A season to savor
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I really wasn’t surprised when I went to the ajc.com home page Saturday night and saw the downer headline “No Dome for the Dawgs.” That’s just how sports coverage in this town goes. Remember back after the South Carolina game when we were provided five reasons the Jackets were on the rise along with five reasons the UGA football program was sinking?
OK, so Georgia isn’t in the SEC championship this year because the loss to Tennessee gave the Vols the tie-breaker over the SEC East co-champion Bulldogs. No, instead, the Dawgs are ranked No. 4 in the country, AHEAD of both LSU and UT, the teams that will be battling it out in the Dome. And this a mere seven weeks after Georgia was given up for dead by most sports pundits, and many fans were lamenting the prospect of a “lost” season and a date in the Music City Bowl at best.
The fact that Mark Richt’s team managed to turn it around after the Dawgs’ inexplicable showing in Knoxville and win six straight, three over ranked teams (including Florida and Auburn), makes for one of this season’s Cinderella stories in college football. The Bulldogs may not be playing for the SEC crown, but this season has been easily Richt’s best coaching job in his seven years in Athens. He found a way to change course and his players’ mindset by making them believe in themselves again and rediscover the fun of playing football.
As Georgia awaits a BCS bowl appointment (wouldn’t the Rose be so cool?), the underclassmen can look ahead to next season’s much tougher schedule (picking up Arizona State and LSU) with a renewed confidence that hopefully will pay even bigger dividends down the road.
No need for what-ifs, as in “what if the Dawgs hadn’t dropped those passes against the Gamecocks and had won that game like they should have?” Yeah, Georgia probably would be in line for the national championship game even with the loss to Tennessee, thanks to what a screwy year it’s been in the college rankings. Dwelling on that stuff is unnecessary, though. What UGA accomplished this season is unbelievable enough to merit the inevitable DVD retrospective.
But, of course, that wasn’t the sweetest part of Saturday afternoon. Humbling the smack-talking boys in gold from the North Avenue Trade School for the seventh consecutive year was what most Georgia fans were primarily focused on, not what was happening in Lexington between Kentucky and the Vols, and the Dawgs delivered. Sure, they made it a little more exciting than it needed to be early on thanks to a lack of focus in special teams play, but the team’s remarkable balance paid off in the end. The Jackets held Knowshon Moreno in check but couldn’t handle Thomas Brown, Matthew Stafford, Mohamed Massaquoi and Sean Bailey. And motormouth Tashard Choice got his yards like usual, but not enough points. And so the Dawgs ended up dancing at Grant Field as the Redcoats did their version of Soulja Boy.
Vintage Bulldogs-Jackets, in other words.
Like the headline said, no Dome for the Dawgs this year. But keeping the Governor’s Cup and making the Top 5 and the BCS is a pretty great “consolation” prize.
MORE THOUGHTS ON THE GAME: The way the Jackets were crowding the line Saturday worked against a shifty runner like Moreno and in favor of a slasher like Brown, who hits the hole a lot faster. A classic example of the wisdom of having at least a couple of running backs with differing styles. … Moreno’s best play Saturday wasn’t a run but stripping the ball from the Jackets’ Morgan Burnett on that blown lateral, resulting in one of the game’s three touchbacks for Georgia instead of a touchdown for the insects. … Stafford’s own 31-yard touchdown run on the same play that burned Kentucky (guess the Jackets didn’t watch the film closely enough) fit right in with the way Georgia’s offense was evenly split between the run and the pass. While Stafford was off-target several times in the first half, he got his game going in the second half, threading the needle on several remarkable throws. Stafford definitely seems to throw the ball better on play-action passes than when he drops back. … Georgia’s receivers were making some great catches, too. Besides the aforementioned Massaquoi and Bailey, Kris Durham managed to use all of his height to go up and snag one high ball. … Interesting to see Richt dancing around on the sideline to keep from getting an ice bath in the chilly weather. Willie Martinez got it instead. His defense had a good day Saturday but, as usual, it could have been even better. Just about every time the Dawgs pressured a Jackets QB the result was just what Georgia wanted. Which made me wonder why our defenders sometimes sat back and let them have all the time they needed to find a receiver. … Jackets fans can gripe all they want about that pass interference call Saturday, but the Dawgs drew plenty of flags from the SEC (natch) refs, including several for holding, while Jackets players were getting away with numerous blatant holds. A typically inconsistent day for an SEC officiating crew. … All that blitzing by the Jackets and only one sack to show for it. The young Georgia line has really grown up fast this season. Meanwhile, the Dawgs had five sacks, two by Geno Atkins. … It’s understandable that some Jackets fans were singing “Rocky Top” Saturday. After all, some Georgia fans were chanting for the Kentucky Wildcats. But there were some in the Tech student section who went so far as to wear Tennessee jerseys. I’ll admit to always rooting against the Jackets, but putting on another team’s colors? That’s pretty pathetic.

