Bland Dogcast isn’t the way to go

It wasn’t unexpected that UGA would recruit a former Dawgs player to bolster its radio broadcast crew in the wake of play-by-play legend Larry Munson giving up road work. But unfortunately Damon Evans and Co. have gone with one of the blandest choices possible in picking former Georgia QB Eric Zeier.

This is no knock on Zeier as a player. He was a fantastic quarterback who achieved a lot considering he played on generally mediocre teams that weren’t well coached. With someone like Mark Richt guiding him, Zeier probably would have won a Heisman.

But as a broadcaster? Strictly three yards and a cloud of dust. I listened to the season Zeier did a few years back with “The Fifth Quarter Show” on WNGC, and I don’t think he said a single memorable thing. It was all generic coachspeak.

His replacement on the post-game call-in show, the always quotable Kevin Butler, was a vast improvement, and as I’ve said here before, he would have been my choice to add to the regular broadcast team.

Yeah, Zeier is the safe choice in that he won’t say anything controversial. And he’ll be knowledgeable about what’s happening on the field. But radio coverage needs more than that. Besides that distinctive voice, the main thing the Georgia broadcasts will be losing in not having Munson is COLOR. And based on his “Fifth Quarter” work, I can’t see Zeier adding much in that department.

Come next season, let the Butler do it.

TWILB Dawg,

Buck Belue lies out his you know whut like there aint no tomorow. All the time claiming he graduated from UGA when he aint.

Here is a quote from the Wikipedias on Buck Belue’s lying butt:

“Contrary to his many deceitful assurances, Buck Belue never graduated from the University of Georgia and eventually received his degree from Valdosta State University many years after dropping out of UGA.”

Now stick that there in your pipe and smoke it!

Dantzler is the obvious choice to join Howard on the broadcast, very energetic and temendously knowledgeable. While Butler would be an upgrade over Zeier, JD is better still. And by the way, Belue is a hack. Anyone who has ever heard him do a game on CSS or any other channel should agree.

I agree but I want to take it one step deeper. Scott Howard is not a talented play by play man. His basketball calls are full of we’ve got it, they’ve got it, we shoot, etc.

Besides his lack of technical skill, he tries so desperately to be like Munson, he becomes a parody of himself.

If Scott is the permanent replacement, with Zeier, our brodacasts are doomed to mediocrity.

This is one Dawg fan that will turn off my radio.

Dantzler is very knowledgable and a great “homer” who is a lot of fun to listen to when he gets excited.

BTW: I was doing some planning for next year and just checked the 2008 Football Schedule. OMG, have you seen this beast? Start with GSU then away to USC and AZ ST., back home for three SEC teams (Bama, UT & Vandt) in a row and then at LSU the week before JAX! Finish away at KY and AU and finally GT at home to close. Now dat’s a row to hoe.

In my opinion, this needs to be the last year of the broadcast as we know it. Let’s give Larry, Loran, etc. a big send off this year with a season long celebration of 40 years together. Let’s hear old interviews, highlights, favorite moments, etc. Then let’s blow the show up, and spend the offseason putting together a new fresh show. Let’s think outside the box on hiring new talent. I would love to bring in someone with ties to the school, but if a good match is not found let’s look elsewhere. Like we did when we found Larry.

I know the whole purpose of the show really is to sell ads 3 hrs before and after the game, but we can do better than what we have know. I love Larry and Loran as much as anyone, but their time has passed.

defacto dawg: I’ve got to disagree with you about Scott Howard. His basketball broadcasts are excellent. He paints a clear picture, is very articulate, plus he accurately names players and describes the action in a very detailed fashion (something that has been challenging for Larry the past several years). Does he say “we” and “them”? Yes. BUT, he is a graduate of UGA. He bleeds red and black. He’s passionate, and that’s what college athethics are all about. He and Danzler make a good team. I agree the Zeier is a bit bland, but I’m willing to give it a try before I critize him.

WTF? That’s all I can say. I thought it was already set that Howard and Dantzler would be doing it togheter??? They do a great job with the basketball games and J.D. is a lot of fun to listen to on 960 here in Athens, whether he’s talking about football, basketball, baseball, or the periodic table of elements, it doesn’t matter. Didn’t see anybody mention Matt Robinson. He is very polished. But If I had a vote, I would go with Butler. He has a great since of hum or and is very excitable. Two things going against him though. His son will be on the team the next 4 (or 5) years and he never played with AD Evans. I like Belue and Dantzler, and will be listening to Zeier. I wouldn’t listen to Munson call a Tech game. I love Munson, but I listen because it is the Dawgs. You people that say you will not listen to Zeier… well I just do not understand why you are listening in the first place.

Zeier was the greatest Dawg to never bask in the glory of an SEC Championship in my lifetime, with the possible exception of Hines Ward. Too bad he arrived in Athens at the wrong time, because he was a heck of a quarterback. I wish him well in his broadcast career.

