go to this Super Bowl as we see it. Our AD gave Georgia 5,000 tickets before they were even for sale and if they are in a Hawaii section expect to be given a whole different kind of Aloha if you act up and want to be ‘necks. Otherwise Merry X-mas. We come from a proud culture and paradise, and no one is from a majority ethnic background like ya’ll. If you want a great time move to the Georgia section because we do not take kukai. Imagine your section having 5,000 Hawaii fans. 15,000 are flying in and 10,000 more from the rest of the USA.The other nonseason ticket holders have had to pay $200-500 a ticket and believe that Hawaii will prevail. Imagine that every where in New Orleans Hawaii fans will be in town for 6 days since the flights are so booked to Hawaii for the tourist season. How many tourist in Atlanta for the weather- a few thousand? We get millions without a BCS game and then the Pro Bowl is always sold out. I digress, the Dawgs are so upset they are not in the BCS bowl but look to the possibility to beat an unbeaten team, make friends from Hawaii, and just have fun helping New Orleans. By the way Paul Johnson of Tech was a Hawaii coach and uses the option that is a pain to defend. We might throw that in with the passing game to say we used a few running plays. I hope that Georgia fans respect the people of Hawaii as it sounds so vile to be stupid and call names of the nicest people found any where. We are both guest of the fine city that has two BCS bowls to help it recover, but that is so unfair since they are not charity cases, or stupid either. We will be so happy to be tourist in a grand place. Hawaii has a big new Years eve party for 5,000 plus in New Orleans and each of us will spend over $150 that night with proceeds going to help pay for meals, and equipment for the team. That is how we help support them even with the big pay day. Imagine a perfect season 12-0. We do believe! Oh by the way New England uses the Hawaii offense and they are undefeated too. Gulp 8-)

For the most part you will be pleased by the Southern Hospitality of most Georgia fans. You must remember, however, that we are traveling to New Orleans for the sole purpose of watching your team get beat. We want to see you disappointed and dejected after the game. It’s not personal but we are personally vested in our team. I hear you have great fans, and I respect that, but this is a competition. You say imagine a perfect season 12-0. Aren’t you alreay at 12-0. Georgia and Hawaii are the only two undefeated teams in major college football since Oct. 6, and the Dawgs have the opportunity to take the nation’s current longest unbeaten streak away from you ourselves. Get ready for 12-1.

Bill, Boise State and Oklahoma State were in in their best year when we played them - the warriors are. Furthermore, those guys have ULTIMATE DEDICATION to Coach Jones. As much or more as our Dawgs have to Richt if that is possible. I mean these guys REALLY BELIEVE! And why shouldn’t they!? Look what he has done with this team using few resources. I believe we will win this game but after I watched a replay of one of their last games I am convinced their passing offense is for real and can score lightning fast. Our secondary is certainly susceptible to that. I’m looking at this game from a different angle (not unusual). The Key for the Dawgs will be as much in establishing and maintaining the running game from first pocession through 4 qtrs to control the clock. I do not think the warriors can pass all day on The Dawgs - but we sure as he!! can run all day on them.

We also come from a very proud tradition. We are AMERICANS (funny, I thought you were too - I guess you missed the part where we kept the Japanese from taking the Islands).

I am glad one team went undefeated this year and that we are playing them. The fact that Jones is not complaining all over the news that the warriors should be playing for the National Championship should tell you that many (including Jones) believe you had the easiest schedule in college football of any team in the top 25. Finally, for many of us SEC Football is more than a pastime - we live and breath it all year long. Your warriors are stepping into an arena where they have never been.

Why are you guys so worried about BVG going to SC? Sure everything clicked when he was here because he had the talent to do so. SC doesn’t have the talent and probably never will. Witness SOS statements that “Yep, yep I think we can contend this year for the East title.” Then turn around and lose to Vandy and tank the end of the season AND not make it to a bowl. I liked BVG while he was here, and he possibly could get a little more out of our current players (maybe, maybe not), but he had tons of talent during his dawg tenure. remember how everybody loves Muschamp? What we did to his last two D’s. I take BVG back in a heartbeat if Martinez left for some reason but just consider this as Spurrier trying to take another swipe at the dawgs.

You fleabags are too funny…

The reason ya’ll have such big mouths is because your foot’s in it most of the time (when you’re not barking).

“LEAVE NO DOUBT”…that you’re over-rated again. My gosh, you got lucky you beat GT and you think you should be playing for a NC.

Be glad you got Hawaii and not USC, then the motto would be “JUST KEEP IT CLOSE”.

no name calling in this blog, sorry. the game has 2 possibilities.sp? 1) Hawaii will be able to protect colt and pick apart your defense no matter how well your dbs play. you will score often but not quite enough. hawaii’s defense rises to the occasion, makes a few keys stops and we win by a few tds. 2) your defense gets to colt, gets him rattled, couple of turn overs and you guys win. simple. no need to name call or preach. good luck.

Not a Georgia Fan (now THERE’s an understatement that would choke my Bulldawg family) I am totally confident that Mark Richt will provide his team with all the sense of gratitas and motivation this team needs.

I hate Georgia with a passion which transcends logic (if the Dawgs were playing the Al Qaeda I’d have my head wrapped and pull for Osama ‘nem) but I think that Mark Richt is the classiest coach in the game right now.