The only thing TECH has going for them is to root for other teams to beat the DAWGS! Because they know that they can’t!
Let wear the other teams colors, it only makes look that much more foolish and NERDY!!

The Tech band, dressed in their 50s style hospital orderly uniforms really put on a show. A small group of them showed up among the Georgia crowd waiting for the team busses. They did a brief rendition of Ramblin’ Wreck and scurried off. During the 3rd quarter they snuck up behind the Georgia band and did the same. The last 3 or 4 nerds to run away left with their middle fingers in the air in a salute to the UGA band and fans. Just bragging on their IQs I guess. And they get on these blogs and criticize UGA for an excessive celebration and sideline dancing. And by the way, Tech students like Ron Paul for president.

Thank you for Thomas Brown. Thank you for Matt Stafford. Thank you for Knowshon Moreno. Thank you for big tough lineman and fleet footed defenders. Thank you for Coach Richt and Coach Bobo. And yes, thank you for Coach Martinez. Congratulations Tennessee on your hard fought victory and your opportunity to play for the true national championship. Thank you Kentucky for a hard fought effort. Congratulations to our cousins on the plain for making St. Nick’s off season a little less pleasant. Congratulations to Florida for a season ending victory over their ACC rival and your invitation to a second tier bowl. Shame on you ‘cocks for spoiling the triad state championship and losing to an ACC foe. Not sure 6-6 should even get a bowl invite. Grave yard of coaches. Just the place for Darth Visor to ride off into the sunset. Maybe Lou Holtz job will be open next fall. As for the insects on North Ave. Choice is a good back, but you guys need to find a quarterback and some receivers who can catch. Don’t know if you can afford to fire your coach right now. Can you say frozen tundra bowl?
DAWGS smell ROSEY!!! Can’t wait for 2008. What glory awaits? And 2009? It’s gonna be fine. Go DAWGS!!!

Bill, pathetic is the best description of Bug fans. Haven’t you paid attention to the blogs?
They change their handles and pretend to be fans of other teams. I bet that over 50% of the Hillbilly fans on the Schultz blog the last day have been Bugs in disguise.
It’s bad enough that their yearly highlight is dressing like Klinkons at DragonCon, but they have to resort to rooting for other teams and pretending to be fans of other teams that Georgia plays because they can’t back up their own smack talk.

Bill, I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about Mr. Sunglasses who was giving away something at least every fifteen minutes last night. Boy, what an annoying contrivance designed to get Tech fans to come to the games. By the way, just out of curiosity, maybe Mr. Bisher or another historian could answer this question: Which came first - The Nerds yelling “to H-ll with Georgia”, or Dawgs singing “… to H-ll with Georgia Tech?” And finally, Congratulations to Coach Richt and our Team for a wonderful season so far! Let’s hope to wrap it up in style with a victory either in Tempe, Miami, or Pasadena!

