UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Here’s your Georgia football fix

How ‘bout a little football?!

I know, I know, you guys can never get enough regardless of the time of year. Certainly we don’t write as much as we do during the season and there’s not as much going on right now. But both Tim Tucker and I have been over at the football complex a couple of times each the last two weeks as the Bulldogs go through mat drills and offseason workouts and such. We’ve been gathering interviews and information for stories we’ll be providing weekly all the up until spring practice starts next month.

Unfortunately we’re writing only a couple of stories a week for the paper, so a lot of commentary and info we’re collecting is stacking up. I’m here to empty that out a little bit today.

On Wednesday I interviewed Jeff Owens, Logan Gray, A.J. Green and Joe Cox. Some of this stuff you’ll see in the paper in the coming days.

  • I was talking to Owens, the senior defensive tackle, about his new blog called “Jeff Owens: The Real Deal” (his latest entry is a Q&A with Cox). Unfortunately just about every other reporter that covers the Dogs was interviewing him at the same time, so you may read some about it somewhere else before my story appears. Nevertheless, Owens was his normal jovial self and went on and on about his blog and how well it’s taking off and how much he enjoys doing it. He said he started it because he wants “to let people know the real inside scoop of the college athlete and our everyday lives and what we go through from time to time.” He admitted to being totally obsessed with it and trying to write something every day. Anyway, I’ll have more details in the story I write that’ll appear online Friday.

In the meantime, the football scoop on Owens is his right knee is healing right on schedule. He said it’s at about 50 percent of full strength now and he started running about three weeks ago. I happened to catch a glimpse of Jeff through a window in the weight room and he was doing step-ups on a box about three feet off the ground without any trouble… .

  • Logan Gray was another guy I wanted to talk to because I feel like he has kind of been overlooked by the Joe Cox anointment and all the attention that has gone to the two freshman signees. The most pertinent news regarding Logan is that he is no longer going to play on any special teams for the foreseeable future. Or at least as long as he remains at quarterback and he plans to stay there for the duration. In fact, Logan told me the special teams were fun, important and helpful for getting used to the speed of the college game but probably held him back as a quarterback.

“I definitely think so,” Gray said. “We do a lot of our quarterback stuff warming up and throwing the ball and going through practice reps. That’s all going on while special teams practice is going on. Missing that every single day you just, when you’re losing out on reps it just kind of catches up to you. I think that’s probably why I — I don’t know if I regressed — but I wasn’t getting better at the rate I thought I should have been during the season last year. I’m just excited now to just be focusing on quarterback and getting back into it.” …

  • With A.J. Green, I just wanted an update on his groin injury and find out what he thought about Marlon Brown signing on as a receiver mate. Green had a good laugh when I asked him how it felt to be asked, “how’s the groin?” every time somebody talks to him. For the record, he said “a lot better” and “getting better every day” and that he’s moving around better than he did all last season. As for Brown, Green said he got to him “pretty well” during the recruiting season and has watched some tape on him. He thinks they’ll make a pretty lethal pair.

“They’re not going to be double-teaming me all the time,” he said of opposing defenses. “[Brown] can stretch the field, too, with his size and speed. He attacks the ball whenever it’s in the air. He’s a basketball guy like me. That always gives you an advantage to go up and attack the ball like you do on the basketball court. He’s good.”

  • I talked to Joe Cox mostly for some of these other stories but he did tell me that they’ve been doing a little bit of 7-on-7 drills out on the practice fields. “The ones we’ve done have been real productive,” Cox said. “Everybody’s been out there, a lot of young guys who are having to step up this year. And they’ve been doing good. Everybody wants to learn and that’s been good to see.”

So there’s your football fix. Feel better now.

If not, there’s a little more in these here links… .

Here’s a good detailed look at the oversigning trend by rivals.com.. Apparently Ole Miss didn’t get the award for most greedy. That goes to Troy, which signed 40… .

