“One and done, baby!”

The last time all three King brothers watched a Georgia football game together on TV was the 1999 game against the Insects, but we had all gathered at my parents’ home in Athens earlier Saturday to celebrate my birthday, so we decided to watch the Dawgs and Alabama on my brother’s big-screen set in Watkinsville, joined by my daughter and one of my nieces.

We wanted to hear how the Scott Howard-Eric Zeier broadcast team did in their debut without Larry, so we muted the sound on ESPN (where they seemed to spend a lot of time talking about things other than the game anyway) and instead listened to the Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network while watching. It took us a little while to get used to the audio running a couple of seconds ahead of the picture, but that wasn’t really a problem.

That 1999 game we’d all watched together went to overtime and didn’t turn out well, so when this one also went to overtime, we were more than a bit nervous. Literally on the edge of our seats, in fact. Thank goodness Matthew Stafford and Mikey Henderson were as cool as could be, though.

The Dawgs indeed proved they were still man enough (thank you, Pat Dye) to handle the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, and that big old Dogpile in the end zone was one of the prettiest sights I’ve seen in a long time (though I was concerned about poor little Mikey at the bottom). My son, who was at the game at Bryant-Denny Stadium, said pandemonium reigned among the UGA fans there for about three minutes after the catch, while those Bama fans who weren’t pelting the Dawgs with cups sat there stunned. News alert: Saban doesn’t walk on water.

Every SEC win is crucial nowadays and the Bulldogs face some tough (and tougher) challenges ahead, but Saturday’s win was the kind you can build a team and a season on. Stafford might have been maddeningly inconsistent over the course of the game, but when it mattered, he delivered. Likewise the still sometimes drop-happy receiving corps. Our running tandem was steady if not spectacular. The Georgia defense might have looked winded and wilting in the fourth quarter, letting Bama rip off some runs up the middle, but when it came to OT, they were nearly perfect. And Georgia’s young and much-questioned offensive line played well, seemingly getting better as the game progressed.

There’s a lot of room for improvement, but this is one to savor. Georgia winning over the Tide in Tuscaloosa and the Yellow Jackets losing. Quite a birthday!

MORE GOOD STUFF: That first drive by Georgia was the best so far this season, with a good mix of play calls by Mike Bobo. Adjustments by the Bama defense took away those easy screen-pass completions on subsequent drives, but Georgia still managed to move the ball when it had to. … Sean Bailey came up big, and Stafford throwing to Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown continues to be one of the Dawgs’ best weapons. … Both Bailey and Moreno showed a lot of second effort. I wish Moreno’s fire and spirit would spread throughout the team. … The Dawgs were remarkably successful on third down, definitely a good sign for the offense.

NOT SO GOOD STUFF: At least four dropped passes, three by tight end Trip Chandler alone! He did, however, partially redeem himself with a key catch on the final drive for the ultimately unsuccessful field goal attempt (though we would have been even closer had he not had one of his drops earlier in that drive). … Two interceptions. On the first one, a pressured Stafford didn’t square his shoulders and threw into coverage instead of throwing it away. And on his second interception, Stafford simply overthrew his receiver. There were other passes he threw too high or behind his man. And still his numbers were pretty good, and he maintained his composure. If this guy ever clicks for an entire game, watch out! … Our secondary (notably Bryan Evans) got flat-out beat on a couple of long Bama passes. … Georgia continued to have to waste timeouts early because of personnel and organizational problems (one even called by the defense), leaving us working desperately against the clock at the end. … Will someone at UGA please tell Dannell Ellerbe how to fasten his helmet properly? … Penalties hurt Georgia, limiting one drive to a FG and keeping a couple of Bama drives alive. … The Georgia defense needs to work some more on handling a no-huddle offense. We’re likely to see a lot more of that down the road.

ON THE AIRWAVES: Scott Howard was informative and steady handling the play-by-play, though for most of the game we found ourselves missing the tension-building Munson laments and colorful descriptions. At the end, though, the fan in Howard came bursting out with his voice breaking like a teenage boy as he screamed “Touchdown!” after the overtime score. Installment #1 in the Scott Howard “best of” compilation. As for the audibly nervous Zeier, he started out sounding like Joe Piscopo’s “I’m screaming and I don’t know why” sportscaster on “SNL” as he shouted every word breathlessly, but he calmed down a bit as the game went on and provided knowledgeable and pertinent analysis of pass routes and strategy. And for those looking for a bit of comforting homer-ism, there was Zeier’s frequent use of “we” and “our” throughout the game. … It was interesting that ESPN’s Lee Corso, who earlier on “Gameday” had predicted a Bama victory by putting on the elephant’s head, was already sounding like a UGA convert when sideline man Loren Smith talked to him shortly after Georgia’s first drive. … ESPN completely missed a play while showing a feature on tailgate food. They should keep that stuff contained to halftime. … And on a non-Georgia note, even the Old Ball Coach had to crack a half-smile/grimace Saturday afternoon when LSU pulled that beatifully executed flip pass on the fake field goal. That’s the kind of stuff that makes college football so much fun.

I was so upset when Bama tied the game and the Dawgs missed but in the end it was great and Stafford now has a signature pass to win the game! This will live for a long time!
I think the thug whiteandgold got what he deserves with his nats getting bombed. They should learn to not talk smack until they win a few games against a few real team. GO DAWGS!

I think we’ve established Georgia’s manhood when it comes to playing the Tide. Now maybe we can get Pat Dye to challenge our manhood before the Cocktail Party.