Stuck in Jax, wish I could have enjoyed the beat down in person. Tech folks have always been far more obnoxious, remember the coving of the G in Sanford some years back. But I have to side with them on Ron Paul… read about him and Libertarians and see if you don’t too!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but here is my take: Going to the Rose Bowl would of its’ self would be an honor, but I don’t want any part of SC. They have a good qb and tall, good rx to match with out small cbs. AND, if we beat them, it won’t help us a bit in the ranking. Of course the same can be said of our opponents in the Fiesta and Orange, but we can beat those teams. I have my doubts that we can beat SC. I guess we take what we get and be happy, but I’ll take the Orange or Fiesta.

Bill,
Even Mr Boggs was able to put up a blog before you, and he usually takes a week. Were you stuck in line at the Varsity getting thirds on onion rings and chili dogs?
Onto a more seious topic:
We are number 4 in the nation for a reason, b/c the voters realize how good the Bulldogs are becoming and have become, especially in comparison with the beginning of the year. I had lost hope after Tenn, and thought we would take maybe 2 out 4 against our remaining opponents down the stretch, but the Bulldogs have renewed my confidence in them insurrmountably. I’m glad that we finished the drill.
On another note: The announcers claimed Moreno was upset b/c he was taken out of the game, when Brown scored on the following run. I think they misread his emotion. He was upset by his own play, and was hungry to make a big play. I think the two backs have great respect for each other.
It’s great to be a Ga bulldog

I have to disagree with some of your statements. Yes USC looks dang good, and are on a streak of their own. They have talented, big players. But if we beat them, we will ride a wave of confidence like no other into 2008, and we will get respect of the voters, which is a big deal. Let’s take on the toughest opponent we can, and prove that we’re ready for the big time.

The Rose would be awesome!! Out here in Pac 10 country, I get to see plenty of USC/ASU/OREGON/etc.. they are very good teams and it would be an honor to play them in a Bowl Game. Having said that, we can play with any of them—our speed on D and skill players can match up with any team in the Pac 10—UGA vs USC would be the best bowl game. West Va will abuse anyone they play—if they play a Big 12 team they will beat them by 30. CONGRATS DAWGS!!!

I am only one in the Dawg Nation who is proud of our team, our coaches, the players who had tough injuries but stayed with the team (Lumpkin), and the fans. It has been a real effort that really started at the end of last year, saw endless nights of recruiting, hard work on the part of the entire team & staff, and has resulted in a year to really be proud of. It really is great to be a Georgia Bulldog. Now, let’s finish the drill and show the rest of the country how tough the SEC is in our bowl game. Go Dawgs!

SEC v. ACC - 2007 Results
Univ. of SC beat Univ. of NC LSU beat Virginia Tech Florida beat Florida State Georgia beat Georgia Tech four wins for SEC
Florida State beat Alabama Clemson beat South Carolina Wake Forest beat Vanderbilt three wins for ACC
Record in 2007: 4 to 3 in favor of the SEC. Total points: SEC - 197 v. ACC - 126.

Take your pick Dawg fans, do you want Roses, Oranges or chips and salsa at the Fiesta. Some of you are upset not to play LSU for the SECC. We lost that right on the checkerboard in Knoxbillyvile. But quit complaining, we got a great bowl in front of us and if we stomp em, we get a great pre-season spot in the polls next year. C’mon fans, we are much better than even the most optimistic Dawg fan would have said after the Vol game.

Congratulations Dawgs on closing out in great fashion and pinning #7 on the hated Jackets. Coach Richt and his assistants deserve a lot of credit for salvaging the season after the terrible half at UT. You deserve all the credit and GREAT JOB!
Honest respect to all the Jackets who played their hearts out last night with the exception of the couple of players trying to cause injuries at the end. Your fans should be proud of your effort but don’t seem to support you.
Ga Tech, whatever your problems may be financially or with other support, PLEASE change all the nerdy promotions you do during timeouts. You probably have to do it to fill the seats for your other games, but you do not need to do it for the Georgia game. It hurts your concentration and your momentum. Those things are a little more appropriate at pro games, but never at college games. Spend the timeouts getting your team psyched or playing your band, etc. GEORGIA ARE YOU LISTENING AS WELL, because at crucial times in Sanford, we honor someone or acknowledge things that should be done pre-game or only at half-time. Thank God we don’t do the kinds of things I witnessed yesterday at Grant Field, but we could do less as well.
Where we go bowling will be interesting, but I think we will travel well. I hope we get the best opponent to get that exposure. This team doesn’t want to duck anyone.
Hopefully the SEC will represent itself well. No whining because we had our chance and blew it. UT and LSU deserve to play for the championship. However, in my opinion only, the current two best teams in the SEC are Georgia and Florida.
GO DAWGS!!