Oklahoma State football proclaimed its 2009 schedule as “one of America’s most daunting,” due in large part because it opens the season against Georgia on Sept. 5. By the way, the Georgia game has been designated the season’s ‘premium game’; by the Cowboys, meaning other than 5,000 tickets, only season-ticket holders will be allowed to purchase tickets… .

We couldn’t go a day without a story on something that came out of the mouth of Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin now could we? …

This is a little farther away from home but I thought this story on former Arizona standout Jay Dobyns was really cool and ought to make an awesome book, which he has written. He was a stud receiver for the Wildcats before going on to become an ATF agent who went undercover and infiltrated the Hells Angels motorcycle gang. Can you say “tough?”

I’m excited about this year because it will be all about about Florida and Teebow as far as the national press in concerned and we will be referred to as the underachieving team who has lost their best two players. We will not be on anybody’s radar and I like that. We WILL be better than last year. Cox will be perfect for this offense and is a leader. The OL will be super. The defense will be better. We will surprise some people this year. GO DAWGS

OK, now that all charges have been dropped against Jarrard Tarrant, which one of you clowns is going to be man enough to apologize first?

I blogged when the story first broke that you guys needed to wait and see what transpired before you crucified the kid. But you a!!holes couldn’t wait to get on line and start typing, like you knew what happened. What a bunch of jerks.

Maybe……………….bulldawg will be first with an apology? Nah I doubt it, I said man enough, not boy enough.

I’m sorta new to this hatred thing, but I can sure understand it. You guys were real quick to forget all about Tony Coles huh? Selective memory is a b*.

Anyway, congratulations Jarrard. I hope you’re on the field after Thanksgiving this year, to help hand the most overrated football program in the United States their second series loss in a row.

Hey, maybe Odell will be endowing a scholarship at UGA like Texiera did at Tech yesterday.

Stafford’s gonna be a great clip board holder! I hope Knowshon doesn’t take himself out of the games too much in the NFL. I predict two busts —- then they can rely on their UGA degrees to make a living - not!

Nice UGA notes

So what can Logan do at Quarterback? Will he do it in the Spring?

I am interested to see what Owens has to say. It will be a good lesson for us all.

What does AJ think of the possibillity that there may be 5 receivers out at a lot of times?

Joe Cox, may turn out to be the Russ Cassels of UGA.

Ramble On, I think we just started another muti year streak.

Otto, don’t worry, Cutcliffe is just around the corner. The last Duke coach that came to the conference did quite well now didn’t he?

Dogs should be good this year, but so should everyone we play. I hope having the tough “daunting” schedule does more for the Okies than it did for all of us in the Bulldog nation.

Hey Poultry Science Fool,

Bring on your bumbling bees, and your half raised as I heard your prized recruit say “AFALETZ”

I Matt does as well as Reggie Ball, or some of those famous Yellow Jackasses that are in the NFL.

Comparing thing, how about faking the grades of all of your student atheletes. We flunked Coles out. You fake grades to keep yours in. Turn your little beanie around, and figure it out on your slide rule. By the way, I saw your class ring while you were picking your nose! Then you were got your white socks dirty while you were putting on your Ga Tech Old Gold Leisure Suit. Maybe you can get a job designing some more of the world renowned intersections along the I 85 corridor, or better yet a new design for your most famous graduate accomplishment, that bastion of health food and high quality workers and clientale, Waffle House.

Stay in your mom’s basement, or go to Grant Field and figure out how to design some toilets! The ones there from 1918 are a little out of date.

As soon as one of you clowns apologize about the charges being dropped on the majority of our arrests. It’s funny how quick you guys are to crucify the Georgia arrests only to say nothing when the charges are dropped, but when it’s one of the Tech players you get mad when someone does the same. I do realize there are georgia fans who do the same. But what is funny is that it took almost a year for the charges to be dropped. Did it take that long to negotiate the bribe money? Of course, as we learned the many times Joe Hamilton’s actions were swept under the rug, Tech’s PR dept is very skilled in covering up what happens. Any Tech student knows exactly what I’m talking about, regardless of what they will admit on here.

