Stafford’s first start
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My friend Jack, who’s not a Georgia grad or even a Georgia fan, came by my desk yesterday to tell me his reaction on viewing the Dawgs game on TV last week.
After watching young Matthew Stafford and his howitzer arm for a few plays, Jack told his wife, “This kid could turn me into a fan.”
Yeah, Stafford’s career is just beginning and he’s got a lot to learn. But already names like Favre and Ellway are being mentioned by non-Georgia observers when they’re asked who Stafford reminds them of.
Saturday brings Stafford’s first start at QB for the Dawgs. Even though the game itself may not be that great (Georgia rarely brings its A-game to these lower profile nonconference affairs), that alone has me excited.
Watching this kid grow and get better is going to be really fun.

Bill: Thanks for the new topic. Need ‘em more often from you, please. As someone else pointed out earlier this week, that was probably the best 3-INT performance you’ll ever see. The kid is a cool customer, can feel the backside pressure and do something about it, and the team has confidence with him in there. It’s been fun already. Well on his way to getting that seasoning he needs. Schedule sets up great for us over next 3 games to get more of it. Wonder what it’s like for him to finally be #1 in practice all week leading up to a start.

Bill, originally I had not planned on watching this game as I live in TN and have a Sat am commitment. But since Stafford is starting, I’ll be glued to the set @1:00pm sharp. Matt will make this an exciting game to watch. Thank goodness for ESPN Gameplan.

It’s Elway big man. We’ll see how the comparisons shake out. I just know, with the Stafford in the game, the season got a lot more interesting.

…and I did say “the Stafford”, because in a few years they will change the name from the Heisman to the Stafford.

The most important thing about Stafford starting is what his teammates have been saying about him.
After the Spring Game, I said that I knew that the team, especially the offense, had more confidence in Stafford than they did Joe T. I was ridiculed by all of the blind homers, guys like Hunk and Altamaha. But I knew I was right, because my source was unimpeachable.
And now, I’ve been proven right again.
The guys on this team, the recievers, the line, and the backs can’t say enough about Matthew and how excited they are to play with him.
Notice that not any of them, not a single one said anything like that about Joe T. Oh, they may have mentioned his loyalty in waiting around like Shock did a month ago, but none of them ever said that playing with Joe T excited them, or that they felt more confident with Joe T on the field.
But that is what guys like Ware and Milner have been saying since last Saturday.
I feel sorry for Joe T, and I’m sorry that it happened this way, and I know the kid wants to come back in the worst way. But the best thing for this team right now, and expecially for the future, is for Joe T to silently blend into the backround were he’s always been, and frankly belongs, and make way for the Present and the Future.
And I know that Coach Richt, out of loyalty, probably would start Joe T against Tennessee no matter how well Stafford has been playing, and that is unfortunate, because we cannot beat Tennessee with Joe T. And the guys on offense, the guys who block, run the ball, and catch the passes (and those guys prefer lasers, not wounded ducks) know that.
I know Coach doesn’t want a player to lose their position because of injury, but he has to do what is best for this team, like Bill Belichik did in 2001.
Go with the better option at QB, not the guy who’s been here the longest. Stafford will play three games against opponents which we should beat, and he will get progressively better every week. Coach couldn’t have asked for a better way to get Matt ready to play Tennessee.
But Joe T trying to come back could throw a whole wrench into a season that should be special. Sometimes doing what is best for team flies into doing what is best for you.
Matthew Stafford gives this team the best chance to win every game he plays. That doesn’t mean he’ll be perfect, or that he won’t make mistakes, even mistakes that could cost us a game (because he will). But we have to be willing to accept that, and so does Coach, for the future of this program.
All Joe T brings to the table is a chance not to lose. And all I have to remind y’all to do is watch any Falcons game where the offense is called by Greg Knapp to show you just how badly playing not to lose can go. Joe T cannot bring us back when we’re beind more than one score. Joe T’s arm is so weak, that because his passes take longer to get to recievers, he constantly throws behind them or they have to wait on it to get there, that the defense can break them up, or even worse, recievers can get hurt because of a weak-armed QB.
The best thing Joe T can do for this team is to quietly fade into the backround, help out where he can (special teams, maybe?) be a mentor to Stafford, and basically just be what he’s always been. A loyal Dawg, a good Dawg, and most importantly, an unselfish Dawg.
I know that’s a lot to ask of a 23 year old kid, but it’s what’s best for this team. His offensive teammates know it, and I can only hope that Coach knows it. Because if he starts Joe T against Tennesse or Florida, he’ll be making the biggest mistake of his career here. Worse than Jasper on the goal line. Worse than not letting Auburn score last year to give our offense time. Worse than not making sure our punt team knew that a fake punt was highly likely in the Sugar Bowl. And worse than all of those other clock blunders which seem to plague him to this day.
The Dawgs should win or lose with Stafford.

And Bill, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…
You need to have Carter Strickland’s job.
Yes, he may have a decent column every now and again. Heck, every idiot can have a good day every now and again.
But he is a subpar journalist. He has a barely veiled hatred of the SEC. He has an air of an elitist snob from the Left Coast when it comes to football.
And in his last blog, he acted like his various topics weren’t currently in print, like he was giving us something new; yet I read them all week in the Athens Banner-Herald. I mean, he ripped-off the Banner-Herald!
Come on Bill, for us Dawg Fans… you need to do what you can do and just take the job that should be yours from this uppity @$$ from out west.
Us Dawg fans shouldn’t have to suffer Carter Strickland anymore!

