Should Richt be backtracking?

Coach Richt just issued a statement backing down somewhat from his frustrated comments last week about UGA’s lack of an indoor practice facility. He says he wasn’t forced to issue the clarifying statement and I’ll take him at his word on that. But I actually found his frankness last week refreshing. This is something Georgia football has needed for a long time. Didn’t they promise Jim Donnan an indoor facility back when they were trying to keep him from leaving for North Carolina? And yet nearly a decade later we still don’t have one.

What do you think, should Richt be apologizing for venting, or should he start learning how to throw his weight around a bit more?

Here’s the statement:

Richt Issues Statement on Indoor Practice Facility Comments Courtesy: UGA Sports Communications Release: 08/26/2007

Statement from UGA football Coach Mark Richt Aug. 26, 2007

I would like to make a public statement following up on my recent comments pertaining to our facilities at UGA.

First I am very proud to be at the University of Georgia. I have poured a lot of my life and energy into this program and I’m thankful every day for where God has placed me. I’m also thankful for the leadership of our University, Athletic Association, and Athletic Board.

Friday’s comments regarding the lack of an indoor practice facility were a knee-jerk reaction to a series of events that happened throughout the day ending with the cancellation of practice due to a storm in the area.

When I actually read my comments late in the day on Saturday I was very disappointed in what I said and the way I said it. It appeared to be someone who was ungrateful for what he had and that is certainly not the case. For that, I want to apologize to President (Michael) Adams, (athletic director) Damon Evans, and the Bulldog Nation.

I am very blessed at UGA and Damon and I have a great working relationship. In fact, we have been working together in planning a project that will provide a major facility improvement.

I want to end by saying that this statement is heartfelt and I was not asked to make it by anyone other than my own conscience.

Would not expect anything else out of this Christ driven man. We are blessed to have this great leader in the fold of our Bulldog nation. And by the way, a indoor facility would be nice to have, well keep praying for it,thanks Coach Richt, for everything you have done at UGA!

Coach Richt’s comments may have been out of order for the time, but they were right on for the need. I’m sure we all know frustrations at some time, and his were just that.

Mike Adams and Damon Evans ought to be ashamed Georgia’s facilities are sub standard for the SEC. Georgia has the most profitable sports program in all of college sports ancd we can’t get an indoor prctice facility?

Someone is being obstructionist, and if everybody thinks a great coach like Richt won’t be offered deals that will be hard to turn down you just aren’t being realistic.

Somebody better start paying attention or we will lose him.

I’m disappointed that he issued that statement. He was telling the truth and for some reason(we’re planning this or that) it doesn’t happen. Coach Richt has set such an outstanding example of the best kind of leadership since he’s been in Athens and now I would like to see him start to speak out more. Take a more vocal leadership place in the university as it affects the football team and other areas. Thanks Coach for the example you set so far in Athens.

I doubt that God/Christ cares a whit about UGA football, but it’s apparent that Mark is a class person and was probably over-reacting to a statement that wasn’t that big of a deal.

I hope this retraction is not a sign of fear of the president’s office. Now that the Stegeman facility is done maybe a football building can be started. Ironically, without football there would be no other sports at UGA. Gymnastics would dispute that but I’ll stick with that statement.

Coach Richt was oobviously a little frustrated over not having that indoor practice facility. You’d think the school could get it done out of all of the revenue the football team generates. Coach Richt is a kind-hearted man who just got a little upset. It’s understandable.

Before the indoor practice facility for football, don’t the gymanstics, tennis, swimming, diving, and equestian teams need more equipment and facilities? I mean these are the teams which are winning national championships for the university?

CMR is a man of character who was felt the delivery of his concerns was not in keeping with the message he delivers to others. I sincerely hope such honesty will not be considered as weak or pressured in the least. I believe his apology was based on the potential perception of what he had to say as being without gratitude and humility. However he did not seem to back down from his topic of the need the program has to remain competitive. He simply stated that he regrets the manner in which the message was delivered and made no claim to have been in error about the oeverall content itself. They do need the facility and the fundraising will most likely be amped up accordingly.

Coach Richt has no reason to apologize for his comments. I live in a small community outside of Austin, TX and the local highschool team has an indoor facility that was recently built with funds from a $127mm bond issuance by the school district, (Lake Travis High School). If a high school can have the expectation for an indoor facility, why can’t a major university expect an indoor facility?

Hey Mark, no need for apologies. You’re a 2nd rate coach at a ‘wannabe’ university! Nobody cares. Now go spoon your QB, he likes that sort of stuff.

I think Coach Richt is a very humble and God fearing man. I also think that what he said was completely true. I believe his statement was driven more by how he spoke and not what he spoke. As a Christian, how message is deliverd can be as important as what message is delivered. However, I dont have any idea why an indoor facility has not been completed.

I think Coach Richt was right to issue that statement. After all, he was only following his conscience. He realized how his comments on Friday were born of frustration and did not reflect well on UGA. What a great and godly example he is setting for his players and so many others. How easy it would have been to bury his conscience in prideful justification, but Coach did the right thing (and he made a good point about our facilities.

Speaking of which- Let’s Git-R-Done!

Mark Richt needs to keep his mouth shut about the indoor facility and coach football. As previous posters have said, Florida doesn’t have one and they are in the middle of a state that is hotter than hades and it has rainstorms most every day. UGA spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in giving him two Field Turf fields that are fine for practicing on in the rain and the only time they can’t be used is when lightning is in the area. I think he regrets saying it but come on he’s got facilities other schools would kill for and the basketball team is playing in a venue that should be an embarrassment to every person that calls themselves a Dawg Fan. Just win Mark and leave the other stuff to people that know how to run an athletic department.

