Men vs. (Cow) Boys
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Once again, Georgia opened against a team from out West sporting a high-powered offense and the national pundits were hollering “upset special.”
It was Boise State, Mark II, as the freshman-laden Dawgs lent credence to the idea that the Big 12 is really the Big 2 Plus 10 Others.
And Okie State isn’t one of the Big 2.
Welcome to the SEC.
Other quick thoughts: Welcome back Sean Bailey and Thomas Brown. A big welcome to future stardom, Knowshon Moreno. And Brandon Miller, you finally lived up to your billing!
A great win. Next week should be more of a challenge.
More tomorrow.

one thing to say to pat forde and anyone else who predicted an osu upset. Why? Georgia is in the SEC and OSU is not. You can pump in a the crowd noise you want, but an SEC defense is an SEC defense, even if we only have 3 returning starters. Our offense looked awesome. 0 turnovers, and stafford looked poised and in control. we are ready to kick some USC a* next week!

Did anyone besides me see the speed of the secondary? Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than an overated OSU offense. Able to leap lame wide reciver blocks in a single bound. Is it a bird, a plane or a frog. No just little old us, the Wonderdawgs.

Carter writes: “But not everything went Georgia’s way Saturday … Stafford hurried some throws and missed a few others.” 75% completion rate and Strickland uses it as an example of Bulldog shortfalls in an impressive win. I guess he was too busy thinking of Tech compliments.

Words cannot describe how good it feels. This GA defense is just plain nasty. Break out the pepsid ac for Spurrier. The offense looked confident and most importantly, diciplined. Brown is back, and Moreno is just rediculous. My only concern or question is, “What happened with Lump?”. Gen Neyland, my condolences to you and the TN fans. The SEC must avenge this one somehow. Maybe come bowl season we can right that ship. Good grief, these Dawgs are nasty. I saw Ellerbe take off after the OSU qb and he was kicking up sod like a p** off bull. Speed kills brother! GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS!!! God blessed all in the Dawg nation tonight. A shout out to the FOC!

Georgia looked good. Very good backfield with Moreno and Brown carrying the load. Stafford is a future NFL star. Sutherland is an excellent blocker. The WR’s are much improved. The defense shut down a very good offense. However, OSU’s defense is terrible. SC will be a better match up and a much better test for how good Georgia is. After watching the Vols last night, the 3 best teams in the East appear to be Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina…not necessarily in that order…with Kentucky just barely out of the race for now. It should be a fun season. P.S. Notre Dame being a bad team or not, Georgia Tech looked very good, especially on defense, the offensive line, and their running back may be the best in the nation. With any QB play at all this year, Tech will be undefeated when they play Georgia. And the QB play is what has limited Tech in their big games the last 4 years.

Tampa, thanks for the compliments!I don’t know that SC will be a better test though. Check the box score of the South Carolina Game, they gave up 252 yds rushing to the Ragin Cajuns, and won 28-14 only because they stopped the Cajun’s from scoring TWICE in the 2nd half on 4th downs inside the SC 5yd line. Also, keep in mind OKST had the #7 offense in the country last year, returned almost every starter and could only manage 14 pts and 266 yds of offense.

Lets give some credit to Mike Bobo( future College head coach)and willie martenez has finally unleashed the pitbulldawgs on defense. A very solid effort on both ends.Georgia stays healthy on both ends and with this team being sooooooooo Young, I see this years team a top 10, and with the recruits coming in next year, we will be a top 5 team next year, Goooooooooooooooo Dawgs

A few observations…
Looks like Moreno is the real deal. So much hype surrounds these kids coming out of high school, you don’t know what to beleive. “Moreno adds the WOW factor” is an appropriate summation.
Is it just me or did Thomas Brown pick up a little speed? Looked real crisp with his cuts as well.
The offensive line did okay. Lot of room for improvement but it wasn’t a complete meltdown as some had predicted.
The play of the linebackers will be the key to the GA defense this year, I’m thinking. They were all over the field Saturday and really shut down OSU’s spread offense.
The bad…
Rashad, or whoever it was, that got that personal foul for punching the other player late in the game. That’s the kind of crap that will cost you a game. Good to see Richt chewing on his a55 when he got to the sideline though.
Pass protection. Yeah, I know, young offensive line, first game, etc, etc. If Stafford’s not able to stay in the pocket and throw long, you take away one of his key strengths.
Overall, a pretty good showing.

