Winning the old-school way

An oft-quoted football truism has it that if you turn the ball over a lot (like four times) in a game, you can’t win. But that bit of conventional wisdom was trumped Saturday by another football truism.

Prolific offenses are great, but defense wins in the SEC.

The single most glaring statistic coming out of the Bulldogs’ win over the Kentucky Wildcats was this: Georgia gave Kentucky the ball twice on fumbles and twice on interceptions, but the Cats couldn’t garner more than three points out of those opportunities.

Most folks expected the Georgia-Kentucky game to be a high-scoring offensive shootout, but the Dawgs won Saturday the old-fashioned UGA way: Defense, special teams and the running game.

Two of those three aspects of Georgia’s game had been suspect over the past couple of seasons, but they got the job done against Kentucky. The Dawgs’ D still isn’t consistent enough to be one of those intimidating shut-em-down defenses. Georgia did shut down Kentucky’s running game but, frankly, they didn’t pressure QB Andre Woodson enough Saturday and still tended to play soft in the secondary, allowing the Cats to wrack up way too many passing yards. Which was frustrating for the fans at Sanford Stadium, because when the Dawgs DID pressure Woodson, it generally worked: five sacks and quite a few overthrown balls.

But the bottom line is that all those passing yards translated to only 13 points and, more importantly, the Georgia defense didn’t let the mistakes by the Bulldog offense throw the game away. And the Dawgs held what had been the nation’s 14th-ranked scoring offense to its season low and nearly 25 points below its season average.

Game ball to Willie Martinez and the defensive Dawgs.

As for the offense, fine running by Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown made up for the offensive line’s erratic blocking and QB Matthew Stafford and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo both having off days. Stafford, who often threw in a hurry or off his heels, was just a bit off-target most of the game, making his receivers work for it on even simple, short throws by tending to put the ball slightly behind them.

And probably because of their success with it in the previous three games, Bobo and Stafford seemed to have fallen in love with the homerun ball, repeatedly going long with low-percentage throws against an excellent Kentucky secondary when a nice over-the-middle to the tight end or dump pass to a back to secure a first down would have sufficed. At times Saturday when Georgia was trailing by 10 points, Bobo and Stafford looked impatient, like they wanted to get the Dawgs back on top with a big play instead of grinding it out.

Georgia ended up not completing a pass play over 17 yards. But thanks to the running game and the defense, along with Kelin Johnson’s blocked punt and Brandon Coutu’s 28th field goal out of 31 attempts at Sanford Stadium in his career, Georgia still was able to put Kentucky away and claim a share of the SEC East title.

Quite a turnaround from six weeks earlier when the Music City Bowl loomed after that pasting by Tennesee.

As for those two losses, there’s not much you can say about the Knoxville game. Georgia just didn’t show up that day. But after the past four games, more than one Georgia fan was seen shaking their heads and muttering something like, “How did this team ever lose to South Carolina?”

Dropped passes and a young team maturing as the season progressed is the answer.

If they played again today, what do you think the chances are Steve “It’s Not Like They’re Some Powerful Team” Spurrier’s fading Gamecocks would win again? Unfortunately, you don’t get mulligans in college football.

So we’re left rooting for Kentucky next week. Which, to be honest, most Georgia fans probably would be doing anyway. But even if UT wins out and goes to Atlanta, Mark Richt’s improbable rescue operation with this year’s Bulldogs has been remarkable and produced some memories for the ages.

Now, on to Historic Grant Field!

POOCH KICKS: Despite the fact that Georgia didn’t really push Richt’s offhand idea for a “redout” by fans Saturday, the stands did look a bit more ablaze in red than usual. … They did a countdown of the season’s Top 10 plays so far on the big video screen Saturday. The No. 1 “play”? The Dawgs hurtling through the “G” banner wearing those black jerseys last week. … Moreno’s second-effort continued to pay off Saturday, and Brown had several really nice slicing runs. But the run many of us got the biggest kick out of was Stafford lumbering 10 yards for a TD. He actually put a move on a Kentucky defender and juked him! … The Sanford crowd wasn’t quite as raucous as the week before against Auburn, but it stayed into the game and definitely was a factor, as Kentucky coach Rich Brooks noted when he said, “It’s harder on the road to get of a snap with all the noice. We didn’t do well with the noise factor.”

The “D” won it for us and I hope CWM got a game ball. Would I have preferred to see him/them “send” a little more pressure, at times? Yes. But, they did the job, so quit your beechin!

