Getting ready to go Cattin’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five reasons to be optimistic going into Saturday’s game with Kentucky in Lexington:
Kentucky is last in the SEC and 115th in the nation in passing defense (yielding an average 269.75 yards per game) and has given up a SEC-worst 18 touchdown passes. And Georgia’s much-maligned (deservedly so) receiving corps is way overdue for a big game catching the ball.
Martrez Milner is finally out of the starting lineup (though Coach Richt reportedly says Milner still will get about half the playing time — hopefully only the plays when we’re running the ball or throwing to someone other than the tight end and can benefit from Milner’s blocking talents).
The Wildcats’ overall defense ranks No. 118 out of 119 in the nation in yards allowed, surrendering 455.63 yards per game, and they rank 102nd in scoring defense (30.75 points per game).
Kentucky’s No. 1 tailback, Rafael Little, is out with a knee injury and their second-leading rusher, Tony Dixon, is questionable with an injured hamstring. (Of course, their third tailback, Alfonso Smith, rushed for 92 yards against Mississippi State, which is 12 yards more than Kregg Lumpkin got against the Maroons.)
It’s Kentucky! And we’re not playing basketball!
Five reasons to be wary going into the game with Kentucky:
Georgia teams traditionally come out flat for a game against a lesser opponent and also have been known to be down immediately after a big game, even if their effort in the big game fell short. And we don’t appear to have a senior team leader or a fire-breathing motivator on our coaching staff.
The big change in our ineffective offensive line this week is replacing the gimpy Chester Adams with the underperforming Michael Turner, who a couple of times last week waved rushers on past him like a Wal-Mart greeter, resulting in two of the Gators’ four sacks. Of course, thanks to our poor recruiting on the OL, there’s not really any choice but to start Turner. Said Richt about protecting the QB last week: “At times we got physically beat. … As far as doing anything about it, there’s not enough depth to do anything about it.”
If defensive coordinator Willie Martinez falls back on that lame soft zone of his, Kentucky’s passing game could have a big day. Second-year QB Andre Woodson is ranked No. 25 nationally in passing efficiency, and the Cats’ passing attack is ranked 22nd.
Nobody in the SEC fears the Dawgs this year. Even the league’s chump teams smell blood when Georgia comes up on their schedule. Mississippi State believed it could beat Georgia and damn near did. And Kentucky beat MSU by the same 3-point margin as the Dawgs.
… OK, I couldn’t come up with a fifth one. It is Kentucky, after all. And we’re not playing basketball!
POOCH KICKS: My friend Herb, a UK stalwart, predicts, “Bud, you’ll take us by at least two touchdowns. Your guys played better in the second half against the Gators. Take away all the mistakes and you’ve got a different ballgame.” Of course, Herb would make Vince Dooley look like an optimist. He always downplays Kentucky’s roundball prospects, too. … A familiar sight on the jumbo screen at Sanford Stadium and in telecasts of Georgia games is the bald head painted with a Georgia Bulldog belonging to Mike “Big Dawg” Woods, one of my classmates (Class of ’70) at Athens High School. I’m told that Mike is one of the finalists in Aaron’s Super Fan Contest. You can vote for him starting Thursday, Nov. 2, at SouthernSportsAwards.com. … AOL Sports NCAA Fanhouse blogger Ted Kian presents the case against OL coach Neil Callaway and his recruiting at http://georgia-football.aolsportsblog.com. … ESPN.com’s Ivan Maisel and Mark Schlabach (remember him?) did their bowl forecast this week, and both see Georgia in the Peach-fil-A against Boston College. If we don’t make it to Atlanta, it’s likely to be the Independence, Music City or Liberty. And while we’re talking bowls, which one wins the worst-name award? It’s between the Meineke Car Care Bowl and the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia — neither of which we’re in the running for, thank goodness.

Pay them back for stealing Tubby (and leaving UGA with Jirsa and Harrick). Tick them off by reminding them that Pitino is now at despised Louisville. Pitino/Petrino own Big Blue.
Realistically, this game should show if the wheels are loose at UGA or if things are coming together.

