UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Felton’s Dogs successful in classroom
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This is kind of old news but I thought it should be pointed out that ousted Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton, who was charged with cleaning up the academic mess left behind by Jim Harrick, was successful on that front.
In the latest APR (academic progress rate) rankings, Georgia’s score of 958 was second only to Vanderbilt in the SEC. The NCAA’s acceptable threshold is 925. Seven SEC teams fell below that: Florida (919), Ole Miss (917), Tennessee (911), LSU (910) Auburn (905), Mississippi State (901) and South Carolina (899).
New ratings are due out late this spring, but I thought I should give Felton his due. So if they weren’t winning on the court, at least the Bulldogs were winning in the classroom. Not sure how much weight that carries with the average fan.
A lot of links leftover from the last couple of days, so … .
Columnists from around the SEC rarely agree on anything but they are lining up in solidarity to light up Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin. Our Mark Bradley talked to legendary coach Vince Dooley about Kiffin on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Memphis Commercial Appeal’s Ron Higgins has nicknamed Kiffin “Boy Blunder” and Mobile Press-Register columnist Paul Finebaum calls for Kiffin’s dismissal right now. And Finebaum’s a Tennessee grad! …
By the way, former Georgia defensive end Michael Lemon is NOT headed to South Carolina as was reported on some of the fan sites earlier this week… .
Speaking of South Carolina, No. 1 was No. 2 choice for the latest hotshot Gamecock in something they’re calling “Jersey Gate” over in Columbia… .
In case you missed it, the Willie Martinez-to-Miami saga is officially over. The Hurricanes hired North Carolina’s John Lovett as defensive coordinator… .
Looks like Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks has kept his Lexington-La Grange recruiting pipeline intact for another year… .
I’m just going to link to Jeff Owens’ blog every day. He always seems to have something interesting to say… .
For what it’s worth, Tennessee’s basketball team is taking tonight’s basketball game against Georgia very seriously.

Good job team. Maybe the AJC will actually print this story like they do with all the negative stories.

Well, well, well!!! UGAY finally got a coach to require actual class attendance and they fired him. Isn’t that funny. You reds may be getting smarter but you still don’t have the excellent Tickle Piles that we do at Tech!

With comments like yellowbloods, you wonder why the AJC even tries to provide a service like these blogs.
I really don’t care which side you are on, the childish comments (at best) just get OLD.

Who cares…. Felton was awful, there was nothing positive about him

Hmmm, Felton is second only to Vanderbilt in academics and the president of the university, who personally gave us Tony Cole, fires him. It is clear where Adams’ priorities lie, and that is not in the classroom—at least for ascholarship athletes.

That’s great, I’m sure felton is a great guy personally. He’s probably a very good basketball coach. His ultimate job though is winning basketball games, excelling in the classroom is the job of the student. UGA made the right move and I hope felton finds gainful employment elsewhere.

Well I’ll congradulate Felton on having a high academic score. Job well done. So let me get this straight….Fans were all pumped up and filling the Coliseum when Harrick and Co were beating Top 10 teams and making strides like never before and then a jealous brat ran his mouth and then UGA dismisses the best coach they ever had on the hardwood for more than 2 seasons. Then they bring in Felton and the Coliseum had like 80 people in the stands and are true losers on the court but knocking out the bookwork and finishing behind VANDERBILT yet fire him (for the record I would have never hired him). And people wonder why UGA WILL NEVER be a school people take seriously when it comes to basketball, it’s the best Top Conference stepping stone job in the world and that is what it will always be I don’t care how Adams, Evans and Johnson spin it!!!
Thank god for the NBA!

Why the tiny headline about UGA academic success? If it were the other way around it would be blasted out in bold print on AJC.com.

Nice to hear about the academics, especially considering all of the transfers and dismissals of the past few years. I would have figured those would have counted against UGA and lowered the APR.
Also, Chip from clicking on the link about John Lovett it states he’s currently employed by UNC and not Clemson.

Hopefully the new coach can continue that trend in the APR and start a new trend on the court.

Glad to hear that about the APR, BUT, I wonder what happens when the NCAA figures in Younes Idrissi, Reshad Singleton, Billy Humphrey, Mike Mercer, Channing Toney and anyone else I may be forgetting who left the program.

I agree with Joe. Exactly TWO of Felton’s scholarship players graduated- newman and bliss. Also, AJ isn’t going to graduate this year. Give it a couple of years and you’ll see how bad off this program was.