The team doesn’t play inside to January, they don’t need to be practicing indoors. They need to be fit to play outside in this 100 degree heat on Saturday.

It’s good for the players. Just make sure to take plenty of water breaks.

I have no qualms with making an indoor facility, but where would we put it? Over the existing practice field? Could they put that up during an offseason without affecting normal football practices?

Methinks Richt is a little peeved the basketball and gymnastics teams just got their own brand new practice facility, when its his team that generates all the $$$.

The indoor facility is not about avoiding heat. The NCAA prohibits outdoor practices in thunderstorms due to lightning, but don’t let the facts slow your mouth down.

Here we have a coach who is publicly apologizing to the school president and AD for making comments about not having a facility that was promised a decade ago, and across the border to the east they have a coach who has threatened his school president and AD into making policy changes in order to give his recruits preferential treatment or he’s outta there!

The second game on our schedule presents two coaches who cannot possibly be any more different from each other. The classic battle between good and evil, generosity and greed. I’ll be praying for the good guy!

Maybe we could ask Mr. Pickens from Okie St. if he could fund an indoor practice facility for us in return for adding his team to our tough slate. Heck, that’s chump change to him. GO DAWGS!!!!

John you got it. Coach Richt was frustrated practices had to be canceled due to lightning, not rain or heat. An indoor facility would be a great addition and something I personally would like. But it does not win championships(SEC). Coaching and players win the championships. We have a great Coach in CMR and a bunch of fired up Dawgs. Bring on T. Boone’s Pokes.

Why not make the indoor facility duel use? Design the facility to be more than just a bubble (which would be perfect as well as cheap, if that’s all you really need). Design the facility to be an indoor football field but have the ability to host indoor track meets. And heck, why not make it triple use and make it so it could host indoor tennis? That way, many other teams could get something out of it as well.

First of all with all due respect RODAWG, the good Lord has nothing to do with this fight. I’m sure He could care less if our beloved Dawgs have an indoor or not. That being said, given that CMR is a good Christian man and a praying man as well, I will trust his judgement and agree that they need an indoor facility. In fact, if I was Mr. Adams, or Mr. Evans and CMR asked for 2 donkeys, a monkey, and a jungle gym, I would everything in my power to make it so….and quickly. GOOOO DAWGS!!!!

Start construction on the indoor facility - IMMEDIATELY!!!! Also, the Florida game needs to be a home/away contest. The trip to Jax is not fair to the players- this is one tradition that needs to be eliminated.

Also, Adams is responsible for Rick’s being at Georgia, if everyone remembers Adams wanted Donnan OUT, Dooley resisted. I AM NO FAN OF VINCE!!!

I was really shocked to learn Ga does not have an indoor practice facility. A major program like this without that facility? That is pretty pathetic. What in the world do you people do with all of the donations? This should be easy. Georgia is now about 10 years behind other major schools when it comes to facilities. If I were recruiting against UGA, it would be easy. Just look at the facilities.

FOR SOUTH CAROLINA FANS out there….’COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier stood by troubled safety Emanuel Cook on Friday, saying his arrest on a gun charge — which resulted in his suspension from the school, making him ineligible to play for the Gamecocks — was a case of being “at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The 19-year-old player was charged with unlawful possession of a pistol, according to a police report. Cook and James Gore III were arrested by university police Thursday night at a parking lot near campus dormitories, the report said.

“He’s a good young man and obviously was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Spurrier said Friday. “You’ve got to choose your friends. Supposedly, the gun was not his (Cook’s) but he was with a guy with a gun. You’re guilty by association.”

Hhhmmmm…. Guess this gives new meaning to Spurrier’s ‘C**&Fire’ offence.

oops ” indoor practice facility”

By MarkRichtFan

August 27, 2007 8:55 PM | Link to this

The AJC omitted the most interesting part of the story. Last spring CMR was asked which was more important to him: (1) the addition to the Butts-Mehre Building or (2) an indoor practice facility. He chose the addition to Butts-Mehre, and the Athletic Board appropriated the money for the design of the addition. I am sure that CMR realized that he set his own priorities, and the indoor practice facility was not number one on his list. He is a gentleman, and he did not like the way his comments sounded in print, so he set the record straight.

As I understand it, the future plans for an indoor practice facility are much more elaborate than a simple bubble. It will be a mixed use facility that will be second to none. CMR knows that it cannot all be done at once. He is willing to wait so that UGA can have the very best.

s.e.dawg,i guess what bothers me most is that some fans, some of the players, and i think, some of the coaches don’t think we can win in jax. that is a bunch of baloney. we won in jax the whole dooley period, often with an inferior team. i don’t remember how many sec titles we knocked uf out of,but that is one reason they hate us. richt has to believe in himself, and his men, then we will win. as fans,we have to believe it too. ya’ll can cut tail and run if you want to,this old soldier will be fighting a rear guard action on the bridge and leave his body on the field. i’ll be damned if i’ll run from a bunch of gators! our big old line should know how to run block by november,so i want the guys to line up,knock those fast linemen back, and ram that ball down their throats untill we break their spirits as well as their noses. one way to defeat speed, maybe the best way,is to run right at it,with enough misdirection thrown in to keep them off their guard. we are young at the o line, but we should be deep by then, our o line injurys are pretty minor. we should be able to keep fresh linemen and backs in the game and pound them. once we have them with 8 or nine men in the box, then we can throw the bomb. urban can run the spread all he wants,it does no good if we play keep-away with our running game. i would like a win,but what i really want is to beat the hell out of them! i want us to score 50 points! i don’t believe in running up the score, but i want payback fo what sos did to us in athens.
