Gearing up for Gameday!

As the countdown to a new season of football ticks down, the excitement is building in the Bulldog Nation, especially in Athens. Some folks are kind of anxious about opening against a dangerous team like the Cowpokes of Oklahoma State, but I have to say I’d rather have a worthy opponent to kick off the season with rather than a warm-up game against some patsy school with a directional name.

It certainly will be more exciting and will provide an early reality check as to just what kind of team this mix of green linemen and experienced skill players will be.

This year, instead of just the usual first-game pep rally, the UGA Alumni Association has organized a full day of activities under the First Friday umbrella, starting with a Bulldog Breakfast featuring Coach Mark Richt along with former Dawgs David Jacobs and Matt Stinchcomb (for Alumni Association members only, registration required).

From 2 to 3:30 p.m., athletic director Damon Evans will headline a beads, T-shirts and football giveaway at the Tate Plaza outside the UGA Bookstore. (Giveaways also will be held at the Student Learning Center and the various residence halls.) During that same time, they’ll be judging the residence hall decorating contest. Radio stations Bulldog 103.7 and Magic 102.1 will be doing live broadcasts.

UGA legends Dan Magill and Loran Smith will be signing books at the UGA Bookstore from 5 to 7 p.m., and there’ll be a tent sale with 20 percent off UGA merchandise.

And then from 7 to 8 the First Friday Pep Rally, featuring Hairy Dawg, the cheerleaders and the Pep Band, will be held at the Tate Plaza instead of at the Steg as in past years. A gift package for the Georgia-Florida game will be given away that includes game tickets, round-trip air tickets and hotel accomodations on Jekyll Island.

As for Gameday itself, they’ve shrunk the non-alcohol family-friendly tailgating zones down to one small area on North Campus due to lack of demand, and they’ve done their usual tweaking to the East Campus post-game traffic plan that probably will result in minimal improvement. It’ll still take forever to get out of there. Parking and traffic overwhelmingly are the top complaints of UGA fans about the Gameday experience, and that’s not likely to change any time soon.

One tradition that will suffer a bit this season is the Dawg Walk, which is supposed to take place as usual in the Tate Center parking lot below the bridge, but since construction is ongoing there on a new parking deck, there’ll be a limited amount of space for fans. And, of course, only the folks up against the rail on the bridge can really see anything from that vantage point.

Even after the deck is built, I can’t see that being a very good place for the Dawg Walk from now on, so let’s hope the Athletic Association gives some thought to relocating it in the future. A Dawg Walk through at least part of North Campus would be cool, but wouldn’t give the team easy access to the locker rooms so isn’t very likely. A better option would be to stage the Dawg Walk on the East Campus Road side and let the team enter through the new plaza on that side of the stadium.

Once we’re all inside, they’ll be selling a special “collectors series” of Larry Munson drink cups this year, though if the Aramark stands handle those with the same general confusion and disorganization as they did the Uga cups last year (and pretty much everything to do with the sorry state of concessions at Sanford Stadium), getting the complete set will be a lot more time-consuming than it should be.

Once the pre-game music starts, I guess we’ll be subjected yet again to Phil Collins’ dreary “In the Air Tonight” (the popularity of that song with football programs baffles me). It’d be great for them to pick some more Dawg-related songs to play. How about The Beatles’ “Hey Bulldog”? Rufus Thomas’ “Walkin’ the Dog”? Jackie Wilson’s “Doggin’ Around”? The Atlanta Rhythm Section’s “Dog Days”? Just so they don’t ever use Coldplay’s “Yellow” (love the band, hate the color!).

For me, though, the best part of the day leading up to kickoff is when that lone trumpeter plays the opening notes of “Glory, Glory to Old Georgia” from the upper level of the stands.

That’s a thrill every time.

Go Dawgs!

Cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite time of the year to see the annual migration of 92,000 redneck idiots come out of the trailor parks to converge on Sanford stadium to cheer for one of the most overrated teams in the country.

PS. Dan, just because you Teckies couldn’t fill a stadium of 10,000 is no reason to be jealous. And I’m ok with the Dawgs being overrated as long as the streak goes up to 7 this year.

My name is Bill King. I got this goofy looking UGA shirt at Wal-Mart. It wasn’t even on sale.

I just wanted to let you all know that I won’t be at the Tate Plaza area for the T-Shirt giveaway. I happed to like my UGA sweatshirt, and I’m really not in the market for some new game gear.