Jdawg34, only 8 more months.

Then that vaulted UGAg defense comes to town to stop that very same offense that racked up 45 points and 409 rushing yards, only to take a knee in the closing minutes of the game.

So, I know who this AJ Green dude is. He is only concerned with his individual numbers and goals, but Gray, Cox, some high school receiver who wants to play in front of Grandma?

Who are these nitwits and should I be scared?

This upcoming season is a lot like 2006 when there was no set starter at QB. I think Joe can manage the team, but what’s going to be interesting to see is whether or not Bobo will turn him lose to run the offense and have faith in him even when he struggles( and he’ll have those weeks when he will). What I don’t want to see is a 3 man rotation at QB like they had in 2006 with Joe T., Joe Cox, and Stafford. This offense needs consistency. If the team is 6-4 towards the end of the season, then Richt just needs to go with the most talented guy and build the offense around him. I think Cox will be better than Joe T.. Terenshinski just could carry the team, and like Logan Gray, Richt allowed him to play special teams because there were no plans for him. I mean would you really allow your QB to play long snapper or return punts if you knew he’d eventually be your 1# guy? It seems that the coaching staff have more expectations with Joe, hence the reason I don’t think he’ll be a total bust. 8-4 or 9-4 at best this year.

Folks, don’t pay any service to these interlopers. When you begin to read a blog and it strikes you that it’s against the team and this blog, then don’t read any further. Ignore them away. This means they will rachet up the swill to push you for a reply. I propose that if no one replies to the highschoolers and when no one gets upset(by not reading them) they will go away. We can talk UGA football while the idiots jump up and down to attract your attention and are waiting for a reply. Jerks are everywhere. Ignore them and they go away. Reply to them and they become worse with their insults to our program and you personally. The only ones needing a reply are those who come on here as Dawgs and they are not.

Good for you, Chip. A regular fix is ample reward for the time many devote to discussions and cheering on here. How about another on Friday, next Monday, etc. Aw, you get the picture. Just because games are not played doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate news that we have to pay for on other venues. That disgusts me to pay for news about my own college team. I have never nor will I ever join and pay for info so that someone can use my e-mail to send advertisements. Always read the small print!

I would like to see more on Logan. His honest efforts at regarding himself subjectively is a fresh bucket of cool water thrown on us. Same with Jeff’s column. I blogged recently that it would be great to have reactions purportedly by UgaVII as to what he overhears from the game bench and practices. Light and funny stuff, not gossip. Maybe I’ll propose it to Jeff. Can’t you guys pick up his column and reprint(per his and team’s permission) here in the AJC? We are anxious for some in-depth info on our players. It would help allay remarks that are insensitive toward individuals, staff and team. Knowing the players as individuals would make great human interest stories and would help your sports page(s) as well. How about stories with no player’s names mentioned that are interesting pathos and joyous events in the lives of these individuals? Who knows, it could be Pulitzer material. And it would be good reading for us.

Funny about Tech fans…lets recall

7 years of tell us on blogs how they were going to win…only to lose

in 2007 they beat Notre Dame and the talk was Tech are going to go undefeated. We are going to beat Georgia. And they lost

They won by 3 points last year, and they talk about how they blew us out, how they whipped us.

So the fact is in the 2000 era they have won 2 twice and we have won 7 times. They have never won the ACC title, we have won the SEC twice. They have been to one BCS bowl…well you get the picture.

Tech’s program is a joke. Coach Johnson has and will improve it ( while he is there) but if he can win 10 games they will consider him a saint. 10 wins for Georgia is an average year.

93,000 fans in the Stands at UGA. 38,000 at Tech.

Now 45-42 that for a few more months, and then you will get a chance to come back to reality.