I really hope Marcus Washington isn’t hurt too bad, he is so much better than ellerbe in the middle. I thought he was the difference maker in this game.

Great SEC win for the Dawgs, and I am very proud of the team and coaches for putting together such a great group of young men. However, I was embarrassed for the SEC last night when the trashy Alabama fans threw trash on our team at the end of the game. Show some class, Bama… Oh, I forgot, you LIVE in Alabama, so what should I expect???

Go Dawgs! Now go whip the Rebels.

What a great win!!!! Anyone that say CMR doesn’t have spunk didn’t see him a couple of times on the sidelines. He lit up a couple of guys…in a good way. Defense played great in the 1st & 3rd qtrs. We were bringing the house in the 1st qtr and stuffing them hard. Then we shifted our routine. WHY????
Living over here in BAMMER-land, I am proudly wearing my “G” today!!! GO DAWGS!!!!

The young “O” line played exceptionally well considering the noise and pressure! Gotta love that Mareno! Truly an inspiration and sets the tone for the offense. we need to use he and Brown together. We also need to work even harder with recruiting — King Nick will have a serious impact unless we really focus on those that we really want and need.

The Dawgs should have won in regulation, but that one n’ done OT play sure was sweet! I thought our defense played very well, constantly pressuring John Parker-Lewis-Can-Lose Wilson. That’s what those Tide fans get for worshipping Saban like a false idol. I hope Knowshon keeps it up, his energy is great! Now if only our QB & Receivers can get more coordinated…

In a way I think it may have better for the team to win they way they did, in OT with the defensive stop and decisive pass play, than if they had stopped Bama and run out the clock. As BK notes above, a win like this can make a season, so the confidence and bond that emerges from nearly losing and pulling it out in grand fashion may teach this team a lot.

I disagree with your comments on Howard and Zeier.

THEY DID A FANTASTIC JOB. Scott Howard is awesome and will be a great voice of the dawgs for hopefully the next 40 years. He has a great voice and great delivery. Zeier brought emotion and insight that made it work really well. By the end of the game they worked extremely well together and i hope this is the team of the future (when Munson does hang it up for good, i’m thinking 1 more yr).

Congrats, Dawg fans. Really enjoyed the game. Georgia showed some moxie in winning this one. You guys grew up a little bit. Pulling for you guys to win so the Jax game will be big, meaningful, and exciting to watch again. Gators pulled one out. They had a little let down after the big win over the Vols. True Gators come out again next Saturday night at home against the Tigers from Alabama. Then the other Tigers come next. Go Gators. Go Dawgs. Go SEC!

3-1 is right where we hoped we would be after the Bama game. Pre-Season did any real dawg fan think , NOT HOPE, that we would be 4-0?

After the SC loss many people were ready to dump Bobo, Richt, Stafford, and others. I just don’t understand that. There is so much football left to be played and the DAWGS should be in every game down to the last drive.

Who on the remaining schedule scares you?

tech? After two weeks they were looking pretty good, but now most tech fans would settle for a winning season and bowl bid.

Auburn? This appears to be the worst Auburn team in about 15 to 20 years… it may be the worst in 25 years.

Florida? Yes, this will be a game we are underdogs, but if Ole Miss can take FL to the 4th quarter, the Dawgs can do it if we get some breaks and that bye week should help. I hope that this game is for the SEC East title (South Carolina will lose at least one more SEC game)

Kentucky? They look formidable, but we can win this game if we play well. No Disrespect to KY, this will be a tough game, but can anyone tell me we can’t win it?

Vandy? I don’t see UGA losing to Vandy 2 in a row.

Troy? This game scares me, they look like a much more formidable opponent than what we thought when we scheduled them.

TN? TN looks truly awful. There has to be a mutiny on Phil’s hands and the TN faithful cannot be happy with this coach, team, and overall direction of the program. Unfortunatley, TN usually gels just in time for the UGA game, but this looks like a better chance for a UGA win than it did before the season started.

Ole Miss?

We can beat them if we take care of business (see Kentucky)but we have to play well. Having this game at home makes me feel better.

I think if UGA continues to improve along the OL and get sharper on offense in general…we can enjoy a two loss season and maybe even challenge for the SEC title? Don’t ask me what I think of a UGA LSU matchup, I don’t like the Dawgs chances in that one. but I sure would like to see it happen.

LSU would stomp the Falcons—however, USC looked pretty good against them so we should give credit to USC for having a pretty good team and coming to Athens and beating us. That said, a couple plays make the difference in that game. The Dawgs defense looks stout as usual ( remember the folks calling for Willie’s head a couple yaers ago?) Anyway, 10-2 / 9-3 looks realistic. The Gators are human/ Auburn is bad and Tenn can be beat. Kentucky???? what the ??? they are playing well, but we get them between the hedges and will remember last year. I see a Capital One Bowl against Wisconsin. DAWGS!!!

Alabama is not a very good team YET; and you only won by 3 points in overtime… you have had better recruiting classes than Bama for the past 6 to 8 years… don’t get too big a head, you are not that much better than Bama now at your best; while Bama will be getting better and better as the recruiting classes roll in. so celebrate now while you can. the fun for the rest of you is about to end.

