It takes two …

I get the feeling that maybe the best thing that could have happened to Thomas Brown was Knowshon Moreno.

From the first time he touched the ball this season, the redshirt-freshman from New Jersey became a crowd favorite, not just because of his awesome running skills, but because of his energetic, spirited play and the way he jumps up and runs back to the huddle. He’s a spark plug, just like David Pollack was for Georgia’s defense a few years ago.

Moreno still has things to learn, however, so despite what many fans would have preferred, Coach Mark Richt has kept senior Thomas Brown as the starter, although both backs have gotten plenty of carries. The result has been Moreno getting better as he watches Brown, and Brown, feeding off Moreno’s energy, playing the best football of his career. Saturday showed what that can result in … 180 yards and three touchdowns. And that was with a hurt shoulder!

Brown made the point about Moreno’s impact himself after the game. “I’m a pretty self-motivated person,” he said, “but at the same time I am competitive. [Moreno] comes out every day with a lot of energy and it kind of pushes us all.” Moreno and Brown appear to be pushing each other on and off the field (as the dancing on the sideline showed Saturday) in a way that hasn’t happened before when tailbacks shared time in a Richt backfield.

Suddenly Georgia has a running game to reckon with. And that’s despite a young offensive line that at times makes the running backs do just about all the work.

As Matthew Stafford said, it’s fun to watch them.

MORE GOOD STUFF: Major kudos to Mohamed Massaquoi for the way he went up high for that touchdown pass from Stafford. MoMass has really elevated his game this season. I still don’t understand why we don’t throw to him more often. … Brown had several terrific runs, including that 50-yarder for Georgia’s first score when he made a great cut, and the one that put Georgia up 30-17 when he juked a Rebel just about out of his shoes. Moreno looked really good, too, with his 90 yards and one touchdown. … We know from the past two weeks that if there’s a minute left on the clock, Stafford and company are fully capable of getting into field goal range. … We didn’t end up with a successful possession after it, but that onside kick was a thing of beauty. … Another good game for Brandon Miller, including an interception. Let’s hope he keeps it up; we’re going to need more of that down the road.

NOT SO GOOD STUFF: The scattered boos when Tripp Chandler continued dropping passes early on. It’s understandable, considering the passions the game engenders, but it’s definitely not cool to boo your own players in the college game. Coaches, OK. Officials? Definitely. I know a lot of the ovation Chandler got when he finally made the first of two catches Saturday was sarcastic, but fortunately the kid didn’t realize that. He took it as a show of support and ended up making another, bigger catch later. Let’s hope he’s gotten the monkey off his back and we won’t have any more sorry booing episodes. … Georgia’s defensive troubles Saturday didn’t appear to be a case of the team coming out flat after the Alabama upset or playing lethargically as Bulldog teams have been known to do against lesser opponents. No, both our lines (but especially the defensive line) were simply outmanned by the Ole Miss lines. The fact that we won is due to superb individual efforts and the Dawgs’ greater depth at skill positions. As Richt said after the game, “I’m glad we could win the game and not play our best.” … Georgia’s secondary overreacted to getting burned on a long pass by playing extremely soft coverage the rest of the game, allowing Ole Miss to dink and dunk its way downfield, eating up clock while we hardly pressured their quarterback at all. … Kregg Lumpkin, wearing a massive hand cast, was put in on the kickoff receiving team Saturday, and Ole Miss proceeded to squib kick it toward him much of the time. He picked up one for a short return but let a couple of others bounce past him to deep man Thomas Brown. If he wasn’t ready to catch the ball, why put him in? … Kickoff coverage was again poor. More about this later in the week.

OTHER STUFF: So, a game with no live television coverage, and we still have numerous lengthy “media” timeouts? Was that so CSS wouldn’t have to bother to insert commercials later in its taped coverage, or so we could be subjected to more commercials on the jumbotron? … The dry turf was coming up in huge chunks and players sliding were kicking up quite a bit of sand. They came out at halftime trying to do some makeshift repairs to the field. If the drought doesn’t break over the next five weeks, we’ll be seeing some literal sandlot football come November. … Hope the members of the Redcoats really like The Who since they’ve had to play that show three weeks in a row.