I recognize that Georgia is kicking some butt this year and is maybe playing like one of the best teams in the nation right now, but I have a hard time respecting a team that lost to my sucky South Carolina team. Like Cocky in the Capital One commericials, we’ve laid some big eggs this season. Folks around here are going to tire of my swaggerin’ a_ _ routine pretty quickly if I don’t start delivering wins. Especially those who recall how I used to rub it in when I was the Florida coach.

Nick Saban, if you’re out there and need someone to talk to, give me a call. I feel your pain, bro. I got my Vandy, and you got your La.-Monroe. Least mine was a conference opponent, hee hee. Dang, I still can’t help myself…

What about Munson getting the jacket? A great gesture for a great broadcaster.

The two biggest feelings I had while sitting in those stands were (a) that we had zero momentum and no rhythm at all, and (b) that I knew we would come back in the second half - and that is a BIG shift from the first four games.

A big thumbs down to the normally great PA people, who played that Soulja Boy song when we were losing by 10 points in the first half and then not once in the second half when we were winning. That dog and pony show was good when it was spontaneous, but it is pretty tired now.

Georgia is playing as well as any team in college football right now.

I noticed 2 of the 32 new Rhodes scholars announced this morning are from UGA.

Anybody know how many from Tech were named? Obviously with the vastly superior education they brag about constantly they must have gotten at least a half dozen or more. Anybody know the actual number?

Wow, Dawgbyte… looks like I’m not the only one who uses facts and logic to articulate his case against Willie Martinez as an inconsistant DC who gets burned because of his love of soft zones and refusal to bring constant pressure, or at least, well-timed pressure.

See, logic. Logic always wins. But you keep on attacking the messenger because you cannot assail their logic.

Hey Bugs, I just found out that there is something in my cubbard that is better than Raid at repelling and destroying bugs. It’s called Special K. Stand by to recieve about 150 yards worth of Special K on Saturday.

I’ve always said John Tenuta’s genius is a result of him bringing consistant pressure against college offenses which favor the pass. But against teams which run the ball exceptionaly, his genius tends to disapear. Well, after Saturday, when your Bugs give up over 250 yards rushing to Special K and T Brown, you’ll be wanting to run Tenuta out of town on that same rail y’all have thrown the great and wonderful Chan Gailey (brought to you by the newest member of the FOC).

I can’t wait!

Everyone needs to get over their personal bias against Coach Martinez. The job of the defense is to keep the team in the game giving the offense a chance to win it. In the Mark Richt era, there have only been 2 games where our defense has not given our team a chance to win the ballgame. LSU in ‘03 and UT this year. The defense was a top 10 defense last year and it has more than held up this year with no dominant player on the D. So please get over your personal bias against members of the coaching staff.

Not a great game play wise.Way too many turnovers. But we will take the win and pray for Kentucky to finally lay the Vols to rest. That old blue tick hound has more lives then that Peterson fellow has ex wives.

Tenn. right now has to be one of the luckiest damn teams in the country, and yes I picked them to win the east but hell I am known for picking like crap, ask anyone at Mandalay Bay they will tell you.

Dawgs win big one week…Dawgs win ugly the next.As long as they win I love it.

Now on to the train wreck known as Tech. I want to put an old ball coach move on them.Run it up. Grind their butts into the ground.Run Moreno so many times that they beg for us to throw a pass. Then throw so many passes that they just beg for the end of the game so they can get ready for Putnam investment bowl, or Post Cereal Bowl, or whatever lame a* Bowl game they get invited to.

Go Dawgs! And to hell with Ga Tech!

I was there yesterday and I noticed the defense come alive in the second quarter- I told my buddy that we would shut them out for the rest of the game. I was almost right- 3 points in the last 53 minutes of the game…. EXCELLENT job, D…

Go Cats, please beat the Vols !

Michael G, it isn’t bias. It’s an issue of consistancy. The defense under Martinez has been inconsistant. The defense under Martinez has given up 30 or more points 7 times.

Under Van Gorder, they only did so 1 time!

I don’t care what the numbers say. The numbers last year said VaTech had the best defense in the nation. Were those numbers correct? Heck no! Once again, the defenses under Martinez have been inconsistant and even more shocking, there have been games where fundamentals have been absolutely horrendous (tackling, overpursuit, etc.). That kind of stuff was never an issue under Van Gorder.

It isn’t bias.

It’s cold hard fact.

It’s cold, dispassionate logic.

You can’t argue with that.

Georgia had 4 turnovers against Kentucky’s 1, had less than 300 yards of total offense and only 99 passing, looked a little lethargic and distracted for most of the first half…yet still beat a dangerous top-25 team by 11 points after outscoring them 24-3 down the stretch. This team is good. I hope we get a shot at LSU.