This was a good win for the Dawgs. The defense seemed inspired and I love Brown and Moreno running the ball. Moreno’s energy should light a fire under some of the other guys. He seems so excited just to play a kid’s game. Good gameplan by Bobo and Martinez. Did you notice the body language of the coaches and the players in the first quarter? They seemed to be motivated and even Coach Martinez was jumping around on the sidelines whenever he defense made a stop. That’s what we need to see. Emotion and positive energy. Let’s look forward to the upcoming game. Ole Miss hit some big passes against Florida. I am sure they will try to go down field against our defense so we need to work on defending the long pass. Hopefully, the offense will click well and put some points on the board. The guys must stay motivated from week to week because this conference is rough, and looking ahead might get us in trouble. We need to get past Ole Miss, and then we can worry about the trip to Knoxville. I am sure the guys won’t need motivation for the trip to Knoxville after last year’s debacle at Sanford. All in all, a good game for the team. The young pups are growing week by week. Go Dawgs!!!!

y-daddy — Georgia has a younger team than Alabama and we should be much better next year and even as this season goes along. We beat Saban at LSU and Richt has a better record at UGA than Nick had at LSU.N.S is a good coach but the hype exceeds reality. He went 12-1 and was awarded a title shot.Richt went 12-1 in 02 but didn’t get a shot at a championship. They both won their bowl game,it’s all pretty arbitrary.I’ll be happy with a 10 win season with just about everybody returning next season plus some top talent being redshited including Caleb King who will prove to be a star to play along side Moreno.

Pretty amazing for “Your daddy” to be talking smack after losing three straight to the Dawgs (and two straight in Tuscaloosa). You can speculate all you want, but what counts is what’s on the scoreboard. Saban hasn’t won anything over Georgia at Alabama yet, and he’s 2-2 against Mark Richt lifetime—not exactly Spurrieresque numbers, if you ask me. You’re counting on the future so much that you’re starting to sound like a Gamecock fan.

News flash: Most of the Georgia team that beat your Crimson Wavelet last evening returns next year, along with yet another top 10 recruiting class. And y’all have to play us in Athens. I’d bet money that the Georgia streak over Alabama continues next season, as well (that’ll be four straight, for you Alabama grads, and Reggie Ball—oops, forgot, he can’t read or count…). And after that, we don’t see Alabama again on our schedule for five years. So more power to you after that. Saban’ll be gone by the time we play y’all then, anyway.

Bill et al- I also have complained about the Audio Delay over the years. It seems no matter what radio station you tune to, the radio audio is always ahead of the TV coverage. Folks have wondered outloud for years about fixes… Here is my 2 cent

Subscribe to the “Gxtra” plan at georgiadawgs dot com. The basic/cheap plan allows you to get live Bulldawgs radio network coverage. Unlike over the air broadcasts from the local radio station, the internet feed runs BEHIND the TV broadcast ! The kicker is, if you have a TIVO/DVR box, PAUSE the TV broadcast about 10 secs or until it catches up with the online audio feed. I had my computer speakers jacked all the way up and had Howard synch’ed with the TV within 1 second or better !!

By Steve

Bill, excellent observations - let me add my $.02 worth:

The good: The really, really good - Georgia’s defense OWNED ‘Bama in the first half. I was, as Lewis Grizzard used to say, bumfuzzled. What happened to the Alabama team that was the mightiest thing on the planet? They got NADA in the first half. Hats off to CMR and the staff for a great game plan and to the Dawgs for kicking serious butt.

MIKEY MIKEY MIKEY!!!!! No more need be said.

The offense looked as good as it has all season, with Moreno giving DBs fits and Bailey dragging defenders 10-15 yards after the catch. Stafford looked very comfortable in the pocket, and although the Crimson got to him a couple of times, he shook it off and went on about his business.

The BAD - and there was a little, although not too much.

1: Chandler’s dropped passes in the second half had me throwing things at the TV and wondering if his parents were married. great grab on the last drive, though, and even though Coutu hooked the last-second FG try, it wasn’t a matter of life or death at that point. Mind you, it would have been nice to have ended it there, but things ultimately worked out.

2: And what the %$#@ was with that Montana-sized hole on Billy Joe Bob Whatsisname’s TD run to tie the game late? There wasn’t a white shirt in sight, no small feat considering that we were backed up against our end zone. Jeez, my fat, 48-year-old frame could have waddled in through there!

Coutu’s misses could have been disastrous, but s’okay, Brandon. We still love you, man!!

The airwaves:

Where does ESPN get these clowns?????

On the radio, Scott did a great job. Smooth, settled down after a minute or two, enough homer to keep me smiling. Scott’s no Munson, but Lord, who is??? Leave him be. He’ll be fine. Eric - no more caffeine before the games.

Anyway to you real Dawg fans out there who have not waiverd all year on this team, this was a great win and the team is getting better and better. I had to laugh at all the spooning by all the Ugay players in the end zone at the end of the game. Saved it on the DVR for all you flea bitten gay mutts out there.

CMR will screw the team up worse than it is. Poor play calling, dropped passes, bad defense, all the bad stuff will continue.

Enjoy 15th place ranking while it lasts (this week). You might get a win against Ole Miss but Tennessee is waiting….. Please don’t spoon in their end zones.

“Bama” Fans = Trailer Trashiest Lot on Earth!

Bar none. Calling people “qu**rs” and “f@ggits” (sic), throwing trash… incredible.

Every school has them including UGA. I thought Tennessee was one of the worst, but I had never been to Alabama. I did go to Auburn last year - and their fans were well-dressed, cordial, welcoming and had full sets of teeth in their heads. Ironic that “Bama” calls Auburn the rednecks.

I think we won this game in spite of the coaching. I have skimmed through these posts and nobody has mentioned the coaching blunders….AGAIN!

