Give the Dawgs a home court advantage
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Has Dennis Felton finally turned things around for Georgia basketball?
It’s beginning to look that way, what with the Dogs’ 96-83 upset of No. 16 Gonzaga Saturday at Gwinnett Arena, the biggest win for UGA since the victories over the Jackets and Wildcats in Felton’s first season — and Felton’s biggest win to date with his own players.
With the exception of a couple of brief patches where they got kinda sloppy, the Dogs looked like an NCAA tournament team against the Zags. Of course, there’s a whole lotta basketball ahead for Georgia, including the annual match with the Bumblebees and games against Clemson and Wisconsin. But with a road win over Wake Forest already under their belts, Felton’s Dogs are at the very least likely to be much improved this year and with a few breaks could well wind up being tournament-worthy.
My daughter and I will get our next chance to see them Tuesday night at the Steg against Jacksonville. UGA fans are always saying that they’ll go to basketball games when the Dogs start winning big games.
Chances are, Saturday’s win over the Zags won’t be the last big win for Georgia this season. It’s time for the fan base to start showing up to back them.
BULLDOG BITES: Mike “Big Dawg” Woods, my old Athens High School classmate, was voted this year’s “Super Fan” in the contest sponsored by Lincoln Financial Sports. Mike is the guy in the Bulldog-covered overalls with Uga painted on his bald head who you’ll see whooping it up on the big screen during games and kissing Georgia players on the head after a win. Mike is carrying on a tradition started by his dad, who used to drive the bus for the Bulldogs defense under Erk Russell and who, at the players’ urging, shaved and painted his head after the National Championship win in the Sugar Bowl. … Man, that could be BIG news that Brandon Coutu might be able to handle the placekicking in the Peach-fil-A Bowl. Now, if Neil Callaway would just take that UAB job. …

the game they played today shows that if the team continues to buy into Felton’s game plan they could go a long way. Living where I do it’s a twin hitter since the zags upset the huskies last week. i’ll reall enjoy church tomorrow.

Great win for the program. There is no reason why UGA could not be a consistent top 20 program, starting this year. Expect the Dawgs to crack the top 25 and not look back. Recruiting is going well, and Coach has his players improving.

Keep calm everyone, let’s not forget that the Bees won a bunch a games in Hawaii, and there season turned south. I wouldn’t worry about the NCAA’s until we see, how the dawgs do in the conference. The tournament selectors only pick teams that win half of their conference games.

The quickness and up-tempo game Georgia played with tonight showed me a lot about the future. We outplayed an athletic team like Gonzaga with a demanding score too. Impressive win overall for the Dawgs at the Gwinnett Center.

Bill, what was the intent of this sorry blog? This is Georgia’s biggest B-Ball win in several years and you had to add something about some relative painting their head and then comments about the FB team. Isn’t it possible, on a day that the college nation will be talking about our BASKET BALL TEAM, COAST TO COAST, THAT THE TEAM IS WORTHY OF ONE BLOG ONLY ABOUT THEM? i CUT & PASTED THE HEADLINE THAT ALREADY IN THE SEATTLE TIMES AND THERE’LL BE SO MANY COLUMNS ABOUT GONZAGA LOSING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GA. ( NO, NOT THE FOOTBALL TEAM) YOU WON’T BELIEVE THE GREAT PUBLICITY. BEAT GA. TECH? OK, BRAGGING RIGHTS ACROSS THE NATION? Georgia has a basketball team? This is good to hear. Charlie, there won’t be any students at the Jacksonville game. Finals are over and they have all gone home. Let’s hope that we didn’t have too many football players flunk out after finals and they can get their grades changed to stay in school like at Auburn.

I was at the game yesterday, had a great time, there seemed to be more than 6,812 in attendance, all the fans made lots of noise, and it was a great win for the team and the fans.
I like the Gwinnett Center and I love having games there, but it has the worst car exiting strategy I have ever witnessed. It took us 45 minutes to leave the parking lot and this is with 6,812 fans! Imagine if it had been a sell out with twice the amount of fans. Bathrooms should be bigger as well.

News on Calloway’s replacement: Again, this comes from a friend whom works for Rivals. Apparently, Nall, the offensive line coach at AU, has said he wants to move back to Georgia. He pulled a Jim Mora on Tuesday when asked about the possible vaccancy, and said him and his family have wanted to get back home for quite some time. I’ve only driven through Auburn Alabama, but I can cope with him, there is nothing there! Boring place. Anyway’s if the moneys there, he is going back to Georgia. Good luck dawgs.

Leaving the Arena yesterday was the worst time of my life, did anybody see the two women about to fight? Why did they need 3 cop cars to calm that situation down, stupid pigs. Anyway after having to go thru the pain of watching the team get yanked out of the tournament four years ago when they were a likely 2 seed and ranked # 1 by the RPI, to watching the less talented players bust their a*******es, to now finally seeing the light. I believe it says a lot about Felton and the program, now lets act like Tech fans and say “wait til basketball season” haha, oh yeah we own them in basketball over the last 8 years also……..