The fumble by Knowshon on the first series seemed to take a little fire out of the offense but they got it back the end of the second quarter and maintained it the rest of the way. The D gave up some yards but not the points. Blitzing is fine but I can’t see doing it on every down. That would be a good way to get a third degree burn. I am not willing nor ready to throw Coach Willie under the team bus. I think he is as good as we are going to get right now and until someone shows me the DC that is going to come to Athens tommorrow and make the D better, then I am happy with CWM.

Nascar, you have at least been consistent from day one on your dislike of CWM’s coaching. Even after suffering the slings and arrows of others. I don’t agree with replacing CWM, but I respect your consistent opinion. I hope you had fun in downtown Athens last night, it must have been a ball. Sorry freudian slip.

Cuz, there were plenty of T&A to be had last night.

I mean fun. There was plenty of fun to be had last night!

And people need to stop equating logical criticism with a coach’s performance with like or dislike. Willie Martinez is a great guy. I like him. I do not believe his performance as the DC of this football team has been consistant and up to the level of where Van Gorder had placed the bar, however, and I have logic to back me up on that.

It has nothing to do with like or dislike. Just a dispassionate performance evaluation. No hysterics. No craziness.

Actually, I can argue with that. Va. Tech did have a top ranked defense last year. Because we came back and won against them doesn’t mean there defense is any less great. As far as our own D is concerned, they keep us in almost every game we play, giving us a chance to win. Saying that, I would like to see us get more turnovers on D, but i like knowing that going into every game our defense will keep us in it. Now if we can keep the offense from having 4 turnovers…

Nascarfan…I believe your “logical criticism” of Coach Martinez is wrong. Under both Van Gorder and Martinez regimes, the dog D had moments where we played bad for a series, a quarter or even a half. But only 2 times during both men’s stretches did our defense not give the team a chance to win the game. That was LSU in ‘03 and Tenn. this year. Van Gorder was a very good D coach for us (he is a pr*ck in person), but Coach Martinez has been very good for us as well.

I’ve been on Martinez as bad as anyone but this game is not the time. I still believe his basic philosophy is to “be careful” but I see signs that he is starting to learn. After Woodson had all day on his one TD pass the defense started to get after him. Curran is making the soft 2-deep scheme EVERY PLAY look a lot better and Dent at SAM is a big improvement too. Let’s not jinx ourselves by mouthing at the Techies too much this week. Wait til’ next week.

NASCARfan is pathetic Matt Cafaro. He doesn’t go to games-never has. Last year he tried to disguise himself as Bill a middle-aged guy who went to the games with his wife. Just pathetic stuff. He left the board for a while but recently the plauge is back. Please do not encourage him. if we are real, real quiet he may just go away again.

His use of the term “effing” is one of his syntax giveaways. A constant theme is his hatred of CWM, and his trying to start or propagate nicknames (special K is the latest).

Cafaro will respond with a terribly lame denial which is often more pathetic than the original post. The name has become a punchline among ajc staffers.

NASCARfan, don’t tell me you think the offense has been consistent. It hasn’t. Therefore, logically, we’d have to get rid of CMB (and CMR). Same logic: receivers drop passes; it’s the coaches’ fault. No dominant pass rusher; it’s the coaches’ fault. Probable fact: several top programs would hire CWM in a heartbeat. Your views are typically fact-based except for your dislike of CWM, contrary to your protestations otherwise. However, we can agree: Go Dawgs…and to hell with Tech!

The fact is you have been called out on several blogs because you are a loud-mouthed, no-nothing a*******hole. Now how is that for some 8th grade “logic”? And I have two degrees, one from UGA, and I gather that you are working on your first. Good luck, and when—and if—you are successful then you can call people morons with hope that someone will take you seriously. I don’t think I would, even then.

By NASCARfan

Borodawg, Martinez has had 3 years. Bobo has had one. There is logic in waiting to see where Bobo takes this.

As for the guy claiming to be AJC staff… if he were truly AJC staff, his name would be highlighted in bold blue.

As for saying effing, I say effing because it’s just slightly more acceptable than using the f-word. I didn’t know someone named Matt Cafaro has the patent on saying effing.

But I’ve been saying it as long as I’ve been posting here. And to the guy who claims I’m someone else while pretending to be AJC staff (I guess the irony of that situation is totaly lost on an idiot like him), dude, I’m a student at UGA. I have student tickets. Unfortunately, thanks to the greedy Michael Adams, I only have the four game package (SoCarolina, Whatever NoCarolina, Troy, and Kentucky). I had to spend hard-earned money I don’t really have on the other home games, including Okie State and the Blackout, in buying very expensive scalped tix.

