Which teams will show up?

In talking with other UGA fans this week about Saturday’s game against the Crimson Tide, the one constant has been that none of them had a sure feel for how the game will go.

All of their assessments were preceded by a lot of ifs. If Georgia can run against Alabama like Arkansas did … (of course, we don’t have the Razorbacks’ offensive line, not to mention Darren McFadden). Or if Georgia can get its long passing game going against Nick Saban’s man coverage (and IF our receivers hold on to the ball). And so on.

But the basic comment most Dawg fans have made is that it depends on WHICH Georgia team shows up … the one that plays up to its capabilities or the one we saw in the South Carolina game and the first quarter against Western Carolina.

Interestingly, I’ve found the same lack of certainty among Bama fans. They feel good about the game if the team that got off to a fast start against Arkansas shows up. But if Bama plays like it did in the second half against the Razorbacks …

The oddsmakers have installed the Tide as the favorite, but only by a field goal. Even they don’t have a strong feeling about the outcome of this game.

History is against the Dawgs since Georgia has won only one time out of seven visits to Tuscaloosa. (A little homecooking by officials played a part in a couple of those.) But that lone Georgia win was the last time we were there, in 2002, when fans (and UGA alum Pat Dye) were similarly unsure about what to expect from the Bulldogs.

And recent history (late last season) shows that the Dawgs are capable of beating anyone when least expected. Most observers feel Georgia has more talent and speed while Bama has a more confident and experienced team. But it’s a team coming off an emotional and bruising come-from-behind win.

This is just the kind of matchup that makes college football great.

Go Dawgs!

Bill, Reading all of the coach talk this week sounds like we are looking to “open” things up. Throw the ball down the field for a change. I don’t think the screens will cut it this week. I like our chances. Sounds like the guys are getting up for this game. Should be a great one. I hope they play like they are capable of playing. If they do we win hands down.

dogs are done. 1) CMR won’t be out coaching anybody. 2) if it comes down to clock management we KNOW CMR will fail that test as he has done time and again. 3) hey, stafford CAN’T accurately throw a deep ball, so who cares if we take more shots, he has been horrible on the deep passes so far 4) CMR and his rotating nonsense-leave Moreno in and leave 3 or 4 WRs in most of the game. and don’t have freshman WRs in there in the final moments if we’re trying to pull out a victory 5) when our special teams gives bama the ball at the 40 every drive, like they did for western carolina, it’s not going to help our D. 6) we don’t have it this year, we’re lucky we’ve played 2 of the worst teams in America to get our wins, unfortunately this isn’t one of the worst. dogs will get clobbered.

Know which games you’re referencing on the ‘home-cooking’, but please do not ever go the route of complaining about officiating. It hints of the woulda, coulda, shoulda that is so prevalent on the insect blogs. If you play better, you win. Simple as that. No excuses necessary.

Bama will be in trouble if UGA gives it to Moreno, gives it to Southerland in short yardage situations and throws it to Mo Mass. And with Couto we will have the edge.

Yep, right on. Which team will show up. To date, the team this year is the laziest I can remember since I began watching the Bulldogs in 1959. I’d be ashamed to be as lazy as this team has been thus far.If the massive attitude adjustment occurs, they’ll be fine. I just wonder if this adjustment CAN occur. Prove me wrong guys. It’s time to man up. I basically agree with Big Dave above. Again, prove me & Big Dave wrong. I really wonder how the remainder of the season will go with a bad result Saturday evening. The sad thing, having so-o-o much pressure upon this game was so unecessary. If the guys had played with intensity and focus, they’d easily defeated S.Carolina. A LOT of us felt the game against ‘Bama would be tough, and that a good effort and win against S.Carolina was required. Sadly, that effort did not materialize. Now, their backs are to the wall, and it’s not even October yet. At the same time I’ll be watching and cheering from a distance. Let’s get it done ‘Dogs!!

Dawg Fans, I like Coach Richt, but I agree w/Big Dave & C. Powell. In the CMR era, he has not learned from… 1) Clock Management - need I say more.
2) WR Drops - it kills a QB’s confidence. Think about how long we’ve been dealing with this issue. (Terrence Edwards, Fred Gibson, Reggie Brown, Martrez Milner all had critical drops). 3) Too much rotation at the skill positions (WR & RB). How can these kids get into a groove? Our best players are standing on the sidelines during critical situations. 4) Lack of big play/strike fast capability. 5) Playing to the level of our competition and not putting teams away when we have the chance. We’ve got the talent, but National Championship teams do these things.

