Top 3 moments from a good first win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My three favorite moments during Saturday’s game against the Pokes:
1) MoMass playing heads-up football with that tackle on the Okie State punter to set up Georgia’s first score. Everyone else seemed concerned with setting up the return, but he saw that the ball was on the ground and rushed in. I bet it felt good to be on the other side of a big tackle for a change!
2) The spin move Knowshon Moreno put on an OSU defender on his first pass reception.
3) The way the fans’ shouts of “No, no!” turned to “Go, go!” when Mikey Henderson started out retreating before finally turning the corner and setting off on that 63-yard punt return.
OTHER GOOD STUFF: Georgia scoring on the first play from scrimmage with Thomas Brown scampering 14 yards on that good-as-new knee. … I liked the way Mike Bobo had us throwing a lot of dumps and screens to our backs, a good way to give them the ball in the open with a head of steam and also take the pressure off our inexperienced offensive line. Moreno had three really nice runs on pass receptions (though one was negated by a clip). … A couple of things I really liked about the game Bobo called: First, we ran mostly out of the I-formation. I think we only ran that awful sprint draw that Richt was so fond of one time (and it didn’t work). Secondly, Bobo showed great patience, especially in the second quarter when a sack and a false start had us at second down and 27. Instead of trying to get it all back in one play, we ran Brown (who got 17) and then threw to Sean Bailey, who took it down to the 3, setting up our third TD. Much of the offense was vanilla, particularly in the second half, but it was effective. … The crowd was really into the game, making a lot of noise when the Cowpokes had the ball. … After a line-drive first effort on which he got a lucky bounce, Brian Mimbs looked pretty solid punting the ball. His hang time seemed to get better as the game went on. … Mr. Reliable, fullback Brannan Southerland, punching in another score from down close. If we’re on the 2, that’s who needs to get the ball. … Only one dropped pass (though it was real bad one, right in his hands) and no turnovers. Pretty remarkable for a first game. … That was an excellent fake by Matthew Stafford on the pass for Georgia’s fourth touchdown. … The second effort by Moreno that extended some of his runs after the first hit.
NOT SO GOOD STUFF: Special teams play was spotty and, at times, disorganized. Kickoff coverage improved after that long return by OSU after our first score, but we got called twice for having 12 men on the field before receiving punts (and would have gotten a third but for a timeout) and it was a real groaner when two Dawgs watched a punt that should have been downed at the Cowboys’ 2 dribble between them into the end zone. And protection for our placekicker was poor on the PATs, which is why we didn’t go for a field goal when we had fourth down on their 32 with 9 minutes left (or, for that matter, at all) despite having one of the top field goal kickers in the country on the sideline. (Kudos to “water girl” Kathryn Richt for asking that question that so many fans wanted to ask on her husband’s Sunday recap show.) That probably also explains why we let the clock run before OSU punted late in the first half rather than call a timeout so we could get in position for a field goal try. I’m sure the coaching staff will be working on improving our kick protection in practice this week since the Gamecocks no doubt will pick up on that weakness. … OSU had most of its success with screen passes and option plays on the right corner of the UGA defense, indicating a need for some adjustment there. … Our defense showed a lot of speed, but there were quite a few missed tackles by the first man to the ball. … Finally, I understand us running out the clock the last three times we had the ball in the fourth quarter, but what the heck was Stafford doing still in there at QB if all he was going to do was hand off to Moreno? That’s what backup quarterbacks are for and it would have given Joe Cox a little game time. Plus, it would have looked awfully stupid if Stafford had gotten hurt while unnecessarily in the game on mop-up work.
OTHER STUFF: How could the Redcoats pay tribute to James Brown at halftime and NOT play “Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs”??!! … Did you notice that all seven of the Munson cups were available randomly at the concession stands, instead of one per game like the Uga cups last year? That’s gonna make it difficult for anyone who wants a complete collection. … Sanford Stadium has gotten its first “name” concession outlets with the addition of a Moe’s Southwest Grill (burritos) in the West lower end zone and a Mcalister’s Deli up in the 600 level (top deck on the North side). How about a Varsity location? … The drink stands remained understaffed and run by folks who didn’t seem sure of what they were doing. Meanwhile, the Sanford shops had more people behind the counter than they did lined up to buy merchandise.