I would like us to play a bowl game in Atlanta if we can, so it will not be a hardship for travel. At least the Peach -fil a bowl is somewhat respectable.
Too bad it won’t be the SEC Champ game in the dome Dec 2 >: Maybe next year….

Lord knows we’re due for an “A” game out of this team, but as I said aT the Mississippi State game, Georgia this year has the ability to make ANY team look competitive.
That ends Saturday. GO DAWGS!!!

Dawgs, i feel for u! As a proud (and I mean proud Vol) I gained a lot of character (un-needed) watching that season! It only took ONE thing to make a big difference - CHANGE-CHANGE-CHANGE! However you get it done, do IT!! Cutcliff was our answer - same players less Randy Sanders-KY QB coach! Figure it out!! Good luck Sat and pray for us against LSU! I lived 16 yrs in Covington, now back in beloved ROCKY TOP!

I agree with orangeman, same at Auburn, CTT hired Al Borgas as OC and guess what, Auburn has won 21 out 23 SEC games, 1 SEC title and with the his 30-4 record is behind only Southern Cal and Texas as best in the country last three years. Yes,CMR needs to pay attention.CTT has won more SEC games than any coach in the conference since 2001.

I am as big a Dawg fan and am as disappointed in our performances this year as any. I just have a little bit of a problem with your comments about Milner above. He’s a kid. He’s had a rough season so far. He knows that. Everyone knows that. At the end of the day, he’s still a college kid (not a professional athlete) and doesn’t deserve to be talked about that way. How do you think he’s going to feel when he reads comments like that? How do you think his parents and teammates will feel? I’m guessing they’ll be pretty upset. What recruit is going to want to come to UGA knowing if they have a few bad games the local media is going to rip them apart and the fans are going to boo him? On another note, every team has a bad year or two every now and then (Ohio St., Florida, Auburn and Tennessee have all had seasons with 5 or more losses recently—even the mighty Trojans look like they’ll lose a few more games this year) I don’t think there’s reason to panic yet. We’ve had several great recruiting classes and are working on another. Our future looks good.

Personally, I don’t think we need an OC. I was frustrated at our DC for not mixing/disguising his schemes, but I think he improved against the gators. I feel like the intensity/enthuse is back. It’s time for a break out game, now!
Inman an NFL caliber? I don’t see it yet. He has it, but he has not put it together on the field consistently. He has been in my dog house all season b/c of his feet are too dadgum slow. My grandma can do a hula dance around him. Of course, he’s not the only one is struggling on the line. I hope he proves me wrong these next 3 games.
Is the KY game on pay per view? Anyone know? I may have to drive up north if it’s not on ppv. It might be a shootout or a blowout.. of course, dawgs win.

The comparisons to hiring Borges and Cutliff really dont fit. CTT an CPF are not offensive coaches, in fact they both tell you they are not Xs and Os guys, so obviously they need good coordinators, they can’t do that job, they never have and dont know how. They also had others with success, and others with failure. Hiring a new and better OC for them was just a matter of timing, for CMR it would represent an entirely new way of runing his program. I do beleive he has about as good conference record over the past several years as anyone, including those guys going through several coordinators during that time. I’m not saying some new blood or changes won’t happen, or needed, but its pretty simplistic to say, “see here, all you have to do is hire any new OC like those guys because everyone’s situations is exactly the same”.
As I recall , both AU and TN down years were a total surprise, with everyone picking them pretty high, so maybe there was some cancer, or real problems, CERTAINLY secret plane meetings and scapegoats. Didn’t Sanders do about as well in 2004 as Cutcliff is going to do this year? Apple and Oranges. If we had been picked #1 national preseason or even #1 SEC east, that might be a better comparison. UGA is going to finish about where everyone said because of real issues at depth and experience.

Guys, not only do we worry about the rest of this year, next year will be tough also. We won’t have a good OL line with NO depth. DL will probally not be as strong. You can talk about our backs all day long, but who can block.Qb position will be improved, as will DB and possilbly LB. Who will kick and punt. of course coach WM will be back along with line coach. hopefully 5 or 6 true freshman can step forward, maybe a couple of JUCO lineman and some of the 12-14 redshirt freshman will step in. we could start 6-7 redshirt freshman next year and 2-3 true freshman. we will be young. the follwing year, LOOK OUT, LIGHTS OUT…GO DAWGS !

