Meet the Bulldogs, past and present!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Picture Day has always been the main summer tradition for Georgia football fans, but it looks like the Stinchcomb brothers have established another one, as their Countdown to Kickoff marks its second year this weekend in a much expanded format.
Last year’s event, where fans got to meet and get autographs from Georgia players past and present at the Woodruff Practice Fields, was a big success, a brief but intense thundershower in the middle notwithstanding! This year, Matt and Jon Stinchcomb have added a golf tournament and a Dawg-themed auction on Friday to the Saturday session (which, like last year, will also feature kiddie attractions in addition to the meet-and-greet).
The event allows hundreds of Bulldog fans the opportunity to meet more than 50 current and former UGA players. All proceeds go to the UGA College of Education Pediatric Clinic for children with disabilities, Georgia Transplant Foundation, Children’s Tumor Foundation and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
I asked Matt for an updated rundown of which past Bulldog greats (many still playing in the NFL) that fans can expect to see Saturday, and he gave me this partial list:
Charles Grant (SaInts), Greg Blue (Vikings), Max Jean-Gilles (Eagles)Tim Jennings (Colts), Leonard Pope (Cardinals), Randy McMichael (Rams), Thomas Davis (Panthers), D.J. Shockley (Falcons), Nic Clemons (Falcons), Tony Taylor (Falcons), Martrez Milner (Falcons), Quentin Moses (Raiders), Dennis Roland (Bucs), Jon Stinchcomb (Saints), Matt Stinchcomb (Bucs, retired), Jeff Harper (1980 national champ starter), Tim Morrison (1980 national champ starter), Frank Ros (1980 captain), Pat McShea (1980 national champ starter), Jim Blakewood (1980 national champ starter), Nat Hudson (1980 national champ starter), Nick Jones (2006 captain), Tra Battle, David Jacobs, Dan Inman, Mario Raley and Danny Wheeler.
As Matt put it: “We got a lot of good ones, plus members of the current team and incoming freshmen (e.g. Rennie Curran) will also be in attendance.”
The players, past and present, will be on hand from 3 to 6 p.m. at the practice fields.
Matt also wants to make sure fans know about the golf tournament and reception for sponsors on Friday at the UGA golf course, where fans will be playing with former players and Coach Mark Richt (registration is at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.). Also Friday evening there’s a VIP reception at the Foundry Park Inn (www.foundryparkinn.com) at 7 p.m. for the sponsors and players (doors open at 7 p.m.).
Matt said some of the items up for auction at the reception include: a chance to be a Dawg for a Day (do everything with the team on game day except play), a chance to watch the Oklahoma State game in the press box and attend Richt’s post-game press conference, getting to spend a quarter of a game with Larry Munson and Scott Howard in the broadcast booth, a pre-game flyover in one of the Red Baron Squadron biplanes, a chance to climb the ladder and conduct the Redcoats when they do the spell-GEORGIA cheer at halftime, a trip to New Orleans for the Saints-Falcons game, the opportunity to attend a taping of Paula Deen’s Food Network show in Savannah and more.
As Matt put it, “I don’t know where else you could get to do some of this stuff we have to win.”
For ticket info on Countdown to Kickoff, go to www.ugakickoff.com and click on “Tickets and Sponsorship” in upper left-hand corner.
On and off the field, Matt and brother Jon have always been the kind of Dawgs the Bulldog Nation could be proud of. Here’s a chance to tell ’em so in person and to give the current players some words of encouragement as they endure summer drills.
AFTER MUNSON: I was interested to see a column Buck Belue wrote for the Savannah paper last week in which he talked about the need to shake up the UGA football broadcasts after Larry Munson switches off his microphone for the last time. Belue feels “Georgia broadcasts have grown stale” and thinks a strong color analyst is needed, preferably a former Dawg. He notes UGA is one of the few schools that doesn’t have a former player as part of the broadcast team. Besides himself (ahem), Belue offers up Mike Cavan, Eric Zeier, John Lastinger and Matt Robinson, all of whom have broadcast experience, as possibilities. I haven’t heard Cavan, Lastinger and Robinson work a game as a broadcaster, but I have heard Belue, and like I’ve said before, I think he’d be better off in the Loran Smith spot on the sideline. As for Zeier, his time on the “Fifth Quarter Show” a few seasons back was strictly snoozeville. He never said anything the least bit memorable. His replacement, Kevin Butler, is still my choice for a former player in the booth. What do you think?

