A big challenge in red or black

Getting ready for the biennial visit by the Plainsmen from the former Alabama Polytechnic Institute and their War Eagle named Tiger is always an exciting week in Athens. After all, Georgia-Auburn isn’t just the South’s oldest football rivalry, it’s the best kind of college football rivalry.

The schools are close to each other and recruit against each other. Georgia has a tradition of Auburn-bred leaders (Joel Eaves, Vince Dooley, the current Rodney Garner) and likewise Auburn with former Bulldogs as coaches (Pat Dye and the current Will Muschamp and Hugh Nall). Who can forget then-Auburn coach Dye commemorating the 100th anniversary of the rivalry by reciting the rhyme about being “Bulldog-born and Bulldog-bred” and eventually winding up “Bulldog-dead”? Auburn folks are sort of like our country cousins.

To top it off, playing at home doesn’t seem to figure into it, with the visiting team frequently coming out on top (often against a higher-ranked opponent) like last year.

So, all week when Georgia fans have been discussing what’s likely to happen Saturday, it’s been much like the week before the Alabama game: No one has a real sure feel for it. When folks have stopped by my desk to ask what I think, I say that if the Dawgs play like they did in Jacksonville, I think they win, though probably not as easily. This will be the toughest defense they’ve faced since South Carolina and probably the toughest of the season. If we get into a scoring shootout, I like our odds. If it’s a defensive slugfest, not so much.

As for the Blackout, I think it’s a fun idea, should look cool, and if it helps get the players fired up to run out and see mostly black in the stands, that’s great. Much has been made of Auburn’s recent record in all-white, but let’s face it, the color of the shirt or pants doesn’t really have any more to do with the outcome of the game than whether players touch a rock on their way onto the field, or even a granite bulldog. (Remember back in the Goff era when some fans wanted to get rid of that statue because they considered it bad luck?)

As for what Georgia will wear, I’ll be surprised if it’s black jerseys as linebacker Marcus Washington suggested, though I’ve been a proponent of a black spirit jersey for many years. Mark Richt has done a masterful job of dancing around the issue, pointing out how difficult it is to get black jerseys on short notice while never saying they haven’t done it. If they don’t wear black this game, I have a feeling we will see them at some point.

BULLDOG BITES: I was amused to see that Coke is going to give away 5,000 black T-shirts free to UGA students before the game Saturday. I bet that doesn’t thrill the folks at the University Bookstore next to the stadium and the FTX Bookstore on Baxter Street in Athens who are selling special Georgia Blackout black T-shirts at a rather pricey $18. … The Georgia athletics office has issued a warning to fans about potential problems with counterfeit tickets circulating for Saturday’s game. At last week’s Troy game, counterfeit tickets were sold, despite not even being good counterfeits. They were Ticketmaster knockoffs, and as anyone who’s ever attended a game at Sanford Stadium knows, Georgia doesn’t use Ticketmaster. It sells its own custom-printed tickets. Tickets for the Auburn game feature Kregg Lumpkin (6) and Thomas Brown (20) on them. Real UGA tickets also never have the game time on them. … Former Georgia great David Pollack and the CSTV “Chick-fil-A SEC Tailgate” show will be broadcasting live from near Sanford Stadium Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. They’ll be on the east quad next to Sanford Drive between Rutherford and Mary Lyndon halls. Another Bulldog great, Matt Stinchcomb, will guest on the show. … Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams open their seasons with a double-header Friday night at the Steg. The Lady Bulldogs play Richmond at 6:30 p.m. and the men play Jacksonville State at about 9 p.m. This year, souvenir cups similar to the football Munson cups will be sold at the basketball games. The two cup designs feature Lady Dogs coach Andy Landers and the 1983 Bulldog team that reached the Final Four. … Vince Dooley is one of the three finalists, along with “Bear” Bryant and Steve Spurrier, in the AT&T Best SEC Coach of All-Time contest. Fans can vote by texting “SEC” to 234567. Voting runs through Nov. 16. … Here’s another “streak” it would be nice to end this year: It’s been 25 years since the Dawgs beat Florida and Auburn in the same season.

The black jerseys would be a great one time motivator. This team is young and seems to thrive on these motivational ploys. It’s not like we would be ruining tradition by wearing black jerseys for one game and it IS our school color as much as red is. When it’s all said and done the jerseys might provide a spark, but fundamentals, execution, game planning and a little luck will decide this one. Prediction: Georgia 24-Auburn 14. moreno: 156 yards and the legend grows…

I think they need to wear the white Jerseys, they seem to be wearing the whites every time they beat the Auburn Tiger War Eagles and of course they beat the lizards in the whites too.

But, we will only know if the Blackout works if we win. I doubt they will be in Black Jerseys. If so, I think it will look good, just as long as we win! Its all about winning!

Go Dawgs!

