Who do we play next?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“Western Whatever.”
That’s what I answered recently when my daughter asked who the Bulldogs were playing after South Carolina. For a moment there, I couldn’t remember if it was Western Carolina or Western Kentucky.
That’s how much this week’s game means to me. And at least I’ll be there. A lot of folks with season tickets skip out on these mean-nothing schedule-filler games against minor nonconference opponents with directional names. Sometimes they give their tickets away to folks who just want to experience a college football game, even if it’s one that nobody’s very excited about. Oftentimes the seats remain empty. But it’s still a sellout, of course, because the seat has been paid for. So attendance officially will be 92,746 (actually, 93,000 is the real count now), but nowhere near that number will actually be in the stands.
I can understand why some people skip these games. Getting up a tailgate and lead-footing it to Athens can be a lot of trouble, but it’s worth it when Georgia is playing an SEC game or a nonconference team worth seeing. Oklahoma State packed the house. A lot of folks got really excited about seeing Ralphie the bison last year when Colorado came calling.
But when the opponent is, let’s face it, a designated loser just there for the payday, it’s hard to work up much interest. Obviously, from the way the Dawgs generally play in these games (flatter than week-old Coke), it’s difficult for the players and coaches to generate much enthusiasm for them, too. (No offense meant to Western Carolina or any other such school we play; if we were in their league or vice versa, I’m sure we’d get excited about it. But they’re not and we don’t.)
At Georgia under Mark Richt, we don’t even get to see our team run up some ridiculous score like they do at Florida or Oklahoma or other major schools that pile on the points while dispatching a minor opponent. No, UGA usually piddles around, looks embarassingly disinterested for a half or so and then finally puts the game safely away, while keeping the score within gentlemanly boundaries.
What’s the fun in that?
I know the argument for these “breather” games; the conference schedule is so tough, plus we have the Yellow Jackets every year. The schedule has been upgraded somewhat in recent years with intersectional foes lined up for one of the open spots. This year, Okie State. Of course, the trade-off is that we’ll have to go visit those schools in return, reducing the number of cash-cow home games some years (like 2008, when we’ll travel to Arizona State, meaning only six home games, one of which isn’t lined up yet). So the Western Whatevers and Eastern Thingumyjigs and Louisiana-Something-or-Others fill out the other nonconference home spots, usually including homecoming.
This year that spot goes to Troy.
Oh boy.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? So let me get this straight. After one loss, UGA has been written off, while the sports writers and polls have annointed the Jackets a hot team on the rise after … what? Beating an unranked team (albeit one with a big “name”) and pounding on a 1-AA team that probably would have a hard time beating some metro Atlanta high school teams. Let’s face it, Notre Dame normally makes the Top 15 just by showing up; the fact that they BEGAN the season unranked showed that everyone knew they were terrible this year. And running up the score on a 1-AA team is hardly the stuff rankings should be made of. Meanwhile, after convincingly beating Oklahoma State, a team that in the pre-season all the media types were hyping, Georgia loses a game it could have won to a fairly evenly matched conference opponent and almost drops out of the Top 25. (And the same folks who a week earlier were telling us how great the Bulldogs were are now gleefully detailing their decline. How quickly they turn.) OK, the Dawgs are 1-1 and there are a lot of 2-0 teams out there. Do you rank a 1-1 team over a 2-0 team? Happens all the time. Many of those 2-0 teams’ victories are over designated patsies on a par with Samford. Of course, it shows you how ridiculous and volatile the college football polls are that Michigan began the season an overhyped No. 5 and then dropped completely out of the Top 25 after one loss. The BCS poll has it right by not even getting cranked up until a month or so into the season.
THIS WAS PREDICTABLE: One win and that classy guy Steve Spurrier already is trying to work his psychological head games on Georgia, belitting the Dawgs and pointing out how many consecutive SEC East teams they’ve lost to OVER TWO SEASONS. I’m sure he thinks that if he can work his mojo he’ll have the Dawgs psyched out like they have been the past decade and a half in Jacksonville. Only one problem. He’s not at Florida any more. It’s South Carolina. Nobody gets psyched out by a loss to South Carolina. You fix what you did wrong and you move on.

I think the high pre-season ranking coupled with the convincing win over a BCS Conference opponent had many Georgia fans forgetting that this is still a team that is playing about 14 freshmen. Our O-Line isn’t where it needs to be. Our QB is still young and making errant throws every now and then. That being said, the season is not lost. All Georgia has to do is go back to beating Vanderbilt and Kentucky and the SC loss has lost it’s weight in the conference race. This was to be the building year. Next year when all of these freshmen and sophmores are sophmores and juniors, then there will be reason to fuss after a loss like the one from last week. But not now. I will be there this Saturday and I will be very disappointed if the turnout is not very high.

