UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Will Hoop Dogs win an SEC game?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
How many of you guys caught Georgia’s basketball game at South Carolina? Don’t let the final margin (79-68) fool you. It wasn’t that close. The loss was the Dogs’ 10th in a row and dropped them to 0-8 in conference play.
I’m beginning to wonder if they’ll win an SEC game this season. By the way, a Georgia team hasn’t gone winless in the league in the modern era. The Dogs went 0-2 in a punctuated season in 1944. Otherwise, they went 1-13 in 1956, 2-12 in 1952, 2-9 in 1945 and won just three SEC games in ‘53, ‘58, ‘62, ‘75, ‘77 and 2000.
It’s going to be tough to get a win this week. They’re at Tennessee Wednesday then play hosts to Florida on Saturday. It looks like Georgia’s next best chance will be Feb. 18 against Auburn in Athens. Don’t you know the pressure to win will be mounting by then?
A link …
You’ll recall that last week I pointed out that Georgia senior defensive tackle Jeff Owens had started his own blog. Well, I have to admit I’ve been very impressed with young Mr. Owens’ writing ability. His latest entry is entitled, “What It Means to Wear the G,”, and it’s guaranteed to fire up you Bulldogs fans. Very eloquent and passionate. And it’s particularly poignant coming from a kid that grew up in Sunrise, Fla.

This year’s b-ball team is unbelievable - not even the 04 - 05 team (Felton’s second team), with only 6 scholarship players, was this bad. That team only won 8 games overall, though 4 were in the conference, so this year’s team cannot beat that record since it has already won 9 games. Wow, who woulda’ thunkit?

Chip Towers——At the risk of being severely off-topic today, here’s a follow-up to your last blog topic: over-signing football commitments.
I had a little time over the weekend to explore the NCAA website. The rules on football commitment limits, scholarship withdrawal, mid-year replacements and a variety of related subjects are codified at Rule 15.5.6 of the NCAA Division I Manual. For your convenience, I provide the following link:
NCAA Division I Manual
For anyone who wants to talk knowledgeably about these subjects, I recommend the Division I Manual to you. There were a lot of opinions expressed in Friday’s blog, accusations of cheating at other programs, and many other good questions raised. The answers to the vast majority of those questions are in the Division I Manual for anyone to read.

I watched the entire game and I thought I finally saw a little life in this team. The first 5 minutes was absolutely dreadful to watch but after that I thought they looked okay. I did appreciate the aggressive play of Thompkins early even though he couldn’t get his shots to fall. He was all over the boards. South Carolina could not miss a three point shot. Georgia folded the tent in the last few games but I didn’t see that in Saturdays game. If they can keep their heads up and stop turning the ball over they will win a couple of games. Except for Woodberry this is a very young team. Herrmann benched Price and Leslie for the entire game for screwing off in practice earlier in the week. I liked that move. Get your serious players on the court.

Chip, thanks, this is great info, saved for reference. One note of interest 15.5.6.3.6 states that walk on’s after two years can be given scholarship and are not considered as initial counters ie 25 year limit. Not sure many of top programs have any atheletes in this group anymore, maybe kickers.

Let’s face it. We all know how bad things are but I still think they pull out a win at some point simply due to another team simply mailing it in one night due to overconfidence.
I just want the season to come to a merciful end so we can get on with the business of rebuilding. This season is over but I’ll still tune in to see if we can pull one out. 1-15 is better than 0-16.

My fear is by the end of this season no good coach will want the Georgia job for any amount of money. It will have to be a shot-in-the-dark with a young up-and-comer from a midmajor. A very young up-and-comer. It would seem that the 2 point guards would have learned on their own by now not to dribble to the baseline, under the basket into no man’s land. The new coach will have to recruit a point guard quick.