So, Mr. “I can’t Catch” Chandler says that the players aren’t playing for the fans, they’re playing for the team. If that’s the case, then catch the damn football for your team. And another thing, if if weren’t for your fans, you wouldn’t be playing football - there would be no practice fields, weight rooms, stadium, etc. I didn’t boo Chandler at the game on Saturday, so why would he get p** at ALL FANS?? Get used to it, fans boo in the pros too; oh wait a minute, you have to catch balls to make it that far.

Another good win for the Dawgs. There were some really good things(over 300 yards rushing) and some not so good things(soft defensive). Great job by Thomas Brown. I agree that we will need both later down the road. In order to win on the road in hostile environments later in the year(i.e. Knoxville for example) we are going to need to be able to run the ball. Let’s not forget that the best thing for a young quarterback is an effective running game. Brown and Moreno have great days will make Stafford’s job easier. I am not sure that Moreno is ready to carry the ball 25-30 times a game. This is the SEC. The toughest conference in the nation. Running the ball that much will wear him down since his body is not used to the wear and tear of the SEC. We need to protect him and use the tough nose senior, Thomas Brown. Brown is making sure that we don’t forget about him. It is great to see the Dawgs run the ball like that. We have a redemption game on Saturday. I hope the defense remember last year’s game again UT. I am believing that the defense will redeem themselves and UGA will win by at least 10 points.

It’s a good thing Tennessee plays such horrible special teams. Especially against us. I’m glad to see we were able to grind it out, and UT hasen’t had the best run defense this year. Can’t wait till Saturday, when we’ll be on national TV…again.

Excuse me but these guys aren’t playing in a Sat morning YMCA FB game. They’re in the big time and Chandler got booed for not doing his job. There wasn’t anything personal about it the fans were just mad. Bill, just how do you know that the cheering when he caught the ball was sarcastic? Maybe that was just what the Doctor ordered because he laughed and caught the ball. CMR says that he has nobody else to put in our Coach hasn’t been able to coach him up to make catches so I don’t see how he was hurt in any way. If he were that thin skinned he shouldn’t play. Think about what the fans, you in your columns and other people have jumped Stafford about yet he just shrugs it off and gets up calls another play and goes on his way. Remember Chandler didn’t get booed for one drop, nor 2 nor 3 but several all year long. I thought the crowd cheering him was a break in the tension and it appears so did he.

Hey…Georgia not playing for fans…shut up. You are such a meat head. Of course they don’t play for us. They play for the University of Georgia. He is not out there trying to drop passes. He goes to my church and his parents teach Sunday School with me. They are SUPER people. Troy Sadowski also thinks he is a good TE. Until you have played TE in the SEC and posted your official stats on here…keep your ignorant mouth shut.

Why is Florida and Oklahoma still ranked in the top 10 when both lost to unranked opponents? Also, these were the first “worthy” unranked teams either have played all year. They freakin lost! Georgia loses to an unranked South Carolina team and drops ten spots in the poll, a team which is now ranked 11th. What a joke. Both of those teams should be behind the Dawgs easily.

Auburn beat #4 Florida, # 23 Kansas State( beat Texas 20 points), lost overtime to #6 South Florida(beat WVA #3, 13 points). Auburn opponents have a record of 15-4. Auburn is young, made early mistakes, not in top 25. NO JUSTICE. Auburn has #1 at LSU, at Arkansas, #12 at UGA, Vandy , Ole Miss and Bama at home, maybe if we win all these games break the top 25. This is impossible, but how many rank teams would enjoyed playing Auburn Sat. night, especially getting a CHOP thrown in their face?? I think UGA will beat Florida and sent classless Myers to his crying towel.