I hope the team that won those last 3 games from last season shows up. GO DAWGS!

Everything seems to be going against the DAWGS, but we will win this game! Keys to the game 1)Test Bama deep at least 2 times per half(Bailey/Goodman) 2) Give Moreno the freaking ball! 3) DEFENSE- Play loose and force some turnovers!

I want to see the big plays. 70 yard TD pass. 60 yards TD run. We seem to have been lacking those these past few years. There is nothing wrong with making the highlight reels and winning big. Nothing. Why can’t we have the WR spring down the sideline, or the back hit the hole and be gone?

Big Dave! I totally concur with your thoughts. Especially with the choice of players in the game at certain crucial times of the game. Here is a question for you all: Someone please tell me why we have a 6-1, 225, 4.4 guy lining up at DE, and a 6-4, 260 guy lining up at LB. Both were very highly recruited, and both still have not reached potential. If Brandon Miller is supposedly fast enough to play LB, then with his size and speed for the position, wouldn’t it make sense to have him at DE? And Howard actually does a good job for what he is asked to do, with his speed and size, his skills would be better placed at LB. Why are we so hell-bent on making this thing work?

M-Dawg, yeah that playing to the level of our competition kills us. SC was a perfect example. Richt is basically new to the HC position per se. I believe his clock management will get better when he starts to focus on it. And I hope he starts soon. Every second counts. Ask Arkansas.

UGA to fire entire coaching staff and replace them with AJC bloggers.

Citing their keen ability to pick apart opposing defenses on a computer keyboard, Damon Evans has announced the hiring of several AJC bloggers to replace the current UGA coaching staff.

This comes after previous head coach Mark Richt accumulated an embarassing 63-18 record in just over 6 seasons at Georgia. A mere two of those seasons resulted in SEC championships, something Daman Evans says is unacceptable. “I spend alot of time on AJC blogs,” says Evans. “Those bloggers know their stuff and I feel this is a good move for this program.”

It remains to be seen how this revolutionary approach will affect the rest of college football. Calls to Florida and LSU were not returned. A spokesman for Western Carolina said, “We would consider hiring internet bloggers for coaching positions. Why the hell not?”

Georgia wins. I don’t know if some of you are posing as Georgia fans or what, but I have no idea why everyone is so down on this year’s team. We knew what the deal was going into this year. Its a young team. They weren’t going to win every single game. If you thought they were you probably need to stop smoking crack. South Carolina is a good team. They almost beat the national champions last year. Its not like we lost ot Appy State or something. This team needs to improve and with good coaching it will. I look forward to what the future brings, starting with tomorrow night.

Three reasons UGA wins !!!! 1.—- Richt teams on the road in big SEC games 2.—— Bama is coming off a huge emotional win over Arkansas, and its tough to get up again a week later 3.——- Can run on Bama’s defense, which will open up the pass, and Stafford cannot and will not be off like he was against SC. All week I have been worried that the Dawgs would get hammered by Bama. However, after looking more at what Bama has done (blown a 21 point lead, etc.)I am feeling better about Saturday night. I think our defense will be ok. The big question is can our offense move the ball through the air and on the ground. I hope this week the coaches have their attention and the blocking schemes are working well. If so, Moreno, Brown and Stafford could have a big night! Go Dawgs!

What the hell kind of fan predicts a loss for their team? I give our team a fighting chance or more than a fighting chance against anybody we face. Period. No doubts. Let’s make this Saban’s first big loss since coming to Bama. Bama was 6-6 last year and they haven’t added a whole lot since then. We lost a 4 pointer to a team that played lights out when we played absolutely horrible. You play 60 minutes, which our guys will do tomorrow night. Damn, it can’t get here fast enough.

Cuz, hope everything is going as well as it can. We are still praying for your daughter and family.