Chip, I cannot see how this team will win an SEC game. The only hope is a perfect storm scanario where Georgia plays far beyond its coaching, ability and talent coupled with an opponent playing its absolute worst game possible. Even then it may take an opponent riddled with the flu for this Georgia squad to have a remote chance at winning.
This is the worst Georgia basketball team I can recall in the last 40 yrs. I challenge anyone out there to identify a worse team and God knows we’ve had some stinkers at Georgia. Given that Felton proclaimed this the most talented roster he’d ever coached (sounds a lot like Jim Donnan) what went wrong? It appears to me that there is a virtual void of talent, the exception being Thompkins. Whose job was it to evaluate talent on Felton’s staff? How in the world do they go so wrong? Are these players as bad as it appears or is the Felton coaching style such that it has drug them to these depths?
We can only hope Damon makes the hire of a lifetime as it will take at least 3 years for the Georgia program to climb out of the SEC cellar, and this team is so far below the next team above it we will need a true miracle worker. It’s bad.

I’ve learned to be careful what I say, ‘course I have 22 years on CLK and have let my lips sink me once or twice too. Ask my ex-wife… Have to wonder if this was an attempt to simply mark a spot in the yard of the SEC. I think we pull a win out at some point, though none would not surprise me. Coach Hermann continues to run the same horrific half court offense that Felton ran, and the use (or lack thereof) of the bench still has no rhyme or reason. We actually do have some talent on this team. Dustin Ware makes some freshman mistakes, but shows some real talent as a passer and gets on some real hot streaks shooting. Travis Leslie is a Mike Mercer type athlete; he just needs to work hard at the mental part of the game, because it doesn’t seem to come easily to him. We have two good shooting bigs, Thompkins and Price, and 2 very physical bigs, Barnes and Jackson. I still have a very hard time understanding why McPhee is not in the game more. His defense is very suspect, but our shooting, especially from 3 point range has been aweful, and the only times he has seen significant minutes, he shoots lights out and gets us back in the game offensively.
Anyway, I believe the right coach could take this group and make it a .500 team in the SEC, not a great team, but a respectable one. It just has to be a coach that they respond to and makes the most of these players. Felton/Hermann have never adjusted their coaching and plays when they get different types of talent. I just hope we find that coach before soon enough to keep the players from quitting.
Go Dawgs!

Who cares, aren’t you use to it, It’s UGA basketball and that’s how they like it over there. The team had no life on SAturday and it was just an unorganiized pick up game with sub par players. I’m sure Thompkins will transfer and what happen to Lesile even thouh I think he should dip also. AJax is the best big man they have and he couldn’t get off the bench at Tech so that’s saying something. Zac Swansy, gosh can we find him a D3 school to play. Price is soft and Ware is a wannabe PT Player. Heck McPhee looks to be the most confident player and he can’t get of the bench, at least let him shoot that rock at will. Woodbury is decent but that;s it and I don’t want to here about the ankle issues he has had. Gosh just scrap the season. I said a few weeks ago tha UGA would finish 12-20. I must have been dreaming that. Make that 10-22 and that’s even a stretch! Funny thing is this team would be in First place in some mid-major conference…a reflection of the coach….a midmajor guy!

How about an AJC story showing how we got here? I read somewhere that 11 out of 31 recruits transferred out. Did anyone make it somewhere else? Were the present recruits highly regarded? Whey can’t we run a half court offense? Even Gaines did not do it. It seems that there is a missing story here.

Out of Felton’s recruits and of the 24 scholarships given, 4 used up all of their eligibility at UGA, one died, one was injured and quit, and 8 more either transferred outright or were asked to transfer. Out of those 8 only Channing Toney (5th year SR. now at UAB has seemingly done anything. He has started all 24 games so far for them this year, averaging 8 pts per game, 4th best on the team. Also,.Mercer got kicked off another team.

We have a walk on starting at one guard and a one time starter at the other guard spot(that should be a divison 2 player) plus a starting center, who seems lost most nights. This should tell you what kind of a recruiter coach Felton was and I use the word coach loosely.