First HUGE one was not even trying for a drive, much less a 1st down when we got the ball with 2 minutes left in the half. Run the ball up the damn middle three times in a row and then basically spot AL 3 points. How freakin HUGE was that 3 points. I mean, we didn’t even make an effort to get a first down. Did none of our coaches watch Bama’s last drive against Arkansas?

We ran the toss sweep every single time to the short side of the field….Why not run it to the strong side? We even ran it to the short side with Thomas with time running out in the 4th quarter, when we needed the clock to run. Thomas was easily forced OB.

Then there was the 3rd and 14 late in the 2nd quarter. Up the middle again. This time over center for no gain. Obvious we were playing for the FG.

3rd and 1 in the 3rd quarter and for some reason we try a fullback dive up the middle. Thomas and Moreno can get 1 yard running backwards. Why try a fullback dive in the middle?

The bad play calling almost cost us this one. The game NEVER should have gone to OT. And where was Moreno the last half of the 4th quarter? This guys should be getting the ball until HE decides he doesn’t want it any more. Thomas is good, but Moreno is something special.

Again, we won this game in spite of our coaching.

it’s really pathetic to blow a 10 point lead with 6 minutes left in the game. Everyone seems to be forgfetting about that. Richt and Bobo were playing not to lose, rather than playing to win. At the end of the first and second half, instead of trying to score to secure the win, we were trying to run the clock out and win the game with our defense. It almost cost us the game. It will cost us games later this season if they dont stop.

Yeah were coming to your city.

College Game Day at Tuscaloosa. It gave us the annointing of Nick Saban as the reincarnation of Bear Bryant. It was the Nick Saban admiration society on parade. They even pointed out that there was a spot next to Gene Stalling’s statue, real man and fine coach, for the Nick Saban statue. It just about made me want to barf. Herbstreit was the only one that gave us any credit when he picked us for an upset. Courso sealed their doom when he put on the Pachyderm head.

The only coaching I want to complain about is the inability of our tight ends, read Chandler, to catch the ball. Have him pretend it is one of those new Heniken mini kegs and we should be alright.

Please guys don’t do the pile on in the endzone. Mikey is not that large and I want him playing the rest of the season. Just act like you have done it before. Watch old clips of Herschel, just handed the ball to the nearest ref and headed to the bench.

Bama fans, typically classless behavior by throwing things at our players and fans. You lost get over it. Show some class as I did at the UGA-USC game and congradulate some fans. It is only a game. Sure it is more fun when your team wins, but there are a lot more important things in life than football. This just gives us a break from the serious things going on everyday in our lives.

I think Ole Miss will throw everything at us including a 1957 kitchen sink. I should be back home on the banks of the Savannah by then and plan to attend. I do not know my ticket status as we speak, but with several relatives and friends, I should be okay. Ole Miss may have lost to UF but they looked tough doing it and should have nothing to be ashamed of their play.

Coach keep the practices closed. It seemed to give the team more focus.

We love Coach Willie so much we named a bedroom community of Augusta named after him. He just needs to pronounce his name a little differently. It is Mart-nez. The I is silent. I will talk to some friends of mine and maybe we can have him in a car for the Christmas parade. That would be a hoot. We would give him the keys to the city, but we never lock the doors anyway.

Great win and let’s show the team some love when they run on the field next Saturday.

Eating Mastadon ribs were a lot better than eating that old Crow after the USC game.

I’d like to see closed practices more often or always.

I think it helped keep the wraps on some injuries like haverkamp and may have helped the dawgs. If the other team does not realize ahead of time which OL to pick on due to injuries or what have you, they don’t have time to plan a game around our vulnerabilities.

What do you all think? Am I on track here? Plus, the whole thing of what kind of plays we are working on, that should be secret too.

As a Dawg fan, I hate reading these rambling posts of other Dawg fans rubbing this loss in the Bama fan’s faces with misspelled words everywhere. If you can’t spell, PLEASE DON’T POST HERE!

Bama has 12 national championships strung out over the 20th century won with 5 different head coaches. georgia has had 1 decent coach and 1 national championship, because of the only decent player georgia has ever had; hershal walker. without walker, you would be ole miss. lol

1st- Both schools have a tradition of excellence in football so trying put someone down with inaccurate information only makes you look ignorant. 2nd- Alabama has been voted # 1 in at least one poll a total of 16 times but only 4 of those were consensus National Championships i.e. 1992, 1979, 1961, and 1925. The 78, 73, 65, 64, 34, and 26 NC’s were split championships with the 73 NC not being deserved as Bama lost to ND in the Sugar Bowl. 3rd- Georgia has been voted # 1 a total of 5 times on at least one poll with two of these being Consensus NC i.e. 1942 and 1980. 4th- AL is 7th all time in victories while GA is 11th. 5th- AL is # 1 in SEC Championships while GA is 3rd.

I know you are upset that Bama lost to us this past Saturday but you have a very good team that will only get better. You have a coach who has proven he can rebuild programs and take them to NC’s. IMO if Coach Saban stays at Alabama you will be back in the SEC championship game very soon. I have always had respect for Bama because of Coach Bryant and the way he carried himself with respect and humility.

ESPN is overproducing football games. I don’t need Debra Norville or some other virtual nobody alumnus introducing the players. I don’t need tailgating segements during the game, and I sure as he11 do not want an interruption to watch a pitcher on a yankee baseball team conclude a no-hitter. We get 8 months of baseball, and that is plenty. ESPN needs nothing fancy, just show every play of the game, with no lost time to fluff or commercials. There is plenty of time for fluff before the game, at halftime, and after the game.

