Erk must be smiling
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If the Georgia defense is going to have to carry the Dawgs for a while, you can’t ask much more than the first two consecutive shut-outs since Erk’s last team in 1980. And that was despite too many penalties that sometimes kept UAB alive. Well done, Big D!
More tomorrow.

I think I feel very comfortable with what Coaches Bobo and Richt gave Stafford to do.
I think they kept the playcalling vanilla to not show too much for the next couple of games, which should be harder. Okay, well, maybe the Colorado game won’t be so hard.
The defense was dominating, so it made sense to run the ball, especially since it was so effective.
The team looked good. Stafford looked good. The kid is tough. He’s a hell of an athlete, and man what a cannon. Goodman should have caught that pass, which Matt must have thrown about 50 yards on a rope.
Hey, and even Cox looked decent in garbage time.
Our team is strong. And because of the schedule, Tennessee could come in to a defense which had shut out 4 straight opponents!
Go Stafford, and GO DAWGS!!!

If only it had been telivised… I did listen to the game on the radio, however, and Munson was as good as ever.
This shut out is even more impressive that the S.C. one. Hard to tell on the radio but did the Defense allow them to get any closer than the our 36? Pretty dominate.
I have a Stafford infection now Dawg Nation. How about you?

Overall the D and the rest of the team looked good. Living in Kansas I have to depend on ESPN Gameplan to watch my beloved DAWGS. Still, room for improvement. Way too many penalties when we had them on the ropes. Stafford looked much more comfortable this week, and wow what a shot he took to the jaw on his fumble. Overall good efffort, but we can improve, and I’m sure that SMR will look at the negatives. Great tribute to ERK at halftime and he truly is smiling down looking at the Junkyard DAWGS reincarnated.

Except for penalties the “D” looked good. We’re gonna need the blitz before it’s all over. AU is tough but they can be stopped as LSU proved and so can LSU but man was that a “slobber knocking game’! I’m beginning to think! We still have a ways to go but lets keep on going!

Some of the attention and hype surrounding Stafford kinda leaves my head shaking. The team pretty much overwhelmed UAB and Stafford’s passing against a mickey mouse defense was about at the same level as UAB’s QB’s against UGA’s defense. His real contribution was that he didn’t screw up a rout against a clearly mismatched opponent, and that’s an accomplishment for a true freshman QB. We’re lucky the schedule is giving him time to learn. Just hate to see people build up unrealistic expectations; he’s gonna stub his toe a few times this year against the legitimate teams and I hope people don’t turn on him when it happens.

Grinder, if anyone turns against him that’ll be their problem because the vast majority of the Nation are walking with him. We expect mistakes but the thing we can’t control is how fast MR thinks he can loosen the chain. Today, he was on a very short lease but he did what he was suppose to do. The ‘06 scheduled was set way before Stafford ever set foot on campus and Colorado was a powerhouse. People forget.

Folks, since this blog is mostly a “filler” until tomorrow, I just have to brag on what an amazing dawg day I had. My brother was given 2 tickets by his area manager for 2 really good weeks at a store he mostly ran on his own. I have a 12 year old nephew, who thought today was the closest thing to Heaven he’s ever seen. My wife and I love to tailgate, and offered to drive, since they have never been to a game before. We own a white bulldog, name Larry, so we walked aroun campus and to the stadium, having a good time. Then my Brother and Nephew went in to their seats, and we headed back to a group of friends’ tailgate, where they had a satellite, to watch on TV. Larry was overheated and getting tired; but 5 minutes in the North campus fountain perked him right up. The spring was back in his step. About 50 yards from “home base”, we were given two tickets by people who were bugging out of town for some reason. I trusted my bulldog to my friend who I’ve known for 8 years, and knows not to feed dogs people food. My wife and I found My brother and son, with 2 empty seats next to them, upper row, in the corner above the Redcoat band. This was my first game since I left the student section back in ‘97, and after hearing my nephew say, “This was the best day I ever had!” I just had to say “It’s great - to be - a Georgia Bulldog!!”
I thought Stafford looked good. The Defense and SPECIAL Teams rocked. And, Stafford audibled his own number on that touchdown!

I’m watching the fl/tenn game and remembering how everyone called me crazy for saying Tenn. would be back to being tenn this year. I know it’s esrly but I really came in here to say I can’t stand urban myer. He complained about the officiating at the half and he always tries to act like he is mr. tuff with his we will be a displined team junk when his team is all but disciplined. I think urban is over his head.
Watching the lsu/aub game I came away unimpressed. I am more convinced we can sec this year then before.