With absolutely certainty I can tell you two things about Saturday’s game in Tuscaloosa 1. I can guarantee the score before the game starts: 0 to 0 2. I can guarantee the winner: the team that scores the most Other than that, it’s all up for grabs. UGA is definitely faster, has more depth, has had better recruiting for a while. UA seems to have more heart and wants to win more right now. Coaches do matter but don’t get to play the game. If this becomes a dog fight, the elephants can’t win, if we continue our lack luster performance the dawgs can’t win. I love my DAWGS but….UA 24/ UGA 21

Isn’t life a stitch! love all these people jumping all over Stafford about everything. How many people know how much he’s been held back in ‘07? The photo essay points out the difference in our running game’s yardage pick up because he hasn’t been called on by the Coaches to run. He’s missed some passes but how often has he been allowed to go deep? That’s no different than blocking and tacking, if you don’t do very much you do tend to make mistakes. We pull the upset and win, great, I think we will because the playbook is open, the young line has to stand alone and do their job and the head games will be between Stafford and Saban. I hope Bobo gives him the freedom to be the QB and call the audibles when he sees then. He’ll make a mistake but he’ll also be able to use his talent. people are asking which Ga. team will show up, IMO, if the team that shows up is bothered by facing a 2nd and 10 it won’t matter how hard they try. Dawgs 30-‘Bamma 21. Don’t forget that JPW threw the winning TD but he also had a fumble and two picks. I’ll take our QB any time any place.

Gdawg in Kali, Cuz, Buck, Alt….man I don’t really know how to feel about this one. My bubble was burst when we lost to SC. A lot of my boys at work feel the same way. NONE of us are confident about this game seeing the way we’ve played up to now. And bama seems to be on a roll, which, could hurt them, cause nobody, including them, knows how good they really are. I grew up watching bama cuz we lived right on the line and my dad respected the Bear. So, I can’t hate them, just like I don’t hate Auburn. Now, if f$cking Saban beats us, then I’ll start hating them regardless. I know it’s gonna be a great game. I work with a bama fan who thinks that everything is right with the world now. Is that what every bama fan thinks? If you win the NC this year, I promise you I’ll come on here and eat crow. If you beat us Sat I’ll do the same thing. Bama has great tradition, and I hope that you get back to that to challenge the west, but dam, we’re only 3 games in, and all of your fans have got you playing the Colts in the Superbowl this year! The dawgs lost to a team that they overlooked and is now number twelve in the country and is going to fare much better against LSU than everyone thinks!

Why is everyone so down on them? They have all the weapons! Their only weakness is offensive line! And it just so happens that defensive line is the Tides biggest weakness! This game sets up well for the dawgs

And furthermore this Tide team that everyone is so afraid of is so good that they fired their coach last year!

Im tired of this fairweather BS from dawg fans! The SEC is the toughest conference in college football! Every game is going to be a war! We have a great coaching staff and awesome players! Now back off and let them do what they know how to do!

Write it down the dawgs will win tommorrow nite! And all of the doubters will be shaking their heads!

And when it happens Im sure all the fairweather fans will fill these blogs about how the only other game we might lose this year will be to Fla! And the dawgs will be BCS bound! Its just ridiculous! Just support the team! They are all going to try to win every single game with everything they have and thats all we can ask!!!!!

The fact is Ugahas beaten two POOR football teams and lost to an average team. Based on performace in the first 3 games alone, we have the worst team that I have seen Georgia field in the Richt era. If ‘Bama beats the Dawgs, dont’ be surprised. They are beating a pretty bad Georgia team. I’m all for the Dawgs Dawgs, but I am realistic and the facts are the facts.

If we can get Stafford out of our Tickle Pile maybe he can focus on the game.

We haven’t defeated a quality team yet, and lost to a very average team that wasn’t ranked. Yeah - we be bad.

Bow-Wow

Worried he11. I think we got them just where we want them. The only way we lose this game is if that pencil waving Courso picks us to win. In my humble opinion, I am positive we are a better team than Arkansas. And they took them to the wire.

Surgery at the Mayo for my daugther was a sucess. With her new knee brace she is walking like she never has before. Tears when I saw the pride in her eyes. Now this is what life is about. Not a bunch of kids playing a kids game. Remember what is important in life. I do.

Cuz, That SNL reference is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day! “The bed is on my foot! The bed is on my foot!” Enjoy the game in the home of the Golden Whistlepigs! I am sure those Big “Ten” jokers will all get a big thrill out of having a real Southern Man in their midst. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Great news (and timing) Cuz!!

I was beginning to wonder if these children on this blog would ever grow up and get a life. But it takes a child of courage and the will to overcome to lift our spirits and put life into perspective! The words in your 10:21 post were what I’ve been wanting to see for weeks. It’s a shame we have to weed through the wanna-bees’ continuous crap to find REAL context from REAL warriors.