But, I need to issue a huge apology to Dawgbyte. Dawgbyte, I had assumed that it was you that was going around last night and taking other people’s names and making all kinds of wild slurs agains them. It was obviously this guy who is pretending to be the AJC staff who took over my name last night and the name of War Eagle last week and the name of General Neyland last night.

This guy is a plague on our boards, and I’m sorry Dawgbyte for assuming it was you. This guy is trying to play us against each other, and it’s not cool.

And, he’s also wrong in another thing. I didn’t turn against Martinez until after the Tennessee game when I looked back at his years as the DC. You can go back and look at all of the discussions. I stood up for Martinez this year until after the Tennessee game. So how have I always been against him? Cuz knows. My friends Hunker Down and Altamaha know. I was taking up for Martinez right up until after the Tennessee game. So if this guy Matt Cafaro, whom I’ve never seen on this board (is it the guy who posts as Matthew?) has always been anti-Willie, how could that be me?

Explain that to the rest of us guy who claims to be AJC staff. Like you, who is obviously a liar and who’s been trying to destabilize our boards for weeks, has any kind of credibility.

And Dawgbyte, once again, I’m sorry for thinking it was you.

And yes, we’re cool.

Oh leave the krap alone, Nascar has kept it real in his critisisms(sic)of CWM, I don’t think it is justified in my opinion, but the guy does research. My thought is that even Erk let Virginia beat us 31-0 in 1979. Fire him? Hardly, Nascar calls them as he sees them. Let the man have his say, quit demeaning him for his opinion, whether you agree or disagree as I do. He is still a dawg fan and when we get to the point that a dawg cannot voice his opinion, then this blawg is toast. I am also fed up with you bunch of almighty genuises who cannot stand a differnce of opinion. Go talk that Joe Stalin krap somewhere else. This is a blawg where we let it all hang out. And leave the gay jokes and insinuations, otherwise, everyone of you I think are closet puffers. One person’s sexual prefernce or intimations thereof, have no place in an intelletual discourse. By NASCARfan

November 18, 2007 8:17 PM | Link to this

And if that was lame reasoning, I apologize. I’ve tried to be anything but lame.

But it’s an honest question. This guy who pretends to be me, War Eagle, General Neyland and probably others, claimes I’ve been anti-Willie all along. But there is proof in old blogs that I only joined that side after the Tennessee game.

So, someone is lying here. And you guys know me. Well, you guys know NASCARfan. Like most of you (Cuz, Altamaha, Dawgbyte, etc.), I don’t use my name, though I’ve told my first name in some blogs, to protect the innocent, namely me, from weirdos like this guy. I’ve blogged since the beginning of the season. This is the same guy who’s been writing some pretty horrible stuff the last couple of weeks by taking other people’s handles. That’s definately not cool.

So if that’s lame, then so be it. And once again, Dawgbyte, I’m sorry for thinking it was you who was doing these horrible things to myself, General Neyland, War Eagle, and probably others whom we don’t even know.

I am not a big fan of CWM, but we have played much better since the Vandy game. From my perspective Georgia has not had an identity on defense since VG left (I actually think Gary Gibbs was the best DC we’ve had in the recent past). A team like VTech has such a good defense because it attacks and does not try to read and react. Sometimes they get burned, but usually they get a team down and go for the throat. Bud Foster has been there many years and has no intention of taking a head job somewhere. He gets athletic players and plugs them into his system and they win 10 games a year. I want the Dawgs to develop an identity on D other than being a soft cover 2 team. I want us to use our athletes and attack. Very few teams would be able to stay with us if we did it right. Get a guy like Joe Kines, who does not want to be a head coach, and give him the D and let him run with it.

See ya, Dawgbite. If anything, we can agree that the guy who claimed to be AJC staff, me, you, War Eagle, Gen. Neyland, and others has only succeeded in bringing Dawgs of a different opinion together to get rid of him. I hope he’s stewing in his jealousy or hatred, or whatever it is that drives him to such displays of ignorance.

Altamaha, we need you back here to smack down guys like this with your measured sanity.

Hunk, where are you? Your thoughts are missed over this win.

And to Buck in the NW, I know I don’t know you like Cuz and the other guys do, but man, I hope you’re fighting the good fight.

I have a paper to finish, so I’ll check in every now and again.

Sometimes, well most of the times, I get carried away.

I would like to express my appreciation for all the true blawgers. The ones that let it all hang out with their name attached to their comments. You guys make this blawg worth reading besides my inane, somewhat insane commentary.