Hey Reality, you idiot!
Bill’s not making those comparisons. The guys at ESPN are, and were. Guys like noted Georgia Hater Mark May as well as Reece Davis were saying that. Mort has commented on it, and of course, Mel Kiper, Jr. has stated it.
Man, you’d realize that if you actually had any ability at reading comprehension.
I thought you Bugs at the NATS were smart?
I guess your admissions process was being able to do that “V” Star Trek hand salute and being able to recite word for word famous Star Wars and Star Trek quotes, right?
Talk about an overrated reputation for your school, moron.

Does ANYONE know of a bar here in the ATL area that will be showing the game? I have heard it is blacked out in GA on ESPN Gameplan, and the bars I have called said they won’t know if they can show it until late today or early tomorrow morning. I live very close to downtown ATL and am pretty flexible about where I go to watch, so long as it is not Buckhead. And I actually have to go out to Conyers for some errands early in the morning Saturday, so anything out that way would be even better!

There is talk of the NCAA taking the 2004 National Championship Title from USC if the allegations surrounding Reggie Bush prove true. If this happens, who should get the title and why?
I think AwDarn should get since they finished #2 in the final poll and were clearly a better team than Oklahoma. I’m sure Oklahoma will say they should have it since they were #2 going into the NCG and #1 USC technically forfeited thereby they won. A rather sticky wicket.

I am used to seeing Spurrier act like a child on the sidelines when he doesn’t get his way, but this crap about the officiating is downright babyish! I hope they review the ENTIRE game, maybe then Bobby Gaston could show Spurrier how his depleted O-line was able to “hold off” the nation’s top DE tandem! They were doing what they were TAUGHT to do! Then they may figure out how SC’s cornerback managed to change direction in mid-air on the goalline deflection for an INT! And finally, they may get a closer look at those questionable pass interference calls that went against us. Typical CRYBABY A$$!!!! The officiating didn’t cost SC the game, which BTW wasn’t even close, but the play calling did. Spurrier will never in his miserable life accept the blame for his failures. Same as it ever was……..

Shouldn’t take a National Championship away from USC. And if you do, you leave it vacant. These have to be won ON the field, not off it. Take Bush’s Heisman away, though, no doubt.

Bird Dawg, Enough is enough my man. I also have been a big supporter of Stafford going ahead and starting even if it costs a game or two this year. But quit bashing Joe T and “blind homers” just because Stafford is starting now and everyone- me included- is predicting greatness for him. I mean, how many “I told you so” posts are you going to write? Quit being a jack-a*. Oh, and your ” yeah Joe-T has been a good Dawg” and all that doesn’t make up for you consistently throwing him under the bus. Why is it that pro-Joe T guys can’t voice their opinions without you basically calling them complete idiots? Also, should Bill King be looking over his shoulder with all this “inside info” that you have? You’ve made your damn point man, move on. If you are the Dawg fan that you claim to be, respect other Dawg fan opinion’s. If you want to disagree, great, but do it with some class. And again- MOVE ON TO A DIFFERENT SUBJECT!!!!!!

“Any fan who doesn’t think his or her team is the best isn’t really a fan at all.”
I completely disagree with this statement. As a fan, I will pull for my team, bask in glorious victories, and suffer when they are defeated. I watch the games over and over - I wear out a VCR every two years or so - but I’ll never claim that they are any better than I think they are.
Right now, UGA is not the number one team in the country. The Dawgs are MY team, just as they’re YOUR team, but they’re not the best college football team in the country right now. There’s no other team I’d rather watch, however. They’ve got a chance to do something special this year, but my personal feeling is that the lack of linemen is going to hurt. We can’t keep going into games with only six active offensive linemen and survive our schedule.
Or maybe this is all because I was there during the Vince Dooley years: “Well, Larry, I just don’t know how we’re going to keep those East Yackumpuckey State linebackers out of our backfield. They’re said to weigh over 150 pounds each and can run the 40 in under 6 seconds.. I’ve not been able to get any tapes to study, as noone has ever thought to tape an East Yackumpuckey State game, but I’ll tell you - these guys worry me a lot.”

Brad, those are some outstanding points you made. Sat,today, is INO the start of “well lets see’. From here on it’s a one game at a time process. I’m pulling for Stafford big time just like the “Nation” is and the few things that have shown so far have me really excited! The way he handles the media has been remarkable, his not being afraid to speak out and his leadership both verbally and non verbale are something I haven’t saw or heard at Ga. for a long time. Reminds me of a Buck Belue. So, here in Seattle I’ll be partying with a bunch of other Dawgs as we prepare to cheer him on. Reptile Relative at 1st was laughing at the “Nation”! He’s not now and is saying “we’ll see you at the Party”. It’s my team and we’re NOT the best in the country but Boy do I think we may be down the line.

Brad, I know the DAWGS aren’t perfect this year and I’ve expressed concern about the o-line, but like the rest of the DAWG NATION I want this team to be the best in the SEC. My comment was directed at the jacka$$ who seemed to think ANY support of this year’s team was a waste of time.
I also don’t have the expertise to clinically dissect each component of the team and comment on it; I’ll leave that to you guys. But I’m a fan and believe that on any given Saturday (or Thursday) this team can win. I don’t talk about NCs, but with a little luck we can repeat for the SEC title.
