A Bulldog fan wonders …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
ON OFFENSE: As Georgia prepares for the late late show in Oxford Saturday, I’m wondering whether Coach Richt will follow his usual game plan of splitting the offense just about evenly between run and pass, or if he’ll come to the same conclusion as Wake Forest last week: that the Rebels’ defensive front is particularly vulnerable to the run. The Demon Deacons ran the ball 53 times against Ole Miss, throwing only five passes. End result: a big win on the road for Wake Forest. Considering the Dawgs’ running game could use some work, this might be the perfect opportunity to let a back (preferably Kregg Lumpkin) get 20 to 30 carries in a game and try and establish a rhythm.
A side benefit would be getting the late-starting game over faster. Ole Miss and Wake’s game lasted just 2 hours and 35 minutes, the fastest in Division 1-A this year. Worst case scenario would be going into overtime after midnight.
ON DEFENSE: I’ve expressed skepticism in the past about the job Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez is doing, and Georgia’s first half against Colorado raised those doubts again. What is it with the Dawgs’ D in the first half of games? Are they not mentally ready or motivated? Is their some flaw in their game preparation? Are Martinez’s game plans lacking? Colorado quite obviously had watched film of Georgia (probably the Sugar Bowl), but our players looked as if they didn’t have the slightest clue what the Buffs were gonna do. Usually, the Dawgs adjust well at halftime, but you’ve got to wonder why it takes that long. Whatever the problem is, it needs to be rectified.
NO HARD FEELINGS: The feedback I’ve heard and read from Colorado fans about their experience in Athens last weekend was overwhelmingly positive across the board. They praised everything about gameday at Georgia, including the warmth, generosity and hospitality of the UGA fans (and, not surprisingly, how pretty the women were). One Buffalo fan posting on the NetBuffs site said that after the game Georgia fans sought out CU fans to congratulate them on how their team had played. (I saw this happening and, in fact, did it myself.) You can read the CU fan’s post at http://www.netbuffs.com/message_board/football/2006/September/26/399574 .php. Intense rivalries like we have with the Vols, Gators and Jackets are great, but, frankly, I’d rather have the sort of friendly atmosphere we had at the Colorado game any time. (Unfortunately, the obnoxiousness of our rivals’ fans plays a big part in why that won’t happen.)
TAILGATING UPDATE: Graham Coffey is a senior at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC, who hopes to go to UGA next year (following in the footsteps of his sister and both his parents). As part of a school project on sports and the Internet, Graham has volunteered to file reports to the Blawg on various aspects of the gameday experience this season. After hearing that the South Campus alcohol-free Family Friendly Zone had been “condensed” for lack of use, I suggested Graham check out the more heavily used North Campus family zone. He did last Saturday, and reports that two hours before kickoff (prime tailgating time), there were six tailgate groups totaling 47 people in the zone. Those 47 people were being guarded by seven police officers. Says Graham: “Most of the people there had small children and were glad to have a place to provide them with some recreation. In the zone was a giant blowup slide and a popcorn vendor. People that were inside the zone all said that they liked the idea. However, every person interviewed outside the zone thought it was a waste of valuable tailgating space.” Maybe the Family Friendly Zone idea will catch on, but so far it seems to be off to a slow start.
ONE MORE THOUGHT: A Blawg poster noted earlier this week what a classy, confident kid Joe Cox appeared to be in post-game interviews. Listening to him on the locker room show Saturday, my son and I had the same thought: He’s unusually articulate for a college football player. Joe T. is also a very intelligent kid but tends to talk in coachspeak, which isn’t surprising considering he practically grew up at Butts-Mehre. Matthew Stafford, what I’ve heard of him, sounds pretty much like your typical 18-year-old — not particularly articulate. Of course, speaking isn’t what they’re on the team to do, but you want your quarterback to be smart, and Cox shows every sign of being a thoughtful young man. He makes a good impression.