My interpretation of Logan Gray playing on special teams is that he is too good of an athlete to not be on the field contributing in some way. I agree that he is probably not best suited at QB. I would continue to let him be the sure handed punt returner in tight situations. Maybe get him the ball as a receiver in a tunnel screen or other screen type play, reverse, or let him throw from one of those lateral double throw plays. Other than mixing him in now & then he doesn’t seem to fit into the normal scheme. Thoughts?

I can only imagine the hilarity that would ensue if Georgia Tech got to a BCS bowl. They would probably throw a parade and build a 30 foot statue of Paul Johnson, beer gut and all. 31-0 at the half?!!

Hope UGA, Florida and BAMA all steam roll the Vols next year - but Kiffin is doing all of this to make Tennessee relevent with free publicity and the media is lapping it up. Look how much press coverage he is getting.

One of my Vol buddies told me that the inmates are no longer running the asylum in Knoxville. 5:30AM conditioning - no ear rings - no hats worn inside buildings - class attendence mandatory. IN short - he will not meet players half way - he understands that the Vols needed a JOLT of tough love.

Vols do have talent - last year - defense was very good but they never clicked to the new OC and his system.

I personnally think they will be a better team - which is bad for UGA as they have beaten you guys like a drum 2 out of 3 years. I mean absolutely humiliating UGA in Athens in 2006 and Knoxville in 2007.

At any rate - it would be funny if Kiffen got blasted by Florida, South Carolina, UGA and BAMA - as he has had smart A$$ comments to each program.

Someone stated that Tech has been in a BCS bowl.

I am not aware of Tech ever having played in a BCS bowl which are now the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose Bowls.

The best Tech has ever done since the BCS started in the 1990’s was the Gator Bowl twice, and won one of those games.

I don’t think an ACC team has ever won a BCS bowl game. The ACC champion has never won the Orange Bowl which is their automatic bid.

In fact, the only ACC team that has ever played in a BCS bowl game other than the Orange Bowl is FSU.

Miami played in some BCS bowls before joining the ACC.

Perhaps whatever conference Utah plays in should get the automatic bid to the Orange Bowl and the BCS should drop the ACC. I know the tv viewers have.

If Jeff continues to write a little each day he will find that his thoughts will become more organized, his retention will improve and his vocabulary will increase. Not bad traits for someone that wants to be a sportscaster or sports talk show host one day. It is no accident that the best announcers usually write very well. As for Kiffin’s remarks, they have become just another form of white noise to me. I am as bored with Kiffin as I am with the steroid issue in baseball. Please, no more Kiffin quotes, he is like the middle child, just acting out to draw attention to himself and the UT program. I agree that Green and Brown should be a tough cover for any D backfield. They are similar in many ways, but different in styles. Green is the slicker reciever of the two, more like a Randy Moss. Brown is more physical but less polished, more like T.O. Let’s hope Brown doesn’t develope the latter’s habits.

Bama Stan, I thought the previous poster had a good one with the “21-0 at the end of the 1st qtr”.

I know this is going to rile you up, but you sound a lot like tech fans this year. You guys finally have a good (if not great) season and you’re talking smack to everyone. Granted, I think Bama will be more likely to sustain the momentum from 2008 better than tech, but your mentioning the humiliation at the hands of UT in 2006 and 07 fails to recognize the following:

In 2006 Bama lost to MISSISSIPPI STATE for crying out loud, 24 - 16, and the game was in Tuscaloosa!

In 2007 Bama lost to Louisiana Monroe, 21 - 14, again in Tuscaloosa. Talk about humiliating!!

At least when UT handed it to us they were considered much more formidable than Miss St and LM.

BILLY, BILLY, BILLY…wasn’t that 7, SEVEN, VII YEARS AGO IN YOUR TRAILOR PARK?

