Getting a leg up …

Asked the other day what was the common denominator in Georgia’s recent wins in Knoxville, Phil Fulmer said, “special teams.”

There’s a good chance that might apply to this year’s game, too, but not necessarily in our favor.

To date, the Dawgs’ coverage of kickoffs has been spotty at best and often just plain bad, resulting in some long returns (though, thankfully, none have gone all the way … so far). Last week against Ole Miss it didn’t take a particularly astute eye to spot the seams in Georgia’s coverage, and the Rebels took advantage of that. Giving the other team the ball at midfield or, worse, in your own territory is courting disaster.

Obviously, the Dawgs need to work on not just getting downfield in a hurry, but making a tackle that sticks. I know special teams are frequently a venue for walk-ons and subs to get some game time and Coach Richt has concerns about players getting hurt on kickoffs, but perhaps an upgrading of our personnel on kickoffs would be helpful.

Former UGA kicking great Kevin Butler raised another point on the radio Saturday night. He doesn’t think Georgia should be using Brandon Coutu for kickoffs. One big reason Butler cited: The danger of Coutu getting hurt helping make a tackle (we learned last year, unfortunately, where we’d be without him). He also disagreed with Georgia’s penchant for directional kickoffs as opposed to just sticking it deep in the end zone, precluding a return. There’s some question whether Coutu can do that consistently, but Butler said there are folks on the team (he mentioned Andy Bailey) who he thought could be coached up to kick it deep on a regular basis. (Butler wasn’t lobbying for son Drew to get the job; he said he thinks Drew is pretty likely to redshirt this year.)

I think Butler has a point. Why take the chance of a long return (something we seem vulnerable to) if you can prevent it?

If we can’t find someone to put it in the end zone, we’d probably be better off just kicking it out of bounds and taking the penalty. I’m being facetious, but the resulting field position would be about what we get most of the time now on kicks and considerably better than we’ve gotten on some kicks.

THREE INTO TWO: This has been debated in the beat blog, but I’ll put in my two cents’ worth. I would hope the coaching staff won’t be in a hurry to take the current successful two-man tailback rotation and turn it into a three-man rotation again. Kregg Lumpkin is a very good back, but he can’t help but be behind Thomas Brown and Knowshon Moreno in terms of sharpness and game-readiness. And trying to run a fairly equal three-man rotation (which hasn’t been particularly successful for us in the past) would mean reducing the number of touches for Brown and Moreno. At the same time, Lumpkin is a senior and a talented runner. And he has a different running style from the more similar Brown and Moreno. So we don’t want him just sitting on the bench waiting for someone to get hurt. I like what one of the guys on the “Fifth Quarter Show” had to say about this last weekend: Use him as a situational back and throw to him as an H-back. Get him the ball out in the open, where he’ll be extremely dangerous. But a true three-man rotation at tailback? Doesn’t sound like a good idea.

It isn’t as easy as just kicking out of bounds and taking the penalty….I think most teams would be smart enough to keep backing us up 5 yards at a time until we are kicking off from the 5, and the penalty would not still be at the 35.

As for directional kicking, I think it can be beneficial, but dang, can’t we kick it to the left just once…every team can automatically set up a left return knowing that is the only place we have kicked it for 7 years.

When a Dog “gets a leg up” you know what he is going to do. Is this what you meant. Well, I hope we do do it to (or on) Tennessee.

-I agree with your comments about our kick-off strategy…I’ve been arguing this for years, and now with the new rule, our directional strategy is in deep trouble…You don’t see many other teams doing the same thing. I think we should kick it into (or out-of) the endzone and avoid all this drama.Making a team start from the 20 yard line as many times as possible will eventually pay-off. We are gonna get burned if we keep this up…it is too predictable and the numbers show it!!

The kickoff strategy plus the walkons with pianos on their backs just doesn’t work. It is not likely to change and I hope it is not just a matter of time before somebody takes one back the distance. They must be afraid that trying to kick into the endzone will result in a low kick with no hang time. It is a bad break for Lumpkin but when he gets in I’m not sure he is quick or fast enough to run behind the current line. He may be helpful in the 4th quarter with a lead.

I am in favor of putting the most talent on the field as much as possible! Historically we have lost some key guys to injury “Boss Bailey” playing special teams. Kregg Lumpkin did get hurt this year and allowed the our offense to discover a new play making ability which is getting athletes in space and making plays. If he can continue that style of play more power to Bobo. If not let him to continue to play every where else he can including special teams. Go Dawgs!

Phat Phulmer is right on this one, special teams were the difference in the previous wins in Knoxville. Our kick-off team this year is not suspect, their horrible. Stop the pitty on the boys who can’t get in the game and put the real men in that know what to do. Hopefully if we kick off a bunch it will be a good sign that the offense is scoring a bunch.

I am a bit concerned also with the fact Phat Pulmer has had 2 weeks to study us and I guarantee they will be prepared. I truly hope Coach Martinez lets the boys get aggressive with D and put pressure on Ainge. Tenn O-line is massive, but we are much quicker and Ainge does not react well to pressure (ala basket toss pass in end zone for a safety). I really don’t understand if we supposedly have sooooo much speed on the corners why don’t we man up tight instead of the 8 yard cushion. Pressure on Ainge, tie up receivers = 3 and out for the Vowels. Come on coaches, lets see our talent whip theirs.