Congratulations War Eagle on your team’s victory over the hated Gators. Looks like another typical “tough as nails” Auburn team to me … despite your two losses. I only watched two games on Saturday … Bama/Florida State and your boys against the Gators. Up here in Virginia … except for those two games it was an SEC wasteland on TV. Besides the usual dose of VA Tech it was winless Notre Dame vs Michigan State and Holy Cross and somebody. I spent the morning watching Georgia clips on You Tube and wishing I was in Athens. Man what a waste of a football Saturday. Would have loved to have seen my Dawgs against the Rebs but it was not to be. However watching Auburn beat Florida made the day not a complete loss! Too bad every Georgia game played is not available via pay per view.

And as far as Teblow, I am sick of hearing what a great football player this guy is. He has been called “Legend” and “God”. Florida fans are the biggest LOSERS in the world!

I think most of the boos in Sanford were at the coaches for still playing Tripp Chandler, and not at Tripp himself. The boos were meant to show the fans’ dissatisifaction with the coaches’ decision to play him and constantly throw to him. I, also, dont believe the cheers after he made the catch were sarcastic. I think the fans actually felt good for him and wanted to show their support.

When you hear someone boo in a college football game you can be sure that it came from someone who never really played the game. I’m also sure that if you put them in front of 92,000 people they could not grab their butt with both hands. They will also yell very good instructions like, “Catch the ball ,idiot!” to their son in Pony League. Won’t tell him how to catch because he doesn’t know. Hope the boo birds go back to Live Atlanta Wrestling or whatever fits their mentality. Stay out of Athens, please.

Wow what a spirited debate it is tonight. Look at all the madness you caused Mr. King.

As far as the booing issue. I do not condone it nor would I teach it to my 9 yr old who watches and goes to the games with me. As a die hard Dawg fan I save my disdain for bad calls by the refs and whoever the opposing team is ( especially bugs and gators). The boo birds are still not as annoying as the fans that feel it necessary to shout profanity within earshot of ladies and youngsters. I am no saint by any means, but I do watch my mouth around kids and ladies.

The issue of the sparked running game is a no brainer IMO. I think having Moreno in the rotation is definitely giving an incentive for Brown and others on the offense to give it their all and a little extra when called upon. Stafford and Moreno are definitely the future leaders on this offense. I believe Lump will be the X factor in the TN game. The last time he came back from an injury he was phenominal(refer to the SECCG in 2005).

Too bad for Clemson, I will have listen to the “fire Bowden” chorus from the Clemson faithful a little early this year. As for the Auburn and FL game, I am still recovering from a mild hangover. I was jumping up and down and shouting War Eagle like a bonified fan during much of the game, especially at the end. Congrats Auburn, a Georgia win and a Florida loss always equals a great weekend.

BTW, Cuz I agree to pitch in and help with the bail if someone would just put some 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen on that beautiful bastion of college football. Good grief!!!

booing doesn’t do a thing to help the team,it doesn’t reflect on the team or the player targeted either.all it does is show the complete lack of class of the”fans” doing it.some of us in the stands love the team and the players and hard fought competition.if you are a low class drunk red neck and don’t like what’s happening on the field don’t curse or boo, please do the rest of us a favor and take your drunk butt home so we can enjoy the game.90 % of the people booing the players don’t know a damn thing about football anyway and are too stupid to shut up and learn something.

It bothers me to see grown men booing a teenage athlete. It’s one thing for students to boo but adult men (and women for that matter) should know better. I feel bad for Tripp. He’s not dropping the passes on purpose. So let’s make conservative effort not to boo our players. To make matters worse this was a fairly big recruiting weekend. What kid wants to come play for a program who’s fans boos their team.