Dawgs - My first and probably last appearance on your blog. I’m on the “other side” of the fence. Just wanted to give you a deserved tip of the cap.
Surrounded by your faithful denziens down at Bobby Dodd yesterday.
Great football atmosphere. Game did not disappoint (other than the result for my side…obviously..)
Seen a lot of fan bases come into and out of Bobby Dodd wearing other colors (as you know)—Clemson, VA Tech, Notre Dame, Miami—to name a few. Your side yesterday was near the top of the shelf in that regard.
A decent, well-behaved, spirited bunch you are. No “rotten apples” in the barrel. Had fun. Traded a few good laughs during the game. Happened to be right above the Redcoat Band. Real good band. Entertaining, spirited, and well-attired…You should be proud.
Your team was better and we didn’t get the break we needed to turn the tide. That’s football. Could have been real interesting if Burnett gets in there with the fumble. Your guy made a great “heads up” play to punch it out. Great football play and great hustle…a game ball type of play.
Have fun in Pasadena or “Nawlins” or wherever.
See you again in 364 days in your place. I’m pretty sure we’ll still have a few guys on scholarship to make the bus ride over and dress out.

What is really sad about the Nerd Heard is the lack of filling their High School stadium. Forgive me Dawg folks, but I married a gator. She was amazed at the fact that every time they showed a view of the stadium from the blimp you mostly saw RED. She asked me if I was sure that it was not a home game.

Paul, obviously anyone calling for the firing of Coach Richt was just either a rival hiding behind a, oh so clever, “dogfan” mask, or a totally unrealistic lunatic. But thier were very many serious fans in here that actaully called the coaching staff’s belief that we needed more than one freshman running back to be successful this year “stupid” and “blind loyalty”. I’ve noticed that sort of faded. No need to even acknowledge the obvious absence of the fire Willie Martinez crowd now.

3volpaul, Congrats! You guys have a great chance Saturday against a dispirited LSU team. Thanks for the great football game this weekend. Couldn’t showcase the SEC any better with your game and LSU/Arkansas game.
Bill, who calls Tech’s games? I had to listen on the internet and that was the only pick-up I could get. I thought these guys were former referee’s by the way they called the game. Almost had to dial 911 for a waaambulance they were whining so much. Typically when listening to a game on the radio you can tell how well the home team is doing. Listening to this broadcast I could tell how well the dawgs were doing.
Had the crap scared out of me Saturday night. On HDTV it appeared that Kansas coach Mangino was coming after my sandwich. After taking off for the door I figured out he was just calling a timeout.
Don’t care which BCS bowl we play in. Bring on USC. If we want ot be #1 we have to play like it 110% of the time. You know that OSU, UF, USC will be in that #1 spot starting next year. We can be top 5 if we do well against a quality team.

Tech will always be Tech, with all the whining, finger-pointing, shifting of blame, and then the infuriating once-a-decade great game that makes you keep hating them. In a way I am glad that none of the scenarios bantered around on this blog last week for UGA to play in the BCS championship game came true. You really should win your conference if you are going to lay a legitimate claim to the Big Championship. Not that this team isn’t good enough to win it, they are. I have been a Dog fan all my life and this is perhaps the most complete, well balanced team I have seen. I want to play the highest ranked, furthest out of the southeast team that is available in our bowl game to help set us up with the poll voters for next year. The biggest losers at Tech are not on the field: they are in the stands. The biggest cheer of the game was not for the team’s two TDs or field goal: it was when the final score of the TN-KY game was announced. Throughout the game, the Tech fans cursed, screamed, whined, and threatened the Dawgs fans when we cheered our team. Then, walking to the car after the game one sorry Frat House was blasting Rocky Top and cheering the Vols. In defense of Coach Chan, I don’t think he’s a bad coach. His team was in the game for a while on Saturday; it’s just that NO ONE is going to be able to sustain anything approaching excellence (even consistent competitiveness?) on the Flats. GT has turned into a complete joke. It’s their own fault and the fault of their beloved legendary Bobby Dodd for his short-sighted egress from the SEC to be the “Notre Dame of the South.” Oh well, this year it appears to have worked; however even GT is better than ND now.