Hmmm, how bout a nice 48-0 Beatdown since we’re going back to irrelevant history.

ps, watch you spelling, the one-armed Maddog will get upset. Don’t ask why his other arm is in a cast.

Trust me on this one. We don’t want to know.

You are coming to our shrine this year. We’re going to empty the benches on you. I’m thinking 52-3 on these rings.

Believe me, RAMBLE ON, I would NEVER pretend to be you. Perhaps you should try reading the posts again. No attempts to “pretend” to be anyone, especially you.

By the way, why did it take you so long to pull out the “UGAy” thing? You tekkies are soooo clever!! Must come from all the calculus classes you took, if you are/were indeed a student at tech.

Hey Bama Stan, I bet I had a better time in Orlando than you had in New Orleans.

Bama is now 0-2 in its last 2 games, and you may want to cool it down some.

RAMBLE ON, very good. You remember my post from yesterday mentioning my arm is in a cast. Hmmm, that supports my contention that RAMBLE ON, STEVE SUPERIOR, AND KNEEJERK (aka CIRCLEJERK) are indeed one and the same. The Three Stooges!!

You say you don’t want to know why my arm is in a cast. We’re even, because I certainly don’t want to know about the “rod” you said hasn’t been in you for a while.

Shouldn’t you log out and go back to doing your calculus?

Billy, the clever likes of Maddog talk about 7 out of 8 until UF comes up in the subject. Then Maddog starts making his gay insults (so I played along with the UGAy thing).

38-3 is a popular rebuttal by the likes of Maddog, and other assorted fleabags. I don’t think it has any relevance either. I just threw 49-10 in there for Saddog.

RAMBLE ON, you keep on stepping in it. Did you stoop to the bottom of the barrel and mention the 48-0 game in 1943? You probably did. Let’s see, WWII was ongoing and players from both squads left the team for the war. However, tech had a Naval Officers training school and many talented football players from colleges across the country were enrolled in that program and, therefore, played as “Tech” players. That made things real fair now, didn’t it.

Why not go all the way back to the big 222-0 drubbing of the mighty Cumberland football team in 1916? Here’s a couple of things to remember about that shining moment:

(1) Who was the coach that exhibited such sportsmanship by running up the score? Why, none other than John Heisman. Amazing, even back then tech was filled with men of “character”.

(2) This one’s even better. Cumberland had actually discontinued its football program before the season, however, the “character” drenched leaders at tech were going to enforce a financial penalty if Cumberland failed to show up for the game. As a result, the Cumberland team student manager rounded up a team 14 players, many of whom were his fraternity brothers.

Georgia Tech. Ah yes, building “character” all the way back to 1916.

RAMBLE ON, still having comprehension problems? Please find just ONE post where I have mentioned 38-3. It’s not there. You cannot find ONE post where I’m using someone elses score to take a dig at tech. You’re a typical pompous tech a-hole, ignorant of the facts and acting holier than thou. Now you’ve enlisted FLORIDA to do your fighting for you? Further reinforcement that you also post under Steve Superior. How lame. What’s next, Ramble On, you gonna say your dad can whip my dad? LMAO. Better go hide behind your mother’s apron so you can talk some more trash.

By the way RAMBLE ON, STEVE SUPERIOR, and whatever other names you decide to post under. Since you like to enlist Florida to do your bidding I came up with a couple of quick facts for you.

UF’s proud football history stretches all the way back to 1990. During this time they have dominated UGA with a record of 16-3. I guess that makes you feel better about tech. I don’t know how, but I guess it does.

During this same 19 year period, UGA has a record of 14-5 over tech. Isn’t this what we should really be concerning ourselves with if the discussion is how you feel the big bad yellow jackets are better than UGA?

You are truly delusional, Ramble Steve, but I’ll hand it to you, you are consistently delusional.

Shouldn’t you wrap things up in the cubicle for the day?