We looked better than I expected. A few trouble spots here and there, but nothing that can’t be corrected this week. Can’t wait until Spurrier and pretenders get into town.

I checked out a OSU site to find out how coach Gundy saw the game.He thinks the use of Screens by Bobo to counter their blitzing was a big factor. He mentioned that they allowed 140 yds to our offense after contact. From our perspective the backs broke tackles and fought hard.He was impressed with Moreno and predicts big things for him(join the club). With Lumpkin down I took a look at who might could be moved into the backfield. If Vance Cuff is strong enough I think he has very good potential with the ball in his hands.Whether it’s as a slot receiver or some other way it’s just a matter of time before he proves he can move the chains.

Was it just me or did CMR seem to have a bemused smile on his face the whole game. Seemed to me he enjoyed himself quite a bit. Kind of like the cat that ate the canary what with all the naysayers and doomsday prophets out there. Kind of gives one an air of confidence when you know you have recruited big, strong, and fast football players for the last 5 years. You don’t win championships with just your starters and I beleive our first 50 will be able to compete with anybody elses first 50. Hope CMR can keep from bursting out laughing when Darth Visor pitches a fit and throws his little hat. Hopefully we can get him to stomp on it. I sensed a new attitude, enthusiasm, and a different air about the team. Maybe, just maybe, youth will be served. We are young and inexperienced but, the boys are gonna be allright! Dang, just wait.

Yo, David. Unless your an Appy State fan, then I don’t think there’s any reason to call out Georgia fans for analyzing the strengths and weaknesses shown by this game. At least Georgia played somebody instead of Southwest Montana Community College (or a Northeast Indiana parochial school).

I agree completely with your questions regarding Stafford being in the game for the last 9 minutes of clock running. I must’ve been sitting near you, because I was shouting “No, no” at Mikey and turning that into “Go, go!” I also was griping about Cox not being in for the end of the game as well - mostly for the injury fears concerning Stafford, but also because Cox could use a little backup action.
I was pleased with the performance overall, but we have a long way to go for sure. OSU was better than opening with WKU, but they’re not the SEC. Get ready for the Ol’ Ball Coach to bring it to us next week! Go Dawgs!!
And David, nobody, for the most part, played a ranked team this week - but we did play a quality I-A team. Thanks for noticing and reminding us to keep our heads level though. We can always use a few haters in our corner to keep us grounded and motivated! Come on back whenever you’d like to talk real football.

Bill,
I was saying the same damn thing about Stafford being in the game and so was everyone else around me! I guess maybe they thought by taking Matt out of the game it was going to keep the Pokies honest. I don’t know, didn’t make sense to me.
Moreno needs to be the primary ball carrier for this team. He can do so much more than Brown. Moreno looks like a Hearst clone out there busting through tackles and shifting his wieght with ease. But he looks quicker, he really does look quicker.

I would like to know why Richt didn’t play Cox in the last 6 or so minutes? It seems that we were taking a chance on Matt getting hurt and might need Cox to play. Why not give him son game time when the outcome is decided?

Ok, folks, Stafford probably stayed in because it is important that end-of-the-game things are worked on, like calling time outs, general clock management and hand-offs. There is no pre-season, so this was necessary. I think there will be some other opps for Cox to get some time in and be shown the appreciation by the team.
This team is SOOOO young, and still in a great spot now. Speed, balanced attack, strong defense, and special teams seems to be improved. Kicking game is excellent, good head on our QB, and the receivers did a great job this game. I am cautiously optimistic.
Still, last year started out great… it is a long season, but I am excited to see it starting so well.