Some good quotes from David Ching On Athens.
Callaway:“We all make mistakes. No game’s perfect. If you compete, if you’ve ever competed, you’re gonna get whipped. So we’re gonna learn from it and keep on going.
Matt Stafford: “Whatever the plan is for the week, I’m just gonna try to execute it. I don’t have any kind of bearing now, as far as what I say. I’m too young to have any kind of influence. I’m just trying to go out there and try and help out and win.

godawg, I guess he was talking about his influence in puttign the game plan togetehr with the coaches, but along those lines, I have always wondered what kind of leverage a first year guy has to walk up to a senior lineman and grab his collar. I can only imagine that he simply tells a receiver who just droped his 3rd pass, what the next play is and heads to the line. Next year I bet he punches them in the shoulder a bit more.

I heard up here that Compton (RSFR QB) who may replace Mainge this week was yelling at his receivers, telling them how he needed them to run their routes. I would hope Stafford is far enough along to do the same and is taking more and more leadership of the offense. Still, hard to do when you’re a baby-faced true freshman.
I ‘ll bet you’re right about next year though since he’ll have another spring and fall under his belt. I look for him to be much improved. There are some other great quotes from him in that interview as well. I liked what he said about him being ready to take the ball down for a quick score at the end before Quentin’s facemask penalty. I also like how he didn’t lay any blame for the penalty but ascribed to one of those things that happen when you’re playing hard.

At the University of Ghetto Academics (UGA), the only way you can have a good football team is to keep criminals and thugs playing ball. Try recruiting inmates about to be released from prison and you might have a good football team again.

I’d love to see Georgia go after fired Michigan State coach John L Smith as the next offensive coordinator. Whatever problems he may have had as a head coach, offensive production wasn’t one of them. He may get a second chance as a head coach somewhere after his success at Louisville, though.

Man do I feel better. I was worried about Rafael Little. He looked good last year in Athens although that is all they had. Woodson is a pretty solid QB. We can’t let him get going on Saturday. We need to apply some pressure early and often. I have seen some publications picking Kentucky. I feel better playing on the road right now. We will probably respond better. I don’t see it happening. I guarantee the Dawgs are still hungry and will fight to the end. Tony Taylor will have the D ready for Saturday. I just hope that none of our footballs get thrown off the upper deck. If you were up in Lexington 2 years ago you know what I’m talking about. Kentucky should be fired up but they don’t have the guns to do it. We need to play a mini season. We are currently 0-0. 3-0 looks pretty good. There is still some magic left in Athens.

godawg, how dare he not blame somebody, stuff doesnt just happen, somebody has to be blamed for every call, evry play, every bounce of the ball, if not outright FIRED.
What I enjoyed was the detailed conversation, about the Fl guy “bailing”. I have said many times in here, we don’t know a tenth of what is actually going on, even though things look so damn obvious.
Brooks in a lot of ways this does seem like the start of a 3 games mini season. if fact it feels like we had about 3 different seasons in one. Lets concentrate on this last one and write off that middle one, and be thankful the first one was as good as it was.

Bibble, John L needs a year of R & R. He has just been whipped up in Lansing. That team at times has shown brilliance and tremendous offensive potential only to implode the second half of the last two now three seasons. I think in Oct/Nov the past two years MSU has gone something like 1-10. A year off will do him some good plus MSU will be paying him 1.5 per for the two years. It is unfortunate, the guy really is a character and he just can’t contain his frustration in the press conferences. Sound bites abound.

I’m up here in KY. They are believing they are going to win. One more thing, they don’t consider beating UGA a “goal post worthy” win !!!
They haven’t beaten UT or Fla since the 80’s and last beat us 1n 1996. I hope some players and coaches read this and get really ticked off and take out some frustration.
Michael Henig threw for 384 yards against this D last week. This is the opportunity to run the 4 wides and chuck it all over the field. WM should play press coverage and pressure, pressure, pressure all day long. They won’t score if we do that.
Remember, their coach is on the hot seat big time. He DESPERATELY needs 6 wins and a bowl to keep his job. They will be geeked up and we better be ready.