The key stat in all of their games so far this year is Turn Overs or the lack of them. They are handling the ball really good this year. Gaines could end up being one the best UGA point guards ever. The offense has so many weapons on the outside and the inside players are getting better every game. Can’t wait until they Felton style defense. They will make the NCAA tournament this year but next year could be the special season. Go Dawgs.

Coach Felton is doing a great job. I think it’s time we really start supporting our BBall team. I left school just before the Harrick scandal and I always enjoyed the games.
I hope the students willl get behind this team. Our guards are very impressive. If Jackson, Singleton and Bliss can step up this year we could make some noise.
Felton does need to emphasize defense a little more from the look of things yesterday. In the past we have been a very good defensive team. Let’s hope we can be this year. We know we can score some points. Go DAWGS!!!

interesting question about callaway: should he coach through the bowl game? when MR took over at ga., fsu lost their “nc” game. a lot of ‘nole have never forgiven Richt because they felt he spent more time recruiting for ga. as opposed to working on a game plan for the ‘noles. should callawaw stay through the bowl game or should he be allowed to break away from ga. so he get can jump into recruiting for HIS NEWTEAM? what’s the best for the Dawgs? ;

Buck,
He should leave right away that way Coach Richt can hire a new OC and OL Coach and get them into his system. That way he will have more time to make a smooth transistion. I think someone who calls themselves The Source said Coach Nall from Auburn wants the job. This is the first year in a very long time that I can remember that Auburn’s OL wasn’t very good to great and they were very good at times but like our guys were inconsistent and I believe they had injury problems just like us.

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I blogged, but I’m still here none the less. Buck and Cuz, I hope you both are recovering well. A lot of people who, saying they are UGA fans, don’t even know that Calloway is the OC! My cube buddies joke about that all the time. He is also the O-Line coach, but has limited play calling duties. I hope he does well at UAB and I pray we get a very agressive OC, God knows we have the talent to show defenses some different looks. I hope Bobo takes this thing and runs with it, but I know CMR will have some reins on him. I am not a statistician, just a crazy dawg fan, so I won’t even think about trying to compete with you guys. I really enjoy reading your posts everyday, so keep up the good work. You guys are EXTREME!!!!! By the way, it’s broadcast in 1080I, I totally don’t know what that means, BUTIWANTIT!! WTF

Huskdawg welcome back. War Eagle, MR has all the money he need but the question is, how wouild the other coaches take if if he’s paid a lot mkore money Big Dawg, I read that same posr from the Source and if it’d true then we may indeed see Nall back home. Timming is kinda of funnt but I’l bet that Bobo will play a larger role in gameplaning than he would’ve if Callaway had stayed. If that turns out to be the case, I’ll be a “Happy Camper”.

Ya know Buck, the fact that a LOT of people did’t know that Calloway was the OC tells me that he didn’t get a whole lot of playin’ time in the media. A bunch of folks on here are calling for an OC when we already have one? As for the injuries on the O-Line, you got me. These bloggers are saying that Neil had something to do with that with his style of blocking, and or weight training, so, I have NO clue. War, I hope you guys kick the shi$ out of Nebraska. My wife is from there, and would maim me if she saw this post, but when I told her nebraska was playing auburn, she had a “oh sh$t” kinda look on her face. Yeah, she knows.

Depressing news on the recruiting wire Dawgs, but not surprising: Eric Berry is a Vol. I’ve always thought it was them but I knew we had a remote shot to the end. The giveaway was his evaluation of his official visit to Athens.
During that visit, he compared the two schools (UT and UGA) and I came away with the clear sense that he was a UT lean. It sounded as if his mind was already made up, if you know what I mean. I am surprised, however, that he didn’t wait ‘til signing day. He seemed like that kinda guy.
Oh well, you can’t lose what you never had, and his position isn’t exactly a weak spot on our team. Lets hold on to the ones we have, I think we will, and get more help where we need it!
GO DAWGS!!!!

MadMerf, I picked up somewhere that Berry said that Ga. didn’t give him enough attention. This was a couple of weeks ago and I thought, we don’t need you so be a Vol and be gone! wE ARE FILLING OUR NEEDS BUT WE COULD USE A COUPLE OF MORE “STYLE POINTS” LIKE c. kING AND i REALLY DON’T LIKE HOW tECH BROKE OUR STRANGLE HOLD ON THE STATE. oF THE TOP 10 RATED PLAYERS SO FAR WE’VE GOTTEN 6. wE SHOULD HAVE AN AVERAGE OF 8 OUT OF 10 AT ALL POSITIONS. CHAPS ME BEHIND WHEN THE REPTILES CHERRY PICK A COUPLE EVERY YR. hUSKdAWG, AU BETTER NOT LET THE CONFERENCE DOWN AGAIN THIS SEASON AND THE DAWGS BETTER BE READY TO STRAP IT ON AND WIN OUR GAME AFTER THE SUGAR BOWL LAST SEASON. VA. TECH IS A VERY GOOD FB TEAM AND IT’S A MUST WIN GAME FOR THE DAWGS TO PROVE THAT OUR LAST TWO WINS WERE FOR REAL!! nICE WAY FOR bOBO TO STEP IN AS PLAY CALLER. wITH BOBO STEPPING IN AS “PC” AND A QB WHOSE MOTTO MUST BE “ATTACK, ATTACK AND HIT’UM AGAIN”, I EXPECT TO SEE A VERY AGRESSIVE DAWG OFFENSE AND I LOVE IT!!!!