I would like to take this moment to express the loss of one of our own. Buck in the Northwest, has gone to sit at the right hand of Erk Russell. He may not be gone from this world yet, but he is not far from the hedges on the other side. Erk and his chariot are waiting to take him to he elysian practice fields of Dawgdom. The place where God has his tower watching practice. Buck was and will be a close friend and he was a constant voice on this blawg. He will be missed by me and surely by others. Go rest easy my friend, your race is won, the Dawgs are in good hands and save me a seat on the bench, I will be with you before long. Here is to Buck, first, last and for evermore, a true Bulldawg. Go you Buck Cochran, one dam fine Dawg.

Wow, first sign you’ve spent too much time on this blog is when you can pick out an imposter because he doesn’t use the same syntax as the regular.

Anyway, relax and enjoy the ride. He11, after the SCarolina game, most of you were predicting a 4-5 loss season. After Tenn, you were predicting plagues of locusts and the Apocolypse.

The hallmark of a UGA defense has always been bend but dont break. In years past, they seemed to have playmakers who would come up with a turnover or big play right at the opportune moment. Earlier this year, UGA didn’t have any playmakers. Later in the season, a couple of the guys have matured into that role.

Considering the Jekyl/Hyde personality of this team, I think it is amazing that they still have an outside chance of winning the SEC East. Of course, it’s been a weird year with all the top 10 teams getting knocked off by unranked teams.

Nascar, thanks for your kind words on Buck, he is not reading now, but I feel that he knows what you are saying. He really loved this blawg. You and others meant more than you will ever know. Even if you disagreed with him, the give and take sustained him through the thing that took him away. He loved the dawgs, still does, and had nothing but love for all the regulars on this blawg. Pity that the posers chased many of the FOC away in his final postings. He is happy he fought the good fight, he made it to JAX for the win, took weeks away from his life, but he would have not have it any other way. I would hope Chip would throw in a topic on Buck, but he has a job to consider other than us, he has a job to do, Buck knew that. Buck is in a better place, where the grass in the stadium is always green, Erk coaches the defence and the greats before us either are on the field or in the stadium. And James Brown does the halftime show, Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs. Rest easy my friend, tell Lewis we said hello.

Lee, hard to argue with your comments. Many were willing to throw the season away after the USClite game. Many of us wondered what it would take after the Vol game, myself included. I wondered what it would take. I did not say we were doomed and waited for the plane to crash, I wanted to know what it would take. Turned out it was CMR taking control and steering the ship away from the icebergs and back into friendly waters. The team plays on the field, but CMR is the motivational reason we are contending now, not for the SECC, that is in the Vols hands, but for a BCS bid and a top 5 finish. Not bad for a year most of us thought, me included, that 8-4 would be good.

As a loyal Dawg fan, got the degree and destroyed brain cells to prove it, get off this the Vols should do the honorouble thing and lose. Man that is far past pathetic. The Vols you deride, beat the total ever loving mess out of us on the checkerboard. We are a different team now, but this is not the NFL, we don’t get do-overs. They won, they did what it takes in the SEC games and they get to decide who goes to the SECC. If they beat KY, hats off to them. If they do not, we win honestly. But I refuse to lower myself to the standard of praying that a team that beat us loses. This is SEC football. If you can’t take the heat go to the ACC, Tech has plenty of seats.

Dear Diary:

Had a nice long conference call with Nick Saban and Charlie Weiss today. The fraternity of genius head ball coaches is so small, we have grown tight.

We decided that, despite our combined 14-19 record in ‘07, our genius is beyond question or reasonable debate. We just can’t figure out how simpletons like Mark Richt, Tommy Tuberville, and Phil Fulmer manage to put such quality products on the field year in and year out…

Kudos to the D and CWM. I have been as critical of CWM as anyone and given the overall defensive peformance the past 3 years through the UT game this year he has deserved it! Now let’s give credit where credit is due. CWM has pushed the right buttons since the UT game starting with getting Rennie Curran on the field. RC is an absolute terror and he has been the difference maker.

The offense too has been transformed by being balanced. Yes the O line is better but clearly Knowshon is the difference. Many of the yards are after contact and he is simply awesome.

The best news of all…they are both FRESHMAN!!!

I want to thank Lincoln Financial and Yahoo! for having the game online Saturday. I was planning on listening to it via the KY network on Yahoo! but they also had the video feed. Nice suprise. I liked the game plan of running Brown and wearing down the D then popping Moreno in there. I agree Bill I didn’t like the long sideline passes, too predictable and when they become predictable they are easily defended. When it is third and long they need to hit the TE or a WR on a hook route or crossing pattern. Staff has the arm for the quick shots like that and getting a guy down there quickly is no problem. Main thing would be to get that first down. Also, when the up the middle or off tackle runs aren’t working, get those screens and toss sweeps going. Moreno and Brown are powerful enough and elusive enough to get some yardage there. Great job for the D shutting down the scoring of KY. We knew Woodson was going to be the best true QB we have faced all year and he was.