Listen, I don’t think WM has been great but the offense and the special teams have put them in a lot of bad situations. This is a good defense when someone has to go 70/80 yards, they struggle on a short field and when they are out there all day. Problem is magnified with injuries and depth. Make no mistake losing Flowers hurt more in the secondary than as a returner. Losing JT on the punt team hurt also. I agree that next year could be rough as well. This is just a brutally young team.

Hopefully the dawgs will win out and finish 9-3…I know people will think that I am crazy. But Georgia has a chance to win out…If they cut down on the turnovers…..Play D like they did against Florida……….I have to agree with AltamahaDawg, With Vandy being the Exception, this year is going the way I thought it would………I know I would have taken 9-3 or 8-4 at the beginning of the season based on our the make-up of the team and the schedule…………..The Dawgs have a chance to turn things around and it starts this weekend……
As far as the coaching staff goes: Mark Richt will not hire an OC. (that is his role, along with being the head coach)…. New Position coaches may be hired If Richt lets some people go….I don’t think he will………I have been bashing Willie all season about not mixing things up defensively, but I have to admit he did a great job planning for the Florida game. I hope he keeps it up for the remaining games. Let’s not forget guys this is the same coaching staff that won an SEC title last year.

2N4YEARS let me help you out some with these little “sheethead” Tech Fans. They like to talk about UGA having “thugs” but at least UGA doesn’t have a little terrorist training camp on campus. I know jacketnation, Ramble On! and the rest of the Tech lovers want you to forget this part:
Prosecutors have said the Georgia men, Ehsanul Islam Sadequee and Syed Haris Ahmed, traveled to Washington to shoot “casing videos” of the Capitol and other potential targets.
Sadequee, 19, a U.S. citizen who grew up near Atlanta, is accused of lying to federal authorities during an FBI terrorism investigation. Ahmed, 21, a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is charged with providing material support and resources for terrorism.
A U.S. counterterrorism official said the 17 suspects in Canada were an example of a type of group that authorities had been concerned about for some time: self-organized cells of homegrown extremists.
Now isn’t that something to brag about! You stupid Tech lovers forget about all the crappy bowls you’ve played in, the fact that you haven’t beat UGA in 6 YEARS, the fact that UGA whipped your freakin A* 51-7 and that you are supporting terrorism by letting in all the “little Sheetheads” in on a student visa so GT can teach them the best engineering methods to blow our country to smithereens!! No this is not last year, this is 2006. We have no chance for the SECC. The Jackets have a shot at the ACCC. I still think we beat the bugs, you call us Mutts, on Thanksgiving weekend. Hey I could be wrong and will fully admit it if it happens. I will even say that the winner is the better team. Right now I think it is the Dawgs, I will show up after the game and crow or eat it.
First thing first, beat Kentucky. I don’t see it as that hard. But we have a tradition of not getting up for the small game. Hence our performance in the Vandy and Florida game. I disagreed with Bill and thought except for the turnovers, God got to get rid of them, Florida was the best game we played all year. If we play like that the last three games, we beat KY, Tech and it is a crap shoot with Auburn.
Give up on the idea of CMR getting an OC. He is the OC, it will not change. CWM is part of a two out of three wins, he is back. His defence gets blown out all three games, pack your bags. Callaway, as much as I would like to see a new Line Coach, CMR loyalty factor rules here. Too bad college coaches do not follow the bushido code of the sammuri and slit their bellies in seppuku, figuratively not litteraly.
Whether we win all three or lose all three, I am a Dawg and will wear my colors with pride. As a former team bus driver, I get to drive the bandwagon and I can tell you, there is a lot more room on it this year. Everybody loves you when you win. Real fans are with you when times get tough. As I love to quote, in the words of the late, great, crazy s.o.b., Hunter S. Thompson. “When the times get tough, the tough get weird.”
Now, GO DAWGS!!