Judge Dawg,
I don’t know the exact numbers, but yes, the attrition has been way above what could be considered just “bad luck.” The ones I can think of in Felton’s tenure are Idrissi (quit), Singleton (quit), Toney (quit), T. Brown (dismissed), Mercer (dismissed), Humphrey (dismissed), J. Jacobs (quit). L. Williams went straight to the NBA, and of course, there was the tragic death of Kevin Brophy. I know I’m probably missing a couple, so your numbers sound right. I went to the awards dinner following the 2006-2007 season and a large number of the players just rolled their eyes and cracked jokes to each other while Felton spoke. Their dinners are not huge like football; you can see clearly all of the player’s reactions. I knew then that Felton was not relating to most of his players and all of the attrition just proves that point. Great coaches are like great managers; they know how to relate differently to each personality to get the most from each individual on the team. Felton never seemed to be able to do that. He had plan A and nothing else. He did some good things, but the program would never have moved forward with him.
Checked out Jeff Owens’ blog - good stuff. I hope it is reflective of the team attitude in general.

Georgia will not win again this season. When does tennis and baseball start.
By LADG
February 9, 2009 5:01 PM | Link to this
Tennis has started, UGA (ranked 3rd) still undefeated.
Gymnastics team still kicking a* and looking for another consecutive national championship.
Baseball’s ranked but you gotta play the games, but certainly a top-tier program.
Check out the coaches. See anything familiar? Think any of them would (a) recruit these (UGA basketball) players, or (b) put up with them?
How bad is it?
I was seriously wondering if Pat Summit would consider coaching a men’s team in the SEC.
And, it’s not about UGA. It’s basketball history or its campus.
It’s one of the greatest towns and university experiences a kid can have. Those gymnastics super-phenoms and tennis uber-kids have no problem coming here. (Debate it but, this is also true) Football players love the place — UGA has the longest current streak of top-10 recruiting classes in the nation — no matter how much flak there is thrown around every year after signing day).
And, out in the world, UGA has a significant, well-earned reputation of excellence in athletics (and academics, believe it or not).
There is NO reason basketball players cannot be recruited to that school.
To replace a football coach, what did we do? Hired the offensive coordinator of a perennial top-5 football team (at the time, FSU).
Bold action is needed. Hiring the “up and coming” young coach from State Community College and Auto-Transmission Technical School and hoping they’re an undiscovered miracle is wishful thinking and would totally fail to leverage the profile and stature of UGA in the college athletics universe.
We can do better.

SO, in the last half century, no one has “whiffed” in the SEC! What a great legacy Felton left us, that is if we do not somehow pull one out of where? The answer is AJ Green. Don’t laugh. I’m from Summerville, SC where AJ played some great football and great basketball. He led his football team to the state championship game where they lost. He carried his high school basketball team to the state championship game that they won. He is the real deal on the basketball court as much as he is the real deal on the football field. It really would not be in his best interest but the Basketball Dawgs would benefit if he was on the court. Actually, I’m willing to be there are 10 football players at Georgia that would make a better team than the current basketball team.

Anyway, towards a new coach, the perfect situation would be hire Knight and hire Wilkins as an assistant set to take over when Knight goes. I realize without a good assitant, Knight really only brings 5-7 years, but then again if Usc can win with Horn in one year, imagine what we could do with Knight. Look closely toward Wilkins to, he wanted the job when Felton got it. With the cash flow UGA gets from sports with the greedy twins (Evans and pressident adams-total jack@$$) we can afford Knight with a good assitant. Knight brings media exposure, a solid team, and no investigations, add that with a good assistant learning the tricks of the trade from Knight and we got ourselves a team for years to come.

Sorry I didn’t initiate a new blog.
We suffered a loss in our family today. Lucy, one of our two little Jack Russells, died today. I will resume with a new blog tomorrow while checking in here occasionally today.
Thanks.

Chip- really sorry for your loss. Losing one of your pets is really hard. They are family. You’re in my prayers.

Sorry for your loss Chip, pets become family members. It is a pity God did not give dogs the same life span as humans.