By Mike

Terrible choice. I loved Zeier as a player, but he is not good on the radio. Butler would have been a good choice, although I would have missed hearing him on the fifth quarter show. What I don’t get is why they don’t go the obvious route and put Dantzler in there with Scott. They are great together on basketball broadcasts and Dantzler would no doubt add the color that Zeier certainly lacks. Not to mention that his knowledge of UGA history is probably only second to Dan Magill.

Buck, while a hero to Dawgfans, has proven his mediocrity on CSS broadcasts. Zeier, a flop on the fifth quarter show a few seasons back, is equally boring. Jeff Dantzler is this generations version of Coach Magill: he knows more about Georgia athletics and history than most people walking the earth, and has a great radio voice as evidenced by his work on the basketball and baeball broadcasts. But remember, Damon and Zeier were teammates, right?

By Buck should be the One

Buck has NEVER claimed to have graduated from UGA. He played two sports at UGA then was offered an opportunity to work as quarterback’s coach on the field at Valdosta not just be a grad assistant. He has done what 99.9% of UGA grads have never done and that is win a national championship in football at UGA. He’s a GA native and UGA national champion former QB. the best thing about zeier is that he is not belue. if you listen to kincaid and belue on 680 you have heard belue get more and more of the belief that people listen to the show to hear him {belue}. he is such an obnoxious a*. but i also don’t think that just because scott howard has done color for many years that he can step in and be a successs at play by play. if howard is not VERY GOOD then i think we should go completely outside our current crew for the replacement. remember, munson was an outsider at one time.

Word traveling around the UGA students is a red-out for the opening home game against OSU. Many of us really want this to happen and for it to work successfully. … Please PLEASE get the word out about this red-out to as many friends and fans as you possibly can. A red-out against a visiting Big XII program on national television would give the Bulldog squad added publicity and attention, and we as students feel it would energize the team and the crowd to no end. It makes me cringe for any of you to think “Luck” Belue has any chance to get in the radio booth. You want to talk about a freeloader who’s been riding a wave for 20+ years…..? He completed ONE pass (that was not much to write home about), and a wideout took it the distance…the WR did all the work, and this clown wants us to worship him. Not gonna happen. Hell, do any of you know how many passes he completed in the National Championship Game? Yep…ONE! Look it up.

I’m just tired of hearing him brag, and talk about “back when I played….”. Helen Keller would have been twice the QB he was. Just hand it off left, hand it off right, hand it off….

And to hear his squeaky little voice on those sorry “replays” on CSS with that Stewart guy are repulsive.

So, giving the job to “EZ” at least solidifies that a person with game knowledge will be on the headset. If they EVER put Belue in the booth, I’m listening to the visiting team’s broadcast!

On another note….Jeff Dantzler may be the most knowledgable human breathing when it comes to UGA Athletics. The kid obviously has nothing better to do than to mentally record sports history, but you’ve got to hand it to him. He’s also energetic, and fun to listen to. However, the famous baseball game on Valentines Day when he asked the girls what color panties they were wearing probably set his chances back a bit.

Nobody’s ever going to replace Munson, so just enjoy him as long as he’s on the mic. My take on it is this…Sanford Stadium will actually get louder when he retires. At that point all of the old men with radio headsets on in the stands will be taking those things off and making noise, rather than keeping it to a whisper to hear what Munson will spill out. Put that to thought gentlemen.

GO DAWGS!!!!!!

I can’t figure how Jeff Dantzler didn’t get the nod. He has been tremendous on Ga. Basketball. He has the passion of Munson.

Anyone that wants to hear Butler do color is nuts. He could not color if you gave him the crayons. He just wants to talk about Butler. I will retire my headphones if I have to listen to that bloated ego. He John Kasay is better than him, how does Butler get so much press?

Belue stinks —- I agree with you on both counts. Buck is a good guy but lacks the talent to be a true color guy on a high profile broadcast. The CSS replays prove it. I can put up with him on 680 because he does have a few decent contacts and there is nothing else to listen to that time of day anyway. You hit the nail on the head about all the older fans sitting on thier hands inside Sanford! Take those headsets off during play and make some noise. You can get updates, ETC. during the down times. Show your Red, come ealier, be LOUD and let’s kick some Cowgirl butt!!!!!!!!!

One more thought. What about Terry Hoge? It sounds like he has a pretty sweet deal going on out in NOCAL with his winery(He even produces a wine named “Between the Hedges”)but maybe he could fly out for football w-ends to do the color. He has the strogest background than anyone else that is being mentioned. If anyone cares— there was a small article about his wine operation in ESPN the rag - I mean the magizine - last week.

**Dear godawg,

I am sorry that you aren’t digging my UGA gameday attire. I bought this shirt from Wal Mart several years ago, and it wasn’t even on sale!