We’d better stop playing that silly soft defense, or else. Problem is, the Bulldogs just aren’t that strong at cover corners. Don’t remember the defense recording a single sack Saturday. The Rebs pretty much had their way with the defense for 2 3/4 quarters. The ‘Dogs were EXTREMELY lucky for the “gift” fumble on the 2 yard line. Wonder what would have happened if the Rebs had gone up by two TD’s. Don’t want to. Agree with you 59Bulldawg. I too spent 11 years in the football wasteland of the Old Dominion. Whereas, I LOVED my time there, I could NEVER adequately explain what “game day” Saturday’s were like in the SEC. I feel your pain. WAREAGLE, job well done!! The War Eagles took it to the Gator’s from the beginning. Got a bit scared there at the beginning of the 3d qtr., but thankfully they got things stabilized. Had a call from daughter, Anne Randolph, in Gainesville giving me the total review at midnight Saturday. AR said the looks on the Gator fans faces was “priceless.” And, that they really acted rudely towards all the AU fans. Told her nothing new there. Cuz, offer still stands. We ought to get together a proposal to water the field. Bermuda turf will begin to go dormant as the nights drop below 60 degrees. THEN they’ll have a real mess. What a joke. The middle of the field looks terrible. What are they waiting for??

Ok… sorry for being off topic but I have something I need to get off my chest. Last night I was watching the Eagles-Giants game. The eagles offense was introducing themselves by saying their name and what college they went to. When Reggie Brown came up he said “Reggie Brown, Carrollton High School”! What the heck? Is he ashamed of the school he went to? Hate to say it, but I lost some respect when he said that… Let me know if any of you hear the same thing? I hope I just misunderstood him…

Even if it was NOT a matter of class to boo a college player, why would you? If your sole justification is just demanding your college football team live up to your high personal standards, do you really think booing a player is going to help that situation? Great strategy there. Is the player going to try harder, is the coach going to change his mind, is the other team going to feel bad and drop it down a notch. I could understand if there was some benefit but its just a stupid act, counterproductive. Not to mention, the whole reason fans are there, thier JOB description, is support. (as in help to win). Forget about sportsmanship, how about just not helping out the opposing side. I guess it would only be fair to boo those fans for NOT doing thier job either. Sit and cheer, or catch a lazer beam with a LB on your back. Yea, Chandler is the only one dropping the ball. He’s the lazy stupid ahole.

You are right. Reggie did say it. I have seen other players do this - use thier HS not college in the intro’s. I hope that’s all he was doing. I don’t know of any reason he would not want to say he played at UGA.

UT is giving 1.5 to 2 points to the Dawgs depending on which line you look at. I thought it would be a pick but this is close enough.

Joe - I have seen this done before. Players sometimes do it to honor a teacher, a coach or community member. Might want to check Carrolton news.

I disagree with booing college athletes, particularly at my alma mater…especially during a big recruiting weekend.

The cheers for Chandler’s catch were not sacarstic. They were genuine. Everyone wants to see him do well and get his confidence back. If we are going to win this season, he has to make plays, and everyone knows that. UGA has relied on its tight ends heavily for success in recent past (Larry Brown, Jermaine Wiggins, Ben Watson, Leonard Pope).

People booing - I attribute this to people’s expectations mixed with frustration. You can feel the tension in Sanford Stadium. Every traditionally “upper echelon” SEC program has won a ntional championship in the past 10 years or finished undefeated (and Bama won in ‘92). Many Georgia fans are tired of waiting for their time…you can just feel it in the stadium.

Last, we are probably one of the worst schools about leaving our games early. The only time we stay is when it goes down to the bitter end or we blow out a highly ranked opponent (LSU 2004). That LSU game is the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at Sanford. I wish we could do that every weekend…or at least consistently against big opponents.

Ok let me say in our section we were NOT booing the player. We were booing the coaching staff that let him start and miss his first pass. This is something that as fans we are sick of seeing. We have a TE that caught a touchdown against Okie state and does not get the start, and chandler, who missed HUGE passes still does. This is a coaching issue. Plus if you can remember MO MASS got the same treatment, and now uses that as inspiration to be a better player.

dylan, think you got your point across? I wasn’t there but from what I’ve read nobody was jumping Chandler because he’s some kind of bad guy. Everything else has been tried and hasn’t worked but when he got the standing ovation he came back and caught another one. I’m not saying or implying that Chandler is a bad guy but it is a coaching thing. CMR says he doesn’t like it but he understands why fans would boo and since we don’t have anyone to replace Chandler with that’s the way it’s going to be. Lighten up and give Tripp a standing “O” this week at the start of the game.