Where is SECisFootball? Quick question. And this is an honest one. WTF happened to you guys Saturday? Does $aban have to pay you back for that game? Auburn has to be preparing to raise the extra digit. Erie about the 666,666 per win for Satan’s pay too.

General, good luck this weekend, I hope you guys get taken to the “Woodson” shed. Hope your noses bleed from the butt kicking KY will hopefully lay on you guys. With the eggs UT and UGA laid this season who would have thunk we would have been where we are at this point in the season. I bet Neyland went crazy with that missed field goal. That is a great atmosphere to be in. Will you guys now step up or step down this weekend?

I was satisfied with the play of the DAWG “D” on Saturday. I still think we are a little too vulnerable to the pass because of the soft coverage. I said it all last week we had to put Woodson under constant pressure. When South Carolina beat them earlier in the year, the kept pressure on Woodson all night. They forced Woodson to make mistakes and he did. The proof is in the pudding. As for the offense? We were inconsistent. Stafford was definitely off the mark for most of the day. Kudos to our receivers! These guys have stepped up and are holding on to the ball. I am proud of them! The run game? I love it! Brown and Moreno run hard! It is exactly what you want to see out of your backs. I am still biased to Knowshon! Honestly, he is what has sparked this team. Look at the offense before he was the featured back and now look at it. This guy is amazing and is drawing National attention! I know we can’t run him to death but when he’s in a groove leave him alone. He is a game changer.

I hope our coaches do a good job of convincing the players how easily Tech can kick our butts this weekend if we are not 100% ready to play. With all of the crazy upsets we’ve seen, a loss to a 7-4 ACC team (and a traditional rival) would hardly register. Finish the drill. 10-2 would be a great season regardless of what happens in the Kentucky-Tenn. game.

I now know what it feels like to be the spouse in an abusive relationship. I may get beat up by my mate, but I don’t want the Einsteins of the world telling me about it… The Vols are more than fortunate to be where they are..but when the Einsteins can’t do math ( and they built WMD’s ), I worry…” Whacked by 41, 45, and 59 points…They gave up those but didn’t get whacked by…”My gawd, Loren, pour me a scotch”…

The kicker is Kentucky will poise a threat to us just like Vandy did to us both…This game is big for the toothless, hillbilly trailer trash from Tennessee and the more refined teethless ones of ol’ Kentuck…This is the one where we’ll play for the Golden Hash Brown Trophy which is then eaten by the HC of whichever school wins the game…SEE CPF’s WAISTLINE, if you can…22 in a row…That would put me at 31 the last time Kentucky beat Tennessee…”Loren, get me that dam scotch, boy”….

On a more serious note, Tennessee may get beat this week. It’s really out of my control, but I would like to see them play a sound game away from Neyland North and win. That has been a problem this year with one exception…MS ST…The deck is stacked in favor of UGA…Yet, if UT wins out, they earned it, whether the Einsteins of the world can do the math or not…

Then you scored 6 points against Vandy at home while you were the #6 team in the land! I thought Spurrier was finally going to take you to the promise land. Instead, after you get trounced against Clemson, you probably won’t even go bowling this year. And to make things worse, I saw that idiot of a thing you call your stud freshman quarterback(Garcia). I just don’t want any drama this weekend. Hey Vols, IF you wind up beating KY, please do us a favor and beat the livin’ dookie out of them early: don’t put us (and yourselves) through the torment of waiting until the wind blows a last minute fieldgoal amiss…of course we’d rather see UT lose but that should go without saying. Also, I heard from someone that the Vols network said something about Athens, GA crying when UT pulled that win away from Vandy. Of course that’s a funny line and our radio guys might have said something similar if the tables were turned, but it’s still untrue. UGA wasn’t crying when UT won. The ‘Dawgs still have way too much to play for even if UT wins out and goes to Atlanta. Heck even if UT beat LSU it wouldn’t dim UGA’s New Year’s season (hint: check the polls).

And to my beloved Dawgs: please spare us the drama of the last couple of ‘Tick games! No desire here for a late game drive that eats up 5 minutes of clock and then go ahead. Or sitting on a 3-4 point lead for 3 and a half quarters. While those make for “great moments in rivalry history,” this year I’d much rather see the Dawgs go into BDS and kick the mustard yellow out of those GT jerseys.