In regards to the OSU schedule, I think the Cowboys are expecting to beat UGA and thats a little more far-fetched than one might think. The losses to graduation will affect them more than ours will affect us. We bring far mor experience and talent along the line of scrimmage than they do and that is huge early in the season when continuity is so important. Uga 24 Osu 17.

February 12, 2009 5:56 PM | Link to this

doug, I hope you’re right. If I remember right, UGA led the SEC in yards passing, yards receiving, and yards rushing. If that is true, then we’ve lost the man passing for those yards, one of the two main receivers catching those passes, and the running back who accounted for the lion’s share of those yards. I think Moreno’s loss will be the biggest hole to fill. Somebody has to step up and make plays for us to be successful.

Wow, Maddog and Ramble On have made this their own personal battle zone.

Think I’ll throw my two cents’ worth in.

Tech won this year. I think we all know this by now. It’s about time that the Jackets put this in the historical context that it belongs in (but, as we all know, that won’t happen. Heck, they still talk about the “national titles” they won a hundred years ago as though they are relevant).

The thing that interests me about both Lane Kiffin and Georgia Tech is that they talk about “next year” as though a few things are done deals. For example, Kiffin’s so certain that he’s going to paint the SEC day-glo orange that he’s willing to insult every other coach in the SEC before the season starts. And that’s fine if he can back it up. But he won’t.

Vols fans are going to be awfully nostalgic for the “Phat Phil” era by the time next bowl season rolls around. I suspect UT will be a shade better next season. Like 6-6, maybe. Only their coach will run his mouth so much that even they will be embarassed.

And note that Ramble On and other Tech fans are predicting a blowout win by the Jackets in the ATL next season. Well, anything can happen, but I doubt that Georgia will come into that game lacking in focus next season. If I were a betting man, I wouldn’t bet against the dawgs in a revenge game. If it gets ugly in Atlanta next season, it’ll likely be at the Jackets’ expense.

heeldawg, saddog won’t shut up. I really don’t want to talk about “next year” I like talking bout this 45-42 year.

Billy and Saddog like talking bout “next year”.

I’m going to leave you now with Saddog.

FYI, anymore blogs from RAMBLE ON today is Saddog trying to set up another lame joke.

Doug, The OSU game will be tough to win. A new qb and rb will probably lead to a lot of three and out.We do not have a punter! The heat will be unreal and it will be just a matter of time before they wear us down and open up that big 12 flag football offense.

Here’s the real problem. Having to come back and play USC. The last time we went out west and came back for a home game, we didn’t show up until the third qtr(see bama stan for verification). Unless we have a couple of miracles and some freshmen step up and play, we could start off 0-2. The good news is we have an open week before the fla game.

I hope we are looking at another season like 2005, but I’m afraid it will be more like 2006.And yes Ramble on!!!, 9-4 is now a bad season for the Dawgs.

Gee Murf, maybe we should just skip the 2009 football season.

The heat will be unreal. Dude do you live in Georgia?

Mad, give up and let the Bugs have their celebration. Many of our fans did the same after our first win in forever versus the Gators. The difference is that most of us quit after the weekend of the game. It must be hard being the little brother of football in the state of Georgia. Dawgs eldest, Falcons the middle child and the Bugs calling for Ma bringing up the rear.

Losses against LSU and Florida. This season will end soon. I think KNOW YOUR DAWGS needs to run earlier this year because we all know the drill:

2nd loss- start the blabber about firing at least one coach and start the recruiting, next year’s our year talk.

Two weeks before Tech game- stir up the hate

After Thanksgiving- get heavy into the recruting talk and how great its going to be with Tebow gone.

Repeat this drill every year. Covering UGA has got to be a sportswriter’s cakewalk.

“Covering UGA has got to be a sportswriter’s cakewalk.”

Hmm, I wonder what it’s like to cover NATS football…

“How is your obsession with UGA manifesting itself this week?”

Repeat for 51 more weeks.

Yeah, cakewalk doesn’t even begin to describe it.