Hines Ward honored East Point High School when he was in the Super Bowl. I checked some reliable sources to see if he was upset at UGA. Quite the contrary I was told. He just wanted to give his old High School a boost and what larger stage could he have done it.

Sometimes things are not as they appear. If Chandler is making all his blocks downfield, I will leave it to the guys who get paid the money to announce the starters.

And if you want to boo players, go to Falcon’s games instead of Georgia games.

Clemson is a bunch of pansies, kind of like the UGAy fleabags. Clemson has absolutely 0 talent on that team. They wont win another game this season. Tech meanwhile will be 10-2. ACC and Georgia state CHAMPS baby! Yeeeeeahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Bill King —— I know you understand the point is to score while preventing the other team from doing so.You say the defense overreacted after the long td from Adams to Wallace.First off, Asher Allen had good coverage on that play it was just a very good throw and catch.Second that was the only passing td for Mississippi in the game and just the second passing td surrendered ALL SEASON.This constant complaining about soft zones ignores the obvious……it works.

Goatdawg, Why do you think these guys are playing college football in the first place. Use a little common sense buddy. This is the minors for football. Lets say you majored in computer science and some big tech company offered you millions of dollars to do something you went to college for. Even if you were a junior would you say “nah, I really want to get my degree?” Heck no you wouldnt. If your degree was that important you would go back and get it later. Don’t be glib.

Saturdays are for the support of your home team and amature players. They get a scholarship not millions of dollars to deal with “it’s all about me fans”. Boooing hurts players moral, recruiting, and the rep of the dawg nation. Go boo millionairs on sunday, politicians, movie stars, or your boss. Lay off a student who hasn’t and may not make a dime off of football.

Are you guys ready for the daily dose of reality?

1) I can boo, jeer, cheer, anyone I want. And when I booed after Chandler dropped his 2nd pass, I wasn’t booing Chandler, I was booing the coaching staff that is keeping him in the game! How many times is he gonna do that to us!

2) And if Chandler can’t handle it, then we definitley need someone in the game who can! If 90,000 fans in the big bad SEC is too tough for him, he should have gone to Georgia Southern.

3) Let’s face it, we played very mediocre for the fist 2 and a half quarters, almost 3 full qtrs. I think our ability to keep fresh, more talented guys on the field for longer was what won out. From the beginning, we were being out hustled and outplayed by an inferior team. We better step it up next week, UT has a very solid offense, and I don’t trust our offense in a shoot-out.

4)However…..Our offensive line is really starting to come together. Although we are still missing assignments glaringly, they are making huge strides and I really think Coach Serals is a great coach.

5) Thomas Brown and Moreno are definitley top 3 tailback tandems in college football.

6) Auburn is going to get real good the rest of the season! Nothing to play for except pride, I know a lot of my friends that are counting a W against the Tigers, and I keep reminding them that we will be very up and down this year. Expect some more downs before it is all over. We are too young.

7) Can we take advantage of the gift that AU has given us?

Go Dawgs!