What I have have said all along is that Jeff Dantzler needs to be in the booth. As a Dawg fan who also listens to Basketball & Baseball via the radio & internet, the passion & knowledge that Jeff brings to the broadcast would definetly be a plus on the football side. Scott & Jeff are already a team on the basketball side , the chemistry between the two of them is already there. Let Dantzler in the booth!!!

All I ask is that the internet radio broadcast you purchase on georgiadogs.com be played at the same volume this year instead of muffling the play-by-play and then blaring the station ID. I can’t be the only one with this opinion.

Swollen, that’s hilarious and should definitely be submitted to the powers that be. I want a fan that lives and breathes Georgia football 365 days a year and is the UGA equivalent of the old “Ditka/superfans” SLN sketch. Get him some drinks, incite him, then hand him the mike for 5 minutes to do some color or play by play.

Personally, I sometimes listen to Buck on ‘680 The Fan’ and while I think a lot of Buck, there’s something about his sloowww voice that I don’t like. He a smart broadcaster, has a very good since of humor, and he’s definitely a likable guy if just for the mere reason that he led the 1980 NC team. But when you find that you’re reminding yourself of that constantly just so you won’t change the dial, well, that should say enough. Buck would be good in a back-up role in the booth. I haven’t figured out who should be the lead broadcaster, though.

NOT Zeir.
I personally don’t have anything against Zeier. But he seems a little phony when he’s on the air. It’s almost like he’s trying to set up some sort of future political career. He doesn’t seem genuine at all.

Sounds like Buck Belue wants a job in the booth. Kind of low class to me to write such an article promoting yourself. Don’t go dissing Larry around me, dude. He is THE MAN in my book. I’ve suffered through your broadcasts before and it was excrutiating to listen to you.

Buck would be a fine play-by-play man and could use his experience to interact with a color guy.
Matt Robinson would be ideal. I’ve heard him several times with Jaguar broadcasts; and he is excellent. But, why not reach really deep and go to someone like Lynn Hughes (now an insurance executive here in Atlanta) or Jake Scott (if he can be pried from Hawaii). Either of those guys would be more like the old schook Alex Hawkins and would give the network a great jolt.

Swollen, That’s a great idea, but we should take it a step further like they do in England, where they get a fan of each soccer team in the booth and they go back and forth at each other during the game.

I live in Florida so I get the Florida stations and Auburn.
Whoever is the second banana just needs to offer comment occasionally.
I think Buck would be WAY out of his league.
He may have a National Championship ring but he would be 4th string QB (maybe) on this team.
Radio does not require the constant analysis. Listen to the Braves, the play by play guy leads.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not remember UGA ever having a former player in the booth. And for 40 years the football broadcasts have been legendary. Howard and Dantzler have proven to be a successful combo in basketball. Possibly Butler on the sidelines.

I would choose dead air over Jeff Dantzler. He was tunred down by Weber State for the football job there. If Weber State did not want him why do you think he would be good here? Scott Howard and Kevin Butler sounds like a good pair. With Belue on the sideline. The only good thing with Jeff in the booth would be the fact that I would not need to carry my radio into any more games.

Can Buck do a game without a nasal tone, flat, phony “WOW” 50 times? He must know other expressions. Loran needs to be removed from the postgame lockeroom interview. There has to be other ways of asking Coach Richt “just how important were those touchdowns you scored?”

Scott Howard or someone outside the circle. Munson came in from Vandy and from what I have read he was not exactly well-loved right away. There is a pharmacist in Coffee County that does play-by-play for the Coffee High Trojans. He has the voice for it.
No one will be as good as Munson and I’d hate to be the one coming directly after him. If Belue gets it, I will be forced to listen to VERNE LUNDQUIST when UGA plays on CBS or Billy Curry on ESPN2. Lord help me! haha. :)

Bill and Belue bashers, et al. Buck has never lobbied publicly for the job. The man would never do so as long as Larry was still in the seat, whether all games or just the home ones. I agree Buck wouldn’t be the best choice and he would tell you as much himself. A few quotes you left out from the man himself in the article that would shed a little light. Before you claim that Buck has nominated himself for the job, put his words in context: “Since one man cannot replace Munson, a two-man booth appears to be one way to go. Allow a color-analyst to really have a voice. And before you accuse me of trying to position myself for the job, realize that Damon Evans and the decision makers have a multitude of directions they could go.” He then includes the list, Bill, that you referenced. Buck continues by saying “And as far as my interest goes, well what former Georgia player with a broadcasting background wouldn’t want to talk football with the Bulldog nation. It would be an honor. It would be fun.” Hardly the words of someone who is lobbying for a job. More like someone who would be honored if the job were offered. Nothing more, nothing less.