Look, what else screams “Go Dawgs!” and “Pass me a cold PBR” than these stone-washed jean shorts, this hat I bought at QuickTrip for $4.99, my Wal-Mart sweatshirt, and these sweet Corona sandals I got down at PCB?

This is DAWG NATION, BABY!! DEAL WITH IT!**

—-But seriously, my corona sandals are getting pretty worn out, so if you know where I can get some red UGA crocs…oh man, those would be sweet.

I am so excited. I’m going to buy some of those Crocs when I go to the OSU game. Real men WEAR CROCS!

Thanks for backing me up on my UGA gameday clothing! Nothing says “I PULL FOR THE DAWGS” and “I SLEEP WITH MY SISTER” like my slightly soiled WalMart UGA sweatshirt, some stylish CROCS, a broken-in ball cap, and the finest jean shorts in the trailer park.

GO DAWGS!

When I write my next piece on here, I am going to mention you.

Thanks again.

Wow! I’ve never seen some many people full of hate for one person! Or could it be jealousy? You’ve probably never picked up a football in your entire life, so you’ve decided to criticize someone who won a National Championship no matter how many times they “threw” the ball. Have you personally ever asked Buck Belue where he graduated or did you just assume? Buck works hard at what he does and does a great job… just look at he ratings for the Buck and Kincaid show. Myrtle, since you’re so good at looking up information, you’ll know his show is #4 here in the Atlanta market. And if Buck is such a has been, tell me why more than 25 years later everyone is still talking about that play like it was yesterday? Yes, Buck is the most logical choice to fill Larry Munsons shoes. By the way, Munson didn’t graduate from UGA either!

THE ONLY GUY WHO HAS RADIO EXPERIENCE BESIDES THE SHOW NOW. 6.) LOVES UGA AND WOULD BE GREAT ON THE AIR CALLING THE GAMES. 7.) FROM MY KNOWLEDGE, HAS NOT ASKED FOR THE JOB AND BY THIS RESPONSE I FEEL SORRY FOR EZ. 8.) IS A DEDICATED FAMILY MAN WHO WOULD REPRESENT UGA WITH CLASS. 9.) Kelly,

Well Larry Munsun aint claimed to of graduated from the University. Buck Belue done it many a time. It aint our place to judge. Thats the Lord’s place. But it is Buck Belue’s place to publicly apolgize for lying like a rug regular and to tell us why he done it. Is he ashamed of his degree from Valdosta? If I was Valdosta I would be aggrivated with him on a count of he dont want to admit he done got a degree from Valdosta. As long as he tells us why hes done what hes done with the lying and shows us some remorse for his evil ways, then we can move on and consider him a Christian.

I aint jealous of Buck Belue. I feel sorry for him and we all ought to pray for his soul and pray for him to accept Jesus as his Holy Savior and stop pretending and lying all the time. It dont matter that he aint graduated from the University of Georgia and instead graduated from Valdosta. He aint even got no call to lie. I aint graduated from no place but I aint gone lie and say I done graduated.

I think instead of Zeier, UGA should have hired former dawg QB Preston Jones. I listen to his broadcasts out of SC and he does a great job. He has the color, knowledge and the experience to go along with Scott Howard. At least Ray Goof can’t screw Jones anymore.

Well we know he lied many a time. Thats plain as day and there aint no getting around it. But what I want to know about Buck Belue is why he had to leave the University of Georgia in the first place. Him claiming he graduated from the University of Georgia when he aint makes me suspicious that the didnt leave there on his own and go to no Valdosta since he dont even want to claim that his degree is from Valdosta. I just want to know what he done that the University of Georgia kicked him out. It was something with out morals and un-Christian I can promise you that! If it hadnt of been, they wouldnt of kicked him out and he wouldnt of had to go sneaking off to Valdosta and get his degree from them folks. Theres something mighty fishing going on with that boy.

OK myrtle here’s buck’s personal bio: -left UGA to play baseball for the Montreal Expos organization 1981-1983. -left minor league baseball to play for Jacksonville Bulls (USFL) football league 1983-1985. -offered quarterback coach job by Mike Cavan at Valdosta State while he finished his degree.

Mike Cavan was a longtime running back coach under Vince Dooley at UGA.

Before you open your big mouth, please know what your talking about. Buck hasn’t even applied or talked to UGA about the position, poor Eric Zeier.

I don’t think anyone named to the position of announcer would have made everyone happy. Maybe we will miss the way Munson called the games, but possibly we might learn more about the game and not his exclamations. I think he catered more to some good old boys sitting on the tailgate of a pickup swilling a few beers who care nothing about how the game is played except that Georgia won. A win is good for another trip to the beer store and a ride across the campus with a red ‘G” on a flag wavin from one of its windows.