All told, it didn’t look too good back in October after UGA had inexplicably lost to SC and then mauled in Knoxville; puzzling even the UT faithful. Who wouldn’t take the results we have now? Beating UF and AU in the same season was suh-weet! And UGA is sitting pretty way up in the polls where they belong. We all KNOW what dogs do to polls…;)

Now, take care of business ‘Dawgs and whip those ‘Jackets! GATA!

Gen. Neyland As I said last night, I am “cool” with those, such as you, who come on and promote—politely—their team. As for this weekend the Dawgs have to take care of business and let those other cards fall as they may. We can’t do a thing about what happens in Lexington, and I am really sincere when I say, let the best team win. If we make it to the dance in Atlanta, I will feel we sort of “backed in” after the whupping y’all put on us, but the same can be said for y’all after the whupping y’all took from Bama. Strange things happen and we can only think they happen for a reason. Thanks for the good luck wish for us this weekend and I wish you Vowels the same. I just wish Rich Brooks more. :>)

The oddsmakers are cautious about this one. Georgia’s only a 3.5 point favorite. That’s not much for the No. 6 ranked team in the country playing an unranked rival they’ve beaten 6 years in a row. The Dawgs better be ready for business on Saturday. As the legendary Erk Russell might implore, GATA!

Before a season begins, I like to weigh in and pick winners…I picked UGA to win the East, but I will gladly take the Vols in a last second field goal Saturday coming. Al Davis’ ” Just win, baby ” comes to mind…Will Ainge find his groove and light it up..? Will the Tennessee D that showed well vs UGA and the Razorpigs dress out..? 2008 may be a repeat of the whacky season we’ve witnessed in 2007…On the O side of the ball, UT returns 10…On the D side, 8…Punter and PK also return…If these numbers aren’t accurate, I apologize, but I’m thinking they’re close…UF returns a bunch and so does UGA…

Now, this forum needs to focus on the ladies of North Avenue. Go out there and uphold the supremacy of the SEC over the ACC…

The 3.5 points is about right. Tech is only a couple plays away from having the same record as ours. Statistically they are slightly better than we are on Offense, Defense, punting, and kickoff returns and we are playing them at their place.

It is likely to be another close game.

By reality check

November 19, 2007 1:50 PM | Link to this

Remember the old adage, it is defense, the running game, and the kicking game, in that order, that wins football games.

Tenuta’s defense is always good. This year’s averages are almost identical to the past few years. Tech has had a difficult time the last 3 games though, averaging 25 points a game.

Choice is a great running back. His per carry average is the same as Moreno’s. When Choice is healthy - and he is now - Tech’s running game is stout.

Tech has the best punter in the country.

We have ccontinued to improve and we are playing as well as anybody in the country right now, but anybody who thinks Tech can’t beat us is just not paying attention.

Since Tech is projected to go to the Emerald Bowl I checked out the Emerald Bowl’s official Website. It turns out that just two years ago Tech lost its “bowl game” at the Emerald Bowl. It turns out that Tech lost to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference. It turns out that Tech lost by 28 points to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference. It turns out that Tech lost by 28 points to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference whose quarterback was playing only his second game as a starter. I looked for attendance numbers on the Website but the Website failed to mention that fewer than 2,000 “fans” cared enough to go see the team play. Of course the team from two years ago had Calvin Johnson and the current team does not, so I expect performance and attendance will be off a little. Maybe being off probation this time will help Tech. Maybe not. Of course Tech will be without the services of alleged drug possessor Reuben Houston, WHO STARTED IN THE EMERALD BOWL in addition to being arrested for carrying a hundred pounds of pot. Surprisingly, only one of these two facts is listed on the alleged drug possessor’s bio on the Tech Website.