You are wrong about the tickets not ever having the game time on them. In the early 80’s the tickets showed 1:30 start for all the games. Look at a 1983 tickets stub. This changed once TV started dictating things. By the way, the equipment managers say the black jerseys have been in for a while. They will have them on Saturday. For all you Auburn fans…you can take I-85 home. There are many Waffle Houses for you to cry in on the ride home.

With Auburn sporting 20 countem’ 20 players from the great state of Georgia it will be like playing our relatives. Word of advice to those twenty players who left our state to play in Alabama: Study harder and you would have qualified to get into Georgia! Enough said!

The great University of Georgia by anyone’s estimation is one of the top public universities in the country. Granted, the advent of the Hope scholarship has helped push it in that direction from where it was in the 70’s and 80’s but it still ranks in the top 15 or 20 in any mainstream periodical.

Everyone is talking about Moreno, but the real key to this game is Stafford… if of course you want to single out one player. Auburn has the best defense we’ve played and are very good at stopping the run. Without an air attack Moreno & Brown run for less than 100 yards and we end up losing. UGA has got to attack the center of the field with our passing attack to open the running game.

The second key for UGA is to ensure we put aggressive pressure on Cox and not give up 3rd and long.

I hope UGA spends more time on practicing for Auburn than they do talking about fashion. I guess that’s what we should expect from a team that celebrates small things like one TD or a win over Vandy as if they’d won the National Title.

This whole discussion reminds me of that scene in Bull Durham where the pitching coach goes to the mound to talk to Nuke and the conversation deteriorates into what to buy somebody for a wedding gift. Comical. So is UGA.

This should be a good physical game as always… Auburn usually comes to play and to hit.

My fear is that our offensive line looked good against weak Florida and Troy defenses (I think Florida’s was the weaker of the two). It didn’t really matter if we called a run or a pass because Stafford had time, the receivers were open and Moreno had just enough room on most of the running plays. Almost anything was going to be successful against those dreadful D’s.

The OL looks improved, but will get an awful big test against Auburn.

My understanding is that Auburn’s O-line is not the strength of their team and may have trouble if we move some people around pre-snap on D. Appear to blitz on most plays and bring 5 about 20% of the time and drop them back the other 80%… I think we can be successful keeping them to 20 or less.

I would be surprised if Moreno dominates like he did against FL and Auburn. He may go over 100, but Stafford will need to be sharp to get this W.

Go Dawgs, lets GATA.

War Eagle, where is your prediction. Are you going with your heart or your head (you have a streak to protect, so be careful) glad to hear your health is improving!

Replay, I was going to post it tomorrow, but since you mention here it comes: UGA 20 Auburn 24, (I think the east division TEAMS are weaker this year than previous years ALTHOUGH DAWGS BEAT BAMA AND OLE Miss, Auburn defense is head of the class in the SEC, UGA has had problems on offense(Tenn., Vandy, SC) until Moreno. Here is the KEY, I FEEL AUBURN CAN CONTAIN #24 BECAUSE THIS WILL BE HIS STRONGEST DEFENSE UGA HAS ENCOUNTER AND HE IS A FRESHMAN, WITH YOUNG OL, also Stafford has to be contain… If I am wrong good luck to the Dawgs in Atlanta because no way Tenn will win out.

Hard to argue against War Eagles’ insights. Unfortunately as a dawg fan I agree with most of them, especially the west being stronger than the east this year. Hopefully we can rattle Cox like we did last year but I have a feeling he’s had this game circled for a while and will play above his abilities. I think it’s going to come down to a lucky bounce, hopefully going the dawgs way. Unfortunately our D will have to keep us in this game so the crowd needs to make some freakin’ noise.

ARDawg,to answer your question, Defense:SEC, scoring defense West, 1,2,5,7, 8(tie), 10 East- 3,4,6,8(tie)11,12. On total Defense LSU and Auburn are the only two with less 300 yards a game… This will a great game Saturday regardless of stats…

DWG & War Eagle

Certainly I am a fan from the east and reluctant to agree with you (at this point).

WarE the stats are not a good representation because they contain the out of conference and the cupcake games. I could be convinced if you know of some SEC stats that were head to head.

I think we could all agree that LSU has been the strongest in the conference. This year I’d say east and the west were pretty demn close. The west has both the strongest and the weakest team in the conference. Other than that it’s been a serious toss up for the rest of the SEC. Two of these games this week could determine who’s right and who’s wrong. Those being GA/AU and AR/TN. I believe at this point the east has the edge in wins against the west, am I correct?

In any event War Eagle, you are correct. This is going to be a great game and one I personally look forward to every year. Good luck to you and your Tigers my friend. I predict a Dawg victory 19-17

This game will be another testament to the Georgia Coaches and the long term direction of our program. Which Dawgs will show up. We can’t chump like AU did against us last year and like we did against UT this year. I’m kinda psyched and intrigued as to what the Dawgs have planned, red or black. Also my hat’s off to Richt for seeing the need to add another dimension to keep things interesting, i.e. the celebration and the mystery of the uniforms.