My name is Bill King. I bought this goofy looking UGA shirt at WalMart. It wasn’t even on sale.
Hey dawg fans! Don’t worry, last weekends hic-up was just that. Sure, we don’t have a shot at a national championship this year, but the SEC is still in reach. Don’t stop supporting the dawgs just because we aren’t going to the big game this year.
After all, nothing says “Go Dawgs” and “We lost a game? Fire Mark Richt! We were supposed to win the national championship this year” like bulldogs falling off the bandwagon by the boatload.
Go Dawgs!
Yours,
Bill

After laying yet another offensive egg against Georgia, maybe Spurrier’s trying to convince himself that he’s still relevant as a play-caller. 33 points in 3 games. If Georgia had any offense last week, he’d be 0-3 against them. D-coordinator Tyrone Nix is the only who has earned the right to talk trash.

Wow! You know Bill King must be somewhat concerned about the DAWGS when he actually mentions TECH in his BLOG..Twice. DAWG fans are so fickle. We have a great program and a great coach. We lost a game to a good Spurrier team. Who cares what the school is named, it is a well coached Spurrier team..
Yes, the Yellow Jackets have a expierenced and talented team, THIS YEAR. TECH has this type of team once every 3-4 years. This team will be better than any of the Joe Hamilton lead teams. They have alot of depth and speed.
BUT PLEASE DO NOT MENTION TECH ANYMORE IN YOUR BLOG UNTIL NOVEMEBER!

Not sure why everyone is so surprized. Georgia is never a national player. They are always a regional player who is very good…but never the best. The Dawgs are always “this close” to winning something, but rarely pull it off. 2 SEC titles in the last 27 years and you guys talk like you expect it.

It is the Crimson Tide moron. Won the SEC 7 years ago (Not that long ago). Also won the national title 15 years ago (we avg one every 10 years)
We will be back on top in the very near future.
21 SEC titles (most by far) 12 national titles (most) 54 bowls (ncaa record) 30 bowl wins (ncaa record) 30 ten-win seasons (ncaa record)
Win more than 2 SEC titles in the last 27 years and then talk.

Alabama’s been irrelevent for years. What 5 coaches in 7 years? That embarrassing dude! Besides Auburn has whipped you 5 straight. Listen to yourself “its the Crimson Tide.” I know teams slip from time to time (like Oklahoma the last 2 years)but Bama has been out for a while. The DAWGs beat you the last 2 times we played. Fact is both programs have great history and we do expect it every year. Its just that UGA has won more than Bama has lately.

I for one am a season ticket holder that gave my tickets to someone that doesn’t have a chance to go Athens very often. The early kickoff with a weak opponent coupled with trips to Athens the last two weeks in a row and a trip to T-town next week we need a break.
I don’t mind having one less home game every couple of years if it means we can bring in a more competitive team every year.
By the way, UGA has won 1 NC and 5 SEC titles in the last 27 years vs. Bama’s 1 NC and 4 SEC titles in the same time period. We have also employed half the number of head coaches as has the Tide since 1980.

It must be nice to know it all. It is clear that most of the people on these blogs have to bad mouth the Dawgs and their fans to feel like they know something about football, but come on people please show that you have a little more intelligence than just being able to use a computer. Things I know 1)The only coach that consistently bad mouths the opposition before and after games, Steve Spurrier 2)The 18,19 & 20 yr old players at UGA show more professionlism and class than that 3)It does get old not getting to the “BIG” game and losing to UF every year but it is nice to know that most every year the potential is there. There are not but a handful of programs that can say that i.e.,UF,USC(not carolina),LSU,AU,UT,Texas,OK among others, Alabama would have been mentioned 8 or 9 years ago but thats just not the case anymore. Maybe for some of my friends and the whiners on here, Nick Satan can turn things around.Just hope he doesn’t get a better offer elsewhere,he’s about as loyal as an unfed Micheal Vick dog. Truthfully, he’s not worth what the Tide is paying him now. Anybody that thinks otherwise is just kidding themselves.4)CMR knows what he is doing. You people say he will never be that “top tier” coach in one sentence and in the next you say he’ll be at FSU next year.If FSU thinks he can be, I believe , no I know, the powers that be at FSU know more than anybody on here. Maybe some of you people should send your resumes in. I have no problem with criticism, but to speak as the know-all be-all just shows your true ignorance. Finally, this is my first post and will most likely be my last. I have to many more important things to do than to banter with you people, just reading your posts makes me dumber. I get more out a conversation with my 7 yr. old. But for a Bama fan to come on to this blog and crow about an SEC title 7 years ago and in the same breath attempt to demean Georgia’s accomplishments in the same time frame is way the hell out there brother. You really should put that shovel down and quit attempting to raise Bear from the dead. He’s gone and so is the Bama tradition. Notre Dame is overrated and always will be. We got docked because Georgia neever gets any love, due to the major media outlets being in the northeast and being jealous. The love over the Okie State win was premature (but it also had me thinking we were better than I thought we were going to be). The truth is, no one will want to play us at the end of the season or next year. What is Steve Spurrier going to do when his QB, both RBs, and defense graduate. We will stomp him next year.