Okay, here comes the daily dose of realism from Decatur Dawg. First, what a game! We actually had fire, we had passion, and I was asking for it, and called them out, but they came through.

Now, here are some questions we handled a monumental task by going into hostile territory and winning, but, can we handle the “big head” syndrome we get after a big win(i.e. see Alabama after they beat Ark) We have Tennessee in Knoxville the week after, and Ole Miss gave Florida all they could handle, so this will be the ultimate test. We sure have the talent, but we need to be more consistant.

We have passed the first part of the test after the SC loss put us in a must win position, can we move forward?

I sure hope so.

Go Dawgs!

Beautiful pass Stafford. Right on the money. Why don’t we run Mikey down field more on the sideline routes? Can somebody tell me that? I liked the article on Moreno and the opponents hating his attitude and playing style. Keep it up Knowshon. Things are looking good still so here’s to a great win.

Cuz in the Midwest…Say what you want about Nick Saban but if this weekend was not an example that he will make BAMA a better team, then you dont pay much attention to football. This is a team coming off a 6-7 season and he has them fighting until the end against good teams. With Shula at the helm, OT would not have happened. UGA would have had the game won at the half. Saban is recruiting better and he is coaching up lesser talent and taking a team like UGA, who has recruited lights out for the last 6 years to OT. I will happily take that. As for our fans, I do not condone the student throwing things at the UGA team. At the same time, I was at the UGA-UT game several years ago (Claussen one arm tied behind his back game) and I saw things being thrown on the UT team entering the locker room before the game and at the end…AND…UGA won! What happened in Tuscaloosa will happen anywhere and it is unfortunate. The comments I have heard from most UGA fans is that they all had a great time in Tuscaloosa! If you were not there, I would suggest you not judge an entire fan base based on the actions of few.

On that note, congrats to UGA on the win on the road. It was big for you guys and should propel you on to another good season. You guys should be Ole Miss on Sat by 30. I think BAMA can still salvage a good season with 8-9 wins. This weekend against FSU will be a good test but there will be A LOT of BAMA fans down there in Jax. LSU will likely kill us but they will likely kill every team they play. Good luck the rest of the way.

High and mighty are we mutts? You squeeked by an extremely average Bammer squad and now you’re making room in the ole trophy case for the ADT Trophy. Simply amazing to say the least. Granted, we didn’t play well again against UVA…but we didn’t play that bad either. We’re still going to have a program defining beatdown over you…so i’m not too concerned about what happens until then. You still have humiliating defeats to come at the hands of UK, VU, UF, UT, the BARN, and of course Tech that will register bigtime on the ole “Richt”er scale.

White and Gold. Amazing how your suck-a* Bumble Bees lose, to Virginia, who lost to freaking Wyoming!, and you still run your mouth. WhiteAndGold, It is a long season ahead with a string of tough SEC matchups along the way. You talk about how average Alabama is. Night games in the SEC are the toughest environment on the planet to play in. Granted it wasn’t 50,000 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The ACC is miserable. Virginia just coming off a close win over North Carolina who looked pitiful against South Florida. Got whipped by Wyoming and also beat Duke. Pretty solid football team. Jealously and disappointment are obvious in your statements. And yes you are concerned and praying that Georgia loses to make yourself feel better about being mediocre. So tell me how lucky Georgia is and how they don’t beat teams that are good or how you make more money than me. You better start worrying about Clemson and not running your mouth on Georgia blogs. How could you even be here, wasting your time talking trash, after the Gnats got handled by UVA?? I don’t get it. Weren’t you demoralized enough after getting gut-stomped by Boston College on your home field? Think you guys will be able to get by Army? Hmmm… Doesn’t look good. VT? They are going to beat you to death. Dawgs at Bees? Georgia is gonna have you on your a* like a fat, pimply Tech skank-ho after an Engineer sponsored kegger.

So go ahead and make fun of us for beating ND and Samford, but in reality ya’ll havent done much better. Ya’ll don’t find it alarming that Ole P** scored 24 points on a team you have only beaten like once in like 30 years?
The fact is, UGAy is the laughing stock of college football. Nobody takes you seriously. Our 15 mins of fame against ND is more that you’ll ever get. You suck really, really bad and its only a matter of time before you and the rest od redneck nation is exposed again.

This win was big for the Dawgs, but let me make this clear, The Georgia Bulldogs will never win a National Title under Richt. His game managment skills are horrible and his play calling is fair at best. He is also flawed by the fact that Georgia recruits are decent players with your typical 5 star players in Stafford and Moreno, but Florida gets 5 to 6 5 star players a recruiting class. Lsu as well. Saturday I watched a guy in Moreno rip Alabama apart on a few consecutive plays and on a third a one Bobo and Richt call a dive by the fullback Sutherland. Its play calling like that that has me questioning the coaching of Georgia. I can not to this day understand why no one has ever taught Stafford not to throw of his back foot. He gets in trouble everytime he does that it just so happens that his arm strength bails him out sometimes. Georgia better hire a recruiter who can go down to south florida and get some of those quick athletes like shut down corners and wide recievers who can beat press coverages. Their offense line is set for a few years barring injury, but they still need to go after a few to start grooming them. Finally we need a David Pollack type guy on the defensive line. I think our lineman are average, but we need a threat coming off the end.If Trip Chandler is starting at TE versus Ole Miss that will also tell you a lot about the coaching. Figgins caught a touchdown against O State and I havent heard froom him since then. Let Chandler watch and realize that he has to work to keep his position. Go Dawgs!