I guess 70 yards rushing and 190 yards passing is what Mark May and the Big XII consider “high powered.” Man, they must have low standards at ESPN and the Big XII
My favorite part of the game? All of the TWO TIGHT I-FORMATION WE RAN!!!
Slobbernocker football, baby!!!
And while Brown looked okay (still couldn’t run up the gut all that well, two yard gains most of the time) Moreno is a MAN!!! I know his final line says 20 carries for 70 yards, but it was really more like 12 carries for 60 yards. Those last eight carries were into the teeth of 10 man front, and as good as he is, not even Herschal could have gotten much more against a 10 man front.
Man, this game was freaking awesome!!!
Bring on South Carolina, who struggled with LA Lafeyette. Bring on their delinquent QB. Bring on their “genius” head coach (it’s easy to label yourself a genius when you work with great talent).
I’m smelling a SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT of the Lamecocks!!!

We discovered 3 things.
1-Don’t always buy into the media hype. OS was supposed to be the top offense in the universe according to them. I don’t think so.
2-Knowshon Moreno is the real deal.
3-Reshad Jones has a great right hand.

ATL Dawg, re expanding the 600 level.
I hope not. Athens is just not set up to handle another 30,000 people coming into town. Lack of parking, traffic issues, etc. should kill that idea.
Having sat in the 600 level on several occasions, I can tell you it was not an enjoyable experience. The only thing that made it worthwhile is that the games we attended were against some of the weaker teams and we were able to move down to field level after the half.

Let’s face it guys, this team has the potential to be something special. Man I could not wait for our offence to get off the field to watch the power of the D. Man what speed. Reshad, please do not hit Darth Visor, he is getting a little older now.

We can’t get too over confident on South Carolina. I remember 2 years ago they played another patsy for the first game and made our game very close. Spurrier does not show much for the first game because he did not have to. He kept it very basic on the offense. All he wanted was a win and not show hardly any of his cards.
Now at saying that, yes, we should win. I just hope the boys stay focused. My feelings would not be hurt if we shut them out again and drop 50 points on them. GO DAWGS!

Good start on the season.Firstthe defense, coach Martinez did a great job. They showed a very good balance between disrupting the QB and containing the receivers and backs (a tough thing to do). The first time Howard got to the QB he looked so small I thought it was a safety blitz.Miller made some big plays but he still looks like a more natural DE than LB.On offense Stafford did everything well except throw the deep ball and that will come.Brown and Moreno make a dynamic backfield tandem, question is has Lumpkin been pushed aside ? Bailey looks to be the top receiver option and Wilson showed the moxie we’ve been hearing about. The O-line did the job but next week should be a bigger test. Now let’s take care of the old ball sack and his red chickens.

Wow! One win at home against a mediocre team and already UGA fans are declaring themselves national champs. UGA will never get to elite status and will never win a NC. They always schedule a couple cream puff games (at home of course)then lose a couple of SEC games and then cry about how the SEC is too tough. How about beating the Gators for once then come back and we’ll discuss. In over 100 years of football UGA has only 1 football national championship and that is how it will always be.