Attention all Bulldog Fans!! I mentioned to the Dawg Nation before there is a guy you are not mentioning that should be considered when a replacement is necessary. DJ Jones a former Bulldog DB who is down in Columbus Georgia. DJ is a multi talented budding sports broadcasting superstar mark my words. This guy is talented on the radio and on television. He’s had his own regional sports shows for several years. The Auburn folks even gave him propts when he teamed with Jim Fyffe doing Arena football in 01 and 02. WSB you need to look this guy up! Just ask Loran, Damon, or Coach Dooley about him.

Bill,
I like the idea of Butler. Kickers always have interesting personalities (anyone remember Billy Bennett?) and are generally some of the smarter guys on the team. Why not a former O-lineman? People always say that guys on the o-line are the smartest, most personable guys on the team.
I like Buck Belue on his and Kinkade’s afternoon show, but that’s about it. I absolutely loathe his Comcast Dawgs rebroadcasts. He’s a little slow behind the play, and just doesn’t explain the events well.

Munson painting the radio dial from right to left like a football field is the reason we all turn down boring network personalities and turn up Larry. It doesn’t matter which “HOMER” UGA puts in the booth. Dawg fans don’t care about the quality of the broadcast. They just want to hear how great the DAWGS are ( as they beat up on Podunk State ); and oh yeah, they need to hear those dynamic sideline comments from Loren….what a pro he is.

The Stinchcomb brothers are huge assets for the team and school. The idea of family is a powerful one. Matt,Jon and others who see UGA as permanent parts of their lives should be the models for the program.Coach Richt clearly understood this when he took the job.In the last few years as recruiting has expanded to more of a national focus he may have lost that idea a bit.Let’s forget about the rent a players.A good kid from New Jersey or California will want a sense of community as well as one from Macon or Rome….Forget about Chip Carey coming in, he’s got his sites set on his grand dads job with the Cubs.

He will make it 3-4 years in the league but will get cut because of his weight and lack of ability to read defenses. That’s why he was drafted in the 4th rd. Has anyone heard Butler on the 5th quarter show? Man, does he love to hear himself talk. Nobody else can get a word in, and his favorite subject is “Kevin Butler.” I’m suprised he hasn’t started speaking in third person. “Kevin Butler was one of the greatest players in Georgia and the Chicago Bears history.” I mean the guy was good, but he doesn’t cause the earth to revolve around the sun.

Former ball players know their game. That’s a fact. The drawback is their egos. People want to hear the call of the game. Period. Give me a fan of the program (e.g., Munson) instead of an ex-jock (e.g., Butler) any day…One need not be an ex-jock to put sugar in the sky or the airwaves…
And No, it wasn’t me that suffered the heart attack in the PRR. I turned 10:00 minute miles and finished with a smile…Hope to see some of you dawg blawggers out there next year…GO VOLS

Chip Carey with Kevin Butler and Loran Smith on the sidelines…
60 yards to beat a topped ranked Clemson…the majesty of that moment only gets Butler the job…plus hes damn interesting…
(and replace Loran with a gurl when he retires)

I’m from Savannah where Belue makes his living. Trust me, he’s not the caliber of broadcaster UGA listeners have grown accustomed to. I disagree with him. UGA broadcast are not stale. Munson and crew set the standard for other college broadcasts. I now live in Columbia and consequently get exposed to everything USC has to offer. They don’t compare. Belue will bring us down to the middle. I’ve not heard Butler, but he’s got to be a better choice.

Please no Butler, No Belue ODawg is right all Butler wants to talk about is butler. No one can get a word in and everything is a joke. It won’t be that way in the booth. I say don’t even let Butler do the 5th qtr show. I am really sick of Kevin’s corner and their is nothing interesting about his opinion whatsoever. I thought he was trying to ride Dooley’s coat tail to the area football group to hear his name one more time.

If they can keep Butler sober long enough, I’d love to hear him in the booth giving color commentary. I agree with others that Buck is best suited in the Loran Smith role.

Macondog,
In case you haven’t followed Eagles updates recently, MJG has been buried deep on the depth chart, where he will inevitably stay until his imminent retirement in 3-4 yrs. Too big, too lazy, and can’t read defenses. Not my assessment, this is the League’s assessment. Go Jackets!