Classy college coaches…that’s a travesty of a statement, oxymoron, malaprop…non-existent reality.

But Richt is classy and I think he’s my favorite coach. He’s going to give the Rainbows the respect they deserve and have this team ready to play like their lives depended on it.

So paranoid dogs, relax. All the national pubs I’ve read have Georgia winning the game by a minimum of 20 to 24 points at the least.

Go scratch your fleas.

I’m trying to decide if VanGorder replacing Tyrone Nix is a good thing or bad thing for Georgia. Georgia fans know as well as anyone that VanGorder is a top-notch defensive coordinator, but Nix’s defense always give Georgia fits, even when we win.

We’ve only averaged about 16 a game against SC since Spurrier arrived. I doubt VanGorder will do any better than that. I’m actually kind of glad to see Nix leave the SEC East. If anything, Georgia’s understanding of VanGorder’s defensive schemes should give us an advantage over other SEC offenses that have to play them.

Blackdawg,

Georgia shared the 1942 National Championship with Ohio State, as both teams were picked # 1 in 6 polls. The thing you should also know is Georgia was ranked # 1 until we lost to Auburn and GT became # 1 and then we beat GT to finish the season and earned the right to go to the Rose Bowl where we then beat UCLA 9-0 who was ranked # 4. And so you know my information came from the NCAA’s Official Site: www.ncaa.org/champadmin/iapastchamps.html.

Now as for not counting 1943 and 1944 is because all of Georgia’s players left after the 1942 season and joined the Armed Forces to fight in WWII while Tech’s players took deferments and we fielded a scout/practice team both of those years. I hope this information puts to rest your doubts about our shared Mythical National Championship from 1942 and why the 1943 and 1944 blowout losses aren’t counted by our University’s Sports Information Department. Go Dawgs

I’m gald for CVG, although I think when SOS leaves next year, he will have to look for his 6th job in as many years.

We played Wisconsin a couple of times in the past 10 years and they were so gracious, outgoing and non-confrontational (not like my ex-father-in-law at all who lives in Lake Geneva Wis) that we didn’t know how to handle it. DirtyDawg , what game(s) all year long did we have receivers running wild in our defensive backfield?

By 82DAWG

December 26, 2007 8:25 AM | Link to this

AltamahaDawg I’m not DirtyDawg, but Troy does sort of come to mind. Their receivers may not have run wild, but they were certainly inspired by their openness and running room.

As for Hawai’i, I hope the Bulldogs realize that they had better be 100% ready to play this game because if they aren’t Hawai’i will pass them silly and score at will. If Martinez plays that conservative cover 2 zone or rushes three and puts 8 guys into coverage, he is in trouble. He HAS to pressure Brennen and put him in the turf. If he gives him time to throw, Martinez could have 23 guys in the secondary and it wouldn’t matter. The key to the game is putting pressure on him. Make him afraid to pass and then chuck and duck. If Martinez does that, we should be fine. Offensively, we have to move the chains and keep the defense off the field. Don’t turn the ball over and just let our talent take over.

UGA 38, Hawai’i 28.

Despite playing a less than formidable schedule … Hawaii is a great story. They’re David and we’re Goliath and we all know how that story ended for the giant. June Jones is a very good college coach and an even better person. Hell if they weren’t playing my Dawgs I’d even pull for ‘em. But they are and therefore I ain’t! But I’m also a bit worried that we might be too full of ourselves and take Hawaii too lightly. I surely hope not and would love nothing better than for our young men in red and black to take a “no prisoners” approach and really get after it. If Martinez can draw up a way to defend this offense, and make changes on the fly, it’ll go a long way toward getting the doubters (including myself at times) off his back. I like the idea of Georgia playing a “statement” game. Let’s let the world know how the BCS overlooked us by pounding the Warriors and putting them on notice that we’ll be back with more next season. Go Dawgs! GATA!

By ARdawg

Brennen is certainly a good QB with some excellent receivers. Don’t expect Hawaii to come out like TN or the Dawgs to come out like they did against TN. It won’t happen. As good as Brennen is he can’t throw it laying on his back. Hawaii won’t score 20.

Your Vols caught us at a weak moment and that loss was the catalyst to a fine season. It woke the Dawgs up. The only team left in the top 5 that Georgia might struggle with is USC which would have made a Rose Bowl trip all the more exciting but, now we’ll never know.

To set the record straight, Georgia has five national championships, depending on which poll you recognize. In 1942, the AP declared the national champion at the end of the year, and prior to a bow. They awarded the national championship to Ohio State who like Georgia was undefeated. They both were offered a Rose Bowl berth and Ohio STate declined to play Georgia. Georgia beat UCLA and was later declared national champion by the Harris Poll, which in 1942 carried more clout than the AP.

Georgia should win this one. As good as Hawaii’s QB is, I think he will be running for dear life the whole game.

The Warriors are a good team and have a great fan base, but they haven’t played a team like UGA before. We have played many teams with the same offensive strategy as UH and beat most if not all of them.

My prediction is 45-10, UGA all the way.

Just read in today’s AJC where Tebow and Hawaii’s Brennen talked during the Heisman awards. According to the article, Tebow said that UGA’s defense was fast and physical and the one that gave him the most problems.

Interesting perspective, especially in light of the many bloggers who were calling for Martinez’s head.