Stephen, you’re a tool. This IS interesting to a real fan. Yours was a crappy waste of a reply.

I thought the same thing about kick offs early on in the season, but no one agreed. It must still be possible to kick into the end zone, because I see other teams do it. All of our kick offs are going no further than the 10 yard line. And then they are STILL getting 10-20 more yards. Something’s gotta give. I hope the coaching staff is working on this.

“Use him as a situational back and throw to him as an H-back. Get him the ball out in the open, where he’ll be extremely dangerous.” I think this is an excellent way to use Lumpkin! I hope to catch as much of the game as possible but this weekend will be somewhat problematic for me. I walk my eldest daughter down the aisle at 1:00 and the Dawgs start play at 3:30. I feel sort of like that fellow in the Bud Light commercial who hires an auctioneer for the wedding he attends. The lesson here for Bulldawg dads is to never give your consent for marriage before checking the schedule. Man … what was I thinking? Go Dawgs!

If there’s anyone Georgia should be using as an H-back, it’s not Lumpkin. He’s the best North-South runner Georgia has, and probably the least likely of the three to make a defender miss in the open field. I like Brown getting the ball as an H-back, with Moreno and Lumpkin getting most of the carries.

You Lapdogs make those Bama retards look like rocket scientists. Thank goodness we ignored the UGA recruiters. If any of you red neck inbreeds plan on attending the massacre in Knoxville the directions are simple; push your 20 foot tall, 20 year old pickup trucks off of the dirt road you live on toward the first paved road see and head north. Dont forget to tie down Granny’s rocking chair this time, and lay off the Jug until after the game, Jacksonville is south. If you still cant figure it out ask Cooter what I-75 looks like, then follow anyone you see wearing ORANGE, shoes, and drinking out of a cup instead of spitting in it. Make sure Jethro is driving, last season when we were at Erik Ainge Field at Neyland South (Uncle Jed calls it Sanford Stadium) we taught him how to count to 51, so just add 24 to that, which is the number of times your offensive line took the SAT. P.S. Bamadon, MTSU huh, what happened, did Bama meet its quota on special needs students and Auburn rejects? Cant wait to see you Goobers this month. Stupid is as stupid does.

It’s that simple, man! You know I can good-naturedly pull against your team, perhaps even tweak you a bit, and not make it mean-spirited or personal. 69BullDawg, not so much fun when the tables are turned. It is your fellow “Junkyard Boogers” and fans who manage to turn competition among kids into another war among the states. Teach those mutts how to sit and heel, if you dont start the insults directed toward fans and kids than this useless blog for a below average football team wont evolve to this. Think about what you guys write. People who read these blogs have children that participate in sports at these schools. They also reside in Georgia. Many comments are aimed directly at them. This is a game among college students who are required to spend more time in practice, meetings, and film rooms than in class or studying. They fully commit themselves to your weekend enjoyment and your fellow dawgs boo and criticize them, and now you want to claim foul because now your feelings have been hurt worse. You guys need to grow up. If you dont have the stones to take it then dont write it. maybe you should consider another trip back to that Tickle Pile to relax you a bit. No need to fret Dawgs, this will all be over soon and gymnastics season will be here before you know it.

DumbassDawgs, wow, you have to be a Vol fan. I love to see a moron try to be a smarta$$…very predictable but very entertaining.

Dawgbone / Cuz, perhaps you should reconsider correcting someone’s spelling given the fact you can’t even spell your name correctly.

51 - 33, or Fifty-one to Thirty-Three. Oh, snap!

Laura Bush, I spell my name correctly. Maybe it’s just that you are from “off”.

18 pts? No one seems to remember the 2003, 41-14 thrashing in Knoxville…27pts is truly brutal.

Oh SavDawg, I remember it well. It’s the Volteens who want to forget it.

wow, really? i come on here to read some good, quality jabbing about tomorrow’s game and all i see are a bunch of comments about where the biggest rednecks live. really? i can’t help but find it humorous. georgia, alabama and tennessee fans (which i am) trying to calling each other hillbillies and rednecks? it’s like a listening to yankees and sox fans call each other obnoxious. Pot - kettle.

C’mon - do something better with your lives.

BTW Vols are gonna pound you fleabags tomorrow.

Well… I’ve just wasted ten minutes of my life scanning this crap…back to SECFAnatics for actual fottball talk with some civility.

You know dumbjerk, I asked a question, I did not remember UT having an Ag school. You could have corrected me in a civil manner, but I can tell that you are just another classless run off at the mouth, pathetic piece of white trash. Go to Hollywood and hang with Brittney, ya’ll are both trash. You would need to climb on your mother’s shoulders and ask your grandma to pass you a ladder to kiss my behind. EMRBG.

Bill, after last year’s Vandy game, you gave a quick post of “Fire Martinez… NOW!!” or something along those lines. That needs to be repeated until it gets done. The offense stunk too, don’t get me wrong, but the defense has been horrible basically since LAST years UT game. I’m tired of it.