GEORGIA FANS,PAY ATTENTION: The black out shows fans, even the older ones, how much fun games are when everyone yells and claps.Against UK,the crowd seemed louder than usual,-excluding the blackout-even section 106 started to yell more[except me I always yell as loud as I can].I think UGA should do six things differently next year though to create a better home field advantage: 1]Give all students, who want tix, tix,and let them fill up each endzone, I think that would give all students the will to be really early to games also they could be LOUD.Do not cram students who pay tons of tuition money in the upper decks,at Alabama, I went to that game, the students filled a big area of the lower deck and they were very loud. [2]Keep the “It’s Saturday” thing, it is awesome, but bring back “I’m Georgia”-Ben Watson got me super crunk on the big screen! [3]Every away time-out,play review, and some commercial time-outs,the cheerleaders should start the GEORGIA—-BULLDAWGS stadium cheer.During away time-outs,this would distract the away team’s focus during the time-out,and get UGA some momentum. [3]I love the fourth quarter video, but instead of “Here comes the boom”, the PA should play “Who let the dogs out”.I think this would be crazy, the whole stadium could join in the barking parts of the song. [4]Crank the Soulja Boy at least twice during the games, even though next year the song’s popularity will not be as high, it will still get people crunk. [5]When the band plays before and DURING game, the crowd should all join in the cheers,we all know them, so join in.The stadium did respond to the band pretty well the last two games, but next year, let’s up the response! [6]Fans should strive to make kick-off,and DAWG FANS SHOULD NEVER LEAVE EARLY!! Also, let’s start a new tradition of blacking out at least one game a year.No other school consistantly does a blackout, and no dawg fan can diagree that the electricity was extra high and that the black uni’s were sweet! These six things are fairly simple to do,and if UGA can do these six things, Between the Hedges can be up there with Death Valley at LSU.What Dawg fan does not want Sanford Stadium to be considered one of the loudest venues in college football?!

More facts: CWM’s D held one of the highest scoring teams in the country to 13 points; CWM’s D sacked a Heisman Candidate five times. The soft zone some keep complaining about gave up long passes, including a TD on a deep ball. Anyhow, logically, we’ll limit the North Ave School For Boys to about 6-10 points. And, logically, we’ll score about 30-40 points. So, logically, we’ll wear em out. And, laughably and hopefully, the stadium will look kinda like Jacksonville, about half wearing red or black. My heart and my head go with godawgs51, although I believe 45-10 is very unrealistic. Remember I said Tech can beat us, I am not predicting they will. Tech has beaten only one team this year with a winning record, Clemson 13-3. the rest of their wins are against weak teams and Georgia is really playing well right now.

But over the years the big underdog in this game has won fairly often. Tech is a team with some substance and if they play like they did against Clemson and we don’t bring our “A” game on Saturday they will beat us.

The players most of them on most teams play the game for the game and give their all for 60 minutes, I guess trying to get to the next level. I dont think the sec is overrated. I think there is more parity in the SEC than ever before, at least this year, and I think there is more parity in college football these days since I could remember, and I have been watching the college game since the mid 70’s.

The only thing BS about that fumble recovery is where your head is. That call was reviewed, and stood without comment at the league level. The ball was in play, recovered, and run back. Any other call would have been wrong as the rules are written.

You are a whiney loser.

About time a fumble was called correctly. Anyway, they were ACC officials last year.

Yarddawg, ur right; more parity across the board. See: ‘bout every #2 in the polls has been beaten; lotta ranked teams being beaten by unranked teams. One reason, I think, that SEC teams have the records they do is because we play so many games against each other, out of conference losses not withstanding. And, definitely, if the Bugs bring their A game and we bring our B game, we’ll get beat. I worried more about out B game five games ago. I think they’ve come around to having B+ in the first quarter and then the A game follows. Quite a bit more consistent than early in the season. It’s very difficult to have the same output as we had against Awbun and Flawda. At least we have that potential more readily now than early on.

To Dawgbyte and all you other illiterate, inbred UGA morons out there:

As I write this Tennessee is solidly beating Kentucky and your SEC championship hopes are going up in smoke. Which is too bad, since this was probably the closest look you’ll have until Teebow graduates. It’s pretty unlikely he’ll be hurt right before the UGA game next year.

Too bad, so sad.

Go Jackets!

Man, you would figur that these Techies would go hide under a rock in shame ? But here they are on our blog talking trash after getting smashed and buried again 31-17.

Negatives : 1) I was really shocked that Choice and Nesbitt got all those rushing yards taking the direct snap from the center. Everyone breathing knew they were going to run the ball. Very shoddy tackling and play by the linebackers and DL on almost all of those runs. Half of the battle is knowing if its a run or pass. When you know for sure its a run play you stack the line with 8 in the box and shut it down.

2) The stupid muffs and interferences on punts. They almost gave Tech 2 tds. The special teams need a lot of work.

Positives : 1) Destroyed Tech yet again. Its an annual azzwhipping ! Pack your bags Gailey !

2) Stafford’s play. He made great throws and knew when to throw the ball away instead of throwing Int’s.

3) T. Brown’s play. He made a bunch of great runs when they were needed.

4) Massoquai’s play. The difference in the ball game to me. He caught every pass thrown to him. Give him the game ball !

5) The defense’s play. Great except on stuffing the run and some dumb penalties. Choice should have been held to 50 yards rushing.