WhiteandGold,

If Ga is the laughing stock of college football, where does that rank the supposed power house that was GA Tech. Ps: What happened to that stout Defense I read so much about? Your boys are a tremendous let down. And it’s not bc they are less athletic than any other team. It’s merely the culture of losing that has surrounded Tech of late. Until that changes, I guess Dawg fans can expect little brother syndromes such as yourself knocking our big road wins in an effort to make your devastating losses seem less significant.

The Dawgs looked great saturday, but could have put the game away several times. But an impressive win on the road with such a young bunch nonethelses. It was evident from the first drive we were the better prepared team. My only worry is that we are notorious for coming out flat as all get out the week after a big win. If we show up with the same intesity as last week Ole MIss, we should come out with a W.

By robdawg06

South Carolina ain’t USC. They are SC. USC is the perennial powerhouse Trojans from California.

Tripp Chandler should only play on blocking downs. Put a tight end with some hands in there on the passing downs. Chandler couldn’t catch a cold in December.

Stafford throws the ball to spots a lot where the receivers are going before they get there. This will hurt him (if they run the wrong routes) against Fla,Kentucky, etc. and almost cost us the Bama game with his interception.

Did anyone else watching ESPN notice the partiality to Bama by the announcers ? Talk about being homers…

September 24, 2007 12:06 PM | Link to this

gdawgfan, first, i don’t agree that uga will NEVER win a national title under Richt. I certainly don’t agree that his game managment skills are horrible. Playcalling will always be questionable when something doesn’twork out. If the bama corner intercepts the ball saturday to end the game, was it then a bad call? Richt is winning at close to an 80% clip so to call his game managment horrible is ridiculous. Does he make mistakes at times, yes, though he continues to get better. I’m sure the coaching staff gets on Stafford about the back foot, its a HABIT, and it will take time to correct, remember, he is four games into his SOPHOMORE year. As far as hiring a recruiter to go into FL, it is not that simple. You have three perennial top 10 teams that have and will continue to take the bulk of the top talent in FL. The simple fact is we have to continue to shut off the borders to GA and then poach in other states as we have during the Richt era. FL has and will continue to have an advantage in recruiting due to its homebase recruiting in FL. LSU too will continue to be very strong due to its foothold in Texas. This makes what Richt has done in his first six years all the more exceptional, 3 championship games in six years. The biggest problem the last two years is quite simply, the rash of injuries, transfers, and bad behavior in the o-line the led to losing atleast 5 of them. Also, it hurts this years team to lose Oliver and Johnson. With those two guys back, you go from an average defense to probably the best defense in the conference behind LSU. Oliver would have allowed you to lockdown the go-to reciever and Johnson certainly would have pestered the quarterback and made the other end much more effective as well. As far as national titles, the simple fact is they are more luck than anything, having to do more with where you start in preseason polls, when you lose, and how your opponents play when out of conference games are scheduled years in advance. If there was a playoff system in place and we performed poorly year after year than I might agree with you. But I suspect, given playoffs we would have fared quite well and most likely would have been involved in a 16 team playoff 4 out of MR’s six years. Given everything, I don’t think you can’t be satisfied with the 07 team thus far. I felt like given the offensive line, a still young Stafford, and key losses on defense, 8-4 was realistic. I am cautiously optimistic that we may be able to do a game better than that. As long as the national title is as muck luck as anything, I will continue to place the most value on how we perform in the SEC.

Hey Jumbo - you Monday morning armchair coaches always amuse me. Can’t enjoy a big win without throwing in your 2 cents (overpriced) analysis of play-calling and coaching. I have always appreciated CMR’s response to your type of posting - most fans don’t know what we know and don’t see the “big picture”. Sure, running to the weak side looks questionable to the common fan. But have you ever stopped to consider that maybe, just maybe that play was called at the line of scrimmage to run AWAY FROM a particular player or defensive strength? Of course you haven’t. You’re just a SORE WINNER, looking for something to gripe about. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you know more about the game than you really do. 23-3 on the road? well dawg fans as much as it pains me to say this, that was a great win against a pretty solid team Saturday night. i am, and i always will be a proud Tech fan til the day i die. one thing i cant take away from a team like UGA is the preparation and the coaching abilities of CMR. you guys went into a hostile enviroment, and on the opening drive ran the ball down Bama’s throat. that took guts especially in a place where you havent had much success. Stafford looked pretty poised throughout the game and he bounced back from the two interceptions. Tech hasnt played well lately and we have Clemson to worry about this week. but i will remain optimistic for the remainder of the season. wel will meet in November and we will be ready.

until then my hats go off to you guys for that win, just dont get too big to played hard against Miss.

So mutts let me get this straight. cooter 11, from Seattle? Now that would be a strech!…..Kalamazoo, they did try that play but Stafford had to audible out because the WRs lined up in the wrong positions……Bill, another good jab at Stafford but have you ever though about what would happen if our receivers caught the ball. Put into context, if that were happening maybe those passes wouldn’t be off a fraction because Stafford could count on his receivers being where they should be. Figgins played but they never called his number. After reading what Eason had to say about his coaching move, I’m now convinced that CMR has to make a hard decision at that coaching position.