cuz, thanks for the thoughts. I’ll be pulling for the Dawgs and me boy Matthew but things have changed a little bit this week. got a biopsy back that’s not exactly a Go Dawg! shoult. Kinda in a wait and see mode. some action will be taken but just how much remains to be seen. BTW, notice the “Bugs” are catching some big fish. Seems to me we’re lagging at the moment and I hope that changes. “my Boy” will throw 3 td passes that will be caught. That’ll give us 21 for starters…..later

We lost to FL. Who cares who we lose to or beat after that? And for all of you idiots who will chant that “fair weather” crap, you just dont get it. I am one of the few UGA fans who understands that rivalry and what it means. This does not mean I am pulling for someone else. It means I care so much that it crushes me to go 2 for 17 against our biggest rival (not oldest or closest).

To be a rivalry, we would need to beat them more than twice in ten years. Tech will always be a rival no matter the records due to the in-state connection.
Buck, I hope everything turns out all right. I also hope those three touchdowns of Staffords do not include any run back interceptions for touchdowns by the Kentucky defence.

Gen Neyland, yes, I’ve heard of Cookeville. I’m closer to Knoxville in Philadelphia. The mountains and lakes are beautiful (I live on a 130 acre horse farm in a c. 1848 brick federal style farmhouse) but after growing up in Athens, GA and living there off and on most of my life it’s hard being surrounded by all this orange. These hillbillies are pretty damn crazy.

Buck, maybe Staffored will have a career game tomorrow and you will really get moving . Best to you and hope all is well soon. Dawgs to need some offensive control and keep the defense off the field . UGA is third in rushing defense in the SEC, so that little punch would help the Dawgs.. Take care and remember ‘big” game is next week. It will be a great game as usual.

That was worst defense on both sides of the ball I have ever seen a Top 10 team have…They are going nowhere, defense wins championships and ball control.5 or 6 SEC teams could play with both teams and probably win most of them.Off to the Plains today, have a nice weekend everybody

War Eagle- Not to sound demented, but I think Louisville hasn’t played a secondary with the talent to match their passing game. WVA has speed but EVERYONE has speed in the SEC. So I’m gonna agree with your previous posts that say the top SEC teams handle those two…

War Eagle, it would be fun to see somebody in the SEC play WV or Louisville that’s for sure. I would think it will probably happen in a BCS bowl. Although I hated the outcome of the Sugar Bowl last year, it was a damn good game and came down to that fake punt with a little over a minute to go. Excellent match up.

Kalamazoo, I’m with you. T’was an exciting game.(not the outcome)IMO, the biggest thing that would hurt WVA. or LOUISVILLE playing in the SEC would be depth but with the exciting brand of ball they play and today’s players looking for that. I think they would overcome that problem in a hurry! I’ve kinda of followed Rutgers from afar because I like their coach. Big East better watch out, I know they’re undefeated but they may not be quite ready yet. They are “The State University of New Jersey” and when that idea gets threw some more recruits brains, they could be a powerhouse. I’d love to see the Dawgs, on a home and home basis, open with them. Their coach is doing what Howard Schlenberger did with Miami when he declared every thing so. of the I-4 corridor as being part of the state of MIAMI. Be a great series.

Cuz, that would such a tough call about Callaway this year. It’s not like he took a loaded line and underacheived. And he has had some pretty decent lines in the past. NOW if he is part of the reason we continue to be thin and dont recruit well..who knows. I don’t think anyone would mistake me for a fire the position coach as a reaction fan. I don’t think its that simple. I’m not saying we could not do better keeping that line headed in a consistant right direction, and maybe some change there would be ok, but I do know, he had about nuthing to work with, depth wise, this year. I think its a fine line for a HC, knowing when to let general coaching attrition just work itself out, or reassign responsibilities, and when to plain old fire somebody.
I do beleive that Callaway will be involved in some type of a shakeup this offseason, perhaps in his role as current OC. I think there is more to the complexities of who calls the play, who is responsible for working the plays out, and who runs the day to day offensive side of the program , than we know. I think some folks assume Richt is all of that, but of cource he can’t be. I know he “calls” the plays on game day, But I think everyone makes way too big of a deal about that. Anyone can cycle through a groupings of prepared plays , depending on a set of situations. Some folks let thier OC call the plays as well. I doubt its any its not that big of a deal. Richt obvious chooses to do that because its how he has alwasys felt connected. No big deal to give somebody a head set, obvious BobO woudl do it just like he would, so its not really a matter of “philisophical differences”. The real issue is preparing the plays, setting up game plans, the thats the OC real job, which is Callaway.