Now, I will be going by the bookstore for one of those vanity plates for the front of your car that says “Girl”, except the “G” in girl looks like the UGA “G”. I want to get one of those for my sweety. Nothing says “I root for the dawgs” and “I never even went to college” like a redneck woman with one of those bad boys on the front of her 1996 Dodge Neon.

See you guys this Saturday.

Yours,

Bill

Hey Dan, I hold two degrees from UGA, am self employed, and earn well in excess of six figures each year. I am a season ticket holder in the club section of Sanford. I am not sure I qualify as a red-neck however as I do not reside in a trailer.

Based on your comments however, I sense that you are a fan of the “trade school” in Atl. We look forward to the annual whipping we administer to your ilk every year. If you’re a “water lizard” we’ll get you this year. Stafford will outshine “Timmy-boy”. See you in Jax in Oct.

To me, the best part of Game Day is the part leading up to the game. The band, the Dawg Walk, walking around campus and having fun. I don’t have tickets to the game this week, but I almost made plans to come over just for the atmosphere. We are going to the third game (Western Carolina), so I hope the enthusiasm is just as strong then!

Bill, I agree about the mystifying power that Phil Collins seems to have with “In the Air Tonight.” I better suggestion would be the modern rock band Nonpoint’s take on the song. Their cover was featured in the new Miami Vice movie, and in my humble opinion, makes a far better pump-up song that the Collins version.

In any case, once the trumpet sounds, there is only one sound I want to hear - the screaming of 92,000 Dawg fans.

I personally like the Baba O’Riley video, the only change I would make is to include more footage of us against that week’s opponent.

As far as the gameday experience, I think UGA is a good as it gets. Parking and traffic issues are to be expected when 100,000 folks converge on a small college town. Be patient folks and enjoy the atmosphere. We only have a handful of these a year.

Try parking in the Ga. Tech conference center after the game this year. It will take two hours minimum to get out of there, so it could be worse.

I am glad to see that the powers that be have listened to the wishes of the fans and minimized the family friendly zone. Although I appreciate the need for such an area, last year it was much do large. Kudos to the University.

As far as the season and the first game, I believe we have just as good of a chance at winning the SEC as any other year Coach Richt has been here. C’mon guys, Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight? That’s weak noise and conjurs up images of ‘Risky Business’, which is the last thing I want to think about when I’m trying to get fired up for Dawg football. I like the THUNDERSTRUCK idea. What about Metallica’s ENTER SANDMAN or FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS?

Of course, the alumni section behind our bench might not approve of some good, wholesome ROCK. They have a tendancy to just sit on their a** the whole game and not get fired up about anything. They might, and I emphasize MIGHT, stand up and get rowdy in critical 3rd down situations.

Mark my words. When UGA starts playing real football teams, they will be the losers they are. Top teams are not afraid to play top teams. The Yellow Jackets play Notre Dame. Alabama plays Southern Cal. UGA plays Okla. State Teachers College.

Hey all you dawg fans. Sic ‘em! woof woof woof. I love that.

Anyway, just wanted you all to know that someone went ahead and gave me one of the “Girl” UGA vanity plates. Kind of like a secret santa gift I guess. So now my sweety is looking fine in her red 96 Dodge Neon.

Next purchase for me you ask? I want a UGA watch. Something with a faux metal band and a face that lights up with the U-G-A “G” on it! Real classy! Nothing says “I pull for the DAWGS!” and “COPS was filmed on location from my trailer park” like a snazzy UGA wrist watch from the jewlery case at WalMart.

Go Dawgs! Beat the pokes!

August 30, 2007 11:36 AM | Link to this

I thought UGA’s fight song was “I’ve been working on the railroad”.

What is sounds like anyway. Isn’t “Glory Glory”.

And isn’t the original “Glory Glory” song a battle hymn made popular during the Civil War and used by the Northerners? Why does a school with a bunch of rednecks who love the south use a yankee battle hymn as their fight song.

And why use the green bay packers logo? Orignial much?

Hello Dawg Fans, a former Georgia H.S. boy, turned Cowboy Fan here,

We’re expecting a great game Saturday from two quality programs. Obviously, whoever wins will have a great start to their season.

We Cowboy fans feel we have a great offense, great special teams, but a suspect defense. We know you guys have very talented, young players on both sides of the ball, along with great coaches and a great tradition.