Yellowblood — I would be interested in GT’s grad rate for basketballers. Last time I saw that stat they were LAST in the ACC, and their percentage was about half of Georgia’s. Their APR also lagged far behind Georgia. Instead of worrying about our basketball program, you may want to concern yourself with the lousy one you guys have. We may not be winning but our players are graduating and on schedule to graduate at a far greater rate than GT’s. GT is also a LOSING program. You’ve beaten us and one ACC opponent. The conclusion is GT values winning over academics and will trade academics for beating Georgia on the court. Sad, very sad. But you’ve got Lewis Clinch, a man who has been ineligible 2 times during his 4 yrs, but recently made the Dean’s List. Tell me again how difficult academics are at GT.
If the guys who left the program graduate elsewhere within 6 yrs of entering school that counts on the graduation rates.
However, the APR is a different stat.

Joe: As long as those players you mentioned were in good academic standing it will not reflect negatively on Georgia’s APR.

Chip, why don’t you put up what the avg GPA was on the UGA basketball team this past year??? 2.2 GPA. Yeah, that’s stellar. And most are in basket weaving majors.

As for the Willie Martinez story. Surely everyone knew that was just one college (Miami) trying to do a favor for an alumnus. Why would any D1 school hire a defensive coordinator whose defense gave up over 40 points a game in 4 of their last 5 games? They wouldn’t of course. I sure hope Mark Richt is right in thinking that Martinez and the defense just had an off year. Because since he chose to do nothing about it, Richt will burn up all the good will he has with the fan base and alumni if the defense is not much improved next year.

I’m glad that UGA basketball academics are improving, but of course all fans want both academics and wins. I’m sorry Felton got fired but he was paid a lot of money and he has the potential to get up to $1.5 MM as severance. Just hire a hot young coach who can recruit one really good player and one solid player a year and everything should be fine.

I really think Felton isn’t fully appreciated for all he did for the program. He took a stand that many coaches in his position would not have taken by dismissing the three most talented players from the team in one season. He refused to accommodate Billy Humphrey, Mike Mercer and Takais Brown when they thought they were bigger than the program. He would not accept less than maximum effort from his players in the classroom and on the court.
As a result he guided the program out of the darkness of the Harrick era and built a team based on character and accountability. He is leaving the program with 15 quality student-athletes and no NCAA violations during his tenure. This cannot be undervalued. I think we’ll look back one day at Felton’s time at Georgia and realize the he was the perfect man to bridge the gap from disgrace to success.

Chip: let me echo the comment above from ‘PTC DAWG’ … this character named ‘Yellowblood’ clearly needs to be blocked from posting on these blogs. We’ve all been reading his same drivel far too long now, on both the UGA and Tech blogs (and he/she is just one of several that come to mind).
Doesn’t the AJC have the ability to record his email address and computer ID and put him on a black-list??
Seriously, a little banter between foes and light-hearted humor is one thing, but this guy ‘Yellowblood’ is a nuisance and needs to be put out to pasture.
Congrats to UGA on the academic success of its Basketball players.

AJC bias: Grade-point average isn’t pertinent to the APR but, since you asked, men’s basketball’s was 2.49. Now that was lowest among men’s sports to be sure but not what you claimed. Not sure where you’re getting your data but mine’s coming from UGA.
FWIW, football was 2.80, baseball 2.81. Swimming had the highest for men at 3.08 followed closely by golf at 3.06. All men averaged 2.84… .
Seven women’s sports had 3.0 or better led by cross country at 3.36. Women overall were 3.12.
Combined, all sports were 2.97, which Georgia was very, very proud of… .
Seriously: Yes, we could blacklist Yellowblood or anybody else that gets out of line. But we don’t do that for being childish and immature or lacking class. Only for racial slurs or foul language. But he’s an individual we keep a very, very close eye on.

Chip- when you say you keep a close eye on him, you mean you love him/her writing on your blog. You also love realityyech b/c so many people respond to her drivel, and thus you get more traffic. Bravesfan79 has been spewing racial slurs on the gt blogs about the need for white basketball players. ggodsey wrote about Tony Shumpert molesting boys. Im pretty sure i’ve seen some jerk writing about CMR doing the same thing around here. You clowns at the AJC don’t blacklist ANYONE, and I think that you enjoy reading the idiotic banter on here b/c it just means that you get more traffic on your blogs. Hey, at least you respond to the bloggers though. That idiot Ken Seguira seldom responds, and when he does, he can’t even highlight his name in BLUE. Will someone go teach that idiot? Response?
PTCDawg, and Seriously- I agree 100% with yall. Im so flippin sick of seeing the garbage that is written on these blogs….but yet I always check them. DAMN you AJC!!!!

Good to see a positive story about the basketball players under Felton. Wish the results on the floor could have been better but this is a sign that Felton was doing things the right way.