I know there is alot of benefit to grounding the ball out against Ole Miss.
But truthfully, I think it’s our passing game that I think needs the most work. All our RB’s have been in lots of big games. None of our QB’s have really. I want to get those young QB’s alot of reps throwing the ball so that when we are playing tough games in a month and possibly having to throw just to keep up, it would definitely behoove us to have those QB’s feeling comforable with their throws.
Just my 2 cents.

Bill, terrific column as usual. I am very less than thrilled that we are playing so late at night, even if it does mean we get national t.v. exposure. Question - What is going on with Blake Barnes? I read the AJC on-line daily, and I have seen nothing mentioned about him in the last several weeks. I kind of feel bad for the young man, as he was just as highly touted as Cox when he was recruited. I would love to see him stay a Dawg, but if he gets the opportunity, it would probably be best if he could transfer to a school were he would have a good shot at being a starter.

Barnes has disappeared off the radar. He would be well served by transfering, I think. He deserves to be a starter somewhere. That still leaves us with a situation between Cox and Stafford; similar to Green/Shockley. They both have GREAT potential, and Ritch is not a coach who wastes talent, like we did in the 90s. So, they both will suceed to a good extent. I guess it’s a good problem to have. I agree with the above two, that it’s those two we need to work on this week, not the running game. If there’s still questions after Ol Mrs., then the 53 play running thing sounds good to try against the Vols. Balance would be 20-25 every week for Lump.

Confidence for our running game will be nice going into the UT game, since they have a stout D. At the same time, our QB’s need to get more reps, and hopefully playing under te lights again will prepare them for next week. The game plan should revolve around the run though, and let the young guns throw to keeo the D off balance. Let’s see what Martinez brings for the first few series.

Dawgs need to establish the run early and please CMR take advantage of the 2 great fullbacks we have. Lump will have a big game if CMR will lead the fullbacks lead more. We need to keep the FB screen in the playbook too!! I believe either QB will gain confidence if we come out and bust Ole Miss in the mouth. The linemen need to get back to the basics this weekend and knock some DLs on their butts. Our line looked soft the last 2 weeks and I agree with a couple of the other posters…both Guards look out of shape. I thought the LBs were the problem last week on D. Don’t understand why they couldn’t cover the TE and they missed way too many tackles. Go Dawgs.

Unfortunately, I don’t think its as easy as transferring unless he goes to a 1AA school. If he transferred to Mississippi State, it would only leave him with one year of eligibility.
Richt and Bobo screwed him by announcing the pecking order 1 day before he could enroll in another school. My opinion of Richt’s integrity changed after that decision.
I think the entire coaching staff had already decided Stafford was going to get some serious play time, but they were afraid Cox would transfer so they named him number 2.
Barnes had a very good fall scrimmage game and I heard an audio of Richt saying “he could not find anything Barnes did wrong”. Barnes Knows the offense and is every bit as good as Cox if not better.
My question is, why spend a year trying to develop Stafford when you already had 2 very capable back ups behind JTIII?

I strongly agreed with our DC. He needs to get after Ainge next week. We can’t let that dude stand back there and pick his spots. Same w/Leak.
We always seem to have difficult time defending running QBs. We’ll see how we’re going to adjust to Shaeffer.
Yes.. Kregg should touch the ball at least 20 times.

Everybody wins on Thursday Night Football!!
Auburn escapes Columbia in a last second nail-biter, with Carolina throwing to the end zone several times at the end of a 7 point loss. SC’s freshman TE drops the game tying score on the final series.
The game was remarkably close considering WR Rice was effectively shut down the entire night. He is by far the most overrated player in the league to this point.
This game proved that anything can happen on any given week in the SEC. If you don’t bring your ‘A’ game every time you hit the field, you will be watching the SECCG on T.V. come December.
Still, SC beat the point spread, and there is your ‘moral victory’ for the lamers……..EVERYBODY WINS!!!!!!!!!

