Get well, Coach Dooley!

As you’ve probably read, the tumor removed recently from Vince Dooley’s vocal cords turned out to be malignant and he’ll undergo radiation treatments sometime in June. The prognosis is good, his doctors say.

I exchanged e-mails with Coach Dooley last week and he showed his usual good humor in addressing the situation. “I should be OK even if I get a negative lab report,” he said. “Biggest problem right now is no talking. … My wife Barbara always did get the last word. Now she’s getting all the words.”

I’ve made no secret here that I’m a Vince Dooley partisan. Always have been and always will be. I’ve always proud to have him representing the University of Georgia, and I’m looking forward to him continuing to do that.

A speedy recovery, Coach!

I had the pleasure of serving under coach Dooley during the 1988 football season and under Coach Goff in the 1989 football season. I had the pleasure wearing Hairy Dawg, and the cheerleaders and I got to have dinner with Coach Dooley and Barbara at their home. Simply put, they are some of the finest people I have ever been associated with. He is a fighter and will give 100% to defete this. May God bless our beloved coach and his wife thru this time. Coach Dooley, we wish you well. Although I am too young to remember you coaching, I do remember meeting you when I was young at a picture day and you tousling my hair and talking to my dad. You shaking his hand always meant a lot to him. I pray for a speedy recovery. You’re a DGD, Coach!

His name should be on the stadium now. We all know that there will be such an out cry to put it on when he finally passes(hopefully in about 50 years). By then he will have done more for the university and for us dawg fans than we could ever repay. We might as well let him be around to see his name on the stadium.

Coach Dooley is one of the kindest people I have ever met, and he built an incredible legacy, not just in football, but in the athletic department as a whole. Under his watch, UGA athletics became a force in a wide variety of sports. The University is lucky to be associated with people like Coach and Barbara Dooley.

God Bless and Get Well Soon Coach - we’ll be thinking about you and praying for you!

War, I am pulling for you and Coach Dooley to make that reunion. Sometimes we get so caught up in things that really don’t mean a hill of beans to us, as is we are not in school or playing now, and we forget what is real. What is real for us is health, children, grandchildren and the friends that have stood by us, or been in the trenches with us. You and Coach Dooley are on my all-star team. I pray for you both. Psalm 121 for the both of you. God bless.