We also have to remember Auburn had a bye last week and rested most of their key players so they’ve actually had two weeks to prepare for us.

This is Ga/Auburn, oldest rivalry in the South. I don’t care how good AU is, if the Dawgs show up to play we will win. No excuse for not being sky high and ready to play.

By thadawgdude

I love TB but Im a little worried that giving him his due carries may slightly hinder the offensive chemistry we’ve developed over the past few weeks. I don’t think this will happen though, in fact I think it may give us a tough boost in addition to K’MO. If Stafford plays like hes been playing and our recievers make plays like they’ve been making CONSISTENTLY, Im pretty sure we win big. My hope is that Stafford makes AU that team that he just plays great against every year starting with last year. Of course our O-line will be the answer to those ifs and i-thinks.

As for D, we really need to continue to blitz our linebackers. Even when they dont get the hit it puts the QB on edge knowing its coming. Curran needs to be used in blitz packages with his speed. He is chasing the ball very well but needs to squeeze the block for the cutback a little better on inside out pursuit instead of jumping across outside. I feel our linebackers are flying around and playing with more energy when they know they get to blitz some, its fun! Hopefully our D-line can clog things up with Weston out. R. Jones needs to man up THIS GAME! Hes let a few big plays slip through his hands and just needs to make the darn play tomorrow. 4 sacks and 2 turnovers, along with 1 or less turnovers on O= BIG W.

Both teams have a lot of youth. I think UGAs youth on O has become a little better developed than AUs, but on D AU definitely has the edge although talent wise I think we’re even. I think UGA has more overall talent and team speed, but AU probably plays with a little more discipline. Big play ability definitely goes to UGA and I think thats the difference in this game.

I just hope that the Dawgs don’t get distracted by this color-of-the-jersey stuff while Auburn focuses on the game. As has been said, it won’t be what you are wearing, it will be how—and who— you are hitting. GO YOU SILVER BRITCHES, or whatever!

I also would like to add this to the who’s where and why thread. I have grandchillen, grandnephews and nieces at UGA, Auburn and Ole Miss. The ones that are at Auburn and Ole Miss love it, but they are there because they couldn’t get in at Athens. Many would like, but too few are chosen. But, the ones at Auburn will be there tomorrow being good soldiers and cheering for the Orange and Blue. Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.

Dawgbyte, I have children of my college buddies who started at Auburn because they could not get into UGA as freshmen. They transfered after getting good grades at Auburn and have dual allegiances. They have a win win situation this weekend.

In whose parallel universe are there no Auburn rejects at Georgia? I personally know several in Georgia’s lame little master’s programs in bioengineering and environmental design alone. They were classmates of mine in undergrad at Emory. At Coulter they warn Emory’s senior applicants to Auburn of the need to apply at UGA because Auburn will likely deny them at the graduate level, while UGA would take anyone with a pulse. There is apparently no ‘HOPE’ at the graduate level, which keeps most UGA truck driving fans out anyhow. Auburn’s architecture, engineering and vet med programs are all ranked light years ahead of Georgia’s. Indeed, they are each ranked within the top seven nationally - private universities included. UGA isn’t even remotely close. I’m not sure Georgia has ONE graduate program ranked in the top seven nationally, much less three. Stupid naive Bo and Luke Duke Georgia Cletuses…

“Hunker Down You Hairy Dawgs!!” ROFLMAO! Jesus Christ!

Greg What you are saying is that you could never get in, right? Pity. You missed a lot.

Graduation rates are priceless.

Puts the Auburn-UGA intelligence in its proper perspective:

Dumb and Dumber.

Jacket24 I’d ask you about Tech’s grad rate, but frankly, we don’t care.

Dawgbyte, I’m not surprised. Education is an alien concept in Athens.

Is it true that the most popular class at UGA is a senior seminar called “Bekuming a WalMart Greeter”?

I frankly don’t know how UGA keeps accreditation as a real university.

OK, Coach Richt: What’s next?

Sacrificing a bulldog on a giant bonfire at midfield?

Really… How about a victory that doesn’t require cheap tricks?

I guess he’s just finally figured out that this is the only way he can motivate diminished capacity man-children.

jacket 24. Ever hear of sour grapes?

UGA’s average SAT is like 1160, about 30 points below techs. tech is a good school, but if UGA isn’t then tech would only be mediocre by comparison. Which is it?

John Salley, Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, Josh Nesbitt, not exactly mensa members now are they? How did any of these scholars get through tech and stay eligible? Nobody has ever been able to answer this question with any common sense. Were they given a “pass” to play sports at tech or is tech an easy school? It has to be one or the other?

Georgia had a starting QB accepted at Harvard a couple of years ago. Tech has never had anyone of that academic stature starting as a QB for the jackets.

Just admit that your football program is mediocre and congratulate UGA on another top 10 season!