I, too, feel bad for Barnes. He was Mississippi’s Mr. Football in a banner year in the state. Now he’s in his third year in Athens, and he’s sitting on the bench watching 2 freshman backups hog up the PT while JT3 recovers!
I would love to see him get some plays in Oxford (although that is highly unlikely) in front of familiar faces! I don’t care if its meaningful or mop-up duty, one gets the feeling his time is running out, if it hasn’t already.
Dawgs 38-3, Ed O. still has a ways to go!!!!

I think we bring Schaeffer to the promised land. Hi this is Moses, his staff is called his Johnson. Between the two, The red, or is it blue, sea gets parted in Oxford. Our offense does not matter. If the other team does not score, we win.

I agree with ya’ll about Barnes. This game should have a lot of running attack, why not let him come in and run several series’ for us? If things were truly as close (competition wise) in spring and late summer, he should be fine to lead some drives for us against Ole Missy. Might even change the crowd noise over for us a little bit. Maybe I’m too sentimental, but it would be a perfect way for CMR to show some appreciation for the effort. Who knows, he may even surprise some folks.

The talk about who’s got the bigger Johnson, Auburn with Greg Johnson or UGA with Charles Johnson is probably all for naught. It has been called to my attention that Auburn’s Greg Johnson has had a problem with offside penalties. Unabated to the QB, or as they say in Auburn: Premature tackle-ation. So it really boils down to this: Its not the size of the Johnson, but how you use him. Funny thing is this; Joe Cox spent a good bit of time in the off season taking Greg Johnson fishing. Cox with Johnson, dipping their rods. Johnson had a problem learning how to bait his hook, but under the direction of Cox, Johnson has gotten much better. He went from not knowing what to do with his worm at all to the point now that he is known as a master baiter.

The major concern for the bulldogs s/b can the OL hold their blocks. Michael Turner is out only 7 OL available per MR - who are “SEC Ready”.
Appears that Cox is protecting the ball much better since the int. with WKU. Would rather have a QB, that makes the right reads, rather than a “cannon”, who never makes the right decision - remember Chris Rix at FSU - NFL arm - no brain. Stafford will be great will take time.
Regardless of ones opinion of Spurrier, Carolina should not have been on the field with Auburn. Spurrier is without question one of the top 5 best college coaches of all time. Spurrier is starting 2 FR on the offensive line- which is unheard of- indication of lack of talent.Bill Curry fired Spurrier(QB coach under Pepper Rogers) when he took over at GT - Curry does know talent-yea right!!!!!

SunDawg, we played poorly and made too many defensive mistakes. I wrote to madmerf before the game, if we play well, no problem. I think Colorada is better than SC except the QB. Newton had a good game.Brandon Cox has a high ankle sprain since LSU game, cant throw down field effectively. He has not played his big game yet. The SEC is running toward Atlanta, but if Auburn doesnt start playing better our journey will end in J-H Stadium or Bammertown.Good luck against Rebels

TOSS SWEEP!!!!! This is the game to work on it. Noticed that Auburn had some success with it last night, and their QB reverse rollout with the short toss to a dragging TE was a nice, safe gainer all night, including a TD. Cox faked handoff with all motion going right, then spun and rolled left - which makes sense. HE’S LEFT-HANDED!!!!