Great game, nothing to complain about on the field. Word is that Zaxby’s will be running the concessions next year, so we get our fill on chicken!! Makes you really miss the good ole days with a Poss BBQ sandwich.
On a different note, sure wish people would learn to sit where there tickets are. We’re in section 129, had 6 people sitting in 4 seats in front of us…and then 6 in 4 seats next to us. Maybe Damon needs to bring in the aisle police since no one seems to know where their seats are!

Bill,
Great points all around. I wonder whose authority it was to keep Stafford in the game so late. If it was Bobo, then CMR should have stepped in.
Good to see Chapas get some work after Lumpkin’s injury. I believe we’ll see Caleb King sooner than later. He doesn’t know the playbook, but CMR and Bobo can work him into the lineup with a few simple plays to give us insurance. Nothing against Chapas, or Jason Johnson for that matter, who I thought was ahead of Chapas, but neither RB is the same caliber as CK. The aforementioned duo seems to fit the fullback mold better anyway.
Very unfortunate for Lumpkin, who has already spent a medical redshirt, but I trust the coaching staff will make the right choices, and I will faithfully support those decisions.
GO DAWGS!! BEAT THOSE COCKS!!!! And flush Spurrier down the toilet while you’re at it!

Hey geniuses, Appalachian State is NOT a I-A (or whatever the hell they call it this year) school, so it’s not ranked - DUH!!!!!!!!
Tech beat ND - impressed, but ND is perpetually overrated, lost 8 offensive starters and obviously went into the game thinking that GT would be awed bytthe image of Touchdown Jesus.
Now on to the Dawgs - I thought that it was a solid first game, penalties notwithstanding.
Offense - A+. Smooth, great running, excellent receiving (for a change).
Defense - B+. Mostly solid, but a few lapses here and there. Still, better than I had expected.
Special Teams - B-. The most unsteady part of an otherwise solid game. Kick coverage, and as it has been pointed out, protecting the kicker- both need improvement.
Redcoat Band - A+ as always (being a Redcoat alum, I may be just a little biased!!) Bill, you’re right, though. My niece is a junior Redcoat trumpet player this year, and she showed me the music for the show. I thought that it was ridiculous to have omitted “DJD” as well. It was a staple of our stands music in the 70s, and I had the honor of playing it on the field with the Godfather himself in ‘77, at home against Kentucky and again at Jacksonville. No “Junkyard Dogs”?? Good God, y’all!! Hit me!!!

Why worry about Stafford played the whole game. I’m sure Bobo was working on something and I’ll trust his judgement…..Hope they get Caleb King ready to play….We need that speed on the field. Give him 6 plays to learn and run to both sides of the field, coaching him up on blocking and let’s go.

I was disappointed, as I was last year, that Thomas Brown doesn’t seem to find any holes in the line. Do they just not block for him because he’s so strong? I saw Moreno get some decent second effort yardage but I rarely see Thomas get anything like that. And we didn’t seem to go vertical with the passing game. Maybe we were holding back a little. Overall, a good victory, but kind of boring.

ODawg,
We did go vertical once and the receiver wasn’t expecting the ball because it sailed right by him. As for opening up the play book it was not going to happen because of those nagging injuries to the OL preventing installing and running the whole offense. Look for more of the playbook to be shown this week. As for Thomas Brown he did better than I thought he would but he did run into the back of his offensive linemen a couple of times doesn’t seem to see the field and the hole that well, plus he doesn’t appear to have that quick of a first step. He is outstanding as a kick off returner though. They need to get him the ball out in the flats more. Overall we dominated on both sides of the ball which bodes well for the rest of the season. Go Dawgs

I don’t recall Mike Bobo’s W/L record as QB against Spurrier/Florida but I hope he’s thinking about begining a long undefeated record starting Saturday as our Offensive Coordinator against the Ol’ Ball Coach.
I’m originally from Moultrie and agree with A-ville Ranger, while Vance Cuff is a very talented corner, getting his hands on the ball would also be a major plus for the Offense.