God bless you and your daughter, Cuz. You both have been in my prayers and now I can sleep a little easier tonight. Oh BTW, Dawgs win 24-13!

First, Neyland: I, for one am glad to see you have decided to stay online. I was a little concerned about yesterday’s blog, is it always that disturbing? Please, everyone refrain from the politics, next we will be talking religion….

Next, why does it take so long for these posts to appear? I don’t have all damn night to try and make a point about a football game.

I’m a GT fan and proud of it but am embarassed by the hateful comments posted here by “alleged” GT fans. I’m also a college football fan which is why I read this and a dozen other football blogs in addition to the GT blogs. Some observations:

  1. Neither GT nor UGA has shown any signs of greatness this year. Some talent, yes, greatness, no.

  2. Both Richt and Gailey are decent coaches but nobody will mistake either for Bear Bryant.

  3. The SEC is marginally stronger than the ACC but take LSU and Florida out of the SEC and you have a very below average conference. Boston College would match up well with any SEC team other than the above two.

  4. Alabama will probably beat UGA largely because they are playing at home. UGA is notorious for never playing a strong out-of-conference team away from Athens and this often comes back to bite them. GT is mocked for playing a weak ND team in South Bend but who could have anticipated ND’s demise ten years ago when this game was scheduled. Will some brave UGA fan tell me the last time UGA played a potentially top-ten non conference opponent away from Athens? The last one I remember was Michigan in 1965.

  5. Outcome of 2007 GT-UGA game? Too early to tell.

I’m looking for a big win for the dawgs today over Alabama. I believe we have and edge they don’t in the fact Coach Bobo has his first loss as the OC behind him and Coach Saban has his first loss ahead of him. Watch the replay of the Alabama and Arkansas game and notice the looks on the faces of the Alabama fans when Arkansas came from behind and went ahead of Alabama. Also there was some fine clock management by the refs in the last 90 sec that didn’t hurt Alabama at all. This is going to be a great weekend to watch some great games. Hoping to see SC beat LSU and Ky beat Ark. Go dawgs

uga 95, The problem is that in the cocks game by perception; they didn’t try everything to win the game.Usc is a decent team , but you could tell from the onset that UGA thought all they had to was show up. That is a pretty consistent problem with the DAWGS, and that’s not just in the CMR era.

Alt, always the wisenhammer. Keep it up.

Bama has never won a game when ESPN’s Gameday has been in Tuscaloosa. Now if we get that white haired, pencil waving caricature to put on the Elephant head, we win walking away.

WFC, we welcome opposing fans so long as they can contribute something other than insults. I agree with most of your points but number 4. I feel that Bama is just ripe for the upset. Of course I always feel we can win any game we play. Always have, probably always will. This is why I do not bet on the Dawgs. Too much emotion tied into it.

Come back and play some more.

I’ve already picked a Dawgs win based on what the Coach has said about his game plan. Now Saban and CMR will have some changes to what they’re saying in the public but there’s one thing above all that I hoping CMR will do and that is to not be afraid of 2 & 10. Not his exact words but almost and I’m with him all the way. Pivotal is the word I use to describe this game. Go, Coach and win.

“Which teams will show up?”

Ahh, that is the $64k question, isn’t it?

If both teams bring their “A” game, this could be a game that goes down to the wire and will have Dawg (or Bama) fans talking for years.

Unfortunately though, I’m still not convinced UGA’s offensive line is at a point where it can play with the rest of the SEC.

We’ll see in a few hours…

Nail biter that shouldn’t have been. the tight end Chandler should be used for blocking ONLY. He dropped 4 easy passes I know of wide open. The interception over Chandler’s head was awful from Stafford. Mark Richt needs to enroll into clock management 101. Poor usage of timeouts (on defense when Bama was on the hal yard line). This game easily could have been 21-10 Dawgs.

Back from game. I have never commented on another school’s fans because I have always thought that was silly. Every school has obnoxious fans including UGA. However, they were the worst I have ever seen. Trashy rednecks throwing things, calling people “f*”… basically being drunken, churlish louts. I went to the game last year at their hated rival (Auburn) which they call “redneck”. It was the difference between night and day. Auburn’s fans were welcoming, cordial, well dressed and had full sets of teeth in their heads. I never once feared for the safety of my group there.