Missouri?!?!?!
Who have they played that is worth a flip?! I thought that strength of schedule was a factor in today’s BCS.
I know that the dawgs tanked at UT and lost a game against Spurrier that they shouldn’t have, but come one! The best team in college football over the last 7 weeks is UGA!
If I rank the best teams in the nation TODAY, not 3 months ago or even 2 months ago, they are:
1 - Georgia 2 - Southern Cal 3 - Florida 4 - West VA 5 - Ohio State
I guess logic isn’t part of the BCS equation. This is ridiculous!
Another thing, if UT beats LSU (which could happen) then they are two 3 loss teams that played for the SEC championship as opposed to a better 2 loss UGA team playing for the SEC crown!!!
Let’s face it, LSU has barely won by the skin of their teeth against the really good match-ups (FL, AL, AU) and lost two of them. Anyone that thinks they are the big powerhouse that the national media thought them to be is smoking something after Friday.
I can take the medicine on the SEC part, those two losses were our fault and can’t be blamed (or acredited) to S. Carolina or UT. However, if this season isn’t a testament to why we should have a playoff system at the top of the BCS, then I don’t know what is. You take the top four teams and run them off (1 vs. 4 & 2 vs. 3) then the winners go to the championship game. Better yet, take the top eight teams and make a three week series out of it. He11, finals are over in plenty of time to have three weeks worth of great college football playoffs for three weeks at the end/beginning of the year. Even better than that, have a play-in game for the 8th position between the #8 and #9 teams in the country.
The issue, and everyone knows it, is that these bowl games have been committed to the sponsers as National Championship, SEC #1 vs. BCS, etc. These committments have already been baked for years to come and that is the reason why no one can fix the problems and convert us to a playoff system. There has to be someone out there with the power and the authority to make this happen. It is utterly sad that the commentary on sports radio (where they are completely honest) is that the system is broke and nobody likes it.
Can someone please take control and get this fixed???

SOS needs to quit shifting blame to his players and assistant coaches for sure (“I’ll be watching the defense this week”) and remember where the buck stops.

Dawgbyte - you’re an imposter.
Don’t want any part of SC? Are you kidding me? DawgByte would like nothing better than a shot at the Trojans. Lets play a top notch Western team and the consensus with writers right now is SC is hot. Lets line’em up and see who’s the best.

Georgia has played the best the SEC has to offer. FL, AU, TN and LSU. Well maybe not LSU but like I’ve been saying on these blogs LSU isn’t even the best in the conference much less the nation. But none of that matters now. What does matter is where we play a bowl game. I say hello Rose and bring on USC. A statement needs to be made for the Pac 10 world in Pasadena. The SEC is that tough. If you don’t believe the Dawgs can beat USC you are not only cheering the wrong team but the wrong conference. The Dawgs can beat anyone in the nation. I regret we lose out on the SECCG and LSU but thats just the way it is and rightfully so.

I wish I could have been there or have a Tech fan threaten me, I have never had any of the nerdy bees say anything to me, of course I am twice there size and they probably calculated the odds on that. Tech knows they have no other choice but to use other teams to try and say something about ours, becuase thier program is sorry.