Cuz,
It’s WCU we’re playing this weekend instead of WKU. We’re taking a break from the Pillpoppers and their red turd mascot this year. What is that thing anyway? Looks like Gumby stayed out in the sun too long, red, melted. We still should be subbing like crazy in the second half. If those on the redshirt bubble don’t play this week, it will surely be “see ya next year” for them, barring injury at a thin position.
JAKE SCOTT!!! I mean GREAT SCOTT!!! Spurrier being Spurrier! Lots and lots of frustration vented for sure! It’s not like some big, powerful defense shut them out last season in their place. Not a single point! That only happens to a Spurrier coached team once every…..well…..NEVER!! At least not since he was a young Dookie! (Now he’s just an old Dookie!). Add that to the fact that he hasn’t beaten UGA in six years and he’s been burning for awhile.
I missed his trash talking session last week to the folks at U-LaLa! Oh, wait! He planned that game to lull the Dawgs to sleep. Oh, well, looks like it worked to a tee. He’d better work the same magic with SC State this weekend, so LSU will be looking for a good nap the following week!

I never bought into the UGA hype this year. I said four losses this year and felt that SC could be one of them. What DOES bother me is that this now appears to be a team that looks more like a traditional Tech team than a UGA team. That being one that can beat anyone in the nation one week and lose to anyone in the nation the next. That is just not the consistency I want to see. I guess I am old school, but I want to beat everyone we should (SC, Vandy, Kentucky, etc), and play the big boys even up, win or lose.

Any loss to South Carolina is an embarrassment, but we’ll get over it. We have a lot of talented young players who have to mature before reaching their potential. We’ll be fine. I hope that steps will be taken in the future to avoid a total rebuild of the offensive line like we’ve had twice in the past few years. We should have juniors and sophs on the offensive line stepping up every season to replace graduated seniors. We’ve had some bad luck on the OL with injuries, etc, but it’s too important to risk it happening again - numbers need to be increased there and maintained higher from now on. The whole offense depends on it.

Who IS the strength in the SEC? The fact is that it is always somewhat streaky. Florida was irrelevent until Spurrier. TN could never beat them until near the end of Spurrier’s reign. GA took the baton for several years and TN could finally occasionally beat FL, but could not beat GA. Now the SEC East is getting dominated by the SEC West and frankly AL which was a powerhouse once, will probably become competitive again. Auburn has fallen, and LSU will sooner or later fall back.
My point is that it is too early to predict the SEC East because even KY and Vandy are stronger…the SEC West may dominate for awhile. The SEC is, and has been, a circular firing squad…and it will be hard for any team, including LSU, to get out of the conference without a loss.

Just had to vent a little bit concerning all the blog on the UGA receivers and Coach Bobo. First I think over all Coach Bobo called a very good game. I do admit the 4 and 2 fakey play to some might have seemed unusual at that time, but that didn’t loose the game for us and the few dropped passes didn’t loose the game for us.
The sorry, inept quarterback play lost the game for us. Sean Bailey ran a outstanding route in the first half (I believe in the second quarter) and was open at the goal line and Stafford overthrew him. Moreno ran a beautiful swing route on a play that Coach Bobo called and Stafford overthrew him. The play when Michael Moore didn’t catch the low ball thrown to him at the East goal line in the fourth quarter was not the throw to make. The play should have gone to tight end Trip Chandler who all alone coming across the middle with no defender in sight. This pretty assurdly would have scored a touchdown. Stafford was consistently under throwing, throwing behind receivers, or throwing to the wrong man all day. Matthew Stafford and poor quarterback play was the reason Georgia lost Saturday, not Coach Bobo’s play calling and the few dropped passes.
On the question of the bad quarterback play, I don’t understand why Joe Cox didn’t get a chance to come in and play like he did in the Colorado game last year when it was evident that Stafford wasn’t sharp and missing on his passes last Saturday, which in the case against South Carolina resulted in 25 incompletions. There you go. Until next time. Go DAWGS