Impressive win. The final score was about what I thought (hoped) it would be. The defense played inspired Georgia football under a masterful game plan thanks to the coaching staff. Other than Lumpkin’s dislocated thumb, there was one insignificant injury to a senior reserve (FS Andrew Williams) late in the 4th quarter. But before we go beating our chests, let’s keep things in perspective here.
After only one game, this season is becoming an eerie reflection of 2005. While we were overpowering a team (OSU) that was supposed to be overpowering (Boise State), Spurrier’s boys were struggling against a team (U-LaLa) that was supposed to be struggling (Cent. Fla). Does anyone remember what happened when the Gamecocks ducked into Sanford Stadium year before last? I do (I was there). And it was anything but pretty.
Our Dawgs were riding high (Shockley was even mentioned in the Heisman watch) that week and the Chicken fans were silent after their embarrassment in Columbia. We played uninspired ball and nearly lost the contest. I only hope that we don’t underestimate them next week like we did then.
The OSU game was a huge confidence boost for our offense, particularly the line, but the Carolina defense is galaxies ahead of a Cowboy defense that gave up an average of over 400 ypg against Big 12 opponets last year. We will undoubtably need to play better next week to move the chains, and we are more than capable of the task.
With this game under our belts, the butterflies should be out of the way, and I’m proud that we didn’t have more O-penalties than we did. But SEC ball is different. We’ll need to stay disciplined and patient.
Expect a lower scoring game next week that we should win. Another goose egg would be nice, and if the defense plays focussed like they did last night, it just may happen.
GOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!!!

Wow! herewegoalready’s sucks. A little optimism is fine, and generalizing all UGA fans declaring themselves national champs is just plain wrong. This game was supposed to have the upset factor, and we creamed them. You’re a d!ck.
Now, what I am having my own little laugh at is the build up by certain Oklahoma State players and coaches leading to the big let down. I hope now Mr. Bowman has learned to be a little humble. Georgia has so much more class than so many other teams it’s refreshing.
Oh, and herewegoalready sucks.

These comments are typical of UGA fans. Before the game, UGA fans were unusually quiet — nice and quiet. After the game became a certainty, a few UGA fans became obnoxious and loud — just like on this board just like a kid mouthing off when surrounded by enough friends to give him courage. That ruined an otherwise class fan experience. UGA fans went from some of the best thanks to a few drunk rednecks. Reminded me of obnoxious Sooner fans who never darkened a classroom there, either. A good win by the team, but a good experience ruined by UGA fans. Good luck to the class UGA fans — probably those that actually have a UGA degree.

Dave in Tampa,
I apologise for the redundancy. You pretty much typed what I was thinking at the time. Cuz’s post was the last one I read before typing my last one. I know I type slow but DAMN! Many times I pause before I post, then spend an hour (or even two) looking up facts on other sites so I won’t hang myself.
When taking that long to finish it’s a good idea to read an updated version of the blog just before posting, which I failed to do.
Again, sorry.

ESPN2 was supposed to carry the game but where I am ESPN started the game after UGA was up 7-0. ESPN dropped the game at some point and ESPN2 picked it up after IL-MO ended. It looked to me like we kept trying to run it up the middle early with no initial results. Getting the ball to the RB’s in space seemed to make a lot of difference. I haven’t looked up the percent run/percent pass figures and am curious as to the split. I thought Massaquoi was strikingly absent except for the tackle on the punter early on. It looked like the passses and runs were being distributed among many players. I think many teams go with a simple offense early on both to keep it simple and to save the good stuff for conference games. I don’t remember Stafford going long at all. Our local paper had OK State as 4th out of 6 in its division of the conference based on Big 12 voting, but I thought they looked decent last night.
I assume all of Ann Arbor is on suicide watch.
I have a coworker who went to OU and is a big fan - he said before he left on Friday, “Good luck and beat Oklahoma State - they’re bad people”.

I have read just about all of the comments and I don’t recall reading anywhere any true fan stating we were going to win the NC. Great game, Dawgs! Moreno made my jaw dropped. He’s definitely something special. I can’t wait to see more of him. Stafford was impressive as well. I saw him look off WRs. I saw him throw balls away when he would have forced throws last season. He looked very good. It can only get better. Of course, there’s room for improvement on any football team. Ours is no exception. I have every confidence that Mark Richt has this team headed in the right direction.