Buck, you’re right on about Berry. He complained about how he was treated on his visit. How the fans in K-ville were louder, then admitted it could’ve been that the recruits were seated much higher in Sanford stadium than Neyland. He kept saying “it was ok, I guess” but you knew as well as I did where his allegiances were all along.
And then he slipped in the ultimate butt-kisser. He was disappointed that the recruits in Athens were forced to walk around the Dawg Walk, while prospects were allowed to participate in the Vol Walk, something I totally disagree with! Such traditions are sacred in most places, while others practice desperate measures to gain the edge.
People are getting more creative in the recruiting wars, and this Chavis kid (latest visitor to UGA) says he admires CMR and CRG because they never talk negatively about their competition, which is a rarity in this cut-throat business.
The Berry saga reminds me of the biggest “what can you do for me” prospect of all time: Ernie Sims. Both Sims’ parents were atletes at FSU, just as Berry’s were at UT. While Sims jerked around 5 schools (AU, UGA, and the 3 Fla. schools) up until signing day, everyone who follows recruiting knew where he was going all along. It would have been the “Shock of the Century” if Sims had gone anywhere other than FSU.
The only surprise in Berry’s case, as I said above, was that he pulled the trigger so early. You can’t blame him for his decision, he’ll probably get more playing time in K-ville early on.

Great win for the HoopDawgs. I called and gave my brother in Washington State a hard time about it.
I don’t care about Berry but where’s Clifton Geathers heading. Too bad he’s not leaning toward us anymore. What happened there? How did Gardner let that big guy slipped away? Unless, he’s still having academic issues. I wish him the best anyway though.
And Ben Harden is looking elsewhere too.. dog gone it! We need to lock up some more big linemen on both sides of the ball.

As a Tech alumni, I have to give credit where it’s due. GA basketball looked very strong against Gonzaga. While Tech’s recruiting class is one of the best in the nation, UGA will probably beat Tech. UGA is a big physical team and will most likely force many turnovers.
UGA should take advantage of this opportunity before Tech’s starting five, and Mercer, enter the draft.
By I-DOG
December 18, 2006 01:37 PM | Link to this
Great win by the hoop dawgs. We should be able to make the tourney this year and I suspect win a game or two. Beating Tech this week would be incredible!
Eric Berry to TN: Hey, we can’t get them all. This won’t really hurt us for 2-3 years as our secondary is probably the deepest and most talented part of the team for the next 2-3 years.
Two months ago if I tell you we split on Berry and King, most of us would be pretty happy with that.
Calloway: Congrats on the head coaching position. Sounds like we won’t really be losing any of the OL recruits because of this (Gaithers and Harden are different stories). If we can name a new one prior to signing day, maybe we can land Chris Little.
Be careful what you wish for Bill King. I always thought that Calloway was a good developer of lineman. That being said, we should be able to attract a top notch coach with the situation they will be in…
Tons of young talent to mold and a little less pressure their first year to be a “great” line given the situation. If I knew anything about coaching an offensive line, I’d take it in a second.

As I posted earlier, the spot light will shine directly on the head of whoever our “OL” coach turns out to be. Someone will have a chance to really make a name for himself or he’ll be talked about as the guy who couldn’t pull all of the talent together. It’ll be a “High Wire Performance” for our new “OL” coach. There a are a lot of young coaches who would love that challenge.

Ian Sith get 6 game suspension for second alcohol offense, Trey Blackmon at Auburn get 6 games first offense and very doubtful if he will ever play another down at Auburn for the second offense. Why difference in discipline between CTT and CMR? When CTT dismissed from the team, a 5 star true freshman starter for firing a gun into the air at a party in 2001, I knew CTT would be strict and live up to his mark. I really think CMR has stirred some problems with his low-tolerance discipline. It will come back to haunt you if you are careful, just ask Jim Donnan, Harrick`s, Larry Coker and Barry Switzer.I am not saying this will occur at UGA, but its a powerful tool when you have a unsuspected bad season. In 2003, when Jetgate was stirred because of a unsuspected bad season, I feel sure CTT will have been long gone if his discipline and character was not in line. Got my tickets today for Va Tech game, looking forward to the game.