Funny how most of you guys acting 10 years old blogging with White and Gold have told him on more than once occasion to leave this blog and when I tip my hat to him and call you guys stupid for eating out of his hands, you tell me it’s tradition to rant with GT fans on Dawg blogs. Gee, never heard of that tradition before. Sounds like a convenient excuse for the idiots that keep arguing with White and Gold.

For the blogger that said that I am a SORE WINNER, I submit to you that you couldn’t be further from the truth. My point was that we should not have put ourselves in a position Saturday to be in overtime. We rolled over and died at the end of the 1st half. Was there something that I didn’t see from watching it on TV? They still had 11 defenders out there as they had the whole game but we decided to run off tackle 3 TIMES IN A ROW! Not even an attempt to get a 1st down and run the clock out. Nevermind that we absolutely do not have a 2 minute offense, we didn’t even try for a 1st down.

Also, running to the weak side is certain situations is fine, but we did it EVERY SINGLE TIME! There was no defensive alignment that Bobo saw BEFORE he called those plays. Running to the short side when we need to stay in bounds is just bad play calling. Running up the middle on 3rd and 14 is settling for the FG and not even trying for a 1st down and bad play calling. Fullback dive on 3rd and 2 into the meat of the line is bad play calling.

As someone mentioned earlier, we were playing not to lose. We weren’t playing to put the game away late.

I am as thrilled as anyone that we won this game, but we should not have been in a position to get into overtime.

Im not naive. I know we haven’t played good football in several weeks, but there is an explanation for it. First Tashard has been hurt. When you take a Heisman front runner out of any offense, it will suffer more than likely. Two, injuries all the way around have handicapped out team. Once everyone gets healthy again, watch out!

It’s still a free post so anyone can post what they want but I really don’t understand why anyone is giving White and whatever the time of day. Lets talk about ‘Old Miss, or the “One and Done”. Just a question and suggestion.

Jumbo - Like I said, 23-3 on the road. 3-1 this young season with what is probably the youngest team in the conference, if not the nation. CMR & staff winning at close to an 80% clip. You can pick the play-calling apart all you like. Still, not a very shabby resume if you ask me. So, is your glass still half empty??

CQ I am not arguing about our PAST record on the road. 23-3 is damn impressive, but give me a break dude. Richt’s play calling was always suspect and that is part of the reason he handed it over to Bobo, but you can’t sit here and tell me that you were satisfied with the play calling Saturday night. You can’t tell me as a Dog fan, that you weren’t having a heart attack Saturday night and you can’t tell me as a Dog fan that you were satisfied with rolling over and playing dead with 2 minutes to play in the 1st half.

I have been a Dog fan for most of my 48 years and there are few Dog fans I know as loyal as me, but I don’t subscribe to what we’ve done in the past. I don’t lean on our one National Championship as proof of a successful program and I couldn’t care a less what CMR did last year, the year before that or the year before that. Those season’s are over. It’s about the here and now and I still remain frustrated, skeptical and worried about our play calling and I’ll bet you I am not alone.

So, please don’t accuse me of not being a loyal fan because I want to see what Richt calls the “best QB I have ever coached” throw the ball on 3rd and long or run a 2 minute offense or not run a toss sweep to the weak side when we need to keep the ball inbounds.

I have earned my right as a 40+ year Dog fan to question offensive calls. All I am saying is the win was sweet, but the play calling put our players in a tough position when we probably could have put this game away early.

Can anyone give me Stafford’s address, I don’t know it. While you’re at it can you give me his phone number, I don’t know it either. Can you tell me anything about Stafford, I just don’t know.

For those of you still critical of the play calling, I can’t understand why you think that you could do a better job. Our game plan should consist of identifying and exploiting the weaknesses in the opponent’s offense (and defense). Some calls work, some do not. I could see a good mix of pass and run. I saw some errant throws by Stafford and some very good throws. Our time of possession was very impressive.

I wonder if people think that our DAWGS are so superior that teams like Alabama are just going to roll and we will kill them on their field. They are a quality SEC team that took us to the wire and thanks to the coolness of our coaches and players, the DAWGS found a way to win a tough game.

Thanks coaches and players-I’m very proud to be a DAWG. Keep up the good work.

PS-The tight end position looks very good for the future-and I mean Figgins, not Chandler.

Jumbo, Since you have appointed yourself the chief grammar inspector, I’d like point out the following infraction, “Funny how most of you guys acting 10 years old blogging with White and Gold have told him on more than once occasion to leave this blog and when I tip my hat to him and call you guys stupid for eating out of his hands, you tell me it’s tradition to rant with GT fans on Dawg blogs.”

In addition to being the chief grammar inspector, I think UGA should hire you as the new offensive coordinator since you clearly know more about play calling than Bobo and Richt combined.

Kalamazoo, I forgot, that was the same play where Stafford put the ball into what should have been Henderson’s hands but ended up bouncing off his shoulder pads. Same exact play.

Jumbo - Certainly you are entitled to question/2nd guess all you like. (BTW, I’ve got you by a year). But the difference between us is this - I contend that the past does count, at least the recent past. CMR and crew have done a phenomenal job, IMO, building a program based upon respect and character and THEY deserve a break. You know we really had some pretty good success running betweent the tackles on Sat. The fact that Southerland (who is probably the best short-yardage guy on the team) wasn’t able to convert that 3rd & 2 is just part of the game. If he HAD, we wouldn’t be talking about it. The bottom line is this - they will NEVER, EVER call a game just like I would or just like you would, but I trust them to call the game in such a manner as to keep us in it and give us a chance to win. Again, remember the youth on this team. Remember Bobo’s youth in his capacity as OC. Dude, (I prefer Bro) question all you like, but for cryin out loud, don’t overlook all the positive things that have been done with the progam since CMR arrived on the scene. Let’s celebrate a big win, on the road, and go get ready to whip some UM butt!! GO DAWGS!!