Also, the reason why Thomas brown starts and is in the game more that Knowshon is because Brown is GREAT at picking up the blitz and moreno is not…

My name is Bill King. I got this goofy looking UGA shirt at Wal Mart. It wasn’t even on sale.
Hey Dawg Fans! Was that a great game or what? And let me tell you, my sporty new hat and UGA Crocs were the biggest hit of the day that wasn’t on the football field.
I’m telling you, I had compliments coming from every direction. Even from a cowpoke. They thought I was wearing a UGA fan COSTUME it was so authentic.
Guys, I know I shouldn’t be getting excited so soon, but someone told me where I could get a UGA fanny pack. I had trouble sleeping last night just thinking about it.
I tell you, nothing says “Go Dawgs” and “This is our year to win the National Title,..oh..wait we seem to have lost a couple games” like some slick looking UGA gear.
Go Dawgs!

I liked the MoMass heads up play too. Although it wasn’t a very smart thing to do, I liked Reshad’s punch. Put that guy on flat on his arse.
Coach looked a lot more relaxed during the whole game. That was nice to see.
Overall I really hope the Cowboys are as good as they claimed they were. If so we looked really good. Like the momentum from last year carried over. Bowman and crew will have to work hard to get back to “Also mentioned” in the rankings. Good luck to them, Ihope they can win out from here.

For the “what it’s worth department” I consider it an excellent call to leave Stafford in the entire game. It’s much more important at this point that he be as seasoned as possible heading into an SEC game as pivotible as the SC game can actually turn out to be. Cox will see ample playing time and I expect he’ll do well. C’mon guys keep the good of the team at heart when armchair coaching.
Also, what can possibly be gained by making Moreno the primary ball carrier? He’s good….very good but he’s also a redshirt freshman with lots to learn. Sharing time with T Brown will only foster his development and keep him from having to should a very big load on his own. Plus T.Brown is an excellent back and between the two of them they’ll keep an opposing defense off guard with different running styles.
For those that oppose the “team concept” I realize you won’t agree with my statement…..but I don’t care

You are most likely not the only one and you are also most likely of the younger generation. As you get older and see the years beginning to pass by you’ll see the importance of hanging on to the rivalry of the GA/Tech game. It’s over 100 years of hate and going strong. Granted, it isn’t a game of importance unless there are NC implications but the bragging rights for the state are priceless. We don’t only play in the same state but live and recruit.
Whether we like it or not, Ga and Tech fans are cut from the same cloth. The difference being Dawg fans have been blessed by the grace of God to be better, more intelligent athletes and Tech, well they’ve become brainiacs in a fruitless attempt to figure out why.
My advice to you is to take hold and enjoy the intra-state rivalry, Not all states have one and thank God you’re a Dawg

As bad as I hate to say it, UGA is for real, I had my doubts but they looked good. Great coach, good assistants, they have their choice of the best high school athletes the state of Georgia has (# 1 high school football), they utilize that talent to the fullest, and their QB is the real deal. He will be another Peyton Manning before he is finished with his career. I am an Auburn fan and hate to see it, but UGA might run the table. War Eagle!

Thanks for the encouraging comments. No doubt the dawgs have a plethora of talent and depth but it’s still young and inexperienced. While I hope you are correct at running the table, I can’t see it happening this year. Although that will not stop me from cheering for it.

NCT….you are an idiot
This is the first year in many years that UGA finally opened with a contender. No more Western Kentucy, or Agnes Scott for UGA this year. GT typically opens with a tough opponent, and at least GT opened with AU and beat them in on the Plains several years ago.
Go ahead an blow off the Golden Domers, but they have more national titles than you imagine, and ND is a much classier/less redneck program than Athens.
I will give you credit that Stafford looked good, but you have a long ways to go before you go popping off around Athens, but would we expect less? No, absolutely not. Matter of fact, I predicted my Jackets would lose to the Golden Domers, but they surprised me, but I also understand the Jackets have a long ways to go and there is nothing to get excited about yet.
UGA fans win an opener against the a Big 12 team that is above-average, and all of a sudden you are number 1. Open with Southern Cal, OU, or Florida then you can talk, otherwise, show some maturity and class and see how the season unfolds.
This is the problem with your team, you get cocky after 1 win, then go on a slide. I still predict UGA will lose to UT, UF and AU, because Stafford will be on his back all day long, and your defense will break down.
Yes Keg Toting Stafford had a good Sat., but let’s see how is does in traffic.
By the way, gtbaltfan, Amen!! Amen!! Amen!! I am with you brother! Dogs suck, year in and year out…1 national title vs. the Jacket’s 4 and all of a sudden UGA is football GOD! LOL!!!