This may not be the topic of the day, but it is something definitely to think about. I told some friends of mine last week that UGA is so mgood that the win last against Ga Tech will move them up in the Polls as high as number 4 in the BCS. Well it happened this week. Here is my next prediction. With No 1 Missouri playing No 9 Oklahoma this comming Saturday for the Big 12 Championship and WVU Playing Pittsburgh for the Big East Title and both WVU and Missour by chance loses? No 3 Ohio State will move to No 1 and Georgia will move to No 2 in the BCS and will plkay each other for the National Title. What do you think?

Being ranked #4 results from hard work…
Beating Tech again because of superior athletes worth the two-a-days…
Reading this below… Priceless…
Mark Richt took over at Georgia in 2001 and quickly turned things around, handing O’Leary a loss in his final game at Georgia Tech. While the Bulldogs quickly rose to prominence, winning two Southeastern Conference titles and putting themselves in position for a major bowl this season, the Yellow Jackets languished in mediocrity.
Get a coach Techies and while you are at it get some able football players !!!
Go Dawgs !!!

I guess the FANS OF CHAN can now concentrate on Jackie instead of Gailey. I cannot believe that Tech, the noble and classy school would sacrifice such a coaching genuis on the altar of beating the Dawgs. Oh CHAN, we hardly knew ya. I will seclude myself for the next few days as I sink into melancholy for CHAN. Where will the visitation be held, I vote for the Cheetah. Maybe someone there can console the FANS OF CHAN.

Bill you are a classless, worthless human being. I guess you fit right in with the rest of the Georgia faithful. I hope you don’t have any children. God knows that’s what we need someone like you contaminating the gene pool. And if you do, please have them neutered so you’re family name will cease to exist.

I saved the email I sent prior to the season where I predicted 2 losses. I didn’t think the losses would be the ones they turned out to be, but we are exactly where I thought we would be. Excellent season, with greater things to come over the next few seasons. We’re definitely in it for the long haul.

I figured if we go to the SEC Championship, thats cool, but if we don’t, thats cool, too. The way this season has gone in college football, nothing surprises me. I will gladly trade a spot in Atlanta for a shot at a BCS bowl. The hillbillies can have it. I hope that they come back down here to Florida this year, so if any of them runs their mouth like they did last year, I can tell them like I did before to go outside and play hide and go F* themselves!
Go Dawgs! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!

I’d like to apologize to South Carolina fans. I took millions of dollars to be the savior here in Columbia, and all I’ve done is maintain a consistent level of mediocrity that was established long before I arrived. If my name wasn’t Steve Orr Spurrier, the HBC, I’d probably enter ‘08 officially on the “hot seat.” Man, I better start winning before these folks remember how badly they use to hate my guts.
I’d also like to apologize to my players and assistant coaches for insinuating that they were the reason for our recent 5-game slide into oblivion. I’m an arrogant SOB, and Lord knows I take all of the credit when we win. So as much as it hurts to say so, let me acknowledge that I might be partly responsible for the way things turned out this season. After rightly assigning the bulk of the blame to Blake Mitchell, his backup, my assistant coaches, the defense, special teams, our fans, and the entire South Carolina athletic department, you have to figure that I am at least 1% responsible for our 6-6 record (OK, maybe only 0.5%, but I’m eatin’ crow here so bear with me). After all, I am the Head Ball Coach…
Gotta go. I have some time to kill before signing day and my goal is to play a round of golf a day until then. One place I won’t be is in front of a television set when Georgia plays in their BCS bowl. Ponte Vedra, here I come!

How’s it going, Steve? I heard you’ve been hanging out of the AJC Blogs. Man, tough times for us high-dollar HBCs, huh? You think you have it bad? At least you’re at South Carolina. Try going 6-6 here at Alabama. Going 6-6 and losing to Auburn is what got the last guy fired. And they didn’t even have to pay him that much…
Gotta go. Someone just threw a brick through my living room window. It looks just like last week’s projectile, only this has the Auburn score painted on it in what appears to be blood. And I thought they took football seriously at LSU! Sheesh…
Maybe Mark Richt can use a couple of old warhorses like us to run his offense and defense at Georgia after his top assistants get head coaching jobs. Yeah, I know you regard Georgia as one step below Al Qaeda on the friends scale, but hey, work is work.
Later Dude.