Bill, I usually agree with most you say in here , but am a little disappointed in your broad oversimplifications this time. You usually have a bit more technical aspect to your analysis and don’t cave to emotional gripping. BUT “problems in the first halfs of games” game(s). Which games? Sugar bowl? Surely you arent going to reference 2 great short drive in the Fl game. Wasn’t it you that argued that our offence doomed us with the drop in the first place. Fl can’t be capable of playing lights out for 5 minutes to start a game? Give me WM shuting down Fl for 14 points and 3.5 quarters of squat every year. Please. Colorado had a fast mobile accurate QB who ran that play to the TE to perfection for about a quarter, then basically not much more. Thats almost impossible to defense, (read players, coaches, comments) and we did catch up to it in time. Clearly we don’t have a defense that is geared to the style of play we rarely see in the SEC. OK. I think our offence had a huge share of the blame that CO was even on the field all day long. Defense gave up 10 points and on the field for 47 hours. Why is it that if UGA gives up any kind of points early in a game, before the offence figures out how to move the ball, its time to fire the DC???? “didn’t have a clue” Come on. Is that really a fair analysis. Exactly how many less yards would have been the difference between having a bit of trouble containing a slippery Qb and “not having a clue”? (then AU had absolutely no clue last night in the second half, I suppose) We have an entire staff of defensive coaches, some of whom are in the pressbox with binoculars. Is it really your contention that UGA had no idea what was going on? This staff obvious has a calm controlled style that is a lot more about WINNING the game, than it is about pacifying the amatuer fans with fire and bloody foreheads. And don’t even try to tell me that EVEVY single DC we have EVER had didnt trail at halftime or have a few soft quarters from his team from time to time. Even if those were totally the DC fault (which i beleive you to be too smart to actualy beleive that), we are talking what…..3/4 quarter total over 17 games? One bloddy nose to what appears to be a top 5 team, one understandable slow start against a lesser non conference team, one close lose to a huge rival that the rest of the team should have won, many , many, more example of great games, and you are “doubting the job that WM is doing”. Really? Dude, he’s the bright spot of this team right now. Thats ALL we got right now.

Zoo, yes Southern Cal will and should pass Auburn. We have not really clicked since LSU game. They were a very physical team. You can`t judge NC quality in a team at this point. Our game with SC was similar to Colo. -UGA game, just not on all cylinders. As one post said, Ohio State played 6 games down to the wire when they won NC. You better hope it’s the passing game that gets better, because a Mark Richt team will never have a strong running game. Think of all of the great tailbacks from FSU during his tenure. Now UGA. There are exactly none. It’s not the tailback’s fault. Barry Sanders could escape that delayed handoff stuff the Dawgs run. Im sick of it. It’s ACC garbage. Im a Richt fan. Don’t get me wrong. He does what it takes to keep his team in contention for an SEC championship and maybe someday, a National Championship. They will just always be force to use the pass to set up the run in this system. Eventually, UGA will struggle to recruit top backs because of it.

Reggie gone and the other TD back gone, some good offensive and defensive line gone, how could you be as strong? well I think you are, Booty needs to play, but I have followed SC recruiting and never seen such quality players at one school. UGA has done remarkable recruiting job, nothing like SC I am sorry to say. You have several advantages, one being population, hell you have more people just in Southern California as whole state of Georgia. Another being Coach Carroll. one solid coach, so SEC will be strong for years, its just we have to beat up on each other.Auburn went unbeaten in 2004,something that probably want happen again in a long time, but was not given opportunity to show it to SC…good luck

Richt has stated a few times already that he and Coach Ball are committed to keeping the number of carries that each of the our three RBs get fairly close and that we will not see one back getting 20-25 carries while the other two only get a few. I too would rather see Lumpkin being left in the game longer but MR has been clear on this point and he’s still the boss.

geechee, if the boss is committed to the equal divide amongst the RBs, then the 2-back set just might bring the guys to another level of competition! We need something else to replace that dreaded gawd awful draw we’ve been sucking at! We certainly have the personnel to make it successful, and it would take the pressure off the young guns.
While the defense was dominating during the spring, CMR flirted with the concept and it caught the ‘D’ off guard and fired up the offense. And what better way to lure top notch RB recruits than to flaunt the 2-back set?
I get the feeling we’ve been practicing some of it while keeping it a secret. When the time is right, boom!boom!boom! and then back to mixing things up. Its worth a try at least.

Remind them that this is “our house”!!!! GO DAWGS!!! My vote is for Mark Richt to address the fans and get us all freakin’ fired up. He needs us, the team needs us come kickoff tomorrow night.