I can respect that hatred. I don’t get to caught up in it myself but I will take a pot shot at a loudmouth now and again. Unfortunately I have several dye hard Tech fans as friends and the bulls**t flows like a raging river. But all in good sport and fun. I don’t live there anymore either. Too bad we can’t ALL be in God’s country

Just as a heads-up to anyone reading this blog without strong inside knowledge of UGA football, here are some quips anyone can use to quickly quiet a UGA football fan:
Ask how many national football titles they have? They will answer 4 or 5, but the truth is only 1 in 1980 by the grace of Belue to Lindsey Scott.
Ask about Jan Kemp, and how she socially promoted her students to keep playing on Saturday for Vince Dooley.
Ask how many players have been arrested this year for DUI, DWI, and even Caleb King for going the wrong way on his Vespa. They call this THUGA, not UGA.
Ask about how the Bulldogs dominated from 1985 to 1998, with Ray Goof and the Donnan of a new era…LOL!
Ask how their offensive coordinator holds the record for the most interceptions.
Ask how many times Florida has beaten UGA in the last 17 games, and the answer would be 15 or Florida is batting .888, which is not bad.
Ask how UGA did at homecoming last year against Vandy.
Ask how in the world a football player can major in Housing.
Ask how many Steve Spurrier hung on the dogs in 1995, which would be 52 points with Florida.
And last but not least, ask why in the world do UGA fans spend so much money, time and effort only to watch another mediocre season year after year, since 1980.
How Bout Dem Dogs!!!

I’ve never heard of any coach suggesting that he has a Heisman QB after the first game of his soph year but Richt just did. He’s trying to bait Stafford to stay at UGA 4 years so he can get the Heisman. Can the AJC begin to publish the top 100 band players in GA so we can see how many of them committ to UGA ?

Dude you really should get a life. Obviously, the dawgs off and on the field antics of the last 25 years has cause you much grief. I suppose thats relatively easy to understand given The dawgs domination over tech in that same time frame. OPPS! Guess you’d prefer I didn’t mention that huh?…..LOL
Sorry 17INT I don’t fill my head with useless trivia for the blog but I will ask you to ask yourself one question: Who won between Georgia and Georgia Tech last year?…or say the year before that?……or the year before that?…..damn….no wonder your so bitter

I read the story and didn’t read any infer by Richt that Stafford is a Heisman candidate. He did however elude to Staffords athletic ability. Hey, the man has coach two heisman winners so I would expect he might know what he’s talking about. Your jealously and hatred is noted

I think we would look a lot sharper each week if all you wealthy and ntelligent UGA alumni would build an indoor practice facility for me and my “good friend” Joe Cox so we can practice our tickle piles together in private like Pollack and Greene used to do when they were “roomates”.

Wow!! I never thought I would see the day when Techies actually would admit that UGA fans—in the real world—do have more brains~more money so that we can build the better team; Oh, and your homophobia is noted.

georgia sucks look what Spurrier did to them Stafford was running for his life. No protection up front all day nobody could catch a cold bear a$$ in the snow. Knowshon had a few good runs and dont understand why they didnt give him the ball on 4th down, but thats Mark Richt for ya. All I got to say is GO JACKETS, 102-17 in two games and we will handle BC the same way saturday, by the way make sure UGA stays up and watches a real team play