It is really funny to read blogs by Tech fans. They come on a UGA blog to talk junk about UGA being overrated. UGA maybe overrated, but they beat Tech every year. If Tech fans had any sense or class at all. They would want to play a UGA team, that is undefeated and highly ranked. I would love a Governor’s Cup, where both teams are ranked. Oh well.

some people on here seem to think that buying a ticket gives them the right to do or say anything they want while at the game.i don’t care what you do as long as it doesn’t interfere with my right to enjoy the contest.if you are seated close to me and continue to be loud and obnoxious i will ask you politely to please be quite.if you persist,i will TELL you to sit down and SHUT UP.i will not speak to you a third time, but will go to security and ask that you be removed.anyone using gross profanity around my lady friend or daughters will not get the privilege of being asked,i will go at once to security and ask that you be removed.i will NOT have another saturday ruined by ignorant rednecks!BTW,i am 6’ tall and weigh 225lbs,and i spent 20yrs in the service of uncle sam.i would not threaten anyone physically and i would adivse that you act likewise.i not only have the strength and size to defend myself,i also have the knowledge and the training to do so.don’t take the big old dude with the gray hair lightly.i only ask that you respect me and my wishes as i respect you and yours.

Point on, Shane. I quit going to the games because of the “performance” of some of these red necks that never darkened a classroom door. I am not as big as you, but like you, I am a 20+ year vet who can take care of himself. I don’t, however, go to football games to have confrontations, but to enjoy watching my dawgs. I find I can do this better in the privacy of my home. Wish you luck, however.

dawgbone,i know what you mean,i stopped taking my family to falcon’s games 20 yrs ago because of boorish actions of the fans.i’ll be damned if i will give up going to see the dogs because some fans have no self control or feelings for others.if enough of us long time fans stand up we can get this stopped.i agree that confrontation{especially of a physical nature}should be avoided,if possible, there is no reason that security should not throw these people out or lock them up if you report them.read “bulldog pride” on page 128 of last saturday’s program.uga doesn’t want these people in the stands anymore than we do.BTW,a young couple from ole miss sat directly behind us saturday, and we enjoyed watching the game with them so much that we invited them to join us for drinks after the game.they later went clubbing with our group in athens, dressed in their team’s colors and everyone had a great time.we have a standing invitation to tailgate with them in the grove the next time we are at ole miss.these people stayed until the bitter end{uga fans were heading for the exits} and rooted their team on,never once booing their players or ours.i must say that the fans around us{90% uga} were well behaved and the visitors were impressed with the way they were treated and said they would be back.

Shane We were always well-treated by the Ole Miss folks, as well. Are they still wearing shirt and tie and dresses to games? dawgbone, the young lady did have on a dress, the man wore an ole miss golf shirt and dress slacks.as a young man i always wore a sports coat and tie to uga games.it was the norm then.now i usually wear khakis or dress shorts, according to the weather, and the required uga shirt.what impressed me most about my friends from the magnolia state was the respect they showed for us older people.they called us sir and ma’am untill we asked them to stop, and when we returned from the concession stand loaded with goodies the young man stood and held my friend’s food and drink for her untill she was seated.it was refreashing to see young people with such good manners.all this while their team was losing!as i said,we were glad for their company, and look forward to seeing them next time at ole miss.

Cuz- Hines Ward did say his High School but it was not East Point High School. There is no East Point High School. That would be Tri-Cities and DGD Jonas Jennings attended high school there. As far as the NFL Intro’s that started a couple of years ago when if I am not mistaken it was either T.O. or Randy Moss who did it first. Also its just what someone early in the post …its just away to give your city/school a shout out. Just for the record Hines Ward attended Forrest Park high in Clayton County. Also Forrest Park named one of the biggest streets after him.

As far as the booing goes…it truly is sad that “adults” boo these college kids. I get p** that Tripp Chandler drops passes just the same as I do when we miss a tackle. But how do you boo these kids. Come on. Its a game.

Shane, couldn’t agree with you more. My brother, Doug, once said that 50% of the people at Bulldog games NEVER darkened a classroom at UGA. Don’t know if I believe the ratio is that high, but it IS significant. One can tell the “hangers on” pretty easily. I thank God my seats are around wonderful people who enjoy the game for what it is. Whereas, I DO get aggravated with some of the coaching gaffs, I NEVER boo or deride players. Was at a tax accounting seminar several years ago, and one of the speakers was from U.Mississippi. He was/is on faculty there, and put the whole thing in perspective. We all should remember that football IS only a game.