3 of the 4 best teams played in the “Separation Saturday” SEC games today. Tennessee can’t run the ball, and their defense is weak - particularly with their best D lineman out after today - don’t you think it’s a bad sign for them that they were better off having the poor guy playing with a ruptured biceps than having his backup in there? (Ainge is impressive - Cutcliffe is a damn good coach; Fat Phil isn’t.) Our Dogs were very, very solid today. Coutu is a ROCK, Ely-Kelso is a ROCK. Asher was SOLID as a true freshman 3rd string returner. Prince was Super-Flash coming in to pick that ball off of UAB’s punter’s foot. Matthew was solid - UAB’s defense was set up to force disciplined drives - great training for our boys on offense. Quentin was being held every time I saw him. Tony T. went on a rampage in the late 3rd Q. Danny is running like an First Team All-SEC Back (along with Irons - damn that kid showed heart against the Bayou Bengals today - I wish Thomas would run like that sometimes!)
The secondary today? OUTSTANDING!
D-Line? Weston is a budding Monster (Quentin and Charles are full-grown)
The development of our receivers will make or break our season.
Win or lose - I love my Bulldogs.

What did the tribute to Erk consist of?
Our Colorado tickets arrived Friday. This will be my first UGA game since whenever Florida came in and my first trip to Athens since the Olympic Soccer men’s final. My 2 kids have never seen any live football game and my wife has no concept of SEC football (she went to a women’s college, and I don’t think she has ever seen a non-high school game). I wish Colorado was better than 0-3 but if we knew we’d have scheduled them for homecoming.
Spurrier only beat Wofford by 7 points.
FSU lost. Notre Dame lost. What will UGA be ranked next?

Matt BullDawg St. Lewis, you’re the 2nd person to mentioned, no,I sorry the 3rd person to mention our WRs. I posted earlier that either we don’t have any or they’re so good that our passing attack needs no work.

Dawg gone—the game was available through Pay Per View. I bought the game ($29.95 is cheaper than a ticket) and enjoyed watching it.
Ft Worth Dawg—I’ll be at the game this week, as well. Like you, I had a long stretch when I did not get back to any games, but I go once or twice a year now and I love it! Of, course, I don’t live in Texas! When I bought tickets to the Colorado game, I was not expecting CU to be 0-3. I watched the CU/ASU game on TBS last night, and CU may not score on us, either. You will not believe Sanford Stadium now—it’s gotten larger and the jumbotron is amazing. Also, Stegman Hall is gone and that whole area is reconfigured. You will not believe all the new buildings on campus. Make sure you get there in time to tour the school and see all that is new. Also, your kids will like the fact that they have Chick-fil-A in the Tate Center now—can you believe it? Have fun at the game!

WOW, Ga. still has trouble scoring on offense. 3 offensive TD’s against a terrible team and all of them rushing the ball. They will not be able to rush against Auburn or Florida. Secondary has not been tested at all. Looks like Leak and Ainge will pick them apart. The four ELITE teams in the SEC. played two of the best games we will see all year. NO way Ga. can beat any of those teams. Looks like Louisville and Michigan will jump Ga. in the polls. Big wins against big time schools. I love how Ga. is bragging about shutting our USC and UAB. If I remember correctly, USC could have kicked two field goals if the wanted to, insted of going for it on 4th down. Auburn blanked MST and then didnt let LSU inside the 30 yard line untill the last play of the game. Auburn’s defense is what yall need to be talking about.

Flowers gone for the season….with a foot injury? Something fishy here. Fabris was in the face of Flowers after his first fair(y) catch seemingly warning him not to fair catch again. What does Flowers do but fair(y) catch the next punt….and is immediately escorted off the field. And a trainer won’t allow Flowers to speak with the media? Huh?

Hey, Mike, if the other teams don’t score, the number of offensive touchdowns Georgia scores is irrelevant. Coulda, shoulda, woulda doesn’t put points on the board. Auburn and LSU are 2 teams that can not move the ball. It does not matter what they do agains the Mississippi States of the world, this game showed what happens when they face a defense of Georgia’s caliber. I feel good about UGA the rest of the way due to: 1) Our defense; and, 2) the fact that Auburn, Florida and Tennessee all showed they can not move the ball against stiff defenses. Shoot, Tennessee’s defense is full of holes right now and Florida barely escaped with thier lives!
By Mike

Hey Clay, AU and LSU cant move the ball against “great defenses”? Ga. is not moving the ball against “terrible” defenses. Ga. has not played a team ranked higher than 45th. AU and LSU defenses and offenses are both better than Ga. Ga. will have 8 wins agaist teams with a losing record this year. BSC will not reward an easy schedule.