This game was way closer than it seemed what with TECH dropping a sure 7 right of the bat. Talking about shooting yourself in the foot. Then there was those fumbles on the punts and the lateral that the TECH guy fumbled out of the endzone. Boy I sure wouldn’t want to be that guy, if he lives to be a hundred people will remind him of that.

Steve, Nick:
For the love of Mary, stop your belly aching. 6-6? Sounds good to me. Try being one of the top 3 most hyped coaches in America (guess who the other two are, he he) and going 3-9…at Notre Dame! You think you have it bad - ever been flipped off by a nun? It’s happened to me twice this month. When I confronted the last one (sister Agnes, 85 years old and spry as ever), she said “At least Gerry Faust never lost to +@#$&*^ Navy, you sorry piece of $&!#).
And I thought they took football seriously in the NFL. Sheesh. C-Ya.

Steve, Nick, Charlie:
You guys think you have it bad? Try “changing the culture” at a place like Nebraska, from excellence to shocking mediocrity. I had a 10-second meeting with Tom Osborne on Saturday. He told me have my office cleared out in one hour. It was humiliating. Osborne had a big, ferocious-looking security guard named Lawrence Phillips stand in the door while I packed up. I think he is a recent parolee or something…
When comes to the football culture, at least Steve is maintaining the status quo at South Carolina. Sort of. Before Charlie is done at Notre Dame, they may actually long for the days of Gerry Faust. Here’s a hint: you have to play a little defense to play with the big boys. Boy, did I find that out the hard way! Unless you happen to be Navy playing against Charlie’s ND team, that is. He He. (Sorry Charlie, I couldn’t resist. Your ego needs to be knocked down a peg or two. Steve and Nick are lost causes in that regard).
Nebraska may have canned me, but I’m set for life. I’m hanging out the “Gone Fishin’” signs now. The wife and I are going to make an offer for a getaway on Lake Lanier. Coach Tubbs and I are going to be fishing buddies, although I doubt I’ll see much of him during the fall. Next time I see him, I might drop a few hints about prior experience coaching QBs…But I digress.
Later, Gents. See you guys on the ESPN commentator circuit in about a year or so.

Let’s say Missouri and West Virginia lose and LSU wins the SEC title game. Wouldn’t LSU move up ahead of us? Or would we remain ahead of them with our stronger strength of schedule? I would think winning the SEC would go a long way in the rankings, but I also know that Georgia is the stronger team at the end of the season.

The only reason you UGA “puds” have anything to talk about at all is because Oklahoma’s quarterback got knocked out of the game in the first quarter against Texas A&M ten days ago. Otherwise, you would be thankful you even had something to talk about bybeating the GA Tech “knats”!

In a recent Mark Bradley column some blogger attributed UGA’s success to some high power. Let’s be clear, our success (and any failure) is due solely to the hard work and preparation of CMR, our coaches and athletes. If a high power is inferred or results are seen otherwise, then this is purely a placebo effect and means nothing. CMR is having a great year because he is a smart coach and understands our opponents. It is a discredit to him and our athletes to give credit where it is not due.
I hope the Dawgs get in the Rose Bowl so I can go see them beat up on USC or whoever the PAC-10 throws at us.

Gents, Ive been a long time reader on the UGA blogs but never have left any comments except the occasional one-liner. I remember reading a year or so ago, frequently seeing a poster by the name of “Buck in the NW”. I always enjoyed his posts, as I do the majority of yours (Cuz, Nascardawg, AltamahaDawg, etc to name a few) but the recent posts about him having died (if I am reading that correctly) are a little disheartening. He seemed like a good man, a fine dawg-fan. So, basically, I’d like to know a little more about him… if anyone could oblige… Thanks and let me just add, I don’t think that the NC is realistic for us this year (doesn’t mean I’m not pulling for OK and Pitt, just don’t think its plausible) but I think if we get USC and win the Rose we would be the preseason #1 next season. That is what I am hoping for… BRING ON THE TROJANS!!