The term “GAME DAY COACH” does have a meaning. When to call a set of plays and when to adjust according to the way the games going IS THE JOB OF THE “OC”. Just look around the SEC. Only two teams have the HC as the OC. the DAWGS and SC. Let’s take the last couple of yrs. Tn, AU, ARK, Fl are 4 right off the top of my head that have OC that call plays during the game. Oh, have to add “Bugs” even though they’re ACC. Calling play during the game is one of, if not the most important function of an “OC”. A lot of teams will scrpit the 1st 10-15 plays in order to check out what the “D” is doing, then they adjust play calling. All the planning in the world won’t help if the “OC” can’t make in game adjustments.

OK JacketNation, you are referring to “mobile, and athletic QB play” I would assume that means Reggie Ball will not play against UGA? Which part of mobile or athletic does he have. Is it the part where he gets flushed from the pocket and rolls right, throwing the ball 20 rows into the stands on 4th down. Or is it the play where he runs out of bounds, gets smacked by a LB, then tries to beat the hell out of a 140 lb. student trainer? I keep forgetting which it is he’s better at? Seeing as how those are the two plays that define Reggie Ball’s career. Face it Bugs, Ball can’t beat UGA, he gets so out of control for this game it’s not funny any more!

DAWGS will have tough time on o-line next year. we will be playing nearly all redshirt freshmen and true freshmen. not a good thing for a young qb. i dont know why we have not recruited o-lineman the way we should over the past few years. JUCO’S have a hard time getting in at UGA. also believe coach Eason needs to go. maybe UGA goes back to the days of only winning seven to eight games a year.

Unbelievable. Why does Richt insist on sticking with Stafford? When is everyone going to wake up and realize the kid is in WAY over his head. 3 more interceptions cost us the game. Richt has lost his mind. He gave up on the season after the Vandy game. He was a great assistant coach but he is incapable of motivating a team. How many times have we lost to UK and Vandy in the same season?

Okay, now I am really angry. No excuse for losing to Kentucky. I cannot believe we are that bad!!! There better be some coaching changes after this year. Our defense played very well last week, this week, they can’t stop Kentucky?! Bye, bye Martinez!!! You have to go!!
I love UGA and will continue to support the team, but this is really ridiculous. I truly don’t believe we will win again this year. I am worried about what type of class we will sign this year.
One more rant: why did Richt let Bailey kick the extra point? It was obvious that the kid has lost his mind and therefore, lost his leg. Why didn’t he let Ely Kelso kick the extra point?!

What a season for you Dawg fans!!
I vaguely remember having a conversation with one of you “believers” earlier in the season after you were lucky to beat Ole Miss telling him how you guys aren’t very good. Where are all those UGA fans with their six-pack predictions? I remember everyone counting Vandy and Kentucky as sure wins. You believed you would have trouble against Florida and Auburn(but would win one of those) but would beat Tech for sure. Well, you guys have been wrong about everything so far. Auburn, who isn’t that great anyway, will roll over. You will make it look good against Tech in the first quarter like Miami did, but you will lose. Face it, 6-6 is the best you will do this year. Also, that does not guarantee a bowl this year. There may be as many as 6 or 7 6-6 teams from many of BCS conferences. A lot of analyst believe 7 wins is the new standard for a decent bowl. I don’t think many bowls would like UGA as a choice.
It may turn out to be lucky for you guys not to go to a bowl. You would then have a 6-7 season, unless they let you play Colorado or Ole Miss again so you can win by a point! Ha Ha Ha Ha. UGA is to the SEC as Duke is to the ACC. Easy win…..