I thought the playcalling was pretty good. On the 3rd and 1 when they gave it to fullback it has worked in the past MANY times. On 3rd and 14 there are not many plays in the playbook for that. To go for it all in OT was totally unexpected. I guess you need to beat the #16 team on the road by 30 points for it to be good playcalling. It is always easy to 2nd guess. As far as playing in a NC it takes skill and a lot of luck. Nobody gets to see FL kill Ohio St if USC can beat UCLA the last week of the season. Mark Richt is a good coach and Bobo has done a good job of playcalling. It’s a young group and sometimes you need to keep it simple the first 1/2 of the season

CQ Agreed Bro! Although I still hated the play calling with 2 minutes left in the 1st half! ;)

Good post CQ

I didn’t feel good about that particular Southerland run when they lined up-not a bad call-short yardage for a back that has been a bull and has given us a lot. As I said on my previous post, not every play works.

I like Mark Richt and what he has done for our program. All he has to do for national accolades is continue doing what he is doing. I don’t really think that he cares, however, about the publicity. He seems to be at home with the personal goals he has set for himself and gets a lot of satisfaction working with the young men that come his way. Let’s keep in focus what is important.

See you in athens. We need to get loud. There is no way we can look past Ole Miss. This team is talented enough to beat anyone in the league but also inexperienced enough to lose to anyone. It was a beautiful win and will go down as one of the top 5 games in my memory

WhiteandGold

You said it correctly. Beating Ga would be a program defining moment for GT, WHY??, because we are that good and that much better than you and you will always measure yourself against the Big Dawgs!!

I dont believe anyone at Tech will measure ourselves to you just because we cannt sell out our stadium to an additional 50 k drunk a$$ trailer trash rednecks. At least the people that show up to our games actually went to school at Tech and don’t live in some trailer park off of HWY 316.

Another issue in play calling, specifically with the offensive line play, is who’s beating who on a regular basis. They talk about this when the D is on the field and Bobo gets the word. If they need 2 yards, that’s where they go.

Point is, that’s determined on the field, during the game.

Maybe we could get the coach from Dodgeball to throw the wrenches at the recievers to motivate them to catch the ball. Sounds like a plan.

whiteandgold, most Tech fans are aware that their football program is not up to par with the Dawgs football program. I actually pull for Tech to win each week until we play each other. Its just the idiots like whiteandgold with an unranked 2-2 Tech team talking smack here with a 15th ranked 2-1 SEC powerhouse that amazes me. I don’t even waste my time going to the Tech blogs to bash them. It goes without need of saying how bad Tech’s football team is. I was hoping Tech would go undefeated until they played us so when we beat Tech it would move us up in the rankings… Here’s your probable score for the game this year Tech fans : Dawgs 31 Bees 13 I digress…

SEC powerhouse?!!!! HAHAHAHAH…get off the f’ing drugs buddy. Don’t confuse yourself with LSU or Florida. You’re a middle of the road ACC team at best.

WhiteAndGold,

Listen man, I know you’re just on here posting to get a rise out of us dawg fans. And for the most part, you’ve been successful, congratulations for that.

But seriously, it’s getting out of hand. I’m not saying UGA will beat Tech when we play this year, no one knows for sure, that’s why the games are played. But I do know this much…I sure as H@ll wouldn’t be on here talking smack after losing two in a row, especially when the last one came at the hands of UVA.

Now, if you want to put together a rational explanation of why you think Tech will beat us this year, I’m sure all of the dawg fans on this blog will be happy to read your post and have a logical discussion about it…but until then, please, talk about your losses on your own blog and let us talk about our wins on ours.

I am seriously concerned with the secondary. I know we havent played a team with a average or okay QB to date. But, looking ahead at Tennessee and Kentucky it looks like a long, long day for our defense with those two offense throwing for around 300 a game against Cal and UF for UT, and Kentucky against everyone they have played for just about a year now including us in ‘06.

I know neither UK or UT has much, if any defense. But it looks like we are in the same boat, and we will need to score 50 just to beat either of them by the looks of things.

Munson’s Diaper,

So by that definition, what is Alabama since 1977 (the last 30 years) one decent season when you won the national title and an SEC title here and there.

If UGA is Ole Miss the last 15 years, what is Alabama during that stretch? A team with fewer wins, fewer SEC titles, fewer bowl wins, fewer top 10 and top 25 finishes and a team that has lost the head to head matchup the last several times they have played.

Jumob,

I gotta totally disagree with you about the coaching and playcalling.

It was a pretty good playcall when Chandler dropped the 20 yard pass with nobody around him. Getting a TE that open is either great play calling or horrible defense or a combo.

It wasn’t bad coaching or playcalling on the bad no call on pass interference against Demiko Goodman for a 20 yard gain or 10 yard and first down if that penalty is actually called.

It wasn’t bad coaching or playcalling when Stafford threw the two picks or let the clock run down and called a time out we didn’t have and THEN we get a false start for 1st and 20 to go when we were in scoring position.

I think this UGA team looked exceptionally well prepared and the play calling was very good. If our players execute a little better, we score 30+ in regulation. I’m not talking about being “perfect”, but just need to stop doing dumb things and we score 30 to beat em 30-20.

The players have to execute better in those situations in my opinion.