I’m curious and have one question for you guys, what concerns you more about Saturday’s game: your young guns on the O-Line going against our mediocre defense, or the new starters on defense going against an experienced and explosive offense?

Or I guess there’s option three and maybe you have no concerns at all and think it’ll be a blowout (which I don’t think will happen).

In any event, good luck Saturday!

Welcome back Spanky. Man I can’t wait!!! I know my boss is gonna be p**d when he finds out, but I’ve spent the last 4 days searching every inch of the internet for any new story I can find about the dawgs. SATURDAY CAN’T GET HERE FAST ENOUGH!!!

By Spanky

August 30, 2007 4:43 PM | Link to this

Cowboy Fan,…I would have to say that our O-Line is the biggest concern for us. Our defense is a hard-hitting squad, and they’re quite honestly, the fastest group we’ve had in a very long time. Our special teams might be a whole other story, though. It’s gonna be difficult replacing Gordon Ely-Kelso.

Cowboy Fan, are you going to the game? If so, you’ll need to come by our tailgate at the Ramsey Center!…You like steak, right?

By I Bleed Orange

August 30, 2007 4:56 PM | Link to this

Spanky, thanks so much for the invite. I would have loved to come by your tailgate and had a chat about our teams. I had a chance to go back home and to the game, but just couldn’t fit it into the program. I’m sure it’ll be a great game and Sandford will be rockin!

By Wes

August 30, 2007 4:59 PM | Link to this

I bleed orange,

I’m probably most concerned w/ our defensive ends. Our secondary is young, but we’ve got good experience throughout…not to mention a few guys that should lay a serious lick or two to Bowman. Brandon Miller is extremely quick and athletic. Word from Athens is he’s been tearing up our tight ends during practice, so I think he’ll be able to keep Pettigrew in check.

Our interior linemen should be solid, 5 man rotation should keep us fresh throughout the game, BUT, if our defensive ends can’t put some pressure on Bobby Reid, and keep him contained when our LBs blitz, we could have some trouble w/ him scrambling.

All in all, our defense is young, but we’ve got what many believe to be the fatest, most athletic defense, as a whole, that Georgia has seen in the Richt era, maybe longer. Should be a great game.

Just look at USC roster , and then pick your jaw up off the ground! It is great for UGA to get maybe 3-4 5-star players a year. We line them up and reject the ones we do not need. While we are winning yet another National title, you guys will have to deal with a top notch rebuilt Gator team you will never beat! Oh yea look out for the other evil genius at the southern USC Steve Supurrier.

My name is Bill King. I bought this goofy looking UGA shirt at WalMart. It wasn’t even on sale.

Folks, I have an announcement. I bought a new UGA hat. I hate to retire my old one that I bought at Quick Trip for $4.99, but it was a different shade of red than my shirt.

Let me tell you about it. It’s white, and has an updated version of Uga on it, and he’s wearing a hat turned around backwards on there. How bout that? I got a hat with Uga wearing a hat on it. Now my sweety tried to tell me that only the younger fans are wearing that style hat, cause it matches their white T-shirts and faux gold chains, but I just had to have one.

Let me tell you, I am proud of that hat. Nothing says “Go Dawgs!” and “I went to Valdosta State but tell people who don’t know that I went to UGA” like some of this sweet UGA gear I get to wear.

Go Dawgs!

Windyhill—-Playing DIXIE would indeed spike up the fans. Unfortunately it can’t be played since our liberal a** administration ban it back in the 70’s? Took the DIXIE off the redcoat ban too. The AJC no longer covers DIXIE like the dew either. When I was at UGA late 50’s early 60’s the Dixie Redcoat band marched into Sanford playing DIXIE and the fans went wild. Oh well, so much for political correctness. “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS” would work because at the end of the season we will be champions. Go Dawgs. Footnote—hats off to Ole Miss. DIXIE still played several times at each home game.

I have two tickets and I’m not going. Actually, I have a ticket to the Auburn/Kansas State game too (getting my master’s degree from here in December - got my bachelor’s from UGA in December of 2005). I’m not going to this game either. I have too much work to do. One of my professors has assigned a research paper which is due on Monday. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Georgia should lose, and I wouldn’t be that surprised if Auburn loses too. Kansas State beat Texas when they were ranked in the top 5 last year or so I think I heard. Not sure if it’s true and don’t care enough to look it up; and Oklahoma State is supposed to be quite good.