Texas dawg, what he “seemingly” told Flowers was not to fair catch a ball that would prabably have bounced into the endzone. Not , never, ever, under circumstance, is a fair catch acceptable. Flowers tore a ligament in his foot and that will prabably ends his football career at Georgia. See, as a player, he is prabably a tad disappointed he doesnt get to play anymore. Sometimes you just dont run out and hold a press conference about such an emotional setback. Trainers might not always force somebody who just suffered a career ending injury to sit in front of a camera within hours of that happening. You prabably dont get the post game show, so I thought you would appreciate the correct information.

Mike , what a stupid post but coming from a Barner that’s says it all.
Until you played LSU, you had played no one.If not for two huge blown interference calls near your goal line, LSU wins by at least a TD. The whole nation will agree too after seeing the replays. LSU got hosed by the refs big time.
Your schedule is easier than Georgia’s too pal. You play a bunch of patsies and play eight games at home including Florida and Georgia.
Georgia’s defense is every bit as strong and fast as Auburn. Your offense is better at this point but you won’t score many against this quicker Georgia D.
We will see on the field how well you do against Florida and Georgia. You are supposed to win them all this year anyway.

After watching the game for learning purposes, I ve figured some things out. 1. defense: look good so far and we don’t need the blitz pkg. like other teams do. 2. I now know what a MANAGED “O” is, and the plays called yesterday along with Stafford not throwing an int. must be it. Our WR must be good because they didn’t need any work on a vertical passing game. Don’t worry Joe T., the Dawgs are running your type of “O” so it’ll be here when you return. Guess Stafford must not have any special talents because we aren’t working on them but we doing a great job of making sure that he can run our plays. We’ll save his talent for his yr. year that way we’ll know he can manage a game our way. ……Yea Right!!!

Do we have 8 linebackers on the field? It seemed that Munson was callin Taylor, Jackson, and Verdun Wheeler’s names all game long. Our front 7 is ridiculous. I don’t think anyone will be able to move the ball on these Junkyard Dawgs all year. See you in Atlanta this December.

War Eagle, those were from the AP—the poll that does not count toward BCS standings. Actually, I think UGA is #9 instead of 8. The USA Today poll (which does count toward BCS standings) has UGA #7, Auburn #3, and LSU #11.

Ga. can’t move the ball against bad defenses? 90 pts. in 3 games? That’s a 30 pt. average, not bad for a team who’s breaking in a true freshman qb without opening the playbook! Stafford will introduce his true self when the situation calls for such. The INTs in the 2nd game were a result of an inexperienced leader getting greedy after broken plays. The valuable experience (practicing with the 1st team) is coming along nicely, and if that wasn’t scary enough, that dominant ‘D’ is chock full of young guys flying around who will only get better!!!!
As W.E. mentioned above, good to see the SEC getting due credit.

LSU either cannot tackle, and their players were playing with the flu. Or, Kenny Irons is scary. I know our front seven can handle him though. The UT-UF game just proved that neither team can tackle, or cover a receiver. I am definately worried about them equally now. (Either they have great individual talent; or a lot of mediocre defenders.) Our chances look good this year. After seeing both UT and UF move the ball around on each other, and make a lot of mistakes, we will be able to answer a lot of questions against the Vols, I think.
Another shutout against the Colorado Buffs this week I think. Keep setting records for shutouts and points-per-game average, and people like Mike will only be able to spout their stupid mouths off about things that don’t matter.

Oh yeah the topic is the D, hard to follow after the absoles start posting. The D is awesome. Moses and Johnson are our next opponets worst nightmare. The LB’s you have to mention them but they are excelling past the point of description as always. Our poor secondary, shot full of holes. Hey whoever was shooting missed, we reloaded and in the words of Erk, God bless his name, they are GATA. I am so proud of this defense. They are Junkyard Dawgs. Who wants to chip in and send them all a collar. Go boys Erk is right beside you pushing the dawg tradition. As a man who watched the man, Erk, I could not be more proud. You guys make me proud to be a Dawg. Now GATA.

I LOVE SEC football! Georgia has an excellent team; so do Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. It’s by far the most exciting time of the sports year as far as I’m concerned. Go Dawgs!