For at least this one game UGA needs to change its style in worrynig about running up the score. CMR needs to let Bobo see how many point he can score in 4 quarters and let Stafford get his timing and touch fixed. We don’t need to worry about the other team, we need to get our offense clicking on all cylinders. Stafford has never had a “break-out” game and this week would be good time for him to throw for 400 yds. At the same time we can let Moreno and T Brown pad those stats to make up for the games we let them run to control the clock. This needs to be like a scrimmage that we treat each poccession as if we are down by 14 and need to put 6 on the board. In fact, if we had done that against OkieSt we may have been better prepared for USC, instead of all the overthrows we had since the arm was still rusty.

I don’t see how an early SEC loss kills NC hopes. If by some miracle we win out, beating Florida, Tennessee, Tech, and probably LSU in the SEC championship game, how can we not play for the national title? Sounds like a stretch, but we’d still have to beat the same teams if we did beat SC.

Hang it up, call it a day, quit whining and crying and just take it like a man.
Your program is ovrrrated, always has been and the 5 straight losses in the SEC East has proved this program is in decline.
Spurrier owns you so just get used to it. Best get ready for the Catamounts, because they could take it to you.
I told you CMR will be gone in 3-5 years or less, and maybe sooner since Miami is already in trouble. CMR cannot recruit at UGA, because the school is just too redneck, bottom line. He would have a load of talent in Miami just out his back door.
UGA 35, Catamounts 14.

Quit dreaming, and this is never going to happen with that coaching crew in Athens. UGA is more in love with playing the SEC than winning head to head.
Forget about the SEC, and start looking out for good teams like Appalachian State or USF. Cal already took it to UT, and AU lost to USF, so the SEC is not was powerful as you think.
You talk UA out of the national title total, and the SEC would be scrambling for total titles as compared to the Big 12 and Pac-10.

How is it that S.C. beats us once in 6 years and Spurrier OWNS us. What he did at Florida is irrelevent. He will NEVER have the calibar players at S.C he did at Florida. GET A LIFE!!!

How can you accuse Steve Spurrier of being classless when you begin this drivel you call an article with an insult to this week’s opponent.
Where the hell has sportsmanship gone in collegiate athletics?
I’ll tell you where it’s gone….its been sacrificied to the tastes of the idiots who pander to the likes of you and the rest of the knuckleheads like you that every media outlet insists on giving a microphone (or keyboard)(see Lee Corso, Lou Holtz, Jeff Shultz).
Whatever happened to decorum?
I hope Georgia plays well and beats the Catamounts from Western Carolina.
It’s the attitude that you begin this article with that got Lloyd Carr’s team beat at home……which will lead to his firing at the end of the season.
I hope the kids suiting up in Athens Saturday have more maturity than you….or they deserve to lose.

“Anti Bill King” What a great response. This guy is your classic whiney baby dawg fan and many of his columns are just as tasteless. I’m sure right now he is whining about UGA’s “quality opponent” Okla. St making him look like the fool he is.

I know it’s early in the game, but we’re making the same stupid play calls. Moreno just ran it twice in a row for about 9 yards each time. Then we pull him for Brown who gets less than 2 yards, and we start passing without completing anything. What happens next? Guess what, a field goal! This is Western Carolina for God’s sake. I love Brown and h’s a damn good Dawg, but if Moreno is running all the defense, why can we not figure out to leave him in there and just keep running the ball? I hate to see these stupid mistakes again and again. Let’s just pound them into submission, and then get some young guys some playing time.

UGA is averaging 1.3 YARDS PER CARRY against Western Carolina!!! Oh my god!! UGA is horrible. I take back my prediction of 6-6 for the season. Lucky if you are 2-9!!!

The game was ugly in the 1st quarter with western Carolina only down 10-6. I was listening to Larry (monotone) Munson on the radio. If this is the team that shows up to play Bama next week then we will be embarassed bigtime. Why does Richt’s teams always seem content winning by 4 points even to much lesser teams ? The depth finally caught up with WC and the Dawgs routed them but it was still ugly to me. Glad to see the bees team lost to BC. Welcome to reality Tech fans.