IT IS TIME WE GET MORE PROFESSIONALISM IN THE BOOTH.
ERNIE JOHSON WOULD BE GREAT AS MENTION AND HE HAS A GREAT VOICE AND A SUPER HUMOR TO BLEND WELL WITH THE GEORGIA CROWD.
AS FOR BUCK BELUE’ HE IS A JOKE AND IS NOT WHAT WE NEED IN THE BOOTH WITH HIS AWFUL VOICE. NO, WE DO NOT NEED AN OLD FOOTBALL PLAYER,BUT WE DO NEED SOME CLASS AND SOMEONE WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO BRING IT HOME.

The only two interesting people for broadcasts are Jeff Dantzler and Scott Howard. As for play by play, yuck when compared to Munson. None of the former Dawg players are qualified. I would LOVE to have Bill Hartman or Chip Caray, but I doubt either would take it.

Come on Dawgs. You’ve got to give that job to Loren. He’s earned it. Where’s your allegiance ? The problem though is that someone else will have to do the pregame trailer-trash interviews during which the Wally Butts days are remembered.

Jerry, What the hell are you talking about?Buck makes his living in Savannah? Buck hasn’t lived in Savannah in almost 10 years, unfortunately he makes his living here in Atlanta, Monday-Friday on the local sports talk station.About once a month Buck writes an article that appears in the Savannah paper along with other papers throughout the state, but hey at least you were able to get out of Savannah.

Too bad Larry can’t stay another 20 years but, given the inevitability of his retirement, the selection of his successor is a no-brainer. Anyone who has listened to Scott Howard will agree with me that he is the best man for the job. Although I don’t believe that a former player is necessary to do color, Kevin Butler would make a fine choice. I think Buck would do a good job as the sideline reporter. When it comes to radio broadcasts of UGA games, regardless of the sport, three voices I never want to hear: Loran Smith, Matt Stewart & anyone named Caray (Chip, Skip or otherwise).

You guys are missing a key ingredient here! I am sure the booth will now be politically correct! Especially, now that Damon is the director. I am sure there will be diversity in that booth. Probably, Scott Howard and a man of color who is the color guy.

Chip Caray sucks lamecocks. I hate watching the Braves on TBS for 2 reasons: (1) no chance to wath the game in high definition and (2) the aforementioned Chip Caray. He is no more than a bag of wind who loves the sound of his own voice. His broadcasts consist of nonstop, meaningless chatter. The fact that he is a UGA alum makes no difference. He’s just plain awful!

Let’s get Joe Hamilton in here for a shot. My lord…has anyone ever listened to him on those CSS broadcasts. GTU should be embarrassed, and I’m sure they are. What a poor spoken S.O.B. Makes me want to gouge my eardrums out. I, for one, wouldn’t be able to take Buck doing play-by-play…but I do think he fits in somewhere in those broadcasts, whether it be color or on the sidelines. I also like the fact that he is making no bones about it that he wants the job. What about Jim Donnan, as a color analyst…you know he still loves Georgia, but I guess we’d have to get rid of Adams before he’d come back. And would he?

Jeff Dantzler ?? You got to be kidding !! I may start another broadcast team to give everyone an alternative that will be turning their radios off if they have to be subjected to JD and his endless tales of UGA lore from 25 plus years ago. Let’s finally beat the Gators consistently and make some new memories instead of living in the past!!

If you want to put all homers on the broadcast, go ahead and put Scott and Jeff along with Belue and Matt Stewart. The last time I listened to Scott and Jeff on basketball, I thought I was lietening to an all-american team. The play by play and the color person described that every UGA play was great and fantastic while the other team was so so. The other was Tennessee and they beat UGA twice. If they are not available, call Matt Stewart for another GA sided broadcast with everything good for UGA and everything bad for the opponents. Munson may cry and whine alot, but he does not talk badly about the opponents and while he is a great fan of UGA, the broadcast will be in trouble if you put Scott, Jeff, Bucky and Matty Stewart in charge. You need to get Chip Carey. He is young and good.

Too bad only a few players are listed for the 1980 National Title team, since that is the only national title for UGA. If this was USC, ND or Oklahoma in terms of players coming back in national title teams, there would not be enough room to hold them.
8-4 for the Dawgs in 2007, with an opening loss to the Pokes from OSU.
